An Essential Guide to Philadelphia Diners | Eater Philly

"Though everybody in the Northeast has their diner loyalties, the daytime only Mayfair is arguably the best known. Big and efficient, this is the place to go on Frankford Avenue when you have a crowd to feed. Red leather booths and an abundance of chrome set an old-timey scene for tackling a specialty sundae or one of Mayfair’s famous milkshakes." - Olivia DiPasquale

Best Classic Restaurants in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"This classic diner opened in Northeast Philly back in 1932. It has undergone a few changes since then — most recently ending its 24/7 status — but today the Mayfair Diner remains a pure 1950s-era throwback for chicken croquettes, creamed chipped beef, and thick slices of pie." - Eater Staff

The Best Restaurants in Northeast Philly | Eater Philly

"The heydey of great diners in the Northeast has ended, but the Mayfair Diner is still kicking. This 24-hour eatery is the place to go for breakfast all day, matzo ball soup, and old school classics like french dip sandwiches. Founded in 1932, Mayfair Diner is celebrating 90 years in business. Rubbing elbows with a national politician is a possibility here — ever since President Kennedy dropped in during his 1960 campaign.Other public figures have been known to visit, including President Obama in 2008 while campaigning in Philly." - Sarah Maiellano

Mayfair Diner - Review - Northeast Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Diners usually have super large menus full of breakfast crowd-pleasers like thick and sugary french toast, omelets, and waffles. And the Northeast’s Mayfair Diner is no different. Along with the menu, it’s also full of long booths and large tables that can fit large groups. Open 24 hours daily, this is a reliable spot where you can come hungry, have some coffee and tea, and leave happy and probably in need of a nap." - Candis R. McLean

First time here. My breakfast was amazing. Everything cooked just right. My waitress was very friendly and she put utensils, salt, pepper, and greap jelly in the bag for the to go order for my love. I didn't even have to ask. It was my first time here, and I was not sure if the waitress collected the payment at the table or if I paid at the counter. So I decided to ask the man behind me who I knew was a regular due to overhearing the waitress talking to him. I decided to let him know it was my first time there and ask if I wait at the table or pay at the counter. The man was very friendly he let me know I pay at the counter and he wished me a good week and said hopefully you come back. I definitely will be back it was a very nice experience.

Google
For us, this is the “Year of the Diner” and the Mayfair did not disappoint. It is a large diner with the usual diner fare. Our waitress was great! Friendly and accommodating to our requests. The food was good, served quickly. The shredded potatoes with crunchy edges were a surprise. The diner is accessible, with wide isles, plenty of open tables and roomy booths. The staff sang happy birthday to a 5 year old behind us. Very sweet. Lots of families. The spaces in the parking lot are on the small side, so cars are very close to each other, making it difficult to get in/out of the car doors. There is also street parking right in front of the diner.

Google
The hostess was really sweet, our waitress was ok but felt like she was rushing us. The biggest issue was my mom (has a reaction to vinegar) ordered “eggs poached in plain water, no vinegar please” she was served fried eggs (she can not eat that) very nicely told the waitress she had wanted poached eggs. The waitress comes back with a cup of water with two eggs cut up inside, watery yolk and just grossness! We will definitely not be returning!!

The Cobb Salad was excellent. I wish they would have had some balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing. The Service was excellent! We will be coming back!

Tasty classic burger. Fries were perfectly crunchy. Great portion. Not overwhelming. Really enjoyed the atmosphere. Waitress was polite and attentive. Husband says the Reuben was really good

Google
Stopped in today and the chipped beef was outstanding. Love the home fries with onions. The best coffee around !!! Great breakfast here love it. Excellent service ...hot and fresh. One of my favorite places. Never disappoints thanks for serving great breakfast!! I'm a repeat customer since childhood. Just adding a note. I almost always go to mayfair and order the same thing chipped beef. Well I had a taste for something different so I ordered 2 eggs over easy with scrapple. It comes with hashbrowns and buttered toast. The eggs were made to perfection... buttery and not overcooked nor undercooked. The scrapple was wonderful the outside with a nice crunch and the inside soft and blazing hot...well seasoned with a distinct peppered flavor. The potatoes were nicely seasoned and the buttered toast was a nice addition. I always tell the waitress I come for the coffee and believe me I do. But the food is perfection and worth the trip. I love this diner and I have loved it since childhood. Over 40 yrs. Go get some breakfast I promise it's worth it. Oh and the price was great too. <3

Mayfair diner has the best breakfast. The omelets, pancakes and eggs are all delicious. The staff is efficient and will go thr extra mile for you.

