15 Gloriously Messy Nachos to Try in NYC

"As nachos are not authentic regional Mexican food, it’s only right that superlative versions come from venues willing to mix up cultures. The barbecue-Mexican hybrid Mexicue offers a classic rendition of nachos with a poblano cheese sauce, black beans, pickled peppers, pico de gallo, and a sprinkling of cotija. But it’s worth the $4 surcharge to get them coated in smoky, sweet burnt ends chili. There are additional locations in Nomad and Times Square." - Paul Schrodt

17 Tequila Temples With Outstanding Agave-Based Drinks

"Mexicue is all about not taking itself too seriously, fusing Mexican street food with American barbecue. The bartenders at the roomy Nomad restaurant are friendly and well-practiced in slinging cocktails like the smoky margarita, served with a chili rim, which cuts the sweetness and fattiness of brisket tacos. The menu equally focuses on bourbon for the American side of things, but there are various flights of each spirit available. Additional locations are in Midtown and Chelsea." - Paul Schrodt, Eater Staff

Google
Went here on a Thursday after work was told they only had bar seating due to many reservations but we stayed 2 hours and those tables were never filled. The food was good, basic mexican with margaritas to match. I petsonally had the Sangria which was good but not strong compared to other Sangrias I have had, possible store bought. Music was good, but not appreciatedby the crowd it could of been a vibe if it was. Overall, a good quick spot on the fly not reservation worthy in my opinion.

Google
Big environment with attentive waiters/waitresses. I went on a Tuesday for their taco Tuesday special for $25 for unlimited tacos (but limited to 3 varieties: chicken, pulled pork, and avocado). There is an option to get happy hour drinks as well! The tacos were decently sized and very delicious ! There were hot sauces to spice up the tacos. Highly recommend this place!!

Google
Went for happy hour at Mexicue. Got a small nachos, fish taco, veggie taco, and shrimp taco. Small nachos were huge and awesome, fish and shrimp taco were good, veggie taco just ok. We also got happy hour 10 dollar margaritas, which you can customize the rim for. Nice vibes, servers are very attentive.

Google
We came for restaurant week back in July summer time of 2024. We had the guacamole which was interesting bc it had pomegranate seeds and green apple slices in it. The chicken quesadilla portion was huge, and the drink I ordered had a huge gummy on top! Love that. The complimentary chips were sprinkled with spice and huge, great to share! The street corn was shaved in front of u, which we loved a good presentation. It was creamy and buttery luv. My pulled pork was yummy it had good flavor and the jalapeños was guuud. The bathroom was ok.

Google
Foods are amazing! I tried brisket taco and smokey taco. Next time, I will try shrimp taco. But the top food is definitely corn. Corn is so delicious. Staffs are also so caring and kind. I liked the music and decoration, too. Prices are also reasonable.

Google
In NYC on vacation and popped in here for lunch. WOW, am I impressed. The staff is super kind, the food and drinks are reasonably priced AND I enjoyed everything I had. Their Hibiscus Passionfruit Margarita is the best margarita I have ever had- hands down. I would definitely come back next time I’m in the city!

Google
Food and vibes are really nice, can get a little busy but it's worth it! And the margaritas are incredible! Would highly recommend!! We definitely make time for a visit here whenever we come for a trip to the City!

Google
We came here with a large group for work dinner. Food was great and service was excellent. Food was ready very fast and the atmosphere was nice for chatting and group dynamics. Tacos are delicious and have an American twist! Try it if you are in the neighborhood.

Yelp
We came during July Restaurant Week 2024, and it was a pleasant experience. Our favs were the grilled street corn, the shape of the calamari, and the size of chips. The server was friendly and informative, and the gummy on top of my drink was yummmmy. The texture was my favorite. The quesdilla portion was so big! We were all shocked. Would come back to try their regular menu maybe soon!

