The Best Bakeries In Philadelphia

"This Rittenhouse icon started the city’s French bakery trend way back in ‘93. But it gets bragging rights for more than just its age—Metropolitan makes the city’s best canelé. Even if you’re just popping in for a baguette, get one of these caramelized little guys with a custardy center, and grab an airy almond croissant, too. The 19th Street location has an adjacent cafe that sells blistered thin-crust pizzas and sandwiches made with their incredible bread. There's also a stand at Reading Terminal Market where you can grab a sour cherry chocolate chip cookie after a roast pork sandwich." - candis mclean, alison kessler

Where to Buy the Best Bread in Philly | Eater Philly

"Opened in 1993, Metropolitan Bakery perhaps holds the title of grand dame of Philadelphia artisanal bread shops. It still lovingly churns out a multiplicity of loaves — from raisin nut to organic spelt — and all of them are great. You’ll find these loaves at their Rittenhouse Square and University City locations but also all over the city at a range of cafes." - Dayna Evans

Metro has been my favorite lunch spot near Penn’s Campus for the past three years, but I think this most recent time will be my last. Waited about 45 minutes for my sandwich- had to go up and ask them to make it, as they accidentally gave my sandwich away to someone else and didn’t even have the order. Didn’t apologize or do anything to make it right- the employee serving me threw my sandwich in front of me and walked away. The wait would have been fine if the staff truly apologized, or actively offered to make it right. Incredibly disappointing behavior- new management needs to step up and change this asap.

Google
Charging a premium for your product and then forcing your customers to use the crappiest coffee dispenser imaginable is an interesting choice. I had to pump that thing like I was giving it CPR - very awkward especially when dispensing more than one cup. Bagel had a good flavor and was pleasantly crispy with an average coverage of cream cheese. 2 bagels with cream cheese and 2 small coffees was over $15. Then I was asked to give a tip starting at 15% on a tiny little screen. Will probably never go here again, the place feels like they are taxing people for the cozy vibe they offer. Plenty of other nearby options that aren't as over priced. I saw they are asking over $15 for their breakfast sandwiches ? Diabolical

Google
Friends and I visited twice in consecutive late weekend mornings. Very good croissants and coffee selections. Looks like the early bird patrons have the advantage here. Would go back (earlier) when in Philly again.

Google
Coffee was really good (4/5). We got a hot soy lavender latte and iced mocha coffee. The food was underwhelming but filling. I got the breakfast burrito which I think was the only vegetarian dish for breakfast besides the build your own (4/5). My boyfriend got the build your own with plain bagel, egg, bacon & sausage. The sausage wasn’t to his liking and the bagel was hard (2/5). The vibe was really nice and I will definitely come back to read or do quiet work and get a coffee.

Google
My wife and I stopped by the Metropolitan Bakery and Cafe in Philadelphia yesterday for an afternoon snack. We loved the vibe of this place and their bakery offerings. My wife got a piece of carrot cake - which she said “was the best carrot cake I have EVER had!”

On Monday, February 3 at 2:20 you had two staff members short hair blonde one and all black kind of purpleish hair that sign out at 2:15 that the kitchen is closed and they only toasting bagels and then when asked for a toasted bagel, they said they have none then they switch their mind and they said they have a bagel, but they won’t toast itthese employees should they were more interested in being on their phones and smoking outside than providing to the customers I will never come back to this place with this kind of customer service. Please check your camera and have better management on your employees.

Google
Very good sandwich (The Slammer I think?) though next time I’ll ask for less press since crispy French bread is too tough. Super fresh ingredients and inviting atmosphere. Will be back

Google
I absolutely love this bakery/cafe! They have freshly baked items everyday, amazing sandwiches made to your liking and tons of homemade goods like pastries, cream cheese, and sweets. Their coffee is really good too. I usually have a latte here and it's pretty bold and flavorful. I believe it is run by a couple who are super friendly and warm. This is located across from the Panera Bread and movie theater. It's a small cafe but still has room for seating indoor and outdoor. I highly recommend this place, it'll become a favorite!

