MICHELIN Starred Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Favorite New York Dining Spots

"As someone who loves to read physical books and magazines, I gravitate to the Seaport location for its smart, not-overwhelming selection—the perfect mix of renowned and rising writers—an extremely knowledgeable team, a coffee shop I love, and a great selection of original greeting cards and stationery." - Nancy DePalma

New York Bookstore McNally Jackson Will Add a Bar to Seaport Store in NYC - Eater NY

"Popular independent bookstore McNally Jackson’s expansion to the Seaport District was approved by the community board this week. It will open along the waterfront at 4 Fulton St. in a 7,500-square-feet space that will also include a cafe with beer and wine. The space formerly housed an Ann Taylor. The original McNally Jackson lives on Prince Street in Nolita, and a smaller second shop opened in Williamsburg last year. While the original has a coffee cafe, this will be the first location to serve alcohol." - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya

My husband and I had walked past this bookstore many times and finally decided to check it out. Once we stepped inside, we ended up staying much longer than we intended—it’s hard not to get drawn in! The store offers a wonderful variety of books across all genres, and we kept finding something new around every corner. I especially enjoyed the second floor; it felt cozy and was perfect for exploring at a leisurely pace. The carpets added a warm, homey touch that made the atmosphere even more inviting. I picked up a book that caught my attention and settled into one of their comfortable sofas to read a few pages. The charm of the place is irresistible! You definitely won’t leave without purchasing a few interesting finds. It’s a lovely spot for both book lovers and casual readers alike!

Yesterday I attended a reading sponsored by the “Atlantic Reads: the author was Walter Mosley and his new book is Gray Dawn. Mr. Mosley is very kind, a genius, and he shares with the audience, his life and his compassion and his thanks. He finished a wonderful Q&A and then he signed his books for the people. This was held at McNally Jackson books on the South St., Seaport number four Fulton St in New York City. This book store is worthy of a visit. They protect the authors and they protect their clients. They have a wonderful café that makes delicious, hot or cold coffee, latte, etc. the bathrooms are clean and everyone has a smile waiting for you. Atlantic festival was in New York from September 18 through the 20th and I went back to McNally Jackson today Saturday and purchased the book written by Allison Roman. Unfortunately, Miss Roman could not stay to Sign her books for the people. She gave a wonderful reading and a wonderful talk and she has a beautiful book. I was disappointed because it is a gift for someone, but I am sure the person that I give this book to Will love it. I am adding for you all some pictures of other things that happen in New York with the Atlantic festival. The Atlantic is a very important magazine. I will suggest that you go through these photographs that I’m sending and subscribe to the Atlantic and that way you will have an understanding of events shaping our world at this time and you will know what they are doing. I know for sure that you will be happy. As far as the South Seaport in New York if you have not been there or you Are thinking about visiting the south Seaport, please do there’s so much going on there and in the streets, the cobble street. Oh, and there is a photograph of a gentleman who is a photographer who has done some really good photographs and videos while he was working at the festival. Take a look at his stuff. I took a photograph of his name so someone at this event can find him. Xo

Google
Its just an amazing place it’s comfy and the stuff is nice (except that barista) has good variety of books and amazing ambiance and good location i could just sit upstairs and read books for hours it was that comfortable

Ann S.

Google
Really nice diverse selection of books. They have a quiet very comfortable 2nd floor if you just want to spend some time reading there. Down floor has a coffee bar and a nice atmosphere.

Wayne G.

Google
One of the most romantic bookstores I’ve seen! Broad collection of authors and genres including classics and popular new reads!! Available seating and coffee shop inside.

NY

Google
Beautiful bookstore love the collection. However, I’ve never seen meaner staff in any establishment than this place. From the white gentleman at the cashier to the black lady at the desk where they make the gift wraps - incredibly rude staff. They don’t wanna answer any question they don’t wanna help out they wanna make sure you regret entering this establishment. Just wow. I visited the store today 12/23 if this feedback helps.

