A friend and I dined at Mi Piace last night for the third time and all I can say is, WOW!! If I could give this place a 10-star rating or more, I definitely would! If this place was in my neighborhood (I drove from Long Beach and my friend from Northridge), I would be here EVERY.SINGLE.WEEK. It is THAT good!! Let me explain: I am a "Foodie" and fairly picky. No sub-standard eateries as we only have so many meals in a day! This place does NOT disappoint! Every single dish we ordered was top-notch and incredibly delicious!
When we arrived, we were greeted warmly by the very professional and well-spoken Victoria. She was beautifully dressed in black and her makeup and hair were on point. She had our reservation and immediately escorted us to our table, a modern, somewhat mid-century modern white booth in the back on the side of the Dining Room. [FYI, in reviewing information about this special place, I was excited to see that Toni Chi, a New York-based designer had created this trendy, upbeat environment.] We were told that José would be our waiter and were left with the regular menu, the "Dine LA" menu and the Cocktail Menu.
WIthin moments of our being seated, José arrived to warmly greet us and take our drink orders. We wanted to stick with water for the moment and that was delivered less than 2 minutes from our request.
We were given time to look over the menus and José checked back in a few more minutes to see if he could answer any questions for us.
We seriously had a difficult time narrowing down what we wanted to eat because of the incredible selection of dishes!
We couldn't decide on which appetizers to begin with, so we asked José which would be best for us: the Panino Alla Caprese (Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella with sliced tomatoes and Olive Oil -OR- the Grilled Vegetables with Mushrooms, Red and Yellow Bell Peppers, Onions, 2 kinds of Mushrooms and Zucchini Squash. Much to our surprise, José said they were both great but that the vegetables were his favorite! We got both because why not?! And, both were extremely delicious; however, whatever the chef did to the vegetables made me fall in love with them, whoever they were, lol!! The Caprese Salad was also killer, so we won doubly on our starters! We also ordered a side of bread with the iconic oil and balsamic vinegar which was also delicioso!!
Once our dishes were cleared from our starters, our main courses arrived within a short time. I ordered the Pollo Al Prezzemolo, a free-range organic grilled half Chicken stuffed with fresh herbs, plenty of garlic (!!), parsley lemon butter sauce, served with Pomme Purée and sauteed vegetables. It was BEAUTIFULLY presented, which was the case with every dish, by the way! It was utter HEAVEN in the taste department, as well, and I was delighted that I could take some home as a leftover for the next day!
My guest ordered the Pescatore, a rustic seafood stew with calamari, shrimp, scallops, clams, prawns, Prince Edward Island spinach tagliatelle in a flavorful San Marzano tomato-infused broth and she was completely DELIGHTED in her choice, as well!
I have to make mention here of the Owner, Drew, who checked in on us which was lovely since owners are not often at such restaurants, let alone on the floor, interacting with customers.
The Manager and General Manager were ever-present on the floor, warmly and attentively interacting with tables of customers and supporting their staff! We felt that this restaurant "ship" was definitely "all hands on deck" and each staffer supported the whole. It definitely has a New York feel to it which is a rarity in California! On top of that, Mi Piace is in Pasadena, one of my very favorite cities!
With dinner, my guest had the Austin Hope cabernet wine which was suggested would pair well with her Pescatore as well as a Margarita specialty drink that had a grand Marnier foam and clarified tequila in it as well as a nice spice around the rim. While it smelled heavenly to me but since I don't drink, that's as far as I went with it, lol, but my guest was VERY pleased!
Though we had quite a dinner, we could not leave without dessert! Once again, José was there with suggestions for me. My guest had tiramasu which she absolutely loved but I wanted something chocolate. José recommended the Midnight Fantasy which was once again, beautiful to look at and AMAZING!!
My guest and I had such a WONDERFUL experience at Mi Piace and we will be coming back here again and again and again and...well, you get the picture! It's absolutely AWESOME and the prices are completely reasonable, especially for the quality that you get, so we will be back lots! [My only regret is not taking more photos!]
This place's name, "Mi Piace" translates literally to "I like it!" In that case, maybe it should be named, "Lo Adoro"--I love it, lol!
Thank you, thank you, Mi Piace for a great time last night!
Chef's Kiss and DELICIOSO!
