The Best Dive Bars in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Minneapolis-born Polish pro wrestler Stan Mayslack and his wife Ann “Butch” Mayslack opened Mayslack’s in 1955. While Stan whipped up garlic roast beef sandwiches in the kitchen, Butch ran the till. The pair hosted many a rowdy polka night. These days, Mayslack’s hosts plenty of live bands (and plays polka on the jukebox) and is still serving its famous slow-roasted beef sandwiches, heaped with banana peppers and onions and served au jus." - Justine Jones

Where to Find a Good Cheesesteak in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"Northeast’s live music institution offers an unorthodox, but tasty, Philly using its own in-house shaved roast beef, peppers, onions, and melted cheese on a hoagie bun. Mayslack’s also offers several side options like fries, tots, onion rings, or cole slaw." - Ali Elabbady

Came in for drinks, pull tabs and darts. Had a blast. Tons of bar seating, 2 sides with booths and high top tables plus the back patio. There’s a stage idk if they do shows but it seemed like it! Our server was awesome, separate tabs and checked in the perfect amount. We didn’t eat but the beer was cold and the shots came out fast!

We went here on a Saturday afternoon. It was pretty quiet but there were a few people at very the Bar. It got busier about an hour later around 1pm. This is a classic dive bar. It is full of interesting posters, signs and photos. I really like this place and I plan to come back one evening to chill have some drinks, listen to I music and just enjoy the atmosphere. This place has its own character and the service n is pretty good. Those who know Mayslacks love this place.

April 6, 2025. Nothing has changed since my last visit about 20 years ago. That has to be a good sign. The “Original” was just as I remembered. Coleslaw onions yellow things and a pickle, all just great. Oh, and the little container of au jus. One thing I can’t figure out. This bar had a scene in one of the Grumpy Old Men movies. I could not find one bit of evidence that movie was filmed here. If you remember it was Sophia Loren walking in the door and walking toward the men. Why is there no reference to this scene?

One of my favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities. This beef recipe has no equal. Great portions fantastic flavor. My favorite is the club special but the original roast beef cannot be overrated. They have a cook now that is really hitting his groove. Bloody Mary is great too!

Mayslack’s did not disappoint! When Jess was bringing “The Original”, I thought she was bringing another customer a stacked salad, nope, it was my STACKED ROAST BEEF SANDWICH. Jess took great care of. The fries were terrific. The wings were excellent. The ambience is perfect! We must return!

You haven't done Northeast Minneapolis if you've never been to Slacks!! Good food, good drinks, good people watching. The original roast beef sandwich is no joke! Epically large portion that is delicious and guaranteed to put you in a meat coma while you're still chewing! I love love love the tots. You don't "need" them but the crunch is a great accompaniment to any meal. ***Added tot onto the sandwich in picture for scale.*** Note: I do not recommend the breakfast tots. I may have needed to be hungover to enjoy it. In theory, it sounds delicious but wasn't in reality.

One of my favorite places to go for wings on Wednesday's but over the years the service has gotten "worse" but not necessarily bad overall. Fun place to grab drinks with friends for a great price.

Wow. Uh. So, we got one of the roast beef sandwiches, but they forgot to put it on bread so it wasn't actually a sandwich at all. The roast beef was tougher than jerky, dry as bone, and nearly flavorless. The jus dip it came with was awful, and tasted like powdered bouillon mix. I love pickles, but the pickles tasted off—like they had been sitting in warm salt water that has never seen a seasoning. The coleslaw was pure white and bland. I took a chance on the teriyaki bowl and found the sauce watery and bland, the chicken poorly seasoned and overcooked, and the broccoli weirdly sour and cooked so long it had turned grey. This is a place we're not going to try a second time on the chance this was an off day. The day was way too off.