Kate S.

Google
Great bookstore with a nice stationery room. Smaller than the SoHo location but still has a great, curated selection of books. I always find something at McNally Jackson and attribute that to how much thought they put into curating and displaying books.

Ella L.

Google
The cafe inside is wonderful! Planning to come again! My favorite part was the second floor! I watched a book signing happen in the main room and it was really fun to see the authors come in to say hi!

Yelp
2024 has been one of the most difficult year in my life. After 23 years working in the Finance, I am burnt out and decided to take some time off (I guess this is mid-life crisis?). I can't think of anything better than to be surrounded by books, and the charming little cafe with lovely staff really helps the days a bit more bearable. Thank you to all the good people working at this little lovely gem in Seaport. We each fight an invisible battle that no one can tell from the outside, remember to always be kind xx
google avatar

Joshua A.

Yelp
One of the best bookstores in the city! The location, selection and coffee/drink bar downstairs make it an amazing spot! It's a go to every time I'm at the Seaport!
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
This place was gorgeous! Loved the layout of the books and the super comfy areas they have laid out. They have a very broad selection of books and their prices are on par. The employees were super friendly and helpful. Definitely enjoyed the visit and will be back when I'm in the area.
google avatar

Benjamin W.

Yelp
A S tier book store. They have so much selection, they have a cute little coffee shop included and they have pretty reasonable prices. But above all the vibes are immaculate, I could sit here and read a book for the rest of my life. They have so many areas to come and sit and try their books. Overall always an amazing experience.
google avatar

Kimberly W.

Yelp
There is so much to live about this place-all the things rolled into one: fabulous selection of books & trinkets for those who love books (or love someone who loves books!), excellent service (not too pushy, just there to help when you're ready), AND a lovely beverage area!
google avatar

Udit A.

Yelp
Mcnally Jackson is a charming book cafe located near Pier 17. The store has an extensive selection of books and numerous cozy nooks for reading. It is an extremely welcoming store with helpful staff. Highly recommended!

Yelp
One of my favorites. They are nominally a bookstore, but they really have it all: + Two floors of books. + Event space where they do author talks, book clubs, etc. + Throughout the space, they put leather couches and chairs for reading among the shelves, which I really liked. + A cafe that doubles as a bar, with tables, booths, outdoor patio seating, and bar seats. + Wine and spritzes for sale as well as coffeeshop staples. And cookies! + The best part: they are open late, till 9 most days. I hate how early most cafes close, so this is so clutch for me. And the transition from coffeeshop for work to bookshop for reading to bar for a drink is so fun. The decor is perfect, too. I love the brick archways throughout the upstairs.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
I love this bookstore! It's always nice to stop by after visiting the pier to see what new books are out. It's also great to stop by before you head to the pier to grab a cup of coffee since they also have a cafe inside.
google avatar

Kristi L.

Yelp
Love this bookstore! It's way bigger than expected with many, many places to sit and enjoy a book. There are two floors of books from nearly every genre plus a cute café on the first floor that allows laptop use from 10AM to 6PM. This is such a staple in Seaport, and I'm so glad a bookstore like this can thrive in an era where many struggle or disappear completely. Staff is always kind and courteous here, and the ambience is exactly what you want from a bookstore: considerately quiet. Definitely a must-visit if you love a great bookshop and good coffee.
google avatar

Shane B.

Yelp
Best independent book store I've traveled ! Tucked away in Seaport, it's size is deceiving since it's hiding a second floor above the coffee shop. Second floor is three times the size of the bottom, and an updated, classy, book haven. You can definitely spend hours here enjoying the ambiance of this small town bookstore!
google avatar

Yelp
Gorgeous, gorgeous bookstore. Love the way that they sorted and displayed their books, very much intentionally thought out. The staff was also super friendly. It was super convenient that they offered coffee/tea in house also. Shortly after visiting this shop, I was browsing through Spring Street in Downtown Manhattan and I stumbled upon the cutest "Pen/Calligraphy" shop / next door there was a stationary shop too. I purchased from both stores when I realized that the bag they put my items in said "McNally Books" and it all made sense. My experience was amazing. They offered a variety of really beautiful pens and stationary that honestly you can not find just anywhere. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the items they were offering. Basically, visit their sister shops too!

