I've been to SATX plenty of times since I was a kid, but never have I ever eaten at what's simply considered the Alamo City's flagship Mexican restaurant until yesterday. I treated my younger brother here for dinner on his birthday.
On the western edge of Downtown, it's situated in an area called the San Antonio Mercado. And the vibe I got was that of a lively fiesta south of the border. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by what's a staple in Mexican households, an altar of religious Catholic artifacts and candles. We then took our seats at one of the tables in the inner dining area, which was nicely decorated to reflect our neighbor across the Rio Grande. The friendly Minerva took great care of us with not that much left before closing time.
So, as I do with any Mexican eatery, I initially sized up Mi Tierra's offerings by trying its chips and salsa. My theory is, if they're tasty, the food will be as well. Both were a nice introduction to the muy delicioso cheese enchiladas plate I ordered. The meal consisted of the enchiladas flanked by rice and refried beans, and even though it was late at night, the freshness was still there and the love put into its preparation was evident. The portions were just enough to fill me up.
While it's a bakery, I didn't get a chance to partake of the sweets though I caught a glimpse of them. I was stuffed already, if anything.
So, should you ever find yourself in Wembyville¹, don't hesitate to break bread at Mi Tierra. You don't need a passport for such a superb Mexican dining experience.
