Why Lack of Child Care Is Still a Problem for Restaurant Workers | Eater

"A small Anderson, South Carolina pub that converted an underused private dining room into an on-site childcare space during pandemic reopenings, outfitting it cheaply with toys, beanbag chairs, changing tables and paid babysitters. The arrangement, inspected and approved with limits (eight children per sitter per shift and under four hours per child), costs the owner about $300 to set up and roughly $15/hour plus meals to operate; staff agree to fill in when sitters are unavailable. The solution reduced turnover dramatically for this business and eliminated a second commute for employees, though it hasn’t yet been tested with children who have special needs." - Corey Mintz

Came in on a Sunday around 4:45 pm. First thing to note is they don’t currently have a liquor license so liquor is off the table but they are serving wine and beer. The first port wine I asked for they were out of but after that everything went amazingly. Ian was our waiter, incredibly attentive and anything he didn’t have an answer for he was clear and honest about and went to get a second opinion. My girlfriend ordered an espresso crème Brûlée which was to die for with fresh fruit and chocolate covered espresso beans as a garnish. I asked for whatever port wine the bartender recommended and she brought over a honey forward light orange red Australian port. GORGEOUS. Very sweet very deep very delicious. Ordered the pimento cheese fondue and the Irish stew. The fondue was tasty (but of course it was its melted pimento cheese) and the crostini it came with while tasty did have a slight edge towards stale. The stew? My god. The mash was fine but the actual stew itself of just herb lamb shank was one of the single tastiest things I’ve had this year. Warm, seasoned, and perfectly delightful without coming off as pretentious. Had one last Portugal port wine which was darker in color but lush and exactly what I’m looking for in a port wine. Came in with low expectations as the drink crisis came into play but everything was stunning and delicious! Once last shoutout to our waiter Ian who gave us exceptional service.

Google
If you seek an authentic, traditional Scottish-Irish pub, I highly recommend giving this one a try. Every dish and drink I've sampled since 2013 has been delightful. While the crème brûlée is my personal favorite, their menu offers a wide variety, including pizza, fish and chips, and a superb French onion soup. They also feature numerous food and drink specials throughout the week, and the live music is a wonderful bonus. I believe you'll be very pleased with your visit.

Google
Very good food 😊 down here for a softball tournament and checked this place out and it was so worth it. Great food and atmosphere. Staff were very nice. A+++ food and service 👍👏🏻😊

Google
Best Shepherd Pie that I've ever had. The chicken livers were great. Best desserts too.

This Irish Pub Located in the middle of Downtown Anderson, is the perfect place to stop by for a bite or a pint! The atmosphere is great! I love that they played Celtic music there, that’s something that more Irish pubs should do. The staff was excellent and the food was great. I went around brunch and had the eggs Benedict. Definitely stop by if you’re passing through. Great little spot!

Google
It was a pleasure eating there. Cute pub, great music, wonderful atmosphere. Loved the staff and the food was fantastic. Had a hard time choosing what to order. Which means I will have to come back to go down the menu. The Baileys Creme Brulee was so damn good! I didn't want to share. I will definitely be there the next time I come through Anderson.

Google
Absolutely amazing experience. That food was tremendous and really hit the spot, the server went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed ourselves and had a great meal.

Google
Our first time here and it was so good! I was expecting like standard bar/pub food but I was amazed at the flavor profiles in the food. Really really good. The curried coleslaw was so unique but and it was addicting! Our server Emma was so sweet! We came on a Friday night so there was live music which was so fun! I can’t believe we have missed out on this place all these years! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
This Irish Pub located around downtown Anderson is easy to walk or drive. Day before St Patrick's Day 2025, they had to save corned beef for then, so no Reuben available. Of course had to order one Guinness, fish & chips to-go, and tried the Scottish porridge. Porridge was nutty tasting and filled me up, also w side of grits or potatoes. My friend ordered breakfast pizza that has grits & eggs cooked into thin crust, she enjoyed it. My wife ate fish & chips later, she said it was heavy battered, the side of curried coleslaw is an acquired taste is what we determined. This is a perfectly fine Irish pub, our waitress Clemence was a jewel, sample a few different dishes until find your favorite. There is a small stage for live music, outdoor seating, stairs lead up not sure if this for public overflow or employee only.

