My boys and I swung by Mestizo off South Acadian in Baton Rouge's Mid-City area, craving a different spin on Mexican food. It was a rediscovery for me--I'd eaten there and ordered online a while back, and I pass by often for work, always noticing a healthy volume of cars in the lot. Mestizo nails the vibe of Mexican cuisine with a trendy Cajun twist, from the atmosphere to the fresh, local ingredients. Since my last visit, they've expanded with a larger dining area, and the well-stocked bar, now moved to the deep center, makes a bold first impression as you walk in. On this Sunday outing, 07/20/2025, the place had a nice little crowd--military folks, preppy types, yuppies, and some clearly well-heeled patrons, all adding to the mix.
The host greeted us warmly and seated us promptly, with our waitress not far behind, keeping things moving smoothly. I urged the boys to try the salsa, a standout with fresh herbs and spices, far from the usual salty versions you find elsewhere. Our party of three enjoyed a mix of drinks and dove into the daily special: chicken chimichangas paired with a beef enchiladas combo, plus a chicken and brisket quesadilla. Every dish delivered that Cajun-Mex flavor --fresh, bold, and satisfying. The steady flow of patrons spoke to the quality, a nod to the kitchen's consistency. While the price point leans a bit higher, the unique Louisiana-Mexican experience in this Mid-City gem is absolutely worth it.