Caroline W.

Yelp
Staff members are rude, they need attention and for that they don't give a good service. This is America so behave like one American, know your job and perform it well. You are staff you don't own the bookstore. One female made told me to get my own cookie so I had to lift the jar and the male who was upstairs came to the coffee area and placed himself right by the door when I was leaving and won't move to let me go. These kids are so rude.

Yelp
There's something appealing about bookstores. My daughter and I love exploring them. I remember when I came across "Notes from Underground" in my late teens, I was enchanted and thought...Wow, nice to meet you, Dostoevsky. From then on, I've become a fan of dead Russian authors. Finding a tiny book of A Bad Business: Essential Stories was a pleasant surprise here. This branch is probably the best of all the McNally J., because it has a small Cafe doubling as a Bar serving a decent matcha latte and beer, if you like. The second floor offers more peace and comfy couches to peruse your favorite literary genre. A nice area for graphic novels, manga and children's section. Attractive arrangements of writing paraphernalia, that one would be tempted to buy something one didn't need. Most importantly, the bookstore sits next to Funny Face Bakery, but that's another review.
google avatar

Jehan J.

Yelp
Love the vibes of this place! There is also a nice little cafe inside to get some drinks and chill. Their espresso machine was down when I went but I got their matcha and it was very good (and I'm picky about my matcha).

Yelp
Came to this bookstore for an author event and was pleasantly impressed. It's nice that the Seaport has a bookstore of this magnitude now. When you walk in, it seems kind of small with some books on the right and the cafe on the left. Between the two though are some stairs that take you to a second floor where you are surrounded by books. My favorite part is that you can get a bit lost in it's surprising stretch of book rooms. One room leads to another room that leads to another room. You get the sense, almost, that it's bigger on the inside than the outside. I highly recommend stopping by if you need a book, want a relaxed place for a drink/coffee, or just need some time to walk/think.
google avatar

Sara Y.

Yelp
love this location. Super relaxing vibe and cafe is the next door. this location is highly recommended. 1st fl book store and stationary + cafe and bathroom. 2nd fl is more books. Non judgmental vibes. I'll come back soon :)
google avatar

Marie K.

Yelp
It's a five star bookstore for me. I love this place even better than barnes and noble. And that says a lot because I love barnes and noble. It's the vibe the staff and the view from second floor out to pier 17! You can even get your daily dose of vitamin D from sitting near the window if you come out when the sun's out!
google avatar

Essie L.

Yelp
This is the cutest bookstore, I love coming here. The selection's good, and they have a small cafe on the first floor. The staff are very helpful and friendly. I love their recent highlight of Asian American works!
google avatar

Andie B.

Yelp
I been here a few times and each time I am still confused to where to find certain sections. However, the staff is usually nice. The bookstore is two floors and it has seats to relax. They also have a cafe on the ground floor. They have some used books, stationary items along with a few other knick knacks. Prices for the books are cover price.
google avatar

Beth L.

Yelp
I have found one of my very favorite spots in the city! I was here on a rainy Saturday and it was so cozy, I could have spent the whole day. And what a quaint spot located in the Seaport. My cappuccino was fantastic but my plan the next time I'm here is to buy a book and sit at the bar with a glass of wine.
google avatar

Jess Z.

Yelp
There is something magical about this place. This location of McNally Jackson is my all time favorite bookstore, it is so stinking cute and the downstairs is a coffee shop which is extra brownie points! As you walk up the steps to where a majority of the books are located, it feels as if you are being transported to a brand new place. It is so calming and peaceful to just sit at one of the couches and soak in all the good vibes. If you enjoy reading, bookstores or coffee shops, you must visit this location of McNally Jackson! I promise you will not regret it.
google avatar

Suzune K.

