The 15 Best Tex-Mex Restaurants in Houston

"Not much has changed about Mi Sombrero since it opened in 1978, and we’re kind of into that. The rough-around-the-edges interior is part of the charm, as are the rock-bottom prices. You’ll find all the classic Tex-Mex standards here: actually spicy salsa, multiple dishes covered in hot queso, employees who know every regular diner’s order by heart, and an endlessly convertible dining room in case you roll up with more than 10 people. Go to Mi Sombrero if you’re looking for classic, quick and dirty, Houston Tex-Mex, especially if you live around the Garden Oaks area." - gianni greene, chelsea thomas

Mi Sombrero Review - Garden Oaks - Houston - The Infatuation

"Mi Sombrero represents a Houston neighborhood standard: the strip center restaurant. A dime a dozen across the Houston suburbs, a place like Mi Sombrero is generally patronized only by folks who live nearby, who have likely been eating there for years, and have a regular order the employees know by heart. It’s convenient, tasty, and filled with various foods smothered in hot cheese and actually spicy salsa. Not much appears to have changed about Mi Sombrero since it opened in 1978, and we’re kind of into that. The rough-around-the-edges interior is part of the charm, as are the rock-bottom prices. Go here if you’re looking for classic, quick and dirty, Houston Tex-Mex. " - Chelsea Thomas

This is a place I grew up eating in the 90's. Now, when I travel in from New York, once a year, I always want a taste of home. The atmosphere is a generational family vibe. Food is wonderful as usual.

Located in the heights since 1978 is Mi Sombrero. This spot is like 2 mins from my spot and it drew my eye. In a land of Salatas and Cavas, an old school joint in a shopping center with pot holes makes you go 👀👀👀. Parking isn’t that bad here lol just make sure your suspension is solid. We walk in and we sit down. A little Hispanic girl comes and takes our drink order (def doesn’t speak English) and then our server comes. I should’ve known when they don’t do single tacos, green salsa, and only have that Tex Mex red piss water salsa they give to white people that something was wrong. Fajita and Eggs 5/10 - the meat might as well have been jerky. Rubber. The potatoes eggs and beans were alright. Tortillas too. That meat is almost inedible. I’d say it might be salvageable with salsa but again. They only do the red soup water. My god. I don’t know how this place will be open for 40 years. Do yourself a favor and do your part to make sure it doesn’t by not going. Follow me on IG Eats_By_Puig

Google
A hidden gem of a Tex-Mex restaurant. Delicious food, low prices, and the waitstaff are golden. It's definitely a hole in the wall, but definitely worth visiting. Laid back atmosphere and cheap food and beer. My first visit is definitely not my last. My highest recommendation, BRAVO!!!

Google
Our favorite place for Menudo. (We love the chips & queso too!)

Google
Everything was bad reviews must be paid for plus manager was rude and wouldn't return the burnt eggs tacos she said u have to pay we told her to redo them she said no

I used to visit this restaurant very frequently about 6 years ago but moved a ways out from it bit happened to be in the area so decided to stop but turned out to be a whole different experience from what I remember...the rice was very dry with little to no taste, beans tasted days old, the enchiladas which was my go to when I did go and now would never come back...the enchiladas are now made with cheap block cheese which started getting hard the little time it sat...the prices for the quality of the food is insane...this plate was 14.00...the tacos are almost $5.00 for ONE!....for ONE!...sorry but I will not be coming back to this eat

Yelp
I'm 4th generation texican. This is my fave neighborhood restaurant for authentic homemade food like my mom used to cook. Good breakfast lunch or dinner. Service is always fast and friendly. It's the type of place the waitress knows your name. and food is always fresh - never cold. The salsa is the best! A little hole in the wall if you blink you miss it. They were closed for a while for renovation but they've been around forever so it was time. We couldn't wait for them to open up.

