The Best Breakfast Sandwiches in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Open since 1991 in South LA’s Manchester Square, M’Dears Bakery & Bistro has all the charm of an old school diner. Many come here for the biscuits, a fluffy and wonderfully buttery specialty that is a must-order. The breakfast sandwich is equally solid with a brioche bun slathered in butter, scrambled eggs, smashed Tater Tots, Monterey Jack, and comes with a choice of chicken sausage or bacon." - Mona Holmes

In CA visiting for a conference. M'Dears was recommended. We were seated right away. I had chicken wings and waffles . It was delicious! The others had fried chicken and sides. The portions were more than enough. We all had to get take out boxes. The server was very friendly. We did not have to wait long for our food either.

Hey, you guys, so im back with my review for M'Dears. I have been eating here for a while but I always get the same thing and it's always good even if you have to warm it u, which I really like. I have been in person, butit'ss really small and intimate, so I usually order to pick up or delivery. This time I got delivery. The food still arrived good and fresh. They usually give you all the condiments you need, and they staple the bag, which makes me feel more secure, and they have the nice containers that keep the food warm. I get the chicken and waffle with medium scrambled eggs with cheese and grits on the side. Usually, it is about 57.00 for two orders. I get one for my child. My other daughter gets the pancakes and bacon, which is good as well. The chicken is so good and seasoned and flavorful. The waffles are so buttery and soft. The eggs are so soft I usually just add black pepper. The grits are so good and cooked to perfection. I usually add a little butter and black pepper and a dash of salt. The workers are normally friendly, and they make sure the order is right. Now, when I do order the pancakes and bacon, the bill is closer to 70.00 or so dollars so be prepared to pay. They also can be busy, and they dont have the food sitting around, so be prepared to wait about 20-30 minutes.

It was so cute! Like a mini modern diner. It looks small but there is more seating in the back with what looks like a full bar. The waiting staff wore cute pink shirts. Spent $80 for 3 people for breakfast. My mom had shrimp and grits. The presentation was beautiful. She said it was good. I had French toast which was delicious. I wasn't a fan of the potatoes and the bacon was a little crispy. My dad had fish I think. He always eats everything so not sure how he felt about it. My waiter was attentive. We didn't sit too long to be seated or to be served. If your looking for a soul good breakfast spot this is it!

Google
Nice large room in the back, which was a nice surprise. Service was great and the food was good, as expressed by others in my party. This was my first time ordering a lunch item, oxtails, and they were just okay. A little tough and chewy and under seasoned. I like oxtails to be juicy and falling off the bone. I know that all of the breakfast items are great, so I'll stick to those next time. Will definitely return.

Cute cafe with an awesome ambience. This is a hot spot for locals and tourists. You can either eat outside or inside. They have 2 sides to this cafe/restaurant. Great prices for those on a budget. The customer service is great and friendly. Raketa is super cool and makes sure you leave satisfied. A must stop by.

Update: We visited M'Dears just after New Year’s. Our young adults said the pancakes were mediocre and tasted odd to them. I tried some of the pancakes, and I thought they tasted good. I ordered Reggie’s Vegetables, which turned out to be quite bland. Most of the vegetables, like peppers, onions, and broccoli, were raw. The home-style potatoes were the highlight of the meal. The only thing that made it better was the eggs—both overeasy and scrambled—that our children shared with me since they don’t eat them. We suspected our waiter was new because we had to ask a couple of times before we finally received our warm water. This time, we paid the bill after the meal, which was different from our experience on Mother’s Day in 2024. For our Mother’s Day celebration at M'Dears in Los Angeles, the atmosphere was very neighborhood-friendly, and you could tell they support many local businesses. A good number of people came out to celebrate the occasion. The value and portion sizes were well-balanced. They served some delicious drinks, especially one called the New Orleans Hurricane. The French toast, chicken sausage, and hotcakes were all tasty. I also tried salmon croquettes and fried snapper, but both were dry and lacked rich flavor. Overall, we enjoyed the food and were fully satisfied, so we decided to return to M'Dears in the future. The menu is extensive, and there are plenty of sweet options, like banana pudding.

