Walked out of akumin and something stopped me here and I'm so glad I did because I've only had the lamb curry so far, but it is so good! Can't wait to eat the other pies I got 😋

The biltong rivals that of any place back home in Sunny South Africa they got those quintessential spices with the cracked coriander. I like mine thin wet and fatty and they will oblige on your request .Tge droewsors is just killer its perfect .Now there pies are on another level I been around the world and have not found a better pie and including the UK aswell .Its got a fluffy crispy scrumptious crust you can taste the butter in it .The fillings are out of this world I am a curry snob and all there curry fillings like lamb,chicken or beef are tge best ingredients. The owner just a down to earth guy likes racing his cars and feeding people just all round good guy .

We originally stopped by Meal in a Pie for frozen Boerewors but couldn’t resist trying their fresh pies—and we’re so glad we did! We grabbed a lamb curry, shepherd’s pie, and beef sausage roll. The pie crust was honestly the best I’ve ever had: buttery, flaky, and perfectly baked. The fillings were plentiful, flavorful, and made with high-quality ingredients. The chicken curry pie was especially delicious—the seasoning was spot on, warm, and comforting. Both the shepherd’s pie and beef sausage roll had rich, high-quality beef that tasted homemade and fresh. Everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor. On top of the great food, the gentleman who assisted us was kind and welcoming. Overall, this is a hidden gem worth visiting. Highly recommend—5 stars!

Got some frozen pies for holiday gifts and grabbed a lamb curry pie for myself. Oh. My. Goodness. Buttery flaky crust beyond good and the curry was very delicious. And fast - it’s right there waiting under the hot lamps - even by the time I got it home it was still quite hot. This has to go into rotation for sure 😍

Been eyeing this place for a while, as I've never been to a South African focused shop nor have I had the meal in a pie cuisine. The shop keeper was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I got the Shepherds Pie and Beefsteak Pie. I also picked up some sausage roll jerky and oat biscuit crackers/cookies? Both pies were amazing. The pastry was solid and tasted so good!!!! Meats were delicious and had a terrific texture and flavors. The jerky was interesting. It had a good outer texture but the inside was almost creamy. Mind u this is sausage jerky, not mainstream American style. But it tasted good. The biscuit/cookie/crackers thing came in a box and is so addicting. I couldn't put them down. Place is a small market. Cool South African cuisine, delicious meat pies. Very easy to find and get to. Plenty of parking out front and in back.

This place offers some of the most unique and delicious dishes from around the world. Every time I visit, I feel transported somewhere else, and the taste of their yummy pies is truly unforgettable.

Wow they know how to make a good meat pie! I had the lamb pasty - very delicious on every level. They have lots packed in a relatively small shop, I wish I could try it all! A few South African drinks to choose from in the fridge as well. I’ll be back to try the other pies and sausage roll!

Meal in a pie ... more like LOVE in a pie! A friend of mine recommended this spot to me and I completely understand why he loves it so much! I should've came months ago when he told me because I've been missing out. My boyfriend and I popped in on a Sunday shortly after they opened and were immediately greeted by a smiling, friendly woman wearing a Florida Panthers (Go Cats!) shirt so I already knew I was going to enjoy this place. The inside is super clean, organized and really easy to order. They have some tables outside, however we were planning on eating them down by the beach. As we stood there trying to decide which pies we wanted, she was sooo patient with us. Then, along came another smiling, friendly gentleman and I asked them both for help picking my third pie because I simply couldn't decide. We went with the chicken curry, lamb curry and beef steak (having to refrain myself from buying more)! Holy molyyyyyy these pies are beyondddd delicious. This is probably the only time I'll admit that the more crumbs I had on my shirt, the better! I have never tasted a more flaky, buttery, perfectly baked pastry like that in my life! The filling inside of each pie was fresh, hot, and absolutely made with LOVE! Both the chicken and lamb meat were sooo tender it made it so easy to enjoy; each bite we kept saying to each other: "wow!! this is good!!!" I'm kicking myself for not going back for more on my way home, but I cannot wait to visit again and SOON. This spot is truly one of a kind and I'll be thinking about these pies until I get back over there to try more of the options they have. I will be recommending this spot to any person I get the chance to tell! Yum yum yum!

