Argentina: Chef Sebastián Weigandt’s Favourite Haunts in Mendoza

"Over a century old and set in the city centre near Azafrán, this market is where I source fruit and vegetables as well as veal, fish, hams, cheeses, spices, and sweet delicacies, and I particularly love eating mozzarella pizza with a fainá topping; created in 1883 as a large open-air market on the edge of the city, it has grown into a meeting place and shopping destination for locals and tourists alike." - The MICHELIN Guide

We stopped in for a quick lunch and were treated to some delicious homemade food! We ordered the canelones stuffed with spinach and ricotta, topped with homemade tomato sauce and plenty of cheese. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, and reminded me of something my nonna used to make in her kitchen. The portion was generous, and the bread on the side was soft and perfect for dipping in the sauce. A simple, classic dish done really well!

This is a great Mercado. It’s clean, orderly and safe. It’s more of a fine foods market than farmers market. A great place to great charcuterie and cheese, fresh meat and chicken, dried goods, sweets and wine. There are a couple of tasty places to eat lunch or dinner.

Mercado Central is a very varied and interesting shopping center, very reminiscent of Mercado Centrales we visited in Livorno and Firenze, Italy. There are fishmonger, butchers. Green grocers, arts and crafts vendors, artesanal kiosks, as well as cafes, bars and restaurants. We had some very good coffee at one of the cafes, my wife's cappucino had a layer of cream on the top and real chocolate sludge on the bottom. You could even get a personal paella in the Mercado Central. Highly recommended - there's something for everyone.

Smaller than I thought it would be, you can get food here, fresh vegetables meat, pastries and cooked food too.

A unique and fun experience with many great selections of various foods. Some, very well priced, others were okay value.

It's a nice place to buy alfajores.

It's an old building, and should be a refurbished market. People can buy meat, seafood, fruit, veggies and so on here. There are eateries and restaurants inside, with many local customers.

Historical building, since 1883 it has been the center of provisions in Downtown Mendoza. For many years you could find all types of meats, cheeses, and the most exotic spices from around the world. Today, it offers flavors from all around the 🌎, and also it has a wonderful space to eat local food or take the classical coffee with 🥐 or tortita mendocina. It has a main entrance in LasHeras Street. Give it a try!
