The Best Places to Eat and Drink on Haight Street in the Lower Haight Neighborhood | Eater SF

"The Bay is getting more and more barbecue. Memphis Minnie’s — the city’s longest continuously running joint — is a happy progenitor to that scene. The meat is slow smoked Texas-style, but the housemade sauces (tomato-, mustard-, and vinegar-based) will please anyone with a hankering for a specific Southern region’s flavor." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Delicious soul food and I loved their home made bbq sauce and hot sauce. They were even open on Thanksgiving evening, so they saved the day for us visiting over the holiday. We ordered the 3 meat combo and the chicken, brisket and hot link were cooked and seasoned great. Mac and cheese, beans & potato salad were good too! Staff were very nice and helpful as well even though they were super busy. A must visit spot if you’re in the area and need some quick comfort food. 👌🏽❤️

I haven’t been here in a long time. I ordered beef brisket with 2 sides. It was delicious. The patrons today were very friendly. Finding parking has always been an issue in that area.

Barbara Whitney

Google
Best authentic BBQ juicy and savory brisket. The sides beans, corn muffin are my favorite. The dine in ok hokey but charming. BBQ sauces are flavorful.

Google
This place is crazy good considering I have never heard of it. Meats are on point, sides are perfect, sauces are complimentary, and the service was tremendous. All this and the prices are enough to not scare anyone away. We had a party of 9 and left with lots of leftovers and spent under $300. We went big to taste everything but less than $30 a head and all leaving full and the leftovers were delicious. Gotta eat here again. Only downfall is the small eating space inside but staff made it work for us. Wish the city would help cleanup the streets and backup the business owners to keep the outside as great as the business’s here and their owners. Shout out the man I think is the owner who put Disney music videos on the tv when we walked in with all the kids.

Google
This place has gone downhill since the new owners took over. Some of the food is still good but some of it isn't. And it's extremely inconsistent. Some days it's good, some days not as good. The worst part is the lady who takes your order (one of the new owners). She never gets your order right and even starts yelling at you, when she's the one who can't understand English and she's the one with the heavy Korean accent that is hard to understand. I'd rather order from the cooks. I've ordered once from the Korean man and he was okay. He was also hard to understand, but he was more friendly, and he didn't mess up my order. Also I experimented by sending other people to order, and they also had the lady mess up their order and communication difficulties. Oh yeah, don't bother ordering by phone, it makes it worse, and at least if you order in person, there's a chance the cooks/workers will hear you and correct the order. Giving it 3 stars because the times when the food is made well, it's still good and reminds me of when the old owners were there. Also, their sauces do seem to be the same as before, and they've always been known for their homemade sauces.

My brother and sister-in-law always knows the best places to eat. First time my sister and brother-in-law and I ate here. OMG we ordered the special where we would try everything, and it did not disappoint. The meats and cornbread muffin the best. Will be back soon. Thank you!

Andrea Santos

Google
the city may not by known for bbq but memphis minnie’s is good enough to satisfy your cravings. can only speak to their delivered food but the brisket was well marinated, although a bit dry, cornbread and sides were solid.

Chef Tony

Google
I give them an A for being better than the last BBQ place I went to. Portions were small, mac and cheese needs an improvement, potato salad also can use more seasoning and mayo. That muffin way to dry. Brisket definitely was the best part. Had the right flavor, smokiness I like. Rib tip i didn't care for. I will go back and try something else. Lemonade was good.

Yelp
Back in the days of my youth almost every neighborhood in San Francisco had a good bbq spot to pick up some good soul food. Leon's, Nate's, Kansas City, brothers, bbq warehouse. Most of the great rib places of my youth are gone. It was a little off when I returned to Memphis Minnies to try out the bbq. It had been years since I had tried the place. I expected to see the big burly guy I remembered but instead I saw a small, slim , smiling Korean lady ! Ok Korea had great bbq and perhaps the bbq culinary world was moving from further out east than I thought. Tried the ribs, smoked fried chicken, and hot links. All pretty good! I was especially impressed with the moist and tender chunks of smoked meat. Even the chicken breast meat was really moist and not dried out. A slight Smokey flavor with no trace of reheated, stale, left overs. The pork rib was juicy, flavorful and even had a nice even smoke ring around the meat. The portions are not like gorilla bbq that rival the Flintstones dinosaur portions but filling enough. My fellow coworker ordered the pulled pork sandwich that was devoured in minutes! All in all, it was a nice surprise that I could relive a little of my youth with this cuisine.

