"Part fine dining restaurant, part performance venue, Mayfair is the literal definition of dinner and a show. The under-the-sea theme makes you feel like you’ve stepped into Little Mermaid for grownups, not to mention you can see the famous Bellagio Fountains through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Waiters in white jackets serve up enormous seafood towers, tender A5 wagyu New York strip steaks, Maine lobster thermidor, and other American classics. Enjoy the champagne cocktail with a generous helping of cotton candy while you watch the singers and dancers in sparkly costumes belt out jazzy renditions of “Creep” and “Watermelon Sugar.”" - Emmy Kasten

We arrived at the hotel for my wife’s birthday at 11.40pm at night after a long delayed travel day all across the continent. When we arrived I was told our room had been given away. The booking was done by my travel agent and the cancellation policy clearly stated that if we wanted to cancel it must be done by 6pm or a penalty will apply (they had my credit card). Nowhere did it say they simply leave you high and dry at midnight without a room. The rude, dismissive way we were treated was unlike anything we have ever experienced. No apology, no suggestions, no attempt to assist. Nothing. The man that served us could literally care less whether it was a massive inconvenience, or whether we slept on the street. So in this review as a warning that if you are hell bent on staying at this hotel, don’t expect a room. One thing you can be sure of is a level of rudeness that is rare and they won’t care one way or another if it ruins your entire vacation. Be warned!

Very quaint, clean hotel with friendly staff. Safe area. Comfortable bed and pillows The one downside is the lack of storage space other than a small desk. There is a closet. But other than that you need to literally live out of your suitcase. My room was fine for one person but it would have been tight for 2 people.

My sister and I stayed for 4 nights this past week. We paid for a king room with a city view. From the moment we first entered until the moment we left, everything was amazing. The front desk staff was helpful and extremely kind. They offer free coffee, tea, and hot chocolate at all hours. The room was small, which is to be expected in New York, but it was still plenty of room. We had a closet, safe, and refrigerator (with a few other places to store things as well), and the view of St. Malachy’s across the road was beautiful. The hotel is within two blocks of at least 7 Broadway shows (that I know off the top of my head), and there is a grocery store with fresh food and produce on the corner. It is within walking distance of quite a few destinations, and several of the bus tours in town have a pick up/drop off within a block or two. The housekeeping was amazing. Everything was clean and fresh each day. We had absolutely no complaints. They had even returned my damage deposit before I reached the airport. I would be more than pleased to stay there any time I am in the city again. Thank you for making our trip a wonderful experience!

The room was clean and a decent size, the shower was big and the bed was very comfortable. It’s very close to Times Square and the theatre district so it was great to be able to walk a short distance to most of the things we were interested in. My only issue was the city noise (not the hotels fault obviously) but it did wake me up several times throughout the night. So something to be aware of if that bothers you but we just decided it was all a part of the New York experience! We would definitely stay here again.

Great hotel with a superb location. The staff is welcoming and warm. I would prefer firmer mattresses. Rooms were quiet. The hotel has been renovated very recently, you should disregard the old photos and reviews. The reality today is much improved.

Went to NYC for an overnight for a show and was thrilled this hotel was almost directly across the street from the theater. Every staff member I spoke with from check in to check out was pleasant and polite.||The Boutique bedroom was quite small BUT contained what I needed. A very comfy/cozy bed, a private bathroom w/shower and a closet. Everything was tight and I did laugh quite often at how many times I bumped by knee into the bedframe. There was a TV and a desk as well.||Everything was clean - I was happy with the room. I would not recommend the Boutique room for a couple, but would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay near the theaters. Several pubs nearby, CVS/Walgreens, grocery store, etc.||All in all, I will be back.

Had a great experience. The room was a good size considering your in NYC. A few minutes from Times Square. We were on the 5th floor, the noise wasn’t terrible. Great restaurants right around the corner. Front desk was always friendly. I would recommend & I would stay again!

Yelp
BED BUGS!!! May 29th at 8:45pm, prior to laying down we searched for bed bugs and found none, later while laying down, we found one crawling across the bed. We then alerted the staff which only offered to give us new sheets which is unacceptable. Upon further pushing they implied that we brought the bed bugs in ourselves. We then were telling others in the hotel about bed bugs and they responded by calling the police. A refund was offered but followed by calling us insane and blaming the bed bug on us. Absolutely and utterly unacceptable, staff tried to then say it wasn't a bed bug and that we have no idea what we're talking about. Ridiculous.

Yelp
I was utterly dismayed by the prejudice and combative exchanges we experienced with your staff. Throughout our two-night stay, the front desk representative repeatedly demanded that we show our room key each time we returned to the hotel. On one occasion, my friend was even prohibited from coming up to the room for a few minutes. Instead of a polite explanation of any policy changes, we were met with hostility and aggression. The situation reached an unacceptable level on the morning of the second day when, upon my arrival, I was asked to show my key, which I did without hesitation. Despite complying with the request, the front desk representative demanded that I show my key again, provide my room number, and show my ID. Following my compliance, I politely requested to speak with the night manager. To my astonishment, a tall man with a heavy Russian accent emerged and claimed to be in charge, asserting that there was no manager available as the owner was purportedly in Turkey. When I asked him to file a complaint with the front desk staff, he dismissively told me that I needed to "sleep it off." As I was unable to access my room due to my key being deactivated, I made it clear to both individuals that I was not leaving until I spoke with someone of authority to regain access to my room. In response, the tall man aggressively approached me, invading my personal space and making me feel threatened. Fearing for my safety, I stepped back and proceeded to call the police. Thankfully, the police arrived and assisted me in accessing my room. However, the trauma and stress caused by this incident are entirely unacceptable. The following day, I spoke with the manager, who provided me with written complaint documents. However, I was only offered an apology, with no accommodation and no plan for reprimanding the staff involved. Not only was this my first visit to New York City, but it was also the first time I experienced such explicit prejudice as a black man today. It is disheartening that in this day and age, I cannot dress for cold weather with a hooded jacket and skullcap without being subjected to people and their prejudiced thoughts. As two black men traveling together, this experience was significantly terrifying.

