8 great bars and restaurants for Mexican cocktails in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"The art of the michelada is growing ever more extravagant (as it should be) and at Mi Lindo San Blas — Southwest Detroit’s Nayarit-style eatery — the michelada gets a beachy treatment. Try the Barbie, served in a large goblet and made with a spicy tomato base and served with two bottles of Cerveza Victoria poured inside, along with a ceviche topper, lime wedges, and shrimp lining the rim. For groups, go for the seis al hilo, basically a six-pack of Modelos in cans that are topped with cucumber and shrimp, along with ceviche — all served on a platter." - Serena Maria Daniels

I was in from out-of-town and had to stop back in for dinner! I always have a really good experience at Mi Lindo San Blas every time I visit. The food is delicious and the service is friendly. Camilo, the manager made sure we were well taken care of. I had the Santa Fe sushi and my friend had the sushi balls. Ended our meals with their amazing friend ice cream! Can’t wait to visit again soon!

Google
Food is awesome! Great taste, great choices. Drinks are even better! Live music is awesome! The restaurant has an underwater theme it's cute!. Wish the staff spoke more English, heck they probably wish I spoke more Spanish. It gets a bit crowded so they can forget small things, but overall it's great. It looks like a car wash outside so if you don't know where your going you'd miss it! And always make a right when leaving! This is a one-way street and you can't see the sign at night. This is just an update! Like I said before everything was great and today it wasn't so busy! I had the best service!! The Paloma here is the best in Detroit i promise!! I'll be back again and again!

Google
Fabulous dinner, all five of us said it might be the best Mexican food we have ever had. Staff was friendly and the environment was great. Great job, Congratulations

Google
Very cool atmosphere! They had a live mariachi band playing. It was slow so they played a tune for each table. The service was attentive and quick. The food was good, it’s spicy. I recommend the empanadas on the appetizer menu. It’s a cute place to stop in for a bite.

Google
The exterior couldn't be more different than the interior. It is super colorful, clean, friendly and fun. Another one of Mexican Town's seafood restaurants to give you a nice variety reminding us there's a lot more to Mexican food than burritos and tacos.

Google
The food was delicious, the waitress Andrea made the environment more friendly and lovely. Would recommend this place to everyone

Donna Jones

Google
The waitress didn't speak English very well, but with the Google English to Spanish app communication was never an issue! Food was muy delicioso! And I left full with leftovers for another whole meal for both my husband and myself! I would recommend this place to anyone who wants that authentic Mexican Seafood experience! This is the type of place that Andrew Zimmerman should review for real!!!!

From looking at the outside of the building and not being from this area, I would have never expected what I was greeted with once. I walked in was amazing. The atmosphere was amazing as well as the food I was pleasantly surprised.

Yelp
First off all the food we got was great. I believe there was a little too much cheese on the oysters for my taste. But when I scraped some of it off the taste was good. The shrimp Alfredo was great. The shrimp were cooked just right and the sauce was really good. The fish was great. Cooked correctly and it was great with tortillas. The ceviche on the table made mor a great little appetizer. The service however wasn't great. We had to track down our waitress for the bill and she didn't come to check on us at all. We went during lunch so there weren't many people in the restaurant for her to claim she was too busy. If it wasn't for the bad service I would have definitely given more stars to the restaurant. Like I said the good quality was very good. The portions were a great size. I wouldn't mind giving the place another shot the service being bad didn't ruin it completely for me.

Yelp
The service and food were ok. The decor was a bit much. Personally I would not return for a follow up visit.

Yelp
Came to Mi Lindo San Blas on a Friday evening, as we were looking for good Mexican seafood for lent. When you walk in, you're met with colorful decor throughout the large restaurant. Each table is hand carved and painted with sealife cartoons (lobster, shark, dolphin, etc). You feel like you're somewhere tropical, right in the city. We were immediately seated at a table and a waitress brought over complimentary ceviche and chips. We started with guacamole and camrones (shrimp) empanadas. The guacamole was freshly made and bursting with flavor. The empanadas were on the greasier side and would've been better if they were baked - but still tasty. We then shared Camrones a La mexicana, which is shrimp in a spicy Mexican sauce - served with rice, potato like salad and a side salad. The shrimp was cooked perfectly as was the rice, however, it was far from spicy. Overall, the service was great and food was good. Definitely worth trying and will be back to try other options on the menu.

