The Best Places To See And Be Seen In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"A red velvet rope outside a restaurant in SF is about as rare as bare shoulders in June. But you’ll find one at Meski. The two-story Afro-Latin and Ethiopian restaurant is part-owned by Draymond Green, and that’s one reason why this place requires that rope. The other is its daily late-night hours and club-like atmosphere with low-lighting and pulsing music. Most days, you’ll see people waiting for a seat outside in everything from sparkly dresses to Curry jerseys at this Lower Nob Hill spot. It's a jolt of energy to the city’s usual Oura-dictated curfew, so anyone rebellious enough can shun their early bedtime, sip on coffee-spiked cocktails, and pretend the city’s nightlife scene is always like this. Anyone who can list all four Curry kids by name" - julia chen 1, patrick wong

Go to Meski for the scene over the food - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Pristine upholstered couches, a 7-year-old in a Curry jersey, a full-length sequin dress—just a few things we saw during a meal at Meski, a buzzy spot in Lower Nob Hill co-owned by Draymond Green (ever heard of him?) and the chef-owner of Alamar. The two-story restaurant is the neighborhood’s see-and-be-seen destination fit for just about anyone who wants a bit of a spotlight, whether you’re posted up at the glowing upstairs bar, rolling in for a dressed-up group dinner before a night out, or catching a game at the other bar downstairs. video credit: Taylor Gomez With a velvet rope-flanked line out the door and a gigantic centerpiece hanging above a mini-spiral staircase, the scene outshines the food. The Afro-Latin and Ethiopian dishes range from OK to solid. Skip the lukewarm tiradito, and go for the pollo guisado sambusas to start and the yetsom platter for your entree. But you’re here for people-watching, cocktails, and atmosphere, and on that front, Meski always delivers. Food Rundown Pollo Guisado Sambusas Our favorite dish here. The stewed chicken filling arrives steaming and tender in a golden brown shell. It’s three per order, and you’ll want at least one apiece. PlayMute video credit: Taylor Gomez Meski Yetsom Platter Another hit—especially the buttery plantains—but you can find equally good, if not better, vegetarian samplers at Ethiopian restaurants across town. PlayMute video credit: Taylor Gomez Kitfo Tartare A solid starter. The injera chips are crunchy and tangy, and a nice vehicle for the kitfo. Rabo Encendido Casarecce A bit one-note, but there’s a good amount of shredded oxtail. It gets the job done if you need something heartier after downing a coffee-spiked cocktail on an empty stomach. PlayMute video credit: Taylor Gomez Tiradito You can skip this. It’s pretty, but a little bland. PlayMute video credit: Taylor Gomez" - Julia Chen

Draymond Green Opens a ‘Modern Afro-Latin Ethiopian’ Restaurant in San Francisco With Two Industry Vets | Eater SF

"A new restaurant project led by Warriors star Draymond Green together with AlaMar Dominican Kitchen and Sobre Mesa chef Nelson German and restaurateur Guma Fassil (of Meskie’s Kitchen and Garden) will open at 1000 Larkin Street in Nob Hill on Friday, March 7; a press release says it will "reimagine contemporary Afro-Latin cuisine through an Ethiopian lens." Diners can expect a mix of dishes such as sambusas with berbere-spiced beef and the Dominican stew sancocho, and the bar menu will continue along that theme with cocktails featuring Caribbean and Ethiopian ingredients and flavors, per the San Francisco Chronicle. "It’s merging two diasporas," Fassil told the news outlet. "The traditional ingredients of Ethiopian cuisine and mixing it with the passion and adventure and seasonality of Dominican cuisine." The concept is named after Fassil’s mother." - Dianne de Guzman

This place is SO GOOD. We had the best server- Magaly was incredibly attentive, kind, and full of good energy. She seriously made our experience. The whole vibe is cozy and sleek at the same time, and the food…..wow. Absolutely fabulous. The pollo guisado sambusas were so good we actually ordered them twice- yes, we finished the first order and immediately asked for another. Don’t judge- just try them and thank me later!

Google
What an amazing meal! Staff was so nice, warm, and friendly. Food was quick to come and to die for! The chicken sambosas were unbelievable! Best dish of the night. Everything was great though. Highly would recommend. Drinks awesome too!

Google
Unbelievable! Just WOW! First time and will not be my last. Staff was incredibly friendly. Sat at the bar and ended up getting 2 beers with food. Literally everything I ordered was PERFECT! Had the salmon and chicken then the rice + beans. OMG! the flavors + spices were outstanding! For just myself I spent $100 but was totally worth it. I have to mention Jordan and Rutha for a great first experience. See you all again soon! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Rice also tasty.....also tried vegetarian plate that had collards,,beans platanos etc..good!! ...cocktails..I'm a Selena fan so had the bidibidi bam bam and later the rosa peruana...both sweet n refreshing...rest time... here finish my plate...ok...im goid now..dessert...Ethiopian donuts yes!! Tres leches chocolate cake ...also yes... The fusion of both these cuisines worked...I'm glad I tried this spot...thank you for a delicious meal!

