The 12 Hottest Restaurants in Charlotte, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Mazi is the latest addition to Built on Hospitality’s lineup, following Chief’s and Folia. At the helm is chef Whit Thomas, coming to Charlotte from Season 23 of Hell’s Kitchen. Her and executive chef Chris Coleman’s menu strays away from Coleman’s Southern classics and veers more toward Mediterranean small plates. Have fun with the food: Eat the lion’s mane mushroom shawarma by hand; suck the rich juice from the prawn heads; and spoon the toasty, golden-hued baklava sundae again and again. The menu is light, bright, and personal, somewhat contradictory to the dark charcoal walls and the clean-slate feel of the South End shopping plaza." - Kayleigh Ruller

Mazi delivers an exceptional brunch experience that's a significant step above typical brunch fare. The restaurant strikes the perfect balance with its sleek, understated elegance - sophisticated without being pretentious. The small plates concept is brilliant, allowing you to sample multiple dishes without overindulging. Every single item we tried was simply excellent - no weak spots on this menu. The service was outstanding throughout our visit. This is truly a 5-star experience that you owe to yourself. We're already planning our return visit to work our way through the rest of the menu. Highly recommended for anyone looking to elevate their brunch game.

We had such a nice time exploring the food at Mazi! The entire staff was welcoming! I believe every person working there spoke to us at some point. The manager interacted with all tables and our server, Germaine, was very attentive and knowledgeable about the food. He explained every dish to us. We tried a variety of items and enjoyed them all! We like unique menu items so this was the place for us! We started with the Black Walnut Muhammara, which was full of flavor and came with slightly toasted gooey bread. This bread was so amazing, we ordered more. Next we got the scallops, which came with a white sauce and they were very tasty and refreshing. We ordered Lion’s Mane Mushroom Shawarma which you pick up like a lettuce wrap to eat. This was very good and had a nice crunch to it. We also ordered the prawns (you can have them without the heads) which we enjoyed the most! The tuna was the last dish we ordered and that was very different than I expected. Probably because I’m used to uncooked or hardly cooked tuna. It did come with a white sauce and we asked the other male server there for more which he promptly brought to us. He deserves a shout-out because he was also helpful to us when walking by more than once. We ended with the sundae which is small but plenty for us and it had so much flavor! Parking: We ended up parking in the parking deck nearby. We went to P2 and parked in ‘Blue Area’ near the doors to the elevator (picture included). The doors to the elevator look like you need a keycard or code to access them but you don’t. We went right down, walked by Nikko Restaurant and back outside. We entered Mazi from the back door rather than walk all the way around. I think some people park in nearby lots and use the ParkMobile app. There were a couple handicap spaces by the back door of Mazi. When South Blvd is behind you and you’re facing Mazi from the road, the right side of the building is their back door and the parking deck. The left side is the main entrance and close to the Park Mobile parking lots. It did get loud inside but that’s a sign of a bustling restaurant and I was happy to see it packed on a Wednesday night!

This was our first time trying the restaurant after hearing great things, and we were excited to see they had recently started offering lunch. The dining room is absolutely beautiful — modern, warm, and inviting. However, we were the only guests dining during our entire visit, which gave the space a very quiet and low-energy atmosphere. We were warmly greeted by May, who was friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Lion’s Mane Mushroom Sandwich and the Lamb Kofta Grain Bowl. Despite being the only table in the restaurant, our food took about 30 minutes to arrive, which felt like an unusually long wait. When the food finally came out, both dishes were beautifully plated. The Lion’s Mane Mushroom Sandwich had great flavor, but the portion of mushrooms was quite small — especially at an $18 price point. The flatbread it was served on was also overly greasy, which distracted from the overall dish. The Lamb Kofta Bowl was visually stunning, but it arrived missing the roasted vegetables listed on the menu. About 10 minutes into our meal, we brought it up to May, who apologized and quickly had the kitchen send the vegetables out as a side. Once added, the bowl really came together and tasted great, though the kofta itself was slightly overcooked. Overall, we left with mixed feelings. There were bright spots, and we’d consider giving it another try, but our first experience fell a bit short of expectations.

