"Merendero Estela, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it vermillion cart with covered picnic tables, makes the case that Portland needs more Honduran restaurants. Located along a stretch of 82nd populated by used car lots and vape shops, this is the spot for baleadas, plush flour tortillas made à la minute, filled and folded with refried beans, cotija cheese, and crema. But what makes us regulars is the winning combo, pollo con tajadas. Calling this dish fried chicken and plantains doesn’t really do this pile of green banana chips and burnished thighs blanketed in cabbage, red pickled onions, and a creamy mayo-based sauce justice." - krista garcia

"Merendero Estela, a Honduran food cart just a few blocks north of Cartlandia, specializes in pollo con tajadas, a.k.a. “chicken with very green bananas,” an underwhelming name for a princely basket of fried chicken and sliced tostones, nestled next to a bed of shredded cabbage and pink pickled onions. For something simpler, the cart’s baleadas — soft, handmade flour tortillas folded over refried beans, cotija, and crema — are hard to beat." - Krista Garcia

Ended up here because it looked like a nice place to sit down. Little oasis on 82nd. Food was incredible.

If you're looking for traditional Hoduran food, you must visit this place. If you go, try the Baleadas and the Carme Asada Plate, the fry tacos and the chicken plate are also really good!.

Google
Get the baleadas made with handmade flour tortillas. We got the “simple” ones which contain the best refried beans I have ever had and creamy cheese and sauce. Will come back just for the $5 baleadas!

Google
I think is the only place that sells baleadas in Portland. The food was good and the tamales hondurenos too.

Google
First time here w my mom who’s visiting from Denver where there’s a lot to Hodureno food. I ordered the Baleada de Asada and a pastelito de pollo. My mother ordered pollo con tajada. It was all so good and so colorful. The curtido was on point and the sauce they use was light sweet and creamy. The agua de maracuya was fire!!

Google
This is the second time visiting from Cali! Their Baleadas are the best and the agua de maracuya is bomb. The service does lack as other were getting their food that arrived 10min after us. I felt like because the others were Salvadorian vs us who are Mexican they took longer. The atmosphere is decent Would be better if they had more than 1 working table and not some weird broken off to the side tables. Overall the food is great but everything else lacks.

Google
Delicious. Had 2 baleadas and the fried taco (with shredded chicken). Everything tasted like it was made fresh. Thick tortillas in the baleada made it enough for a light lunch. And it came with a creamy spicy sauce. The taco comes with cabbage and other veg to complement the crispy and savory and crunchy taco. Hard to eat the taco with the provided fork and it’s messy to pick up, so plan your attack accordingly. We arrived at noon on a Tuesday and saw several other people arrive after us. The food took some time to make, so plan for that.

Love the baleadas! My daughter loves the tajadas con pollo (chicken with banana chips). My husband is Hondureño and this is one of the best food Honduran food he has had.

Yelp
I have gone to this place quite a few times now. The first 2 times years ago it was great, but lately the food hasn't been good at all yet they continue to raise their prices. It now costs about $20 per meal and they give you burnt or overcooked meat and they have become stingy in the salsas they give to you with your meal. They have lost any touch of quality they once had. I have even had issues where I have placed an order told a wait time came at that time and they gave it away to someone else and had me wait an additional 30 minutes for my food that was preordered! I have heard there are other Honduran restaurants out here and I will be giving them my business going forward. This place is not worthy of your money anymore.

Yelp
Amazing food, super beautiful flowers, understandable prices, behind reccomend. Highly underrated! Estela and her sister clearly cook with love, beyond nice.

Yelp
Ricas y porciones abundantes. Recomendamos las baleadas y tajadas con carne asada. Como que estás en tu tierra. La horchata también la recomendó. Lo malo que hablen a las 11:30, porque tengo una hambreee.

Liz R.