Found this place on google a few weeks ago and today we were able to come in for a quick lunch. The curry chicken and beef steak meat pies were delicious! The crust was buttery and flaky and the filling was plentiful and flavorful! We are definitely going back to try the other pies - there were so many. The staff is also so friendly. I told them it was our first time there so the young lady behind the counter walked us through the pies, pointed out some South African sodas to have with our pies and told us about Biltong, South Africa's similar version to beef jerky. She told us people drove hours for their in-house made Biltong so we got a small bag to snack on. I can see how the texture could be similar to beef jerky but it definitely tastes more meat-y and fresh/natural. It's an interesting taste to get used to, but it's still pretty good. They also sell some pantry items and South African candies (which he bought a bunch of). Overall, great cozy mom and pop shop which deserves support! We'll be back!

Went during my lunch break to try a meal in a pie. What a great spot. Delicious flaky and filling. Service was quick and friendly. So many delicious choices. I tried the lamb curry and was very pleased. They are a grab and go place with great pie choices and cold drinks in cans. I will definitely return to try all their different flavored pies.

I love Meal In A Pie! All of my trips to South Florida must include trips here. My favorite is the spinach and feta. I have also enjoyed the lamb curry, chicken curry, lentil bobotie and sausage rolls.

Ommg these are little savory heavens in your mouth!!! I had this place bookmarked for years and I finally got a chance to stop by! It's a small little shop. You have options to buy them hot or cold. There is a deal if you buy more than 6 frozen ones. You will fill out the paper and keep the paper cuz each symbol on the pastry tells you which one is which and the cooking instructions. Boy I did not know they are big!! I have should look at the photos ahead of time. I ordered 1 hot bobotie and 1 hot spinach and feta pastry. Bobotie has some interesting spices and favors. I don't know how to describe it. One of their popular flavors! Spinach and feta is really good. Melts in your mouth! Also, when they stated it's hot, it's really hot. Try not to burn your mouth! I ordered some frozen ones to go and I haven't try them yet but I'm so excited! The lady told me to bake them on a baking sheet or something like that. It works better that way and aluminum foil would not work. It will will peel or get stuck. I do see they do catering and sell other things. Maybe I'll buy some of their other stuff like the sauces next time. Definitely give this place a try!

Is really hard to find South African anything so I lived in South Africa for a little while for work and obviously certain foods were staples or comfort foods pies are pretty much what you can compare to a pastel since is puff pastry, this place feels as if you are having them in the market in South Africa they are hot soft and flaky I had the beef the sausage I also purchased some tea which was amazing and juice the prices were a bit over what I expected but it is still doable if it's a one in a while deal.

Their pies are delicious. The frozen ones come with good instructions for baking them at home and come out delicious. Their biltong is amazing, and by the time I get back home I usually will have eaten half of the bag :-)

There's nothing better than a Meal in a Pie! The food here litterally describes the name of the place. The portions are just as big as the containers itself. I'm disappointed that I never tried this sooner. I've been missing out on their pies all these years. Today I finally decided to stop by. The shop is small and stocked with dried goodies besides the pies they sell. Its nice to have other types of snacks offered that differ from the norm. As I walked in I was greeted with a lovely smile and told them it was my first time there. The person helping me was patient and explained every single pie in detail. They only had a few options available because everything was practically sold out. But the one's I wanted were already at the window. I asked for the pepper beef steak, curried chicken, and the pork sausage roll. I was told that after the afternoon rush, it is best to call and place your order 40 minutes ahead of time so they can prepare your pies if your eating them right after you pick them up. Otherwise they have frozen options where you can take them home and heat them up yourself. Its definitely a great option for lazy days when you don't want to drive. So upon taking my first bite of the peppered beefsteak pie I was astonished by the perfectly balanced flavors that hit my tastebuds. The texture of the beef was tender and the crust was flaky with a ton of delicious buttery layers. The pie was served HOT. So watch out for that first bite! The second pie I tried was the curry chicken. I honestly can't tell you which one I love more. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and the flavors of the spices left a nice aromatic aftertaste. The last thing I tried was the pork sausage roll. It was tasty and simple. The only thing I felt like it was missing, is hot sauce. The canned sparkling apple soda was sweet and tart. Personally, it was on the sweet side for me. The flavor tasted like candy green apples. This place is the go to place for a comfort meal on the go. There's no in harm in trying. Unless you become extremely addicted. Lol Life is to short! So don't miss out like me for not trying Meal in a Pie sooner. They won't dissapoint.