I was on a night walk mission trying to get my 12,000 steps in before the day ended and came across this gorgeous gem of a place. I'd heard about it opening months back but came upon it last night serendipitously and decided to treat myself. The food was ahh-mazing! The appetizer was topnotch. I had a tough time deciding. The entré really made my palate dance. I love the afro-latin fusion theme, it hits a spot I didn't even know needed to be hit! The ambiance is fantastic. Music selection was great, albeit, played a little too loud. The bar tender (I sat at the table) came across as tired or having an off day, at least when it came to serving/engaging with me, but the hostess who welcomed me in, and the server who brought my food out were both super cordial and very engaging and patient with my questions. This is a really great place to meet up with friends and to take out of town guests. The oxtail pasta and yucca fries were chef's kiss! I loved the pina colada coctele as it was just the right level of sweet. The Ethio honey wine was way too sweet for me but it was my first time and I'm glad I tried it. You gotta expose yourself to different things to discover new favorites! Go to Meski, it's a total vibe.

Google
Meski is a must-visit! I went for both dinner and brunch, and everything was amazing. The Beef Tibs Hash for brunch was full of flavor, and the pancakes were perfectly fluffy. For dinner, the Beef Tibs and Lamb Jabella were top-notch, and the sambusas were a perfect appetizer. The Buna Martinis were a standout — smoky and rich, while the Meski Spritz was light and refreshing. Great food, great drinks, and a fantastic vibe. Highly recommend!

Google
Overall very pleased with one opportunity Parking wasn’t easy but it is San Francisco. Gentleman up front that checked us in was very welcoming. Our server Isabel was pleasant and helped answer all of our questions Caribbean g&t was good. Appetizers were fantastic including the chicken sambusa and plantain tibs - however not a lot of food for 3. The lamb was the highlight of the entrees followed by the chicken which was also excellent. The NY steak was a pretty big disappointment. It was cooked well and also very well seasoned however almost every piece had a ton of gristle. Donuts were as advertised - very tasty. The panna cotta was good but if we had to do it again we would have doubled up on the donuts. My wife loved the cafe con leche coffee We will be back !!!

Google
Amazing experience! Super flavorful food and great ambiance to match. The waiter was also very helpful and attentive! We were hesitant to get the tomahawk steak at first, but it became one of our favorite dishes (though definitely recommend at least four people to tackle it!)

Yelp
We specifically chose Meski before our show at the Curran Theater because this is not a restaurant or food style we can find back home. The unique Latin and Ethiopian fusion is distinct and did not disappoint. Dinner reservations last 90 minutes. They ask you to order all your food at once and they course it for you over that 90 minutes which I love. You don't feel rushed. You can tell they have the pacing down. Our server was really nice and checked in frequently without hovering. Their supporting team was also amazing and kind. The food was top notch. The bone marrow and grilled oysters kicked us off with a bang, and the Tarrijo (sweet Latin-style bread with ice cream and fruits) was a perfect way to end the meal. The dim lighting and chic decor paired with the great food definitely make this worth a reservation. For my out of towners, I'd recommend ubering to and from here. In the dark, the neighborhood didn't feel the most safe to be walking through.

Yelp
What a super cute find! I really enjoyed my dinner at Meski! Arrived on time for my 7:45pm reservation and was immediately greeted by the hostess. Lucky for me, my friend had already made it and I was able to be seated with her right away. After some catching up. I was ready to peruse the menu. First thing, the decor here is stunning. All the greens and golds, I was in girly heaven. Definitely felt royal in there. The restaurant itself was cute, quaint, and perfect for a girls night. The waitress was amazing! She was super informative about the menu and seemed very passionate about Meski. I was too excited to try everything and I did! My absolute favorite was the start of the meal, The Sambusas and the tiradito were incredible. So flavorful and delicious. Out of the two starters, the tiradito was the star. I'm a sucker for raw salmon. For our mains, we both had the oxtail pasta. So comforting! Definitely an SF worthy dish. It was chilly out and this warmed my whole heart. Cant forget the drinks, I had the Bidi Bidi Bam Bam. Totally refreshing and fruity! Right up my alley. Lovely little night at Meski! I loved the new age modern twist on some classic ethiopian food. If i ever get the chance, ill definitely be back.

Yelp
Booked a last minute reservation with some friends on a Friday night; most peak times were booked up by that point but I'm glad we were still able to find a time that worked for us since we had some plans nearby in the area for after! We sat at a table upstairs, it was a little dark, but cool atmosphere inside. It wasn't too loud early in the evening so it was easy to talk to the group. We ordered a few cocktails, appetizers, and entrees to share. Good amount of gluten free options for those with dietary restrictions! I enjoyed my Ethiopian Milk punch cocktail - spirit forward (how I like it) and garnished with coco puffs. All the apps we shared were good, and nicely seasoned - the steak pintxos and tiradito were my favorites. The tomato salad had good seasonings, but the tomatoes seemed unripe. From the entrees, I tried the arroz con pollo which was decent but could have had a little more flavor. Everyone else thought the oxtail pasta was good and very rich. None of us were that hungry to get the larger items, but if I come back I'd be willing to try one of those. I definitely enjoyed the side of duck fat yuca fries, since those are some of my favorite types of fries!