Yelp
Coming from Texas, I happen to be a bit of a BBQ connoisseur. Thus far, I have yet to find a BBQ joint in the bay area I would consider pleasing and Memphis Minnie's is no exception. I have a few friends that seem to love it, so I cannot pass too much judgement. This being said, I have tried it multiple times and am continually disappointed with the food. Don't get me wrong; the staff and atmosphere is great and there is always a line out the door. However, if my friends are wanting a Memphis Minnie's catered event, I usually offer to BBQ instead. This being said, please take the following review with a grain of salt. I find most of their meats dry and flavored only with sauce. I am extremely picky when it comes to brisket and would not recommend it here. Also, their burgers tend to be lacking in flavor and texture.

Yelp
I used to dine here frequently with co workers when they first opened in 2005 and we enjoyed it immensely. IDK if the recipes have changed, but, I was not at all pleased with the food that I received. The rib tips were over cooked, dry, and tough. The greens were sweet which was different to say the least. The cornbread and beans were the only items in my meal that I enjoyed. Overall, I was so disappointed that I threw more than half of my order in the trash. I didn't even finish the beans and cornbread.

Louis R.

Yelp
3/21/2025, via DoorDash, I ordered a few groceries for myself and to share. I ordered another pork rib slab, brisket, and their largest BBQ double hamburger. Next to Everette and Jones BBQ in Oakland, Memphis is second place in the Northern California Bay Area.

Cameron N.

Yelp
Being from Memphis this is not it at all, I ordered Minnie's Taster I got slow smoked Texas beef brisket, the smoked fried chicken, and the ST. Louis style smoked ribs The brisket was not good even with the bbq sauce or the other sauce they included The smoked fried chicken was disgusting no other words for that And the ribs were ok but they didn't have any flavor I got the potato salad and fries for sides the fries were garbage but that's to be expected since I used Uber I didn't get to taste the potato salad because no utensils were included So it's a no for me Memphis bbq has seasoning and none of this was seasoned at all. This BBQ is not Memphis don't get fooled.

Yelp
Tucked away in the streets of San Francisco is a dive of a place, Memphis Minnie's. With only 5 small tables, this place was made for takeout. My family of four met up with a family of five, and we filled 40% of the room. My family ordered the "VIP party" which consisted of a generous sampling of all of their meats and all of their sides (which was sufficient for 2 adults and 2 pre-teens, plus a to-go box for some late night grazing) The food was really good, but what struck me was the service. The person at the counter (don't know if he's the manager or owner) was very hospitable to the children in our party. Our friends got there before we did, and they told us that when they came in with their two preteens and one 5 year old, the manager brought them a plate of mac and cheese as a "sample". Later in the meal, he even brought a smoke cake - 3 store bought Little Debbie type cakes stuck with some Pocky and 2 candles in a dome filled with smoke (wish I'd taken a picture!). It's these little experiences that turns a dinner outing into a memory. Please check out Memphis Minnie's for a great meal!

Yelp
I was extremely surprised the taste of food when I visited Memphis Minnie's BBQ Joint in SF. It's more like a smoked meat than BBQ. I ordered Saugage and cornbread which was just 'ok', the potato salad disappointing lack of good favor. I was thinking I was going to have southern style Memphis BBQ based on name of restaurant. 'Not' I also felt they were somewhat pricey based on small portion of food. Lastly, it was 12:30pm on a Tuesday, (2) people were sitting in restaurant eating, and (1) came in ordered take out, and I sat and ate there 1 hour 10 mins. I would not recommend this place for Good BBQ.

Yelp
A go to spot for bbq food for me in the city. The slab of ribs were so tender and slid off the bones!
google avatar

Hikaru M.

Yelp
I had high hopes with the Memphis name. The meat is flavorless and dry. Some of the worst BBQ I've ever had.
google avatar

Molly T.