Yelp
Under New Ownership!!!! Same yummy pastries as before, but with terrific menu upgrades. Fresh ingredients, more selections, superb coffee, and great staff to make your breakfast, lunch, or early dinner in University City a yummy and healthy one. We had pour-over coffee and a delicious tomato/pesto focaccia. I highly recommend!!!!!

Yelp
I have been going here for a while, and really struggled to see if I should review this place or not. As a cafe it actually is a fairly good place, nice space if you want to eat in, decent food options, nice pastries (their ginger scones are very good), decent coffee, and they also have discounted day old bread section, and free bread section for 2 day old bread. So, if I am strictly reviewing the cafe and their offerings it is a 4 star place, but the service is terrible. If I have to review the service it is probably between 1-2 stars. There are few employees there, and most of them just look like they don't want to be there (maybe that is the case). They don't really want to engage with you, nothing. Particularly this one young employee who mans the cash register, omg, when she is there I know I am going to be pissed. If you are working in a service business I don't care, please at least be pleasant with the customers. If you don't want that then please find a non customer engaging work. I do have to say that there is one employee who has been at Metropolitan for a while who is really good (friendly, engaging, and very helpful); her name is Cassidy, thank you Cassidy for always having a smile and being helpful!

Yelp
The sandwich was tasty, but pretty pricy for what it was. The service was ok but they seemed kind of annoyed when we walked in and placed our orders. The cafe itself is really cute.

Yelp
I stopped in recently and purchased several pastries and a slice of cake. I also inquired about purchasing a small amount of bulk cream cheese for making a cheesecake. The cashier was less than welcoming. While they were masked and I couldn't see their face they couldn't have been ruder or more curt. They could have simply rolled their eyes even more to send the message. All of the pastries seemed stale and dry. Sad what has happened here. I've been here before when the owner was present and it was a welcoming and inviting place to be. This time I would say yikes. Poor service, poor quality and not clean. Avoid if this is the new standard.

Lily M.

Yelp
Love this place. The service is incredible. The employees are very kind. Metropolitan Bakery also has some very unique coffees, making this place perfect for the coffee connoisseur. Highly recommend!

Emily M.

Yelp
Used to love this place and it would be an essential stop whenever we came up. It's been 2 years since we've come and must be under new management. The breakfast sandwiches were flavorless and really just ick. The scones and croissant had no flavor. The cappuccino was decent but it's hard to mess that up unless you have bad beans. Won't be returning and am quite sad about it.

Yelp
I miss their old specialty drinks so much!! Esp their black forest mocha, which i could probably order myself w the same ingredients but it's just not the sameeee. But their food is always solid. They have really nice bagel sandwiches, we got the rotunda, the wharton ? And i got a egg sandwich on a seeded bagel w pesto and pepper jack which was great. I think under the new ownership a lot of the old vegan options arent there anymore, but i might have just missed them on the menu.

Douglas L.

Yelp
Food excellent, staff delightful. Music loud enough to hear but not too loud to think. Great little sidewalk cafe type; I knew I was in the right place when I was eating my sandwich and a lady walked in and said "I'll have my usual."

Yelp
Very solid breakfast joint. The food is really good, but there's something about the atmosphere that rubs me the wrong way. In a place with the same type of service as McDonald's (asking what your order is then telling you to wait), handing me a check with a tip section is insane. It puts unbelievable pressure on people to tip, which doesn't affect me because I'm never going to tip for normal food interactions. But I'm looking out for the little guy, the one who will tip even though it's a scam to do so. I'd very much prefer the electronic tablet with the tip menu. It's much easier to click tip $0 then write down $0. No one saying it, but I will. Get in, get your food, and get out. Recommend.