Google
Food was good, fast service, waitress was really nice. Lady at front counter a little intense regarding masks. You wear it for two seconds and then take it off at the table and they don't do social distancing regarding the tables so it made no sense. But over all good diner.

Yelp
We haven't been here in years... so when we entered the Mayfair Diner, it was like stepping back in time.  The interior decor has not changed.  Very red and shiny silver.  The counter still has room for plenty of patrons and the booths were comfortable.  Parking is available right in front of the diner.  Our visit was midweek, and aside from a couple of singles eating at the counter, and one table of two, it was completely empty.   The menu offered breakfast all day and we opted for this.   Disappointingly, all of the food was room temperature at best.  The hash brown potatoes were bland and undercooked.    The eggs also needed a little more grill time but the coffee was wonderful!  Our waitress was so very sweet and extremely attentive making sure we were taken good care of  ~ and the gentleman manning the cash register was exceptionally courteous.  No matter what, it is forever comforting to see Mayfair Diner still standing as we drive up Frankford Avenue.

Yelp
Small-town (in relation to the rest of philly) no-frills service with a smile. Quality diner food- I've been coming here sporadically for years, as most in NE philly do, and I'm never disappointed. I went here for breakfast today with my parents and got the sirloin steak and eggs, cooked to a PERFECT medium rare, literally so tender and beautiful. Additionally, the eggs were scrambled and not overcooked, and I confirmed everything was cooked in butter on the griddle and not cheap seed oils from the waitress. I also appreciated they didn't have music playing and it was a relaxing setting for socialization. Will always return when I'm in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Food was freshly made. Very good! I had a great time. I am giving it 3 because the place looks a little dirty but other than that, it wasn't bad.

Yelp
I always enjoy my time here. I usually meet friends and we get to catch up over brunch. True diner atmosphere which I love. I typically get their omelettes and this time the veggie one was delicious, as always. The waitresses are friendly and always make us feel welcome and never rushed. I love the decor - very Philly - I know I'm home when I'm at a diner like this. Check them out!

Yelp
It's one the best diners in the immediate area. The wait-staff are wonderful and attentive and the lot and restaurant are kept clean and tidy. They have only day hours, so not the place to head for dinner. Personally, I feel $13 is a bit much to pay for just a breakfast, but it's a nice treat now and then. Do it, because the food is always excellent.

Yelp
The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because of the Lack of communication at the front counter. We walked in to meet a friend and was told to wait 5-10 minutes, yet.... Our favorite server had tons of open booths and seats. She called us over, but then the manager kept telling us to wait. However, we didn't wanna sit in the crowded section which was towards the left it just didn't make any sense. However, the food is consistent at the Mayfair diner, and the one waitress is super awesome. I think her name is Lisa she is really fantastic. She gives you her honest opinion about the food she's been there a really long time and I'd rather someone tell me, what to expect from the soup of the day or from a certain dish that way in my opinion, I can make the better decision where to spend my money if I'm in the mood for a turkey club or a bowl of soup at least I know that I can appreciate when someone says it might be salty or bland, but this is not the case at the Mayfair Diner, their food is consistent I'd prefer breakfast. I am a breakfast kind of gal and I enjoy breakfast any time of day, but this diner is also close by a lot of our friends and a few of our family members so it's easy on everyone to meet at the Mayfair Diner plus this place has been here forever that says some thing as well. I know the chicken Parm is delicious and a few friends have gotten the dinner size to take half home and they still were full. I like the turkey, rice, soup and I am a big fan of their omelettes and their pancakes. My mom usually gets the chicken fingers or the quesadillas and they're very consistent and delicious is definitely worth the money. I know their hours are not open as long these days but, it's a pretty decent place to go. I feel like the service at many other places has gone downhill and this place at least I can speak for the server name. Lisa is pretty wonderful from my house to the front door. It's about 40 minutes so if I'm wasting gas to drive that long to get something to eat, you know it's gonna be pretty good.

