Chapel Hill Institution Mediterranean Deli Damaged by Fire | Eater Carolinas

"A rooftop fire on Saturday, July 22 badly damaged the Mediterranean Deli, Bakery, and Catering (known locally as “Med Deli”), with Chapel Hill firefighters taking more than three hours to extinguish the smoke and flames and heavy damage reported to the Franklin Street establishment. Opened in 1991 by Jamil Kadoura, the deli has long been a staple for University of North Carolina students, staff, and faculty and is celebrated for affordable falafel, baba ghanoush, and gyros as well as its welcoming atmosphere and the generosity of Kadoura and his staff. In the wake of the fire a GoFundMe was created and had raised over $93,000 by Monday morning to help employees, and Kadoura posted on the Med Deli Facebook page thanking the community, confirming everyone is okay, asking for privacy, and promising updates about the future; the source of the fire is under investigation." - Erin Perkins

Best Affordable Food in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Triangle | Eater Carolinas

"Med Deli is part grocery store, part deli/bakery, part restaurant. All the pita sandwiches (like falafel, baba ghanoush, chicken salad, and more) are in the $8 to $12 range, as are the gyros and shawarma. A two-item sampler platter from the packed-to-the-gills deli case plus pita bread rings in at $10.50, and for just a couple bucks more the house platters come with a choice of meat (or falafel), two vegetarian sides, and pita." - Matt Lardie

Mediterranean Deli - Review - Chapel Hill - North Carolina - The Infatuation

"Most of Franklin Street is quiet during weekdays while students are in class, but Med Deli’s daily lunch rush is the exception. Every afternoon, dozens of people crowd in front of packed deli cases and order from a huge menu of sandwiches, platters, and pre-made salads. Pick a few mezze from the cold counter and make a plate, or get falafel or kebobs in a pita, or over rice. This is a great place for vegetarians but it works for just about anyone. Get your lunch to-go and eat on UNC’s Lower Quad or drive ten minutes and sit on rocking chairs at the botanical gardens. Or skip the crowd entirely and head in for a sit-down dinner." - Christine Byrne

A Sunday lunch, there's a short wait at the queue line, about 10 minutes or so outside. This place reopened recently and was featured in local news, and definitely has some buzz. Ordered two mix platters of Gyro & Chicken with a choice of 2 sides. Feels like to many choices for the sides... I had an avocado salad with feta and a chicken salad with grapes. Food is excellent, what can I say. You have a sauce station of sort, for refills. I had rose water tea, loved it; fountain drinks seem to be complimentary. Friend ordered a desert, Lemon Cello cake, said it was great. A bit loud of chatter when full. Parking can be an issue at times, there is a paid lot across the street, left of McDs. Overall, very satisfied with this meal experience, and will be back.

Largest selection of Mediterranean I've seen in one spot! Cases of delicious options. I thoroughly enjoyed my curry cabbage, stuffed grape leaves and artichoke moussaka. All for under $10!!

Probably the best mediterranean in the area. Everything is fresh and delicious, especially the spicy falafel. It is pretty crowded, but totally worth it.

Great for a quick lunch with a friend. Ths was my first visit, but it definitely will not be my last. Lots of health options to choose from. I love that they have a free olive bar! I got the gyro, with hummus and tabouli. Everything was amazing, I didn't get the chance to really enjoy as I was on the go, but I absolutely recommend.

This absolute best restaurant in Chapel Hill. Food is fresh, healthy, and absolutely delicious. So many options, you’re bound to find something you love. The renovated location is beautiful as well. I can’t recommend it enough.

Med Deli is a local favorite with its large variety of over 140 rotating deli case items including many vegan and gluten free options, brought to you at a very affordable price. For its class and location it's a good choice for fresh Mediterranean food. I'd go for the falaphal, hummus, and maybe a few of the vegetable sides which are done pretty well. Much of the food is average, underwhelming and nothing to write home about. Stear clear of the American deserts where the cheapness of the ingredients (no cheaper than your average mid tier American restaurant) is the most aparent. If I were comparing this food to your Turkish, Greek or Palesinian grandmother's cooking made with fresh whole foods it would get a D minus. But in Chapel Hill NC where people love Chipotle it's really kind of nice. All in all if you find yourself on Franklin Street and in need of a moderately healthy lunch that won't break the bank med deli is a solid choice.