Yelp
Didn't even know this place was on campus but may make it my new spot! Really feels like you've been transported to a chic patisserie in Paris, complete with adorable bistro tables and French music softly playing overhead. (I've never been to France, but back me on this one). The counter staff couldn't be more congenial and helpful. When I struggled to land on an iced tea flavor to order, he procured two Dixie cups in a blind taste test for me, and even stamped my brand spankin' new loyalty card twice, as a little treat. (One of those 'buy ten drinks get your next one free' jawns). Food menu is actually pretty large and varied. I was tempted to get a bagel with one of their many flavored cream cheeses, but since it was 1:30 in the afternoon, I instead opted for a prosciutto, artichoke, & provolone panini. They brought that and a raspberry green iced tea outside to me where I soaked in the sunshine and the sights of a bustling Walnut Street. The panini was perfectly executed: melty, crispy, crunchy, savory. I went back inside and requested a doggie bag to save half for later, but not without impulse buying a large chocolate chip walnut cookie and a fresh loaf of French table bread for my pasta dinner that night. Overall, I can't wait to return!

Yelp
This is one of my most frequented cafes/bakeries on campus. It's always bustling in the morning but pretty chill in the afternoon. The ambiance is very simplistic but warm and always inviting. You'll see people working and chatting away. It somehow accommodates it all. My favorite drink is the cubano - it's a latte with cinnamon and it's my go to. They have a list of special drinks on the left of the cashier. When you're up in the counter, make sure to look at the specials on the right side! They change daily! The food from the kitchen is pretty good. I have tried the paninis and grilled cheese sandwiches - they're all tasty, freshly made, and always great. I personally love pesto so I really like the pesto pesto grilled cheese.

Yelp
What a charming cafe! My partner and I enjoyed delicious fresh pastry, coffee and soup there this morning. We felt welcomed and appreciated. The seating was ample and comfortable, with nice (but not intrusive) background music and intriguing artwork on the walls. The staff was courteous and efficient and friendly. Very relaxing and delightful experience. We'll be back soon!

Yelp
I love this Metropolitan. It's such a great place in the neighborhood to meet up with a friend, have really good coffee and delicious breakfast sandwiches. The staff is always so kind and helpful (exceptional service and kindness this past Tuesday for a late breakfast), they offer a bread card (free loaf with enough purchases) their baguettes are wonderful and the space is comfy and clean. It can get pretty crowded during the school year with Penn students stopping by to study...summers offer a bit more spaciousness in seating. But don't let any of that stop you from coming here and enjoying this neighborhood coffee shop.

Yelp
We are visiting Philadelphia and wanted a good cup of coffee. So happy we passed on chain selections and opted for MB. Super friendly server, unique delicicious latte and scrumptious bagel. Go.

Yelp
I made an impromptu stop here when searching for a place with WiFi where I could get some work done. At 4pm on a Friday, the café was almost completely empty which was perfect. I had just finished a bunch of annual checkups/appointments, and honestly, I was in no mood to chat and socialize. A nearly empty and quiet café was quite heavenly. With the weekend on the horizon, I really just wanted to get my work done and get some food in my belly while at it! Since I had missed lunch, I decided to spring for a sandwich. I got the basic egg sandwich which consisted of scrambled eggs in a bread of your choice (the options are a bagel, wrap or toast). You can also add veggies or sauces to your sandwich for an additional cost. I got the whole wheat wrap and added spinach and grilled onions. The wrap was ready for me in just a few minutes and although there was nothing special about it, it was piping hot and fresh. I also appreciated the nice presentation. The gentleman who took my order and brought my wrap out to the table was so friendly and polite. I stayed at the café until closing time but never felt pressured to leave. I have a lot of respect for staff members at restaurants/cafés that let you leave on your own and don't push you out the door right when they are closing. It's not too often that I'm in this area but I'll keep this place in mind next time I am and want to grab some coffee or a bite and need to do some work. Since it's located in University City, this is a great local café for U. Penn and/or Drexel students and staff to check out!

