"The first thing you may notice when you walk into El Oriental de Cuba are the button-down shirts hanging in dry-cleaner plastic towards the back. We have no idea why they’re there, but it’s not important, because the second thing you’ll notice is a menu of big Cuban specialties. The empanadas are among our favorite in the city thanks to perfectly flaky crusts and meaty fillings, and the Cuban sandwich is excellent. They don’t have a liquor license and not everything on the menu is a hit (the mofongo is a little dry), but this is a great option when you want some big plates of pork or chicken." - dan secatore

"Jamaica Plain is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great Caribbean food. The Cuban sandwich at El Oriental De Cuba is a good place to start. Savory pork, tangy mustard, gooey cheese, and griddled bread equals the best-case scenario for your comfort food needs. El Oriental De Cuba is open for takeout." - Terrence Doyle

Google
New owners and chefs for about a year and a half now. The place looks amazing after being remodeled and expanded. So ignore those bad reviews from 2 years ago and longer. Best Dominican Spanish food in Massachusetts. I love the food made fresh daily with original family recipes and they also serve beer, wine and mimosa's. Catering for all types of events and holidays.

Highly recommend this place the food is absolutely delicious and the enviroment is great.

My new go to take out. Cheap and HUGE portions. My meal is easy going to feed me for 3 days. They gave me the largest container of rice ever and it was perfectly cooked. The beans were just fine. The maduros were perfectly cooked. I gotta shredded beef for my main and it was tasty, though a little salty, which I personally don’t mind. Flan was as good.

The food was soooo good it was so mouthful the quality and quantity was perfect good Dominican food Amazing

If I only had $20 left to my name I would use it to buy the beef stew and the passion fruit juice. I really liked the atmosphere, many people knew eachother so it just made the place feel cozy! But really, get the beef stew and thank me later, and thank the owners for very reasonable prices

I visited Boston to see my friends in Jamaica Plain. They had never been to this restaurant so we tried it together. We were all astounded by the flavors! I managed to fit in two trips to the restaurant during my stay in Boston! The ambiance was amazing with great music and a community/family feel between some local patrons and the restaurant staff. The first time we went we shared an order of the carne guisada and the mofongo de pollo. That was my first time having mofongo and it was enjoyable but the carne guisada was something sent from heaven. During our second visit, we liked it so much that we had separate orders of the carne guisada, it's just that good! The passion fruit juice was also fire, the flavor was so pungent and delicious. The staff were amazing and kind, I wish I had known how to speak Spanish.

My Dominican friend took me to try and was really really good I ate and took a plate for work later on. I had the Mofongo didn’t look that big but damn I couldn’t walk after I was done so much plantains so much I would get with fried chicken or shrimp tho. Nice atmosphere good Spanish music playing in the background workers was nice listening to my weak Spanish and recommend dishes and the juice I had was really good to I didn’t take picture.

Their food is really delicious. But they need to pay attention to detail. I ordered my pork chops to be cooked from scratch, not smoked. She specifically asked me if I wanted it smoked and I said no I want it from scratch. I dont understand what was the point in asking if you were going to give it to me how you wanted anyways. The first time I ordered food it was super delicious but the wait time was an hour. This time I was told 30 mins and I waited an extra 5 minutes not as bad as last time. I think there could be a little better management. I hate that I’ve had these two experiences because the food was good the first time I ordered they got my order correct. I am pregnant and I am very particular about my cravings and for my order to be delivered incorrectly is a waste of money for me because I’m not eating these smoked pork chops. I will not go back I am too far.

Yelp
I walked in and ordered takeout, and everything was very well packed and had good portion sizes. The food is so flavorful and refreshing compared to a lot of other Boston restaurants. I felt like I was back in New Jersey! Their website does not show the correct prices, though. It must be very old because everything is $4-5 more than it shows on their online menu so our bill was higher than we thought it would be. I think it's a bit overpriced for what it is.

John H.

Yelp
I came for ropa vieja, but based on the other menu items it reminds me more of a Puerto Rican cuisine. Rustic food. I liked the rice and red beans but the beef tasted a bit stale. As if they shredded it ahead of time for later use. Also the base needed more flavor. I ordered a mofongo to go, which was decent but desperately needed a sauce. In and outdoor seating available. It can be very loud inside.

Estella S.

Yelp
The chicarron de pollo is AMAZING. The Tres Leche cake is the best and their food is fresh. The only thing is--the online menu is not always available and they don't warn you about that and sometimes the customer service on the phone is not organized.

