A 98-Year-Old Ice Cream Shop From Chicago Is Opening in Southern California - Eater LA

"McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams has collaborated with See’s Candies to create four new flavors: Vanilla with California Brittle, salt-roasted almonds, and chocolate ganache ribbons; Coffee with Molasses Chips; Chocolate with Polar Bear Paws; and Banana Cream with Toffee-ettes. These flavors are available at all McConnell’s locations or can be ordered online for nationwide shipping." - Cathy Chaplin

On the Grid : McConnell's Ice Cream

"McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams was founded in Santa Barbara in 1949. Almost 70 years later, they are still making their ice creams in small batches, from scratch, with Central Coast, grass-grazed milk & cream that they pasteurize from raw at their creamery, which is located at The Old Dairy. In addition, they source all other ingredients from local partner farms, artisans, and purveyors. The end result is a rich, perfectly creamy ice cream with all sorts of exciting flavors, such as Sea Salt Cream and Cookies, Eureka Lemon and Marionberries, Toasted Coconut Almond Chip, with more being introduced seasonally. Check out their newest location on State Street, and order yourself something fancy like the La Tortuga or Breakfast of Champions." - Amanda Proudfit

McConnell’s Review - Santa Barbara - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"If you’re a human who hangs out in the frozen foods aisle, you’ve no doubt heard of McConnell’s and might even be eating a pint of their double peanut butter chip as you read this. It’s some of the best ice cream on the West Coast, and a Santa Barbara original. Though the McConnell’s ice cream empire is far-reaching these days, paying homage to its State Street store is a worthy pilgrimage for anyone who enjoys the creamier things in life." - Brant Cox

Google
Great, friendly service! They let you try different flavors and don’t make you feel embarrassed by trying g many. 🤣 The ice cream flavors are varied and so tasty. The Whiskey, pecan flavor is fab!! I love that they use the best ingredients. You won’t go wrong getting any flavor here. It’s the best ingredients SB.

Google
We went here for our afternoon snacks and ordered Small 2 flavors, I think chocolate and something with caramel and the other Double with mint, and I'm not sure about the other flavor. Total: $20.64 with tips We must say that McConnell's might be the best ice cream we have tried. It has not-too-sweet flavors and some flavors that we don't mind trying. Overall, we are happy we tried and satisfied our sweet cravings.

Google
This was a yummy sweet treat! They have some unique flavors and I love that you can get 1 scoop and split the flavors in half. The cookie dough flavor was surprisingly unconventional and delicious!

Google
This is supposed to be the best ice cream in USA.m, well, if not the best it’s very close to it. The ice cream wasn’t too sweet and it did taste more like homemade. I had the waffle cone with scoop Eureka Lemon and Santa Barbara strawberry which was delicious. We were told there was always a long line. This is 95% true because when we returned at 8:30pm there wasn’t a line. But the service is super fast. As we sat to eat our ice cream the line grew longer. My friend had chocolate and strawberry and my goddaughter had a shake. There is a small sitting area. The total bill was $28 for 2 waffle cones with 2 scoops ice cream each and shake. It’s much better than the ice cream I had in Philadelphia.

Google
I went to this ice cream shop close to the beach, and I had a fantastic experience. The shop is clean and tidy, providing a pleasant atmosphere for enjoying a sweet treat. They offer a great selection of refreshing ice cream, with flavors that are absolutely delicious. The staff is nice and welcoming, which adds to the overall positive experience. Unlike the busier downtown location, this shop is conveniently closer to the beach and nearby hotels, making it a perfect stop for a cool treat after a day in the sun. The ice cream here is sooo good that it's definitely worth the visit. I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

Google
Kinda reminded us of Salt & Straw back home but without the innovative flavors. There are definitely uncommon flavors but they felt safe if you know what I mean. However, everything tasted great. Highly recommend the flight and free sampling haha.

Google
I think they have one of the best ice creams in USA. We tried custom sundae, the scoops were small but the flavors chocolate chocolate and sales cookie and cream were amazing!

Google
OMG! I have been eating the ice cream from whole foods and finally got to have some at a real store. I think it taste better at the store than the ones from while foods. Good service and staff was nice. No restrooms at this location tho.