Mazi is a newly opened gem in South End and after the amazing visit I had today, it deserves more love and attention than it received tonight. It's tucked away in a business park near Lincoln's Haberdashery but signage is good. There is parking in the lot of the u-shaped building, but may be all taken at busier hours if the day. Street parking is available on E. Bland. They have a huge bar and amazing bartenders. I enjoyed my drink. Pretty and tasty. There's lots of seating inside, at the bar, booth and tables. The menu has really good variety I enjoyed pretty much everything I tried. So fresh and so good. My fav were the dips. If you order the whipped feta or hummus you get an order of the amazing grilled bread. When I say it was good, I mean it. Plating was beautiful on every dish. I appreciate the effort that went into not only making the food taste good, but also making it look good. Our server was great - really patient and helpful. He gave great descriptions and recommendations of the menu. The chef came out to greet us, everyone really went out of their way to make it a great visit. What I appreciated most is that the prices are reasonable - Something that is becoming harder to find these days, but that allows you to really enjoy the meal and try various items. That's what I plan to come back and do. I hope they get more media attention because this place is really is amazing.

girls night out with 3 of my friends. Pleasant and friendly experience from the moment we walked in we were greeted by Eric and his staff. They were friendly , excited to have us there for our first visit. Our hostess Kevin was incredibly friendly. He offered to give us a sample of one of the cocktails, so we could try it before placing an order which was very nice of him. We ended up ordering our 3 drinks. Got a few things off the menu to try and I have to say the lamb was by far our favorite. We ordered it twice. The cast-iron shrimp was very average. It didn’t come in a cast-iron, which is what we were expecting that it would be sizzling hot and it tasted like it had just come out of packaging seasoned for a few seconds and just cooked - perhaps overcooked. It lacked the flavor and seasoning that we were hoping for. The appetizer walnut dip was delicious with the pita. It would be nice to see some more heavy veggie small plate items added to the menu that have some spice and flavor. All in all we had a very pleasant experience and will probably go back again.

Tucked in the corner of a small plaza on South Blvd, this beautiful gem is reminiscent of a speakeasy...quaint adorned with stylish dark decor, and cozy vibes. The menu selections seem appealing. The specialty-crafted drink selections are unique. The service was swift. The staff was polite. With that said, I'd like to highlight that my server Parker was the highlight of my visit. His charisma, professionalism, kindness, and help navigating the menu, led to us bonding over our transplant journeys as native New Yorkers. Now the food...While I wish I could offer a more positive review on the topic, I will add that the food was beautifully presented and the staff was graceful in removing the items I sent back from the bill. The octopus was overcooked and rubbery lacking a fresh taste. It seemed as if it were prepped beforehand then finished for serving. It lacked that snap on first bite followed by a tender juicy chew. It was also not served hot as expected for grilled octopus. Garnished with watermelon cubes topped with caviar and a balsamic glaze, the plate was beautiful. The prawns looked more like regular Gulf shrimp and were undercooked, nearly raw. They were garnished with a greasy slice of toast topped with sesame seeds and garlic confit. The bread that is served is a homemade flatbread drizzled with a sweet and salty butter with a taste similar to kettle corn. Perhaps breakfast or brunch is much better here. The food missed the mark greatly, however, the service and atmosphere are phenomenal.

Took the risk of visiting a few days after the restaurant opened, but no issues at all. Very smooth service and great atmosphere. Tried many of the small plates (yes, small) and although we preferred some more than others no misses at all. Plates come as the kitchen prepares them, but our server was able to ensure we received just a couple at a time, so we did not get 'table overload". As expected, a very interesting cocktail list and the wine list is moderately priced with a number of western (France, Spain, Italy) Mediterranean wines as well as wines from Greece and Lebanon (we needed some assistance with these, which we received, since we are not so familiar with them). Overall, a great experience, noise level grew during the evening but was never overpowering.

Such a beautiful interior with friendly service staff! Everyone including the server, bartender and manager were so friendly, bartender came over to our table and asked if they could come up with a drink based on what my friend ordered and gave a cool alternative with a story behind it. Food was so tasty and mocktails were perfect for a birthday celebration and will definitely be celebrating more things here

Yelp
My wife had been wanting to come here since it opened and we're so glad we did! We got the mezze plate, which came with several different tasty spreads and a grilled bread that was amazing. We also got the scallops, the braised beans, and the m'battan. The braised beans were a highlight - very hearty and garlicky. And the baklava sundae was awesome! Loved the toasted marshmallow on the outside and the honey yogurt gelato on the inside.

Yelp
I'm a little torn in how I felt about our meal here as I felt that some things worked better than others. I'll start by saying the service was SUPER friendly. Their recommendations weren't the most helpful, unfortunately. For example, they suggested we get the octopus which we were super interested in only to find out when we ordered it it was out (seeing as we were one of two tables there that night this couldn't have been because it ran out by the time we ordered it). A second example is offering to concoct an interesting cocktail they thought we may like that would be outside of the happy hour menu. When the happy hour menu turns every cocktail (including the ones that are as expensive as $18) into an $8 cocktail, this isn't so appealing. The mezze platter was ...fine. It only comes with two pieces of bread so inevitably you have to order more for $6 which is fine. I really didn't enjoy the honey on top of this as I found it to be difficult to eat (each bite makes your hands sticky). The dips themselves were pretty good and this was probably our favorite of the night. Falafel arancini were forgettable, as was the little gem salad. The shrimp dish could have been a bit more flavorful as I felt like the sauce was a little thin and meh, but the shrimp themselves were so so plump and the shrimp toast was actually quite delightful. We ordered a second dish of this but when they brought this out we were told they were out of shrimp toast- I feel that if this were the case either they should've stopped serving this dish or not charged full price as the shrimp toast is half the dish. We opted for the $65 steak at the recommendation of the waiter and it was a pretty solid piece of steak- I enjoyed the seasoning and the slight char. However, I don't feel that it warrants a $65 price tag- one could easily get this steak elsewhere for a max of $50. Finally, the baklava was interesting and had a marshmellow-ey whipped topping with some crunch at the bottom but if I hadn't been told this was meant to be inspired by baklava I don't know that I would have gotten this. The cocktail menu has a bunch of interesting things and again they were $8 each when we went, which was definitely an attractive aspect of the meal. I think this place has a lot of potential and could be a solid option but may still have some growing pains in terms of the flow of the menu and the way in which it presents its identity.