Yelp
Miami restaurant has been on my radar for a while now, and I was really so impressed! I ordered takeout on a day that l was low on groceries, and I will definitely be adding it to my takeout rotation! My standards for Cuban food are high as someone raised in Miami but I have less background on everyday Dominican food. I ordered 2 empanadas (one chicken one beef), pollo a la plancha (grilled chicken) with rice and beans, and a Cuban sandwich. The empanadas were delicious, the most on par with my comfort food that I've found in Boston. The chicken was great, cooked with peppers and onions and served with so much rice it honestly justified the whole order. The beans were Dominican style red beans, which varies from my staple of black beans but were very good. Lastly, the Cuban sandwich was not bad, although had some extra ingredients (lettuce, tomato, mayo) that I feel should not be on a Cuban sandwich, and the ham was quite thick for my liking. This is an item I would probably not order again based on my preferences. Overall, I will definitely order from Miami restaurant again and look forward to trying more items on the menu!

Yelp
This place never disappoints. The Churrasco I get almost every other week LOL & the Carne & Bistec always on point. If I'm starving!!!!! & need good eats! IM GOING TO MIAMI's it's a Cuban restaurant but the cooks are definitely DOMINICAN ‼‼

Yelp
I ordered the mofungo with chicken. It was alright, I was hoping that there was some sauce to put on it besides garlic sauce. I enjoyed my mango smoothie it was great with milk. The food portion is great and doesn't break your pockets. I highly recommend it. Customer service: 4 Food: 4

Yelp
Ordered off DoorDash and took over an hour to deliver. I ordered the Cuban sandwich, stew chicken, and chicken mofongo. The food was bland and underwhelming.

Jose B.

Yelp
Solid Dominican food restaurant with a wide variety to choose from. They serve beer as well and desserts and awesome fruit milk shakes made the Dominican way with evaporated milk and ice. I say try them very tasty and fresh food and no Dominican food is not spicy per se but you will be provided a bottle Tabasco if wanted.

Kim T.

Yelp
The food here is great. I had the chicken soup. It was a "small" size, but the serving was quite large and came with rice too. My husband got the fried fish along with a side of rice and beans. We originally wanted two different items, but they didn't have them. Still, everything was delicious. We did wait a bit for the food. As others have said, the restaurant has a very laid-back vibe with folks hanging out watching sports and a slow kitchen. The waitress only spoke to us in Spanish, which my husband luckily speaks. Don't come too hungry or in a hurry as you'll have to wait a bit for your food.

Yelp
Shit was bussing, it was mad good, almost busted a nut eating this food, best restaurant out their

Yelp
I had their cuban sandwich with " the works" it was epic. Huge foot sub style, I'll be certainly stopping by every time I am in JP and pick one up!

Yelp
Went to a Miami Restaurant for some mofongo a bit after lunch. The place is quite small but there is still plenty of seating. They have menus as well as their menu on a board behind the cash register area. The place is actually pretty loud both from the music that they play but I didn't mind too much. The place makes me feel like I'm back a my local Cuban joint in Miami. We ordered the cheese mofongo and the guanábana smoothie (soursop) and it was all incredible!! The cheese mofongo had enough garlic and a lot of cheese! I was so happy to find a place that serves cheese mofongo since he most common are definitely pork or chicharrón. The smoothie was pretty tasty and I'd definitely get again. The portion was really big and I shared it with my partner and we were both pretty full. The main issue with this place is the service. It's a bit confusing as to whether you should order at the counter or sit and wait for the one waitress. This wasn't so bad and we were told to sit and that someone would be with us soon. The service overall was really really slow both to take our order and for the food to come out. I can deal with the food taking a while if it's good (like in this case) but it was just a bit annoying to have to wait to for our order to be taken for that long. I recommend but I would really suggest ordering to go and taking a walk around and then coming back to pick up your order! Food is really really great!

Yelp
This place use to be so good before , there has been a big turn over lately. Some of the waitress are nice but others like example, and older light skin lady working there is so rude to people , she will give you anything but what you ask for, she tried giving me something cold and also substituting an ingredient without asking and also giving and not say anything and when I nicely said I'm sorry ma'am that is not what I ask for nor want or can't have , she don't know anyone's health issues or allergies she got an attitude and said oh well I don't have anything else and got upset and put a face and was very rude and threw away what she had prepared rudely that another employee noticed her behavior and even told her but we do have what she's asking for why can't you just get it , so the other employee just apologized for her. I won't be going back after so many years. SAD!

Amani N.

Yelp
Overpriced for the level of service you receive. Was treated disrespectfully by staff when I asked about my options for sides, etc. I have food allergies and it seemed not to be taken seriously.