Yelp
The menu doesn't have a million things on there, which is great because it has true Honduran staple dishes. That really are delicious The baliadas are sooooooooo GOOD!! The carne asada cooked and seasoned perfectly The fried chicken with plantain chips are delicious as well. The chicken was juicy and fried just right. This Hondureña approves Merendero Estela I feel lucky that this gem exist

Yelp
The carne asada con tajadas was *great* (grilled beef with slices of plantain). The people here are very sweet. They cook the dish from scratch as you order, so it will take 15+ minutes. There are some nice picnic tables to sit an eat your food. Also highly recommended is the maracuya (passionfruit) juice - so fresh! The agua de tamarindo is also excellent, if perhaps a little more tart than versions I've tried before (which I like). Prices are around $12/person for the Honduran dinner plates or typical cheap taco prices for the Mexican options. We will be back! Oh, and their homemade hot sauce! Wow! It's very hot, but SO TASTY. Tasted like fresh scotch bonnet or habañero peppers mixed with other ground spices. Note: Parking is a little confusing. There is no street parking on 82nd. As you're heading South on 82nd, just *past* the cart is what appears to be a driveway for the neighboring house. Enter the driveway and turn back toward the cart, and there is a small lot behind the cart.

Yelp
Read about it in cheap eats, and though we spent a normal amount on dinner it wasn't cheap, but it was well worth the price. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of inexpensive items on the menu from tacos for $1 on up. We went for the pollo con tajadas and the carne asada. Both were delectable! The carne asada was tender and flavorful, the chicken was no doubt crisp but once sauced not quite as crisp. But the flavor was down right mouth watering, the sauce they put on it is from appearances a mayo based sauce with a hint of spice, The fried green bananas were good, the pickled veggies packed a nice bite, and the portions were large. There isn't a lot of seating available at this cart, but that really isn't a reason not to come. We certainly will come back.

Yelp
Good honduran meals, good burritos, fast and affordable. They've recently erected a large awning and several picnic tables, which improves the experience of waiting for your food. A warning: sometimes their beef is gristly, ask them before you order it.

Ahmed A.

Yelp
This is absolutely one of the best Honduran/Mexican food trucks in town. Very friendly customer service, awesome prices, and their savory tacos are amazing!

Marina C.

Yelp
We ordered one of everything because the menu was a little difficult to understand. At first I was a little apprehensive as the photos didn't look big or super appetizing and I'm not a big fan of plantains. We waited for awhile for the food to come out, probably 15 minutes. It was well worth it, this was easily one of the top 5 Latin American meals that we've ever had. The food was fresh, flavorful, Plates are big and it's a great value. We've been to the more "traditional" Mexican cart directly behind the cart facing the street with a very similar experience. We alternate going to each cart now every week.

Yelp
I was visiting portland. and I went to this magical place to have lunch. the food was spectacular the size of the plate was big and the most important thing the taste of this food was delicious and magical. if you are visiting in portland you have to go and the price is very good a good experience here

Kathy B.

Yelp
Great little whole in the wall food cart. It's best to call ahead for the pollo con tajadas. The fried chicken is made fresh and the wait can be long. My family is native to Honduras and this is our favorite when we are missing home! The horchata is Honduran and has a different flavor from Mexican recipe, a very unique flavor. We love it!

Reyna C.

Yelp
Well I think is expensive compare to others places my mom and dad was there and they said that the food was good but to expensive prices are around 12$ 13 and 14 that is not cheap

Hja S.

Yelp
Little Honduran and Mexican food cart just north of Flavel on 82nd ave. Had the baleadas with chicken and was very happy--thick tortilla was both fluffy and crunchy, seasoned dark meat chicken chunks, creamy mashed beans, fresh avocado slices. Served with the standard green and red salsas in tiny plastic cups. Large and satisfying for $3. Tacos are only $1 and will try them next.

Alex B.

Yelp
This spot is absolutely phenomenal. Fresh food, friendly service, and fairly priced. Skip the Mercado and give this place a shot.

HJ M.

Yelp
We get the baleadas & tacos. Great value. Yummy food. Nice family-owned joint.