Yelp
Had a really nice chill brunch here. It's a beautiful restaurant esthetically . Great decor. Nice bar area. Also a little patio seating in the working lot area. It's a super small parking lot but they offer validated free 2 hour parking in the lot behind them. We decided to sit outside but it was sunny and no shade! We had the option to go in though if it got hot as it wasn't really busy. We started with drinks ! Brunch cocktails! They have a pretty extensive list and wine and beer. I had the bitter behavior, nice but a little weaker than I anticipated. My friends had the violet hour, pretty lavender drink. Also the breakfast bramble, an interesting drink with a mix of interesting ingredients including Greek yogurt. Was different! Food wise we had avocado toast, which was so pretty and also full of other toppings ! Greens, tomatoes, onions and radish. Nice and fresh. I had the Turkish eggs with labneh, poached eggs and chili crunch and served with whole grain toast. This was nice and light and the chili crunch gave it a nice kick. The baklava soufflé pancakes are for the sweet eaters. Plenty going on on that plate. It looked amazing . I didn't try as I'm not a baklava lover but heard it was good and sweet with all the flavors. A filling plate for sure. Good for sharing. Our sever was super nice although I found the service a tad bit slow for a Sunday brunch when the place isn't that busy. But it was a great place and a nice experience. Nice bathrooms too! For your Mediterranean food lovers.

Yelp
Mazi is amazing! The executive chef and owner is Chef Whitney Thomas who was one of the final four finalists of Season 23 of Hell's Kitchen. Located in South End. Their is complimentary parking in the parking lot behind the restaurant where you scan the QR code at the hostess station and just enter your license plate number. The staff is super helpful. They tell you what dishes to pair with what and what order to eat them in so you can truly savor all the flavors. This is a Mediterranean restaurant that offers shared plates, curated cocktails, and desserts. The ambience is upscale and moody. Highly recommend if you are looking for some place new to try and want to explore bold rich flavors.

Yelp
Went for restaurant week so they had a set menu. Everything we had was delicious. Cocktails were not too sweet and well balanced and the service was great. Although the pork chop with grits was slightly overcooked it was still good and that's saying something. Highly recommended.

Yelp
In my experience, it's not often that you try a new restaurant on Tuesday, then go on to crave it each day that follows. Yet, Mazi will easily have you doing just that. Beautiful interior that visibly transports you to a tropical locale. Friendly, attentive, & knowledgeable service that starts at the front door and continues at all touch points throughout your visit. One of the BEST bartenders that I've had the pleasure of meeting & sampling libations from. A menu that will have the phrase "I'll have one of each" repeatedly flashing in your mind, lol. Thankfully, I was out with an excellent foodie friend--which means we came quite close to having one of each. We enjoyed a delightful lineup of scallops--not what I expected, but exponentially better!--lion's mane schwarma, hummus, shrimp, tuna kofta, lamb shank, and the IG-famous baklava sundae. With each dish seemingly more visually impressive, delightful to all the senses, & DELICIOUS--the layers of FLAVOR that Chef Whitney & her squad can fit into a dish never ceases to amaze me--it was hard to declare a clear favorite. All I can say is the shrimp, lamb shank, & baklava are must-haves for me. All of this plus a complimentary shot at the end of the night of a craft concoction featuring house-made orangecello?!!! I am already beyond ready for my next visit! Pro Tip: 1 round of bread will never be enough for your hummus--get extra for dipping...into everything. Cheers!