Katrina G.

Yelp
Went in here to order a Cuban coffee...its a Cuban restaurant, called Miami, and the woman behind the counter had no idea what I was talking about. I tried explaining to her what a cafe cubano/ cafecito is and she was completely confused. They called themselves a Cafe, they have the machine. They serve coffee but don't know what a Cuban coffee is. I would make it myself at home but its just so different when a white girl makes it. I wanted an authentic Cuban coffee, damnit! I ended up ordering a cafe con leche, no leche, lots of sugar and she still seemed confused. I pointed to the small Styrofoam cup and asked what drink goes in there and she said "it's called a small". Either she's dumb or she's not really Cuban. I'm from Miami and if you go anywhere and ask for a Cuban coffee they give you a shot of Cuban espresso, sweetened that basically feels like crack. That's all I wanted. That's all I was craving and I was let down. Take the word "Miami" from your name, you guy are anything but.

Yelp
Arrived on a weekday night to find the place pretty much empty with half the items on the menu gone. Brush up on your Spanish if you plan to dine here. I don't think the language barrier is necessarily a bad thing as it speaks for authenticity. Too bad the food really sucked. The place also doesn't take restaurant.com gift certificates, a warning to those who wanna eat here on another's dime. The waitress's smile was the only saving grace; that's why it's 2 stars instead of 1.

John B.

Yelp
Apparently, you can't go home. I used to frequent this place when I lived in JP 15 years ago. It WAS a favourite. Not any more. The goal was to order 3 subs to go. We failed in our mission. The music was so loud when we entered, we could talk to the waitress. It was impressively almost a loud as a show by Boston's Zulus After much communication effort (including pointing the specific items on the menu), We ordered 3 subs. We then waited for close to 40 minutes. The place had more the feel of a bunch of friends getting together for Sunday afternoon beers, than an actual eating establishment. Finally got our food and left. When we got home, we opened the bag to 2 sandwiches and I assume is an order of some kind of fried chicken. The chicken (which we didn't order) can be best described as some kind of fried, dried chicken jerky. Overcooked beyond belief. The bread was so stale on the sandwiches that I ended up tossing mine into the trash and eating leftovers instead. Pretty much a ware of $30. Wish I could give a 0 (zero rating) Yuck.

Damien S.

Yelp
"Cubano Regular por favor" (sheepish smile for my cliched espanol) - You want everything on it? "Well, what's everything?" - Lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo. "Um, actually can I just have yellow mustard and pickles?" (Lip quivering, tears welling) - Ok. I think Andre 3000 said it best when he pined: "Why-o, why-o, why-o, why-o, why-o..." $6 for the sandwich + pina pop puts the price on par with peers (Alliteration? Yeah, you thought it was rain.) The shop is tiny, simple in operation and ornate in visualization, with equal parts Cuba/Red Sox paraphernalia on the walls. People outstanding, food average. Grab one to go and screen a movie at Video Underground next door. Quick, summer's almost gone...

Yelp
This place can be intimidating for gringos who don't know Spanish, I gotta be honest about that right up front. At least I was greeted in pretty decent English, all I heard throughout the restaurant was Spanish from everyone else. I was looking for take out late at night, parking was pretty easy to find on the street but I'm not so sure about that during busier times in the day. It's a pretty tiny place with a walk up counter to get your order on. I studied the menu for about 5 minutes before making a selection, I ended up with two "dinner plates", one chicken and one steak. They both came with sweet plantains, white rice and a side of beans. The steak came in "red sauce" (how they described it to me). It looked fiery but when we dug in there wasn't any heat at all which I'm ok with either way. The plantains and beans were flipping FANTASTIC! I love the creaminess of the sauce with the brown beans, I love how it seeps down in between the grains of white rice and flavors everything else on your plate. It's my fault I didn't realize the chicken came out fried, it was also very small pieces of what I believe were the thigh and it included a lot of bone. I've had this style similiarly in Latin restaurants before, it's just not my favorite. The shredded steak was my biggest complaint, much of it was overcooked and it had to be drown in the red sauce to make it more palpable. I'll be returning for sure, even though I'm not in JP all that often. Great prices for the crazy amount of food you receive and I thank them for manning the counter with someone who speaks English and can take an order without a translator.

Julia V.

Yelp
I really liked the food. I had ox tail stew with green plantains (tostones). My husband had chicken stew, rice and plaintain. They were out of maduros and guandules. Which was a bummer because we drove there just for them. The waitress had really short temper and she was rude! The experience was partially spoiled by her bad attitude. As much as I love Cuban food, I wouldn't go there again just so that I have to endure her rudeness.