It brings me great pleasure to write this 5-star review. I used to live within walking distance of Meal in a Pie for many years when I lived off Floranada just south of Commercial and west of Federal Highway. During that time, I would pop in often for a Bobotie Meat Pie. These are life changing lt delicious, and such a unique combination of spices and chutney that it is probably unlike anything you've ever had. The flaky crust, mild spice of the curry, sweetness of the chutney. So good. I crave these all the time now that I live roughly 15 miles away. Meal in a Pie is a counter service takeout spot with a small market of good from across the Atlantic. The owner and operator has brought his culinary roots from South Africa and delivers with every item. 12 flavors of meat pies and 2 styles of sausage roll are available, either served hot and fresh or frozen for at home preparation. These are a little pricier than you might think, but it is worth it! They are stuffed with meat, huge, and delicious. All the styles I've tried are excellent, with my favorites being Shepherd's Pie, Chicken Curry, Chicken, and Beef Curry, but my all time favorite is the Bobotie. Hot pies are $7.59. Frozen pies are $6.59. Sausage rolls are $4.77. You can get a 4-pack of rolls for $12.99 or a half dozen pies for $34.80, or $5.80 each for any number more than that. These cook up at home as perfectly as in the store. Usually there is limited selection on display as they insist to sell them hot and fresh. However, calling before you come will result in them making any variety you want to be ready when you get there. My favorite part about the multicultural community in South Florida is enjoying the culinary delights of many places. Come try South Africa's version of an empanada/patty/samosa/peroshki/meat pie.

One is too little and two is too much; what a predicament did I find myself in yesterday. I've been meaning to check out Meal in a Pie for ages now and I can finally say I have. Checking it off the list and marking it with an asterisk meaning must visit again soon. Agenda talk irrelevant, my boyfriend and I stopped by on our way back to Miami. Parking was limited, but we got a space. Went inside and despite reading reviews, I was surprised at how small the place was. Do not let that deter you though. There are at least ten or so seats available if you want to eat there. You have two options. You can either eat there and enjoy freshly made pies or you can get them to go. If you take them to go, you get them frozen and you have to bake them per the instructions they have on their flyer. Not a bad deal if you are in a rush; they have a special going on for six frozen pies at $29.99. There must be at least a dozen flavors. Not to mention that they have sausage rolls, chocolates, and a whole lot of drinks and sauces you can also buy. Owner, or who I think is the owner, is ridiculously pleasant. He let us eat first and then he charged us. I guess he must have known we would fall in love with the decadent flavors and would end up ordering more. We tried: -Spinach and feta pie: Got the last warm one. Had I ordered it and they hadn't had it, it would have taken about half an hour to bake. Anyway, this vegetarian pie was downright delicious. Cheesy and no skimping on the spinach. Loved. -Chicken curry pie: Boyfriend ordered this one. Since we both shared pieces of each other's respective pies, I had a piece and I enjoyed this so much with its tangy Indian flavors that I ordered a second one for myself. Ended up having to take it home, but who cares? More fun in the long run! -Sausage roll: Given that one pie wasn't enough for either of us, boyfriend who had been eyeing this, opted to get one, and well, he couldn't finish it, but he kept raving about its amazingness. I was stuffed by this point and abstained. We definitely want to go back and try some of the other flavors, particularly one of the meat ones. My boyfriend loved the sausage roll so much that it really did get us wondering about the meat pies. At any rate, everything we tried was spot on and oh so savory. Hmm, one last little tidbit - apparently if you call about 30-35 minutes ahead, they can start baking your pies, so if you're in a rush and/or don't want to wait and/or doing the baking yourself, this is a definite must!

If you are familiar with South African treats and food items then this is where you come to get your fix. I can't come here to often otherwise I would be broke. But when I do come here I go all out, and it feels like I am back home and everything in the store reminds me of the sweets I used to eat when I was a kid . The Biltong, Droewors and boereworse taste just like it does back home, and If you eat meat I would recommend you come try the South African foods along with some of their spices they have for sale. Recently introduced to Meal in A Pie , and let me say, it is everything you'd want a meal in a pie to be. Delicious, flaky, tasty, easy to eat, delicious. We tried a few varieties and looking forward to trying each one. They sell freezer pies which are very simple to prepare and keeps well In the freezer.

Great pies to take home and enjoy. I get a variety of frozen pies....pie one in the oven along with a small side salad and you have a delicious meal.