Yelp
The star of the show was our server Jake! Even if the food didn't live up to our expectations (it did) he was awesome! For our appetizer, per Jake's recommendation, we ordered the Fried Cajun Shrimp Cocktail. He was not wrong! The battered shrimp with cocktail sauce and Cajun remoulade was a perfect starter with loads of flavor! For lunch I chose the Shepard's Pie, perfect for this cold snap we're experiencing. I'd been craving Shepard's Pie (and considered cooking my own soon) this hit the spot! The hubby was struggling to choose between the Lamb Stew or Fish & Chips and ultimately went with the latter (I was hoping the former) but the fish was perfectly battered and the fries are the ones that seem double fried(?) not sure how to explain but they are crispy with a bit of fluff to them, perfect and perfectly seasoned. I couldn't resist helping him eat his meal too both our lunch choices were wonderful! I would order either/both again but I want to try some other options from their menu that I was torn on. Great lunch! Great service! Great atmosphere! 5 stars for McGee's for sure!

Yelp
My husband and I have been here twice and both times it was great. Warm pub atmosphere, really good food and friendly attentive staff. Bangers and mash are delicious!

Yelp
Cons: Food was unimpressive. I ordered a burger, the patty didn't taste like it had any seasoning. A salad was ordered that looked. good. Shrimp and fries plate was also not impressive. The server seemed new and kept having to go "ask" the questions we asked about the food, plus no smile. Pros: easy seating, no body else was inside. The fried mushrooms were good.

Yelp
Decided to check out this Irish pub with a friend. We have both been to Ireland so the bar was set high. Easy to find location on W Orr Street in Anderson with lots of parking. Great Irish pub vibe. There was a stage for Live Music every Friday @ 7pm (according to the menu -featuring the best in Celtic, Folk, & World Music). That would be fun to experience, but I bet it would be crowded! There were two dinner specials, but we chose off the menu. I wanted to try a typical dish so I went with the Belfast Fish & Chips, crispy fries & curried coleslaw. My friend chose the Woodland Chicken Pasta. Both plates had good portions and the food was good. We had coffee and fruit cobbler for dessert. Fun atmosphere. I'll have to take the hubby next time. I think he'd enjoy trying out the different beers.

Yelp
Delicious fish and chips. Service was good and attentive. Place was inviting. Bathroom clean. Angelica was a great server, she was always smiling, made good eye contact, and gave great meal recommendation. Stop on by it's great eats, good and fast!

Yelp
The family and I went to this location yesterday on St Patrick's Day. After receiving a check the server charged me for whatever I didn't order and I had to deal with the waitress. I ordered 2 sex on the beach (first one was weak then second one I asked for the stronger one) and I told her that I wanted to speak with the manager and she said the manager was not available at that time. What I have here says 1 Hurricane SOB for $8 and 2 sex on the beach for $18.

Yelp
Outside seemed sketch but food was excellent! Our server was fantastic! I had a soup, my husband got a burger & he said it was amazing!

Yelp
Anderson, you have some seriously talented chefs. McGees has become our Sunday go-to for brunch after church. Never disappointed with our meal. All servers are terrific. We usually sit inside but are on the patio today which is so enjoyable and comfortable. The puppy next to us thinks so, too.

John D.

Yelp
I dined at McGees Irish Pub in Anderson with my family. The food and service was okay but we will never return to this establishment! Our table was near the bar area so we couldn't help but overhear the bartender Payton having inappropriate conversations with another staff member. She made it sound like she was bragging about being a prostitute on meth and about her having her private part pierced!! Our appetite was ruined so we had our server bring us boxes and we quickly paid and left. The way she was talking was foul and shouldn't be tolerated in a public place people go to eat. Terrible experience :(

Michael W.

Yelp
We came here on Cinco de Mayo so not crowded. Our bartender also served our table, she was great. We had the fish and chicken and chips. Good and very generous portions. Tough to top $3 Guinness specials. Great ambiance.

