San Antonio Export Merit Coffee Begins Its DFW Takeover This Month | Eater Dallas

"I’ll be checking out the new Deep Ellum shop at 2639 Main Street when it opens on March 26; the bright, airy space, designed by Michael Hsu’s Office of Architecture and accented with natural woods and navy decor, will serve espresso drinks made with top-notch beans sourced from Peru, Colombia, and Honduras and roasted by Merit Roasting Company. The location is an offshoot of San Antonio’s much-lauded Local Coffee (opened in 2008 by Robby and Neesha Grubbs) and follows Merit’s earlier expansion into Austin." - Amy McCarthy

San Antonio’s Merit Coffee Will Open Two Dallas Locations | Eater Dallas

"A new outpost from the founders of Local Coffee in San Antonio is planned for 2639 Main Street in Deep Ellum, featuring a modern, light-filled design by restaurant designer Michael Hsu with warm woods, white powder‑coated steel and navy accents. Construction is expected to begin next month with an anticipated opening sometime in February. The shop will serve small-batch beans roasted by the owners' Merit Roasting Company; no menu has been released yet, but customers can likely expect a standard lineup of espresso-based drinks. The project continues the expansion of founders Robby and Neesha Grubbs, who launched Local Coffee in 2008 and have grown it to six San Antonio locations." - Amy McCarthy

The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. Ordered the berry cobbler match (I think that is what it was called) and a ham and cheese croissant. Both were very good. I especially liked how crispy and flakey the croissant was.

Google
Enjoyed a superior cortado, beautifully presented, with that signature punch of a very strong brew, but silky smooth. The young staff were absolutely lovely and efficient, and the atmosphere was relaxing and spotless. What more could you want? We will definitely be back.

Google
My favorite coffee shop in Deep Ellum. The coffee is always fresh and the Iced Latte is delicious! Parking kind if sucks, but the coffee makes up for it!

Honestly was expecting a good experience based on the reviews, and I’m disappointed it was anything but. There’s other coffee shops in deep ellum. This one has a plus sized barista that has a lot of attitude about a drizzle of caramel. Claiming they cant do that bc it’ll sink, I said it was fine they still refused to do it. Upon refunding, the sweet girl at the counter couldnt figure it out and I was holding up the line, so I told her its okay. I wouldn’t have written a poor review if it wasnt for the barista in the back who was an oversized shorty with piercings. Idk her name so I can only go off description. I asked the tall girl with glasses if she could add half-n-half in exchange. When she realized she forgot to do it after telling me it was fine, lil chubster told her to leave it “I won’t notice.” I noticed and hence the bad review. This place is overpriced and the staff could be trained better overall.

Google
Amazing service from the cashier & Abraham (the barista)! When we ordered the pumpkin cold brew, it wasn’t good. Abraham waited for us to try it & saw we didn’t like it. He immediately offered to make us a pumpkin latte instead & it was 10x better. Very kind & helpful! The pecan latte is also amazing!

Google
First time here , great customer service, very cozy.I had an iced latte. Coffee flavor was bold and strong , and sweet just like i like it! definitely recommend!

Google
The pour over coffee is wonderful, and it’s served with a mug and insulated carafe to keep it warm as you sip at your own pace

Google
Loved this coffee shop SO much- we were in town for just a week and had this every day of our vacation. Would fly back just for the banana pudding matcha alone!! My boyfriend loved the cereal milk latte. We wish we had these options every morning! Excellent quality and offerings.

Yelp
Had such a good matcha here. Blackberry cobbler is such a unique flavor. You really need to try it for yourself. I got oat milk and might ask for it a little less sweet, but still delicious. My partner got the cereal milk cold brew and he thought it was a good blend of coffee flavor as well as the sweetness from the end of a good bowl of cereal. The barista also said she had to sign an NDA for the sweetener in it. Kinda interesting lol Inside is modern and clean! They are pet-friendly and had pastries that looked good too!

Yelp
The cereal milk cold brew was definitely a sweet treat. It's like a fruity pebble mixed with a shot of coffee and milk. Originally, I came to get the Matcha cherry blossom, which they had at some point, but it was seasonal so when I came, it was gone and replaced with the banana pudding matcha. Nice staff and super cute and relatively quiet and spacious place to work.