Oh my god! Okay... I now get all the kudos about this place. I think I've found a last meal contender. As many times as I've been to doctors nearby, holy cross, and mom's kitchen (after fasting blood tests), I've never turned off Floranada (45th) onto 20th avenue... In fact, I was originally thinking this place was in the more industrial area, near prospect, and wasn't sure of the neighborhood. Anyone worried, should not be. You're on the cusp of a good residential area and right near US 1/Federal Hwy. There is street parking right out front. On an early Tuesday, I was the only customer except for the gal sitting at the one table outside checking her emails. I decided on take out and got one chicken curry and one shepherds pie. As I was driving the smell of the curry wafted over, and I just had to open the box and tear off a corner. The pastry is so light and flaky it just melts in your mouth. I spent the next two traffic lights, picking out crumbs from my hair and off my clothes! When I got home I decided to try a piece of each pie. The chicken curry was packed with shredded chicken, peas and carrots all in a slightly spicy but very aromatic curry sauce. The shepherds pie is ground meat and peas and carrots in a touch of sauce layered with creamy mashed potatoes. Both are in that flaky crust. I decided I like the curry chicken one slightly better as there was more meat. You have to be a curry lover however to appreciate how good a flavor it is. On the other hand, maybe I need to try another taste of the shepherds pie. No maybe some more of the curry? Will I be able to leave a bit for my husband to taste? Shhhh.... don't tell him.

This is a friendly little authentic South African specialty store. They have an array of imports available for sale on top of freshly made savory pastries but you have to show up early before they are sold out. They also make droewors and biltong (beef jerked) and have fresh boerewors (sausage). They have some specialty candies at the register and some sodas in the cooler. The guy behind was really friendly and helpful. If you're looking for something ethnic or if you're a native, stop on by.

Friday before Carnival I pick up a friend that decided to risk a hurricane to come party in Miami. She touches down and we hear soca music and her stomach growl. I laugh til tears threaten to fall from my eyes and check my bookmarks. My friend is originally from Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. When I tell her we are going to an African grocery store she's already waiting to criticize the place. Tiny shop that's been here for nearly 20 years supplying the area with African groceries and delicious bakery meals in a pies. With a Sparletta on the side of her pie, she had no complaints - besides some of the pies had already sold out. This seems to be common because a few others popped up behind us after we brought all their hot stuff. They all said, "I knew I should have called ahead." While I was snapchatting my Feta and Spinach, the only no meat option that was available hot, my friend has already started eating her pie. They reminded me a lot like Haitian patties, I was just shocked how big these things were. They are truly a meal in a pie. She took a bite of her meat and kidney and nearly burned herself. Even though we grabbed the last of the hot pies, those things were super fresh! We each grabbed two more frozen pies. As he packed up our items I checked out the products of this interesting store. Friend said they have a nice variety but thought the prices were marked up. We packed away our pies in a cooler in the trunk and hit the beach. After eating a pie all you want to do is lounge somewhere. They had 3 veggie options available. I tried the spinach/feta hot in house - 5 star! Flaky, soft, creamy, plenty of spinach and equal amounts of cheese. Several hours later I made the veggie curry. I followed the directions on the card and it came out perfect - 5 star delicious! The following Monday I make the lentil bobotie - 3 stars. That last one was kind of a disappointment. Friend got the traditional bobotie and she bit into her pie and I could smell the heat and spices. She hadn't been home in over 5 years but as she ate she started telling me stories or the last time she visited. But when I bit into the coconut curry lentil bobotie - it was just okay. It smelled awesome - but the flavors still felt muted. I thought I had left the best for last. I'm still a fan so I must be back.

Lucky Friday the 14th as I was working by Sample Rd in Pompano and Lighthouse Point and drove the 5.7 miles down to this authentic South African gem. I was fortunate to be in South Africa in the early 2000's and that was the last time I had a hot pie or pastie. None were close to or as good as the ones at Meal in a Pie. My recollection of ones I had eaten in the UK were that they were just cold and blah. What makes the hot, fresh and delicious pies that come straight out of the oven even more desirable and extra special is the sheer love with which they are prepared and served by the very nice and sweet owners and their wonderful employee named Josue from Venezuela. This is a beautiful establishment that oozes with warmth. I walked in at 1:15 pm and did not want to leave. Love the simple yet beautiful display of genuine South African goodies and groceries that magically transports you 8000 miles East. It is $5.99 for a hot pie and here are the choices: Beefsteak Beef Curry Bobotie Chicken Chicken Curry ( ordered and enjoyed at the location) Lamb Pasty Lamb Curry Steak and Kidney Shepherd's Pie Spinach and Feta ( got one to go) Vegetable Curry ( also packed a hot one) Lentil Bobotie( thank you may I have another..!) Sausage Roll The other option is to take the frozen pies home and heat them in a conventional oven with specific instructions for about a half an hour. No microwaving!! The special is get 6 for $30!! They are open daily;M to F 10-6 , Sat 10-5 and Sun 12-3. Josue recommended I call ahead and place the order to avoid any wait in the future. Tel # 954-202-9118. Love the beautiful, flaky and crispy crust. This was a very filling and satisfying pie. It was pretty big and I was stuffed after eating just half. By the bye, this pie was piping " HOT" as in I cut it into two and took my time loving it and enjoying it. Very relaxed and chill vibe with no pressure and no worries. Love this customer who came in and ordered the beef curry pie to stay. He then purchased a bottle of the hot mango chutney and popped it open pouring it over his gorgeous pie. It smelled divine!! They do a lot of take out here. They do accept credit cards. There is limited seating inside with 3 chairs, a small 3 by 3 table and 6 stools. The space may be tight for a large group. There are a few parking spots right in front of the store. Meal in a Pie brought a tear to my eye. Thank you to all the great Yelpers who rightfully recommended this gorgeous place tucked away just west of Federal Hwy and about a half a mile south of Commercial Blvd.