Yelp
I had to SLEEP ON THE FLOOR. Make sure you double check your booking by calling them. Their third-party service (that sends the available room list to the travel/booking agencies) listed the WRONG ROOM TYPE as available. "TWO DOUBLE BEDS" it said, in all caps, on the booking site (Chase Travel). I booked that, expecting two beds, and on arrival, turned out it was a single bed. Despite going back and forth with the hotel and Chase, neither parties were able to offer anything for me, no refund, no rebooking somewhere else, nothing. Best the hotel could do is offer me ~$30, for a $312.34 booking. Unacceptable. It was too late for me to book somewhere else for a reasonable price/location. I had no choice but to use the room and sleep on the floor. The Hotel or Chase was unable to book somewhere else, or help in any way. The Mayfair hotel people said: "it's out of our hands", "it's the third-party service's fault", "we can't do anything about it", "contact Chase Travel" When contacting Chase Travel: "it's out of our hands", "it's the third-party service's fault", "we can't do anything about it" Of the four parties involved - The hotel, the third-party listing service, Chase Travel, the customer (me), I was was the one who had to pay for the third-party service's mistake. What? Note: Chase Travel is not the third-party service. The third-party service is some random company that sits between the Mayfair Hotel and travel services like Chase. This third-party service is at fault for the erroneous "TWO DOUBLE BEDS" listing. Mayfair Hotel and Chase just shuffled the responsibility between each other, blaming the third-party service. This left me with no recourse. Mayfair Hotel is the one with ultimate responsibility here, they are the ones who contract the third-party service to post listings. They should have refunded me, or rebooked me somewhere else, at no cost to me, then figure out the problem with their service. Nope. YOU pay for the mistake. So don't book here. At Mayfair Hotel, it is YOUR responsibility to pay for THEIR third-party service's mistake. You'd think too they could have an extra portable bed they could provide in situations like this, but apparently they lack the foresight of some mistake like this happening. I would have been much more okay with this situation if they provided this extra bed. Nope, had to use the existing bedding! Basically sleeping on the floor, with just a mere blanket for padding.

Armahni S.

Yelp
I was looking for a hotel that offered a bed and they delivered. Bed was comfortable. Room was tidy though very small but that is expected for $166 on Airbnb. TV service was difficult to figure out. Phone did not offer an option to call front desk for assistance. Very inconvenient for those on the 4th floor.

Yelp
This place was probably once very grand, this place needs to go on a business rescue show. The front entrance handle has been missing for the two days I've been here, I'm sure it was gone long before. You are greeted by a bright yellow ceiling with a huge white patch down the middle and some storage situation where the bellhop would be.There is a new rolled up still in plastic area rug and cardboard boxes being stored in the lobby and everyone seems to be perfectly okay with that. As you make your way up to your room in the super suspect elevator that sometimes works and has lead poison paint chipping off of the ancient doors. The toile wallpaper in our room is detaching, the knobs on the closet are falling off, the carpet is pulling away from the base boards and everything needs to be repainted, cleaned, fumigated and possibly burned. This once grand hotel is a mere shell of its self. The manager also charged me for the whole stay at check-in! Who does that? He said its how things are done and actually said "you're not in Kansas anymore." Oh Really? Well I have traveled all over the world and the only time I was charged for the full stay upfront was in Japan. I'll be sure and charge all my meals from the greasy spoon they call a restaurant to my room and make a shit load of long distance calls and walk right out the door cause I'm paid in full! Immediate Renovation of hotel and staff could turn this place around. Please take the $1,111.16 you charged me before my head even hit the pillow and buy a f*cking handle for the front door, some paint, and a clue of how a hotel should be run. I gave it two stars because the only thing keeping this hovel in business is it's location. In the Theatre District super close to Time Square and Central Park.

Yelp
Great location Some of the staff is grumpy and aloof. The Belgian lady is very nice though. Elevator is pretty YIKES! Rooms small, run down. Bed fine Would only recommend for location and price

Karen V.

Yelp
The reviews had me terrified about this place but it wasn't so bad. If you can handle a hostel, you can handle this place. Sheets were clean, no pests, hot water, free WiFi, etc. The decor of the room is creepy, the management is kind of stingy with no early check ins and charging you if you need them to hold your luggage once you've checked out, but that's manageable. The elevator freaked me out too and I took the stairs during my stay. Location is on point so that was a nice touch. I will add that my fiancé left his glasses behind while checking out and the staff was nice enough to hold onto it until we came back. Kudos to the staff for that!