Brenda C.

Yelp
Terrible service and business practice. Went here for dinner with my boyfriend a few weeks ago and we got deceived by the lady taking our order. She claimed to not speak any English (or pretended not to, who knows), and insisted we speak in Spanish. Since my boyfriend knows a little more Spanish than I do, he ordered for the both of us. We were horrified when they came out with our food and gave us two of each of our orders, which is double the amount of what we ordered - 4 entrees instead of 2! When we tried to explain to the waitress about this misunderstanding in our broken Spanish, she eventually took back the extra food. We thought she understood us but they actually packed the food for us to take home and insisted we pay for all 4 entrees when we had only ordered 2. We did not take the food to go and told them to keep it. Very disappointed with how they tried to take advantage of us as we didn't speak Spanish. Will not be back again.

Yelp
The food and service I received today is worth less than one star...unprofessional staff and shitty food will ensure that this is the very last time this place will ever see a dime from me. Not only was I hung up on (twice) while giving my order, when I called back to confirm my order the woman who answered the phone acted as if I was bothering her... and when I arrived to pick up my food wasn't ready....as for the food... simply trash - I ordered chicharon de pollo and received overcooked battered and fried chicken that had been sitting and drying out underneath a heat lamp. nothing like what is pictured (or what I'm used to getting from this place) the bean sauce purée was watery and flavorless and the Maduro were clearly from the frozen Goya package. I could and should have gone to anyone's anbuelita house for a better experience as a whole. No wonder Alex chimi has a line down the block and this place is basically empty. I've never had such piss poor service in my life. I deserve a refund for my money and my time.

Tatiana R.

Yelp
Customer service was blah. I bought steak and bread sandwich. Didn't ask me what toppings I preferred. First of who puts ketchup on a steak and bread sandwich. That should be optional. But normally a steak sandwich unless specified does not come with ketchup. They only layered it with one very thin piece of steak that had no flavor. The steak was hard to hard to chew. By the time I could chewed the steak the bread was already down. The bread is not bad. The onions should have been cooked with the steak at-least. The onions were raw. This is so far off from a real spanish steak sandwich.

Natasha M.

Yelp
I love me some Dominican breakfast, but the mangu (mashed plantain) here was pretty bad. It was soaked in oil, rather runny, and too salty. It was made to order so I had high expectations. When I opened my to-go plate, I immediately noticed how oily my entire plate was. I ordered fried cheese which clearly went straight from the fryer onto my plate (I blotted it repeatedly), creating a pool of oil, gross. My scrambled eggs were dry and crumbly, similar to the eggs I made when I was 10. Really so disappointed with the Dominican food in JP. Get it together people! Please :)

KATE G.

Yelp
1st and foremost, anyone I mean anyone - Cuban, American, Mexican, Dominican, Rastafarian, Vegetarian, Neapolitan that can say that this place is better that El Oriental Cuba either has no sense of smell or has been hitting some kind of pipe. Iam sorry but I will organize a plate by plate side by side challenge, I will fund it myself. The problems: Most every dish is not avail. IE. they do not attract a crowd = food sub par they do not give a care about clientele IE this is not the focus of the business. Cuban sandwich OK cause we were starving. Tostados OK . Really what is going on here = greasy take out. Sorry if I offend anyone - but y'all know what really goes on here.

Alex T.

Yelp
I went into Miami Restaurant earnestly looking for quality Cuban food. My girlfriend and I could not be more wrong to give this place a try. The first red light turned on when we realized that most of the people there weren't eating at all. They were just drinking beers and watching soccer. This was at a prime dinnertime on a weekend. The next warning should have been that the waitress, who is dressed like she is about to go to a nightclub, did not speak ANY English. I understand that English is not the first language for everybody but I would think that you would least have to be able to communicate the menu or to understand food allergies for customers. Luckily, neither of us are fussy or have any outstanding food preferences so we just picked some very basic dishes off the menu. It took FOREVER for the food to come out and when it did, it was barely edible. The proteins were way overcooked, the food was bland, and the salad (carelessly chopped lettuce and tomatoes) did not have any flavoring AT ALL. Somebody tell me how any of this is excusable? I guess I should be happy I didn't get food poisoning because the ingredients looked stale. On top of everything the price we paid for the garbage they tried to pass for food was egregious. Yelpers do yourself a favor and skip this place unless you want to watch soccer matches and enjoy a couple bottles of Corona.

Celeste M.