Yelp
i don't even need to review this place lwk because it has amazing reputation already LOL but literally every flavor they offer is good. staff is always friendly and you can ask them to sample flavors if you'd like. last time i went i just blind bought the seasonal pumpkin spice latte flavor and it was so gas Please get it if you go while they offer it. it has little swirls of caramel and it's perfectly balanced and not Too sweet. also got the eureka lemon and marionberry one which always hits if you're feeling fruity. got it on their waffle bowl which was nice and crisp too i literally never leave this place upset idk what more to tell u

Yelp
LOCATION: State St/E De La Guerra St PARKING: Street parking WHAT WE ORDERED: * Double scoop (can get up to 4 flavors) ($9.50) A popular ice cream shop for a good reason! McConnell's has a variety of flavors to sample from, making it difficult to narrow down which flavors to order. The texture of the flavor is perfect. This is the spot if you like your ice cream with chunks of toppings infused. I didn't have the best service here. The girl helping us out looked like she hated her job lol. She was pretty soft-spoken, and my friends and I had a hard time hearing her. This took away from the experience, but it wasn't that big of a deal at the end of the day.

Yelp
Yum yum in my tum tum! We stopped here for a small scoop and it was so fun! We chatted with the employees about the time Katy Perry came in to try her ice cream and their favorite things about Santa Barbara. So friendly! The ice cream was delicious too. The Santa Barbara strawberry was a hit. Thanks so much!
google avatar

Yelp
Pros: great for gluten free. They have gluten free waffle cones kept in a separate area, do a glove change and a fresh scoop of ice cream from the back. Lots of gf flavor options. I felt really safe eating here as a person with celiac disease. Cons: ice cream was just ok, honestly. I don't really get what the hype was about. I had the Santa Barbara Strawberry. Also, the lady cashier had a huge attitude, which seems to be a pattern based on other reviews. It really contrasted with how friendly her male coworker was. Not a great look for such a major tourist spot and made my ordering experiencing really uncomfortable especially since I had to ask questions about the cross contamination procedures.

Yelp
Tried and loved a lot of their flavors but decided on the mango sorbet which was a perfect sweet treat after all the foodie adventures I had that day. I liked that their mango flavor tasted like blended mangoes and not the artificial preservative mango flavor. The service was quick and we got to try multiple flavors before deciding. The ambiance is modern but also nostalgic. If I'm in the area, will be by to try more.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing ice cream and great service! I tried a couple flavors which were all delicious. The small size is a generous size and it's nice they let you choose two flavors. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Passed by this place while strolling around SB with my family and decided to give it a try since it's the flagship location. I tried the earl grey and apple cider flavors - the apple cider flavor was especially refreshing while the earl grey flavor had a nice floral flavor that combined well with the shortbread. We ultimately decided to share a cookies n cream and earl grey split scoop and the combo worked well! I'd love to come back and try more seasonal flavors in the future.

Yelp
This ice cream chain surpassed my expectations! The salted caramel brownie ice cream was exceptional. Creamy and velvety with the perfect sweet and salty balance from the caramel. Im so happy theres a McConells Ice Cream in Carlsbad because I cant wait to try other flavors.

Yelp

Yelp
Delicious Ice Cream!!! This visit to McConnell's was so fun! The staff member there was the sweetest. She told fun stories, was personable, and really customized the experience! I loved the flavors of each of the ice creams we got and loved the waffle bowl too. My favorite flavors were EUREKA LEMON & MARIONBERRIES and EARL GREY TEA & SHORTBREAD COOKIES.
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
Not bad, be prepared for long lines for all 3 locations! The ice cream on a fresh crisp waffle cone was delicious. This one was the shortest line, and we were able to score parking nearby. The restroom in this area was really hard to find though as all signs point to one place on the second floor by CPK, Eureka, and Panda.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
This place has some great selections and quality ice creams. I chose the strawberry covered chocolate and chocolate polar bear paws (basically it's like chocolate with peanut butter in it) on a waffle cone. Both flavors were so delicious and I'll definitely get it again. The service was friendly and the place was clean.

Yelp
Never got McConnell's before despite coming to SB for 20 years. Always seemed loaded with tourists and that's not my thing. However on my most recent trip, after an excellent but spicy dinner, I finally said what the hell. The line of tourists didn't disappoint. I'm not in fantastic shape by any means, however there was a steady trend of the more balloon-shaped people tasting every damned flavor they had. I mean, it's nice it's freshly made, however have you never had freaking ice cream before? Just buy a big tub and move the hell on. The staff here needs a raise for dealing with this crap. Finally got a small cup and went with sea salt cream and cookies, as well as coffee. Never had the first one before and it was a definitely winner. I would've gotten that by itself and been happy. The coffee was well done however it detracted by the first flavor as it melted. That was my bad and nobody else's. Ok, so this is a worth a stop. It's a chain but good quality stuff at an ok price. You can do much worse on State St.