Yelp
Meski is everything! The atmosphere, decor, service, food, and drinks were 10/10! We received a warm welcome upon arrival and were seated right away. Very intimate setting, The aesthetic was beautiful from the artwork to the chairs, and the bar. Good vibes all around. Jordan was a great server, very knowledgeable and helpful. All of his suggestions were spot on. The oxtail pasta was perfect. It had just the right amount of spice and sauce, I can't wait to come back and try it again! Everything is super flavorful, and delicious. Even the dessert! Parking is limited but they do have valet. He was friendly and very helpful as well. Overall, we had a great experience and I would definitely come back again.

Yelp
I've been a fan of Chef Nelson for a while and a huge Draymond Green stan, so when I heard about the opening of this restaurant it was an automatic yes. Luckily, it didn't disappoint! The afro-latin and Ethiopian fusion was right up my alley. We loved all of our food and the cocktails were great too. My fave bites were the Pollo Guisado Sambusas and the Meski Yetsom Platter. The service was friendly and attentive. The vibes are upscale and although it's a restaurant it still gives bar & lounge - so it's great for a date night, catching the Warriors game, or even a business meeting. Definitely check this place out if you're in the area.

Yelp
Meski is a really cool spot - loungy lush vibes on the second floor, darker lounge vibes when you take the stairs down. Arrived on a Saturday at 7 (it's definitely in the tenderloin) and the hostess said the valet wasn't there yet, but found street parking quickly. Speciality cocktails were great and different, but they also have a full bar and n/a mocktails. Apps were the highlight - loved the plantains, steak bites, potatoes, etc. all were small plates, but easy to share and loaded with flavor. Mains were ok - arroz con pollo was good and the meski veggie platter was fine. Next time I think I will just order all of apps and skip the mains. I'd say this spot is more of a cocktails and apps kind of place for future visits.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by my visit (1st) last night. I have seen the reviews and it seems the initial buzz has worn off a bit. I had downgraded my expectations accordingly but on a whim decided to try it. Glad I did. As others have noted they inherited the upscale vibe by the former restaurant The Saratoga. They only needed and did slight alterations to preserve the integrity of the interior and it works, with a nice / upscale feel that is perhaps not what you'd expect from a Lat Am / Ethiopian fusion place but they put a lot of thought into the menu and with the friendly staff and full restaurant the place has a unique charm that I will be enjoying more of. For me, though, the draw and primary focus is the food. I was surprised to see the ox tail dish because I thought I read from another reviewer that it disappeared. I confirmed with the server that they did indeed bring it back so I ordered it. Wow, that is a phenomenal dish. The heat from the spices is intense but they are blended perfectly with the ox tail, which was not fatty at all. The pasta is the perfect companion for the beef and along with what I think are sweety drop peppers this dish is a 10.5/10. Absolutely spot on and amazing. We ordered 2 of the tomato salads because the wife is a vegetarian. I really loved mine and again there is a kick to everything they do here so the fresh jalapeños provided a nice punch to a more classical tomato dish. The crunch of the small croutons made this a spectacular salad. 10/10. I ordered the duck fat yucca fries and I must not have paid attention to the menu that clearly states yucca because I was surprised when I was served. They are in fact yucca but that is only slightly different than a regular potato and the accompanying sauce is out of this world good so you will not miss a Kennebec in any way with these. 10/10. I tried 2 drinks which I don't see on the current online menu so I can't tell you what they were but the second one I tried won me over. It's a gin based drink with strawberries and other tasty additives. It's kind of like a spritz but it went down very very well with the spicy entrees. All in all I'm thrilled to have found a suitable date night spot nearby my residence and look forward to many returns. The one thing I'd ask the chef to consider though would be more vegetarian entrees. The meats obviously steal the show here but don't forget about our plant eating crowd please!

Yelp
I love this place so much. I've been twice for drinks and then a few weeks ago I went for brunch. The brunch was so delicious. We ordered the French toast and the shakshuka stew. Both items were incredible! They were so flavorful and cooked to perfection. The cookies and cream French toast is soo good it made me want more. I'm usually the person that orders savory for brunch, but I would definitely go back and get the French toast. I can't wait to come back here for dinner.

Yelp
This restaurant is new and maybe they are working out details, however, I expected more from the food. The flavors were lacking in everything we tried with the exception of the goat dish. The restaurant is beautiful and the ambiance in the restaurant and lounge are cozy, lively and upscale. Everything you could ask for. BUT the food was disappointing. I'll visit again in a few months.

Yelp
Overall, really good food and I would come back. I came around opening in April so I think they have a few kinks to work out that may already be figured out. The main one was parking. My friend thought she read they have valet, but apparently it's only Friday and Saturday. I took uber which is easiest but there are some lots nearby. The service was decent, but I did feel a little rushed throughout service. The food was overall really good! Having been to alamar & Sobre Mesa I expected good food here. Our pasta dish didn't come out hot but the flavor of the oxtail was amazing. We tried a tomato salad that I didn't love, so I'd probably opt for the gomen instead next time. The pollo guisado sambusas had great flavor as well. The bistec was cooked well, but overall the dish fell flat for me. For dessert, I'd skipped the pan a cotta. We shared everything so we could try a few items across the menu, but I expect the menu to change since they're still a new restaurant. The cocktails here are great. I loved the Ethiopian milk punch. Very beautiful space. We sat upstairs but there's also a lounge area downstairs.

