HAGS Wants To Be NYC’s Best Version Of A Queer Potluck

"Food is just as important as activism to Justice and Lindsley, which is why Nuestra Mesa—a volunteer-run kitchen collective specializing in fundraising initiatives for mutual aid in Brooklyn—is one of their first recommendations to come to mind. “We are so in awe of their work and spirit,” Justice and Lindsley say. “Every Nuestra Mesa event we’ve been to has been a little bit different, but equally exciting!” Some of their favorites from these events have included dishes like sorullitos de maiz with mayoketchup, and chuletas fritas with pickled onion and charred pepper. “We don’t want to imagine a world without folks like Nuestra Mesa. Their vision and determination literally changes lives in our neighborhoods and reminds us that we can do it too! We all have a responsibility to participate in mutual aid.”" - sam stone 1

"We ordered from Mesa Coyoacan after trying to figure out what was open within walking distance, and I walked to go get it in the snow, which actually wasn’t that bad. We had an order of chips and guacamole and each got enchiladas verdes with chicken. Totally acceptable! "

The Best Mexican Restaurants in Brooklyn in MICHELIN Guide New York City

"Mexico City native, chef Ivan Garcia is at the helm of this Brooklyn hot spot, where wolfish appetites are sated with richly flavored cooking. Fronted by windows that open up on to bustling Graham Avenue, the long space is outfitted with patterned wallpaper, snug banquettes and communal tables. The kitchen's spirited presentations are simply a joy. Partake in tacos featuring hand-crafted tortillas, like the suadero for instance, stuffed with beef brisket and avocado salsa; or torta tinga de pollo, packed with shredded chipotle-braised chicken, mashed black beans, pickled jalapeños and a toasted roll to sop up that delish sauce. Reposado and diced mango enhances the pastel tres leches—and to keep the tequila flowing, hit up nearby Zona Rosa." - The MICHELIN Guide

What a gem of a restaurant! No doubt Mesa Coyoacan is an authentic Mexican restaurant with unique flavors and dishes that cannot be found elsewhere. The guacamole and shrimp ceviche was the best way to start the evening. It was so good that I was eager to have what was next. For entrees, my table had the pulpo & chorizo tacos, enchiladas verdes, enmoladas, camarones al ajillo and the signature dish — chiles en nogada. I tried every single dish and was astonished at how flavorful every bite was. The signature dish was like no other dish I’ve tried before — perfectly sweet and savory. I have to mention the horchata that I drank, because it is the best I have ever tried. It is not too sweet and it had a delicious smoky flavor that I fell in love with! The dessert was the perfect way to end the meal. The flambéed plantains were so delicious and Instagram-shot worthy, like everything else. The best part of the night was the service. Stefania was our server and she made our night extra special. Her attentiveness, kindness and communication in describing every dish to us was memorable. Gerardo the manager was also wonderful to us and we want to thank the Mesa Coyoacan team for making our night so memorable.

Google
Overall rating: 4.4 Price: $21 w/ tax & tip I used to come here all the time when I lived in the area. Still standing strong. Loved their brunches, but went in for a quick taco. I got the Al Pastor tacos which were alright. Nothing too special. Probably good have gotten better, cheaper tacos nearby.. I was starving so it still filled me. But I’ve had better. That said the service was soo nice. Left me alone but still asked if I needed anything. Super quick. I was in and out for 30 minutes.

Google
After walking past two servers at the front door and not even being acknowledged. I made my way to the bar. After a few minutes I was finally greeted with a to-go order saying my delivery was ready(I’m not a doordasher or Grubhub driver!). The bartender was nice and made the experience better but everyone else seemed as if they didn’t want to be there or just didn’t care. The ceviche was Mexican style and tasty, chicken tacos were good, but the esquites was far from any street corn snack I’ve ever had…it was regular canned corn swimming in juice with cojita and cilantro sprinkled on top. I definitely won’t be back. Very disappointed!

Google
Chile en Nogada all year, that tastes like my Mexico City childhood deserves an award. Cant wait to come back this is top Mexican real food with a relaxed Brooklyn crowd family style but cosy fun atmosphere.