Yelp
We're from out of town. Found this place on the Source app. What a find! I had a vanilla latte with oat milk and BWE got a chocolate latte with oat milk. Both drinks were well-made. They were not too sweet and we could taste the coffee, which we like. Some espresso drinks are too sweet with no coffee flavor. These were perfectly balanced. Staff was super friendly. The place has a quiet vibe. Sadly, they were out of croissants, but all in all we had a positive exp.

Yelp
I got the cherry blossom matcha here and it was good. It is really sweet so if you aren't a sweet drinks person I wouldn't recommend. The service was quick. And the facility itself was clean and quiet even though there were a good amount of people inside. I would recommend for a working or studying space.

Yelp
Ordered: 12oz Iced Cherry Blossom Matcha (~$8): cherry blossom syrup, Spirit Tea matcha, housemade strawberry syrup, and oat milk 12oz Pour Over (~$8): La Senda Double Carbonic Maceration 450 from Guatemala Aya's take: My first time in Dallas and I have to admit, the coffee/cafe scene is lacking. Thankfully, places like Merit Coffee exist to show Texans what they're missing! I got the 12oz Iced Cherry Blossom Matcha which was both sweet and earthy and floral and vibrant. The cherry blossom syrup was slightly chemically in taste but other than that, I really enjoyed it. We also got a 12oz Pour Over of La Senda Double Carbonic Maceration 450. These beans had notes of blood orange, molasses, and mango tea. It was super bright, clean, and bold in flavor. Definitely recommend stopping by!

Anitra T.

Yelp
Merit is still as delicious as before. You can just tell the beverages are made with quality ingredients and love! Get the pistachio matcha iced with oat milk and thank me later.
google avatar

Allie T.

Yelp
Had seen this place all over tiktok and was dying to try! Coffee was the perfect level of sweet without being too sugary or strong. 10/10

Yelp
Great third wave coffee. Solid shots every time, even when they were packed. The staff takes their time with each order and it's always consistent.
google avatar

Yelp
When visiting DFW, it's easy to find a coffee shop but not so easy to find a parking spot. That was my deciding factor for choosing Merit Coffee--wide open parking right in front of the shop on a Tuesday morning. Coffee was served up by friendly baristas. My basic vanilla latte was served up quickly, and just the right amount of sweetness (pro tip: 1 1/2 pumps is just right if you like sweet but not super sweet). I will say this roast was not my favorite as I prefer milder, but those who like a bolder flavor will probably enjoy.

Yelp
Merit coffee was so good! Some of my favorite coffee I've had in a while. Ordered the cereal cold brew and strawberry match with coconut milk. BOMB. The cold brew was just enough sweet. Anymore would have been too much for me. The match was also not overly sweet as well and I really enjoyed whatever coconut milk they use, actually tastes like coconut. Staff was super friendly and the vibes inside are cute as well.

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop that has an open space seating and is aesthetically pleasing. The woman taking my order at the front was really sweet and helpful. I was in desperate need of some caffeine so I ordered a matcha latte with a shot of espresso, topped with cinnamon. I noticed everyone getting their drinks and mine still hadn't been called. So I asked the barista if mine was coming up. The barista came in hot with the attitude saying "I have a lot of tickets and I have others to make, but yours is coming." I was just double checking because we've all been there where we wait 15+ mins and when we ask, they've somehow lost our ticket or have forgotten to make our drink. Hey! It happens. I was just double checking, but the attitude really was off putting. I also do believe he forgot about my drink until I brought it up, bc suddenly, he stops making all the other drinks and starts mine and mine was the next one up. He called my name twice, rolling his eyes. I didn't think the drink was mine bc mine was a matcha latte and the drink was not green at all. I thought maybe there was another Kim there. But the 2nd time he called my name, he looked at me. I grab the drink and instantly knew it was made wrong. Essentially it was just a reg latte with cinnamon. I felt like it was such a hassle to complain and given the barista was already mean, I just let it go, but really I should have gotten what I ordered.

