How the Four’n Twenty Meat Pie Became AFL’s Unofficial Game Food | Eater

"A vast, 100,000‑capacity sporting arena where the smell of hot pies is as much part of winter matchday ritual as the play on the field: thousands of footy fans crowd the stands with trays and pockets full of warming pastry, and roving vendors (traditionally called “pie boys”) sell hot pies up and down the aisles. The pie’s portability and forgiving structure suit the stadium setting — fans prize a pie that’s neither too hot nor too cool and that won’t fall apart or spill gravy — and the snack has become a visible marker of the game’s working‑class roots even as corporate suites and gourmet alternatives have diversified stadium food choices." - Russell Jackson

13 Best Things to Do in Melbourne

"MCG, or “The G" as it's known, is an institution both in Australia and worldwide. It's the largest cricket pitch in the Southern Hemisphere, and was the site of the 1956 Olympic Games. In addition to hosting Cricket World Cups, the stadium is also where Aussie rules football games, or footie, are played. Plus rugby, soccer, and more. The G is also home to the National Sports Museum, so be sure to check that out. Aussies are known to be some of the most passionate and vibrant fans, so you almost want to sit in the nosebleeds to get the full experience." - Krista Simmons

Melbourne Cricket Grounds, East Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia - Sports Venue Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Give us the big picture: What’s the vibe of the place, what’s it like? MCG, or “The G" as it's known, is an institution both in Australia and worldwide. It's the largest cricket pitch in the Southern Hemisphere, and was the site of the 1956 Olympic Games. What kinds of events can we see here? In addition to hosting Cricket World Cups, the stadium also is where Aussie rules football games, or footie, are played. Plus rugby, soccer, and more. Nice. How are the seats? Look, it's a sports stadium, so the good seats are going to cost you, but Aussies are known to be some of the most passionate and vibrant fans, so you almost want to sit in the nosebleeds to get the full experience. Good for kids? Kids will fare well if they dig sports. Cricket matches are known to drag on, though, so if they're not particularly interested, prepare to have some other entertainment ready to occupy them. Anything in particular that makes this place special, from the programming to a unique feature it has? The G is home to the National Sports Museum, so be sure to check that out. It also has the world's tallest light towers, and is the largest capacity cricket ground in the world. If we’re going to be in town, what—and who—do you think this is best for? Sports fans of all ages should definitely come for a game while in Melbourne." - Krista Simmons

Google
Went to see the Lions v the Wallabies. What a venue. 90,000 + people so great atmosphere. Even though it's normally an AFL and cricket ground, didn't feel too far from the pitch. Was lucky enough to be on hospitality, great fun.

Google
This is the second largest cricket ground. We were welcome to visit the cricket ground. Each and everything of the auditorium was clearly presented to us. We saw the cricketers landing area , their changing rooms , Physio therapy rooms , resting rooms . The ground was being maintained. We also saw the place where the speakers sit , the management sitting area cafeteria and so on . The best part is the museum. Very informative. Must visit whole you are at Australia don’t miss it.

Highly recommend the premium access experience. We were given this as a gift and were pleasantly surprised to find we had our own tour guide 'Tom'. He was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. This tour took us to places the general tour doesn't go. The sports museum is also excellent for all sports enthusiasts not just AFL and Cricket.

Google
Great night watching history being made as Lions beat the Wallabies again... they could learn a thing or two from Marvel Stadium about serving food and drinks quicker...But generally great venue.

Google
On the one hand the MCG is a fantastic live sport venue that I have been to countless times. The public transit to get there is also magnificent. However the new security measures in place means that I was in line for 40 minutes to get into the venue and missed half the first quarter. Just make sure you get into the venue and half an hour early and you won't have any lines to worry about.

Google
What an amazing experience to be inside the huge MCG! We took a guided tour and our guide was a very sweet lady who showed us around the ground, halls, radio stations, dressing rooms and the long room! The stories of great players and the work that goes behind the scenes were all narrated all along the tour.

Google
Fabulous ground. 90000+ crowd for 2nd Lions v Wallabies test. Great game, great day out. Weird drinks rules.