Yelp
Great menu, fresh ingredients, quick, well priced, great service, and delicious. Definitely recommend

Yelp
I come here whenever I'm in this side of town. Decent selection of baked goods on a daily basis, quality coffee, and friendly staff. Day olds at half price are a personal favorite when I want to buy a bunch of items for groups at the Rotunda. Croissants are to die for. Limited seating but WiFi and power outlets make it a nice break spot.

R C.

Yelp
My first experience wasn't good. But I Revisited this place and had the vegan "chicken" noodle soup and home made ice cream. It was so good! I'm glad that I gave it another try.

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
Major changes to metro U City. If you used to come here and love it, be aware it is nothing like it used to be. Entire experience was a disaster. Flies everywhere. No more long list of specialty lattes/drinks. Out of sausage at 9:30AM...? No longer using the rewards card where your 10th coffee / sandwich are free. When I asked about this and the drink list they looked at me like I was crazy and said "we've never had a snickerdoodle latte" etc. No longer bring drinks to you. No longer bring the food to you. No longer used plates. Trash bass music playing (this is coming from a Bassnectar fan). 25 minute wait for latte- no "sorry for the wait." So sad.
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
I've been to the Metropolitan Cafe before but this was my worst experience here. The wait was ridiculously long. I waited 15 minutes to order at the cashier. After 40 minutes I asked the manager where my food was only for him to tell me that there wasn't an order in the system for me. I ended up getting a refund and walking out of there. The only reason I gave them 2 stars is that the manager expressed his regret and ended up giving me a voucher for the next time I go to the cafe. But I wasted an hour at that cafe and I didn't even get any food. Multiple customers before and after me complained as well. They're system is really inefficient. They call the orders by name and they kept on messing up while handing out people's orders. This was a disappointing experience.

Yelp
Very rude customer service! The owners are extremely unpleasant and rude Individuals. The product that I bought, the cracker mix was stale!
google avatar

Yelp
The owner lady is nice and very knowledgeable, I always ask her if I am not sure what to get and never regretted of her recommendations.

Yelp
I think I've found my new hangout (near work). This place--- oh where do I start? They are so accommodating of different dietary needs, with many vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free offerings (including a refrigerated case of vegan and gluten free things to take home). I love small, local bakery cafés. After all, what's not to like? Freshly baked breads, bagels, and pastries, a variety of coffee and tea beverages (hot and iced), and a relaxed atmosphere. These kinds of places combine many of my favorite things. I ordered a dark chocolate brownie and a hot chai latte to-go. The brownie was good- moist and flavorful. This latte--- I could write poems about. Full of rich cinnamon and nutmeg flavor, it was perfect- not too sweet (which is usually the case at the chains). My coworker got lentil soup, which was full of veggies and and rich and hearty (also happens to be vegan and come with a roll). Another friend got a pastry and biscotti, which were both very good. The staff was friendly and helpful. There were quite a few people there since it was lunch time, but the wait wasn't too bad- only a few minutes. All food and drinks are made-to-order and either wrapped to go or delivered to your table. Given today's experience, I will definitely be back and update my review with additional items I have tried.

Yelp
I'm not sure why I gave 4 stars last time. Anyway, it's been a year since my last visit and delicious baked goods were calling my name (especially in this temperamental weather), so I decided to make a trip to Metropolitan Bakery as my reward for exercising in the morning. I stopped by after my run and grabbed a croissant and a power muffin. I'm munching on the muffin as I am typing this, and it's a very well chosen and satisfying reward for sticking with my resolution! I would get the power muffin over millet muffin since it has millet plus a whole bunch of other goodness plus a touch of orange zest. Ask the staff what's in it, they'll let you know (it's a long list). One of the staff called it "the kitchen sink of muffins." Well, it's a delicious kitchen sink.