Yelp
I'd definitely categorize this place as more of a Tex-Mex restaurant than an authentic Mexican spot, though I've seen some reviews that say otherwise. When we stopped by on a Friday night it was busy but we were told to seat ourselves. Almost immediately, a server brought over chips and salsa (loved that). The chips were warm and the salsa was really good! My boyfriend and I both ordered Tommy's Taco Dinner-one with chicken and one with beef. The plate includes three fajita tacos with sauteed onions, jalapeños and chile con queso, along with a side of rice and beans. The beef was definitely better than the chicken, though they were both just ok. The chile con queso had great flavor, but I found the chicken a little bit dry. The rice lacked flavor in my opinion but my boyfriend thought it was fine. The beans were nothing special but they were good. Service was where things really fell short. Throughout the meal, we needed refills, hot sauce, and extra napkins, but getting our waitress or anyone else to come back to our table was a struggle. When it came time to pay, we had to go up to the counter just to get her attention which was frustrating. Because of that, I'm taking off a star. Overall, this wasn't my favorite place. After months of driving by, I'm glad I finally tried it and it's clearly a popular spot. The food was decent, but not good enough to make me want to return.

Yelp
WHAT A FIND! In a shopping center, nothing fancy, but my goodness....the food is authentic and DELICIOUS. Fresh chips, salsa on point. Some of the best enchiladas I have had. Rice and beans are the real deal. Highly, highly, highly recommend.

Yelp
Last year, they closed for a few months for renovations, which can seen by the new ceiling tiles. Otherwise, everything else looks pretty much the same. I recently thought about how a coworker mentioned a long time ago how Mexican restaurants make really good fries, so I decided to try them out at a restaurant nearby. The Hamburgesa estilo San Isidro comes with homemade fries (thick cut, hot and tender due to the oil). I would have liked some of the fries to be crunchy. It takes a little bit longer to cook than a taco plate, but it arrives 10-15 minutes later. I've seen hamburgers with avocado and melted cheese but not one I remember with refried beans, so I was intrigued. The burger was thick and tasted classic-style with the beefsteak tomatoes even with all the different toppings. The Tommy's taco can be made with beef, pork or chicken, but beef is classic. The meat and flour tortilla were hot, and the chile con queso was warm. As usual, the complimentary chips and salsa were warm. They still get about 80% of the restaurant full during lunch time, so you won't need to wait for a table to empty.

Yelp
Wow, what a hidden gem! I was brought to Mi Sombrero by friends and can't thank them enough. There is a shared parking lot in front of the shopping center and a good number of spots. The restaurant isn't large, but was pretty full, including a large party. The food was some of the best Tex Mex I've had in a while. I ordered a Miller Lite and it was served with a chilled mug; this was the coldest beer I have had in a very long time. For food, I had the Tuity Fruity (1 chicken enchilada, 1 ground beef, and 1 cheese with rice and beans); it was SO good! The chicken enchilada had dark meat which was a really nice and tasty distinction from other Tex Mex restaurants. The entire plate was delicious and service was good (a little slow, but only due to the large party being served). You pay at the counter. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Food is above average. The service is great. The prices are very reasonable. I would recommend trying.

Yelp
The staff were absolutely amazing. They were outgoing, friendly, attentive, and had a great sense of humor. The portions are huge. Prices are reasonable. They offer delicious Tex-Mex.

Yelp
I have been here before but it's been a minute. I called to place and order to go and all my requests were taken. I was told my order would be ready in about fifteen minutes. When I arrived, I was greet as so as the door was opened. My food was packed and ready for transport. They neatly stacked everything in a box and everything stayed in place during the drive. One of my dining companions was jonesing for enchiladas and they told me everything was very good and they appreciated that the sauce was not spicy. My other dining companion ordered Tommy's Tacos and also enjoyed their meal. I had carne guisada tacos... nice gravy and tender meat. I also enjoyed the chips and salsa... warning it's got a little kick. In the hood... check it out

Yelp
Great food! Service is great...we walk in and they know what we drink from just the second time going. Do not worry about the ceiling tiles, it has nothing to do with the owner. The space is rented and the property owner just temps the roof. So, when it rains they have leaks, but never on you or other tables.

Yelp
As of September 9th, Mi Sombrero is finally open. The place looks nice and they now have light music playing. The food still tastes great. The waitstaff is still the same and they are waiting to see familiar faces as well as new ones. So happy that they are open.

Keith R.

Yelp
I've been so disappointed since Mi Sombrero suddenly closed. My wife & I had been enjoying this restaurant for years & we were never disappointed! Never had a negative experience. We've been anxiously awaiting their reopening. Checking their website, I was shocked to see the "temporarily closed" notification changed to "Permanently Closed". I only hope the new reopening notice in this review section is true. Houston needs Mi Sombrero! My wife & I need Mi Sombrero! PLEASE!!