Overall I gave the food 3 stars but there were some amazing standout items. The Angel biscuits & peach cobbler jelly #Amazing! You can even purchase a jar of the jelly. Hash browns were cooked perfectly. The items that did not shine so bright are: the grits were on the watery side & the hot link had a sour taste; coffee was on the weaker side. Service/ atmosphere 10/10. Very clean, servers are attentive & professional. A down home feel. I'll plan to return & try another entree.

Google
The restaurant is cute, clean and inviting. They play nice R&B music. To sit inside is a really enjoyable experience. The server was pleasant and friendly once we got his attention. At first we waited several minutes to get his attention and ask could we sit even though there was no wait. The food was bad and I don’t ever need to eat any of it again. The cornbread muffins were hard. The yams mushy and unflavored. The dressing was stiff and bland. The cabbage and macaroni and cheese was ok.

Yelp
This place is so adorable inside! The moment you walk in you're greeted with such kind individuals that are so thoughtful and helpful. My boyfriend and I wanted to grab something quick to eat but I wouldn't recommend a quick bite here, I recommend staying and sitting down for a meal. Although not the most portable of food, it was so delicious and we can't wait to come back and have a proper meal here! We both thought the prices were valid for the portions and the food was so homey and comforting that we didn't mind paying a little extra for a delicious meal. The cornbread is so good and I believe their lemonade is freshly squeezed. The food came out super quick and we were in and out in 15 minutes. Overall such a lovely restaurant and we can't wait to return when we have more time.

Yelp
And as you can clearly see by the business owner's attitude to poor reviews, this is NOT the place to eat. Instead of finding ways to improve, she'd rather tear the reviews apart. The food tastes like it should cost half of what it does. I paid $30 for a breakfast sandwich and a kids breakfast and when I called my family member and told them I was on my way they asked me for the price of everything, I told them $30 and they told me absolutely not. Turn right back around and get my refund. I did just that. We went to McDonald's. One step down from the food quality here.

Yelp
Absolutely love the food here. I've been here so many times and love the food!!! failed to do a review over all the years I came. Literally, the best soul food breakfast ever in LA. Home made food that tastes just like my grandmas and moms. Their grits and pork chops are amazing. I don't eat pork but when I rarely do this is the spot!! I love this restaurant for a good brunch. Chicken is good as well, pretty much everything on the menu. The service is pretty fast and food always so fresh and hot!! They have good drinks too !! Everything is good!! Good combo options too!! A cool atmosphere and they have decent seating in the back. Cool lil vibe but not to modern nor upscale but nice. The only con is that the parking is bad only street parking , so be prepared!! Overall I highly recommend! just a note, usually you pay for your food before you eat, but that's no biggie just know what you want to order. -M-Shay

Yelp
This place is amazing! I was invited to meet some community partners for brunch. One of the best soul food restaurants in Los Angeles. A small bistro with a big menu, full of down home southern comfort. There are about 6 booths and a couple of tables in the front. In the back, there is a bar and several dining tables and chairs. The staff here are really nice and welcoming. I plan on trying a few more items in the future but on my first visit I ordered the fried catfish, yams and macaroni and cheese. All perfectly prepared and delicious. The Arnold Palmer was well balanced and the red velvet cake was absolutely tasty. Highly recommended

Yelp
The food was fresh and delicious. The service was exceptional and very quick. The environment was quiet and peaceful. There was plenty of space to sit comfortably.

Yelp
I was invited to M'Dears by a friend a few months ago. Let me say that the food was delicious and the waiter was nice and efficient. On the way out I couldn't help but grab a slice of yellow cake with chocolate icing, FANTASTIC! Since then I've been kraving this place but its more than an hour from home. Tomorrow I'm going back with seven friends who love Southern cooking. Everyone is excited but these negative reviews thru a few off. Its shameful because these people worked hard and since going there and telling others how good the food was they laugh and tell me that they been going there forever. Why was I the last know? This place is wonderful.

Yelp
I ordered a breakfast to pick up on Sunday and was very disappointed... I ordered the salmon croquettes which were not homemade undercooked and very small.. The grits were cold and had no taste.. I also ordered a chicken sausage breakfast with eggs go to go plates look like there were kids hardly any food. I paid over $42 for two breakfasts.. the toast were cold and the biscuits were cold. Very disappointing... don't say everything is homemade when it's not... the salmon crow catch were clearly frozen, coming out of a box... both breakfasts had no taste

Yelp
This place has AMAZING food, a little high on the price but worth it if you have it to spend and want good comfort food. It's cute, quaint and small inside, staff can be a little more friendly but hey, we all have our days(however, my experience with staff has been like this each time though-lol) so I'll pray they have better days(to keep business). Thanks M'Dear's Bakery & Bistro.