Yelp
Meski is a vibey and chic restaurant with excellent service and delicious food. I think adding more dishes to the menu will benefit customers and the restaurant as the execution of the food is great and and customers would enjoy exploring more offerings from both African and Caribbean traditions. Only tried one cocktail and it was delicious. The downstairs lounge area was upbeat and I regret not checking out the drinks down there because I have read and heard that are different, if not better, than the upstairs dining room menu. Definitely would return and recommend Meski!

Yelp
I love Draymond Green and the Warriors and celebrity chefs and I love the Tenderloin neighborhood--which isn't that related to this review, because Meski is located in Lower Nob Hill (I firmly believe that the TL is South of Geary, and Meski is North of Geary so there.) I've been seeing Meski in the news and wanting to go (because Dominican-Ethiopian-Latin food? Yes please!), and finally made the time to do so! Luckily (or unluckily for my wallet because I will be back for brunch and to try more dishes), it exceeded my already-high expectations. Everything was unique and delicious--mains, appetizer, side, and the cocktails. Getting here: walk or take the bus. Maybe bike. Not much parking. The 90-minute dining limit scared us, but wasn't bad. Service is efficient. Upstairs has bar seating and a few tables and booths. It was pretty busy when we walked in just after 7pm on a Thursday. The lighting was dim (good for date night) but it also looked like there were some families and business groups eating there at the same time. Drinks: very good and unique. Appetizer: Marin Miyagi Oysters ($24.00). Unique and flavorful. Side: Duck Fat Yuca Fries ($10.00). Crispy, rich, well-seasoned but not overly-so, and great sauce (Korerima sazon, salsa Afrikana.) Mains: - Arroz Con Pollo ($32.00) . Great salsa verde and vegetables. Loved the grilling, flavor, spices, and rice. - Lamb Gemelli ($32.00). Unique, complex flavors. Drinks: - Pina Colada Spritz ($18), Caribbean G&T ($18). Wonderful, unique, refreshing, complex taste. Ambiance is upscale and service was helpful and attentive. Lots of staff and employees running around, but in a professional manner. Can't wait to come back to try more of their unique dishes--haven't seen these elsewhere in the Bay Area (or in other places for that matter.)

Yelp
The restaurant has seating and a bar upstairs and another bar downstairs with some limited seating. The service was friendly and helpful given the uniqueness of the food. The food was really flavorful. We had the chicken and steak. I'd say if you're looking for something different with lots of flavor give it a try.

Yelp
Such a nice treat at meski! We stopped by for some light bites and they had seating at the bar around 7pm on a Sat night. The steak ribs were super tender and juicy. The sauces were very flavorful. Service was fast and friendly!

Yelp
Food was great! Had the oxtail pasta--flavorful! And paired w the Rolled up pancake Ethiopian bread. Had a great mocktail w the ethiopian tamarind--bartender(Palmer) recco--so good! Would come back for sure.

Yelp
My wife and I looked forward to trying this new popular restaurant. Reservations are definitely recommended as we planned a week in advance. We were greeted promptly and shown to our high top table. My wife loves a good Pinot Noir but we noticed the pour appeared to be a little light. I ordered the Coconut Con Leche but they were out of this drink. For an appetizer we shared the Tibs De Maduros...the plantain and sauce were so flavorful. My wife is vegetarian and had the Meski Yetsom Platter. Once again, the best item on this sampler was the plantain as the beans, string beans and collard greens seemed to lack flavor. I wanted to try the lamb but it was unavailable. I ended up selecting the Arroz Con Pollo and it was tasty...especially the rice. Overall , a good experience but I was surprised they were out of my first two choices and it was only 6PM. We look forward to trying more restaurants in San Francisco.

