Yelp
We've been big fans of MF and Ume, and we were excited to try their new restaurant when we saw it pop up near us. We made a reservation and came in on a Thursday night the first week after they opened.
If you're familiar with MF, you know they know how to do ambiance. It's no different for their new restaurant MF Lobster & Ceviche. From the outside, the completely round restaurant resembles a futuristic yurt with floor to ceiling windows and a spacious patio area that overlooks Autry Park. The inside has a beautiful and modern aesthetic. From the polished stone floors to the brass toggle switches in the bathroom, there is a clear attention to detail. It's a great setting for a classy - but not stuffy - date night. After dinner you could grab a scoop of ice cream from Lick (once it opens) nearby and take a stroll around the park. One potential issue we found is that the restaurant could be a little loud. We're not sure if it's from the sound bouncing off the rounded walls or a lack of insulation, but it was a little hard for us to hear one another or the server without leaning in and raising our voices. This was with the restaurant half empty as well, so we would imagine it could be a lot louder if the restaurant was full.
Regarding parking, there are paid street parking spots around the park or the retail parking garage nearby which is $3 for 2 hours.
With new restaurants we usually expect a few hiccups as people are still finding their flow and being trained, but we felt the service here was great. A manager greeted us outside and opened the door for us as we entered, and they checked in on us midway through our meal. Our server was nice and attentive and our water was refilled like clockwork. We would've appreciated a rundown of the menu, but being as loud as it was, we were probably better off reading through it ourselves. When we asked for recommendations, our server suggested we try a cold dish (a Crudo, sashimi, or ceviche), and then a soup or salad and then an entree. We took their advice and ordered everything below which was a good amount shared between the two of us.
Onto the food. We ordered:
Tuna Crudo - 9/10.
Not much to say here. Tuna tasted fresh, well dressed. Wouldn't expect anything less from MF. Ask for chopsticks.
Lobster Bisque - 10/10
Our server warned us it was a 20 minute lead time for the lobster bisque. We weren't sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised when it came out with a large puff pastry topper. It was delicious. Usually with lobster bisques, I'm worried about it being too salty or too rich. This was neither. Very well balanced and big chunks of lobster inside.
Lobster Roll with Butter Chives - 9/10
Well seasoned lobster, perfectly cooked. The roll itself reminded us of Raising Cane's buttered toast but better.
Brown Butter Lobster Bao - 8/10
The baos themselves were very good. Light, fluffy, moist. Personal preference, we thought this dish was missing a little something. More brown butter? A sauce or aioli? Not quite sure. We liked the lobster roll a little bit more.
Lobster Mac and Cheese - 8/10
We probably could've done without this dish, but we're suckers for mac and cheese so we ordered this side as well. We would've liked it cheesier. We love cheese.
Overall we were happy with the food. You can tell the fresh lobster is the highlight of each lobster dish. This may be the reason they keep the sauce light on the baos and the cheese light in the mac and cheese. If you're craving lobster or looking for a place to have a nice dinner that isn't sushi, this place fits the bill. It's definitely unique and worth a try. Looking forward to coming back and trying their other dishes.