Yelp
If you love hearty homemade soul food that tastes like your mom or grandma's cooking this is the place to eat at. They have a decent amount of food choices to select from. They also have health option alternates if desired. I ordered the chicken sausage and eggs with grits, it was so flavorful, tender, and delicious. I usually get their fried chicken, pork chops, or fried catfish but today I tried something different. The food is always cooked fresh to order and is very hot. I love everything at this restaurant so it's hard to decide at times :). The service is great. Everyone is welcoming and helpful. The decor is cute and trendy with modernized furniture. indoor seating is located in the front of the restaurant and the rear of the restaurant. Parking is located on the street. Note: -They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. -They have brunch on Saturday and Sunday. -If you have a big party of 20 or more you need to call and have them hold a table for you. -Great place for regular dining or to have brunch or bday parties. -They serve Alcohol, margaritas, bellini's mimosa, wine, beer, etc.

Yelp
Hidden gem on Western, we've been by here dozens of times. But today we decided to stop in and give it a try. Boy we're we surprised by the cute decor and great music selection. The service from Greg was great. Although all of my food wasn't served hot. I'll still come back.

Yelp
Food always excellent & the ladies are aLLL awesome. They be packed tho & food, getting seated can take a while. I usually order to go but occasionally I eat in house. I'm the grammar police & have told them MULTIPLE times for over a year...about their signage at each table about paying before your food comes (which in & of itself is atrocious but I guess they've had some issues). It's whether NOT wheather

Yelp
This review is before the food has even gotten here. Me and my girlfriend have been here for about 10 minutes and I have to say the Customer Service is very rude. The guy who took our order look like we were getting on his nerves when my girlfriend was just asking a certain specific thing about a plate. Then when I proceeded to order my food, I said I want my eggs with onions. He rolled his eyes and proceeded to say do you want green or white like I was bothering him and this is all before the food came. It is it. I've been trying to establish here never been you never heard of it and you mean to tell me my first experience before the food comes. This is my very first time here and I can tell you I will never be returning.

Yelp
This place was amazing! We ended up here after our first destination just didn't have it together. It was a great call because this place is extremely good. I got the catfish meal with scrambled eggs, grits and I paid the extra $6 to upgrade to two sweet potato pancakes. The fish was crispy and fresh and delicious. The grits were tasty. The sweet potato pancakes alone were worth coming back for. Delicious, savory, just incredible. Best of all, I felt like it was not that expensive too. My friend got a $7 breakfast sandwich that she loved. We also got a bottle of champagne and made mimosas. I'm definitely coming back to try the shrimp grits, the oxtail, the fried chicken etc. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Fred T.

Yelp
I heard about M'Dears but had never visited, until today. Nice bistro tucked in a small but comfortable venue on Western. Plenty of street parking. There are about 6 or 7 booths plus a couple of stools on the counter. We grabbed lunch and dined in. Service was prompt and waitress was very friendly, although things got busy but she was doing a good job in managing the customers who also were dining in. Our meal was well prepared. Beans and rice, very good and tasty. Muffin - excellent. Mac and Cheese, very good and I liked that the macaroni wasn't overcooked. They serve wine/beer and margaritas so while the venue is tight they offer a very diverse menu, at reasonable prices.

Yelp
It has been a while since I stopped by but I have frequented this establishment many times & I'm usually on the go so I usually order a breakfast burrito. I don't know what happened this time but the burrito was dry & bland, maybe because I ordered delivery this time instead of pickup but my burrito was so dry not even ketchup helped.
google avatar

Jaenell C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. It's truly a hidden gem. The southern breakfast options are unique for LA. I got the catfish combo with eggs and hash browns. My dad got the chicken and waffle. The food was hot and tasty. The service was great! Our server recommended we get the bottle of champagne instead of ordering multiple mimosas and it really paid off. It's a cute black owned establishment. I highly recommend for brunch.