Yelp
I live pretty close by to Metro Bakery and it's a really nice spot to grab a quick breakfast. I've been here twice before and enjoyed it both times even though I will say that everything is on the expensive side. My favorite thing to order here is their steel-cut oatmeal which comes with two toppings (options include walnuts, almonds, raisins, brown sugar, cranberries, etc.) and milk (both dairy and nondairy options available). The oatmeal is very filling and has a great texture. It's smooth and slightly chewy and goes really well with a banana, which is also available for purchase at Metro (for 50 cents each). I've also had their famous Metro granola. I tried the Pomegranate Cinnamon flavor which also comes with a milk. It's pretty good (nothing incredible) and is a pretty large portion. It's very crunchy and fairly sweet. Overall, a nice spot in University City that is pretty popular with students.

Yelp
FIY: Kind of busy on weekends and it has a $10 credit card minimum. Also, not that much seating so either take it to go, go early, or stake out a spot. A friend of mine and I wanted to catch up so we decided on grabbing some breakfast at Metropolitan Bakery because we live close by and it was a pretty cold day too. She had suggested it after we decided on breakfast, and I was all for it because truth be told, even though I live pretty close, I've never gone. WHAT I GOT: Plain bagel (toasted) with veggie cream cheese PROS: The cafe's interior, despite being a bit small and a tad too warm, was nice and cozy. The walls displayed and sold art and jewelry from different local artists and even menu looked like it was handwritten. It was cute and inviting. My friend got a multigrain bagel with cinnamon raisin cream cheese and a vegan donut on the side (chocolate hazelnut I think). The bagel I got was toasted to how I liked it and had the right amount of chewiness, though at the end it became a little harder to eat. The cream cheese was fantastic. It had actual veggie chunks in it (red onion, celery, carrots) and tasted mostly like the red onion but I didn't mind it. The chunks added a nice texture and upped the game in my opinion. It wasn't the most filling thing but it did the trick for a quick breakfast. Probably something I would get to go in the future, if I decide to come back. CONS: There is like zero walking space in this place. The tables and chairs are packed together so tightly that getting by on your way to pick the food up and to leave is kind of difficult. The wait time to get our food was also nearing the side of ridiculous. Like seriously...for 2 bagels with cream cheese, not sure why it took them a little over 20 minutes to get to us. I can understand that for breakfast sandwiches, but seriously? Bagels? The prices for some of their food items were also a bit much. Definitely overpriced in my opinion, and these weren't even any of their vegan choices.

Yelp
I am a big fan of this place! I frequently stop here for an organic coffee & a dark chocolate - dried cherry cookie! YUM. The only reason why I am not giving 5 starts is because I think their portions are not right, for the price you pay, for their lunches. I've ordered sandwiches here many times, and you end up paying about $8 for a small plate. However, the pastries and breads are amazing - and I love that so many things are local/organic. It's a small-ish local store & they do great things.

Kathy E.

Yelp
I don't understand some of the previous reviews. The owners, who are often onsite, working, are the nicest people in the world. Everyone who works there is nice and does a wonderful job. They sell the best bread in the city. I wouldn't have made it through the pandemic without them since I was one of the few people who didn't start baking my own sourdough bread. If you call ahead with your order, there won't be a wait.
google avatar

Wendy S.

Yelp
I was just thinking today that I have not been back in a while, and I need to pay a visit soon, because this is truly one of the best bakery / breakfast spot. The oatmeal portion is huge! I could never finish it. The coffee is also one of the best on Penn's campus. They really pull from some of the best material for high quality food. The service is very homey and kind. However, there are lots of people coming here to catch up with old friends. It's such a positive vibe and always puts me in a good mood to start off my day this way. If you have wanted to catch up with someone for a while, ask them to Metropolitan bakery!

Elena S.

Yelp
We stayed at the hotel next to this cafe and enjoyed their coffee and bakery. The staff is very friendly and ready to assist you with all your needs. We noticed that they also operate the shop in the very smart way- all one day old bakeries are 50% off Oh, they have big variety of salads, panini, sandwiches, etc I would recommend this place to everyone!

Fred M.