Yelp
We went for the 2 for special on prime rib dinner. it is their thurs night special. The food arrived to the table all wrong. Over cooked, cold . The meat was tough and tasteless. The waitress ignored us for the first 30 mins and then after the food arrived remained scarce. When she did come around I commented on the meal. She took back the food and returned with a piece that was cooked the same. The manager come over later and offered to get another piece. Came back and said they were all the same. This was a special occasion for us. Really a terrible experience all around, even with a partial credit.

Diane S.

Yelp
Good food, friendly staff. Interesting atmosphere. It had a lot of Irish favorites, like shepherds pie and bangers and mash. I loved the hush puppies with lavender honey. My burger was a bit overdone but still tasty.

Yelp
I Had a hankering for fish and chips, this place hit the spot! Perfect Buttery, flakey batter and delicious white cod. Iced Tea was great and the he service was top notch! Can't go wrong with McGees!

Garrett P.

Yelp
Definitely a hidden gem! Highly recommend! The fish & Chips were awesome! Beer was also served very cold and good. Also! Service was VERY good!!

Evan M.

Yelp
Best Irish pub I know. The food is crave able. The Guinness is done right. The atmosphere is exactly what you want. The service was top notch.
google avatar

Jack F.

Yelp
Check Facebook; get the special if it's the prime rib. Cooked to perfection, garlic mashed potatoes, with an au jus and a creamy horse radish on the side. Wait staff is helpful and friendly pairing a wine for you upon request And desert... not sure it was plum pudding, but whatever it is has currents brown sugar, and is served warm. Appetizer to desert for $26.00! Highly recommend this!!!!

Lynne B.

Yelp
This is our "go to" we love the food, service & atmosphere! My personal favorite is Shrimp & Grits and absolutely love Bumbershoots! We've never had a bad experience in the many years we've been going here. Highly recommend!

Collin H.

Yelp
Food was absolutely awesome, drink menus are exactly what a pub should have. Reminds me of Tommy Condons in Charleston SC. Our server/bartender was by herself and she handled everything ( other tables also ) with grace and ease. I wonder if any Irish Society has any meetings here?

Amber M.

Yelp
Amazing Irish pub. The decorations brought me right back to Blarney, Ireland. Lamb stew, shepherd pie, and pork chops were all delicious. Crème brûlée, fruit crisp, and bourbon cheese cake were perfect. Our waitress was the best and our party of seven had a wonderful time.

Caitlyn M.

Yelp
Highly recommend McGee's Scot-Irish Pub! Service was phenomenal! Our waitress Isha was a huge part of our excellent experience here as well as the delicious entrees we picked! I had the Shepherds Pie and I haven't had one that good since I ordered one at a family owned restaurant in Ireland itself. The crème brûlée was also absolutely delicious! We will definitely be coming back the next time we are in Anderson!
google avatar

Ron C.

Yelp
Came here for lunch as I saw on the menu that they had fish and chips. The food was amazingly good. My mom and I both ordered the fish and chips and it was one of the best we had in a long time. Our server was on point and very attentive. The ambiance was a little dark but that's expected from an Irish pub so it was good
google avatar

Yelp
Haven't been in a while. The Thursday Prime Rib for 2 Special lured me in. It was excellent and a great deal. I was surprised at how their menu had grown. Got another go to now. It had been right under my nose the whole time!
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
The food is always great and the atmosphere inviting. My fav is the Bangers and Mash, but if you are a beef eater, theirs is local, from Starr, SC. The bread is as good as cake!
google avatar

Barb S.

Yelp
Service was excellent. Atmosphere was great. We had spring rolls and chicken livers for appetizers. Haddock and Blackened Ribeye for entree. Everything was very good except the steak. It tasted gamey. I tried two different bites...couldn't swallow it, but my husband ate most all of it but a small piece. Great menu selection.

Joni D.