Yelp
I had the Reggies Veggie's order the day before with a wonderful biscuit on the side. (I bragged about it) Well, today I placed an order for 3 Reggies Veggies over the phone, 1st of all, please caution your staff to be courteous, I realize it's busy. Additionally, a customers credit card info, should not be loudly repeated for all ears to hear. The guy taking the order was impatient, and rude. Once at home the, my family and I found our order's had no mushrooms and the portions were considerably smaller. The potatoes were just mushy, very little broccoli and spinach. The $3.25 biscuit cost over the price of the dish. Yesterday it was hot, flaky and delicious! Today the biscuits, ALL THREE OF THEM, were STALE, HARD and not HOT! Just awful!! I really wanted to drive all 3 orders back. Very disappointing for a price of $54+

Yelp
Great soulful place to have breakfast or lunch. Located on Western is between Manchester and Florence. Th menu covers all tastes. Fish, chicken, steaks. Shrimp and grits. Desserts are delicious to look at. Banana pudding, peach cobbler, pecan pie, red beans and rice, hot links. I have eaten here several times. A local hidden treasure. Must visit.
google avatar

Priscilla G.

Yelp
The waffle was nice and fluffy, unfortunately they didn't provide syrup. I also ordered chicken wings and scrambled eggs of which they sent ketchup and hot sauce that I didn't request. I gave them 3 stars because I purchased a banana pudding and carrot cake that didn't arrive with my order. I called the restaurant and was told I could come pick it up. I said I ordered delivery so I'd prefer a refund. I was then told to contact Grubhub. My annoyance is that they could create a checklist to ensure they packed the customer's order correctly. They could also have delivered my missing items since the mistake was theirs, instead they have shown me how they feel about customer service. Yes Grubhub provided the refund, thanks Grubhub.

Yelp
The food was very good! My cousin recommended this place so we took some family we had in town. I got the breakfast skillet called Joes favorite. I think they forgot to put the eggs in my the skillet because there was only potatoes & gravy at the bottom but still delicious. I thought maybe I misread the menu but as I was doing this post I looked at the menu again and it should include eggs. The Mac n cheese was on point. My aunt got the catfish sandwich and other aunt got the N'Orleans special. I'd definitely go back to try other dishes.

Tylor S.

Yelp
I have been here quite a few times normally only to pick up and leave. I didn't even get to eat today. The two women in there didn't acknowledge me. I had to go ask whether I had to write my name down on the list. After waiting 30 to 40 minutes they finally decide to clean a table. Have me sit down offer me no menu as I sit there for the next five minutes with them behind the counter, talking counting money. I decide that I'm going to leave because I'm not gonna force anyone to take my money. Very sad very unfortunate. This was a place I was raving about, but my experience today will have me never come back!
google avatar

Joyce T.

Yelp
Our waiter was very attentive, and the food was great only thing I would say that is negative is the home style potatoes had too much black pepper seasoning (maybe the cook was a little heavy on the pepper) ...lol . I plan to try their dinner menu next time.
google avatar

Terry N.

Yelp
Food was hideous! Huge chunks of uncooked onions on the bland hash browns. The two eggs appeared to be one! The chicken sausages and the butter toast was the only good items from this order! Overpriced an for a "alleged" soulfood restaurant, WHY are you charging for biscuits‼ Seek other options cause this DUMP is not it‼
google avatar

Duchess T.

Yelp
If I could give it zero I would the service wasn't good the only thing that was good was the pork chops but the pay before you eat and they don't cook your food until you pay nobody was in the rest restaurant but a couple in the front and our party in the back and it took two hours before we got our food we couldn't walk out because we were told we couldn't get our money back because only managers can do that! It was a horrible experience I will never go here again!
google avatar

Ray H.

Yelp
They always go the extra mile. Especially Kita & Ray...... They make sure. Everything that's needed is added.

Yelp
The first time I visited this restaurant was with my husband, who had been there before. The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful. Also, the service was great I was thrilled to see that they offered GRITS, which are hard to find on the West Coast nowadays! The service was fantastic!
google avatar

Yelp
I Recently been back to M'Dear's & I Must say their service has Improved & their Food is ALWAYS Flavored Well & Cooked with (what seems to be) Love. If You are looking for Good, Flavorful, Food... Come here. Don't let the line (if there is one) detour you... It's Moves Fast & It will Definitely be worth the wait.