Google
Lovely restaurant. There was a wide variety of food and drink options and all were fantastic. The tamales and chiles en nogada were shop stoppers; highly recommend both!

Google
I lived in LA for a long time and was having a hard time finding Mexican food I enjoyed as much as out west. THIS is the spot. The tacos in particular are delicious and the mezcal tamarind margarita is my go to every time. I do not live close to this restaurant and yet it worth making the trek every time. Everyone who works here is lovely. Arthur took great care of us last time! Highly recommend.

Google
Living near Mesa Coyoacan is dangerous because their food is just beyond delicious. My friend is Mexican and owns an avocado farm, he said the food here tastes like his grandma’s. My fav is the garlic shrimp. My husband always orders Enchilada Verde. It’s always a good time here. When the weather is nice, you can sit outside but the inside seating is also very nice and cozy. It could be loud when busy (which mostly is) but who can talk too much when the food is so good.

Google
Excellent elevated regional Mexican food. Definitely pricier and smaller portioned but very high quality. Pibil and molé and tortillas are phenomenal. Salsas are great. Service can be inconsistent and at times so are prices.

Yelp
The tres leches alone was stellar! And I'm a tough critic. I had the Al pastor torta. It was good but I wouldn't order it again. But that cake made the trip all worth it.

Yelp
Food delicious, classic Mexican, not pretentious , service on point, not overbearing. Ambience; this is a beautiful place, the sun radiates, the wood, the mirrors,.

Yelp
Not bad for a late night option. The tacos were pretty solid, we got the al pastor and chicken tinga which were both very tasty. The salsas are all pretty different with good flavor. The enchiladas roja were just ok, the tortillas were kinda flimsy and broke easily but the sauce was good. All of the aguas frescas were pretty good, especially the watermelon one; the horchata was ok, but needed more cinnamon and I think to be on the stove a tad longer (didn't taste like it sat long enough and wasn't as thick as it should be). 3.5 stars is probably the perfect score for this place but I'll be generous and round up. Would order just the tacos and aguas fresca next time most likely.

Yelp
Oooooh boy, is this place great! This restaurant features some of the best Mexican food in Brooklyn. Everything is super savory. My go-to is the enchiladas verde. Solid Guac and chips as well! This past trip I also tried the tortilla soup which was very tasty and smokey. The staff always super kind and helpful. The restaurant itself is cozy even when it's busy.

Yelp
Solid venue for live music. Sound quality is great. Virtually no seating, though; you will be on your feet for the entirety of any show you attend. They have a *very* limited amount of seating for disabled individuals, and don't take reservations for it. We contacted them ahead of the show and were told to request it when we arrived. We did so, but it was entirely full. Someone said they were trying to find (?) more chairs, but none materialized. I can walk, but cannot stand for long periods without my balance failing. I spent the show propped between a pillar and a trash can, leaning on a metal fence. We were celebrating my child's 26th birthday, but instead of a carefree evening my companions spent the show being concerned for my welfare I wrote to the venue the next day, but nobody thought it important enough to respond. Not exactly a community-friendly venue.

Yelp
Everything about this restaurant feels like a precious secret you just got invited into. Cozy, friendly atmosphere, excellent service, and the food -- it is a revelation. After seeing the movie about the owners, I Carry You With Me, my son and I decided we had to try the chef's signature dish, which is featured in the film. The dish is called chiles en nogada and it is delicate, complex, and satisfying. A real treat! You know you've discovered an exceptional restaurant when you find yourself thinking of the last meal you ate there months later. Mesa Coyoacan is just that kind of place.

Yelp
What can I complain about this restaurant? My personally favorite thing to eat here looks like none of them. My husband loves here because they have steak and eggs for breakfast. I'm in other hand. I already tried grilled fish, ceviche shrimp or other dishes. None is my cup of tea, honestly. Today I order Nopal Asado; it is grilled cactus top with Oaxacan cheese and rajas con crema. I kind of like it. I know now what should I order when I come to this Maxican place. Limitation of food I like but I can make it works.