Yelp
If I could give a negative star I would. This place is disgrace/joke. It portrays itself as a hipster cafe (which I am not but have nothing against) but has none of the high quality items you would expect from such an establishment. MICROWAVED COFFEE And possibly microwaved eggs. Very foul Take my advice after giving these people one too many chances, go anywhere else , Macdonalds may even be better.

Emily G.

Yelp
An absolute gem. Best croissants, great cannelles, satisfying scones, fantastic kouign amanns. I've also enjoyed the millet muffin, which is similar to a corn muffin as other reviewers have pointed out. The French berry rolls are also good when fresh. I don't think there's a single item on the menu I wouldn't try.
google avatar

Stef S.

Yelp
I'm not sure what the hype is all about. I would've given them 3 stars, except they didn't give correct change. Sure it was only one cent and maybe you felt too lazy to give me my extra coin, but wtf, that's MY penny. You didn't earn that penny. I didn't give you permission to not give me my change. The servers definitely don't care about you. The just do their job. Not particularly friendly or excited. The iced chai was watery tasting. At $3.40 you better taste better or give me more than Starbucks. Metro did neither. So i'll stick with beloved Starbucks. The baked goods look delicious, but at $2+ each, they're pretty pricey for mediocre to small sizes. My biscotti was too hard and stale. I prefer crunch on the outside, slight chew on the inside. For $1.75 I felt ripped off. Also, while they're going for the cute "open bakery" look, cover your stuff please. There were flies ALL OVER. The breakfast burrito, at $7, was pretty tasty. But nothing to rave about. And it took about 15 min to make. Really? Seriously? I love studying in cafes but this cafe was too small. Obnoxious undergrads were annoyingly discussing the philosophy of linguistics and God for an hour, talking about how clever they were to reuse books from one class for another.
google avatar

Yelp
Metropolitan Bakery is one of my favorite coffee shops in University City area. I go here so often to read/journal by myself or meet up with friends. The place is pretty small, but the atmosphere is chill and relaxing. They have a variety of baked good selections and have a quite extensive food menu for breakfast and lunch. I've had their vegetarian wraps, grilled cheese, almond croissant and multigrain bread with berry preserves. Their food isn't the best but it's simple and clean. I personally really love fruit preserves and the one they serve is so good. I think most of their rolls of bread are all fresh and tasty. I usually don't like anything sour, but I actually enjoyed their sourdough bread because it was very soft and the sourness was not unpleasantly sour. I do think though that their menu items are on the pricier side for the portion they offer. They also have a credit card minimum of $10 I think so you need to make sure you bring cash! Lastly, I'm not sure how important this may be to others, but I love love love almond croissants and I'm not too impressed with the ones from MB. Their almond croissant is huge but the bread to almond butter proportion is off - there's not enough almond butter inside so it just tastes like a regular crunchy croissant.

Yelp
Such a class act local business. You can never go wrong with local baked goods, fresh coffee, tasty yogurt, and delicious goat cheese and crackers. So the fact that Metropolitan hooks up all of the above under one roof, and does it with a smile, makes it pure tops. I stopped in to give their cup of joe a try, and instantly made note of their mini marketplace hooking up the likes of Z Crackers, Cypress Grove goat cheese, and locally fresh yogurt. I can't think of too many other coffeehouse/bakeries that does such. their baked goods hooked up creme fraiche bread, chocolate pound cake, fresh biscotti, decadent brownies and so much more. after looking for so long I couldn't resist and had to try a brownie, which ended up being big time chocolate. they had a grand selection of self serve coffee too that included fair trade Mexican, and some organic blends. I know I'm sold!