Rickeyna F.

Yelp
Delicious! Service was good, ambiance is very cute. I will be back! Loved that this is in our community

Yelp
Hey Yall! I've been coming here for sometime and today I chose the waffle and wings. I devoured my belgian waffle. It was light and fluffy and melted in my mouth. YUMMY!! The service was good. Our wait staff was personable and efficient. The environment is welcoming. Most of the customers live in the neighborhood or nearby. Come and have your taste buds thank you!

Ross R.

Yelp
Taste has fallen off. I got the Turkey meat loaf & it was bland with NO flavor!!!! What happened to the seasoning that was once there. The muffins are still the bomb!!! The greanbeans were bland as well. I ended up mixing the greens with the muffins & fried my own pork chops & ate my dinner. A total waste of MONEY

Natalie L.

Yelp
Love this place for breakfast or lunch the atmosphere is great. The service is excellent and the food is certainly something to ride home about.

Hill R.

Yelp
We LOVE to support Black owned businesses! The food here is pretty good. Unfortunately, the service is HORRIBLE! Empty tables sat uncleaned as waiting list continued to grow. All (3) ladies walk around ignoring patons as if they're busy. Once you make it to the table, GOOD LUCK receiving timely and friendly service! Tried it twice, NEVER again.
google avatar

Yelp
I never knew this place was here until one day I wanted breakfast. I love the decor and the food was good. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for some good comfort food from your grandma kitchen, Enjoy!

Yelp
Greetings Everyone! I really hate to give a black-owned business a "demerit" or negative review, but this really needs to be conveyed!! On Memorial Day, my boyfriend and I decided to visit MaDears to hopefully eat some great food! We were expecting a huge crowd, and at the time it was light..with one booth available for us. We sat for approximately 10 minutes, before we were acknowledged to order water and Ice Tea. While we were waiting, we noticed our waitress eating in the corner between the cake display and small beverage fridge. We received our drinks, and she took our orders. I was impressed that she retained our order to memory, which was thoroughly correct. She immediately brought us our bill ( yes prior to receiving our food), and NEVER returned back to our table. This from my understanding means, that our food is not prepared because it was not paid for (which my credit card remained on the table in the check holding dish). My boyfriend and I looked at each other (after waiting 30minutes) he quickly consumed his ice tea, left $3.00 on the table (Ice Tea is $2.75), and we quickly made our way to the West Los Angeles side of town to eat at Pann's Restaurant. Here's my takeaway: 1) Ma' Dears, as a positive, it appears by observation that your restaurant is "online order" based than dine-in. 2) There definitely needs to be training for your waitstaff. This customer service is lacking in abundance. You should not have waitstaff eating in view of customers that have not received their food. This is pure unprofessionalism. 3) I'm not sure why there is a need for payment prior to receiving food (business rules are different everywhere), but if this is the norm, please make sure that the order is actually placed. I hope you receive this note with care, and for those of you who venture to eat at Ma' Dears....order it online!!! Dana Turner

Yelp
Let me tell you! I'm so upset I didn't know about this hidden gem! My favorite is the shrimp and grits!! So much favors and goodness! You will be back for more. I have to try the dinner menu, but this breakfast is everything needed to get your whole life! My love always gets the fried chicken and eggs, which that chicken is cooked to perfection. Great black business, we always feel loved when coming here! Believe me a must try spot in the hood of south LA. Love y'all bye!

Teedia E.

Yelp
Customer service was very unprofessional! The 1st waitress was pretty cool! But more interested in talking to another customer waiting for his order, then taking my order ( He absolutely would not shut up and let her take my order) but I won't fault her for that! I ordered to go... so I sat at the table in the front to wait for my order! Soon a short stocky lady emerged for the back. (with and attitude) asking me if I was waiting on someone else to come! I told her I was waiting for my food! (She greeted and smiled at all the men who came in though) Another lady came in and sat to dine in, the 1st waitress brought her out a menu and silverware, she too was asked if she was waiting on someone else to join her by the short lady! Not really sure why this question was constantly being asked! So then when my food became ready, after patiently waiting and watching her neatly packed all the other food to go, She throws my food in a plastic bag sideways like it was trash and hands it to me! Food was all fcked up when I got home! I wanted to like and support this business so BAD! I even contemplated stopping by Bravo's for breakfast, but instead drove to try them out! SMH!