Yelp
I had a great experience here! I liked the nice atmosphere, which was lively without being too loud. We started with the guacamole, which was great. It came with a unique salsa and homemade corn chips. I ordered the Chile Relleno Vegetariano for my main, which is a vegetarian stuffed pepper. It looked small at first, but ended up being the perfect portion in combination with the chips & guacamole. It was delicious! The ingredients melded so well together and I especially liked that the pumpkin seeds provided a good crunch to the dish. One of my friends really liked her tacos, but my friend who ordered the chicken enchiladas verdes said that while the flavor was good, the dish was a bit dry. It seems that based on our experience and the Yelp reviews, some dishes are a hit and some are a miss. Luckily, my dishes were a hit and overall I think is a good local spot!

Yelp
First trip to Brooklyn NYC and we wanted to try something local and truly NY. So Mexican food it is! Service was impeccable. The charming young host welcomed us like it was his own home. The brisket tacos are tasty. The chicken quesadillas were juicy and delicious. The mushroom tacos were unbelievably good...had that umami in spades. Cosy little place in a lively and diverse neighbourhood. Muchos gracias

Yelp
We decided that is our last time here. We have been coming for a year and were loving it initially but the food is getting worse each time we are here. Today was the bottom. The fish tacos we got were the worst we got here. And one of them had a very bad smell. We told the waiter just to inform and all we got was 'ah sorry'. Like it was expected after paying $14 for a spoon size of guac and $18 for 3 sad looking tacos. The drinks are missing tequila as well. Very sad to give up on our fav Williamsburg mexican place but we gave them 3 shots. Thinking maybe 'they were having a bad day' or 'maybe it was us' but It only got worse each time. Today we are sure it's them. Ambiance is getting better for sure though. They have this high table now.

Yelp
Where do I begin! The food was DELICIOUS, the guacamole was flavorful and done just right (perfect amount of salt, acidity, onions). I got the Pulpo y chorizo tacos and I wishhhhh I had more. I heard no complaints around the table other than we were still hungry and wanted more. The place works well for groups, I saw another group (other than ours) and the place seated everyone and functioned well. Staff was friendly. Another pro was that the bathroom was clean and well decorated. Only thing I'd say is that the margaritas don't really taste like anything but tequila. The mango and watermelon margaritas tasted the same and the only way to tell them apart was by its colored appearance. Also, I'd probably skip out on dessert over here. They were no good. Got the flan and it was not real flan (consistency was thick and did not bounce like normal flan) and didn't taste that good.

Yelp
Excellent place Great for a date night Spacious Ominous Good decor Good location Friendly service Affordable Delicious cocktails Just wish the fish tacos were battered and fried Will be returning soon.

Yelp
The best place in the area for authentic Mexican food. Love the food, the staff are always friendly and attentive and the drinks are amazing!

Yelp
This is a nice place to go for dinner in East WB, and I'm glad to be trying out new places beyond Win Son. Loves: + Good food. Love me some mole enchiladas ($22) + Love their margs as they have many flavors and extra spicy levels ($14) + Cute ambiance, esp the staircase with lights and plants + Friendly staff + Walk-ins were easy for Sunday dinner on the night we went Good food, good place, and good company. Thanks, Mesa Coyoacan!

Yelp
This place is absolutely incredible! The experience from start to finish was amazinggggg. We went for my friend's birthday and they sat us immediately when we got there. The space is so stunning how they have it setup. The decor is funky and the vibes are just so good. The music had us dancing all night long! We got drinks and they were affordable and so delicious. We then went into the appetizers where we got the esquites and guacamole. They were both so fresh and tasty. We then went into our mains and the portions were so good for the price. I got the chicken mole and it was so velvety. It paired perfectly with the sauces they give for the tacos so pro tip: make sure you ask for them on the sides! The rice and plantains were done fantastically as well! We ended with the churros and they were so tasty, definitely a must try. 10/10

Yelp
Came on a Sunday afternoon and there were plenty of seats. I was catching up with a friend for three hours so it was nice of them to let us stay. Food and drinks were good. Watermelon Margarita seemed like it was made with real juice and it was refreshing. I got the brunch plate with carne asada. I love the plants around the restaurant. They have outdoor seating. There is a small credit card fee.