The pies here are excellent. I called in advance to make sure they had steak and kidney pies available. I left with two pies and a 1/4 lb of biltong. The pies were freshly baked, flakey, buttery and tasty and the biltong was perfection, just like they make it at home. Michele was lovely and it was so nice to speak to a fellow South African living in the states. Made me a little homesick. So glad I got to enjoy the amazing pies and biltong

Second time going on a Sunday. I called around 11:30a to ask if they will have steak and kidney available today, and was informed by the very kind lady that 2 will be hot and ready for me when they open at 12. They husband and wife that are the front face of this shop are so kind to their patrons. I saw two South African families stock up on the grocery goods + frozen pastries they have. I got the beef sausage roll + steak and kidney pie with the spicy chutney and they were both A+. Along side some gummy wines my total was around $13. And of course, I will be back again.

As I'm gobbling down the last piece of my spinach and feta pie, I'm thinking about visiting this neat bakery sooner rather than later. I'm vegetarian and had the feta and spinach pie as recommended by a young lady. Well let's just say my plan of eating half the pie was quickly voided after biting into the most delicious pie I've ever had. I'm still recovering from this foodie nirvana. I got a bottle of hot sauce and admired the curries and snacks they had for sale.

So I was dragged here and made to try a "sausage roll". I do not like sausage. Turns out a sausage roll is like the heavily seasoned meat from a Jamaican patty without the scotch bonnet pepper wrapped in a light, flaky, puff pastry. What's not to like about that?!?!? It's freaking delicious! Also had a lamb pasty, bobotie and curried lamb. Lamb pasty was better than the curry. However, the sausage roll was so flavourful that the other pastries seemed a bit bland in comparison. On their own, they are great. But if having a sausage roll, either have that last or have the others at another time. Bobotie was not my cup of tea but my husband loved it. They also have steak and kidney pies etc. Very small little spot. Pastries are available to take frozen for munching at a later time.

Well, after eyeing this place for a few months now, I was finally in the area at a time when I could stop by...and it did not disappoint. Meal in a Pie was absolutely wonderful. It's a small shop that's packed with lots of South African goodies (the woman behind the counter let me know that most items are imported directly from South Africa). Speaking of, the woman behind the counter (the only employee I saw/interacted with) was absolutely lovely. When I walked in, I let her know it was my first time and that I kind of wanted to get a little bit of everything. She was very helpful in answering all of my questions and helping me pick out a pie (I ended up picking three!). She even brought out samples of the three different types of jerky they sell, so that I could pick out my favorite. So, 10/10 service for sure. Like I said, I ordered three pies. A lamb curry, a chicken curry, and a steak and kidney pie (which I asked, "Kidney means kidney beans, right?" and the woman kindly responded, "No, it's veal kidney." Hm, "Okay, cool. I've never had that. Let's just do it!"). I could've eaten it in the store, but chose to take the pies home as I had just eaten. The woman took the time to mark all of the takeaway boxes with the names of each pie, despite each pie having a symbol baked on top to help differentiate (there's a key on the menu). By the time I got home, the pies were a little cool, so I just popped them in the air fryer for a few minutes to warm up. Cut each one in half an went to town - HOLY FLAKY, BUTTERY, CRISPY PASTRY GOODNESS. Yeah, the filling was great, but the pastry was even greater. And yeah, it turns out I love me some steak and kidney pie. So much flavor. (By the way, make sure you splurge and get that 0.39 chili sauce. It's a yummy little dip for the pieces of pastry that don't have filling!) As for the jerky I sampled - meh. The flavor of the biltong was great, yummy spicy beef. However, all three were really really tough. One of the jerky pieces was so tough I couldn't even manage to chew it, no matter how much I tried. I eventually gave up. Regardless, I bought a 1/4 pound to bring back home to my jerky-loving brother. (He also thought the flavor was great, but meat was way too tough.) In addition to the pies and jerky, I picked up some random grocery items - including some cheese puffs, spicy mayo, and candy. It's pretty cool to be able to try regional favorites from all the way across the ocean. I really wanted to order their milk tart pie (I think that's what it's called?), but they only sell the whole pie, and not by the slice. A shame. You can bet I'll be back someday.