Yelp
I came here on a Tuesday and they have a "Taco Tuesday" deal where it's happy hour all day and $25 for unlimited tacos for 90 minutes. So naturally, my friend and I did unlimited tacos. The only options you have for the unlimited taco deal are avocado, pork (not birria), or chicken tacos. I only had the chicken and pork tacos. I was honestly surprised that I liked the chicken more! Either way, each taco was STUFFED. They did not skimp out on the meat; I am impressed.

Yelp
Really amazing food at this restaurant it's a secret spot near Times Square We had tacos and nachos and fajitas Everything was fresh off the oven and tasted so good Even had the afternoon margaritas spicy margarita and a passionfruit margarita drinks really made well... Really like the blackened fish tacos and the smoky chicken tacos Will be def going back to try multiple other tacos Great service by the bartender and the waiter

Yelp
Great ambiance, good was delicious and the service was good. Stopped in on a whim for lunch. Solid choice. Had a margarita that was delicious too.

Yelp
I came to Mexicue a couple of years back. I remember I liked it but i can't recall loving it. However, something has changed. We went to Mexicue two weeks ago and we loved it so much that we went again this week. Everything we ordered was delicious. I highly recommend getting the nachos. They are definitely a large portion unless you make it for happy hour and get the smaller one. You must try the corn. It is really good!! In terms of the rest we have tried and liked- crispy fish taco, grilled fish taco, mushroom quesadilla, smoky chicken taco and avocado taco. We really liked the churros as well although the portion was large for two people. It was perfect for a group of four. The service is always on point as well. The food comes out quickly and water is always filled.

Yelp
Been to this location a couple times and they are very consistent. Guac to start is great -- fresh and light. Tried the fish, pork, brisket, and shrimp tacos. All very good! Fish and shrimp are probably the tastiest. Picture classic tacos with a bit of a twist. Portions are adequate. Service is quick and friendly. Usually busy but there is a lot of seating. Resys are a good idea but I have walked in with a small party and hasn't been an issue. Solid go-to for Mexican cuisine in the area.
google avatar

Beverly P.

Yelp
Sooo good ..loved the grilled fish taco and the taco salad. Perfect!! Fresh clean and authentic Mexican!
google avatar

Nehal A.

Yelp
We came back to Mexicue for a team linch. Tried some different items this time like tortilla dip sampler, Queso, salsa verde, guajillo chili and guacamole all were great quality dips. Chicken fajita was an incredible huge dish. Enchiladas looked so tasty too. Loved my shrimp and grilled fish tacos. Our server was super nice. We had a great lunch altogether.
google avatar

Shawn C.

Yelp
Great Mexican food near the Flatiron! It has a nice ambiance with vibrant mexican colors and some outdoor seating. The fajitas were great. I also like the shrimp tacos, smoky chicken tacos, and grilled street corn. Good portion sizes, reasonable prices, and good service.
google avatar

Natalie T.

Yelp
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this spot as I was afraid it'd be an overpriced and overhyped tourist place! I was definitely wrong because the portions were great value and portion and wow was it TASTY! The nachos alone are enough for 3-4 people, so we definitely got too much food but I'm not complaining! Maybe if the waiter gave a warning it was a lot would be ideal, but never a bad idea to go home with leftovers. The meat was super flavorful and the textures were on point with a nice contrast of crunchy to the softer bits. Would def go back with a larger group!
google avatar

Chiamaka N.

Yelp
Very good experience. Came here with some girlfriends and decided to try out the street corn and a shrimp taco, and it was really good. The street corn was served as strips of the cob, and the Cajun mayo sauce that they pair it with was delicious. The shrimp tacos were okay, good enough to eat but nothing that was super mind blowing. All in all, I'd give it a 8.5/10 and would return if I was craving Mexican food.
google avatar

Yelp
Great appetizers and well concocted drinks. Customer service was great but it was slow the time we walked in so there's wasn't that big of a crowd. This place is great to walk into after you've had several drinks and need food to sober up. Cute vibe and in a great area for bar hopping
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by here for lunch and wow, Mexicue did not disappoint. When we first walked in the ambiance of the place felt super cool - bright, colorful, and open. We were seated immediately and our server has to be one of the friendliest servers I've ever had. He immediately recommended items to us off the menu which I loved! And the food... did not lack flavor in any way. The smoky chicken burrito was absolutely perfect. It was packed with incredible flavors and grilled just right. I absolutely loved the slaw that it came with too. Overall I would definitely recommend giving Mexicue a try! It's definitely on my list of places to come back to sometime.
google avatar

Bridget M.