Yelp
Popped by for a quick late date during the week. No reservations and we got sat quickly. The food was very yummy. The tacos dorados were very juicy and savory and my boyfriends pollo con mole was superb and tender. I was in a more soupy mood so i went with the sopa azteca. It wasn't as spicy or thick as the other ones i've had, but still okay. Would probably get something else next time
google avatar

Yelp
I had high hopes for dinner here given the inclusion of a few dishes that are rare around these parts. Chiles en nogada and huitlacoche tacos? Sign me up anytime. We ended up sharing elotes and guac, and I had the aforementioned huitlacoche tacos. Sadly these were not the same well-marinated morsels bursting with flavor that I remembered from my last time having them at Calaca. Not bad at all, but at the same time not especially memorable.
google avatar

Farah K.

Yelp
Ambience was a bit dark for my like but was def feeling the 90s music that they were playing. Was very disappointed w the esquites as it was soupy; I've had way better esquites. Chicken Tamale were bland; street tamales are better according to my friend. Fish tamales weren't bad. Chicken poblano didn't look appealing and the maduros were super dry. Fish tacos was mediocre and lacked flavor. Enchiladas Rojas was not spicy at all despite stating so in the menu. Keep in mind I'm an ethnic person. I must say the desserts were much for flavorful than the apps/entrees. Another thing that came to our attention was the food came out very quick and didn't taste fresh. Lastly, we felt very rushed. Thankfully, our waiter was excellent! This is a spot to come and chill but not for food, sadly.
google avatar

yiannis p.

Yelp
I really like this place. The ambiance is nice--if, maybe, a little dark & brooding for brunch--& the food is delicious. I had a vegetarian torta & did not miss the meat at all; the shredded Oaxacan cheese, combined with the refried beans, mimicked the mouth feel & savoriness of meat well. The guacamole & totopos were excellent, & the salsa boracha made with dark Mexican beer was a real unexpected delight. I'll definitely be back for chiles enogadas season.

Yelp
One star only solely for b***s*** attitude of the staff here. We were a group of 7 people who went there for dinner and literally gave them business of $650 plus with 25 pct mandatory service fees. This forced tipping is called entitlement when you demand it for serving loads of attitude on a plate. In the beginning the service was decent but as the night progressed and our orders increased, the attitude of our server became negative and rude. You might wonder post pandemic the restaurants would become more welcoming and like bigger orders, but sadly there is no cure for bad behavior. At the end of our night, we wanted to order few more glasses of wine, to our shock we were told we can't order more than two as the kitchen was almost closing. We heard the other server saying- tell them we can only serve two. Some strategic decision I'm sure Seriously with 50 mins to go for closing, what's the logic with then offering us two glasses of wine in place of four.... Genius!!! The two shittiest glasses were served with the stalest wine possible. We left it without finishing it with bad taste in our mouth even worse impression in our head. Mesa Coayacan, you were just one time wonder, you really disappointed me this time.
google avatar

Ricardo H.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I ever had in NYC! The staff were so friendly and cool. I really loved it and can't wait to go again!
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Went here with my friend on a Tuesday night. The service was very nice and friendly and we were seated promptly without a reservation. I ordered the tacos Dorado and my friend ordered the sopa azteca(chicken tortilla soup). We also ordered guacamole to start. The guacamole in our opinion was creamy but missing some seasoning and a little spice. Maybe this is the way this region of Mexico makes the guacamole? Also their chips are a bit harder than your normal tortilla chip. They also served us 3 types of salsa my favorite being the Verde and my friend loved the habanero. On to the mains, I enjoyed the tacos Dorado, the chicken was moist, the salsa it was in was flavorful and I was happy. My friend also loved his soup and would order it again. Overall we were satisfied with our main dishes. I would come back and try another dish next time.
google avatar

William P.

Yelp
All food fresh and authentic. A step above in terms of types of food combos on the menu. Good service too.
google avatar

Mena M.