Yelp
The spunky southern ambiance is largely why I'm going with 4 stars instead of 3. I've both ordered delivery and physically eaten at Memphis Minnie's a few times over the past year, and each time it doesn't grab my taste buds in a way that makes me eager to go back. Lean brisket, runny mac n cheese, all a little more on the bland side as far as BBQ goes, but I do genuinely think this place is worth a try. The staff is very kind and there was a recent change in ownership, so I think it's worth giving them a shot as they grow in their new direction.
google avatar

Raymond G.

Yelp
Love me some Memphis Minnie's! I honestly enjoy their whole menu. They put the smoke flavor in everything. But if I had to highlight something, whatever you get, you have to pair it with some cornbread. The service is fast and friendly. Parking can be challenging but worth it when you enjoy their bbq asap.
google avatar

Isis T.

Yelp
I hate to do this. It's my local restaurant and I've been eating here since 2015. The owners are nice but there have been way too many issues with my delivery orders. Today I ordered sweet potato pie slice, which they always seem to do right. It was BROWN and old and spoiled. No whipped cream. It's usually orange. I still tasted it and regret it. This is like the 4th time I've had an issue and when I call it's hard for them to understand my concern. You can't send out food that's spoiled.

Yelp
Great food, sauces were fun and yummy, service was excellent. Fried chicken was our favorite but it all was tasty. Nice, chill atmosphere. Definitely will go back!

Ronnie S.

Yelp
The service and speed of service was unmatched in my experience. The people were absolutely gracious. The food, drinks, and sauces made me take my time, and enjoy every bit of it. The Cabernet was good and inexpensive. I love it, and hope to come here again.
google avatar

Yelp
The smoke this restaurant pollutes into the air every night is not worth the lousy bbq.
google avatar

Pstephan A.

Yelp
This place has been around for a long time and the reason is the delicious bbq. We've come here over the years and it does not disappoint. Flavorful tender meats cooked properly! Greens with a touch of spice, and the Corn Bread! is a must. Recommend and will be back.
google avatar

Annette C.

Yelp
Ordered the brisket on DoorDash and it's so incredibly dry and lean! The side of macaroni was very watery. Super disappointed with this purchase, will not be returning.

Robby L.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the service was even better. Would definitely recommend for anyone craving some great food.

Yelp
I have heard so many good things about this place so I was excited to support their restaurant. Having moved back to California from the Midwest I have been craving some good bbq. A place with Memphis in the name seemed like the best choice. We went on a Saturday night and it was almost empty so we were seated right away. It's a small restaurant with a few photos on the wall. The server was very attentive and took our order quickly. I was very excited to see rib tips on the menu as they hardly have them in the Midwest. I wish they had put sauce on the rib tips beforehand. My partner got the brisket which was really good. I ended up eating some of it. I was not a fan of the greens or pit beans. The beans had no seasoning or anything on them which I had never experienced before. The mac & cheese and cornbread muffins were great. The thing that threw me off the most was the lack of sweet bbq sauce. Memphis has some great sweet bbq sauces so I expected to have some. Overall I'd recommend going because their meats are good.

Yelp
Friendly staff, food arrived in a timely manner, happy to be a patron. Cheddar broccoli soup served complimentary while you wait. Enjoyed the Reuben sandwich Wednesday special: Tender, well seasoned brisket with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, mustard sauce on rye bread. I chose Pit smoked beans for the side, great combo. So much sandwich I had to grab a to-go bag. Located convieniently on Haight. Highly recommend, will return!

Yelp
I went back and forth between 3 and 4 stars because one one hand, a couple items here are really good. But for a place that specializes in bbq, it unfortunately was not what I'd recommend for out of towners used to finger licking bbq. The bbq itself is not tender and fall off the bone. Maybe it was an off day or something. But, their fried chicken and pastrami sandwich are chef's kiss. And service is really nice so I feel for giving 3 stars. But I feel like I would be doing disservice to both the restaurant owners (can't improve without feedback) and the foodies (who wanna know what to expect).