Yelp
Ice cream was fire! I've had the marionberry ice cream here before so I already knew it was delicious, but I tried the honey and cornbread flavor and it has to be one of the best ice creams I have ever had. It sounds like a weird combo but I works so perfectly. My cone was a bit expensive at like $8 but I definitely got what I paid for. They definitely live up to the "fine ice creams" title. Service was also great. The servers and cashier were very nice and helpful and they all worked at a good pace to keep the line moving. The parlor is in the middle of downtown SB so it's a great place to be in. Inside they also have a great looking place with some upstairs seating. Definitely check this place out if you're in town. 100% worth getting the cornbread ice cream

Yelp
Arrived here after dinner a little over 30 mins prior to closing and no employee to be found. It was me and the hubbys first time here so we were looking over the menu. After a couple of minutes a disheveled girl comes out, ignoring the fact we had been standing there, no greeting or acknowledgement. Finally she asks "are you ready?" very rudely. We felt rushed and definitely an inconvenience to her for being there half an hour before closing time, although there was no one else there. Took away from the experience. Got two scoops which consisted of cookies and cream and brittle. Ice cream was okay, nothing to brag home about and the lack of stars came from the horrible service!
google avatar

Kris H.

Yelp
Stopped by here for some dessert after dinner! My friends who attended UCSB recommended this spot as their go-to ice cream shop when they were in SB. I got the double scoop cup (allows you to choose 1-4 different flavors). I ordered the earl grey & shortbread, eureka lemon & Marion berries, and honey & cornbread (a seasonal item). I wouldn't say it woo-ed me off my foot, but it was a solid ice cream treat! The flavors were interesting and fun to have. When I came by, the line wasn't too long. However after I got my ice cream, the line went out the door. The inside could get pretty crowded and loud with people waiting in line.
google avatar

Christie N.

Yelp
Great quality ice cream made with the right way, with minimal ingredients. They are a Santa Barbara based family owned business with their own dairy! They make their own ice cream and ingredients are either theirs or hand made local ingredients. You can sure taste the difference! We got Singles in a Cup. You can choose 1 or 2 flavors and you get two scoops. A perfect sweet treat!

Marina S.

Yelp
A big disappointment yesterday after purchasing " blue raspberry " flavored ice cream in the cone... my son was enjoying it until.. he pulled out a long dark hair from the ice cream (!) we are locals and hoping management will read this review and do something about quality control. From now on will shop somewhere else
google avatar

Yelp
I'd heard great things about this ice cream shop and they did not lie! So many fun and tasty flavors to choose from, which they were happy to let me try. I was very happy to see they offered reusable metal spoons instead of disposable wooden sticks or plastic spoons like most spots. There were a few spots to eat inside, but it's in a great location right on the main walkway of the downtown area, so I sat outside on a bench facing the bike road instead to people watch. Great spot!
google avatar

Sharon C.

Yelp
Came after dinner on a weeknight and it was not busy at all, lucky me. Service was great, I got to taste a bunch of different flavors. Everything was creamy and thicc, the way I love my ice cream. The guy explained they have one of the lowest ratio of air to cream, making it a dense explosion of taste in your mouth. Ended up getting the sea salt with cookies and the churros con leche. Wish I had stomach space to also get the earl grey with shortbread. Next time.

Yelp
Best ice cream in SoCal. Best coffee flavor I've ever had. Really creative without being obnoxious
google avatar

Yelp
I tried McConnell's for the first time on Sun, 3/12/2023 at around 1:30 PM. I think we got lucky since there wasn't anyone else in the store so we didn't have to wait at all for our ice cream. I ended up getting a "Single" 1 scoop w/ two flavors: coffee + Garrison Bros Whiskey & Pecan Pralines with Sugar Cone $6.25 - The coffee flavor was strong and I enjoyed that one. The Garrison Bros Whiskey & Pecan Pralines was particularly sweet. The sweetness was a little much (the kind that chokes your throat a little). I'm curious to try the other flavors. Maybe next time I venture back out to SB!
google avatar

Yelp
So delicious! Will stop here every time for sure when I'm in town. Fresh, innovative flavors.
google avatar

Carmen L.

Yelp
We enjoyed our ice cream and milk shake. They had different kinds of ice cream with seasonal and no dairy as well. They also offer tasting...so make sure to try before buying it.

Lesley F.

Yelp
McConnell's is simply the best. Their ice cream is divine, the flavors are plentiful and the portions generous. The service is always good.
google avatar

Shaheen N.

Yelp
This ice cream shop is fantastic. Not only does it have a cool upper loft, seating area, but it's some of the best ice cream I've had in a long time. Service was also top-notch. As a first time visitor, I really appreciated the recommendations and help . The serving size was satisfactory , but let me tell you about the taste! Phenomenal smooth & icy, ice cream. The texture is unique and enjoyable. I got three flavors, including churro con Leche and salted caramel brownie. My wife got the Oreo, cookies and cream and it's honestly one of the best cookies and cream I've ever tried.
google avatar

Angie N.