Yelp
3.75 STARS Have a chicken tender kinda person in your life who's a Warriors fan and want to gently expand their palate? Meski. My sister is a huge Warriors fan and never had Ethiopian, Dominican, or Latin food (outside of burritos and quesadillas) so I knew Meski would be the perfect place to take her for her birthday. Opening in April 2025, Meski is the hyped resto from Draymond Green and Top Chef Alum, Chef Nelson (also owns alaMar Kitchen & Bar and Sobre Mesa). They took over Members Only which was previously The Saratoga. Draymond wasn't in the house but Chef Nelson was. Rezzies were hard to come by because it's a small dining space upstairs. First come, first serve at the bar. 90 minute dining limit. Gripe: We had weekday rezzies at 5 pm (not busy) and were seated at this weird makeshift table to the side of the bar. Our view was of the bar station and swinging kitchen door. M E N U Afro-Latin and Ethiopian Fusion Cuisine. Seasonal menu. Different menu for upstairs dining area and the lounge downstairs. They just launched Sunday brunch service. Full bar. D R I N K S Our sweet server kindly brought over two complimentary glasses of Tej, Ethiopian honey wine for my sister's birthday. F O O D * Kitfo Tartare: Raw beef tenderloin, nitir kibbeh oil, cured egg yolk, chervil, injera chips ($19): https://tinyurl.com/4cyhhp6j Great steak quality dressed in clarified butter creating a rich, silky mouthfeel but underseasoned. More berbere and/or mitmita please! Most of the flavor came from the injera chips' subtle tang. * Meski Tomahawk Bistec: 32 oz cream co. steak, pickled shallot, cashew salsa macha, awaze butter ($165): https://tinyurl.com/bd264dw7 - Requested medium rare: https://tinyurl.com/2cw4a3xu - Feeds 3 to 4 people Meski's signature dish and for good reason, the quality and cookery on the tomahawk was phenomenal. Nice smoky sear on the outside, perfectly medium rare, and incredibly juicy and tender with some nice fatty bits. FAT = FLAVOR. Beats the tomahawks I've had at steakhouses. I appreciate that they lightly salted the steak so you can appreciate the natural beefy taste but I couldn't detect the flavor of yhr cashew salsa macha and the pickled shallots didn't have much acidic punch. The aji dulce peppers (?) added bursts of mild sweetness and heat. * Habichuela Misir Wat: Dominican red kidney bean, spicy Ethiopian lentil ($9) Misir wat is my fav vegan dish and this fusion rendition was sorely disappointing. It tasted like an unseasoned watery bean stew, absent of any flavor and heat. * Dominican Vegetable Locrio: Yellow Dominican rice, sofrito, berbere ($8) Cooked well with tender grains but lacking the named aromatic spices. Also, the portion was quite small, more for one person. * Injera: Ethiopian Sour Flatbread ($4) Fresh, spongy texture. Very mild flavor. I prefer injera that's fermented longer with stronger sour flavor. Side Note: Usually, you can request a spice level for Ethiopian food so I asked if it was possible to make the kitfo and misir wat: spicy. They can't. Instead, we were given a bottle of Cholula (Mexican hot sauce) which was disappointing for an upscale resto. Hope they consider making a house hot sauce. S E R V I C E Fantastic service from all the staff we encountered. Our server was awesome; very warm and gracious. I told her we had to leave in 60 minutes (2nd rezzies at a rooftop bar) and she made it happen, thank you! I didn't catch her name but it was unique and she wore a head scarf. The busboys always kept our water glasses filled and the thoughtful bartender helped pack our leftovers. A M B I A N C E Very vibey, sexy date night, "see and be seen" kinda place with fashionistas and a lively Reggaeton playlist. They kept much of the furnishings from Members Only but added their own touches with paintings and greenery. Upstairs, there's 10 tables, 4 high tops, and bar seating. The downstairs lounge is moody with TVs for watching the game. P A R K I N G Street parking in the TenderNob/Lower Nob Hill area is rough! Nearest garages (1-2 minute walk) at 1101 Sutter and 80 Hemlock. Valet available on Friday and Saturday. Overall, ahhhhhmazing tomahawk steak that's worth the splurge but IMHO, Meski seems more like a place for the vibes. Unfortunately, I share the same sentiments as the 3 star (or less) reviews...the food was bland. I really hope they consider kicking up the seasoning several notches because fusion or not, Afro-Latin and Ethiopian cuisine should be flavorful, vibrant, and richly spiced. Never bland.

Hallie C.

Yelp
It's been a very long time since a meal genuinely blew me away! Definitely a nice spot for dates or special occasions with unique and flavorful dishes. Supposedly they have valet, but I found street parking. Service was thoughtful and quick, and I enjoyed the elegant ambiance Papi G: recommended by our waiter and tbh was quite good for a non-alcoholic cocktail. Probably the least notable part of our meal, but nonetheless tasty Pollo guisado sambusas: crispy and succulent with a nice blend of flavors and textures. I loved this Oxtail encendido gemelli: THE BEST DISH! Al dente pasta with juicy oxtail. It had the perfect balance of heat and subtle sweetness from the biquinho peppers. This was the stunner for the night East African donuts: I am not a sweets person and would never order something with white chocolate, but my friend wanted to try these and I'm so glad she did. This is a delicate dessert that's not too sweet; I'd describe it as a beignet with guava notes and an understated glaze dip. Didn't really taste the chamoy I'm not from the Bay but I'd definitely come back if I'm ever in town again! I can't stop thinking about the oxtail pasta lol

Yelp
This spot was pretty good. The plantains were delicious and the Injera plate was yummy, it could've been hotter though -- temperature wise. The staff was super friendly and very helpful. The downstairs area was cool if you want more of a lounge/bar experience.
google avatar

Mary Bryan O.

Yelp
Honestly this exceeded my expectations going in. I definitely prefer the lounge cocktails to the cocktails offered with dinner. The steak tartare and arroz con pollo were were my favorite dishes. The sambusas were good and the chicken was cooked well but I thought it was lacking in flavor comparatively. Service was great everything came out quickly and the kitchen coursed our dishes for us. Also they play very lively music! Definitely try the donuts if you have room for dessert- they were a mixture of salty and sweet with an airy dough.
google avatar

Kelly R.

Yelp
This place definitely lived up to the hype! The food is delicious and the restaurant has a great vibe. The chicken sambusas are good, but recommend ordering the yuca fries and dipping the sambusas in the sauce that comes with the fries. The standouts were the beef tartare and the arroz con pollo. Both were extremely flavorful and unique dishes! The staff were very friendly, attentive, and gave great recommendations on the menu. If you can't get a reservation for dinner, recommend going to their downstairs lounge/bar area. The cocktails are phenomenal and you can order some small bites down there too! There are a couple tvs, so if a game is on you can watch it with some great drinks, food and ambiance!