Degustator J.

Yelp
Straight out of a nightmare! Yes it's conveniently located to various theater places, but that's all! When I first walked into my broom closet sized room with horrible yet matching PINK wallpaper, curtains, and bed cover, it looked like someone ate a bunch of cheap Victorian paintings, washed them down with gallon of pink Pepto Bismol and threw up all over... The cherry on top of this dank cake was the window beyond which a pair of pigeons were noisily humping with gusto on top of an impressive turd pile in a crawl space a couple of feet deep. Wow, just wow!

Jenny C.

Yelp
The price and location are the winning combination. The size of the room, the poor wi-fi, and the horrendous decor... those are what you pay for. We had great service there and were very happy with our stay. There was a safe to lock your stuff up, but no fridge or coffee in the room. Also, a lot of the television channels didn't work, but that's not why I went to NYC! And don't plan on using the iron and ironing board... it was horribly stained. But like I said, we were very happy with our stay knowing we were paying for a "cheap" hotel! We went to happy hour at the connected restaurant, and the burgers were very average. Maybe others items are better!

Geoff M.

Yelp
The Mayfair is located in the theater district, two blocks from Times Square. You can't go wrong with the location or the price. The hotel itself is very small, desperately needs a facelift, the rooms (707) are extremely small. My twin mattress was very soft and springy, one side of the mattress sagged like an 80 year old prostitutes vagine! I had a difficult time staying on the bed. The air conditioning was so loud, it vibrated the entire room, including the bed. Even though the hotel is old, the rooms are clean, the wifi is good and the staff is very nice. If they sank a little money on giving the hotel a facelift, they would have a winner.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Mayfair for a night when we saw a Broadway show. It's small and full of character, but I wouldn't recommend it for more than a night. The hotel staff is friendly and it's in the heart of Midtown, which is great, but it's built on old bones... and it shows. In particular, there was one aspect which I found unforgiveable: the AC units. It might seem nitpicky, but I like to sleep with at least a fan on for white noise (especially over city traffic sounds). These AC units, however, have clearly not been cleaned in years. As soon as you turn on the unit, sooty clumps of black dust are spewed all over the room and bed, including the pillows. This freaked me out, so I decided to leave it running for a couple hours during the play to hopefully clear out the grates. Turns out it just unearths layers and layers of dust. I woke up with a clump of decade-old dust in my EAR. That left a lasting impression. Upon checkout, the employee didn't bother asking how my stay was, and I could tell why. The place has funky old vintage wallpaper and an interesting aesthetic, but it needs a thorough cleaning that it clearly hasn't received in years. The shower also leaves a lot to be desired... there was an old, rusty shower head that sprayed everywhere and provided really poor water pressure. So, in all, I really WANTED to like it. But any hotel that has cleanliness issues is automatically bumped down in rating. The restaurant Cielo (attached to the lobby) is great though.

Yelp
I loved this hotel! I stayed a week here and it was so peaceful, calm, very quiet, and very old New York vibe. The details are cute and different. The bed and bedding were extremely comfortable. Air conditioner worked perfectly. The room is small but that's all I needed, I loved that and thought it was cute and cozy; it's perfect for people just using it to sleep/shower. Clean! The restaurant was yummy as well. This hotel is located near everything. Very pleased with this hotel and pricing, would absolutely stay again! Very pleased.

Yelp
My partner and I stayed in this hotel for a week in November, 2016. We arrived late at night, bedraggled, desperate for sleep and a temperate room. We got one of those two things, but it was so worth it. We were told that we couldn't control the heat, but we could turn on the air conditioner to combat it. This resulted in a lot of nakedness, head shaking, and bad environmental karma, but that's our only 'complaint', not that it's really a complaint. I mean, it's New York, it's a heritage building, it's a cheap hotel, and New York demands that you build character. After we checked in, my professional-pianist partner Patrick (hereafter referred to as Quad-P), sat down at the charming grand piano in the lobby, and played some jazz. The kind, seen-it-all man from the front desk gruffly gave us a room upgrade, whilst the emotions behind his eyes combined to betray his true, beautiful soul. Perhaps he was from Yonkers. Anyway, our room was amazing. Truly incredible. The bathroom was as spacious as one could expect, everything was clean, there were mirrors everywhere that gave you the illusion of living in a Stephen King movie (if you like that sort of thing), and there was hot water for days. The bedroom part was where things got exciting. Not in the way a bedroom is usually exciting, either. The comforter, the lampshades, the wallpaper, the headboard, and by the end, my retinas, all boasted the same salmon-pink pattern of joyful Victorian children repeating over and over. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing this was. Beyond that, you're half a block away from the grocery store (we assume you're travelling on a budget), and in America they sell alcohol IN THE GROCERY STORE! So you can go to Manhattan and drink in your hotel room instead of going out! You're also half a block from Times Square (and Sbarro's, but, like, why?), and right next to The Book of Mormon. The show, not the book. All in all, this hotel and its terrifyingly tiny wooden elevator made my life complete. I can't speak for Quad-P, however. His heart is still with the grand piano he left behind.

Sharmin B.

