The 14 Hottest New Restaurants in Houston, May 2024

"Chef Chris Kinjo’s highly anticipated MF Lobster & Ceviche opened in Autry Park. The French-Vietnamese restaurant has found a solid home in the 14-acre urban district. Like other businesses in the community, the elegant restaurant is known for its thoughtful, refined fare, which centers the versatile lobster. Find the crustaceans pressed within a decadent grilled cheese sandwich, bathed in a creamy sauce with linguine, or cooked with brown butter and nestled within warm, doughy bao buns." - Brittany Britto Garley, Kayla Stewart

Google
Great experience at MF Lobster. The service was wonderful and the food was excellent. Pricing is very fair for the quality of the dishes. The lobster bisque was really good to start. The chili prawn and grilled oysters were tasty but the raw oysters lacked flavor despite a small dressing of wasabi on top so will avoid those next time. Lobster tacos and the lobster roll hit the spot as mains for sure. Overall great experience and can't wait to get back to try some of their other items on the menu.

I came during the shift change. The staff were very friendly and helpful in recommending signature dishes to try and I was not disappointed. The drinks were made with attention to detail and were very tasty. This staff definitely took pride in making our experience as well as possible considering the shift change.

Google
We had a very pleasant dinner. The dining environment, service and food were excellent. One of the best lobster rolls I’ve ever had. The mussels in garlic sauce were also very good. The crudo however was just okay. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Google
Found this gem while searching for some good lobster rolls and boy were amazed. Waiter recommended a few good wines but they were out of the one we were leaning towards, so we got an Argentinian Pinot noir. Wine was great got a bottle . As an appetizer we got the spicy tuna avocado tartar. Tuna was tossed in a wasabi based sauce with some fresh avocado and sliced Serrano Pepper with some greens on top. Flavor was very refreshing and light. Next dish was the mussels and bread, mussels came out cooked just right in white wine garlic butter sauce. Sauce was so good , that you used the bread to finish all the sauce! They have a few types of rolls but the waiter recommended the Butter chives lobster roll. The lobster was cooked to perfection , with a light refreshing lemony butter sauce, and perfectly toasted roll. Best lobster roll I’ve had in Houston. Lobster bisque was not heavy cream based as most , bisque had great flavor and was also light and refreshing. Definitely looking forward to trying some of the waiters suggestions: lobster tacos , lobster bao and any of the ceviche’s.

Google
It's a small but beautiful place. Inside is more glamorous for a nice date night, outside is more relaxed for a laidback night. Beautiful atmosphere inside and out. It is without a doubt that the lobsters, oysters, n clams are super fresh n sweet. Keep in mind when I describe the lobsters or seafood as being "sweet", i don't mean that they are sweet like desserts. I mean u can taste the natural sweetness of the fresh seafoods, rather than frozen seafoods that have been marinaded in salt water and they have lost their natural sweetness. Best clam chowder I've ever had, loaded with sweet tasty clams in every bite! Lobster bisque was also amazing, clean tasting broth with fresh chunks of lobster, it's rare to find a good lobster bisque that's not briny. Lobster rolls r also super buttery and loaded with fresh lobsters. But let's talk about the lobster bao, omg.. all these years growing up in china town, I've never had a bao like this.. believe me when I say the bao is so amazing! It's super thin, warm, soft n chewy, but light, NOT doughy, spongy, or dry like the baos u eat in china town. It is also loaded with huge chunks of crispy baked lobsters in this amazing creamy Japanese mayo and unagi sauce.

Google
We came opening weekend and absolutely loved it. We ordered the house salad, a cucumber martini, lobster bisque, lobster tacos and lobster ceviche. We gave everything a 10 out of 10 except on the lobster bisque my husband rates that is six. I love lobster bisque and I’m pretty picky I think it was eight. I will definitely wear it again. Everything else was fantastic, Staff great. Restaurant design was great. 👍🏼👍🏼 Bringing our son back to try the lobster roll.