Yelp
Going in, I had very low expectations for this restaurant but it shocked me in every way possible. The food, service, ambiance--everything was absolutely fantastic! We got the pollo guisado sambusas (chicken samosas/empanadas), tibs de maduros (plantains), duck fat yucca fries, tibs de chivo (goat), and rabo encendido casarrece (braised oxtail pasta). The pollo guisado sambusas were extremely crispy and the chicken filling was generous. I love plantains so not much explanation needed there. The duck yucca fries were good but definitely outshined by all the other flavors, so would recommend another app or entree if you're with a bigger group! The oxtail was soo tender. Goat was also tender and flavorful, not gamey at all. Some of the dishes came with olives which I don't like but it wasn't difficult to just pick them out. Most of the dishes came with little peppers that were so fresh and delicious! The service was phenomenal, everyone was so kind and attentive and made sure we had a great time. The ambiance is super vibey, everyone dressed up (not a requirement but it matches the upscale, dimly light, tastefully decorated interior). Would love to come back if/when hype and resys calm down, altho the hype is extremely warranted!!

Yelp
We really loved this place. The ambiance is upscale; it's a really good place to take your date or a business partner. The staff were attentive and friendly without being intrusive. We loved the food. We had the sambusas, the tiradito, the steak tibs pintxos for appetizers. The meski yetsom platter was the main course, and a baked peaches with ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious! My daughters is a picky eater, but she ate so much, she had to loosen her belt!

Yelp
Meski, the new venture by Draymond Green and his team, has transformed the former Members Only bar into a vibrant Dominican and Ethiopian fine dining experience. The venue retains its charming features, such as the backlit bar, high ceiling fixtures, and a basement-level speakeasy, adding to its unique atmosphere. The dining area, primarily located on the main floor, offers a delightful blend of flavors, while the downstairs speakeasy provides a cozy setting for drinks and conversation. Reservations are highly recommended due to its popularity. Our server was exceptional, offering excellent recommendations and even providing complimentary empanadas for our large group. The drinks were a highlight, with the Ethiopian milk punch being a must-try. This smooth concoction of whisky, Ethiopian coffee, and milk wash, garnished with coco puffs, is barely detectable in whisky, making it a delightful surprise. The Ethiopian honey wine, with its slight orange, sweet, and tart flavor from fermented crude honey, is another standout. On the food front, the Kifto Tartare was a creative dish, served with injera chips that perfectly absorbed the egg and paired well with the tartar. The Tibs de Chico, featuring goat meat, was surprisingly enjoyable. The marination masked any gaminess, and the inca peppers and pickled red onion added a refreshing acidity. For larger groups, the Meski Tomahawk is a superior choice over the NY sirloin. Coated in cashews and topped with awaze butter, the steak was cooked to perfection, offering a buttery, smoky, and sweet heat flavor profile. Overall, Meski offers a unique and memorable dining experience, combining rich cultural flavors with a welcoming atmosphere. Dishes KITFO TARTARE RAW BEEF TENDERLOIN, NITIR KIBBEH OIL. Yelp
Let's start with I absolutely love Ethiopian food. And to see it done in a fusion way was inspiring. Thank you to the amazing staff, including the general manager Brandon for an amazing experience. The team was great. They recommended excellent options and made sure we had more than enough to keep the party going. I was happy to attend during the soft opening and had more of an intimate experience. I will definitely return for happy hour.

Yelp
I am fairly disappointed in the food here. The food pictures resemble what was served. We ordered the shrimp tips and they served us 3 very small pieces of shrimp with 3 empty shrimp heads, not shareable and not worth $24. The 12oz strip steak, very tasty, but buried under a large amount of greens; does not look like the photos here. I am one who enjoys authentic Ethiopian food, I may have had too high an expectation for the dishes. Injera was very dry and subpar, should be plentiful for the table and upon requesting more they mentioned a fee. Ambiance was very trendy but enjoyable. Parking was terrible, as we know this area of the city is not great. With all being said, I will not return nor recommend to others. I'd bet this restaurant will be closing in about a year.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 My friend was visiting, and he really wanted to try Draymond's new restaurant. I was lucky to be able to get reservations at 7am on a Thursday. I would recommend making a reservation 1-2 weeks out. The vibes of this place are on point. The bottom floor was a lounge/bar area. We arrived 20 minutes early, and they allowed us to order some quick apps and cocktails downstairs while we waited for our table. For some reason, we had to close out our tab downstairs before heading upstairs to dine at the actual restaurant; I wish they could have just allowed us to transfer our tab upstairs. Other than that, the vibes were on point. It's a good place for a date night! Pollo Guisado Sambusas: 5/5 - DELICIOUS. Kitfo Tartar: 5/5 - YUMMAYYYY Tiradio: 5/5 - Right up my alley! Soooo good. Duck Fat Yuca Fries: 5/5 - Perfectly fried with an amazing dipping sauce Meski Yetsom Platter: 4.5/5 - I likey likey but veggies were a little undercooked to my liking. Meski Tomahawk: 4/5 - I've never had a steak that was coated with cashews! It was good. I wish their was a sauce that went with it though. Tzar Nikolai Caviar Bump: 3.5/5 normal cavior but they gave us free shots with it! so kind of them! Tib De Chivo: 3.5/5 I personally don't really like goat but the inca peppers on this dish was soo good. I could eat a jar of these peppers! Marin Miyagi Oysters: 3.5/5 - Oysters were hella fresh but they added wayyy to much pickled cabbage on it and it over powered the oysters.