Yelp
This salad was JUST what I was craving. Not a bad price either for the size. I could have added chicken for an additional $5 if I wanted to. The salad was mixed so well, perfectly dressed, and was chopped perfectly. Great fresh flavors! They have a great happy hour Monday-Friday 3-6 as well (I didn't partake but it was good for drinks and some food options). Service was great and my waiter was super friendly!

Siaori S.

Yelp
The service was amazing and fast ! My bartender was the GREAT HARRY ! Go see him make sure to leave 20% he will not let you down ! The ambiance was an authentic Mexican bar meets new York urban flow ! It was amazing music and not too pricey you pay for what you get ! TEQUILA AND MEZCAL LOVERS COME HERE !!! Even the artwork on the wall draws you in
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic food and service!! Start with chips, salsa and guacamole and then tacos. We will definitely return.
google avatar

Yelp
In a nutshell, Mexicue is good, and I'd go again, but it's not somewhere I'd be dying to suggest to friends visiting from out of town. Lots of flavor in both the smoky chicken burrito and BBQ Brisket Rice Bowl, and both are pretty filling as well. The biggest disappointment was with the chips and guacamole, which was yummy, but definitely overpriced ($15 for chips and guac!?). The service was friendly, but on the slower side. And the interior of the restaurant has some fun decor, but feels a little cramped.
google avatar

Daniela H.

Yelp
Used to love coming here for happy hour. I was craving the brisket nachos so I just ordered to go. My friends got the Smokey chicken burrito and JamBurrito. Wanted to love the food but it just wasn't the same. The brisket used to be so tender it would melt in your mouth. It was tough. Great portion size for $23 and loads of brisket but just disappointed with the taste. My friend had the Smokey chicken burrito and felt it tasted weird. It had more of a Chinese Thai flavor ? Than Mexican. The JamBurrito was the favorite!
google avatar

Marianne F.

Yelp
I ordered the tacos, they were dry, not very flavorful, quite pricey. The margaritas were decent though.
google avatar

Shengyu G.

Yelp
I came here after work during their Happy Hour. I ordered house margarita and pull pork taco. I was pretty impressed. The drink is pretty decent. It's not too strong but not watery like the ones from other pubs. I also enjoyed the tacos ($15). Each order has two tacos. The pull pork is juicy and flavorful. Corn and cilantro also added flavor to the taco. Very delicious! I like the vibe in MexiCUE. The music makes the place very chill and it's not too loud so people can have proper conversations. It's good for casual drinks by the bar or group dining. Definitely will be back again!

Yelp
Sat Night, let's start positive, the vibe was nice great ambiance. The service was lacking big time the waiter forgot us and was staring off in space and fed others that arrived after us before taking our order. We were gabbing as friends so we made no big deal. The margaritas were so delicious that's a fact. However the taco birria priced at 9.50 that came out as 1 taco only, but constructed or cooked as a real birria with exactly one bite of cheese in the middle in a steamed tortilla was a huge disappointment. I ordered another taco the brisket which was really nice and just missing something...oh that's right a Mexican place with note one single salsa or picante served or offered. I had to chase down the staff for some halfway through my 2 $20 tacos that came with nothing else. If you're looking to drink and hang have a snack here. It's not an order of tacos and if you want anything that may well come along with the cuisine ask up front. Menus were hard to read very faint print on ingredients.
google avatar

Jenny N.