Yelp
Traveling through the area with family and had to check out this place since all of us love a good Irish pub! The ambience made us feel we really were in Ireland, and their draft beer selection was excellent. I chose the Blackened salmon with a Caesar salad on recommendation from the waitress and the chef cooked it to perfection. The waitress was very attentive, thoughtful. If I lived in the area, I would have gone back to hear the live Celtic band playing the next weekend. They have an outdoor area in addition to the huge bar and dining area that was cozy and welcoming. Looks like they have a thriving business and I can see why.
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
Not good for husband's birthday brunch. Had to ask our waitress about specials after hearing another waitress describing them to her table. We didn't get descriptions, just told what they were out of at noon in a mostly empty restaurant. Joe liked his corned beef hash and eggs but no toast? I think it was forgotten. My breakfast "bowl" was cold, microwave bacon, and a weird taste I couldn't put my finger on until I started finding large rosemary leaves which don't belong in eggs. No description on the menu. Disappointed, had a great lunch across the street on Friday and should have tried their brunch.
google avatar

Holli H.

Yelp
This is a cute little spot! Great food, good service, and beautiful atmosphere. Feels like you're in an authentic Irish pub. Love it!

Marna G.

Yelp
Great food, nice outdoor covered dining, Celtics entertainment on occasion, nice staff. Grilled salmon with dill sauce, corned beef and cabbage, and fish and chips are three of my favorites.
google avatar

Mia G.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere. Great food and great music. Service has always been great. I would definitely recommend visiting if you're in the Anderson area

Judy S.

Yelp
The food was really great! Service was good. It would have been nice to have a little slice of bread with our meal. It looks like a great place to meet up with friends.
google avatar

Ali R.

Yelp
Cabbage egg rolls were my favorite. My Hubby enjoyed his hash. I wanted the spinach, but couldn't customize the order for non poached eggs. Service was good. Brunch on Sundays.

William K.

Yelp
There is a real pub atmosphere here. We started with a Dragon Eggs App for $9.50, very tasty. A Fish N Chips was $16. The fish and chip servings were generous. A draft beer was $6.50. Payton was personable.

Glenn L.

Yelp
Sorry to say it was a poor experience. Food was terrible. Cornbeef tasted like it was soaked in 100 pounds of salt. Wife's cornbeef was a solid lump of tough meat. Service better at a McDonalds. Fast with no return visit to our table. Locals seemed to be having a good time just drinking-like a pub. Extremely disappointed, really looked forward to a great irish meal. Off our list. WASTE OF $88.00

Tim D.

Yelp
This review is my opinion after one visit, ordering two entrees. If you have never been to McGee's Scot-Irish Pub and are looking for something new, by all means give them a try. But, I will not recommend, Here's why. After following McGee's on Facebook and seeing their positive reviews, my wife and I were exited and optimistic to give them a try in hopes that we would find a new spot for both good food and entertainment. (McGee's has live music and trivia nights.) McGee's opens at 11am on Friday. Our reservation was for 5:30. We arrived at 5:20. Having an early reservation we were not surprised that there were very few people at this time. Our first impressions when entering was cramped, old, outdated, with confusing decor. More wanna be sports bar than Irish pub. But, ok whatever. Not a deal breaker. Staff was friendly and we were seated promptly. Once seated, I noticed that there were no drinks of any kind listed on menu or on table. No beer list, wine list, mixed drink list, or soft drink list. Nowhere. Is this a Pub? Oh well, we ordered sweet tea. My wife ordered the "Deluxe" (lol) Shepherds Pie and I ordered the Guinness Pork Chop. Entrees did not come with side salads or bread. But, they were available as separate purchases on menu. Meals arrived in about 5 minutes after ordering, no lie. First impression was sad, pitiful, and confusing. Both plates looked and tasted like what you would get at an average catered meal event. Explains the quick order time? Wife's "Deluxe" Shepherds Pie was anything but Deluxe. More, "What the hell"? Bland ground beef with under cooked peas, topped with a small scoop of thin, watery, lumpy potatoes, barely a drizzle of cheese, and why was there a wedge of tomato in the potatoes? Cold and very disappointing. My Guinness Pork chop was cooked ok. Not tough or undercooked. Just ok. But, over seasoned. Very salty (from resting in a brine I assume) and I tasted no Guinness. Served with the same small scoop of watery, tasteless, pitiful mashed potatoes and literally 2 small bites of spinach that tasted like it was sautéed in oyster sauce? Strange and again salty AF. Over all, not at all what we expected. Pretty bad and over priced for what we got. $47 for 2 sub-par entrees with no salad or bread, and 2 teas. Cancelled our future dinner reservation. Thought we might return at another time for music or trivia and just have drinks. But, after seeing McGee's management responses to other reviews, we decided that we will not be spending our hard earned money on this overrated establishment. In one of the management responses to a customer review they literally said to the customer, "Bless your heart..". We all know what that means. How rude! First impressions mean a lot to us!