Yelp
Two weeks in business, and we're already fans of this place! To those who say "customer service is dead" need visit Mazi. Celebrating our anniversary, we received a card signed by 20+ staff members, and not less than eight people came by to wish us well. Our server was on point, and all who came to support the meal were friendly, engaging, and had our best experience in mind. The fired bread (similar to naan) is a great deal (though a touch too much olive oil), and we highly recommend pairing it with the whipped feta and olives. The scallops were our #1 or #2, and the chill matched well with the flavors brought forth through the drizzle and other elements. Kudos to the carrot salad, as well. The next three options were good, though not in the killer category. The M'Battan was new for both of us and, though it was beef stuffed potato, seemed to be miss the flavor or texture of either. The Lion's Mane Mushroom Sharma seems to be their special offering, and it comes as two tacos on a flat of collard green. My wife said, "I'm so glad I took the first bite, so I could truly enjoy the second... but I'm not sure I want a third." Lastly, neither of us will rave about the prawns as they lacked flavor, which was unexpected given it appeared they'd been cooked in spices. We'll be back, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the menu progresses. The bones of the restaurant seem to be well in place, and we wish them great success and making people happy through great meals and experiences!

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing! We came last week for a special dinner tasting menu. It was one of our favorite experiences so far. Each entree/dish was extremely inventive. The flavors Chef Whitney used all compliment each other so well. It was nice to experience such unique cuisine in Charlotte. The ambience and vibe is fresh and the entire staff was super friendly. We then decided to come back later in the week to try their brunch menu. We were not disappointed! We tried the Turkish eggs, lamb hash, baklava souflee pancakes and grits. We ended up taking some home, but we had to try each of these unique dishes. Everything was creative & inventive yet again. We hope this restaurant survives due to its location. Highly recommend- you won't be disappointed unless you just prefer bland food :)

Yelp
Let me start by saying the service was great. We sat at the bar and Davis took good care of us. The food and portion sizes however, were not great. Fattoush Salad - calling this a Fattoush is like calling Welch's grape juice a Bordeaux. Half a head of lettuce with some tomatoes from Harris teeter and dressing that tasted like Kraft French dressing. What about this is a fattoush, the pita chips? It tasted like a salad you'd get on the side at Dennys. Octopus - great flavor, but miniscule portion of octopus. Like 3 decent sized bites Lamb Kofta - flavors were fine but way overcooked. We thought maybe it was because of Queens Feast and we should've ordered that.. until we saw the woman next to us with her 4 peach slices appetizer and 3-bite piece of flounder... unless her dessert came with a $20 bill on the plate, charging $50 for that is highway robbery. We wanted to love this place! But it's just really not great. We ended our night at ever andalo ordering a pasta and wine for "dessert," and you should too.

Yelp
Really cute new restaurant with delicious food all around. The highlight was definitely the grilled bread. The service was a bit slow and a couple of our orders were forgotten, the staff apologized and did acknowledge having a large party they were attending to. I would go back

Yelp
Came here for a birthday dinner last night and it was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time. The menu strikes a great balance between well-executed Levantine classics & more modernized dishes that blend things from different Mediterranean cuisines. The muhammara and the tahini mousse were insanely good. The manager Ashleigh and the rest of the team went above and beyond to make the birthday feel like a special occasion. They even had a little handwritten "happy birthday" note at the table for us when we arrived, since I mentioned that in the reservation. The vibes are intimate and upscale but not pretentious at all. Impeccable service and food at a very reasonable price!

Nancy J.

Yelp
Incredible brunch experience-- the freekeh porridge, Turkish eggs, and grits were all delicious. Really good Bloody Mary. Excellent and friendly service. We will definitely be back!

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Amazing experience. Food was delicious and service was great. Loved the whipped feta with warm bread and the had the m'batten was the perfect blend of light and crispy potato with tender beef. We also enjoyed the falafel -cini and prawns. Wish we had saved room for dessert because they looked so yummy

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Excellent food with a great vibe! Bartender was the best! Looking forward to going back!

Yelp
We had a 7:30 dinner reservation last Friday. We weren't seated until after 8:30, they were apologetic and comped a round of drinks. Unfortunately, that's just where the terrible service began. Drinks and apps took far too long, and we had to remind the staff multiple times what was ordered. When we tried to order espresso martinis for the table, a waiter told us "they dont recommend that cocktail until after dinner, I'm assuming in an attempt to give the bartender some time (just say the bar is backed up?) Next, the waiter spilled one of the espresso martinis (which tasted only of kahlua and baileys) on the table / us and didnt apologize or replace the drink. I rarely write reviews but this was truly one of the worst dining experiences I've had. Finally, none of the food was satisfactory. We ended up paying $65 each and left sober and hungry.

Michael H.

Yelp
1 of a kind experience, you could only leave with a smile. Great service great food, a hidden gem for sure.

Mitchell Y.

Yelp
Mazi was phenomenal! The menu is a perfectly balanced selection of dishes from across the Mediterranean. Of the 5 dishes we had, every single one was spectacular. The muhammara is an absolute must! The cocktails were exquisite, and the staff and service were top notch. Can't wait to come back!

Adriane B.

Yelp
Amazing food in a wonderful atmosphere! waiter was so nice! Really enjoyed the whipped feta and hummus and warm pita!
