Metro Cinema - Review - Chelsea - New York - The Infatuation

"In Chelsea, Metro Cinema is taking “dinner and a show” to the extreme—you can rent out a screening room, and get a themed dinner cooked for you at this spot from the folks behind theAlamo Drafthouse. They also have events, like aChristmas Storydinner (available on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day), where you can watch the movie and eat a full Peking-style roast duck." - Will Hartman

Metro Private Cinema From Alamo Drafthouse Founders Opens in Chelsea | Eater NY

"Opening Wednesday, October 29 in Chelsea, this Tim League–led project debuts 20 private screening rooms for groups of four to twenty, each outfitted with recliners, surround sound, and table service from chef Joshua Guarneri (Breslin, Hearth and Hound, Bar Avalon in LA). Guests can book a room—for example, $300 for four to six people at 7:45 p.m.—then choose a themed multi-course dinner tied to films like Wicked: For Good or The Big Lebowski, or opt for a seasonal menu featuring kampachi crudo, mushroom risotto, peri peri prawns, and a dessert trio; beverage pairings run $25 to $50 per person or can be ordered a la carte. That puts the experience at roughly $1,200 for dinner and a movie for a party of six (about $200 per person). The complex also includes a public cocktail lounge, the Bar with No Name, and upcoming special dinners include $125-per-person Planes, Trains, and Automobiles on Thanksgiving and a duck dinner for A Christmas Story on December 24 and 25." - Melissa McCart

Metro Private Cinema Opens in New York Backed by Alamo Drafthouse | Eater NY

"Opening in September at 131 Eighth Avenue (West 16th Street) in Chelsea, this “twenty-plex” is built entirely for private groups: rather than purchasing an individual seat ticket, a host books a whole private screening room. Rooms generally seat between four and 12, the base is $50 per person with unlimited popcorn, multi-course meals run about $100 per person, and after the movie ends the group gets about 30 minutes extra time to keep hanging out. The concept pairs films with curated, themed multi-course meals: for example, pairing the Les Blank documentary Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers with “their garlicky dinner experience” that includes “a chilled almond soup, charcuterie, roasted rabbit, and succotash,” and the website writes, “Every dish in this menu, from the cocktails to the dessert and everything in between, is kissed or clobbered by God’s gift to cuisine: garlic.” Other offerings include a Wicked-themed menu, a Goodfellas dinner, and an A Christmas Story Chinese roast duck experience, and menus can be mixed and matched. The food program was developed by Joshua Guarneri, who previously was the executive chef at the short-lived Bar Avalon in Los Angeles and worked at the Breslin in New York. Founder Tim League said, “We’re going to have a lot of fun,” and mentioned pickling projects were happening downstairs at the venue in anticipation of opening. Financially, Alamo Drafthouse invested in the venture and has equity shares, though the project is being positioned as an offshoot (League stepped down as Alamo CEO in 2020 but remains involved). The launch comes amid broader context around the parent brand: a 2022 Texas Observer piece chronicled pandemic-era challenges including employee layoffs and bankruptcy and described the portrait of working there as “far from fantastic”; Splinter reported in 2018 that League and his wife had been accused of “minimizing” workplace issues during the #MeToo era, to which League responded, “I’ve let so many of you down. Over the past few days, I’ve realized that decisions I have made over these past months have been problematic. I am concerned about what these choices may say about me and the values of this company to employees, customers and the community at large. I’m humbled and deeply sorry.” In 2024 Alamo Drafthouse was acquired by Sony, and earlier this year Variety reported that unionizing workers at Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn locations ended a 58-day strike after reaching an agreement that brought back about 70 employees. League framed the concept as especially suited to New York’s built environment and changing cinema habits: “New York is an old city. In order to build a traditional movie theater, you need high ceilings and forty-foot spans; most New York buildings aren’t set up for that,” and he added, “There’s a certain number of people who would prefer to be in a private place than a huge room with strangers […] it’s an alternative that works alongside traditional cinemagoing,” expressing hope it will grow a new market of people who aren’t going to the cinema as much." - Emma Orlow

Just WOW!! Had the best time at Metro Cinema with a group of friends over the weekend. The space is gorgeous, the food is delicious, the staff is incredible (shoutout to Theo!), and the whole experience is so unique. It’s such an elevated and intimate take on the movie-going experience. All of the little touches (a drink upon arrival, picking your own records to play, personal popcorn bowls, blankets!!) made it so special and memorable. We all left saying it was one of the best nights we’ve had in NYC. Highly highly recommend for a special occasion or just a fun night out!