Yelp
El servicio se meresio 4.5 estrellas pero la presentasion de este platillo 2.5. El molcajete esta muy vacio , en otros lugares te dan 3 cebollitas on 2 chiles porlomenos asi se llena mas . Necesitan mejorar

Yelp
I am completely unfamiliar with the Detroit food scene, but recently some friends were visiting and after they did a random google search, we landed on Mi Lindo Sans Blas. The waitstaff, atmosphere, live music, and food all provided a memorable experience, and THANKFULLY I am into seafood because that's pretty much all they serve. And... it's really good! The drinks are huge, the live music is hilariously wonderful and everyone seems to be there to have a good time. There were seemingly countless couples and families out for date night, and smiles were to be had everywhere. I'm not sure I would love the restaurant when packed and rowdy, but we lucked out perfectly on a weeknight with a small crowd and super attentive service.

Yelp
My niece found this restaurant online. We never heard of a Mexican restaurant that specialized in seafood. It was the unusual for us to be served ceviche and chips instead of chips and salsa. The chips were served hot and the ceviche was good. We ordered a variety of alcoholic beverages. I ordered the vampiro and sent it back because it didn't taste as described. I sent it back and asked for a sangria to only receive the same drink in another glass with cut up fruit. Our waitress was attentive and kept up with the requests from our party of 12. There was a Spanish singer entertaining us as we ate. The restaurant was pretty full and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves. The lights were dim but it wasn't too dark. There is limited parking in a lot but street parking is available. I will probably go again if someone who hasn't been wanted to go but I wouldn't return on my own. It was an experience.

Yelp
The food was ok but the service was terrible it took literally 20 minutes for the waitress to come to our table to greet us and it wasn't even busy. The majority of the staff there was very rude and unprofessional the total experience there was not great the food was Good but the service was a huge disappointment.

Shawndrica S.

Yelp
I ordered a platter to share to go, the Molcajete de Mariscos. So disappointed, only 2 prawns, about 4 smaller shrimp, 1 crab leg, and pieces of other seafood cut small. Paid $34 dollars and they kept my change without asking. I won't be back, as I think they didn't want my business anyway. Lesson learned. BTW I'm the lady who paid with $2 bills.
google avatar

Yelp
A friend introduced me to this hole in the wall last night and I was not disappointed! The shrimp ceviche was really tasty and it's complimentary! I thought the guacamole and the shrimp fajitas were really good and my friend enjoyed his margarita and his seafood based caldo (soup). I'd say the service is ok and they don't speak much English, but that's not a problem for me.
google avatar

Yelp
Terrific SW Detroit seafood restaurant! I thoroughly enjoyed the oysters on half shell topped with shrimp/octopus with plenty of limes on side, seafood soup and a paella. It all reminded so much of dining experiences I've enjoyed in coastal Mexico. Festive interior. I was very surprised once inside the door. There is no curb appeal and then you walk in ...... Wow. Big lunch in a quiet room. I'll be back for more.

Yelp
Second time here. Little hidden gem in a shitty area of Detroit, but my gosh, the fooooooooooooooooood! *drool* They mainly speak Spanish here, when you start to speak English they will transition but its broken. There is usually a mariachi singer or DJ here which is also cool. To start - they serve you with shrimp ceviche and a hot green salsa with tortilla chips and crackers. Can't find this anywhere! Tableside guac is a must. The first time I was there, my sister ordered the meal in the pineapple, delicious. Other sister ordered oysters with a crab and shrimp ceviche on top. Delicious. Both times I ordered a warm cooked seafood dish with mussels, shrimp, prawns, scallops, octopus in a spicy red sauce and it is out of this world. I will not get anything else!!! See pictures!