I had a wonderful meal tonight at MF Lobster & Ceviche. I was the first one to dine here on opening day and very impressed with the food and staff. I could not have had a better experience and can’t wait to try other items on the menu. Lobster Roll, Lobster Ceviche and Clam Chowder were all exceptional.

Google
Top! Recommend. Will return. Chose the scallop ceviche which had a hint of spice, very fresh and supple, and the chips were crispy and light. Lobster bisque was creamy and flavorful. We enjoyed the mussels and the white wine sauce. I will order all these again. Also, sitting outside facing the park and with live mellow music was a very enjoyable. Inside is beautiful, but a was a little cold for us.

Becky L.

Yelp
The food was 8/10. Everything we ordered was tasty. The butter lobster roll was excellent, the bread was top tier. The clam chowder was 7/10, the flavor and spice was there but I found the clam to be a bit chewy. The service was 10/10. Water was consistently refilled and the waitress was very nice. The ambiance 8/10.

Yelp
Beautiful space and great concept. We ordered lobster ceviche (5/5), clam chowder (4.5/5, there is a kick of spice)), naked oysters (4.5/5, very fresh), tempura lobster bao (5/5) and lobster linguine (5/5)! Service was very on point! We will return

Yelp
Great find in Houston - loving the clean architecture and decor of this restaurant. Classy and chic and just a perfect place to catch up With friends Service is always on point and they try their very best to accommodate requests We thoroughly enjoy their menu with focus on seafood. Try their clams in white wine sauce, the lobster linguine and lobster taco- out of this world

Yelp
this sounds so silly but its absolutely pretty much only lobster and ceviche at this restaurant lol!!! definitely make sure your entire party likes to eat one of those things or else they won't have much to eat on. I really enjoyed their clam chowder alot and the space indoors is beaaaaaaaaautiful. service was really nice and fast and you can see the chef walked around to ask everyone how everything was. besides the clam chowder and a linguine dish (i believe the tomato based sauce was the stand out) we got most of the rest of the menu and it was okay. we ordered a whole lobster and surprisingly for such a nice restaurant and ambiance we had to open it ourselves with our hands and crackers. i would expect that at like joe's crab shack or red lobster but not at a steakhouse or someplace of this caliber. not to mention it was brought out at the end so we ended our meal with lobster juice up to our wrists and the table was a mess. it was very weird lol. another down is that there's only one restroom, albeit beautiful. there's also patio dining as well so when the weather is nice this would be a nice brunch occasion spot. if i was craving seafood i'd probably stay going to MF sushi unless i was specifically craving a lobster roll. the lobster roll wasn't bad either, but i expected a little more.

Yelp
MF Lobster & Ceviche is a seafood restaurant in Autry Park by Chris "Magic Fingers" Kinjo, chef and owner of the Museum District's acclaimed MF Sushi, and his longtime collaborator chef Miguel Alvarez. The restaurant itself was designed by the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture (behind Uchi, Da Gama, il Bracco, etc.), and the 2,200-square-foot space is touted as Houston's only completely round restaurant. It seats 65 people inside with room for an additional 60 on a dog-friendly patio. They offer valet parking for $8 (plus tip). [COCKTAILS] +Old Fashioned Cocktail (bourbon, bitters, demerara, and orange) for $16 - This was a perfect Old Fashioned. From the quality of this cocktail, I would come back and try others. - 5/5 [OYSTER/CLAM] +Dress Oysters (6) for $21 - You can get the same oysters naked and dress them yourselves, but why bother? These were also amazing. - 5/5 [LOBSTER] +Lobster Ceviche for $21 - 5/5 +Lobster Roll with Butter Chives for $36 - 5/5 +Brown Butter Lobster Bao (3) for $32 - The brown butter made this item taste a bit weird. I personally don't think brown butter mixes well with lobster, but that could be just me. Personally, I wouldn't get this item again. - 3/5 Overall, MF Lobster & Ceviche was an incredible dining experience from the circular restaurant, amazing cocktails, and a variety of lobster dishes. I brought my 9-week-old son, and I also saw other children dining with their parents. I would highly recommend checking this place out; although everything is high-quality, the atmosphere is chill, and you can go for a walk after in Autry Park!