Yelp
We had two different types of tacos as well as the ceviche (which wasn't really ceviche) and the food was incredibly bland. The only semi-redeeming part of the meal were the churros. The service was good which is why I'm giving this two stars.
google avatar

Julia F.

Yelp
Bienvenidos a la mesa de chef Ivan Garcia! I knew fate meant for me to eat at this neighborhood gem when I saw the framed image of Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera above my dining companion's head. Santa Frida siempre cuida! Every aspect of the meal was on point punctuated by our server's 5 star level of attentiveness. He noticed the one corn tortilla left in our basket before we did, offered me another Reposado as I placed my glass down from taking a final sip of my first, and innocuously removed what wasn't needed from our table top as our conversation seamlessly continued. Must try dishes are the Hongos y Huitlacoche Tacos and the Ceviche de Pulpo; however, Chef Ivan's Pollo con Mole Poblano is EPIC! I would literally dip everything in this mole, including myself, if I knew how to make it at home. Between the licks of mole and glimpses of Frida, I fell into a Coyoacán-itis. My next visit can't come soon enough.

Melissa W.

Yelp
Great outdoor area to sit in and the food was pretty good, our server was really nice and even had the kitchen make a serving of guacamole fresh given our friend was allergic to certain ingredients. Would definitely come back when in the area.
google avatar

Braxton B.

Yelp
For being a really nice restaurant, the staff have terrible customer service skills. Their attitudes just seemed pre-occupied, and unhappy. Not a single person gave off any sort of good energy/ upbeat vibe and the service itself was very slow. The guy who sat us turned out to be the manager and I was so shocked because when seating us he was not hospitable and definitely didn't give off the vibe of a manager. Very unprofessional. But whatever I came for the food and margaritas and not to make friends with the staff. For starters we ordered chips and guacamole, the cucumber margarita, and my friend had the hibiscus spicy margarita. The cucumber margarita.. meh just alright and the hibiscus spicy margarita was VERY spicy but pretty good. The guacamole though.... they should be embarrassed to be serving it the way they are. WHERES THE FLAVOR !! Literally just mashed up avocado with nothing much else in it. I asked our server if we could get jalapenos or something to give it some spice or flavor and she said they couldn't do that. Our server also seemed a little new because she didn't seem to know the menu very well when we had questions when ordering. We finished our first margarita before our food came out and were never asked again if we wanted another. Our food was brought out by someone else and not our server. We later hunted someone else down to get in another drink order. For the food my friend got the steak plate, it came with mole, beans and cactus. He said he loved it and honestly looked amazing. I got the de cochinita pibil tacos and WOW OMG they were delicious !!!! *CHEFS KISS* I also had the octopus ceviche and it was VERY good as well. If you like seafood then definitely get. If you're craving a yummy taco packed with flavor then get these same ones as well. All in all aside from the guacamole the food was delicious. Mesa Coyoacan has a great chef, and pretty ambiance but should really reconsider hiring better staff with better customer service skills to make the entire experience of this restaurant whole.

Yelp
A low key gem in Williamsburg, fantastic spot for tacos and cocktails. I had the al pastor tacos and were delicious! The mezcal watermelon margs are very much needed. Staff and service was great and warming!

Yelp
Wasuppppp Yelpers! YOU MUST GO HERE. My friends and I came across this place on a random Monday...and boy was I happy about it. So I'm a dessert first type of guy ( get that palate going) and we ordered the Tres Leches and Churros. Honestly the Tres Leches was just okay ( the fruit base is a turn off). Now to GRAND PRIZE...the freaky next level coconut Churros served with Cajeta and Abuelita Chocolate. My mind was literally blown how fresh and delicious these suckers were. The drinks were also amazing. Top self margaritas, with a variety of flavors and we made sure we tried them all lol. My personal favs were the cucumber and watermelon. For dinner I indulged in the Enchiladas Rojas and I almost ate the plate. I also managed to fork a couple of plates lol. The braised lamb dish and Ceviche were also great. So let's just say I'll be back because I plan on trying the whole menu.
google avatar

Emily O.