Meal in a Pie is a rather nifty cross or combination of what is a South African condiment/accessory food shop, a South African food take out and South African bistro. It's the only place I know of to get fresh, tasty well prepared South African treats like their namesake meat pie, bobotie or some decent strips of biltong. I've been stopping here frequently over the years, not only for their meat pies but also because they seem to be the only area source for various traditional South African condiments and generally hard to find assortments of chutneys. For those who have never tried a South African meat pie with its delicious minced meats, I'd highly recommend that they do. The owner/manager is always most pleasant, not only providing good service but also a valued source of information concerning anything related to the culinary world of South African cuisine.

Amazing find! This small South African market is home to some amazing meat and vegetable pies. I tried the Bobotie and was blown away. It's a ground beef pie... Light curry flavor and slightly sweet - amazing! Besides the small market, they really only sell their delicious pies and sausage rolls. MUST try! I will definitely be back and plan on buying a bunch of their frozen pies to make at home.

Another checkmark on my Yelp's 10 Firsts. Was NOT disappointed. On the way to a meeting with a very important sponsor, I stopped in here to pick up some treats. I couldn't decide on what to get - so I got a lot. Like, way too many haha. I got the following pies: Bobotie - the most "traditional" one. It's made with minced meat and has a nice flavor. Shepard's pie - my favorite. Basically shepard's pie inside a flaky crust. Delicious. Ate this in the car - on the way to the meeting. Don't judge. Beef - AMAZING. Nice chunks of steak, the seasoning was on point (and different than anything I've ever had). Chicken - Didn't try this one by everyone at the table LOVED it. And I got two rolls: Beef - Didn't try this one. It made it to the office of my sponsor though, so I hope they enjoyed it behind closed doors. Pork Sausage - Amazing. Reminded me of a "cold meat" dish that Cubans have. Delicious. I will note: The pies are enough for 1 person to have a pretty good meal. If it's lunch you can have it and be pretty full, especially the more hearty ones. Maybe a pie and a roll will keep you stuffed till dinner. The gentleman that helped me out - I assume is the owner - was SUPER nice. He was full of energy, explained all the pies for me and worked super fast to get everything packaged up for me. Even threw in extra forks and knives for me - he assumed correctly I wasn't going to eat that all by myself. It's a small place - so you will likely want to take it to go. But they do have a couple of tables (and by that I mean like 3 tables) for you to sit and eat. Overall a fantastic little gem. I look forward to coming back and trying some more of their options in the future!

This is one of those places we've tried to check out on a number of occasions but for some reason or another didn't make it - mostly because we got there and they were closed. They're tucked into a small strip mall off of Florinada, around the corner from Smitty's Butcher shop, and they're only open during the day. This past Thursday, however, we managed our act together and made it there for lunch - and I'm so glad we did! Their eponymous meals-in-a-pie are on display in a hot case and they're nothing like the Jamaican meat patties you might expect to find living in South Florida. To start with they're wrapped in a delicious light, flaky crust, somewhere between a really good croissant and phyllo dough. They come in a variety of flavors ranging from beef, chicken, lamb, shepherd's pie and vegetable, and many have a curry version as well, which lends a lot of flavor and some spicy goodness. I elected to try the chicken curry pie and it was excellent. It was served hot - so hot that some caution was indicated. My first bite confirmed that I would be back. It was rich, savory and really, really good! My companion elected to go with the lamb pasty, as recent oral surgery had precluded the spicy option. She gave an enthusiastic thumbs up as well. I was still a little hungry - and a lot curious, so we split a pork sausage roll. The sausage was very rich and savory, though I found it a bit subtle after the curry - I'm sure it would stand on it's own merits otherwise. They also have a variety of South African canned sodas for you to enjoy with your meal, or if you're not feeling adventurous they have a good selection of American sodas as well. There are also a variety of South African groceries comprising what I assume are some the the staples expatriate South Africans might crave - curries, chutneys and other sundry items... and candy! I can't wait to go back and try some of the other goodies on offer!