Yelp
The title says it all!! We wanted to try MF Lobster & Ceviche because we are obsessed with MF. As stated earlier, the title does say it all. They pretty much only serve lobster dishes and incorporate a variety of dishes with lobster. We ordered tacos, pasta, ceviche, oysters, and of course drinks! I will say the menu is small and everything we tried was good. The ambiance and service was amazing but I hope they try to extend their menu options! Drinks were really good though. I'd definitely would give it a try if you guys are MF fans. Our favorite item was the lobster roll.
google avatar

Yelp
The two dishes we tried were delicious. I can't wait to go back for more! The service was attentive, agreeable and not intrusive. The decor is clean, sharp, bright, modern and trendy. We'll go back!

Yelp
We went to MF lobster & ceviche 2 days after the grand opening. I think the restaurant has potential on being amazing but needs a little work. The service took 45 minutes to get seated and then 1.5 hours to get Mac n cheese/ lobster bisque and lobster tacos. They were very apologetic and comped us on drinks so it made us feel better about the wait. As far as the food, we felt like the lobster was lost in all of the dishes. The Mac n cheese was our favorite but the cheese had over powered the lobster. The lobster bisque needed more flavor, it reminded me of chicken broth. Then the lobster tacos were good but had too much tomatillo sauce. I think over time, these dishes can be stellar, just right now needs some work. We will try again in the future! Again, nice staff but needs a little time to perfect.

Yelp
We celebrated our anniversary here and I have never had a more attentive, kind, and knowledgeable waiter. They even gave us some champagne to toast to our seven years. All of the food was delicious along with the cocktails and wine selection. Their entire restaurant was remarkable from the floors to the curtains.

Yelp
We had a lovely dinner at MF! Their lychee martinis are on point. Decor is minimalist, clean and modern. Service is excellent! We had clam chowder, yellowtail crudo, lobster tempura and a whole steamed lobster. I would say the crudo was good, but quite a small dish for the price. The soup is plentiful! They know how to prepare lobster, ours was lovely.

Yelp
Gorgeous ambiance, friendly staff and fantastic food! My top 3 favorite things were the clam chowder (must try), dressed oysters and the lobster roll. *chef's kiss

Yelp
We had a good dinner at MF Lobster & Ceviche. Our group tried a bunch of items: -Clam chowder: I haven't eaten clam chowder in ages, and this one was very good--I enjoyed it, and it was big enough for two of us to share (though I guess it may be a bit odd to share soup?). -Lobster roll with butter: I love lobster rolls, and this one was yummy--I also liked the chips that came with it. -Ceviche: The ceviche was super fresh and tasty. (Sorry, I can't remember which one we had! There are a few options.) -Grilled whole lobster: One of our friends is from the east coast (aka lobster expert), and he said this lobster was perfectly fine on east coast standards but likely one of the best in Houston. Service was just OK. While our server seemed nice, she wanted to immediately take our order, and, when we asked for a little more time, she was gone for a really long time. We also asked her to pace out our food, but a bunch of our entrees came out at the same time, and before the entrees. Service needs some work to meet up with those price tags. Even though the restaurant's website states that it doesn't take reservations and only has walk-ins and a waitlist, I was able to make a reservation on OpenTable. But if the restaurant takes away the option for reservations, I won't be frequenting MF Lobster & Ceviche--it's too hard planning a dinner with friends without a reservation.