Yelp
Waited for over 6 minutes in the lobby even after ringing the bell. It was so noticeable a customer got up to say we were waiting. The sad part was the place was less than half full with mabyee 7 cars in the parking lot including ours. Even after that nice customer tried to help and nothing... we left. With covid and. Staffing I would more than understand if they were slammed but they weren't even close to that. on top of our last experience here and the high cost I doubt trying again.

Yelp
I've been stalking this place for a month now. They're finally open! Definitely worth the wait. They serve Mexican seafood prepared "estilo Nayarit" which is a style specific to a coastal state in Mexico. They have tons of seafood options! It was difficult to decide on a dish, but once we finally did my friend and I both enjoyed our meals. They have super friendly and attentive service. So their parking lot is a little snug, you may need to use street parking on Livernois. Bonus points for having a parking lot attendant and "under the sea" theme decor.

Yelp
My 2nd visit just had to get Molcajete de Carnes again such a unique flavor explosion, yeh I shared this time. The hot steaming bowl filled with Steak, Chicken , Shrimps, Chorizo, Cactus, Cheese n drenched in Mole type sauce, oh yeah peppers n onions too comes with Tortilla, Rice n Beans. Meals start with a bowl of Cheviche a blend of chopped Seafood, Also a very great Steak Fajitas. Place be like a museum decorated in southern Mexico Seaport style. Hot news another location opening in the Barrio of Lincoln Park early next year. #mariscosmilindosanblas #milindosanblas #eatswdetroit #swdetroit #molcajetedecarnes #steakfajitas #cheviche

Yelp
Waited 15 minutes to get seated and I had to ring the bell at the front desk multiple times. Slow staff and the food is only good half the time. Need to step up your service and quality if you guys are serious about opening up another restaurant in LP. Because this isn't the first time that it's happened.

Yelp
10/10. Might be the best place I've eaten at in a long time. Definitely the best Mexican place around if you like seafood. I hardly ever write reviews but they deserve it here. The drinks were huge and amazing and the seafood platter was fresh, spicy, and delicious. The staff was quick and friendly and there was even live music!

Julie P.

Yelp
First of all I want to say that the server was great. she really tried to make it up to us. Unfortunately I have to write this review because I couldn't live with myself if I didn't. Good: The decor is nice and bright. The restaurant was about 30% full. Both times I've been there it hasn't been very busy. Bad: I really don't know how to say this but just come out and say it. Well as I sat there eating tortilla chips waiting for my food to come out of the kitchen, a live cockroach approached me on the table, I was very disgusted. I understand that when there's one cockroach there's probably another million because they multiply so quickly. I just don't believe there's any room for cockroaches at a restaurant and think more should be done by the restaurant to prevent this. I was really upset and disappointed I had driven 30 minutes just to enjoy a nice Mexican fried fish. There were other things that went wrong but that was the worst part and the other stuff really wasn't anything by comparison. Needless to say I will never return. So sad.
google avatar

Artha N.

Yelp
The reason I gave it three stars is that there is unnecessary loud noise. Live music is loud, but still okay. But there is something they played that is really loud and bothering me. I don't know what's the name. Food is great. Really big portion, and satisfying. For seafood lovers, this is a place to get fresh seafood. Soup is great with diced tomatoes and cucumbers. But it needs to be more hot (temperature).

Yelp
Paying for something you don't like! This is the right place for that. I ordered the Pina Rellena which was (super sweet) the menu does not mention anywhere that this plate it's sweet. Waitress comes after bringing out our food and asks "how's everything"? I told her I didn't like my food. So I ordered something else. After a few minutes she came back and told me that "the cooks said everything was fine with my entree I ordered" and I had to pay for it. She offered me a box. what would make you think that the same food I didn't like in your restaurant, later on at home I'm changing my mind?. Please let your cooks know that I didn't say that something was wrong with the food they cooked. I simply didn't like it. When I don't like something I simply don't come back. Service- was very slow.! How many table in the whole restaurant 3.

Yelp
Nasty rotten seafood & frozen imitation crab meat! That's just part of what we left behind and still paid our bill in full! Management didn't want to do anything about it. Will not come here again!