Yelp
We were very pleased with our stay at the Mayfair. Cozy, charming, and the location can't be beat. Our room was clean, comfortable, and very quiet, unlike other rooms we've occupied in the Hell's Kitchen area. Good bed! Although this hotel is old and has been well-used, we were very happy with the cleanliness. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The lobby is panelled, hung with photographs of well-known celebrities of the '30s and '40s, and furnished with a grand piano and comfy plaid couches. A good Italian restaurant is also there in the hotel. We will be returning.

Carol G.

Yelp
We spent the weekend in NYC and booked this hotel, front staff was very nice and the pictures on the wall were great but that was about it. Rooms very very small even for NYC. Rooms were outdated, bathroom leaked, doors did not shut and the best of all is we were told we were not allowed to bring food or drinks back to our room. You had to eat in the lobby. I felt like i was a kid again!!! Would not recommend this hotel.

Yelp
Mayfair New York Hotel is housed in an early 20th Century building that was converted into a hospitality center in 1995, according to the concierge. From across 49th Street it looks to be from the Golden Age with all its gingerbread details, but inside it feels older, like a grand dame who has seen better days. Faded glory. But, that is the charm of Mayfair. It is past its prime, but still proud and standing tall. The rooms are Manhattan Small, and sometimes you must step out into the hall to turn around. But, I was in a King Room (605), and loved the space. A little dusty, but with an air of quietude and comfort. The large bed was very comfy. The built-in cabinets were more than adequate to hold the little I was carrying. My room had double windows, modern on the outside, wood framed on the inside. Nice touch. More importantly, the bathroom was in good shape with lots of hot water and pressure. WARNING - Turn the cold water on first in the sink to avoid scalding. The hot water is dangerous! The shower did not seem to have that problem. Yet, Mayfair is far from perfect. It is too old to be cleaned well, and the dusty places are apparent. If you have mold issues, it might not be the safest place to stay. The windows (if you have any in your room) are filthy. It is impossible to see the streets well. The free internet works poorly from my experience, and I was required to use my phone for most access. Still, the staff is friendly, multi-lingual and helpful. I was able to drop off my bags both before and after my stay so I could spend more time in the City without hassle. The Italian restaurant and bar are lovely and a nice place for your late dinner or nightcap. The price is very good for its Theater District location, especially if you use a discount travel site to book. I got in for well under $200 per. Would I stay at Mayfair again? If Broadway was my primary purpose for being in the City, I would. Otherwise, I tend to prefer a bit quieter setting farther west in Hell's Kitchen, or south in Chelsea, Soho or even Chinatown.

Vanessa W.

Yelp
I loved my 5 night stay here. The room was a bit small, but I came here to sleep and shower. With Times Square and the rest of Manhattan waiting to be discovered, I had little time to rest. Mayfair Hotel is in the heart of Manhattan; everything is relatively close. There are many subway stations around...as well as Jamba Juice, Starbucks, cybercafe right next door. Hell's Kitchen is just a couple blocks away - and it is definitely very cool to see where New Yorkers wine and dine. The room was clean and so incredibly charming. The bathroom had white and black tiled floors..it is so New York. The bedroom was lined with a bright blue historical figure wallpaper which was super cute. The staff is incredibly helpful, definitely possessed personality. They were nice enough to get us a nice towncar for a ride to the airport. I loved the Mayfair and will definitely come back next time in NYC. Another plus for those obsessed with musicals -- Chicago, Grease, Hairspray, Wicked are just blocks (Chicago was right across the street!) from the hotel.

Donald P.

Yelp
WOW....I knew it was going to be small, but I guess I wasn't prepared for how small it was. The room is just big enough for the bed. Really it feels like living out of a closet. If a place to crash is all you need this place is as good as it gets. I'm definitely a fan. When I come up to NY, it's because I want to hang out and check out all the great sites, not because I want to lounge around in a hotel. If you want that luxury lounge feeling you can always go across the street to one of many upscale hotels for drinks or a meal I suppose. Seriously I just can't get over my reaction when I first saw how small this room was. This must be the American version of the Japanese capsule hotels.

Jon D.

Yelp
Not even fit for the homeless. Dirty, disgusting rooms and thread bare carpeting, night clerk obnoxious and rude, rooms so small you cannot swing a cat in, Avoid like the plague. Management are from hell and the NY health department need to close this dump down immediately

Lina R.

Yelp
Yes the rooms are a little small and raggedy but the location is excellent. Just a few blocks from Times Square. Walking distance to many attractions NYC has to offer. The owner was very nice, accommodating lady! Check ins are strictly at 3pm and not sooner however you can leave your bags and go exploring one of the greatest cities while you wait

Eli R.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst hotel I've ever stayed at!! The rooms are old and outdated. The wallpaper was peeling off the wall. The rooms have an old mildew smell. I stayed 3 nights and every day the elevator was broken. Do you know how much of a pain it is to walk up 5 flights of stairs after being out all day?! When I was checking out the elevator broke down again and I almost fell down the stairs trying to carry my bags down. The room key would constantly deactivate, I had to ask for new keys every day I was there. They said it could've been because of my cell phone, but even when I would keep my phone and key separate the same thing would happen. Because the hotel was so sketch I placed the "do not disturb sign" on the door so the room would not be cleaned. I came back back and the room was cleaned. The only reason I stayed here was because I booked it thru a mystery deal from Priceline. I attempted to book a 4 star hotel and the site glitched and this is what was booked and they refused to give me a refund. Location might be good, but it's not worth it! DO NOT STAY HERE!