Yelp
This is a cozy little coffee shop tucked into the chaos that is Deep Ellum. I ordered the cereal milk cold brew. It looks super cute, sprinkled with fruity pebbles, but it was not my favorite. She assured me it was on the sweeter side, but honestly it could've been sweeter and I'm not really even a sweet coffee drink kind of gal. I'd probably go ham for a cocoa pebble cereal milk cold brew!

Yelp
Okay. So I'm new to town and was told this area is kind of dangerous. I don't know if that's true, but I do know this place is "the spot!" The vibe is great, natural sunlight awesome, and the barista was chill. I most def. like the location for writing and reading. So, if you are in town, come check them out for coffee, tea... tell the Dr.K sent you! #DrKindness

Yelp
Seriously cool spot in Deep Ellum. Staff were friendly, coffee was perfect for a hot day, and the building is pretty cool too.

Yelp
Excellent coffee with subtle flavors. Interior is cute and comfortable, perfect for a break from walking all day.

Yelp
Nice gem in the Deep Ellum district in Dallas, TX. The coffee selection is great. The servers were polite. Large windows to look out of while sipping drink, working on your computer or just relaxing.

Yelp
Good bakery items, excellent espresso! Not too bitter, or bland, perfectly dialed in! Came on Saturday morning and it was pretty busy, but the staff was very friendly and super helpful for being so busy. Very impressed with the baristas, I sat at the bar and chatted for a bit with the redhead and commiserated over the Stars loss :(. All in all, very good experience, I can see this place becoming a regular staple in my deep ellum visits!
google avatar

Lathan B.

Yelp
Looking for some good coffee and tea recommendations on the downtown area and this place came highly recommended. The service was great and the staff gave good recommendations of items on the menu. First time trying the iced strawberry matcha latte and it was pretty good. Also a great place to get some work done. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with great energy due to it being on a highly walkable area of Deep Ellum. Loved some of the specialty drinks they had in celebration of the 2024 eclipse! Assuming they have lots of other specialties year round. The baristas are chill and friendly. No attitude. Great service.
google avatar

Roger C.

Yelp
If you are staying downtown (Deep Ellum) there is not a whole lot of coffee choices...but this one is great!!! Really cool inside with a good amount of seating both inside and out. Had an iced Americano and it tasted perfect. They also have a few food options
google avatar

Fern G.

Yelp
Awesome little shop. I tried the cereal milk cold brew because it is so unusual and no joke it tasted like fruity pebbles without the sugar shakes. It was quite expensive but fun for the experience. The cafe design is lovely and they have some super cool merch available as well. I would definitely frequent this spot if I was local.
google avatar

Yelp
Was on a work trip and needed a little pick me up. Found this place is Deep Ellum. The place is super clean and trendy as soon as we walked in. I was surprised by how much space it had inside. The employees were all super nice (has to be that southern hospitality). I already had caffeine earlier and did not want to overload so I got a decaf Iced Americano and let me tell you... I've never tasted better decaf espresso. That tells me the quality of all their other stuff. If you can make decaf espresso taste good, you can make anything taste good! I would HIGHLY recommend, especially if you are coming from out of town and need a guaranteed W on coffee in Dallas!

Jazz A.

Yelp
Best matcha hands down. I'm not even a matcha lover but the strawberry matcha here is to die for!
google avatar

Francis G.

Yelp
Inside is just like a regular coffeeshop. nothing special. Coffee is fine, not bad, not great. Service was normal, nothing special again and just super slow which I get in the morning. Reason for the 2 stars is their Breakfast tacos were $5.00 for a REALLY crappy taco. What a giant Rip-off!!! . It was tiny, smooshed flat & wrapped in aluminum foil that probably gets delivered in stacks of 100 for $0.50 a price. Also tasted like it's been in the fridge for 2 days and microwaved warm. I should have returned it. 3 coffees & 3 tacos +tip & tax = $35!!! Not going back there out of principle of cost. Just left feeling angry and ripped off!