Yelp
Authentic Mexican restaurant! Their plates are really filling, they have a lot to choose from!

Yelp
Real Latinos who know what Mexican food should taste like eat here! We have been going for years for breakfast, lunch, dinner, birthday events and takeout. The waitstaff knows us and they recognize my voice on the phone. They are quick to make sure our needs are met. The beer comes with an ice cold mug and they have Mexican Cokes. They speak fluent English and Spanish. No language barrier. They have upgraded all the booths and tablecloths. The decor is like an old Mexican diner. My husband rates restaurants by the refried beans and these are #1!! Can't go wrong eating here.
google avatar

Cheryl D.

Yelp
Amazing Tommy's Tacos. Yummy food. Looks like a hole in the wall but sooooo worth it! Been coming here for years and never disappoints. Friendly staff as well.

A S.

Yelp
Closed temporarily due to damage from Beryl, but reopened around September. Good Mexican food.

Yelp
I am fat, this is why. Having been warned of the portion size here, I still had to see for my self. While I have conquered my orders each and every time, it prob isnt a good thing. No clue what is in the plate, it's fatty, happiness inducing, silencing of ur chatty friends. Why do I come back, no idea how to answer that. It's so bad for you, that my friends dream of this place. Not I, just them.

Elizabeth V.

Yelp
Soon to reopen! The news as of September 2nd: just awaiting City of Houston Permitting! Several neighborhoods are waiting - waiting - for our very favorite spot to reopen.
google avatar

Jeremy B.

Yelp
Great place for some great food and amazing service. Best salsa I've ever had and the Tommy tacos are always delicious. I've been eating here for close to 25+ years and it never disappoints.

Yelp
We were up visiting from Texas and their food is legit! Delicious. We had a large group and they did a great job taking care of us. Also have a good range of options for vegans, which is appreciated!

Andy L.

Yelp
Have not been back since pandemic . Quality of food remains good. Service attentive. The price has gone up tho.
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
Yummy cheap food! lady's plate (taco, enchilada, bean tostada) - less than $8 - it was still very filling so I shared with my boyfriend. got a chicken enchilada, a soft flour beef taco, and a bean tostada which was bigger than I expected. My boyfriend got Tommy's taco a la carte for $4.50 and a 2 enchilada plate with rice and beans for less than $10. He preferred the chicken enchilada over his beef enchilada. Tommy's Taco was really good also. Jamaica drink (hibiscus) was really good too, not too sweet, very refreshing, and a very large cup. Good complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa is a little spicy

Yelp
Tommy tacos were AMAZING. Will definitely be back! Small restaurant but family owned

Erica S.

Yelp
Food is so so GOOD! Service is fast and excellent. I've been coming here for 10+ years still taste the same never disappoints, best tex-mex ever !

Lisa S.

Yelp
Food tasted alright. Rice needed more seasoning - we added more salt but it was still bland. Beans were ok. Service was average. My water glass was never refilled. When we arrived, it was empty and became busy when we left.

veronica ..

Yelp
The food is wonderful. They are fast and pricing is very reasonable. I inly hate that they are too far but so worth the drive on a weekend.

Rose D.

Yelp
Everything is good and staff is awesome Carne guisada tacos and Tommy Tacos are good. Breakfast is perfect!

James G.

Yelp
When are you planning to open please let us know. Missing the good food. Good place to eat hope you open soon with a grand opening.

Angelica S.

Yelp
Is it ever going to reopen? It's been closed most of the summer for "deep cleaning." I miss this place!
google avatar

Blake H.

Yelp
I keep coming back for the Tommy's Tacos! They're addicting! Super friendly staff and great food.

Missy T.

Yelp
I meet someone for lunch, order an enchilada plate , which u can choose chicken or beef, so I opted for beef, specifying beef fajita. At the end of my dining experience, the waitstaff brought the receipt. To my surprise, I was charged an additional $1.99 for each enchilada, simply because i asked for beef fajita, yet all the waitstaff would say "oh I'm so sorry", yet proceeded to ring up my bill for payment. The courteous thing to do would have been..... When taking my order. Customer: For my enchiladas, i want beef fajita. Waitstaff: That'll be an add'l $1.99 per enchilada, is that okay? Customer: (given the opportunity to accept or decline the upcharge) --------- And the ground beef in the hard shell taco was not good at all, yet I didn't complain, considering I was taken aback by the $3.98 extra on my bill.