Yelp
I live right near this bakery, but have only passed by every day and only came here for the second time ever the other day before my first class. Searching for a convenient place to grab a cup of tea and lunch and sit down with my readings for the day, I decided to finally stop by. I do enjoy the mission of the store, with the local art and jewelry being displayed for sale on the walls, and it seems like all of its choices are more natural (with a lot of vegan and creative options). However, the take out is extremely slow (the first time I came here I ordered a lox sandwich to go, for which I waited half an hour....and it was super salty with too much cream cheese to boot), and so is the service if you sit down (although I suppose it doesn't matter too much if you're with friends or have a book). The chairs and tables are not very comfortable for a coffeeshop/bakery, and the cashiers seemed to look down on me since I wasn't sure what to order. The food was not only expensive, but ....kinda terrible-tasting...maybe I've just ordered wrong things?? I got a red pepper panini (what a safe option!)...and it came with weird artichoke hearts and some type of cream cheese that did not complement the sogginess of the other flavors at all!! The bread was pretty good, but ruined by the wetness of the vegetables. I also ordered an iced tea, which probably had 2 sips of drink out of the entire cup of ice. The sauces they sell in the fridges on the side are pretty good though (although $10 for a tiny pesto sauce is pretty expensive)...but otherwise I'm not sure spending $10+ on a tiny soggy sandwich is worth it.

Yelp
A little over priced considering what they sell and how cheap other things are on campus (Cosi), but I guess it's understandable since it's a hip cafe. I come here at least once a month and always get a bagel egg sandwich! Always good and quick. Service is a little curt but overall it's a convenient place to go. Have also been here for lunch - their grilled cheese with tomato soup is really good. But no wifi???

Yelp
I live on the same block as this place so I come here quite often. The good: - the coffee. i LOVE LOVE LOVE the coffee here. I have never had a bad cup of coffee here, which is rare for coffee shops since it's easy to catch them at times when they haven't refilled their coffee in a while. Never had that problem with this place. Plus, you get a 25 cent discount if you bring your own mug! I also use their frequent buyer card where you get a free cup after 10 stamps. - the breakfast sandwiches. I got an egg/cheese wrap and it was great! Nothing crazy special or too out of the ordinary but it was good. - the vegetarian chicken salad: they had this on sample once and I'm so glad I tried it. It got me hooked! I normally never would have ordered it but thanks to the free sample, I tried it and will definitely look for it on the menu next time I go. The bad: - the service. If you are trying to come here in the morning for a quick cup of coffee on your way to work or class, come here early and leave a lot of time to get to work/class. They are really slow and don't seem to realize some people come here just for the good coffee and want to get in and out as fast as possible. - the salads. They're over-priced and really bad. This is one of the only places I have ever been to where the salad was bad. I got it with the seasoned tofu pieces, which were awful. I had one and threw out the rest. I also don't really care for the dressings here. If you're in the area, you might as well go to Sweet Green.

Yelp
Casual bohemian cafe featuring Metropolitan's baked goods, bistro tables and original art. French roast coffee was delicious as were the flaky croissants. We got there around 8 and split a delicious egg sandwich and a couple of the croissants. The place slowly filled up with scene-sters wearing UPenn sweatshirts and peg pants purportedly working on their tablets. By 11, they only had a few croissants remaining. Upbeat and efficient staff. Great place for a quick coffee

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite little cafes to go to. I'm not even just saying that because this is the place where I first met my now boyfriend from an online dating app, haha. They have pretty decent cold brew, vegan options, and fresh pastries! I frequently go to the reading terminal and pass by their location there so it's exciting to see they have their own place in university city! I have a thing for their bagels, which are really fresh-tasting and they have a quite a good cream cheese selection. Not sure if they have a vegan cream cheese (but if they don't, hope they hope on that band wagon soon!). They also have pretty okay croissants. Eventually, I would love to try their lattes and other coffees. I also like how they have their non-dairy milk out. Not many places give such an open option like that! Love it.

Yelp
Eh, not impressed. Expensive bakery goods and a place for a couple students to sit. I'd rather go to the Freshgrocer right next door and get the chicken meal deal. Probably best for their red velvet cupcakes when they offer them... otherwise the baguettes were too hard and I didn't like the cake.