Tracy T.

Yelp
Grilled shrimp with hot sauce was delicious!! Chips, beans and rice are all flavorful and good portions!
google avatar

Claudia G.

Yelp
A very tradicional restaurant with excellent service!!!! The taste of the food is very authentic in the real San Blass. I recommend it.

Betty B.

Yelp
First and last time in this place, the place has nice decoration, but the food is very bad. We ordered a "filete de pescado zarandeado" and it tasted like cumin a lot and the potato salad had no flavor
google avatar

S T.

Yelp
Not the best food... ... which is a shame because I had high expectations... got the chicken nachos which I felt would not be problem at a mexican restaurant... they were dry... very little chicken to be found ... however they look appetizing just fail to deliver #sorry

Rachel C.

Yelp
My daughter ordered a plater last Friday. When she called I guess it was almost time for them to close. The ladies that answered kept giving each other the phone. They didn't know what platter she was asking for. Then acted like they didn't understand her. So she finally gets the order she wanted. We go pick it up. We live 5 mins from there. When we get home it's cold and looked as if it was put together with left overs. It was an 80 dollar platter. If that was the case they should have told her there getting ready to close. Fries were cold fish and shrimp and rice cold and soggy . My first and last time trying them. So disappointed
google avatar

Chofiriffis M.

Yelp
The food is really good but they play the music extremely loud, you can't even have a conversation with the person next to you.
google avatar

Ala M.

Yelp
Been here twice firt time they messed my order up and made me pay for it along with the right order. Second time they forgot to put in my daughters food we were eating and by the time we were almost done I asked for her food the waitress forgot to put the order in! Michelada(beer with clamato) was nasty.
google avatar

Yelp
Very seafood heavy menu. Almost all the entrees had seafood. Pros: free tostadas which went well with the 3 different dipping sauces, big portions, the magrita was massive and super tasty (only $5, not sure there was that much alcohol but oh the mango was worth it). My grilled shrimp was good but nothing to rave about but did satisfy my stomach. Cons: their mexican style ceviche was too much, too fishy and oysters were poor quality IMO I was alittle disappointed at the food but with their huge menu, I would def go back and try something else. If nothing else, at least get 2 magritas this time.

Fernando C.

Yelp
If I could give this place zero stars I would. This is the worst restaurant I've ever been to. I ordered the shrimp hamburger and I laughed when I saw how pathetic it was. I could've made them at home and it would've turned out better & cheaper than this place. Don't go here, it's a waste of money, I can see why they're struggling.
google avatar

Adela S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, lots of tvs and nice decor gave me a good impression of the restaurant. I ordered Camarones Coras, a slightly spicy whole shrimp dish. The sauce was very tasty and enjoyable, but the shrimp were hard and dried out, almost as if they were prepared far in advance and then reheated with the sauce. I would say it was an isolated incident, however the garlic octopus my dining partner ordered were also hard and dried out in the same fashion. Overall, I was not pleased with the execution of the food, although I may be back just to have drinks and watch a soccer game or something.

Yelp
Good service. Great food. The owner was walking around the dining room the whole time. Table side guacamole was incredible. Oysters appetizer was a bit much. We had 6 plain and 6 preparados. Maybe the oyster are out of season. My wife had the deep-fried snapper. It was quite tasty with a crunchy skin. I had the Charola Levantamuertos. Omg! I was in heaven. What a variety of tastes! Crabs were done perfectly. Shrimp, langostinos, mussels and octopus in a red sauce. It was splendid. Any hotter would have been painful. Perfect. Service was as prompt as we wanted. Being out with my wife, we really didn't want to be doted on. She was prompt and cared for our comfort. Good. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that they don't have iced tea. Really? Mexican food without iced tea? Specifically iced tea with lime. We both look forward to eating here again.
google avatar

Jose V.

Yelp
The food was really bad I could never get my food to be good not to to mention they didn't put a lot in the bowl. It looked half empty. Definitely not recommend this place. Service was good those and the tables were clean so give them that.
google avatar

Angie L.