Yelp
The atmosphere is everything! The artwork is stunning, and I'd gladly hang several pieces on my walls. The staff, from the hostess to the waitstaff, are incredibly friendly--so warm and inviting. Although the menu isn't extensive, everything they serve is delightful. My husband, who doesn't eat red meat, loved the samosas and the pollo con arroz. I tried the oxtail pasta and it was fantastic! The yuca fries were also delicious! You really can't go wrong with any of the dishes--they're bursting with flavor! We also sampled some cocktails that were a nice change from our usual choices. I think my husband mentioned they use a Japanese whiskey? But the highlight for me was the complimentary honey wine served for my birthday--it had a smoky hint... absolutely superb! I ordered a French 75 with a splash of honey wine--yum! A true chef's kiss! Visit Meski; you won't regret it!

Yelp
Unique and elevated restaurant that we could use more of in the Bay! Overall ambiance is beautiful. Not much seating, so I recommend reservations. There is some bar seating, high tops, and a lovely lounge downstairs. I hope they host events down there in the future. I had no idea what to expect with a cuisine of Ethiopian and AfroLatin, but they nailed the fusion. I chatted with their mixologist who has also created some notable cocktail offerings in the bay, and he gave me great insight to the vision they were trying to create with the menu and I appreciate the attention to detail. All of the drinks and food we had were phenomenal. I'd order everything again. I only knock off a star because I came the day after their grand opening and service was rocky to say the least. Doors opened 15 minutes after they were supposed (our reservation was for 5 and they open at 5). They opened the doors and our table still wasn't ready. They sat us at the bar and said they would let us know when our table was ready but they forgot about us. We had a great time chatting with the mixologist so decided to stay at the bar after all. Our server also wasn't particularly welcoming, maybe stress. Hopefully they iron things out as they set a rhythm.

Yelp
Each dish offers a unique and well-defined flavor profile, ranging from subtle and delicate to bold, rich, and slightly spicy. The service was top-notch--our server Isabel was incredible, and the entire staff was consistently friendly and attentive. The decor beautifully evokes African energy, creating a warm and inviting atmospherewe. We will definitely will be back.

Yelp
Grown and sexy vibe. Great for couples, large parties and even singles. Drinks are amazing especially the Bidi Bidi bum bum and Papi G. The staff is friendly and very attentive. Food was amazing. My favs are the steak tibs, sambusas, salmon tiradito and tomahawk but other dishes were really good too. The interior transports you to a jungle-esque garden. Definitely will be back very soon.

Yelp
Came in here on a one off whim. Wanted to come for a while but have not been able to schedule a time to do it. But I was walking by and thought why not! Decided to go downstairs to the lounge after speaking with the lovely hostess. I wanted to go downstairs and get comfortable after that and the moment I got there Antonio M. was so inviting and attentive. He invited me right in, gave me a menu let me know his faves and gave me a minute with the menu. I ordered the Cotorra Sucia cocktail. It was lovely. More spirit forward than I expected but no complaints!!! Ordered the duck fat fries and feed tips. Delicious!! But the main standout was Antonio M. - he's so friendly and knowledgeable. He is a fabulous bartender.

Yelp
Tried out this place before attending a show at the Curran Theatre, last month. Ambiance, wait staff and presentation were really good. My husband ordered the Oxtail pasta dish and I ordered the Arroz Con Pollo. I was a little disappointed with the Arroz Con Pollo. I'm used to more flavor with that dish. We also order the plantains madurosand yucca fritos. Those were really good. Definitely a date night type of restaurant and vibe. I would try them again.

Yelp
Came here late night after dropping mom off at the airport and glad I did! The drinks and appetizers were amazing and the vibe and ambience was lively with loud Latin music and people talking. The staff was nice, welcoming, and attentive. I headed down to the bar downstairs after and it was a fun dark room lighting vibe with a DJ. Will be coming back for dinner soon!

Yelp
I went to Meski for Sunday brunch without a reservation and got the Shakshuka, some coffee, and a passion fruit mimosa. It's an Ethiopian Afro-Latin fusion so it was fun and refreshing to see Injera and Teff alongside Mofongo on a single menu. There was a live saxophone player and the space itself is small and cozy. I'm told dinner is the better meal so I'll have to try it!

Yelp
Had to come to Meski ! Since Alamar, I have been a chef Nelson groupie! His dishes are always amazing and these dishes did not disappoint!! They've only been open for 2 months so the 1-star reviews are not true for my experience... Sat at The "chefs table" on Sunday evening and we were greeted promptly at the door. Everything was clean and the decor so green! Gave me Draymond Green vibes!! The music playing in the background was regeton (like bad bunny and Karol G ) yeah!!! Not too loud either! We had the salmon tiradito and the Sambusas-empanadas (so yum!!) as appetizers- loved the flavors in the sauces!! Nothing was bland! Our Main dishes we shared- the arroz con pollo and NY bistec! The portions were hefty and everything cooked to perfection with all the flavors on point !!! No Salt Needed, no pepper, no hot sauce...nothing ! The seasoning was not overwhelming. The bistec was rare to medium and the quality of the meat was great - no chewy or extra fat. Chef Nelson came over to grace us with his presence to say hello and just so genuine!! He informed us that Sunday Brunch starts next week and features new dishes !!! The space upstairs is quaint but lively and there is also a lounge downstairs which is more informal. Street Parking is tight and we had to do a few circles since the garage is Closed on Sundays.