Google
The MCG is a stadium guiding sports events like AFL cricket and more. The AFL hosts many people with a great atmosphere and a wide range of seating shops, food drinks, and a great view on the top level. MCG has food going from hot chips all the way to hot jam doughnuts with tickets for good prices. The MCG also has Merch shops for the teams playing the games.

Yelp
the HOME of sport is Australia. From hosting test match cricket and Australian Football for over 150 years to hosting the 1956 Olympics - the MCG has seen it all!!! I have been visiting the ground for almost 50 years and it hosts many great memories and the sounds of the passionate crowd makes my hair stand on end. I had the privilege to introduce the ground to my 3 boys for test cricket today
google avatar

Yelp
Came to Australia for the Boxing Day Test, as a matter of fact, my whole trip was planned around the match. Days 1-3 were great, with little in the way of problems, but Day 4 was a whole different story. Children were allowed to run up and down the aisle steps all day long without parental supervision. My disabilities were disregarded when I was told by security and other MCG staff that I should move to a section with the drum that came to the match later in the day, after I paid almost $90 for the seats that I had obtained. The drum was so loud that I had to take out my hearing aids to stop the pain. It was a joke to the MCG staff, and it was my issue to solve. Why pay for tickets to an event and hope to enjoy it when the MCG allows chaos to interfere with something I purchased. Thanks to your staff, Day 4 is the lasting impression I have of the MCG.

Yelp
Great place to watch a game. Ever one that is a blow out like the Geelong Richmond footy game.
google avatar

Tzarina W.

Yelp
For you cricketers out there this is the place for you. The grounds are available to see for a well guided tour. Famous players such as Bill Ponsner's statue among others stand proud around the outside grounds. You'll be able to take a seat in the normal crowd seating as well as the VIP areas. Seating fits over 100,000. Many memorabilia are throughout. A sports store is also available within the grounds. To be a member of MCG it will take years ...237 years or so! Family members cannot piggyback after current members and will need to be in the queue among many others.

Yelp
I attended the 2015 Cricket World Cup Final here, Australia Vs New Zealand and had an amazing time. The venue is one of the most awesome stadiums/grounds I've even been to in the world and I've been to 40+ around the world. The only small problem I had was the security and police were standing at the end of the stairs right in our view for much of the game. He would sit down, stand up so we had to him to move several dozen times or move to watch the play. Terrible design for that. Everything else was great.
google avatar

Ida C.

Yelp
We were told that the MCG i the most glorious place in the world to watch a cricket match, and when we found ourselves in town during the Cricket World Cup with tickets still available, we couldn't pass up the chance to attend! The stadium lived up to expectations! Clean and spacious with tons of great eateries from fast food to high end and everything in between. Helpful attendants, clean surrounds and ample bathrooms round out the experience. PARTING THOUGHT: The traffic can be very heavy before games, so consider taking the tram to avoid sitting in traffic for long periods...
google avatar

Leisha C.

Yelp
Now I could be a little bias here, being a born & bred Victorian and all, but easily my favourite stadium in the world. Drinks & food are a little on the exy side, but nothing out of the ordinary for a sports stadium. For AFL, the best seats are level 2 (N) on the wing, but even if you're stuck in nosebleed on Q, it could be worse (like top level at Etihad). I've spent a lot of time in standing room, and the odd occasion in the presidents / Olympic room, and equally love them all! I've been lucky enough to do the tours of Fenway & Wrigley, and the MCG sports tour has just as much history to match both of these. The sports museum itself is pretty awesome, including lots of hands on for the kids, or kids at heart! I've seen countless Aussie Rules games here (from pre season to Grand Finals) as well as cricket & soccer (football), and I still think there is nothing better than the sound of tens of thousands of fans clapping & cheering at the first bounce. Regardless of your sport, the MCG is a must for any sports fan! My only gripe would be the lack of internet signal / wifi when it's full - get with the 21st century! Take the tram or the train - there is parking but by the time you get out you'd be home (or at the pub) by the time you got put of the carpark Fun Fact - if you're in AFL members, head to the Hayden Bunton bar after the game (and before / at half time) for full strength beers!
google avatar

Zach G.

