The Tulane Avenue branch of Melba's has REALLY GONE DOWN since the restaurant was sold to new owners. When I was staying at Site 61 Hostel from in December and January last year - just down the road from this location - I visited the restaurant frequently - on recommendation of the hostel supervisor and enjoyed the food, coffee, and sitting area a great deal. I loved especially the side dishes, such as the jambalaya, corns, and beans. From around March of this year, however, the restaurant has undergone a 100% downturn. I now go there only occasionally, often after shopping at Goodwill nearby. The outside order window has been taken away, and the upstairs Internet cafe has been converted into a hookah lounge. The number of employees has been reduced drastically to only two, and it's now far less busy a place. Many of the decorations have also been taken away. There are fewer foods and beverages available than before, and their kiosk machine is complicated to use. The Community Coffee machine is now no longer in the open area for self-service. The staff, especially the guy, are also rude and unhelpful. I had two unpleasant experiences there recently. One time was when my boyfriend and I went specifically for coffee and for a place to fill out a job application, only to find their coffee machine broken (which had never happened any time when I'd visited in the past). Another time was when I was VERY HUNGRY after not having eaten for nearly 12 hours (due to being busy), and I found that there was no longer a single item on their menu that doesn't contain pork or beef and is not fried. They need to make the restaurant more friendly to vegetarians and healthy eaters - for example, they could offer jambalaya that is not mixed with pork. The food prices also seem to have gone up - before, it was easy to get something for $15 or less, but now the figure is more like $20. So I ended up not being able to order anything, and no other place was open in the area then, so it was another hour or so before I got home to eat!
