Best Restaurants and Food Markets on Buford Highway, Atlanta - Eater Atlanta

"Located in the Amigo Plaza, this Nicaraguan restaurant opens in the morning for hearty breakfast plates filled with eggs, rice, beans, and fried plantains with sausages or skirt steak and hot cups of cafe con leche. But later in the day, regulars here swear by the salpicon (beef minced meat salad), vigoron (yuca topped with pork rinds and cabbage salad), and vaho or baho (beef, yuca, and plantains wrapped in banana leaves). Order one of the frescos to drink and dessert, including the bunuelos de yuca y queso (fried yuca and cheese doughnuts)." - Eater Staff

Lets dive in...The price: I noticed several reviews talking about the cost of the plates. I want to say that as a Nicaraguan in Atlanta coming from Miami, you definitely cannot expect to spend the $10-$15 per plate of "La Fritanga". This is a rare gem, and should be treated as such. Locally we only have 3 Nicaraguan restaurants, and this is as close to Managua you will get. If you have sent packages from Atlanta to managua or vice versa you would know transportation and import cost is high, the Picos are authentic, rosquillas galore, and Milca, cant forget the Milca...Let's dive into the food. Not sure if its because flavors very per regions in my country, but as a Managuan born, the food held up to that of my home city. DELICIOUS, portions are perfect, and the cacao was large (about 20oz) with great flavor. The Vibe: many stated that the music was loud, I would say walking in I felt i stepped into a restaurant in Nicaragua itself... So ora dinamita played in the background, bringing beautiful memories of my visits to my hometown. The waiter was superb, Aida was courteous, a sense of "La tia chilo. If you are Nicaraguan you will understand my statement. I had zero complaints 👌 and Hope the restaurants continues to grow and spread our culture.

Honestly had a great experience on my visit. Service was great and the place was clean with nice tables that have pictures plastered all over of Nicaragua. I had the Salpicon and honestly fell in love with everything on my plate. I picked at my friend's plate as well and all had great flavor. I went on a slower day but I know on weekends they have live music so will definitely come back and check them out again then.

Tried their grilled chicken with a side of queso frito and their carne asada. The chicken was amazing. The carne asada was a bit dry for my taste but seasoned well nonetheless. The music was a bit too loud, making it impossible to have a conversation with the person sitting next to me. Service was good. Will definitely go back when visiting this side of town.

For a Nicaraguan person, is really difficult to find a decent place to eat Nicaraguan food in Atlanta but this place is great. They have many different Nicaraguan food and candies, beers and even souvenirs. I recommend to visit in the weekdays because in the weekends the food is different idk why.

This was a bit of a drive for my cousin and I but we enjoyed the food. There was nothing left to take back( we ate it all). We were craving Hispanic food and all the places close by were closed but we decided to give this place a try. The ladies(servers) are so pleasant and even gave me samples of their mixed juices. I had the carne asada w gallo pinto, sweet plantains, fried cheese and shredded cabbage. I tried their arroz con pina and chicha( native juices)...both good but I preferred the arroz con pina. I wanted dessert but I barely walked out of there. I was so full and satisfied. Thank you.

Ordered the carne asada with gallo pinto, tajadas, fried cheese, and ensalada de repollo for takeout the other day. Not sure if they give away their bad food to those who get takeout, but it was really disappointing. The tajadas were extremely thin and oily. The carne asada was overcooked, dried out. It seemed like it had been sitting out for a while. The gallo pinto lacked flavor and the rice:bean ratio was off. They also don't give you as much gallo pinto as you would get from a fritanga in Miami - and they charge more. It was about $16 for the meal and typically fritanga costs $12-$14. The ensalada de repollo also lacked flavor but felt like it was good quality. The only thing that was good was the fried cheese. The ladies working were very nice and welcoming, but the food is not good - at least for takeout. I'm sure dining in is probably better. Personally would not eat here again.

