Look Inside Meantime, a New Beer Bar in Detroit’s Cass Corridor Neighborhood | Eater Detroit

"Opened in the former 8 Degrees Plato space (which closed in December 2024), this new bar from hospitality veterans Erik Annonson, Elliot Hoffman and Brittney Carnahan is designed as a relaxed spot where patrons can pop in for a single drink or linger for hours. The team reimagined the 2,400-square-foot room with design work by Danny Jacobs, repurposing materials from the previous tenant—former baker’s racks and bleacher wood—as drink rails, and replacing communal benches with a couch and individual chairs; large front windows lift open to blur indoor and patio seating. The original beer cooler remains stocked with local packaged brews, classics like Coors Banquet, wine, cider and nonalcoholic options. Two side-pull faucets (a nod to an originally planned Side Pull Brewery) serve a creamy, traditionally poured Czech-style lager that the bar commissioned from Hamtramck’s Florian East Lagers & Alesto as its house beer; it can be enjoyed straight, paired with a shot of Old Grand-Dad in custom Pewabic Pottery shot glasses, or as a mlíko shot—a dense, foamy Czech-style pour meant to be consumed in one go. While no kitchen is operated on-site, rotating pop-ups (opening weekend featured Bao Chicka Bao Bao and Gajiza Dumplins) are regular, and guests may also bring outside food. Regulars can join a “pal” membership for $80/year for perks including discounts on the house lager and lager-and-shot combos, 15% off drafts/wine/cocktails, 25% off on Mondays, 10% off merchandise, and access to three annual member parties; after two weekends of soft service, the bar officially debuted on Friday, May 23." - Courtney Burk

Meantime, a New Beer Hub, Takes Shape in Cass Corridor | Eater Detroit

"Hospitality veterans Erik Annonson and Elliot Hoffman, alongside partner Brittney Carnahan, are set to take over the location and reopen it under a new iteration that reflects their concept: “a nebulous amount of time where patrons can choose to hang out for just one drink or stay for many.” Annonson and Hoffman bring decades of industry experience — most recently at Cøllect and Eastern Market Brewing Co. — and had originally planned to open a brewery under the name Side Pull Beer Company before pausing those plans to take this space. Hoffman said, “So much of what we wanted to do, for so long, was open a brewery,” and added, “And I think, even though we’re so passionate about that side of it, so much of us wanting to produce beer was about creating something to bring people together. It’s really about beer being a conduit of the human interaction and conversation, and we’re really focused on the conversations that go deep into the night.” Hoffman also noted that the old bottle-shop-plus-bar format already aligned with their approach: “It was an epicenter for the craft beer community, and we don’t take that lightly. It’s something we’re excited to be a part of and the main reason we were drawn to it. It’s also in the community we wanted to be a part of, though granted we’re going to put our own fingerprints on it and spin to it, but it’s a humbling experience to carry on what was started.” The team is reimagining some original brewery ideas for the new space, including installing a side pull faucet; “This type of faucet is commonly used to control the flow of beer, creating a creamy head, which is the traditional way to serve and enjoy a Czech pilsner.” They plan to have a house Czech-style lager brewed in collaboration with a Hamtramck partner (the recipe was initially intended to be the flagship label at their original brewery). Tentative plans aim to open to the public in early April, and the brew will be previewed at the partner brewery on Monday, March 10; former members of the prior shop’s membership program are being asked to watch their email for details on transitioning memberships. Annonson reflected on the broader industry context: “We’ve gone through different eras in the beer industry. From budding to IBU wars, the pastry stout, the smoothie-bath, and now the lager evolution, alongside a dip in the overall industry. You never know what the next step will be, and with beer, you’ve got to constantly be excited about it. Even if you’re just figuring out how to survive in craft beer.”" - Courtney Burk

Meantime offers a bespoken experience for the serious beer aficionado & creative cocktails while still having a cheap coors on deck for the casual. A Sleek n Simple design on historic bones with everything from barstools to my favorite seat- the plush couch in the living room area beside the huge glass panels that open up allowing in city energy & air. A stone's throw from LCA for a drink b4 the puck drops or music events. Parking can be daunting during special events but there's decent access to metered street parking(get the app) n parking lots around. Lots of regulars stop in & also great for couples & 1st dates. Best for last!! Meantime had a big beer mug to fill in replacing the former 8° plato beerstore; Meantime delivered chill and elevated. A kicka$$ crew, offers 2 Rotating hand pulled beers(MUST TRY) big ABV stouts(my 🍺🖤) amongst the best from MI to Germany, food pop-ups, big TV to watch games and cool merch. Flowers throughout. May Meantime go for a Longg Time ✌️

Nice to see this location open again. Well curated local draft list, shockingly good wine, and cocktails. Good selection of cold to-go beer and seltzer as well. Appreciate the accommodation for our large group, including kids and dogs. Staff were all friendly and attentive. Had a great experience. Seems like a solid spot to pregame before Masonic or LCA close by.

Clean and nice location. If there was a fast casual bar type, this would be it. Most drinks are in a cooler and you grab and pay. It gives you a little more selection. You can bring in your own food too.

I mean the place is amazing. Drinks are great, atmosphere is the best. One of the owners is a short guy. But super cute. I bet his brother is even better looking.

Love this space and the people who run it. Elliot & Erik are not only exceptionally knowledgeable about beer, but they are also experts in communicating with people. The perfect combo of quality and hospitality. A must if you’re looking for a pre/post hang in downtown Detroit event.

Great new bar with excellent service. The place definitely has a community centered vibe - everyone we ran into was friendly and inclusive. Not to mention a well curated selection of beers, cocktails, and wine. Didn’t get the food pop up but that looked amazing too.

Yelp
Meantime filling the former 8 Plato Beer Company space, you can see the ghost mural on the interior wall. Halfway between Wayne State and Downtown, Meantime is another placwe to get a beer. Beer prices are quite competitive and the Florian East Czech Pils is great (even better in warm weather). Cocktail menu is limited. The daiquiri price seems a little steep. 14 bucks for rum, lime, and simple sugar. Like to see a top shelf rum name listed on the menu. In front they have a table for food/catering, uncertain if this is for the opening weekend or will be regular occurrence. All in all love having another place to drink near Wayne State and in Midtown.