Yelp
I've came here a few times over the years dating back to 2017. I labeled this one of the best bbq joints around when it comes to meats. Located on the iconic Haight st so good luck finding parking nearby but you'll find something eventually. There is outdoor seating in front with the table and awning so you can't miss it. Now to the food.. the first and last thing I've ordered was the spicy chicken sandwich and it hasn't lost a step. Juicy and filled with flavor. Fries are pretty good but nothing to rave or complain about. The brisket is one of the best things you can get here but the sandwich I got was a bit on the dry side which leads to my strongest opinion of this place.. probably the biggest let down when it comes to falling in love with the meat and being let down by the sauce. It's literally red colored water unless you like the mustard type(not bad). If you ordered to go or snuck a bottle of sweet baby ray's in then you might die of satisfaction so perhaps this is the middle ground required to save a few lives? Jk. I wanna add the sides portions are kinda small but the quality is pretty good, especially the mac n cheese. I'm not exactly sure but I feel like this establishment might be under new management being that the interior has changed and upgraded a lot. It kinda had a dirty dive-esque look to it before and now it looks rather modern. Not a complaint but the food tasted a bit different and the decor changed so I mightve done my own math on that. Anyway, give these guys a try and see for yourself. I'm sure there's plenty that you'll love about this place

Yelp
We've had Memphis Minnie's do catering for our office, and they were terrific! Paullee was a pleasure to deal with throughout, and highly reliable: fast response to emails, punctual delivery, fast set up. Food was very reasonably priced. For a party of 50 we've ordered: 8 pound of brisket, 5 pounds of pork, 4 smoked chickens (translates to 32 pieces), 2 half-trays of slaw, 4 half-trays of mac n cheese, 2 half-trays of caesar salad, & 50 corn bread We've also ordered 24 impossible burgers from another place for our vegetarians.. a bit of an extra step, but the result was absolutely worth the effort!! Everyone LOVED their food. Many went for seconds and cleaned out the trays!! The slaw wasn't too popular, so 1 half tray would've been enough, and we could've used a couple of more pounds of brisket, but that is on me. This was my second experience with their catering. The first one was just as amazing: the event I was a part of had a much larger order with more options, and the food was just as fantastic back then, so they are consistent at that.. Thank you!!

Yelp
If I could give this place 6 stars I WOULD. Before I say anymore, go here, just go, you will not regret it. The food is great and the service is even better! The restaurant reminded me of my aunts old bbq restaurant; great ambiance! We called ahead to ask if the kitchen was closed and luckily it wasn't, so we made the trip over. By the time we got there they had our table set up for us even though we didn't make a reservation! They brought us complementary broccoli soup which was incredible and our server was so kind; we felt truly welcomed! Our main course was great; and their homemade bbq sauce is delicious. Prices were also very reasonable and they offered side orders with courses which is so uncommon for SF. I am not exaggerating when I say this is the best restaurant experience I've had. We will definitely be coming back!

Sandy T.

Yelp
I ordered takeout, and didn't tip so they gave me less meat than I ordered and also gave me a smaller sized sides. I ordered 1 lb of brisket, but got maybe half a pound or less. I ordered two medium sides, but I got two small sides. I didn't notice until I got home. They don't say anywhere that a tip is mandatory for takeout, if they had said so, I wouldn't have ordered anything and just left because I know that people that have entitled attitudes will screw up with the food or do something out of anger. After this experience I will get my barbecue elsewhere.
google avatar

Samir A.

Yelp
This place is a monster so much variety meats, very tender and fatty. You could even get tri-tip tacos. I think that's pretty damn cool. Also have new Memphis barbecue spaghetti, spaghetti with barbecue.
google avatar

Fred L.

Yelp
Ate at Minnie's today, and the ambiance was great along with their food selection. The service was very professional and attentive. They even gave a free sample of broccoli with cheese soup!
google avatar

Elisa R.

Yelp
Ok ordered 3 ribs and greens. This is probably the last time I order from Memphis Minnie's. I've given it 3 chances and it gets progressively worse every time. This time my ribs were tough and full of fat luckily it had flavor tho I guess...? The bbq sauce they give you is more sweet than savory and I know some people might like it more sweet that's fine, but I don't. So I didn't care for it. I feel like when I've had it in the past it was more savory. Now the greens... lol WHY ARE WE PUTTING SUGAR IN GREENS?! I like my greens with flavor packed with some sour and heat! Why are they beyond mushy?? The consistency is almost like soup. I don't remember these greens being so sweet last time. Quality control is just all downhill. The 1st time wasn't bad, 2nd time was questionable, this time was the last. I'm sorry Memphis Minnie's but I'm not your target audience.