The food presentation and customer service were ok. The food wasn’t all that great. The meat has a bland taste. I mean for being a traditional Nicaraguan restaurant, the food taste wasn’t all there. Also the food was pricey. Two plates, drinks costs more than dining at a steak house. They need to either lower their prices or improve the taste.

The atmosphere is like a night club. The music was so loud you can’t hear the waitress or each other, we left with a headache. It’s dark with disco lights flashing. The food was ok and they add 18% tip to the bill. We won’t go back.

Yelp
The first time I ever had Nicaraguan food was when I lived in Miami. They have tons of Nica places in Miami called Fritanga's. Anyone from Miami knows these places and knows that the food is amazing there. Is this place as good as a Fritanga? Almost. Not quite 100% but DEFINITELY the closest you'll get in Atlanta to real Nicaraguan food. Service was good but I went for lunch on a Friday and wasn't packed at all. There is alot of authentic Nica decorations and clothing on the walls. Very quaint little restaurant with a nice bar. Now the most important part. The food. I got the Carne Asada. It was good. They use a bit more garlic than most places in Miami but still good. I should have asked for mine a little more towards medium as mine was well but it was tender and not rubbery. The queso frito...ON POINT. Just like the Fritangas in Miami. The gallopinto is good but you need to make sure you ask for the picante. It's signature in those Nica places and it makes the gallopinto almost exactly like Miami. Tajadas (Marequitas almost anywhere else) are good. Crispy and salted well. The ensalada was the only let down. The Fritangas in Miami soak the repollo in their picante and give it to you in a little bag. Makes it more of a pickled salad and it is SO GOOD. They don't do that here so the repollo is average. All in all very good food. Was going to give it 4 stars but that is because I'm comparing it to Miami but the truth is for Atlanta, it's a 5. It's VERY close what you'd get in Miami which has amazing Nica food. I'll definitely go back.

Yelp
Was in the Atlanta area for a bit so I was happy to find a Nicaraguan spot, which is scarce in NJ! The food was pretty good. However, it's always a hit or miss when it comes to reviewing your own culture's food because no one ever comes close to mom & abueli's cooking! My tastebuds were happy that the food came very close to that though. The staff was very friendly and the ambiance was festive. Good vibes all around. If I'm in the area again, I will certainly check them out again for some good old home Nica cooking!

Yelp
It's so rare to come across a 100% Nicaragüense restaurant! Came here for breakfast about 10am on a Saturday and there was plenty of parking and several groups enjoying themselves. No wait. Plenty of tables. Our server was lovely and spoke some English. The menu is in both Spanish and English. I ordered the Managua breakfast which was so much food and so delicious! Of course they had cacao agua fresca- Omg so good. They also have a bar and several TVs, some Nicaraguan pantry items and artesanal products to purchase. The store is clean and they have restrooms. They do live music in the evenings so I will definitely be back for that.

Yelp
This is a Nicaraguan restaurant.. i saw it just driving by, and since I have been to Managa, and there is maybe just one other Nicaraguan restaurant in Georgia I stopped to eat. The waitress reccomended the Carbe Asada so I went with that. It was pretty good. Came with thin dried plantain strips, and fresh fried plantain which is a lot better than dried strips. They add a 15% tip. Food came real fast even with other diners

Yelp
La comida no es muy buena. Música bien alta. Mucha gente llega a consumir licor. Food is not good. Music playing is loud, basically is a drinking environment

Yelp
Phenomenal Catering Experience at Mi Linda Managua for Quinceañera Party! The restaurant Mi Linda Managua catered my daughter's quinceañera party this past weekend. The food was amazing! They served carne asada, carne desmenuzada and pollo desmenuzada with gallo pinto, white rice, tajadas, platano maduros, queso frito, tortillas and salad. Everyone loved the food, we are still getting compliments on it. The ladies who stayed to help serve and cleanup were very nice and so helpful. We definitely recommend them and would give them more than 5 stars if we could!