Yelp
on the whim, we so happen to stop by on their first night of opening. we ended up being sat outside due to us having our pet with us. they graciously accommodated us with heaters as it was chilly that evening. -we ordered a bunch of crudo dishes. presentation is beautiful but they are all garnished the same -the lobster tacos were very mediocre. not much flavor and all we tasted was the shell of the tacos -lobster roll was decent but nothing spectacular. -mussels were the best thing we all enjoyed -lobster mac and cheese was very dry with barely any lobster in it -bisque took forever to come out. they kindly gave us 2 extra ones bc of the wait. the bisque was soooo watery, it did not taste like a bisque at all food took extremely long to come out. i'm not sure if it's because we were sitting outside. I did not go inside the restaurant to see how busy they were. I believe we were one of the last ones to arrive or they were either really slow bc we had to ask if they were open. our tab was nearly $700 and everyone left hungry. for the price, we were all expecting to be full but instead we went back to a friends place and ordered pizza.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday evening for dinner and started with their old man and the sea martini drink. It was very well balanced and spirit forward. My dining partner and I started with raw oysters and shared the cioppino. We had the lobster roll with butter as our main. I thought the seafood was very fresh and the flavors were well balanced. The server was kind and attentive. I love the ambiance of this restaurant - the perfectly round concept is super unique.
google avatar

Alexis G.

Yelp
Had the grilled lobster, clams, yellowtail and lobster ceviche. Also ordered the oysters but they never came. The grilled lobster could have a bit more flavor, the lobster ceviche and the clams were ok. The menu is very limited.

Yelp
Our new favorite restaurant, MF Lobster & Ceviche on Autry Park. From the uniquely shaped building, fine architecture, to the perfectly hand selected furnishings, everything was very well thought out including the menu. Salmon Crudo, hot mussels, lobster roll with butter chives, dressed clams, Japanese sea bream crudo, lobster ceviche. Every bite was pure perfection.

Yelp
First time there at the new location and they hit it at the park. That was a great food experience trying out the new restaurant with the limited menus still great dishes, being prepared and presented that day. deserving style was very helpful in assisting me with my food choices.

S R.

Yelp
Scrumptious meals (aside from the House Salad which wasn't anything to write home about). The Lobster salad had a great wasabi dressing & lots of fresh lobster The Lobster Roll is "mini" - it's small & comes with a side of House Chips. However, it is Outstanding & generous amounts of very fresh, plump lobster. The Lychee Martini is tempered with pear & was perfectly delicate, yet still gave the martini kick The lobster tempura was golden, yet the dressing that comes with it could use more spice or zest. It's essentially oil butter. 5 stars for the freshness, generous serving of lobster & hospitality of hostesses & serving staff My 2 recommendations are add a dessert menu (fresh seasonal) & I wanted to catch the end of the Astros game, but the restaurant doesn't show the game. I understand however that not everyone wants to hear a game over dinner.

Johnny B.

Yelp
I like this place. It's clean, the food is tasty, and the service is good (maybe too attentive). The food always tastes fresh and I give major compliments to the chef with how the seafood taste is the primary flavor you get from each meal and not the other stuff going on with the dish. I would suggest the clam chowder with every meal. So why 3 stars? The portions are small. Like really small. Everything is fantastic, but you will have to order a lot to take care of two people. My suggestion, treat this place for a pre-dinner drinking spot. Have a couple of snacks and cocktails here. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Don K.

Yelp
An absolutely delightful experience. Waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. Drinks were marvelous (drink prices were a bit high for the size). We has the Lobster Linguini, Lobster Bao and the oyster sampler. All were delicious. Lobster was served in large pieces and you could tell it was fresh. We will definately be back.

Vanessa T.

Yelp
Excellent service! Tuna crudo & oysters were fresh. Lobster bao is a must. Highly recommend, can't wait to be back.
google avatar

Riley S.

Yelp
Expected better from the MF group. Lobster was overcooked and dripping grease on the baked lobster roll. Ceviches and crudos were overpriced and underwhelming. They were out of mussels and clams so we were unable to try those. Lobster pasta lacked seasoning. Ambiance was great and beautiful space, just disappointing meal.

Jarrett S.

Yelp
Very fresh great tasting seafood. Nice ambiance and great service. Every dish was excellent.

Anam H.