Rasesh K.

Yelp
Very dirty hotel, old everything, torn carpet in the room, broken tiles and broken mirror in the bathroom, dirty linens, cockroach infested. I am not sure who gave this hotel 3.5 star status. There are usually many other hotels in the city around the same price point, better avoid this one.

Ina T.

Yelp
Perfect location!!! Great staff!!! Everything you need for a simple room. Not fancy or roomy but it was warm, comfortable and bathroom shower was awesome. I was pleasantly surprised at the conditions of the hotel for the great low price. I would come back for sure. It's right next to Book of Mormon show and across from a chapel. Right in the heart of the city where your a walk away from everything.

Yelp
RUN!! The first night our door knob fell off the door so my boyfriend was locked inside the bathroom. The tiles in the bathroom were cracked and there was faded old wall paper decoration around the room and headboard. Not ideal, but since we're young we didn't mind too much. But on the last night of our stay it was snowing and the next morning I woke up to about a bucket full of dirty brown water that splashed on my face from a leak in the ceiling. Absolutely disgusting. Luckily the staff was very nice and gave me a refund for that night of the stay. I will say this though, the location was perfect for Times Square and broadway. We walked across the street to the broadway show Chicago and didn't have to wait in line.

Yelp
Elevator was broken the entire time. Room keys never worked. Bathroom was dirty. Smells of mold, mildew and gas on the floors. Disgusting carpets in rooms. Peeling wallpaper and TV cuts in and out. Also staff entered our room when we requested they don't. When we mentioned something didn't work they were very nonchalant about it

Yelp
This hotel is such a nice small hotel that you don't even know that it's there. It's a hop skip and a jump from Times Square and also Rockefeller Plaza. Close access to the subway and there's tons of food choices nearby...not to mention there's an Italian restaurant next door. Since I traveled by myself, this hotel is great if you are staying by yourself...it's really not s great hotel for families. I wish this hotel had another elevator since there's only one. I stayed on the 5th floor and one must have patience if you are waiting for the elevator because it does frequently stop between the 7 floors. Good luck if the elevator is not working, at least the stairs aren't narrow. Good luck if you want a scenic view of your surroundings, you're not gonna get it-my view was that of an office and a roof. The staff was very polite-as a matter of fact, they even sang happy birthday to me since my trip in NYC was on birthday. They really treat their guests like VIPs and I will be staying at this hotel again whenever I'm in New York again.

Yelp
The service counter lady was very rude. Made us wait until exactly 3 pm to let us check-in even though we saw her "checking to see if the room was ready" for other groups. Upon checkout, there was an extra surcharge that was not explained to us when we checked in. The place is very outdated. The restaurant connected is rated a B by the board of health which made us wonder how clean our room truly was. We had stains on our sheets and our blinds in the bathroom were broken. Overall, very outdated and needs renovation badly.

Yelp
The hotel is in bad condition, very deteriorated, it doesn't look clean, the rooms are way too smal with no outside light at all, just very dark. Customer service was ok but not the best, need to improve a more professional way to attend guests.

Yelp
Let me just say, this hotel delivered! I came for a five day excursion, situated right in the middle of the Theater District, and minutes from Rockefeller Center I was at " Hello." Sure, it is a small hotel. But traveling by one self it is perfect. When you're sight seeing or walking the city, you don't need a " big" room. Be prepared for a very tight elevator and squeaky stairs that feel that the railing may come loose. I would much rather come back to the Mayfair then go across the street to the Doubletree. Service by the front desk staff was very warm and welcoming. Leaving and entering each day I got "have a great day!" It took me awhile to believe that " Chicago" was my neighbor. Tons of amenities conveniently located. I guess the only negative would be no cooler to bring snacks or water in from the day. Many thanks!

Yelp
Stayed here one night and was only myself. Room was small but comfortable. Stayed on the 6th floor and when it was time to leave the elevator wouldn't work. Great location staff was friendly.

Yelp
This is a budget hotel (one step shy of a boutique hotel) which is right in the middle of the theater district. The rooms are nice but not roomy. The bed was very comfortable (king), the TV was a nice Samsung hdtv, the shower was nice and hot and the double windows and curtains kept most of the street noise out, and the AC (nice remote!) pumped out nice cold air in late May. I don't have anything negative to say but I would add that this is truly a budget hotel so you need to be realistic in your expectations. I read some of the negative reviews and I would say that is why they are negative; they expected the Marriott or Hilton for half the price; don't be unrealistic in your expectations! The price is great!!! You also get a discount at the parking garage down the street ($35/day). The staff is wonderful and was extremely helpful on our recent visit. We love this place after our first stay (May 2015) and will be back. We love NY and try to go when possible and have stayed in uptown areas near Central Park for twice the rate. While those locales do have nicer rooms and are fancier they don't justify their high costs to us since we would rather spend the money on shows or dinner. All we do in our room is sleep and shower.

Yelp
The place might be in reasonable distance of the district but the damn place was too small & also lacked the amenities of most rooms like a coffee-maker & such. Bed was comfy but their clock to the desk & radio didn't work either so thus a drop in points badly. Next time I do a hotel in Manhattan I'll do that my own. ffor the fact this was so badly small & no sight outside I'LL PASS!