Yelp
Excellent sangria and house margaritas! I love that they offer pitcher size. The guac is delcious! I made a reservation for 4 to meet up with friends. I was the first in my party to arrive, I was greeted promptly and seated. The disappointing thing is that the tables are too close together. So sometimes you're talking over each other's conversations or having to raise your voice because you cannot hear. Other than that, staff was highly attentive with checking on us. I appreciated their patience while we waited for our friends who were running late. They have both indoor and outdoor dining, perfect way to enjoy the weather.
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
The good folks at Corona had the brilliance of hosting a Cinco de Mayo event here and HOLY GUACAMOLE WAS THE FOOD BANGING'!! I was borderline gluttonous. It was likely visually jarring for other to see me stuffing my face with so much goodness, but it was personally so satisfying. Washing it down with my favorite beer made it even more so. The staff were super cool and kept the bites coming. And while the restaurant itself was beautiful, a special shoutout must be made for the spacious and hella clean bathroom. We don't talk about those things enough. Especially when the taco eating experience must start and end with clean hands for optimal enjoyment. Anyway, this review is your cue to hit Mexicue. You're welcome.
google avatar

Jenna Z.

Yelp
Pretty darn solid Mexican food! No wait to get seated on a Tuesday evening for a party of 2. We came at the tail end of happy hour and got the margaritas + chips and salsa. Margaritas were delicious! I also ordered the brisket taco + the grilled cod taco. The brisket taco was a bit salty but the grilled cod was amazing! Very delicious. I'm docking one star because this ended up being a pretty expensive meal for what it was, drink + two tacos + chips + salsa were around 40 with tip which I find a bit overpriced. Overall still good, would recommend!
google avatar

Ruby D.

Yelp
Except for the host making us sit at the bar when there were plenty of seats, we had a great time. The food and drinks are always good here. Service quick and ambience casual. The shrimp was cooked really well. Good salad and hot sauce. Not sure why my husband only got three quesadillas and not four? Usually they come with four.
google avatar

Cole E.

Yelp
Got a little hot shopping around and needed a bite as well as some water. Spotted Mexicue, decided to pop in and was served by Juan who is amazing! A little bit of a slower volume time so we spent some time talking about New York & Texas, creating a personable experience! Not just an order taker, which I love. Was torn between the seasonal marg and the montauk marg... I explained what I like in my typical margarita and Juan suggested the Montauk... all I can say is perfect recommendation! Poblano queso was a hit as well. If I was hungrier I would've gone with the Brisket Burrito which I can't wait to try the next time I'm here! Didn't catch the bartenders name but, mixes very well. Awesome atmosphere & vibe, super glad I stopped by!

Daria B.

Yelp
Veeeeeryyyyy goooddd Our server was amazing Stefanie was so friendly Food was very good too
google avatar

Lia F.

Yelp
Food was AMAZING! I wish I got the enchilada because it tasted heavenly. The tostada (what I got) was also pretty good. The corn is really good as well. Also some reviews said the service was bad but our service was great
google avatar

Alberto G.

Yelp
Amazing service, thank you Ana for your warm and welcoming hospitality! This is one of my favorite places in nomad and my most recent visit was special, for the first time I tried the brisket burrito & a montauk margarita and it was honestly wow-ing. I still can't stop thinking about it, I'll be sure to get Ana's spicy margarita suggestion next time. Cheers

Yelp
It was so nice! My boyfriend and I came here for our 4 year anniversary and we were originally worried because it was packed and we had no reservation ( would definitely recommend making a reservation) we got seated at the bar, but everything was great the bartender was super friendly and we talked about my boyfriend practicing his español, the drinks were good and the food was heaven sent FORREAL!.
google avatar

Yelp
Was looking for a taco spot and so glad we came here. Atmosphere was loud and lively around 6pm. Walked in with no reservation and seated within 2 mins. Server Ines was friendly and great. Food came out within 10 mins and were excited. Presentation was of the food was colorful and looked yummy. Food was great and would deff return!!