Yelp
They have huge varieties of book and some cute stationaries. The cafe is cozy and goods for working or reading.
google avatar

Corrine B.

Yelp
This is the perfect bookstore to have anywhere, but I love it here. It's calming & soothing, yet it gives me a charge going section to section. So many books so artfully displayed. It smells wonderful, like every magical bookstore since my childhood. It's just a happy place. A serious place. A helpful place. A hopeful place. And they've got a fabulous section of journals and notebooks. Today I just had time to pop in to grab a new tote and a couple journals, and that was enough to put a smile on my face. Highly recommend shopping here.
google avatar

Kristelle B.

Yelp
This place is an absolute paradise for every book lover. It weirdly opens late at 11 am and I had two instances wherein I had to wait outside in the freezing cold because of that Probably the only con... but it's so beautiful inside and surprisingly huge too. They have an upper floor with even more diverse selection of books. This is definitely my most favorite location of theirs.
google avatar

Ryn E.

Yelp
Truly one of my favorite spots in the city. I love the way they organize the top seller books as well as the many many categories. Stationary and notebook section is great, and I also love the coffee shop for doing work and getting great lattes. The upstairs is also so spacious and the staff is always so helpful when I am looking for a particular book. Support is also my favorite neighborhood as it's so cute/spacious/clean. Just overall an awesome spot
google avatar

Martina C.

Yelp
Yay! The seaport district/fidi finally have a good bookstore back! It just opened and it's wonderful. It's located inside Schermerhorn Row, the home of the Seaport Museum, and you can catch here and there similar historic wooden ceiling and floors. The first floor has stationary, suggested books, magazines and a nice cafe. The second floor is huge, with a really cute area for kids, a section of vintage and old books to die for, all other interests and topics, and lots of chairs and armchairs.
google avatar

Ami Y.

Yelp
I really enjoyed visiting Mcnally Jackson here! The location feels homey and less crowded than the store in SoHo. The couches on the top floor is very comfortable and it felt like I was cozying up in a country home away from the city when I sat down and tried reading some books. I liked how books were shelved based on categories like "food stories (nonfiction)." It would be nice to have more books with staff recommendation comments, though. There is a coffee shop connected to the bookstore but it feels more separated from the bookstore than in SoHo (which is a good thing, since you can shop in the quiet and chat at the coffee shop). I didn't see a menu and I had no issue asking the barista what they offer, but I'd feel more comfortable knowing the price of the drink written somewhere. The vanilla latte to stay came in a big cup, which I appreciated.

Yelp
This bookstore is an absolute gem. Every time I'm having a bad day I stroll in and immediately feel better. The staff are all wonderful, kind, friendly and helpful which is rare these days. The space is glorious, with beautiful exposed beams to remind you of the historic neighborhood and history of NYC. Their children's reading room is beautiful, large and calming. I love that the staff have their picks for the children's books as well! It is so sweet! And then there is the selection of amazing stationary, books and pencil holders which get me every time! PLUS as an added bonus, should you need a coffee or libation they have the loveliest little cafe space! I could not ask for more. My daughter and I love this place so much. It really brings so much value and character to the neighborhood and I hope everyone does their part to keep them there!

Yelp
Love this book store. Lots of books upstairs and down; cozy. I felt like it was quite easy to browse. Didn't get the coffee so can't say much, but really liked the bookstore.
google avatar

Jess A.