Yelp
For the past month I have been enjoying breakfast here at least once a week. My usual is a bacon and Swiss cheese omelette with wheat toast with lots of butter and a side of sausage and a nice cup of coffee. The staff is always friendly and provide excellent service. The food is always good. Ambiance is pure retro Philadelphia Diner style and I really like it. Prices are good and very reasonable and the serving sizes are large. I've also had lunch here a few times and I was very satisfied with their cheese steak and side of french fries.

Yelp
Nice dinner conveniently located on a main ave in Philadelphia, Easy parking, good breakfast reasonably priced and friendly staff.

Yelp
Came here for a late lunch/brunch on a Sunday. Seemed like your average diner - food was good, it seemed pretty clean & our server was great. Although I didn't get any coffee I was pleased to overhear our server telling another customer that they'd have to check for a fresh pot or brew one - not just serving whatever she found.

Maryann H.

Yelp
I went today and got a cheesesteak with cheese wiz and bacon. The best I've ever had. The French fries were awesome, just the way I like them. The service was great and fast. The ambiance in the room was very friendly and I will be going back again.
google avatar

Petros K.

Yelp
Disappointed to say the least. Came here early in the morning and was the only customer. I ordered eggs, scrapple, home fries and toast but had to repeat myself 3-4 time because the lady taking my order couldn't understand what I was saying. Eggs were ok but the potatoes tasted like they were left over from the day before. $14 with just water as my beverage is the reason why it's empty. That's highway robbery!

Yelp
Such a cute "down home" diner in Philadelphia. Fast service and very friendly staff. My breakfast food was good and the portions were decent. My friend and I had a lovely time just catching up and enjoying each others company. There was no rush on the late Sunday morning. I will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Through the years this is my neighborhood diner that I walk to. It kept its legacy with great food and service. Even through the COVID-19 pandemic, it remained open and served the neighborhood with all the love it always had. The food is awesome and the waitresses are so patient and attentive and lovely. Kathy is my favorite!

Yelp
Used to come here for decades, but haven't been here in a few years. My, how it has declined! Came in for late dinner (10pm) and half the lights were out giving it an unwelcome feeling. There's a dank odor lingering in the air. The upholstery is filthy. The previously sparkling decor and trim is broken and covered in God knows what. The table feels like it's about ready to fall down and is listing away from the wall. Bathroom had graffiti all over fixtures and needs a thorough scrubbing not to mention several things fixed. Even the sign out front needs a good cleaning. Outside the parking area needs line painting and they have replaced some of the lights on the trademark exterior with those obnoxious LED lights that are way too bright. The service was just ok and the food was mediocre. Prices were about what you would expect. If you haven't been here in a while, you are in for a very disappointing surprise. It's not the Mayfair of old. It really feels like they are trying to compensate for lost sales by skimping on much-needed things. They don't realize that they are competing with the likes of GrubHub etc., and need to step up their service and facility game in order to offer something that is worth leaving the house for.
google avatar

Whitney L.

Yelp
My absolute favorite breakfast spot in Philly. It's small and quant so on weekends there's usually a wait but it's definitely worth it. Their breakfast sandwich and chicken and waffles are both amazing. They also have a great bloody marry!

Janny M.