Yelp
Visited Meski's for the first time since it reopened as Meski's from Members Only. The interior and ambience were exactly the same as Members only, from the colors to the furniture to the the wallpaper. The drinks were good, nothing out of the ordinary. The food was okay too, I ordered the vegan platter which was pretty mediocre. It came with injera, lentils, beans and a vegetable, and collard greens. The chicken came with a bed of flavored rice. The drink were good. I tried the cucumber tuj and it was like a simple cucumber gimlet. Wanted to try the Ethiopian donuts but their aie fryer had broken down.

Yelp
Where do I begin? I visited Meski on a Thursday and it was not too packed. We were immediately set down at a table. The ambiance was a 10/10. The atmosphere gave sexy and modern. The drinks were 8/10. We ordered plantains, steak skewers for our appetizers. Both were excellent. Portion small but the taste was impeccable! For main Entrees we had the chicken as well as the oxtail pasta and both were very bold in flavor. Our waiter Tyler was the best. Very attentive. Checked in on us and chatted with him for a quick second and we almost left our leftovers but he came out and met us with it, which I truly appreciated because the food was absolutely amazing. I love the Chef's restaurant Alamar and Sobre Mesa . They're both located downtown Oakland. Definitely check this place out and ask for Tyler! He's amazing!

Yelp
The service was great, the restaurant is small but has a nice vibe. The drinks didn't stand out to me and were not that good. The Ethiopian milk punch was good but wouldn't recommend the G&T. The lamb was flavorful and the injera platter was a good fusion of authentic and modern. Great place to try, it was also nice to be seated immediately when we arrived for our reservation.

Yelp
This place is such a fab vibe! Enjoyed their caviar service which was so delicious and also ordered their vegan appetizer another yummy plate! Jordan was our server he truly made the experience here much more enjoyable! My favorite cocktail drink was bidi bidi bam bam if you like sweet with a little spice! Will be returning to try their dinner plates! The lounge downstairs here is like a fun speakeasy feel so must check this place out if youre on a date night or even by yourself!

Yelp
A great addition to San Francisco! Loved the decor and vibe of Meski. All staff were so friendly and attentive! We had reservations for dinner, which we were seated within 10 minutes of arrival. Food was great, and portions were perfect, I will need to return to try more of their dishes. After dinner we wanted to experience the lower level lounge which had a DJ , and a separate bar. Such a nice place to just stop by and have a drink. They have some seating, standing room at the bar, and 2 TV's for when a game is on. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Nice little restaurant in the tenderloin, it's not very big inside but it's very nicely decorated, there's a lounge downstairs with a bar while you wait to be seated. The menu options are very limited but offers great choices, we went with the arroz con pollo, for me I was somewhere in the middle with this dish it was ok, the rice wasn't very flavorful and the chicken had a decent flavor which was good not great, my wife loved it. We also with the New York steak cooked a perfect medium that was fabulous and topped with red sofrito that was delicious and the chickpea puree was different and delicious. The collard greens were also really good, cooked and seasoned well.the special was sancocho which is like a seafood soup that was super flavor and delicious. The East African donuts for dessert were the star of the show for me, not so much the donuts themselves but the guava chamoy served with it was out of this world, I love guava and that was god sent lol great place

Yelp
I love this place! World class service. Food is absolutely delicious. Atmosphere is a vibe. This establishment is clean, neat & tidy. The manager and his staff went above and beyond to fulfill our needs. Although I live an hour away we will be regulars here!! Thank you Meski!

Yelp
Celebrating my birthday here for brunch! It was amazing! We had a great saxophone player that played Afro beats amongst other great music! The food was amazing and we did bottomless mimosas. We got the caviar and turkey bacon which was amazing so definitely recommend that! Our server Jordan was helpful and made sure my drink was never empty! Definitely coming back for dinner.

Yelp
The food was very goo and the decor was beautiful. The service was great as well. However, the place is so small. I didnt go down stairs which I learned was an open seating bar area that serves small bites and sometimes the full menu. It was hard getting a reservation. I tried to book for my bday early but had to wait 90days out and when I finally booked I still could only secure a high table. Thank goodness they gave me a table because i have a disability that makes the high table seating extremely uncomfortable. The food was soooo good! I would totally go again, but not sure I'd do so with their limited seating because planning so far in advance is for special occasions and there are so many other options that are more convenient to reserve. 4 stars only because of the reservation limitations. Food and services deserve 5 stars.

Yelp
Impeccable service. From the bus staff to the bartenders/servers! I ordered sides only, beans, rice, greens and the best latte' ive ever had! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Celebrated our girls birthday last Sunday for brunch and Meski did not disappoint! It's not a celebration without some bubbly so of course we had to do bottomless mimosas! The food was delicious. Our server was so attentive and made sure we were well taken care of. The ambience in the restaurant was perfect since they had a saxophone player performing a range of music to keep the good vibes going. Definitely will be coming back for brunch and would love to experience dinner here as well!

Yelp
Horrible....food wasn't to my liking...over priced and parking is horrible in the area and it's in the upper tenderloin....