Yelp
Loved this place! The vibes were super chill and there is lots of outdoor seating. The menu had lots of options. I ordered Camarones al Ajillo and thought they were sooo good. The portion was a good size and even came with the shrimp heads. The shrimp was super flavorful. They also had lots of drink options which I didn't try but would love to return to try out! We'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
Pretty average Mexican food in a relatively out of the way location. Right off the L train, it's a solid food option in East Williamsburg with ample outdoor seating on a Saturday night at 7 PM. Service was pretty spotty and food was as expected, but this is not somewhere I would go out of my way to try again, unfortunately. If you dine here, I would try the chicken mole entree.

Dominika M.

Yelp
I wanted to try their enchiladas de mole and wow!! chicken was not dry like from other places, the mole sauce was amazing!! I ate it all!! Great service, and great atmosphere.
google avatar

Jodi F.

Yelp
Delicious Mexican food in Brooklyn. We started with the guacamole and it was tasty and flavorful. I really liked the mole enchiladas and my husband liked the carne asada. Great flavors and the mole was rich and yummy. I'm glad our friends took us to this spot that's local to them. We enjoyed it.
google avatar

Julietissima M.

Yelp
We've been going to this place for a few years now, and love it every time. Mesa Coyoacan is all about its Chiles Enogada. A true Mexican delicacy that's hard to find in the city. Accompany that with a really great cocktail and you're set! The other food on the menu is also great, but for me, the Chile is what really stands out!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food, great customers service I have only one concern is the lady outside is very rude But after that nice place
google avatar

Philis L.

Yelp
Went to this restaurant on a Sunday night. Very chill ambience. Everything ordered was a 10/10. Highly recommend! Do yourself a favor and get the Enchiladas Verdes!
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
Fairly random outing led us to grab a table outside here and do a little brunch/lunch. Very solid option if you're looking for something in the area. The guac was good but the salsa it came with made it even better. The enchiladas Rojas were really tasty and so were the huevos con chorizo. Love those refried black beans! Overall, good food and hospitality :)
google avatar

Jenny W.

Yelp
What a surprise pandemic find in Brooklyn! Excellent option for delivery tacos. I hate how fish tacos are usually fried, so I was excited to see they were specified as grilled here. The avocado salsa here is a must have (ask for more if you're getting it delivered), and pairs perfectly with the fish. If you've got a friend, the platter of make your own tacos is a great deal. I haven't tried the other tacos, but my friend had good things to say about them as well. Oh, and if you're hankering for something sweet, the churros are an excellent way to cap off your meal.
google avatar

Sugeidy P.

Yelp
Ok. First and foremost. The owner, not very nice, seemed distracted as we walked in. For a Monday the place was full. But she seemed annoyed to have to sit us. We proceed to order. We got margaritas, and modelos. No complaints the mezcal margarita was amazing! The chips and quac, was the best thing here. Now the food. We asked if the green sauce was spicy, the lady said, it's not spicy, no one ever complains. We proceed to order the chicken enchiladas, and shrimp enchiladas. The green sauce was SPICY. She lied. She then said oh well, there's nothing she can do. We were annoyed. She also came off stein when we asked her to refill our waters. Will I be back. Only for drinks. Because the food, was not what we were looking for. And the service was undesirable.

Yelp
Came here with a friend at 10pm (we were super hangry by that time), thankfully it wasn't super packed that we sat down right away. Loved their ambiance, it was pretty dark inside and loved their decoration... super cute! We started off ordering margaritas and they were SO good, and pretty strong ;) It has a very spicy salty rim, which I think made the margarita. To start off we ordered the Elote and guacamole. The elote was delicious, a little spicy for me but my friend didn't think so. It had such a great taste and the perfect ratio of chilli powder and cotija cheese. Their guacamole was also very tasty. We cleaned the whole bowl. We both had tacos: carne asada & el pastor. AMAZING. One thing, they only came with one soft shell taco... should be two. The meat had such a great taste, hands down fantastic. We then ordered the tres leche for dessert. If you happen to go, I highly suggest you order. Thank me later. Overall, great experience, our waitress was very friendly and super attentive. Definitely a place I would come back too!

Julianna M.