Yelp
Hands down the best mango sorbet and chocolate chocolate chocolate ice cream! There was a line that formed when my family was here, but we didn't wait long because the service was quick. I can see why people wait in line for ice cream at McConnell-- the ice cream is flavorful without being overly sweet. The mango sorbet does not taste icy like how sorbet typically taste; it had more of a creamy texture to it. The chocolate ice cream had little chunks of chocolate pieces in it. It was so good! I'm definitely coming back to try other flavors!
google avatar

Wesley C.

Yelp
Cute little ice cream shop on state street, in the heart of Santa Barbara. The garrison whisky and praline was great, as you definitely get a hint of whiskey from the flavor profile. The chocolate chocolate chocolate was VERY chocolaty...lol, based off its name. This ice cream company originated in Santa Barbara in 1949...and is a must stop for the ice cream lover! Service was quick and pleasant. There's limited seating upstairs, so get there during off peak.
google avatar

Nicky C.

Yelp
McConnell's was highly recommended and is one of my nieces favorite ice creamery in SB. While visiting town I had to try it for myself. Who doesn't love ice cream? Right. Once you step inside you can smell the freshly warm made waffle cones. It just hits you right in the nose. You know it's a legit ice cream store. All the flavors were unique and too many to choose from. I went with 3 scoops in a waffle cone cup Strawberry, salted caramel cookie and I forgot the last flavor (bf pick). The line is long, but moves quickly. Would come back to grab a scoop or two in the near future.
google avatar

Manushi Manish S.

Yelp
This is one of the most popular ice cream spots in Santa Barbara, and its prime location certainly adds to its appeal. However, I find it a bit overhyped. I tried the Chocolate covered strawberry and Sweet Cream Caramel brownie flavors. While the texture was light and the taste was pleasant, it didn't quite live up to the high expectations. It's good, but not the best ice cream I've had. Their best seller is chocolate chocolate chocolate which wasn't available at this location but I would definitely would like visit a branch where this flavor is available. That said, the vibrant atmosphere and friendly staff make it worth a visit, especially if you're in the area and craving a sweet treat.
google avatar

Tracy B.

Yelp
It was 98 degrees outside and I was trying to buy a simple ice Cream cone was Told to wait outside. so I left. incidentally, Yelp Removed this review One time.
google avatar

Raquel O.

Yelp
Such a cute little ice cream spot. Anytime we've come up we forget about dessert. This time I didn't let that happen. We had heard so many good things we are glad we finally tried it. My husband loves anything and everything marionberry so he was excited to see their Eureka Lemon and Marionberry flavor. He sampled it and got it right away. I love sorbets. I was excited to get their mango sorbet. So good not to sweet which was nice. Not a surprise but our little one loved the flavors too. We will be coming back more often now.
google avatar

Chester C.

Yelp
One of my stable when in SB. Flavors always changing and consistency is always there. They introduce new items each time I visit. Good place to stop by on State St. when you're in downtown.
google avatar

Casey W.

Yelp
Soon amazingly fresh! Loved the area where the store is located. You can easily walk around and enjoy your icecream. I got the salted cookie and cream and the cookie were so fresh in it that it tasted like they just were made today and crumbled into the icecream. I will definitely be back. I just wish the portions were a little bigger, so if you like icecream I would go with a double scoop!
google avatar

Marisa F.

Yelp
The best ice cream. Came from rancho Cucamonga to Santa Barbara. We have to make a long line, but it worth it!! The strawberry ice cream is perfect!
google avatar

Maya H.

Yelp
Came here on a beautiful beach day and had to get some ice cream. The menu is huge!!! Flavors are really good and the staff is nice. We I love how close they are to the beach. After we got our ice cream we enjoyed it as we watched the sunset, truly amazing experience.
google avatar

Stefanie D.

Yelp
Ordered the sea salt cream and cookies and a scoop of salted caramel brownie. Both flavors complemented each other really well. I liked the bits of cookie and brownie spread throughout the ice cream, and the saltiness from the sea salt cream really enhanced the sweetness of both flavors. The ice cream was perfectly creamy and airy. Would definitely return if I were in the area!
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
One of the best locally made ice cream shops! You can't miss it as you roam State Street. They offer a variety of unique flavors and a few non dairy options. Super friendly service too! There were 3 non dairy options at the time and I asked the guy which were good, he gave me his honest opinion (the choc fudge cookie cookie is the best!) and offered me a non dairy cone option. Sampling ice cream flavors are encouraged! They want to make sure you enjoy your choices. Wish they had a fruity non dairy option at my visit though. I ordered the chocolate fudge cookie and vanilla bean. I've never been a huge choc ice cream lover, but this got me sold. Rest of my fam ordered the coffee, coconut almond chip, banana salted caramel, and lemon Marion berry flavors. All good! They raved about it the entire day lol Another plus here, with a single scoop, you have the option of getting two flavors !
google avatar

Catherine L.