Yelp
I love the chicken wings and fries, omelets and pancakes, we always order take out on weekends

Yelp
Mayfair Diner on Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philly, is a classic stainless steel railroad car diner. The front dining area has been well preserved, so if you are into these iconic food circuses, Mayfair is one you should consider for your collection. We stopped in after a concert Saturday night. The lights were on, and a few tables were occupied. Our server was efficient and gave us time to decide what we wanted as first timers. We ultimately ordered a patty melt, Buffalo chicken cheesesteak and hot Buffalo wings. Everything came with a boatload of fries. My rye burger was pretty good, with lots of sautéed onions on top of a half pounder encased in good rye bread. The fries were okay, but not as crisp as I like. The cheesesteak was abundant with chopped chicken, onions, peppers and gravy boat of melted cheese. The roll was decent, too. I didn't try the wings, but my son scored them as average. Eating in the dining car was a trip. Although renovated, it still had the legit ambiance of a last century lunch wagon, with long counter and semi-swinging stools. It may date me, but I enjoyed this atmosphere even more than our meal. There are several diners along Frankford Avenue, some bigger, others smaller. Some may have better food, but none do the "Diner Experience" better than Mayfair.

Yelp
good food.rough area, nice waitstaff. would definitely go back! The customer service is outstanding.

Yelp
I want to give a SHOUT OUT TO THE MAYFAIR DINER!!! Today was the very first day I went to the diner (My neighborhood is in West Phila.). What a friendly staff, excellent service and delicious breakfast. I certainly will return and enjoy this fine facility. CC Crumpton

Yelp
This is by far my favorite diner any where in NE Philadelphia. In all honesty, I can't even think of one in Philly that I'd rather go to. It's a diner, it's up to date now, and it has nice clean, simple menus. My usual M.O. at diner places is breakfast, regardless of the time of day. My favorite dish here is the creamed chipped beef on toast. It's the best of its kind that I've ever tried. Served with a massive helping of home fries (hash browns) that are savory and delicious. You can taste and see the carmelized onions mixed in there, this is not cardboard diner food! The Balgian Waffle gets an A+ from the 12 year old and the pancakes are tasty and satisfying; fluffy and malty, just how you'd expect pancakes to be. Anyway, as many times as I've been to this place, I've never been disappointed with the breakfast food. Now service....lol....service is kind of entertaining here. Usually they kitchen flies the food out, and it's good. The last time my family went, it didn't come out for a while...not sure if it was the server or the kitchen, but regardless, it was worth the wait because the food was better than usual. The server this time was a young guy, obviously new to waiting tables as he made the usual n00b mistakes like getting silverware, blaming other servers for not getting us things that he sent them to do even though it is actually HIS job, etc etc. But he made one unforgivable mistake....and this is something that even a person who never waited tables in their life shouldn't make.....he touched the lips of our coffee mugs with his nasty waiter fingers. I have waited tables before...I know what things you touch when you are busy waiting tables.....and you dont' have time to wash your hands after every action you perform. Please for the love of all that is sacred, don't ever touch my cups where I put my mouth!!!!!! I didn't have the heart to correct him. This time. I did some wiping after he left the table though. But hey....the coffee is good. The visit to the Mayfair I had before that, there was a wonderful young lady waiting on us but then we got to listen to a server argument about the sanity of one of the elder waitresses. LOL I mean this one older woman just went on and on about how she was treated/perceived/etc and the other girls were trying to calm her down and critique her performance in a different way so that she wasn't flipping the eff out....hahhaa the whole place was kind of looking around at each other but in the end the waitstaff rolled their eyes and laughed it off with apologies to the diners for the outburst and I laughed and chakled it up to the character of the Mayfair. Gotta love it. P.S. I'm taking my mom here for mother's day, so if you're gonna try this place out....do it any other day but mother's day...I will be hungry and I don't want to wait in a line. :D Also, this is a great spot to gorge on not as greasy as you'd think comfort food after a night of drinking.

Yelp
I had a great Reuben and fries and my coworker had the broiled crab cake meal and she enjoyed it as well. Can't wait to get back to try other things.

Yelp
Came here on a weekday morning. The restaurant is not busy, we were greeted by friendly servers. Our server was very nice, she kept coming back to make sure our coffee cup is full. The food was actually better than what I expected from a diner - at least for the omelette I ordered, I really liked it. When it comes to eating at a diner, people should set the expedition to a reasonable level. Will definitely go back!