Yelp
Top notch Mexican food. Excellent. The margaritas were also great, and they even accommodated a request to make one weaker and one stronger without extra charge. Both dinner entrees were awesome. Will definitely go again.

Yelp
I came here one night after missing dinner with friends but still wanting to go out. I'd previously been here on a date in the summer during the prime of NYC outdoor dining and remembered really enjoying the food. We sat inside, which was a lot cozier then i remembered, granted, I only came inside previously to use the rest room. Ok, so a small space but very accommodating. The server sat us at a large table that is for groups but told us we could share the space. It felt very communal, and frankly i don't mind. We ordered, the cactus, corn, ceviche and guacamole for apps. My cousin had the steak and i had the garlic shrimp for dinner. For drinks we had premium margaritas. As far as drinks, they really only do Margaritas and wine so if your looking for a wide range of cocktails this may not be for you. I enjoyed my Margaritas ( i had two), although i prefer them without OJ this was still pretty good. I was really excited to try the cactus app. As far as texture it's truly just an experience you have to try for yourself if you've never had. I didn't hate it but i also didn't love it. They no longer carry the octopus ceviche i fell in love with so we had to settle for the shrimp, which is ok. Honestly once the server told me it was made with ketchup i could no longer enjoy (i despise ketchup lol) we loved the corn appetizer and guac and chips could never go wrong! Lastly we really enjoyed the mains. The garlic shrimp was really tasty. The beans they give you kind of remind me of refried beans you get on baked goods when your in Central America except they are black beans. I remember being really cold and wearing my jacket the entire dinner, as we were sitting pretty close to the door. They have curtains but they were tied up so the air just kept bustling in. A staff member who i would guess was a manager asked me if i was ok and i told him i was cold. He apologized but kind of was giving me the impression he couldn't do anything about it, but i noticed he did close one of the curtains which was really kind. Ill more then likely be back

Yelp
Most of those who venture to Williamsburg hop off the L at Bedford and never look back. However, if you've been looking for a trendy yet authentic cantina to consume delicious yet strong margaritas and overstuffed yet affordable tacos at, you may want to hop off at Graham instead. We chose to eat out on a miserably freezing night. The only deciding factor was walking distance so expectations were low. It may have been due to the temperature, but on this Taco Tuesday, we were seated right away. We started off our meal, as one should, with drinks. I ordered their CLASSIC MARGARITA ($14): appropriately strong and so refreshing, with their use of freshly-squeezed lime and orange juice. He ordered their PALOMA ($14): it was equally refreshing, with freshly-squeezed grapefruit! Actions speak louder than words-- another round of these silver tequila drinks followed. Now, food: Chips and guac is a comfortable choice, but we decided to spice up our appetizer repertoire with NOPAL ASADO ($9): grilled cactus topped with stringy Oaxacan cheese with a creamy poblano pepper sauce ladled on. The grilled cactus was so smoky in flavor and succulent....(haha), I would definitely recommend trying it! We ordered two mains: PULPO Y CHORIZO TACOS ($16): Comes in 3, overstuffed with sautéed octopus, chorizo, and cubed potatoes, delivered in a cactus tortilla and topped with avocado salsa. The octopus was smoky and tender, which was nicely complemented by the savory chorizo bits. I really enjoyed the shift in texture when I got in bites of the crispy potatoes. These were some of the most unique tacos I've tried! POLLO CON MOLE POBLANO ($23): Roasted chicken, plantains, and rice were slathered with this traditional gravy. The mole was very rich and earthy-- perfect for the cold weather. The chicken meat was so tender; it didn't take much to fall off the bone! If you are craving authentic, rustic Mexican cuisine and are in the area, I would give Mesa Coyoacan a try! The price is not cheap, but also not unreasonable. Everything on the dinner menu is below $30, with appetizers and tacos within $10-$20 and the plates falling in the upper range. The cocktails range from $14-$16.

Yelp
This place was a lot of fun, and had delicious food that was just the right size. Whether you want to split some small plates with friends or dive in for a plate of your own tacos, seems you can't go wrong here. I was glad that my friend in Brooklyn recommended we eat here on the one night that I was in town. The bar staff at Mesa Coyoacan were friendly and helpful. Quite a good little spot, and very convenient to the L for the ride back to Manhattan.