Yelp
Great little boutique hotel on 49th St right next to the Eugene O'Neill Theater. It's a little dated, like the rugs on the stairs getting threadbare and the windows are pretty dreadful-- old and drafty. But the location is supremely good. Not too close to the insanity of Times Square, very close to dozens of restaurants and sights. Got a deal through American Express and saved $70 on two nights. It feels like the 1930s inside, in a good way. Hot water in bathroom is super hot and beds are comfortable. Would recommend.

Yelp
This is a hotel for a visitor who doesn't plan to spend much time in his or her room. --The location is excellent, the bed comfortable and the shower has good pressure. --The TV has very few channels and the wi-fi is terrible--I got a stronger signal from the hotel across the street, and I couldn't connect to their wi-fi at all on my phone. So, if you're the type of person who demands a luxurious room to spend a lot of time in, this is not the place for you. If you want a comfy place to sleep before heading out for the day, and a nice space to unwind before bed, this is it. It is ideally located next to all the major Broadway venues/ Times Square/ Rockefeller Center, if that's what you're going to the city for. My room was over the street, and with the windows closed and the A/C on, traffic noise was minimal. Staff were pleasant and helpful. It was exactly as I expected, and my only complaint was the lack of a coffee maker both in the room or the lobby.

Yelp
Great location! Close to most Broadway Theater's/Time Square. Small and old hotel, but the staff was friendly. Quite Hotel and seemed safe. There are definitely more upscale, bigger and nicer places near by,but they typically cost 3 times the price as this place. I would stay there again because given the great location and lower price it is a great deal and is hard to beat.

Yelp
"Either the wallpaper goes or I do." -Oscar Wilde Based on previous reviews, and based on the price for this part of Manhattan, I wasn't expecting a large room. However I also was not expecting: -The absolutely hideous wallpaper pattern of red colonial people(??) doing various things on white. Someone liked this so much they used it on the wallpaper, the curtains, and the pillows. Perhaps the ugliest room I have ever been in. Not just hotel room- room of any kind. -The room was so small that the only choices are to freeze with the A/C on or burn with it off. -The "front desk" button on my phone did absolutely nothing when pressed. -The little book in the room claimed that the hotel has a restaurant and that you could have a "glass of wine" in the lobby. Unless I was meant to bring my own in a paper bag, this seems like a work of complete fantasy. There is not even a vending machine, -The staff were just not competent hotel staff. No one smiled. No one asked if they could help me with anything. They act like they are working at a gas station or 7-11. Whoever used the term "boutique hotel" for this place... I don't even know how to end that sentence. THEY CHARGED MY WHOLE STAY TO MY CREDIT CARD WHEN I CHECKED IN. Let me say that again: THEY CHARGED MY WHOLE STAY TO MY CREDIT CARD WHEN I CHECKED IN. Didn't ask me; just charged me. Excuse me? I am a grown-up staying at a hotel at Manhattan. Unless you charge by the hour, or unless it's Spring Break and I'm a college senior, NO. Just no. Besides the fact that that's not how you run a hotel, it's borderline illegal to charge someone's credit card that much and not even have them sign. I suppose it's a savvy move on their part, to keep people from bailing once they see the room, but NO. I get it, it's a cheap hotel. But it's not that cheap. For four nights I still paid almost what I pay for a month of rent at home. There is no reason this place couldn't be a decent affordable boutique hotel, but it would require a remodel, new management, and the replacement of the staff with professionals.

Yelp
I do not recommend that you stay in this hotel. On our second day there, our room was burglarized, everything of ours in the room stolen. The management initially said they were responsible and would reimburse our loss. We replaced our stolen items in good faith that they would honor their words. After submitting our reimbursement receipts, they abruptly and with no explanation said they were not responsible and were not reimbursing us for our loss. There was no negligence on our part whatsoever. We entrusted the safety of our things with the Mayfair staff, only to have every item except our toothbrushes stolen from the locked room: -- We left our door locked. We checked it twice. -- When we returned, the door was still locked. -- There was no sign of forced entry. The police report supports this. -- The room was opened by Mayfair staff to clean the room. This was the ONLY time on record that someone entered the room during the time that all of our things were stolen. When we returned the room was clean, the door was locked, and all of our property was missing. We were told that only our keys and the staff passkeys could open the door. The hotel was clearly negligent, and responsible for our loss. I did not feel safe there. The management did absolutely nothing after the burglary to make us feel comfortable or safe in the hotel. They didn't even offer us a discount on our bill. Aside from behaving reprehensibly----the manager didn't even speak to us except as we checked out, making us wait for an hour, and then the empty promise to reimburse us----the hotel itself is a miserable and dangerous place to visit: the rug on the stairs is frayed and someone will most likely trip and get hurt, a week earlier people were trapped in the elevator, the rooms look onto a dark alley and onto windows piled with inches of pigeon droppings, no sunlight at all, the rooms are small and they stink. It's a wretched place, appropriately situated in the heart of the theater district, almost a stage set for the worst hotel of one's nightmares.