Yelp
Smokey Margarita | Chicken Tacos | Chill Smokey Margarita - we come to this place every year for the Smokey Margarita. A friend worked at a bank around the corner, and we have gone to Mexicue every year for the past six years (minus 2020 for COVID) to consume one of our favorite cocktails in the city. HOWEVER - it was very underwhelming. We sent the first one back; the second one was "okay" at best. Chicken Tacos - I had the chicken Tacos. I had three. They were the highlight of the meal. They were the perfect lunch meal because I was hungry but not starving. Chill - Overall, the place is super chill. It is the ideal spot for a quick lunch or happy hour after work. I highly recommend it as a place to end the work day or start your night out. Also, if you want a quick bite and a good spot for a conversation with friends or co-workers, this is also a great spot. Why not five stars - we came for the smokey margarita, but the first one was mistakingly made as a traditional margarita. The remake was barely smokey. Overall, the cocktail we went to the restaurant for was very underwhelming. Therefore, they lost a star. Pro Tip: No parking in the area, so definitely plan on walking/ubering/cabbing.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
Came in around 8:30/9PM and there weren't too many people inside! We ordered drinks and the nachos with brisket and both the drinks and nachos came out immediately! The nachos were so. Good. The brisket was amazing and it was 100% unnecessary to get any more food since the nachos were piled high!
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
So, I had Mexican food in NYC. You can take the girl out of south Texas, but you can't take the south Texas out of the girl. I so wanted queso. I did know that the Mexican food was not going to be the same, but it was pretty close. The poblano queso was great. Good flavor. The chips were crispy. So, I wanted to be healthy and ordered the trippy taco salad while my family has the tree carne DIY tacos. I did cheat and tried some of their food. The taco salad wasn't what I am used to. It was more of just a salad. It did have a lot of guacamole which I have no complaints about. Who doesn't love avocado? The tres carne DIY tacos are definitely enough for 4-5 grown adults. There was plenty of food. The sides included rice, beans, cole slaw and corn. We had so much food left over. The margaritas were perfect. They do sell them by the pitcher. I love the outside seating. We people watched

Yelp
Wait a minute . Friendly staff and great food ??? In NYC?? Seriously. Great food , killer drinks and a bright colorful interior which makes me homesick for my time in Mexico. Enjoy . I do suggest reservations because they do get packed pretty fast.

Yelp
Amazing service, amazing food, the ambiance was very vibrant and fun. I would definitely recommend this spot for a #TacoTuesday

Yelp
booked our reservation last minute but so glad we did. its super cute inside the toilet plunger is a cactus lol. we started with chips & guac and their chips are so thick and warm. then for mains we got smoky chicken stacked enchilada, brisket stacked enchilada, and the birria plate. the birria plate is HUGE. deff worth the value. my stacked chicken enchiladas were so creative and yummy. highly reccomend. also they load everything up with pickled onions which is nice.

Yelp
Loved MEXiCUE! It was busy throughout the night so I'd recommend a reservation if you can but also it's very walk-in friendly. We had a nice corner booth but it did get quite loud during our visit. The house margaritas were awesome - like so much better than your standard house marg! They weren't too sweet and really hit the spot. Their Nashville Hot Chicken taco is a must try, but I will warn you that it is quite spicy! So flavorful and delicious, wish I had gotten 2! I also got their crispy fish taco which was alright but the Nashville Hot Chicken taco blew it out of the water. We got the chips and verde salsa, we were told that was the hotter of the two options but it was extremely mild, I was a little disappointed! I also got the Hibiscus Margarita which was good but the House Marg was definitely better!
google avatar

Iclyn B.

Yelp
The margaritas were good! However, I can't comment on the tacos since the lobster tacos are no longer on the menu. The bartender was okay; he checked to see if I needed another drink after my first one was finished. The ambiance was cool but basic, with a happy hour vibe that reminded me of a fast food chain setup.
google avatar

Maggie M.

Yelp
Went to Mexicue the first time yesterday evening with a few friends. When looking at the menu, the food feels limited and there's not enough options of meats and alot of toppings looks the same and not enough variety. We also didn't have a great experience with the waitress that was serving us cause she kept coming back and asking for our order when we told her we need time to look at the menu. It felt rushed. When we got our foods, the timing wasn't too long and the foods tasted okay, it could've been better with some seasonings. After we finish eating, the same waitress came back and rush us to pay our meal. I notice when the paying begun, it didn't let us select our gratuity on our own and end up auto select to 25% which was strange and shady. Overall, the experience could've been better, the service should've not rushed, and we shouldn't have to be forced to pay a certain gratuity where we feel the whole experience isn't great.

