Outstanding Burgers to Try in D.C. Right Now

"Mt. Vernon Triangle’s dearly missed burger bar made a surprise comeback last fall. Ethiopian chef Elias Taddesse’s resurrected edition in Shaw specializes in smash burgers between fluffy milk bread buns. Patties are built with dry-aged beef from Maryland’s Sassafras Farm, which he grinds and blends in-house. The quartet of options, which includes the Oklahoma with cooked-in onions, are available for takeout and delivery only." - Tierney Plumb, Eater Staff

DC's New Restaurant Openings - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"We recently checked out Mélange Burger and added it to our Hit List. In the same space as Doro Soul Food, you’ll find new Ethiopian smashburger joint, Mélange Burger. The Shaw restaurant keeps it short and sweet, with four burger (including a vegetarian option) that you can customize with bacon, egg, and avocado. It’s open 11am-8pm Tuesday-Sunday for carryout and delivery." - Omnia Saed, Tristiana Hinton

The Hit List: New DC Restaurants To Try Right Now - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"You’re no Prince Akeem, but you’ll feel a little like ‘80s royalty eating at Mélange Burger. This Shaw carryout-only spot is in the same location as Doro Soul Food and has a short but sweet menu: four smashburgers with thin, crispy patties that will satisfy any fast food craving you’re having, plus a side of fries. The McDowell, based off of the restaurant in Coming To America, is the best of the bunch and is full-on special-sauce-lettuce-cheese-pickles-onions-on-a-sesame-seed-bun, but better than McDonald’s ever could. It doesn’t come with two patties, but get it that way, otherwise the toppings can be overpowering. And order ahead so you're not crammed in the tiny waiting area with everyone else who isn’t in the know." - Tristiana Hinton, Omnia Saed

My burger buddies of the world, this is it. This is our burger homeland. Do whatever you need to do to get these burgers into your mouth. Sacrifice showering to save water, stop throwing coins into wish fountains, steal lunch money from defenseless kids. It's worth it. All joking aside, this has to be the best burger in DC. It reminds me of a high end luxury version of In-N-Out (if you've ever had the pleasure of trying that). It's also reasonably priced, so you won't actually need to beat up children or skip showers. I specifically liked the "Le Royale", it's a no frills burger that pretty much anyone would love. Also tried the Oklahoma, and although I preferred the Royale, it was also really delicious. I'll go for the McDowell next. I expect it to be just as great. The fries were alright, but not quite as crispy as I would have thought. I suspect we got a batch that might have been there for a bit based on the fact that they stopped taking orders right after we ordered for half an hour. It seems unlikely that they were made fresh when they knew they wouldn't be taking more orders during that time. This is of no matter though, because the burgers are so good, the fries could have been made from plastic and I wouldn't have cared. A final detail that should not go unmentioned; this is not a sit and eat place, it's to-go only, or take out. There is no dining room whatsoever.

Ordered delivery. Best burgers I've had all year!! Fresh toppings, delicious sauces (bacon jam is fire), and a wonderful crispy edged beef burger. Fries were great too. 💯 My new go to burger spot

Ordered delivery via Uber eats as soon as they were accepting orders. Everything was delicious and surprisingly still a little warm even though we live all the way out in Arlington. Going to have to come in person so we can see what it's like fresh!

I'm worried they're starting to cut corners. I really like this place, their burgers, and LOVE their fries - but on a visit this week, they served these really industrial-low-quality fries. I know because they are the exact same ones at my workplace cafeteria. That's not a good thing. Also, for delivery, they would send really good-quality ketchup cups. On a few recent orders they've downgraded to ketcup packets (only one for the whole order). I really hope this isn't a sign they're going downhill. Please guys, don't start sliding back on quality. Get back to your old standards! - A regular customer

I ordered the Oklahoma and it was delicious. Juicy, flavorful, and the perfect size! With the fries it came $15. You don't even notice the fact it's strictly a take out place because it took me less than 5 minutes to eat the burger! Would definitely recommend!

Past review - Now that is a TASTY burger! Update 20240209 - unbelievable. All kinds of burgers running around in this world. All kinds of people making them, including chef's of every level credential, this spot truly has it figured. There is just another level, and this level has no clear explanation. Either you got it or you don't. Yes the meat is tasty, the bun is perfect. You can't just go out and get the best meat and best bun and make the best burger. You have to have some magic, and melange has it.

I had high hopes for the new entry at the Shaw "ghost" kitchen home to two of my favorite takeout spots (Doro Chicken and Motown Pizza). Unfortunately, I had a less than stellar experience with my burger and fries. Unlike what others described as crispy-edged smash-burgers, my Royale wasn't browned at all; rather, it resembled something I might broil in my oven at home. Another strike - the dijonnaise basically overpowered, but only with the mayonnaise. Might have been an off day, but I really was underwhelmed by the burger. I also ordered the basic fries. Quantity was okay, but they weren't warm. I can imagine that hot, these may be nice and crispy, but mine were a little dry and cardboard-y. Overall: 2/5; the bun was good, but that was about all Price: $15 for the burger and fries Return? I'll probably choose Doro over this, and pick a different burger spot next time