Yelp
Fantastic food with a spice level not for the faint of heart! Generous portions of high quality seafood. They do have some non-fish options for the non-seafood eaters. Brush up on your Spanish skills, you may need them to order. We can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Jers J.

Yelp
It was really good. The fish and the soup were yummylicious. They don't have any extra given to you unlike some Mexican restaurants where they have unlimited chips and dip. Soda is no refill. One more thing, you really have to speak Spanish to make an order. I don't know if the waiter was trying to be cute to make it "authentic". But it's alright we went to try it and the food was delicious. Parking lot is gated and it appears to be safe.
google avatar

Mariam S.

Yelp
Dirty , cheap and while we tried to eat in peace there was flies literally flying over you and the food and the temperature was cold inside they was trying to save gas i guess ...
google avatar

Akeia B.

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing, they have great service, fresh seafood, great mixed drinks,I love the complementary ceviche they bring you before the meal, also great music.I am always pleased with every meal I get from this restaurant.
google avatar

Jailene S.

Yelp
Finally a mexican style seafood restaurant in michigan! And it's delicious. The wait was long but I am happy to see them doing good. As soon as we were seated the staff was very attentive, we had our drink order taken and received our complimentary ceviche within 2 minutes.
google avatar

Sal Q.

Yelp
If you like loud annoying music and frozen sea food this is your place. Food was decent at best. Don't know if I ordered the wrong thing or what. What I do know is that j won't be here again.
google avatar

Lakenya S.

Yelp
Just stay away!!! I took my girlfriend for her bday and we had a horrible time. The waitress couldn't suggest anything, because she knew nothing!!! She wasn't trained at all!!!! She kept going in the kitchen to get answers she should've known. I asked for a Sangria I was given a bottle that said non-alcoholic when I went up to the bartender to ask for the alcoholic version she said she couldn't make it ‍smh. After all that the food came out and it was sooooo bland with an odd presentation. Let me reiterate stay away!!!

Yelp
Fantastic food and great service. This place recently opened. The decor is fun and festive. Plenty of safe parking. If you love Mexican food and seafood this place is for you.

Yelp
I have been to this restaurant numerous times.. He venido varias veces a este restaurante. But tonight was by far the worst , experience I have ever experienced at this restaurant. Pero esta noche fue la más peor experiencia que he tenido en este restaurante. I ordered two drinks, waited 45 minutes, and no one came to my table. Ordené dos bebidas y espere 45 minutos y nadie llego a mi mesa. I asked the waitress what was taking so long ,and was giving the most nastiest look I've ever seen in my life. Le pregunté a la mesera que por que se demoraban tanto y ella me dio una mirada que nunca en mi vida yo e visto. I asked to be cashed out so I walk towards the exit. Le pregunte por mi cuenta y me fui hacia la salida. As I was cashing out at the register the other waitress came with the food ,and said "here's your food it's ready" . Y mientras estaba yo pagando mi cuenta la otra mesera llegó y dijo aquí está ..aquí está su comida. The only thing I want to say is if, I was going to order my food for carry it out , I would've ordered it for take-out . I would not have sat there for 45 minutes , for you to walk to the door and offered me some food that I had already said I was not going to want due to your poor services.. (Servicios pobres) I still left a five dollar tip on a seven dollar order just because I used to be a waitress. The services in the restaurant have always been very slow, it seems like the waitresses are,! turtles I could understand when the restaurant is extremely busy, yet tonight I happen to be the only table.. I will say I worked very hard for my money, and I worked very hard to please people this place has a bunch of lazy individuals, and just an FYI the security guards should be working not in the building entertaining your waitresses, your waitresses should be entertaining your customers whom, pay to have your business running..