Yelp
Well, it did the job we needed it to do. My friend had stayed here a year prior and properly prepared me for what to expect so nothing upset me. We chose this hotel based on location [very close to the heart of Times Square, right next door to Book of Mormon] and because it was the cheapest in this area. Now let me just say that "cheapest" isn't what I consider cheap in the Midwest, but hey, this is NYC, we were able to afford it and you pay a premium for location. Pros: Friendly staff, decently comfy bed, felt safe, usable bathroom [nothing weird], super great location Cons: Crazy weird wallpaper, small rooms, no ice/water/vending machines anywhere we saw so we were hitting up Starbucks a lot for water. The good thing is, I didn't go to NYC to hang out in our hotel and this place was very convenient. Worth it if you are looking for a place to just crash in the city.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for NINE nights in August 2003 for our honeymoon in NYC. We'd read reviews that the rooms were small, but nothing could prepare us for the reality of this closet that we called home for 9 days. We had a double (full size) bed. Yeah, pretty crazy for honeymooners. Now, this was in August and NYC was flippin' steaming. The room came with A/C but only had the option of being off or on full blast. Only having been married for 2 weeks at that time, were not used to sleeping together and I totally hogged the covers. Consequently, my husband developed a cold that lasted him the entire duration of the trip. It was a bad one, too, because he couldn't smell anything, taste anything, and wanted to sleep all day. It was not pretty. We did manage to go out every day, however. And the days that we slept in, we went out at night. What I loved about this hotel was that we could decide to go anywhere interesting in NYC and it would be a feasible option given the convenience of the location. Half a block off Broadway, Time Square & Hell's Kitchen were a couple of blocks away, everything was close by and many businesses around there are open all the time! Our flight out of NYC was early in the morning (6am) so we checked out the day before and planned to spend the night at JFK. We left our bags at the hotel and that was fine. At 4pm, the whole city experienced a blackout. In fact, the blackout applied to the entire Northeastern seaboard + Ontario!! In flippin' August! It was SO hot. People were going crazy because ATMs weren't working, the MTA subways were shut down, cab services were limited, restaurants were closed, and basically all of Manhattan was shut down. Needless to say, we couldn't get to the airport that night. We were very impressed with the management & customer service people at the Mayfair Hotel because they actually let us stay in the lobby that night while many people in suits had to sleep on sidewalks right outside because they couldn't get home. (Oh, did I mention that there was a rat infestation in the city at the same time?) The next morning, they helped us get a cab to the airport and we were one of the lucky flights that flew out that day. I didn't have the best experience in NYC, but the Mayfair would be an excellent choice for short stays (see below). Stay here if you: -like to go to Broadway shows -want to have good access to the subway -enjoy having all the excitement just right outside the door at ANY time of the day -want to stay somewhere pretty safe (I'd feel safe walking around late at night) -like to stay out late -are not willing to pay an arm and a leg -don't mind the small rooms Don't stay here if you: -want to lounge around the hotel all day and watch cable; the rooms are tiny and I can't imagine lounging there being all that comfortable -want a hotel with a pool and a spa and an exercise room, etc -are on a long honeymoon and one of you is sick the whole time Pros: Location, cost, free internet, customer service (helpful when asked) Cons: Room size, 1 elevator

Yelp
Perfect, perfect, perfect location, reasonably priced and, they let me check-in at 7am. Rooms are super small, but that was fine with me because so am I. My only complaint: because it was so cold out, the heat was on full blast. I had to turn it down and open the window for fresh air. Will definitely stay here again when I travel solo.

Yelp
Location location location I am only giving this hotel three stars, but I need to preface that with some points. This is a "tier 2" hotel, so don't expect anything like the Doubletree or even Sheraton. This is also an old NYC hotel, so you can expect very small rooms with a vista of the airshaft. So go in with those expectations. The room I had was small, but larger than I thought. The bathroom, which is usually a closet, was quite large and the shower was excellent. Very very hot water (with a temperature gauge) and good pressure. The TV is circa 1995. Don't even know if it works. But they had a computer in the room, which I have never seen. Other good points are location: 1-2 blocks from two different subway lines, that will take you anywhere in Manhattan in minutes. 3 Blocks to half price theater tickets at TKTS. Across the street from St. Malachy's which is an old church where actors have gone for years. I don't know if they still do, they're a pretty Godless bunch nowadays. It's also a block from Colony records. If you don't know what that is, never mind those who do will be interested to know that. Now some of the not so good things so you can steel yourself to the moment. Rap music in the slighty-seedy lobby. That's right, rap. I have never heard of that before. And the elevator is tiny, so small you could never swing a cat in it; though you can tell by all the scratch marks on the wood that somebody did try.

Yelp
I wish there was a minus score to give this dirt hole. This is the most dirty place I've ever seen. The pillows are brownish from lack on washing. They lied to us when we were booking on the phone saying the room they'll reserve for us fits 3 people. We're 2 adults and a toddler and the room is a nightmare we can't fit in it with our two bags and stroller, we literally use the bed to climb on when moving from one side of the room to the other. But what really set us off are the following: - while filling the tub for our child , we were shocked that the water filling the tub was filthy brown. This is the same water we've been showering and itching because of using it ! - the house keeping lady tried opening the room while we were sleeping at 8 am and then again at 10 am and started YELLING at us with utter rage because we called front desk last night asking for a floor vacuum because our child spilled corn flakes on the carpet. OMG !!!! I never thought in my life I'd be yelled at this bad from a stranger let alone a hotel employee whose job is to be nice to guests Stay away from this disgusting excuse for a hotel.