I've had Meal in A Pie on my radar forever, but somehow put it on my "take-out" only list, and deemed it too far away to pick up lunch from. When I started drafting this year's 10 new places to try, Meal in A Pie was pretty high on my list, and I vowed to make time to go there. First off, it's actually closer to my office than I thought, and secondly, they do have seating room for about 10 people, so it's possible to eat in here. Luckily I brought Brent M. with me, so I was able to try quite a few options! The space itself is set up as a little market. Tons of South African food products for sale, and of course their freshly made "pies". There were about 8? different "pie" options and we figured splitting 3 different ones would give us some good variety without going too overboard. The guy at the counter was happy to explain all the flavors to us and helped us setting on our choices - I should note, these "pies" are more like empanadas in a flakier dough. A bit messy to eat, you'll surely end up with pastry crumbs all over yourself, but damn delicious! STEAK AND KIDNEY - a nice "hearty" option. Perhaps my least favorite of the three, but still delicious! LENTIL - this was my favorite by far. The coconut in the curry really set it apart. Would eat this weekly! CHICKEN CURRY - great flavor, though mentally I block things that are chicken. I'd definitely try a different curried meat next time! And since no South African meal is complete without BILTONG, I insisted we get 1/4lb to try. This was my first time trying this "jerky" and although I found the texture to be different, in a good way, the spices weren't quite my cup of tea. Not bad, just not something I'd rush back for....so luckily I'll be rushing back for the lentil pie instead. Great experience, from the space, the food, and the service!! Quite an affordable lunch option too, as one pie really is a good sized portion and costs about ~$7.

What an awesome little place tucked away in ft lauderdale. A couple doors down from a little pub, this is the perfect spot to grab drinks and snacks for the game.. but an even better idea would be to go for their pastries. I mean.. they are called meal in a pie for a reason. When we walked in we were nicely greeted by the person behind the counter who patiently explained the pies and even gave some recommendations on cools candies. By the time we got there everything was almost cleared out. Only two items remained: sausage roll and some type of lamb curry or beef curry pie. So we decided to try one of each. Admittedly, the pastries were a little bit more expensive than I anticipated but you seem to forget about price when you bite into them. They were truly perfect pastries. So flaky and crisp. And you'd expect the filling to be dry but it wasn't at all! The filling was really moist and delicious. Everything combined was so flavorful and I can't wait to try their other pies! My favorite was the sausage roll but I would get both items again in a heartbeat. I really enjoyed this place. It is definitely a place to take your food to go because they are no tables. All in all it was a fantastic experience. The service was great and the food was even better. Can't wait to come back!

Definitely check this place out! Not only a local market of imported curries, spices, soups etc but the "meals in a pie" are flaky authentic and delicious! Staff was great, friendly and helpful and you can even buy them frozen to make at home!

OMG I love this place, it's a little South African bakery/market with about 95% of the products imported from South Africa. I absolutely love the pies, and trust me you are cheating yourself if you do not eat the pies smothered with the chutney. They have these 100% juice seltzer like drinks, I cannot remember the name but their delicious, pricey but delicious. They have a couple of tables if you want to eat in, but outside of that is really a take out joint.

My roommate text me one day pics from her lunch at meal in a pie to rub it in how amazing it was, then redeemed herself by telling me she was bringing me home a surprise. I thought it was one of the delicious pie's I got a picture of but I was wrong lol. She knows I love beef jerky and the owner here is from South Africa and he makes his own Biltong which is like beef jerky but so much better! You have to ask to get it shaved which means they fresh shave the meat into a bag when you order it. Do yourself a favor and go here and get some its frekin amazing! A few weeks later I was nearby and decided I needed to get more shaved Biltong cause I was craving it badly and one of those amazing pies I heard all about from my roommate. It was late Saturday afternoon so no one was there. First, I spotted some of their hot sauces so I grabbed a few of those (I love hot sauce). Then I decided to go with the shepherd's pie pie because it reminded me a lot of the meat pies I got to eat when I was in Australia that I dearly miss. Then I got a half pound of the shaved Biltong. Everything was delicious including the hot sauces. The pie I ate on the drive home and it really hit the spot. I also snacked on the Biltong because it's addictive. The guy running the place was super nice and friendly. They also sell many European foods and candies like Cadbury chocolates that again I fell in love with when I was in Australia so it's good to know I can get my fix of those snack here to and not always go to the specialty candy store. Also worth mentioning they sell their pies frozen too so you can take them home and heat them up fresh when you want them.