Yelp
This was horrible they rushed it the food is disgusting cold !! Unbeatable !! Smh a waste of time and money they don't follow instructions and I'm highly pushed i wasted my money on this. Crap

Yelp
If you've never ended up here at 3 am, drunk off your ass, eating mozzarella sticks (which, by the way, are legitimately the best I've ever had. No bullshit) and being extra kind and respectful to the overnight staff, did you even really have a good time? The answer is no. No night is complete without a stop at the Mayfair Diner before you Uber home. My signature move is to spend all night at McKenna's, across the street, and mosey on over to grab some late night bad-for-you food. And a hot chocolate, cause that's my thing. Go here, enjoy their stuff, tip your waitresses.
google avatar

Yelp
Reservations: not needed Location: local Philly neighborhood Parking: parking lot accessible Environment: typical diner and I love it! Service: quick and accommodating Menu selection: very well versed as most diners. Prices: very reasonable Food: everything ordered was great! Fast, hot and fresh!!! Drinks: great tea! Variety as usual Desert: declined dessert but the selections seemed good. Tab/Bill: only $23 for 2 people! Will I return? Absolutely!!!!
google avatar

Tara G.

Yelp
Look, not everything here is going to be perfect. And it's a pain in the ass that it's still cash only in 2018, but it is what it is. This place still bangs out a more than acceptable breakfast that isn't going to break the bank. It's also the first place I think of when I'm really craving a banana split. The sundaes here are just as you remember when you were a kid. The Dining Car has gone downhill, Liberty Bell is more expensive, and Tiffany's is just too far away. The Mayfair Diner has always stayed the same as I remember it- no better, no worse. The service is good, the coffee is hot, and I never have to wait for a table.
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
Mayfair Diner has really gone downhill over the last couple years. I usually stop in for breakfast or late at night, but now I'd rather go to one of the other 6 diners in the area. Stopped in a couple nights ago, and there was maybe 7 people eating. Our service was terrible, just an older crabby lady bossing around a younger waitress and my food took about 20 mins to come out. I should've left and went to 4 Seasons.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
a lot better than I remember it being. Got seated quickly. coffee brought and refilled multiple times. the waitress didn't disappear or wander off. - Really good homefries, coffee, etc. - Price reasonable and a bit less than other local diners. Overall a really good dining experience.
google avatar

Crystal M.

Yelp
I came here because it was listed at one of the best 24 Hr. Diners. My experience was less than good unfortunately. I ordered a dinner special chicken parm with French Onion soup. The soup was very salty and the bread bits were a soggy mess. They should have the bread on the side or get it to the customer before it falls apart. The chicken parm was okay but the pasta was overcooked and inedible. My friend felt the same who ordered the same meal. I then ended with dessert hoping it would be good. What was ordered was carrot Cake and Boston Creme pie. The cake was okay but the Boston Creme pie was below average. The server was very kind although and got my friend a different pie (Chocolate mousse) which was better. Upon getting my check I was charged extra for the soup and was not told that although soup is included with your dinner....French onion was extra, nor was it mentioned in the menu. This is my first poor review and it's rather disappointing. Not coming back.

Yelp
I really love this place. Its my favorite diner thats in walking distance of my house. I love it more for the feel it gives off and people that work at this place. The food is of your standard diner quality and thats perfectly fine. You get what you pay for here. I will say though that their chocolate milkshakes are scrumptious, I get one every time I go! Its clean, fun and a great place you can go to at any time you want.

Yelp
I came here with my dad and got a turkey club. It was really good. After a long morning, its a nice lunch spot. I would eat here again.