Yelp
My visit to Mexicue at 225 5th Ave was nothing short of fantastic! The food was a delightful fusion of Mexican and barbecue flavors, creating a unique and mouthwatering experience. The service was exceptional, with attentive staff who went above and beyond to make our dining experience enjoyable. The ambiance struck the perfect balance between casual and trendy, making it an ideal spot for both a casual meal and a night out. Mexicue has earned its place as one of my favorite spots in the city, especially when Mark is there!- five stars all the way!
google avatar

Monique F.

Yelp
Cute little New York City Mexican restaurant! Authentic Mexican taste and one thing I truly love is that they had mocktails on the menu!!! I so love that they had platter. Where you get two tacos salad rice and beans and Mexican-style corn everything was beyond delicious I really enjoyed the mocktail as well!!!
google avatar

Danny L.

Yelp
Decent food with a great atmosphere. The noise level during dinner on a weeknight is just right--not to loud to be drowned in noise but just loud enough to have the atmosphere buzzing. We ordered the chicken burrito and the chicken enchilada. The chicken burrito was good and decent portion size for the price. We didn't like the enchilada as much--not enough red sauce and a bit dry. As a heads up, the tortilla was a flour tortilla, not the corn tortilla that we were expecting. Service was very friendly.

Juan P.

Yelp
Service... They sit you, bring out food.. And forget about... But ready for esta tip Food is ok Location is great

Yelp
I really enjoyed this spot. The vibes are cute and have Mexican themed decorations. The reason I give this place 5 stars is because i really enjoyed my Jambalaya bowl. The tacos were the second best tacos I've ever had. The rice and beans were tasty. The corn was the best corn I've ever had. All went downhill when I found a hair in my food :(. I know it's the food industry and it's possible. We are all human so it happens. What made me happy was their response. They were quick to making sure that I either had a fresh plate or it taken off my order. I am thankful for how caring they were about the situation because I did feel bad. I had eaten half and finding the hair, I could not continue. But their response is why I give them five stars. My friends had tacos, nachos, and also a jambalaya bowl. Everyone loved their food and so did I. Despite the small inconvenience, the time spent was great. Another reason why I give them 5 stars is they had the best margaritas for happy hour. The margaritas weren't too sweet but they were very strong I'd recommend here if you're looking for tacos and want a nice vibe.

Yelp
My experience was good because the waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable to my questions. The tacos and drinks were good. This is a nice first date spot. Also, tacos are priced as one taco so be aware it does add up. I did wish they had a more expanded drink menu, I know they can serve many cocktails but from their drink menu it felt limited.
google avatar

Ivan M.

Yelp
Food was great! Service could have been better, server was seemed to busy, but ambiance was good.

Yelp
I've been to Mexicue Bryant Park before and absolutely loved the tacos - so I decided to try out the Nomad location because it seems a bit bigger. I'd give this location a solid 3.5/5. I ordered the fried avocado taco and seasonal: Spicy Smoky Wild Mushroom taco. The fried avocado taco was alright and same with the seasonal one - but I wouldn't order the seasonal one again.. it just didn't have any memorable or unique taste. I don't know what it was about the food at this location but I just wasn't impressed. Perhaps I had such a great experience with the food at the Bryant Park location that I was expecting that top quality again. Other than the food, I will say that this location is much bigger. There was plenty of space in the restaurant and we didn't feel crammed at all. We also stayed at our table and chatted for 1.5 hours after we ate our tacos - most restaurants would have kicked us out if we wanted to stay so long. The service was also great. The waiter was friendly and quick and efficient. I'd recommend Mexicue - maybe I just got unlucky with my order on this day but I do think that it is a solid place for tacos.

Yelp
This place was a very solid surprise. Great service, drinks and tacos. Delicious all around. I'll definitely be going back.