Yelp
I've never been a cricket fan. I mean, I'm American, I really don't even understand more than a tiny bit of the game. That being said, I understood how important this place was...how massive it was...how special it was, just from being a sports fan. And, I do like AFL. So, I finally got here thanks to an AFL game - Collingwood v. Sydney a couple weeks ago. I bought a ticket fairly last minute, and ended up with an okay seat. Really, I just wanted the experience, so it as fine. Getting here is a breeze via public transit, or walking from CBD. Food options aren't incredible, but good enough, and of typical (expected) price, though maybe not as crazy as I would have thought. The beer selection could definitely be improved, by far. All in all, this place is great. If you appreciate sport, you have to come to MCG. Even if it's just doing a tour...but I do recommend seeing something here, be it cricket, AFL, whatever. Just come!
google avatar

Yelp
Even without a game , this place is a good tourist attraction and quiet. Its surrounded by garden and is very commutable by tram from the city. The overall area is good for a evening walk as well
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
More than just a sporting venue There is so much to say about the MCG that it is hard to know where to start (and keep it within length). Not only can you come here to watch a football or a cricket match, but you can also go on tours and even visit the national sporting museum. In fact there are people who consider this place to be their second home (though I am not one of them). The best time to go to the MCG though is when there is one of the big games on (or a one day international game of cricket where people seem to dress up in the craziest costumes and chug enormous amounts of beer). It certainly is a place that I would highly recommend for anybody passing through Melbourne, especially at the height of the football season.
google avatar

Dione D.

Yelp
I've been to MCG twice, and it is so much fun! My first time visiting was to watch the Boxing Day test in December 2014. My friend is a member and we had great seats. It was quite sunny, but we drank beer and enjoyed the leisurely game. The second time was to view a rugby game (wow those players are hot!). There are decent food and drink options (a little limited, but available) - just make sure to bring sunscreen, and if you're watching cricket, something to read! Oh, and leave some time to get there - once you get off the train or out of your car, there is a long walk down to the actual stadium.
google avatar

Georgina N.

Yelp
As far as sports grounds in Australia go, there is nothing better then the MCG! I have been to countless games of football at the MCG since they year 2000 and have seen it undergo an amazing transformation! Lots of ticket options for AFL games at varying price ranges! I would recommend finding your way there via public transport as traffic can be a nightmare and taxi's are almost non existent if there is an event with a large crowd expected! Go early to take in the atmosphere outside the ground with multiple food vendors and all sorts of activities taking place! There are also multiple food options inside the ground with restaurants, bars and cheaper takeaway options available. Given that I live in Perth and go to Subiaco Oval a lot I am in awe of the MCG and how well this stadium runs compared to our hometown venue!
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
Excellent stadium - nothing compares to the roar of the crowd at a packed footy game. Food and beer are what you'd expect (meat pies and bland, mid-strength beer) but the place is kept pretty clean and it's a great place to see the games
google avatar

Cliff B.

Yelp
Not much else that can be said about the MCG. I'm lucky enough to have a seat to call my own for Hawthorn AFL games, and as a regular attendee it's easy to become complacent about actually how amazing a ground it is...until you pop down the road to the other one. Yes, the food at AFL games is cheaper this year than last, but for the most part it's still pretty average. You really have to look to find something as simple as a sandwich. At least they let you bring in your own. Be nice too if the Carlton Mid stranglehold on the (non MCC) bars was lifted and they got in some more decent drops. Other than those small gripes, it's the best stadium in the country, and one of the best I've been anywhere in the world.
google avatar

Yelp
When the roar rises at the 'G', you are witnessing something sacred to the people of Melbourne. Home of Australia Rules Football (Footy) in the winter and Cricket in the summer, sport is something of a religion in this city. 10 of the soon to be 18 teams in the AFL are from melbourne, and a game here between any of those teams, but more specifically the huge clubs like essendon, collingwood, carlton or richmond is like a clash of the titans, with roars from the 100,000 plus seat stadium filling the air. Take tourists to a big game, take your family for a sunday afternoon, it doesnt matter, just go and be part of the spirit. The stadium is huge, the people are passionate, and Melbourne wouldnt be the same without it. GO BOMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Liz O.

