The Best Butcher Shops In Boston - Boston - The Infatuation

"Mayflower Poultry, with its infamous “Live Poultry, Fresh Killed” sign, has been a Cambridge staple since 1932. While the city no longer allows roaming chickens (or their subsequent culling) in the store, Mayflower still offers affordable hormone and antibiotic-free poultry products - they’re just processed elsewhere. There are also some halal choices available. Despite the name, Mayflower sells non-winged things as well - including beef, pork, goat, and rabbit, just to name a few." - joel ang

East Cambridge Biz Association Buys ‘Live Poultry Fresh Killed’ Sign | Eater Boston

"The longtime East Cambridge storefront is best known for its iconic “Live Poultry Fresh Killed” sign; after the shop closed the physical sign and its trademarked design went up for auction and the East Cambridge Business Association purchased both for $22,500. The nonprofit says it will coordinate with city officials to reinstall the sign in a public spot rather than hide it away, and is rolling out new merchandise featuring the design — a move welcomed by local fans who were saddened by the store’s closure and who view the sign as a symbol of Cambridge Street and the small-business community." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Mayflower Poultry, Home of the Iconic ‘Live Poultry Fresh Killed’ Sign, Will Close Its Cambridge Storefront | Eater Boston

"For more than 75 years this poultry and meat wholesaler has been anchored by an iconic yellow-chicken sign that proclaims "Live Poultry — Fresh Killed" in bold black letters; although live birds haven't been processed onsite for many years, the trademarked (since 2005) signage has become a beloved — and sometimes divisive — local landmark. The longtime property at 621 Cambridge St. has been sold and the sign and its design will be auctioned on August 26, with the owner planning to donate 10% of the proceeds to food-rescue nonprofit Food For Free and the auctioneer committing 20% of the buyer premium to the same group. The proprietor reportedly tried to purchase the building himself as prices climbed toward $5 million, and the business — now primarily wholesale — will continue operations by subletting space inside the Boston Meat Market off Route 93. The 1862 structure, listed on the National Register as the former Union Railway Car Barn, faces proposed facade renovations that require Cambridge Historical Commission approval (to be discussed at a public meeting on August 5), and branded merchandise (shirts, hats, aprons) is currently available online for those who want to keep the emblem in circulation." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

I love this establishment. Always very fresh and clean. I have gotten many interesting things from here and it has really expanded my cooking palette. I used to love there jumbo brown eggs but sadly they were too pricey to keep in store. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Every time I find myself in Cambridge I make a point to stop in.

Fantastic chicken at great prices. Also have fresh eggs. The place is spotless with out any bad odors like most butcheries. The staff is always efficient and courteous. I can't go back to grocery store chicken.

Mayflower is the best! The prices are wonderful, they take specialty orders, you can get a number of exotic meats and inventory - Louis always takes good care of me when I call and make a special request - I believe they also stock the chickens from Amish country so they're pretty good!

I've been a Mayflower customer for many years. Great quality poultry at a fair price, and the crew here are wonderful!!

Live Poultry, Fresh Killed!! Well, sadly that's no longer possible however they have the best chicken period! This is the place where to ask if you're seeking all sorts of poultry, phasan, capon ducks. They also have pork, beef, rabbit, goat. If you're a true meat lover, you can find interesting cuts such as tripe. The butchers are always very kind and helpful. The perfect neighborhood spot!! Furthermore, they prepare food for cats and dogs too (raw diet). I do buy food for my cat there, but I usually cook it.

Google
Mayflower does not sell fresh killed chickens. Their chickens come from a supplier in Delaware. Not even local to Cambridge! This is a case of false representation. We bought a chicken and it was good but nothing special compared with what you might find in a supermarket. It was missing a wing. We won’t bother going there again.