Yelp
I love Mcconnells! My boyfriend and I always always stop by when we're in Santa Barbara. Homemade ice cream is always the best and so much better with people you love. There's always a long line, but for good reason. If you time it correctly and wait for peak hour/rush hour to be over, the wait won't be long. It's absolutely worth the long wait even during those summer days. They also do sell pints in their freezers so you can always get a pint to bring home. I love to get their ice cream with the waffle ice cream. Their prices for their ice cream is super reasonable and esp with the amount they give. I've learned that I'm getting too old to have more than once scoop Every time I've been here over the years, the staff has always been so friendly and allowed me to try flavors as well to see what I like to go with. I wish they'd sell their pints in San Diego or open a location here! I'd def be there all the time
google avatar

Jasmine Z.

Yelp
No trip to SB is complete without a stop at McConnell's! They have some of the best flavors out there, and today the earl grey is what spoke to me. I love how you can get two flavors in a small. Premium, high quality ice cream that deserves to be tried if you're on State St!
google avatar

Nevin A.

Yelp
McConnell'c ice cream has very youthful and  vibrant decor. It was founded in 1949 in Santa Barbara. The employees are also young, cheerful and very attentive. They offered us many samples to try different flavors. All the flavors were exceptional. They told us that everything was made from the scratch. For my daughter and I, we chose Earl grey tea & shortbread cookies and Eureka lemon and marion berries. My husband chose Mango sorbet and strawberry. Their ice cream was rich creamy  and has unique flavors
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Best ice cream in SB! Their Earl grey tea and shortbread is one of my favorite ice cream flavors. Eureka Lemon & Marionberries is a good option for a tart one.
google avatar

Tifanie S.

Yelp
Oh my!!! I love some good ice cream. It was my first time here and the ice cream was amazing. The place smelled so good. They also had great service. I tasted about 6 different flavors and they were all good.
google avatar

Yelp
Good variety of ice cream flavors! Great location in downtown SB. Easy spot to hit-up on a warm day. And they have dairy-free options, which is a plus for my lactose-intolerant husband. If ever in town again, would stop by again!

Tim R.

Yelp
IF YOU ARE LACTOSE INTOLERANT OR HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES, PLEASE READ: Normally I would write amazing things about McConnells as I spent many years in the past living in SB, and the ice cream is amazing. HOWEVER... I am traveling back to SB this weekend for my girlfriend's birthday. She is lactose intolerant (with an almond allergy as well) and upon seeing the dairy free options on the menu, we decided to pop in and get a scoop for the both of us since she had options here. We asked about what was used to make the dairy free ice cream, as almond milk would've been a dealbreaker for her getting to try it. We were told it did not use almond milk, but instead oat milk, which was good... So we ordered her a scoop of the dairy-free cookies and cream... She was given the regular cookies and cream ice cream and is now feeling absolutely miserable in our airbnb. So upon asking about dairy free ice cream, verifying ingredients for a separate allergy, and ordering specifically for dairy free cookies and cream, we were served regular cookies and cream. I don't understand how much more clear we need to be when ordering. This is pure neglect, ignorance, and the utmost pinnacle of human imperfection in the service industry. To the workers: If someone makes it absolutely clear and is inquiring about dairy free options, mentioning allergies, you need to figure it out and not make such a clumsy mistake. If this were the case of a severe peanut allergy (or any other fatal allergy/food intolerance) this could be a fatal mistake for a customer. Pay attention as you will kill your customers with this level of ignorance.

Yelp
Located in downtown SB. Street or metered parking. Cute little ice cream shop with upstairs seating. There's an array of ice cream choices. Sugar, waffle cone or waffle bowls are options. You can also order ice ccookie

Yelp
Ice cream was great, it was my first time and i did not regret it. Definitely coming back

Yelp
Food favorites: mint chocolate chip and earl grey, although all flavors are so great!! Service: friendly and welcoming! Vibes: beach town ice cream spot

Yelp
Had the Santa Barbara strawberry, and it was delicious! We went on a Saturday night in July around 9PM and it wasn't crowded when we got there, but the line was out the door by the time we left.