Yelp
Great venue. Saw Liverpool play Melbourne Victory here. The place is build to hold 95,000 people, what can you say. It's got everything a big venue needs and great transportation when the masses flood out of the place.
google avatar

tallulah f.

Yelp
Known as "The G" to all Melbournian's, The Melbourne Cricket Ground is the most popular sporting ground and was the birthplace of Test cricket. It is now the home of Australian football, the grounds themselves can hold more than four million people and host over 80 events annually. If you don't know much about Melbourne one of the first things you may notice is that locals are very passionate about their footy, no trip to Melbourne is complete without seeing a game at the G, so go on get a beer in one hand and a pie in the other and head along for some patriotic screaming and mexican wave dancing. AFL is only played through winter, but there are guided tours of the MCG held daily all through the year except Christmas Day and Good Friday. These are well worth while as your guide will take you all over the G including the locker rooms of the players and through the National Sports Museum.

Yelp
A must visit for anyone coming to Melbourne who has a passing interest in sport. This is simply a magnificent stadium. Clearly one of the world's best. I went to Yankee Stadium in 2013. Believe me, it's good but it has nothing on the MCG. Superbly designed, constructed and proportioned, the G is an awesome place to be at any time, but particularly during a major sporting event like a big Melbourne club AFL clash, an AFL final, a test match, a 20/20 or one day game or a special event. I've been to them all including some recent fantastic afl finals like the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide. There is no atmosphere like the MCG. It gets supercharged here. Easily reachable from Melbourne's CBD by walking or tram or bus, the MCG is a truly iconic place. Do not miss it.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
The reputation of the "MCG" or "the G" as one of the most iconic sporting stadiums on the entire planet is completely justified. The capacity at 100,000 people makes it the 8th largest in the world. What makes the G extra special is that no matter where you are in the stadium, you have an exceptional view of the action, be it AFL or cricket. My first experience was a T20 match between Australia and South Africa. Way up on the 3rd tier I thought my view would be obscured and tiny (I remember being way back at Twickenham and requiring binoculars). But my view was still awesome. It has to be the steepness of the stadium that does the trick. The atmosphere is amazing irrespective of the crowd. A game against Sri Lanka this past year (~20,000) had the same atmosphere as the Boxing Day Test against the incredible English side. A word of warning: the G gets freezing in the shade and boiling hot in the Sun. So bring sun block and plenty of layers.
google avatar

Travis K.

Yelp
It's impossible to write anything fresh about the MCG, it's all been said. Except on yelp.com.au! Basically, it is Australia's version of the colosseum. A truly awe-inspiring structure on the outskirts of the CBD. Easily accessibly by foot, tram, bus, bike, unicycle or whatever. The spiritual home of Australian sport it is at it's peak in September for AFL finals which can draw up to the ground's capacity of 100,000 people or on Boxing Day for the annual Test cricket match. Even if you aren't a sports fanatic I would encourage you to go along to a match for the atmosphere and energy the stadium emits, even when quarter-full. Tours of the museum are conducted daily and are a fascinating insight into the history of the ground and you get to walk onto the hallowed turf. On gameday the beers are well-priced and the queues are short. I can't recommend it highly enough!
google avatar

Kellie H.

Yelp
We are marching as one to the holy grail... No matter what direction or route you take, going to the MCG is a pilgrimage. The awe inspiring structure never fails to get me giddy with anticipation of seeing my mighty team taking on its opponent. You could say that it's just a stadium, why does it trigger such emotion in us all. For me its the thrill of the fight, the passion of supporting your team and the general atmosphere invokes. It's electric on the right day. The food offerings have improved out of sight of the past few years and prices have done down for everything except for beer. The strength has done down too for night games, so they lose points there.
google avatar

Jon S.