Yelp
This is an updated review of Memphis Minnie's BBQ. After the ownership change everything was good for a while then changes happened that seemed to affect the atmosphere and then the quality of the food. A wall was put up to block off the kitchen. I always loved looking over to see who was at the helm. Angel or Javi? The good news is the kitchen is now open again and the quality of the ribs is back to the old days. Delicious! The sides are and have always been delicious. The food is now served to your table instead of picking it up. There is definitely a little Korean twist as they give you a tasty cup of soup before your meal. I have found the owners to be very nice and service oriented. I am super grateful they are continuing the bbq tradition of Bob!

Yelp
There is hardly much good BBQ in San Francisco. There some BBQ joints that are new and some have gone but Memphis Minnie's is my one of my favorite consistent places to go for BBQ in the city. I enjoy their St. Louis ribs, their trip tip and their brisket. The flavors are good and the meats are well prepared. I also like their mac and cheese.

Yelp
My, how the mighty have fallen!!! Ownership must have changed because the decor DEFINITELY has. I had been going to this place since 2005. I'm from Louisiana originally, and a friend brought me here to get some southern flavor on the coast. I'll admit that I really liked the food, especially the brisket, ribs, and red sauce. Over the years of being friends here, and it was ALWAYS the same, "Dang man, this place is !". This place became my go-to for YEARS, and unfortunately, the quarantine detoured my patronage. I decided to hit them up yesterday and have a trip back to Louisiana (I know, I know, I know... it's not like Texas or deep south bbq, but on point for the coast). I ordered the two item side with cornbread ( greens & beans), and a pound of rib tips. I got my food, headed home, and prepared to tickle my fancy... instead, my tooth got a rattling, alight Mike Tyson style workout, and my tastebuds are still pouting. The tin tops were like Jerry. The greens were overcooked and mushy, and to top it off... THERE WAS A ROCK IN MY BEANS!! Luckily, I didn't comp down, but I did bite it. I would find another place to frequent... I think my Memphis Minnie days are behind me... with the increased prices, there shouldn't be a decrease in food quality. THIS REVIEW IS ABOUT THE FOOD!!!

Yelp
Came to Memphis Minnie's BBQ on Mother's Day. We had the Saint Louis Style Smoked Pork Ribs, Cornbread, Potlikker's Greens, Cole Slaw, Chicken Caesar Salad, Chili Cheese Fries, Mojito and Ice Tea. We were seated immediately and provided complimentary tomato soup. Shortly after ordering, the beverages arrived!I was so happy with the Mojito. It was served full in a very large sized glass and was very stiff! Love it! A++ for that! The food showed up shortly thereafter. The ribs were flavorful, tender and delicious; they still have my favorite Texas sauce to smother my ribs with! The Chili Cheese Fries were tasty with sumptuous chunks of meat in it! The Chicken Caesar Salad was huge and very fresh. The cornbread was perfect, the greens were just the way I like them and the cole slaw was very tangy. The service was excellent. Their customer service approach is exemplary and appreciated. The ambiance is very nice and inviting. The restaurant started filling up quickly. Good thing we came early. We will definitely return!!

Yelp
I rarely make reviews but I had to go on here to share omg how good their ribs are. I'm sad they ran out of Mac n cheese and fries by the time I ordered but their hot links and ribs were perfect on its own. Their to go plates are packed with care.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my local go to favorite barbecue spot. The meats are so smoky and delicious and their sandwiches are on point. Love it love it love it.

Yelp
I had a urge for BBQ.... I had heard good things about Memphis Minnie. But with Covid running around we ordered take away. Ordering online is easy, but pay attention to the By the Pound portion, when viewed on certain devices it shows quarter pound pricing instead of pound. The beef brisket is tender and juicy, just how smoked brisket is suppose to be like. I just wish there was a bit more fat under the bark. Pork rib tips. Some of the pieces were on the dry side, but with the right amount of sauce its really good. The smoked fried chicken. How can you go wrong with fried chicken?! It is a bit on the dry side, due to being smoked. The crust is well seasoned. Sweet pulled pork. I am not sure what is "sweet" about this dish. The pork is actually moist with the right balance of fat to meat. This is the dish that does require in sauce. Side Dishes: Potlikker Greens: think collard greens. The greens are well broken down, but might be a bit tangy for some people... I like that way though. Sweet potatoes: stewed sweet potato chunks. Really soft and sweet. BBQ Seasoned Fries: seasoning is good... not too salty, but with a touch of sweetness. The fries are just on the dry side. Corn bread is really good. Very moist and sweet too... great balance. Heat it up, add some butter and perhaps a little maple syrup.