Holy cow, I found another hidden gem! Why do I always live half an hour from this place? It could be worse I guess. Not the greatest neighborhood, but this establishment itself is clean inside and out. Super friendly service! They really go above and beyond to help you, make sure you know how to prep it if you bought a frozen one, and make sure you know how to read the markings on it since they're labeled with a pastry marking instead of a word. We got 2 chicken, 2 shephards, and 2 spinach & feta pies, as well a sausage roll (ate that before the picture). Holy crap, to die for! Such amazing flavors and freshness. I wish I bought 5 sausage rolls. My mother, who doesnt like sausage, said it was amazing! Very fair prices, very awesome food, and very nice people. I can't wait to come back!

Savory Pie EXPERT. If there ever was such a thing, surely the owner would win the title. Before yesterday I never had a meat pie,or any pie that wasn't a dessert, in my entire life. Abuelo insisted we grab one to have for dinner later because this place was "The best" I'm only down here visiting so I don't have an oven in my hotel, so I got a hot spinach and feta pie and figured I'd eat it cold later since it was strongly advised against reheating in the microwave. Let me tell you--the owner said it was best fresh and hot, and just to try it as he intended I took a bite: That was the moment. It was SO good I ended up eating it all. Absolutely stunning. The flaking, delicate and crisp crust was perfectly done to that light, golden color. So much flavor in the pie itself. My Abuelo got a frozen pie for himself to enjoy later: His favorite is the lamb. Don't let the curry scare you, it's coconut curry so it's not crazy spicy at all. He has been coming here for years and says it hasn't changed one bit--- consistently delicious with variety and service is always helpful as well as to the point. You may walk out of here with an array of delicious pies for home; a cool feature is the symbols on top of the pies correlate with their menu. So you know which is which when you pull them out of the freezer. Definitely a must- go. I wish we had one of these in Jax!

Really good. We walked from the Las Olas Muni Marina for some of our most favorite South African treats. We met Rob and got some delicious pies. So flaky and light. We also got some slabs of Biltong for back on the boat. We highly recommend. Next time we are in town we will certainly come here.

Canada is a beautiful progressive country, but it does have it's hiccups. Believe it or not when I was 6 years old and about 10 years old in Oshawa and Toronto respectively I was chased by the Ku Klux Klan(KKK) or Ku Klux Klan wannabe's, but that's another story. So as a young adult when I decided to visit South Africa just two years after apartheid fell in 94', I really had no idea what to expect or see. The culinary history of South Africa is quite rich and unique in that it's a combination of the cuisines of the Bantu cultures, British, Dutch, Indonesian (who were brought to South Africa as slaves by the Dutch) and the east Indians( who were brought to South Africa as slaves by the British). I was staying in an affluent suburb of Johannesburg called Sandton, but I also visited the "Black" Townships of Soweto and Alexandra. I was still able to see some remnants of the horrors of South African apartheid before it was white washed by the ANC, but I also experienced a rich culture of diverse friendly people along with their delicious cuisine. But after couple of try's the buttery-ness didn't bother me anymore. To really enhance your pie ask them to give you a side of their spicy and lightly sweet chutney. The owner and workers are very friendly, and the customer service is super. ++ it's a good idea to call ahead and have them put your particular pies in the oven 30 minutes before arrival.

This is my first time here and the food is amazing. The people in the store were nice and greeting when I walked in. Everything was neat and beautiful. Highly recommend

I'm a cake person, but you can't have a meal in a cake. Pies take that cake. I'm fortunate that Meal in a Pie is around the corner from my home/office and makes for a perfect afternoon lunch escape, especially since walking into the tiny shop hints of many of the typical African convenience stores I've come across in my travels. I agree that one is too many and two is too much, unfortunately rather than take the natural compromise of one pie and one roll, I can't turn down the second pie and usually end up worse for wear after lunch unable to stop when I should. Clearly that's my fault and the ideal is to share w/ another person or really I should stop being so fat and just eat one at a time and deal with it. Anyhow, the pies are fresh, flaky, sumptuous and full of flavor and texture as others have mentioned. The pies offer a slightly unique hybrid twist to similar Mediterranean, Jamaican and English pastries/pies/patties. My favorite is the spinach and feta (how can you mess those two up?) The balance b/w gooey cheese, freshish? spinach and buttery crust is perfect. Many people raved about the chicken curry pie, but I tried it once and found it to be just pretty good and nothing special. I really enjoyed the shepherds pie as well. Brings a nice mix of my mum's home cooking, crisp fall London afternoons, and just a little bit something else. Parking is limited, but you don't need to be there that long. Takeout is best and the staff is super friendly. They also sell some South African foods, snacks and other goods for expats missing home or travelers trying to relieve some travel memories. Such a fun and unique little place in my hood, will return regularly!