Yelp
Honestly the most horrifying, awful tour we've ever been on. Maybe coming for a game is more fun, but do NOT come to tour. The tour guide spent the entire tour belittling women ("women are only interested in the bathrooms here, they like putting on their lipsticks") and our ethnicities ("only Australians understand sports here, none of you will understand this anyways"). He refused to tell us about the cricket teams here because we "wouldn't understand anyway". Why would we come on this horrible tour if we didn't understand or want to understand? When we tried to take pictures, he yelled at us that we weren't allowed to take pictures. Utterly pointless and boring. He got very excited about the gym floor which was as generic as gym floors could possibly come.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
It's the home of sport in Melbourne and Australia and would have claims to one of the greatest stadiums in the world! It's a coliseum that packs in more than 100,000 people and brings an electric atmosphere that is second to none. I have been fortunate enough to view some spectacular clashes, events and battles but the national anthem prior to finals is something to behold! The venue is constantly being upgraded and revamped, always giving some of the best facilities in a sporting venue! I think the only thing anyone would ever have qualms with is the price of food and drinks. The ticket entry isn't to bad and the food available is okay it's the just price of the later that is a partial issue. It's an incredible venue and everyone needs to go there at some points, if I recommend any day it would be a final or Boxing Day. It's something special, that will always be a huge part of Melbourne!
google avatar

Wanugee N.

Yelp
The Melbourne Cricket Ground, or MCG as it is called, is what many Aussies would consider the main stadium for the entire country. Maybe not Sydney Siders, but most Victorians would! It holds international Cricket matches here, ergo the name, but can also have other events, like Aussie Rules football, with rival Melbourne teams like the Collingwood Magpies, St Kilda, Carleton and the Richmond Tigers going at it. After all, Victoria is the birthplace of most of the Footie teams in the league, even though they have tried to spread the league around the country to Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Queensland. The place is huge and very wide compared to places most North Americans are used to going, although the stadiums in the US are newer and nicer, and seat more people in many cases. No worries mate, grab a pie with ketchup, a tall one, and enjoy the fair dinkum footie at the MCG, yeah! Bring the bonza shelias, too, mate! Yeah.
google avatar

Erin K.

Yelp
The MCG is a beautiful stadium that holds pride of place in Melbourne. They offer a great tour of the grounds where you learn tons about the history of the stadium, and you can go into the little MCG museum and learn all sorts of interesting things about footy and cricket over the years. As a Canadian-born girl, I find learning about the background of these two uber-Australian sports really fascinating, and it helps me to enjoy footy even more. Living in Adelaide, I've only been to the MCG for matches six or seven times, but I've never had a bad experience. Get there for a game and/or a tour, you won't be disappointed. Go the Crows!!!
google avatar

Clarissa Y.

Yelp
I agree with Minh. I'm not huge on sports aside from being an avid enthusiast of Premier League Football and don't lynch me - but I don't find Aussie-Rules Football to be that appealing. However, I am a fan of Melbourne Cricket Ground, also known as the MCG. Positives: ~ Large venue. ~ Great central location. ~ Consistently clean. ~ The staff are actually not too rude. I've had plenty of fun times at the MCG and I'm looking forward to my next visit. Even if you aren't an Aussie-Rules fan, don't feel left out and join the fun anyway!

Yelp
What an impressive building! I've been to my fair share of large stadiums but this one was truly immense. For you fellow Americans, this place, from a capacity standpoint, it is like Michigan Stadium etc in that it seats over 100k. However it is a free standing stadium, not dug into the ground. So when you approach it by car, train, foot, whatever, it is super imposing. Also all of its seats are permanent, no bleacher benches. I was bummed that the week I was in town nothing was going on there, I decided to stop by and take an up close look at this historical venue. Lucky for me, they do tours! I went along with a group of about 20 others as we walked all over the place. We were taken up top to the highest reaches of the stadium and then all the way down to the field where we got to stand on the grass. We went just about everywhere. We went inside the cricket batting cages and training rooms. We also checked out the Collingwood locker room three days prior their big ANZAC day game. Of course the tour leads you right back to the huge AFL team store inside of the MCG, which you also should check out. One day I'd love to take in an actual event here, but the tour saved the day.......