Yelp
I decided to try this restaurant but was a bit skeptical due to the customer service reviews on the staff. I am glad I decided to try it out for myself. Our server was Nathan, very friendly and attentive, no issues, we enjoyed the service! The food was great as well. First was the appetizer of Guacamole and Chips, it was good a little steep at $14 but everything is going up *shrug* My boyfriend had the pollo con mole, I had the carne asada plate. Enjoyed everything especially the handmade tortillas. The only thing is we did find their Mole to be a bit too sweet for our taste. I am Mexican, just not use to the mole I grew up on. Will come back again, excited to try more off their menu. I was not disappointed.

Yelp
We were looking for a dinner place close to Brooklyn Steel before our show and found Mesa Cocyoacan. It's not a big restaurant, but they have some long tables and a bar area. We weren't able to be seated until our whole party was there, so we got drinks at the bar to begin with. Their watermelon margaritas are refreshing and delicious! I would add the jalapeno for a little bit of a kick! We were all pleasantly surprised by our entrees, as all 3 of us are from california. - Sopecitos: first time trying these and I really enjoyed! small corn tortilla topped with beans, carne asada, and salsas. Super flavorful and one of my favorites that night! - al pastor tacos: I actually liked that they only give you one tortilla. I always end up taking the second one off. The meat wasn't too salty and the pineapple added great flavor. The meats were PLENTIFUL We didn't really like the shrimp ceviche we ordered... the shrimp was overcooked and it was bathed in a tomato sauce. The accompanied chips were BOMB though! I'd definitely come back again! But just know, these are SIT DOWN prices.. don't expect taco truck prices!

Yelp
Love love love love love. I ordered takeout and was so pleasantly surprised with how delicious, flavorful, and unique this spot was. The tacos were the biggest hit of the night. The Cochinita Pibil tacos were absolutely delicious- spicy, flavorful, and surprising. The pulpo y chorizo tacos were also incredible- such a unique combination and it actually worked perfectly. I also enjoyed the tamales as a starter. The mole in the pollo con mole poblano was very good, but I didn't love the plantain/chicken combination. But that's just personal preference. This spot was wonderful, delicious, and made for a fun meal at home. I can't wait to go in person!

Yelp
We were pretty underwhelmed when we dined at Mesa. The food definitely didn't live up to the hype. The service was pretty good. Our waitress was kind and on the talkative side but she was very attentive. We ordered guacamole and chips, tacos de suadero, and the enchilada de mole. The guacamole (3/5) was decent and fell kind of flat with the lack of flavors. You really only tasted the avocados and it could definitely use some more seasonings and lime. The suadero tacos (3/5) were not very good either. The brisket had little to no beef flavor. It tasted like it was reheated after sitting in the kitchen the whole day. It was topped with onion, cilantro and avocado salsa but none of these flavors really stood out either. We had to add on the guac and extra salsa to add flavor to the tacos. The enchilada de mole (3/5) was interesting and nothing like what we expected. The shredded chicken tasted like it was steamed and had no flavor. The mole was oddly sweet and didn't have the flavor profile I was expecting. The best part of this dish was the black beans which was very flavorful and went well with the queso fresco. Overall, this dish was quite small (three very thin enchiladas). We also ordered a watermelon margarita and paloma. Both were quite average and the salt was too overpowering in contrast to the actual drink. None of the food was terrible but none of it really stood out. The flavors seemed pretty far from traditional Mexican food. We might have went in with too high of expectations but I wouldn't recommend Mesa.

Yelp
Pretty dark spot. More of a romantic ambiance. I had a special margarita which I must say was delicious. I also ordered a Mexican sandwich which I really enjoyed. Filling and worth it. My boyfriend on the other hand wasn't that happy with his choice of dishes. He does t eat meat and ordered extra rice and beans with his order and didn't seem as if he got either EXTRA of. Hence to say he left there still hungry. Not sure if I would return cause I've had better Mexican food and would love to try other places.