Yelp
Extremely hard to find a parking spot, and I mean EXTREMELY! Walked in to get some coffee beans, asked the employee to give me some recommendations, it was all professional and friendly. I bought 2 bags of 2 kinds of beans. Got home, tasted the coffee, absolutely hated one of them, but loved the other one. So I phoned in asking if I can return or exchange it to the one I like, she said yes. (By that I mean I'll keep the bag I've already opened, I just needed to exchange the unopened bag of coffee that I didn't like.) Went back 2 days later, took 30 mins and went around the blocks 5-6 times to find a parking spot, walked in to do an exchange, the guy had no smile, asked me coldly what kind of beans do I want to do an exchange with, I picked the one I liked, and he scanned it, and said " OK, the beans you want to exchange is cheaper than the one you are returning, so we can do that." again, with no smile, vibe got weird, then I was waiting for him to tell me what's the difference so I can decide if I want the change or not, but he didn't do it, he just scanned it and stared at me, so I figured the difference must be small then if he didn't even bother to give me the change. OK, whatever. Will I be back at this place? No, espresso coffee is kinda sour for my liking. ( They use the same kind of beans that I returned. Too sour.) The brewed coffee tasted okay though. And the parking situation is beyond just a headache.... And I hate parallel parking. LOL

Yelp
This place was cool. I love the decorations and such however the seats were extremely dirty. I like the music they played here as well. Cool place to work and hangout in deep ellum. The coffee was 4/5 for me. But I would come back.
google avatar

Clayton M.

Yelp
Good cold brew. Good matcha, regular and strawberry. Carmel latte was recommended. Cool merch- hats, shirts, mugs. Very similar to shops back home in CA, including the pricing (not cheap). Friendly service, except they wouldn't let us use the bathroom until after we had ordered for some reason. We had a long drive to get into the city beforehand so that was tough for us.
google avatar

Grace Y.

Yelp
coffee - got cold brew :) really strong chocolatey notes (in my opinion?) overall vibes - a really nice open space to do work! i chilled out for a few hours and benefited strongly from the wifi and outlets and table space. thank u for housing me merit coffee
google avatar

Wesleyann L.

Yelp
yo as a former barista of 5 years and current ongoing love for a good cuppa jo, literally came in twice right. the first time homeboy really had to correct me on the fact that they don't sell iced coffee, just cold brew. ok then came in another time, different staff, and the person at the order point slayed the mf house down. short, glasses, ambiguous vibes i mistakenly asked the barista for the bathroom code bc the front was busy asf, and she really mf cut me off. to tell me. the code. NOOOOOOOO!!! literally where is the comfy cozy coffee shop i want merit to be ??? what is wrong w ur deep ellum elitist staff yo gimme my mf coconut milk matcha and maybe don't be mean (???!!!) she also waited until multiple customers after me got their drinks to even start mine WHAT anyways the drinks were mid too lol
google avatar

Devon M.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I stopped in on our last day of vacation in Dallas and loved the coffee here. She got the strawberry matcha and I had a sip. I normally don't like matcha but I thought it was really good! I got the cereal milk coffee. They soak the milk in fruity pebbles and then pour that into the coffee. It tasted so freaking delicious! I want to make it at home myself. The service here was super friendly and pretty quick. And the ambiance was bright and inviting. We didn't get anything besides our drinks but that was totally worth it. If you're a coffee lover, I think you'll enjoy this place.
google avatar

Angelica B.

Yelp
The place was so cute! I couldn't find much outlets though, so if you want to study here make sure you come during their downtime so you can get a spot near a plug. I got their rose iced tea and I really liked it! It was nice and refreshing! They are super nice and friendly!
google avatar

Jeremy B.

Yelp
I didn't actually go into the store my sister did, but she did say they were very friendly with good customer service, I had the strawberry matcha which was very good. I will definitely be coming back soon. I love a good matcha.

Maddie B.

Yelp
one of my favorite spots!! the cereal milk latte is the best and not too sweet :) also they have one of the best matchas in the city
google avatar

Irene K.