Yelp
Latin American mariscos (seafood) joint--very festive atmosphere; typically home to big family and after work pachangas with cocktail for drinking (micheladas, kinda like bloody Mary's but with beer) and eating: about half the menu consists of cocteles of shrimp, octopus--like shrimp cocktail in flavor, but soupier and with onions, peppers, and a more tomato less horseradish flavor. Many other shrimp dishes--variations on skewers and sautés, and fish, mostly whole and either fried or sautéed. These places remind me of what Red Lobster used to be when I was a kid, but aimed at the Latino market: a special night out for the whole family, or after work, but not too expensive or sophisticated. The Mojarra Frita (whole fried Tilapia) was cooked as I would expect, the salsa very tasty. My friend's Filete de Ajo (fish in garlic sauce) also satisfied. The rice was also flavorfully executed. Previous reviews note lackadaisical service, and it's true no one snapped to attention upon my entry or asked if we wanted our check, but this reflects the casual, TGIF atmosphere, and cultural differences: it's rude to rush people enjoying a party. Not the place to go if your seeking varied and optimal seafood preparation, but everything is as it should be. I'll be back. Likely when a good soccer game is on TV.

Yelp
Second time to San Blas... Not that impressed. Food here is mediocre. They have really interesting drinks on their menu, I don't really drink, but they do look good. I personally didn't like the food either time I visited. The other people in our party did however like theirs. Just personal preference I guess. As for service, bad the same waitress both times. I believe her name is Juana. First, she never smiled, she stands at the front of our long table with music playing in background to get everyone orders. Instead of going to each individual. I don't like to have to yell to place my order. There were four dinners ordered, she brought 1 order of tortillas. 4 total. Really? We each ate our one microwaved tortilla, then waited about 10 min for her to come back we ordered 2 more orders. (Please don't microwave my tortillas) After that she never came back. No drink refills, no do we need anything else. Nothing. I would recommend if you like seafood, to try it. Just hope to get one of the other waitresses. Sorry San Blas 2x not enjoyed, get a better server.

David R.

Yelp
OMG!!!! Don't come on a Saturday cause you will go DEAF!!!!! The music hits over 100 decibels....85 causes permanent hearing damage if exposed for long periods of time or on a regular basis. It's annoying and you can't enjoy your company, much less hear your waitress and I know I will not enjoy my food with the loud music. Not sure about the food....but it's not sitting well with me so far. Family wanted to try it so we'll see how it goes. Well it's after dinner and meh, nothing special at least to me. I've had better at family gathering when they make agua chile and cóctel de mariscos. I guess if you want something different you'll like it but I've gone there, ate and I'm good. Sorry but I won't be going back.

Ben W.

Yelp
I had high expectations for this place from the reviews online. But when I got there it all went down the drain. To begin with the menu is the same few items presented in different ways and it WAS EXTREMELY OVERPRICED$$$$$$!!! Next my server didn't know the menu at all and it was obvious she didn't like half of the things I asked her. But when my food came out, which was extremely quick, it was hot..... That's mostly it the food was mediocre at best and isn't a real Mexican seafood experience. But I do give them credit for the fast and hot food and the free ceviche and tostadas. I don't know if I'll be back.

Juan O.

Yelp
Won't be back. Had high expectations but was let down. Floor was filthy walking in. Was out of all beef. Ordered chicken fajitas and only came with dry chicken and mostly green peppers that's it. Ordered oysters waited a half a hour asked about it and was told they were out. Then my son got his meal which was supposed to have oysters in it and they wasn't even going to say it was missing. Waited 20 minutes for my drink. Waitress never came back to check on us until after we finished our food. My daughter wanted another pop and we didn't see her anywhere and couldn't get the attention of any other waitress. Our bill was extremely high for the service and quality. Won't be back.
google avatar

Juan R.

Yelp
Ehh, parking lot set up is horrible, the wait to get a table is minor, but once at a table it's over 30mins to get your food, & like us what we ordered was "all out" 30 mins after we turned in our order. Horrible first impression. Was excited to try this place, don't think I'll try it again

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! Great atmosphere, food and people. Very clean. Food (seafood) was very fresh. Portions were abundant. Service was excellent. The over all experience was A1!!

Never again. Tried twice. Food is way over-priced and seems thrown together. I ordered Pina Rellenos - seafood in a sauce, came in a half-pineapple and there was NO fresh pineapple at all. The calamari in it tasted like cardboard, and overall the dish was not edible. Only good thing was the guacamole - which was very good.