Yelp
A gem! I didn't think I could love the Seaport more, then I discovered this bookstore with a coffee shop. The coffee is great and there are a few tables where you can easily work for a bit. Then stroll upstairs and browse their book collection. Such a lovely spot, highly recommend.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
I adore this bookstore! The selection is huge, and I was able to find some older poetry and fiction that I haven't been find elsewhere. There are 2 stories to the bookstore, which are both quite expansive, and plenty of comfy seating upstairs (on a weekday during the morning/afternoon, most seats were empty). I also enjoy their selection of notebooks to buy, which are very high quality. It was hard to limit my purchases here! There is a fairly small used book section as well. The decor is lovely, and the cafe inside the bookstore on the 1st floor is warm and inviting, with upholstered, comfortable seating and coffee bar seating as well. Lots of students, and was hard but not impossible to get a seat on a weekday. I enjoyed my oat latte with my work and a book. The view of south street seaport outside was also lovely.

Yelp
I don't have enough good things to say about this bookstore /coffee shop. From the location to the interiors and the mood of the place to the wonderful barista Byron (Lord Byron) . This place is a very much needed addition of culture in an otherwise street full of touristy trinkets.

Vivian R.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this bookstore! A perfect book-lovers' escape from a cold winter day. This store has an incredible selection of books, from memoirs, all sorts of fiction, nonfiction, plays, and more. I was able to find a book I had been searching for for a while, which I was so happy about - the employees were very nice and helpful, kindly helping me check if the store had a few books I was specifically looking for. Keep in mind that the cafe is takeout only at this time (understandable given COVID). Nonetheless, the upstairs section has several chairs set up throughout where you can curl up with some books. Overall, this bookstore is so lovely and nice - it's right by the water, and you can see the River / seaport right from the store. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I love that there is FINALLY another bookstore in the financial district. The closest one is I believe a Barnes and Noble on Worth street but that's basically a 30 minute walk away from my job. I miss the days when I would go to the Borders over on Wall street. We're talking somewhere between 8-10 years ago. This spot is adorable. There's a little cafe downstairs and an additional upstairs area. Great selection with interesting editions and volumes. I was trying to find a book for a baby shower and B&N didn't have it and McNally saved the day. Yes, 'The Poky Little Puppy' was my absolute favorite childhood book ever. He was a spunky naughty little lad and everything I aspired to be and wasn't in life.

Vanessa G.

Yelp
I walked into this cafe in the middle of a fainting spell- I have never had a scare like that and I was terrified out of my mind. Everyone, from the patrons to the employees, were incredibly kind, going as far as to lend me an apple watch to take an EKG, sitting with me until a parent came and picked me up, and helping me through the whole ordeal. I am beyond grateful for the generosity and kindness of everyone at this establishment. The croissants are great too :-)
google avatar

Kiersten G.

Yelp
This place is constantly packed. They host intimate events, have wonderful coffee (plus free WiFi) and tons of the latest books. Their library is extensive and they have a large selection upstairs. Expensive books, but worth it because you are supporting a local business! The mid century modern decor is right on trend and definitely provides a relaxing, yet instagram-able atmosphere. This is a local hangout, but also a tourist destination for anyone visiting South Street Seaport.
google avatar

Ashlee B.

Yelp
I could've spent ALL DAY in this bookstore! It is in the cutest area and is the perfect spot to stop in and browse between sightseeing. The books were so perfectly curated and I would've walked out with armfuls of them had we not had tons more walking to do. I ultimately settled on 3 books but could've gotten many more. One of the best bookstores I've been to in years.

Michaela P.

Yelp
This is such great looking bookstore. I love that it is combined with a coffee/wine bar. I have been so excited to take my daughters there. Unfortunately the experience was disappointing due to the staff. Not even one of the employees greeted us when entering. They just sat and visited with each other. Upstairs, a staff member only asked "Do you need help?" because I was in her way when she was trying to put a book on a table. Then when my husband checked out the clerk simply took the book from him and told him the price and said "Do you want to pay 10 cents for a bag?". After that she just handed him the bag and looked at him. He told her Thank you, and she was like "yeah" It seems so sad to let poor employee customer service tarnish such a great place.
google avatar

Daniel G.