Yelp
This place is gorgeous, the service was amazing but the food! I assumed that a restaurant with ceviche in the name would have a fresh and flavorful and memorable ceviche. I may have just been very fortunate to have had wonderful ceviches in the past which may color my experience but this ceviche (we got the lobster ceviche) was bland, only had approximately 5 chunks of lobster, and was a meager portion (maybe 1/2 a cup?). Additionally the onions and tomato of the ceviche tasted dried out and not as flavorful as one would expect. Now the lobster roll (we got the lobster roll with butter chives) the bread was exquisite- crunchy and flavorful- but the lobster was giving us nothing, there was hardly any flavor and it was chewy and tough. Additionally (and i understand there are some space constraints) there is just one bathroom stall (unisex) and no outside/attached hand washing area. Considering that the food is all handheld I would recommend the restaurant supply warm damp hand clothes so the customers may wipe their hands, as having to go to the external bathroom in the park is a bit of a hassle when you simply need to wash your hands. TLDR; beautiful restaurant, good service, food 6/10 would not recommend for the food but would for ambience.

Daniel N.

Yelp
We've been big fans of MF and Ume, and we were excited to try their new restaurant when we saw it pop up near us. We made a reservation and came in on a Thursday night the first week after they opened. If you're familiar with MF, you know they know how to do ambiance. It's no different for their new restaurant MF Lobster & Ceviche. From the outside, the completely round restaurant resembles a futuristic yurt with floor to ceiling windows and a spacious patio area that overlooks Autry Park. The inside has a beautiful and modern aesthetic. From the polished stone floors to the brass toggle switches in the bathroom, there is a clear attention to detail. It's a great setting for a classy - but not stuffy - date night. After dinner you could grab a scoop of ice cream from Lick (once it opens) nearby and take a stroll around the park. One potential issue we found is that the restaurant could be a little loud. We're not sure if it's from the sound bouncing off the rounded walls or a lack of insulation, but it was a little hard for us to hear one another or the server without leaning in and raising our voices. This was with the restaurant half empty as well, so we would imagine it could be a lot louder if the restaurant was full. Regarding parking, there are paid street parking spots around the park or the retail parking garage nearby which is $3 for 2 hours. With new restaurants we usually expect a few hiccups as people are still finding their flow and being trained, but we felt the service here was great. A manager greeted us outside and opened the door for us as we entered, and they checked in on us midway through our meal. Our server was nice and attentive and our water was refilled like clockwork. We would've appreciated a rundown of the menu, but being as loud as it was, we were probably better off reading through it ourselves. When we asked for recommendations, our server suggested we try a cold dish (a Crudo, sashimi, or ceviche), and then a soup or salad and then an entree. We took their advice and ordered everything below which was a good amount shared between the two of us. Onto the food. We ordered: Tuna Crudo - 9/10. Not much to say here. Tuna tasted fresh, well dressed. Wouldn't expect anything less from MF. Ask for chopsticks. Lobster Bisque - 10/10 Our server warned us it was a 20 minute lead time for the lobster bisque. We weren't sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised when it came out with a large puff pastry topper. It was delicious. Usually with lobster bisques, I'm worried about it being too salty or too rich. This was neither. Very well balanced and big chunks of lobster inside. Lobster Roll with Butter Chives - 9/10 Well seasoned lobster, perfectly cooked. The roll itself reminded us of Raising Cane's buttered toast but better. Brown Butter Lobster Bao - 8/10 The baos themselves were very good. Light, fluffy, moist. Personal preference, we thought this dish was missing a little something. More brown butter? A sauce or aioli? Not quite sure. We liked the lobster roll a little bit more. Lobster Mac and Cheese - 8/10 We probably could've done without this dish, but we're suckers for mac and cheese so we ordered this side as well. We would've liked it cheesier. We love cheese. Overall we were happy with the food. You can tell the fresh lobster is the highlight of each lobster dish. This may be the reason they keep the sauce light on the baos and the cheese light in the mac and cheese. If you're craving lobster or looking for a place to have a nice dinner that isn't sushi, this place fits the bill. It's definitely unique and worth a try. Looking forward to coming back and trying their other dishes.