Yelp
Hello caffeine boost with 4-shots espresso in 16oz. Milk choices: regular, oat & coconut Mellow baristas and clean minimalistic establishment Hipster without the pretentious vibes. The hot ginger snap latte had a sour taste I could only assume was from the sweetener so that was disappointing.. maybe it would've been better iced..nope.. the espresso & gingersnap still had a sourness & mild bitterness. My friend had the chai.. was "flat" "watery" -- Fiction was hands down better.

Laura G.

Yelp
Delicious matcha, great overall aesthetic and ambiance and delicious homemade pop tarts.

Bailey G.

Yelp
First time in - Barista had zero sense of urgency, took 15 mins for one iced tea and one iced latte. They stood talking to a guest or friend at the counter while moving at a sloths pace.
google avatar

Norvel H.

Yelp
On this trip to Dallas for Christmas we were disappointed with the coffee everywhere in general - just Could not find a delicious cup! Thought Merit would be great but just did not make the mark.
google avatar

Daniel D.

Yelp
I've had better coffee from scetchy gas stations. The bagel bombs are a treat but for a coffee place you would expect the coffee not to taste like battery acid. Also get a to-go cup the house cups are only 4oz hardly. Cheers
google avatar

Kiana M.

Yelp
coffee is good. i still think it's a bit over priced. but what bums me out the most is that every time i come here, the workers just seem miserable to be there.
google avatar

Nikki G.

Yelp
The coffee is good but their mode of operation needs work. When I ask for "no ice" I get significantly less amount of coffee which to me, an avid buyer, is just so petty.
google avatar

Lawrencia L.

Yelp
I went here to grab some tea and the the tea was really good. Since this location is in deep Ellum you do have to ask for a code to get in the restroom. The restaurant was clean and they had different pastries and muffins to select as well.
google avatar

Max W.

Yelp
Pecan Lodge seems to be the reasoning behind my new discoveries in Deep Ellum but I am not mad at it. This place is also across from Pecan Lodge; I noticed it while eating dinner but it was understandably closed. I have a bad habit of defaulting to Starbucks for coffee when I'm traveling for work so I made an effort to come back here the next morning and I'm glad I did. The staff were super friendly in helping explain the differences of items on the menu. For example - they offer 2 different types of cold brew - washed and natural. I ended up getting the washed (more chocolately notes) and enjoyed it so much I got the natural (more cirtusy) on the way out! Both profiles were excellent; super smooth as well. It was so good I came back next day as well! There are plenty of seats inside or out to enjoy your coffee. The vibe is modern and clean - overall a superb place to get some coffee. They had cool merch too but I didn't have room in my suitcase.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Great environment to study or work. It's very open and inviting. The staff was really nice and helpful with my questions about their coffee, and their coffee is delicious! I love their merch too and got the cutest beanie!
google avatar

Seno C.

Yelp
Glad to find out about Merit coffee. Coffee is very good. I got the Affogato and it was just perfect. Clean and spacious inside. Bright , well decorated. Definitely will stop by again.

Ramon M.

Yelp
I ordered a strawberry matcha, like I always do at other places. The matcha was a "sherk green" and not a forest green like it's suppose to be. Added that their matcha hurt my stomach really bad all day. Do not recommend.
google avatar

Phuong N.

Yelp
The baristas were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, and it showed in every cup they served. The ambiance at Merit Coffee is cozy and inviting, with plenty of seating options to relax and enjoy your coffee. Whether you're catching up with friends or diving into some work, it's the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while. The only thing I would say is that the seats do need a deep clean. Seems to have multiple stains on all their seating. Overall, Merit Coffee in Deep Ellum is a true standout in the Dallas coffee scene. With exceptional coffee, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere, it's definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Chevon D.

Yelp
This is the Best coffee I have ever had! Great staff and amazing atmosphere. Great place to chill with friends or work/study.
google avatar

Madison M.

Yelp
There is plenty of seating and plug ins for customers who wanna do work or studying! The drinks were good and the staff was friendly. The matcha doesn't have any added sweetness, but I prefer it that way. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
My review from 3 years still stands exactly true. Perfect location, great atmosphere, lovely employees. The coffee is delicious, and treats tasty. Again, it is pricier than I would like. I will continue to come here!
