Dining Like a Local: The Best Family-Owned Restaurants and Taverns

"On sun-drenched Hvar, this long-standing family-run landmark pairs an elegant island setting with an authentic soul rooted in tradition. The menu showcases Dalmatian cooking while welcoming modern influences, from fresh fish and seafood to local dishes like Pašticada and Peka, all made with strictly local ingredients and respectful techniques. Highlights include Grdobina (monkfish with Parmesan and tomato) and a Lamb Rib in a pistachio crust, and the wine program is touted as the best on the island." - Sarah Scaparone

Mediterraneo

"A family run eatery for over 70 years, which is snuggled away close to the picturesque harbour in the very heart of Hvar old town. You will be warmly greeted with the menus and a glass of house made honey grappa! The fish dishes are popular; do choose the delightful Grdobina - monkfish, parmesan and tomato - with immense flavour, a glass of Zlatan Pošip completes the picture. A pretty large terrace is at the heart of the restaurant, floral arrangements fringe the walls. A lovely small private room is lined with some fine wines, many from the island and Croatia. Do make a reservation at they are always fully booked in season." - Michelin Inspector

Hands down the best restaurant in Hvar! Dine & Wine in the heart of Old Town. It gave me one of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had. From the 60-day dry-aged ribeye to the monkfish with polenta, every dish was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. The family-run charm, serene courtyard, and attentive staff made the experience feel truly special. If you’re in Hvar, this is an absolute must-visit!

The best dining experience we’ve had in Croatia so far. Nathalie, the host, was incredibly attentive and friendly. Even though we didn’t have a formal reservation, she went out of her way to find us a table since we had contacted her a week earlier. Throughout the evening, she made sure we were enjoying our meal and having a great experience. The food was amazing, with fresh ingredients and consistent quality throughout each course. Every detail was thoughtfully done. The courtesy local liquor, freshly baked bread, and local olive oil were delicious. The main courses were perfectly prepared, and the desserts were truly exceptional. Service was very good overall. The waitress wasn’t particularly friendly at first but warmed up by the end. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a top-notch dining experience in Hvar.

Hands down our favourite restaurant on the whole island! We dined at Mediterraneo Dine & Wine on our last night in Hvar — and honestly, we wish we had discovered it sooner. The food was probably the best we’ve had in a very long time. Everything from the service to the presentation and flavours was simply perfect. We loved it so much that we booked a lunch the next day, just before heading back to the airport in Split — it was that good! The risotto was absolute perfection — so good, in fact, we had it twice (once for dinner and again the next day for lunch). The Fillet Mignon was beautifully cooked and full of flavour. We missed out on the monkfish at dinner, so made sure to try it at lunch — and it ended up being my second favourite dish! And the dessert? Stunningly beautiful and even better in taste — a perfect end to an incredible meal. If you’re in Hvar, do not miss this place. It’s a must. Just wish we had found it on night one — we’d have been back every evening!

The greatest restaurant to dine in Hvar. Our waiter explained to us all dishes perfectly with details. The taste was perfect. The presentation of dishes were excellent and the plates, the texture and shapes amazing. Don’t miss desserts!

This restaurant should definitely have a Michelin star. I’ve been here on countless occasions and every time it exceeded my expectations. The staff are friendly and polite, very informed and passionate about their menu. The food is amazing, every dish is distinct but at the same time delicious. 5+

Mediterraneo Dine & Wine is exceptional. Mateo served us on our first night in Hvar, and we ended up coming back twice more—which we never do, because we like to try different places. But Mateo is that good. He’s a fantastic waiter who knows the menu inside and out, and made us feel like old friends reunited at port after a long journey. And the food? Absolutely next-level. Every dish we tried was outstanding—especially the soups and desserts. This place is a true gem, and Mateo is a credit to Hvar and Croatia. We can’t wait to come back—mostly for this restaurant, and to see one of the best waiters on the planet again.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mediterraneo in Hvar was, without doubt, the best dining experience of our stay —so good that we returned for our last night on the island. From Nathalie’s warm welcome to Karlo’s impeccable service, everything felt more than a dinner; it felt like a memory being created. The menu is Dalmatian cuisine at its finest: local ingredients treated with elegance and creativity. The Langoustine Buzzara was unforgettable —a true 10/10. Soups, foie gras, tartares, desserts… every dish was composed with care and flavor. The wine list is another highlight, with outstanding local whites perfectly paired thanks to Karlo’s recommendations. I even told him that, back in Argentina, we’ll be talking about the service and flavors we discovered here. Mediterraneo is not just a restaurant —it leaves a mark, a story worth carrying across oceans. For us, it is the heart of Hvar. Cheers, Matias & Glenda