Yelp
I've been to both the University City and Reading Terminal Market locations. Also, since Metropolitan bakes bread for many of the city's hottest restaurants, I have had ample occasions to eat their home baked goodies. First, I love the atmosphere: a softly lit, homey place which kind of reminds me of what I think Sherlock Holmes house would have looked like (don't ask me why). It is a great place to sit and read while eating a delicious bowl of soup with a slice of their soft and chewy bread on the side. Their pastries are equally as delightful and their brownies are out of this world. They are perfectly chocolaty and not too soggy. Yum.

Yelp
Terrible coffee and food even worse customer service. The owner is extremely rude, the place needs a real makeover.

Yelp
I think this is a great spot. It's a simple, well done café/bakery and I really don't think there are many better options in the area. I've only had their multigrain and everything bagels along with garlic herb cream cheese and iced Americano -- but I've yet to change my order because it's delicious! The bagels are good ( maybe not as good as Chestnut street bagels.. but that's not fair to compare), but their garlic herb is just as good as Chestnuts. The iced Americano is perfect, I wouldn't change a thing. I'm glad they offer soy milk in their fixings bar, some places charge extra for soy which I find ridiculous. They have a lot of fresh sandwich or breakfast items as well that are fairly priced . Not cheap, but fair. What bumps up this review to a 4 star is their service. I've been here multiple times and the gentleman at the counter is always so friendly and has a great smile on his face. I even witnessed a pretty darn rude customer right before me this morning, and he still brushed it off and treated me the same like nothing happened. Thanks for great service guys! **TIP** They always have 1/2 priced baked goods that are " day-old." I'm not even a college student anymore and I'll still eat day old for that deal!

Yelp
Wanted to stop in to buy a baguette for a meal I'm making today. Waited in line for 15 min on a busy Sunday. While waiting, an older woman w/ short white hair and glasses ran out from the back into the main seating area and yelled at all the students for taking up table space with their laptops. She came back to the register and was curt with a customer who asked if a bread they had tasted sour and she responded, "well it's not a SOURDOUGH so it wouldn't be SOUR then would it?" Then when it was my turn (with a million people waiting behind me) said "I'll be with you soon" and proceeded to count the tips in the tip jar. Then I ordered my baguette and it was $3.75. All I had was a credit card. I noticed the "we APPRECIATE a $10 min on credit cards" sign which did not say it was required. She wouldn't sell me the baguette so I walked out. Never going back.

Yelp
I love Metro!! The people are sweet and they have the funniest tip jars. The fact that they have no wifi is fantastic if you've brought a book or want to get some writing done. For breakfast, They have every type of bread you can think of, rye and pumpernickel and sourdough and multigrain, studded with nuts and seeds, etc. Their peanut butter is super chunky (definitely organic). They make their granola in-house, so I like to come for yogurt. Millet muffins are extraordinary, half price bread is quality. Breakfast sandwiches are also pretty satisfying! A great place for a breakfast to welcome you to the rest of your day.

Yelp
I love visiting Metropolitan Bakery. They are close and convenient to those living near Penn's campus, and they have outdoor seating in the summer. Unfortunately, the homeless try to monopolize those seats, but that's a fact of life in any big city. They have a wide menu, and they even offer catering. The sandwiches are a bit pricey, but they're delicious! I usually order a panini or a wrap for lunch with some fair trade coffee. It always hits the spot on a lazy weekend. Be prepared for a long line on the weekends though. It gets pretty busy!

Yelp
The nicest service I've received in Philly thus far. The ambiance is great - cozy, perfect for studying or getting coffee with a friend, art for sale, and no pressure to eat and leave. If only I could try everything on the menu! The vegan donut was delicious and the coffee was good and affordable. I'll be back!

Yelp
The basic breakfast sandwich was a massive let-down: the wheat bread was very thin and too sour for my taste, eggs were tasteless and rubbery and looked to be made from powder. The only reason for a 3-star review instead of 2 is that the bagel with whitefish and butter proved to be a reliably tasty option. Note also that this place is busy even at late breakfast time (around 9:30 am) on weekdays.