Yelp
Went there for the early bird special (whoa, I'm getting old) while I waited for my car to get fixed at my favorite mechanic across the street. I got the chicken croquettes (two large cones of crispy chicken load over mashed potatoes and topped with gravy). It was the special, so French soup, fried egglplant, and cole slaw accompanied (those were my choices of soup and two veggies). I was quite satisfied at the end of the meal, especially because it was $9. The cranberry sauce needs work, couldn't get through my small taste of it (too many cranberry skins) and I didn't bother eating the cole slaw, mainly because I was full. Great attentive service. Ate alone. Wish it had Wifi.

Yelp
We had breakfast here this past Saturday. It was early, and we were seated quickly in a booth. Breakfast was standard fare. Eggs, toast and potatoes. A bit on the bland side, food came out fast though and our waitress was pleasant and efficient. I noticed that several of the other waitresses had very dirty aprons and uniforms. Strange for so early in the morning. Menu has some interesting breakfast options like fried flounder and eggs, pork chops and eggs, etc. May stop again to try one of those

Yelp
Great breakfast , great coffee . Very friendly staff . Easy parking. Lauren our waitress was super attentive and friendly . Great for our first time in Philly

Yelp
Very nice neighborhood diner. Good food, good atmosphere, and good prices. I would recommend if in the neighborhood you stop in for some fresh coffee and some awesome breakfast. I know a few years ago I would have given it a higher score because it was better years ago. I guess as time goes by things change but I will stop in when in the neighborhood I guess cause of memories growing up I want to keep memories alive.

Yelp
Just wanted to update my review..me and my date went back there recently and OMG. THE MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP MILKSHAKE WAS AMAZING. I was on a milkshake kick for a while. Even having them delivered to my house. That's how bad my addiction was getting. So, the 2nd time we went here, the food on the menu wasn't rocking my boat, but that shake addiction kicked in, and I had to order one. It was super delicious!! Plus, they gave me the extra in a separate glass. mmmmmmmmm My milkshake addiction has waned as the weather's getting colder, but next time it kicks in..I'll be back! Also, the waitress was really fun and asked me a lot of personal questions, which I didn't mind. I like friendly servers :)

Yelp
Today i had stuffed crab cakes. Not greasy or spicy. Real nice size. The carrots were glazed with cinnamon and raisins. Soooo good.today i had brisket of beef. Thin sliced and delicious. My companion had pasta. He also liked it. The eaitresses name was lauren. She was very good.

E A.

Yelp
I Read the reviews and was looking forward to a great breakfast today. Hash browns were tasteless, eggs old, scrapple so greasy. Waitress was very nice, she gets 4 stars. I won't be back. Was expensive and not good.

Yelp
Great food and absolutely the cheapest prices. You really can't beat the Mayfair and the waitress Brittany was super special. She was really attentive very personable and a real asset to this place

Yelp
I was not impressed with this place at all. The inside looks like a normal diner. It's not dirty and in fact it looks fairly clean. My reasoning behind the 2 stars is only because the waitress was very good. She was friendly and attentive and even made ginger ale for me because they didn't have it. It was probably a mixture of sprite and Pepsi which is simple enough but still she didn't have to do it. I ordered the chicken quesadilla. I asked for everything that they put in it except the chicken. So basically Cheese, mushroom, onions and so forth. I made myself perfectly clear on what I wanted. The cook messed up my order and had to make me another one. When it came out it was completely soggy and was flapping all over the place. Totally disgusting. It's pretty hard to screw up a quesadilla but this cook managed to do it. It was completely inedible. Even my fruit cup looked like the fruit had been sitting around for days. My husband got a burger and he seemed to be happy with it. The grilled cheese my daughter got was acceptable and the fries were delicious.

Luke F.

Yelp
this used to be the go to spot but ever since i've been coming here lately they have been messing up my order 9 times out of 10 and that is not a joke. The food is not that worthy to go for and i have no clue how they can mess my order up when no body is ever inside of there

Alyssa B.

Yelp
completely unprofessional we were laughing and manger walked up to us and assumed something that she did not know was true or not and mind you we are a group of teenagers she was very rude I do not recommend at all .

The waitresses are so disrespectful and rude to the costumers. The place did not adapt well to Covid and is very disorganized.