Yelp
Still the best bbq in the Bay Area! This place makes me ridiculously happy! And hands down the best Caesar salad ever!! Everything is smoky and delicious!!
google avatar

Ryan K.

Yelp
The highest quality pie. The nicest service. Much love I would highly recommend this cozy spot.
google avatar

Erin J.

Yelp
Oh man, I know it is a bad idea to get BBQ to go/for the delivery, and in this case, I absolutely should have heeded that advice. However, I didn't, and I had a less than great experience with their food. I actually live right down the street from this place now, but I ordered for delivery about 6 months ago and never wrote a review. I got some brisket and pulled pork. The pork was fine but the brisket was super dry. Everything was just OK. I would have to give this place another try before I recommended it, but certainly don't get it for delivery!
google avatar

Brennon W.

Yelp
Didn't love it. Decent Mac & Tri Tip. Apple pie extremely overrated. Sauces could be better and small portions
google avatar

Kenneth C.

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD!!! We got takeout and the guy was super nice and gave us tomato soup while we waited!! And just overall fantastic vibe I will come here every day! Also superb fried chicken they could honestly looney toons trap me with it

Matt N.

Yelp
Amazing sf classic... if you love bbq you are eating here.. PERIOD Brisket, pulled pork, ribs... the vinegar style coleslaw is amazing.. the beans.. amazing...

Yelp
I had just moved here from South Carolina, and I've been in the south nearly all my life. I've had barbecue from Tennessee, the Carolinas, Alabama, Kentucky, etc. I thought I'd try my first San Francisco barbecue experience. You can tell when meat is smoked, and it was obvious that this brisket didn't taste like it was cooked today. A bit disappointing, but still tasty with enough BBQ sauce. Taste: 3/5 Smell: 5/5 Sight: 4/5 Touch: 4/5 Sound: ???
google avatar

JJ Y.

Yelp
Dare I say the best scratch pecan pie in San Francisco! However, there is more to be desired from its meats. I recommend 4505 for its meats over Memphis Minnie's.
google avatar

Zachary H.

Yelp
Picked up from Memphis Minnie's because of a deal on grubhub for $5 off, and got a sweet smoked pork sandwich Ordered - Sweet Smoked Pork Sandwich - Overall was pretty alright, but not very great. They served it with sauce on the side, and by itself it wasn't super moist or flavorful. With the sauces, it became better, but the smokiness and the pork flavor were both underwhelming. Overall, not the worst place, but definitely more satisfying stuff out there.

Lexus E.

Yelp
Super fast service, especially since we were starving. Loved the privacy inside for the messy meal, felt very welcomed. Enjoyed everything we tried
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
This is my 2nd attempt to order through 3rd party. First time, disaster, but that's another story. NOW, I finally sunk my teeth into delicious satisfying goodness! I ordered pork ribs, corn bread, sweet potatoes, collard greens & fried peach pie. It came w/side of sauces, some bbq and some mustard concoction. I enjoyed everything but somehow the collard greens were kinda vinegary!? I was really hoping for a savory taste. But still I'd order again and try whatever else is on menu.
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
I really enjoy this place. The barbecue is excellent, whether you dine in or get it delivered. I usually go for the beef brisket, and most of the time, it's really good. However, there are occasional off days in the kitchen. When you take a break from cooking and order food, you hope it's delicious. Overall, I genuinely appreciate this barbecue spot in San Francisco.

Gary D.

Yelp
New owner is amazing...friendly. Best hamburger ever !!! And don't forget the fries. Brisket is a must.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 25 years. Original owner died several years ago. New proprietor maintained flavor and quality. Until now. Memphis Minnie's had the best smoke flavor in SF and most of the Bay Area. Wonderful smoke flavor is now gone. I can get boring bbq anywhere. Sadly, I won't be returning. No mas . . . So disappointing - I'm originally from Texas so I've experienced a thing or two regarding bbq.