Connesta K.

Yelp
I love this place. Best food, service, and ambiance for a casual pub experience. It's been our favorite for years. The fried mushrooms and dragon eggs..mmm. Must visit!
google avatar

Daryl B.

Yelp
Not impressed with the food. The Eggs Benedict and hash browns were barely edible. Probably won't go back

Del K.

Yelp
Just your basic Irish pub done very well. More of a cafe than bar, it gets repeat business from us
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
We love this place! The service is always great, the food is always delicious! We have been there 3 or 4 times over the past couple years and have not had a bad experience....even showing up on Valentine's Day without a reservation, they were awesome about it! I highly recomment this establishment to anyone we talk to.

Amy B.

Yelp
Best Scot-Irish food around and the service was amazing! We will be coming back and bringing others with us!

Yelp
VERY GOOD!! If your in Anderson it's a must try!! It feels like your in an Irish pub!! I asked for no cheese on my pizza AND THEY DIDN'T PUT CHESSE ON MY PIZZA!! I have been to countless places where they didn't care!! Best Chicken BBQ pizza ever.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
WONDERFUL! Just moved to the area and wanted a cool place to take family who came to visit; this place exceeded our expectations! Great service, food was SO delicious and plated beautifully. Highly recommend the Celtic Dragon Eggs (fried pimento cheese balls with a jezebel strawberry jalapeño sauce) and Bumbershoots (fried mushrooms) for appetizers. Every entree we had was awesome and our kids LOVED their "Wee Ones" options too! OH, and they have lots of Gluten Free options marked on the menu, which was awesome for me personally! We look forward to coming back many times, especially to check out the charming outdoor patio when it's warmer. Sláinte!

Danny S.

Yelp
Not enough kilts and men around worst gay club in the city. Not one hotty . I need my men to be hot was not hot food was cold no strippers. What kinda mcdonalds is this

Blanca R.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed McGee's Scottish pub. I love the ambience. The food is pretty good, but I love the Scottish beer and music.

Beth P.

Yelp
Hubby and I were in Anderson Saturday afternoon, and had heard McGees was the best pub and food in town! So we decided to give it a shot. The atmosphere is so neat, I'm sure during nice weather there are lots of people outside. Inside us so nice and cozy, lots to look at, flags and cool signs up all over. I'm not a big Irish beer drinker, and Blue moon was on special, so we started with two of those. The menu was very interesting and had lots to choose from. Definitely has an Indian influence. I didn't want anything too filling, so we both chose fish and chips. Pretty sure it was cod, deep fried in a light fluffy batter, yum... oh my that was soo good! I could only eat one of the two pieces of fish on my plate, and a few fries. It was very good. I would go back, and try the corned beef and cabbage, or the lamb stew. I will say their prices are a little in the higher side.
google avatar

Adam W.

Yelp
Nice bartender. Good drinks if you stick with Guinness and an Irish whiskey. Keep it simple. Shephard's pie would really piss off Gordon Ramsey. Probably just one of those places you go to listen to music and drink until your face melts off. Probably won't go back. But 45% of me still wants to.
google avatar

Dyan R.

Yelp
We had a great time at this pub. My friend has shrimp and grits and I had the fish and chips. It took us no time to be served and Britney was a great server. She checked up on us all the time and drinks never got empty. My fish and chips were great and my friend left nothing but shrimp tails. The price was very good and the parking was great.

Jennifer K.

Yelp
The food was good. The waiter tended to all my food allergies. Found the perfect wine and the atmosphere was great! A definite must go!