Tena'e W.

Yelp
Yummy! Flavorful! I staple in a community that I absolutely love! Sometimes the portions are too small. That's problematic when you're definitely into your food.. but the deliciousness that is on my pallet I can't deny that! From the soul burrito to fried chicken, macaroni and cheese blackberry cobbler I can go on and on. Some years ago I ordered Thanksgiving dinner. Which I do not feel bad about sometime we all need a break. One of the best things I could've done but FOOD is always on point varies scrumptious seasoned to perfection!

Tray M.

Yelp
Something is different about this place. I'm curious if this business is still owned or run by the family. I never see Carrie or the daughters here anymore which isn't horrible, but the food tastes slightly different. The food is still good and the quality great. Portion sizes are a lot smaller for the money. What's going on with those yams? I think they have switched to sugar free yams. Taste like they have scaled way back on the butter and sugar. Just a hint of cinnamon with more of the natural sweetness of the yam. I don't hate it, but doesn't taste traditional. I prefer traditional. Cost of the posted plate with a drink and tip was $36.00 ouch!

Jhon K.

Yelp
I went to eat on Wednesday and saw a cockroach. The first thing I did was tell the waitress and she didn't pay attention to the matter. I went by there the next day and saw that it had been closed due to having too many cockroaches. Thanks to the health department for doing their job. I can't imagine how dirty and full of cockroaches that kitchen is. This is disgusting. If you don't believe me, the sign is on the window.

Vee C.

Yelp
All I can say is what a waste of hard earned money. The food was mediocre and bland. I ordered the fried pork chops, Mac & cheese, and yams with a slice of carrot cake. The Mac & cheese was horrible and had a jalapeño taste to it. The yams were mediocre. The pork chops were bland and could've been fried a little harder. Omg the carrot cake was dry it wasn't moist at all. My husband ordered the fried chicken his breast was soaked in grease you can tell it was old and recooked. I like to try new places and support their business but this here ain't it. I will not be purchasing anything from here again.

Kim H.

Yelp
I rated that the food could have been better because it was better years ago. I have coming there to eat for over twenty years and today My meal of Turkey meatloaf, candied yams and Cabbage was not good. I would pay a higher price for a good dinner. The gravy and meatloaf were not made inhouse and those were canned sweet potatoes and not candied yams they had no butter on them at all and the cabbage was overcooked. The style of meals at M'dears used to be Southern Louisiana, they used serve Golden sweet potatoes baked and stuffed with butter and cinnamon, the pork chops were cooked until tender, the meatloaf used to be very tasty, this new turkey meatloaf tasted like rubber. Please, owners buy a better quality of food. I enjoy eating at your little place and I don't mind paying more money for a good meal.

Yelp
Whether dining in or having it delivered, there hasn't been a time when my food wasn't FIRE!!! M'Dear's hits the spot EVERY TIME! - French Toast - Country Potatoes - Grits Oh and if I wasn't a vegetarian, I'd most DEFINITELY be KILLIN' some salmon croquettes, eggs and grits!!

Yelp
If i could leave zero i would. The food is amazing, do not get me wrong but every time i order they forget something.. something as small as butter for your waffles... but they'll put hot sauce in the bag as if i eat hot sauce on my damn waffle. We call in and ask and they always blame the package girl even when we put it bold letters "please add butter for my waffles".

Yelp
Unfortunately, this will be the last time ordering delivery from M'Dears. Why? Because there is ALWAYS something missing from my order. It makes no sense for me to order delivery and then have to get up and drive over there to pick up what they forgot (or whatever excuse they give that day) to put in the bag. Today, we have six pancakes that will be eaten dry. Why? No syrup. Today we will be eating jelly by itself. Why? Because the wheat toast is missing. In addition, I ordered turkey bacon and was sent pork bacon. However, the food is good. But I'm done with them. Parking is horrible so going for pick up is not in my plans.

Yelp
We had wonderful Mother's Day experience at this restaurant. Food was absolutely amazing and flavorful but the customer service was even better! Despite the restaurant being full due to holiday, the staff went above and beyond. Will be returning!