This is the coolest new experience in NYC! It’s your own private screening room for dinner & a movie. They have so many movies to choose from including those that are currently in theatres. You start the evening in their lounge where you get to choose records to play during dinner. Then you head down to your private theatre that already has the first course set for dinner. Each dinner is specially curated for you based on your preferences and the film. There’s also wine and speciality cocktails. We ended with dessert and coffee then jumped into our plush, reclinable seats. They even gave us cozy blankets. After the film started they surprised us with some popcorn. And when we left we got a few mementos. Definitely a high class experience. A++++ highly recommend!

What a fun and classy and elegant place. The bar has the best drinks and nice staff. I ate a delicious meal that was curated to the movie we saw. 3 courses and many dishes and drinks. The strawberry Negroni was elegant, and told old stories in my mouth. The best I ever had. I think they make a lot of the fruit purées in house. My meal was top tier. The squash risotto blew my mind. Dessert was fun and the private screening room was amazing.

Had the best Bday with the fellas at Metro Private Cinema! Great Bar for cocktails, beautiful lounge area, we had a 5 star three course meal with fish, chicken, veggies, beef prosciutto, a special bday cake, Lambrusco, etc! The service was amazing, Stevie Wonder/Ahmad Jamal Jazz vinyl playing while we dined, and then saw one of the hottest movies out with Sean Penn and Leo DiCaprio - One Battle After Another! 5 stars, can’t miss! Major Bday memories! Love, Love, Loved it!🫶🏾🤗☀️🥳🔥🥹😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

My partner rented me a private theater at Metro to watch Wicked and overall it was a really special, memorable experience. The venue is beautiful and glamorous, the location is great, and the food was genuinely pretty good. My guests loved having a whole theater to ourselves - it felt like such a fun “experience” and I’d absolutely consider doing it again. A few details kept it from being a fully seamless premium experience / “definite yes”, especially given the price point. We were told the menu would be tailored around our group’s dietary restrictions, but it was clearly the same standard menu with no real customization so I couldn’t have a lot of it. At the start of the movie, the curtain wasn’t removed from the screen for the first 10-15 minutes, which is small but felt like an attention to detail miss. We also purchased the “drinks all night” package, but there wasn’t a clear way to order during the film without getting up or interrupting the movie to flag someone down, so the value there didn’t match expectations. Some logistics also need improvement: 1) there were only two all-gender bathrooms for the whole complex (with many theaters), and one was in rough shape, which meant waiting and missing a few mins of the movie which is suboptimal in a theater. 2) we were handed gratuity slips in a way that implied we should tip on top, despite my partner mentioning gratuity already being included, so that process felt sloppy on a large subtotal. 3) I was surprised by the soundproofing - we could hear people laughing in a neighboring theater. Net: a gorgeous venue with a very cool concept - am sure the team will iron out some of these details given they’re new!

What a unique, beautiful and fun experience! Metro Cinema has taken going to the movies to the next level. From the amazing staff & food, down to the beautiful details of the space, Metro Cinema is a 10/10. Our group had such a wonderful experience, can’t wait to go back! Who doesn’t love dinner & a show?!

A week ago, we were fortunate enough to host a birthday party as part of MetroCinema’s pre-opening/trial run and WHAT AN EVENT..! Our guests are still talking about it: “you win for best birthday celebration ever.” As the person throwing the party, I felt so supported by the staff and, as a result, stress free once we were all there. Do this..! It’s special. And owned by someone who cares a lot about movies and preserving the joys of the big screen, good food, and good friends. Thank you so much, MetroCinema 🎬