Cathy L.

Yelp
Chef Kinjo and his team have done it again! I can think of no better way to enjoy the freshest clams, mussels and lobster than in this stunning new space. The thoughtful attention to architectural & interior design is reflected in the careful composition of each dish. A few of our favorites of the night: 1. raw clams with fresh wasabi & and vibrant mignonette -- This will awaken all of your senses! 2. clam chowder -- comforting yet elegant with a heat that builds - an unforgettable bowl that I still daydream about. 3. lobster tacos -- freshly made corn tortillas hold a copious amount of lobster garnished with mango pico de gallo & served with two kinds of sauces If you love lobster or seafood, you will not be disappointed. Well done!

Elijio S.

Yelp
We tried MF Lobster last night. We are big lobster fans and had read some great reviews. Atmosphere was great. Managers and greeting staff were very attentive. But the service was horrible. They only have 15-20 tables inside the restaurant (more in the patio) so I'm guess the kitchen and waiters wouldn't be overwhelmed. Three of us went and each ordered appetizers and a main course. For my daughter and I the appetizers came out and a couple of minutes after that my wife's main course arrived. About 30 minutes my wife's appetizer arrived. After about 20 minutes of my duaghter's and my appetizer arrived, my main course arrived. It took 45-60 minutes for my daughter's main course to arrive, and that was after asking the waiter twice on the status and asking a manager to stop by and see if he could find out what was going on with her main course. When we arrived, we ordered chips. They arrived about 75 minutes after we ordered tham and after our main courses were served. There was a complete lack of coordination bertween the waiters and the kitchen and the right hand didn't appear to know what the left hand was doing. I don't think they are ready for prime time to compete against all the other great restaurants in Houston. They should consider closing and reopening once they get the kitchen staff trained and working with the waiters is better coordinated. Very disappointing relative to all the hype.

Derek A.

Yelp
Had high hopes for this...they were not rewarded. Service was amateurish. Food was just mediocre. For the prices, I expect more.

Joel G.

Yelp
This is a pretty restaurant with a good but limited menu. The ceviche and lobster rolls were very good. The grilled lobster was excellent and reasonably priced. I was surprised that a dish we ordered was not what was served and confirmed with the waiter that it was not correct that it was not taken off the bill. We spent $300 on dinner, the $21 should have been removed.

Aria B.

Yelp
The ambiance & decor is nice. Our server was a little over zealous and after a full conversation about the menu and our orders he completely forgot to put our meal in and looked confused when he came over to ask us what we'd like to have and we told him we already told him. This delayed some items but we were gentle with him and didn't make a big fuss of it. We had the 2 cocktails, yellowtail crudo and shrimp ceviche - both with good flavor. I also got the lobster tacos which also were decent, not a show stopper. To make up for his forgetfulness, our server brought us a complimentary chocolate dessert. When he found out I didn't eat chocolate he slow me to pick something different and I got some sort of mango tarte which was pretty good. Overall I was hoping for a more extensive menu but the crudo and ceviche were solid as we are big ceviche fans. It wasn't enough of a draw to bring us back but glad we tried.

Yelp
Got a chance to try MF Lobster & Ceviche on St Patrick's Day. The restaurant was gorgeous and the ambience was wonderful. The staff were very helpful and really helped guide us with the menu. We ordered a few drinks and they were all 100% on point. The food though, nothing short of amazing!! You can tell how fresh the products were and that a lot of pride and effort went into the preparation. Would definitely recommend and can't wait to go back and try other items!

Yelp
Muy bien servicio, muy buena comida, el ambiente muy agradable, y todo el personal muy capacitado para el establecimiento

Yelp
Just opened. Beautiful restaurant. Lobster roll was fantastic. Can't wait to go back and try more things on the menu.

Yelp
Another fabulous restaurant by the MF group! Incredible decor, fabulous food and excellent service!

Yelp
Highly recommend! Beautiful interior. Knowledgeable and sweet servers. Food was great! We loved the clam chowder and MF special lobster roll!