Yelp
I loved the old vintage look and spirit of this hotel! I needed a very last minute reservation in the city... I'm talking night before reservations for a Friday-Monday night stay. I couldn't have a found a more perfect hotel in the near center of the city at a last minute price of about $550 total for 3 nights. That's unheard of in NYC! My room was clean and the perfect size for me. I will definitely stay there again next time I'm in the city!!

Yelp
Terrible Terrible Terrible. I would not recommend! The hotel is old, the elevator is rusty and the lobby is dirty, but that is not why I don't recommend the hotel. Our room's air conditioner did not work. We notified the bellhop who said that he would report it to maintenance. Maintenance never showed up. We notified the bellhop a second time and when we returned to our room the window was open and the fan was on. Poor solution, but they felt that they had solved the problem. In the middle of the night we called again when we couldn't sleep to request a fan that could be pointed towards us. They said that the fans were locked up for the night. All of this was pretty terrible, but the next morning we asked for a reduced rate due to our terrible night's sleep. The front desk attendant, Tina, was very rude and told us that she couldn't do anything because the manager wasn't in. She said that she would put in a note in their records in a little bit, but no one was waiting so I told her that I'd stand there until it was done. She didn't seem trustworthy. When we called for a partial refund the manager did not have any note in the system. Agh! Stay away from this untrustworthy hotel!

Yelp
Was in NYC for 3 days figure might be interesting to stay near times square. This place was extremely close to times square and central park which is nice. But pay attention to your credit card charges... apparently they make mistakes in charging additional charges of $350+ on a $4 booking fee charge. Not very happy when I saw my credit card bill when I already PAID in advance to see a 3 night stay go over $1000 on a closet size room. Then to be told to call back later because they can't fix it till the next day... Overall, I was never greeted while i was there and no real service was offered when i checked in. For a Hotel it felt a lot like a Motel

Yelp
I had a wonderful two-night stay here in a relatively spacious, quiet room. The night manager, a very kind, intelligent recent college graduate, was very helpful. Made me feel at home. All very old school New York. Recommended.

Yelp
Love the location, mediocre service - perfect place to crash for a night. It's inexpensive, and located right in the center of Times Square. I had a late check-in and the guy at the front desk decided to poke fun at my Red Sox Mastercard - I don't know if he was trying to be witty, especially when a guest is tired and PAYING to stay there. At least the bellhop guy made up for the desk guy's inability to joke with a real joke poking fun at NYC natives . . . After getting all that paperwork done I dragged myself up to the 7th floor (room 709). I knew there would be a tiny room, but I really didn't expect it to be THAT small. I opened the door and about a foot away was a twin-sized bed with too many pillows. The desk was placed another foot away from the bed under the TV. The bathroom only had a standing shower, and the door barely missed hitting the shower stall. I definitely was way too tired to care at this point about the size of the room. I really couldn't figure out how to use the heat, either - it seemed that the only thermostat in the room controlled the air conditioner that blew in cold air and not-so-cold air (not too good for a chilly February night). At least my shower stall was clean and the bathroom was spotless. The next morning, going down the elevator was a real trip, especially being on the 7th floor. Luckily, I got in it first, and it quickly filled up with a 4-person capacity (less than that with luggage). We basically had to reject four floors' worth of guests . . . guess it was good that I stayed so high up. I had the hotel hold two bags for me at $2 each after checking out; at this point, the new desk person was friendly and accommodating. This is definitely a place where compromise and patience go hand in hand; be totally prepared when you first walk in.

Ashish T.

Yelp
The worst experience ever, customer service was a disaster, they don't have any manners and lack basic attiquates on how to interact with customers. We reached a few hours early and wanted to check if we could do an early checkin since we were going to checkout way before our checkout time. Rude staff, unfriendly and I don't recommend anyone to stay here until they have a friendly staff who could be more accommodating

Yelp
Seriously, stay at this hotel! My mom and I went to NYC for a Broadway weekend and wanted to do it for as cheap as possible. I stumbled upon this hotel which is nicely priced, but there were mixed reviews about it. But I decided to just go for it, and I am so glad that I did! It is a small little hotel that almost gets lost among the hustle and bustle of the city. It reminded me of some pencions that I have stayed at in Europe. Yes, the lobby isn't grand and it's a little dark, yes the elevator is really small, sure the hallways are a little dingy, but really, who cares?!?!?! The room was great, small but totally fine for my mom and I. Our room had these little cabinets on the walls on each side of the bed and we each kept all of our clothes and stuff in there so that we didn't have to keep getting out the suitcase and that was so handy. There was an iron and ironing board in the room which I was not expecting. There was a little table with a chair, a small tv, a good sized closet (we hung up the rest of our clothes and stored our shoes and suitcase in there) and a wall safe. The bathroom was really big, enough room for 2 to get ready in. The shower was great, not the strongest water pressure, but it was hot! The staff was nice enough, they can arrange a car back to the airport for you and they will hold your bags for $2 at the front desk after you've checked out. This hotel is literally next door to Spring Awakening, across the street from Chicago, and about 20 steps to Browadway. We were able to get to all of our shows in about 10 minutes, while walking in heels! This hotel was awesome! So if you are going to NYC on a budget and can handle matching wallpaper, pillow shams, lampshades, and curtains, the Mayfair is the place for you!