Yelp
Great bookstore in a wonderful historic building. Best of all, unlike so many cafes with blaring music, they actually want you to stay and relax. Have a read. Nor is it crowded. Leather chairs and sofas abound, along with some desks and tables. Nice-looking cafe downstairs. Everything is chill, brown, clean-musty/parchment-y. The children's/young readers' section is a nook. Most of the offerings are new prints, but there are a few shelves of quality, used books at good prices.

Abigail S.

Yelp
I absolutely love this book store and coffee shop duo. My reason for reviewing is to highlight how rude the main coffee shop gentleman employee is. Sadly myself and other friends of mine have witnessed him be super rude to customers repeatedly. So much so it's deterred us from going, which is a shame because we love working from there. Otherwise this place is amazing!
google avatar

Jameson B.

Yelp
This is my favorite bookstore in the entire city. The staff is incredibly polite and helpful and the coffee shop is top notch.
google avatar

Tracy C.

Yelp
A really cute place to hang out at the Seaport. The selection of books is great, and the titles they carry are well-curated. There are plenty of places to sit and read, and the little cafe downstairs is good if you want a quick snack. The architecture of the space is well thought out and a great use of such an old building. I ended up buying a book that I was reading while checking the place out. Can't wait to visit again!
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Best place to discover a new book! I think I've bought maybe 5 books since they've opened! Haven't tried the Café yet, but have friends who have and they give it 5 stars as well!
google avatar

Bill C.

Yelp
This place is a really cool addition to the seaport. First floor is best sellers and coffee shop. Second floor is much larger and carries multiple genres. It also had a very nice children's book area. My son loved it.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
I've been living down in this area for almost four years and I am so excited to finally have a bookstore down here. Let's start off by saying the staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The store itself is deceiving. At first I thought that it was only one floor, but to my surprise it spans the entire second floor as well. The first floor contains best sellers while the second floor has every category you could possibly imagine. The interior is perfectly decorated, a perfect balance of mid-century modern with the traditional historic architecture of the building. The store hosts numerous events such as book clubs and speakers throughout the month. Excited for this addition to the neighborhood!

Stephanie P.

Yelp
I stopped by the bookstore based on the recommendation from my friend. It's very cute-- pre covid, there was a dine in cafe on the first floor and people were allowed to read books and hang out. It's definitely different now but this place is still a gem! New releases and best sellers are on the first floor and there is a whole second floor of different genres and a pretty large children's section. Located in the heart of south street, this place is in a cute area and in the downtown developing district on Fulton St. oh, and they allow dogs! Super dog friendly.
google avatar

Gina F.

Yelp
The best bookstore I've been to in a long time. I'm lucky enough to live near their "goods for the study" store on W8st but this is a true gem. As soon as you walk in you feel like you are in your neighborhood bookstore (I actually live "uptown", In The village). Books, books, books, pens, planners and even magazines but wait there is MORE. Peak toward the cozy cafe and you will find a flight of stairs, take them.... upstairs is incredible. So much space, so many books and lots of places to sit. You can spend hours upon hours here perusing everything. The children's section is a stunner as well. It even has a teepee for the smaller readers to hang out in with a treasured read. Don't skip the cafe. Pretty decent amount of seating, Including a nice counter where you can chat books and maybe charge your device. This was such a treasure to find in the finally coming around south street seaport area. Pssst... they have a clean bathroom. Keep,it that way AND wash your hands!

B L.

Yelp
Cute and cozy bookstore. However this review is for the cafe. There was a young girl and guy who were serving coffees and drinks to guests (coffees are good!). Their mannerisms were very unprofessional speaking at the top of their lungs stating how "Today is a slow tip day. Nobody is tipping!" They kept talking about how they only had $1 worth of tips and added "don't they see there are two of us?" They continued talking about their night before and the bar hopping the girl did. Not appropriate, especially when they are in a small cafe and there are people working on their laptops and reading. These kids need to level up their professionalism.