Yelp
The MCG is a world class sporting venue: While it is used for various sporting events, the best thing to possibly see at the MCG is footy (Australian Rules Football). It offers a football experience truly in the spirit of what footy is supposed to be about, with a huge crowd exposed the the weather! Unlike the Docklands Stadium accross the CBD, the MCG is not sanitized and polished. It has remained a stadium for regular everyday people rather than rich people in corporate boxes who dont necessarily have a thorough interest in sport. I support Richmond FC - one of Melbournes larger teams with a huge, vocal and one-eyed supporter base. When you barrack for one of these large teams (Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon) your clubs fans fill out the MCG - especially when 2 of these teams are playing against each other and the roar of the crowd is totally engulfing. The stadium is easy to get to by both car and public transport, is wheelchair friendly and offers an experience of watching sport in the manner that it should be watched and has been watched for donkeys years! If you want a sanitized, prissy, climate controlled sporting experience under a roof then go to Docklands - but the MCG is a venue for the real sports fan and is accessable to the common people.
google avatar

Ali H.

Yelp
There are quite a few reasons for you to visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground, known locally as the MCG - or simply "The Gee". It is a huge sports stadium, seating almost 100,000 people, where people enjoy the winter spectacle of Australian Rules Football (AFL, the "footy") or summer Cricket at state, national and international level. Rock concerts are held here, as are many cultural events. Indoors, the football clubs and cricket clubs have their rooms for players and members. The Melbourne Sports Museum is here, with several sporting artefacts and exhibitions from history. There's also several restaurants and conference spaces which are varied and practical. Car parking is underneath and public transport (trams, trains) are very close walking distance. It's a varied and useful venue.

Yelp
A modern day living/ breathing Colosseum Do check out the place when a sports event is going on there, the atmosphere is electric

Yelp
You are not a true Melburnian unless you have been to the G on a Saturday night for a game of footy. The MCG is the creme del a creme for sporting entertainment in Melbourne. It has a capacity of close to 100,000, and houses the top games in AFL over footy season, and then the cricket over summer. The G has three levels, it is advised you do not sit up the top if you are afraid of heights, as you will be scared sh!tless. I prefer to sit on the second level, because I think it offers the best viewing. The bottom tends to only allow you to see the game in play up your end, and the top level everyone seems like ants. Try to avoid driving there if you are going to a big game, as it will take you hours to get out of the car park. Also important to note is in bad weather the carpark is often blocked off due to heavy rain.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Pretty cool stadium. It was my first time being exposed to meat pies in Australia and it was odd to see people carrying them away by the arm full. Prices for beer are pretty expensive, but not too terrible compared to prices outside the stadium. I found it interesting that they allow you to leave during the game and then come back in. Better food prices outside at the vendors. For AFL, seats are pretty good from all angles, the open air feel is great.
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
Ahhhhhh. The G. What can you possibly say about the G, except that it's the G, and that forever the G it will be. (Which is to say, probably, probably). Melbourne's premier arena, we agree, I can usually only afford the apogee. (I'm speaking quite literally, you see. I find my seat on Level 3). That said I have been at the bottom for free (once only). I was there as a guest of one of the MCC (Or rather I suppose I should say 'we'). But it was Geelong versus Melbourne, so we spent most of the match in the bar. Point is, the G's cool enough that I bothered writing a six rhyme poem about it. And you don't get more important than that.
google avatar

Kris V.

Yelp
Every time I visit this epic ground I am immersed by the greatness that is the MCG. From a lazy afternoon test match, to the AFL finals, the MCG sports a massive one hundred thousand capacity and truly is Australia's iconic sporting landmark. From a first time visitor, to a local regular, there is nothing like walking through those front gates at the peoples ground.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Great stadium rooted with a lot of historical history. I really enjoyed the tour which was given by a volunteer member of the MCG club who has been a member for 50 years! Great access to the dressing rooms, pitch side and different access levels. All included in the 30$ is the Australian Sport museum which has some great memorabilia. Well worth a tour!