Yelp
Neighborhood icon if you live in GOOF you have ate here Toomys Tacos are my go to reasonably priced and good service breakfast tacos to go are the bomb

Yelp
Good Mexican food both Tex mex & traditional Mexican. Reasonably priced! Great service being going there for the past 10 years Since I moved to independence Heights
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and great customer service. Everything on the menu is authentic. Reminds me of my grandma cooking :)
google avatar

Paige G.

Yelp
Mi Sombrero is the best quaint neighborhood joint for that early morning hankering for hot Mexican comfort food. The staff are all so friendly and the food is authentic Mexican food with the classic Tex Mex dishes as well. Just your good down home cooking. Their refried beans are so delicious and their tortillas are homemade and the best I've had!
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
Really impressed with the food here. The fajitas were really good and the queso with the beef in it was amazing. Portions were more than adequate. We had plenty to go for another meal. Service was very good and the entire staff was very friendly. The inside looks a little dated but the good more than made up for it. Definitely will come back.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Mi Sombrero is perfect! Extremely reasonable, good service and tasty food! I love going here and you can get two meals and margs for $29! Keep up the great work! I will continue to return.

Rob H.

Yelp
Always consistently well done. Tommy's tacos are great. Guac and salsa are highly recommended. Service is so nice.
google avatar

Glenn B.

Yelp
What an absolute failure. The food was fair but the place is old and tired. It should have been a sign that exterior sign is barely legible due to neglect. What is with the forced - buy 2 or 3 breakfast tacos and not just one and they all had to be the same, not 2 or 3 different tacos. The people bordered on hostile if you asked for a simple substitution. The same goes for asking for a Sample of a sauce. Forget it. I'm not your ideal customer but your Sombrero must be too tight because you are no ones ideal mexican restaurant.

Amanda N.

Yelp
I love the carne guisada here! It's so comforting and the tortillas are so soft and fluffy. It's heart warming food!
google avatar

Melanie O.

Yelp
I'm in Houston for a week and stopped by this local hole in the wall and when I tell you IT WAS SO GOOD. We immediately was welcomed by this spicy homemade salsa which was bomb and then ordered the guacamole which was a 7/10 but still good then I ordered beef quesadillas and it was so yummy. Deff try this local business if you are in town
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Food was great. Homemade flour tortillas. Carne guisada was tender and flavorful. Beef fajita, beans, were also good. Salsa was spicy and good too. Its a hole in the wall but dont mind that at all if service and food is great.
google avatar

Fanny T.

Yelp
Hole in the wall with homemade Mexican food!! I ordered the plate of flautas and they were soo tasty!! The plates are big and the prices are cheap.
google avatar

Stephen G.

Yelp
TOMMY TACOS!!!! Beef fajita tacos with grilled onions and jalapeños. Then topped with queso! Guisado is very good as well.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
I had the carne guisada plate. It was a VERY good choice. Prompt friendly service, what more do you want?
google avatar

Rodrick B.

Yelp
Still putting out great food and great service. This place was my dad's favorite through the 80s and 90s, my friends and I ate here all the time as we went school in the area. 25 years later and bam, the same! AndI LOVEthat! The whole area has turned into gentrified nonsense, but not them! An unassuming shopping center, the same old sign and TOMMY freaking tacos!!! Never change, north side history needs remembering and the do it so well!!!

P V.

Yelp
Very authentic, great taste, polite staff, ample parking. Prices are a bargain for the quality of the food.

Yasmin L.

Yelp
Everything about this restaurant is amazing! Definitely try it out if you are craving Mexican food!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
If you are looking for a good ole fashioned, hole in the wall that gets straight to the point with GREAT food, this is the spot!! Absolutely love them. We have ordered to go in the past, this past week we dined in. The service was awesome and food came out fast! We love it here and will definitely add to my monthly stop for a Tex mex fix! Tommy Tacos are a must!!

Katy C.

Yelp
Loveeee their Tommy's tacos. My boyfriend and I pick up from here once every two weeks it seems. Definitely an easy, delicious dinner choice if we don't feel like cooking.