Yelp
For me the MCG is Melbourne. Now before you start effusively ranting about other iconic things such as Phar Lap (New Zealander), Ned Kelly (downright nasty crim) or Luna Park (um lame); you will realise that I am right. Not only is the MCG of massive historical importance as the first cricket club in Victoria in 1838 and hosting the first ever first class cricket game between NSW and VIC in 1856 but it is also the home of Aussie Rules and the Boxing day test. As you walk into the large ground that can hold around 100,000 people, you can almost smell the hundreds of years of sporting drama that have unfolded in this stadium. It is definitely the crown of Melbourne's status as the sporting capital of Australia (and arguably the world considering Australia's sporting prowess). My only criticisms are that they insist upon serving light beer only (boo), unless you are in the members stand, in which case you have to drink your beer in the bar (i.e. can't watch the game properly - boo). Even if you are not a fan of sport the MCG is worth going to at least once just to see what all the fuss is about.

Yelp
For many Melbournians, the MCG is the spiritual capital of our city. It certainly is for me. Screaming your head off with 80,000 other footy fans as your team comes from behind to win the match is about as exciting an experience as I can imagine. If you are visiting the city during the football season, do yourself a favour and go and experience it. Functionally and aesthetically the place is amazing. You get a good view from any of the seats, you never have to queue long for a beer or the toilets, and the price of entry is very reasonable. The best thing about going to the MCG, or any other place to watch Australian football, is that it is devoid of the type of mucho aggresive fan violence that turns off so many people from European soccer. Family's with lttle kids are very common, as are eldery women knitting little football jumpers for their grandchildren. Friends supporting different teams all sit together - their is no segregation of the fans at all. If you want to experience the real spirit of Melbourne - go and see footy at The G.

Yelp
I attended a Boxing Day test here and loved it. Well, I did most of the time although it did begin to drag a little towards the end. The crowd provided almost as much entertainment as the game. I wish I had been around for an Aussie rules game though.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the visit to the stadium for the Adelaide match a couple weeks back. The general pop seats were nice and I enjoyed the concessions far more than what I had at the other stadium near the docklands. The fish and chips was delicious!! This shrine of cricket history is awesome in size - I believe as many seats as the Rose Bowl in Cali --- wow!

Yelp
Amazing stadium. My boyfriend and I went to see an Australian rules "football" game here and it blew us away. The atmosphere was something else. The game was a little hard to understand but the local supporters really get into it.

Yelp
A shrine for sports lovers, no trip to Melbourne would be complete without a visit to the 'G. Whether you're interested in a visit to the footy, cricket, other event; or to take a tour of the sports Museum (http://www.nsm.org.au/) or an MCG tour (http://www.mcg.org.au/Tours/The%20MCG%20Tour.aspx), there's something to cater for most sporting tastes.

Yelp
How do you review a place like this? A stadium worth every last drop of hype the shlubs in sporting media throw at it. Where sporting dreams rise from the muck only to be stomped upon ruthlessly, relentlessly. Where tens of thousands of screaming humans, from almost all walks of life, ride the wave of sporting ecstasy and overpriced booze all the way to the final siren... or whistle? And then you storm out, kicking plastic cups and cursing your team's paper thin defense and one-paced midfield as opposition fans grunt out their team song as only a pack of monosyllabic, sub-human bags of bones can. You can't review it, really. Some things are beyond 'review'. You just go, every week your team plays at home and hope that amazing shit will happen... and it often does. If you've been there in a big game and it's a close contest, then you've experienced something other-worldly. Bring your own sandwiches.

Yelp
Compared to Perth's major football stadium (where I'm from), this place is like being in football heaven. The seats are semi cushioned and we had access to a fully enclosed bar right behind us. You can pay with Paypass for all your food and alcohol, which is a big winner for me. If its not too busy, you can even sit at the bar and overlook the entire live play with uninterrupted views (depending on your seat allocation I guess). The ground is a 20 minute walk from the CBD, or utilise the trams and trains on offer.

Yelp
It has the best atmosphere for AFL, life is never better than a packed crowd, a cold beer and a hot meat pie!

Yelp
The best stadium in the world. If you are visiting Melbourne, I would highly recommend you catch a game of Aussie Rules or Cricket. The atmosphere is electric!

Yelp
It's a scintillating experience to walk through the whole stadium from front row seats to media box to locker room. It's a great feeling to relive some amazing memories.

The home of cricket! Steeped in history, evident with every step you take around it, this vast stadium is a must see.