Yelp
Upon the recommendation of Roni E, I went here after my first day back at work. There had been a lot of meetings and suddenly I realized that it was 3pm and that I hadn't had lunch. So I decided to go with lunchner. It is absolutely correct that you can get a lot of food here for 8 or 9 bucks. I feel that Miami succeeds where El Oriental has gone astray recently. Miami Restaurant is faster and cheaper, if not as "pretty." The stewed chicken meal I got was great. The chicken, rice, and beans were all good. And the owner was very helpful when I said.. "I'm not sure what I want, but I think I want a plate." I'm not sure if it comes with it or if he was being nice, but I also got about 5 plantains which is enough to win me over. I LOVE plantains. I even bought some earlier to fry myself. But these maduros were actually not very sweet (and no, they weren't tostones). Although I may not get the sweet plantains again, I will most likely be back for the other food and with the bf. Fun Fact: There were wacky soda brands in there, including "Country Club" in the flavors of orange and raspberry.

Kan Y.

Yelp
This place is ridiculous. I think it is the best food I've had in this city. I walked in and asked what the most popular item was. Chicken stew. Yes. Lord. Yes. It's enough food for three normal eaters, two big eaters, or one competitive eater. All for $8. Amaaaazing and delicious. Go. Now!

Joe S.

Yelp
A solid, affordable neighborhood joint. Friendly staff, nice casual environment. Still, I can't help but be a little bummed that while there's all kinds of fresh produce popping off the vines locally, the tomatoes in the cubano taste like cardboard and the lettuce looks to have been flown in from 2000+ miles away. Places like Chacarerro seem to have figured out a way to get some fresher food into what's otherwise a comparable meal.

Carlos S.

Yelp
My wife wanted mofongo. One of those cravings that she gives me when we lived in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I tried her to accept something else but no, she had to have mofongo!!! I called Miami by phone and when I arrived I had my orders of mofongo with fried pork were ready. Good price, this is the deal. Nothing fancy but real Caribbean informal atmosphere. If you are looking for fake Caribbean food in a fake Caribbean environment go to La Fábrica in Cambrige.

Jessica B.

Yelp
We visited Miami Restaurant on Monday after the Marathon, as my husband was hungry from running 26.2 miles. It's definitely a neighborhood gem and I see why. I had the steak sandwich and a pineapple smoothie; my husband and brother had the fried chicken plate with sweet plantains and rice & beans. Everything was delicious but the beans were probably the best I've ever had. The smoothie was also really good! Staff and other guests were also really nice and welcoming! We'll definitely visit again! So good!

Andreina C.

Yelp
Let me tell you one thing and one thing only: It is very rare for me to go to a restaurant and not eat food. People who knows me knows that I don't play around when it comes to food. I'm more of a "Friendo Y Comiendo" kinda gal. And even though I am Dominican and should be able to eat and enjoy this type of food, I am also very critical when it comes to it. The service was great. The atmosphere was great. The food? Not so great! I ordered Mofongo with chicharron (it sounds iffy but it's tasty, tasty if it's done well) and it was greasy and the chicharron tasted awful. I asked if the Mofongo came with a little soup on the side (the soup makes it extra tasty and delicious) it didn't. The Mofongo came with a tasteless shredded iceberg lettuce with a slice of tomato, didn't like it either. I ordered a small side of fries, even though it was so big to be small (if you're a french fries lover this is your place!) It tasted weird. So I stroked out. I also ordered Morir Soñando, to wash everything down but it was way too sweet and it wasn't fresh out of the blender, I couldn't drink it. But my mom and grandma both liked the rice, beans and chicken. The lemonades they had was way too bitter. I came out of the restaurant with an empty stomach, not satisfied at all! But I recommended to those who don't care about greasy food and stuff and likes huge portions of food. Maybe I've being away from D.R for too long.

Panda P.

Yelp
Let me just tell you... for $9 you can get a WHOLE LOTTA food here. They had ran outta the Carne Guisada con Papas (which is the Beef Stew in tomato sauce) so instead they were able to do the same thing but with pork instead. I'm actually kinda glad they did because the pork was phenomenal. It was very tender and soft and complimented the tomato sauce real well. While we waited I had actually wondered what was taking so long since there was a box sitting at the counter and what we were waiting for. The plate included rice, beans and plantains. Apparently, my meal ended up coming in 2 boxes and a plastic container. I had also ordered a beef patty, not realizing how much food I was actually getting for $1. Thus, my $9 meal that lasted me both dinner and lunch the following day. So if you're looking for good cheap eats, be sure to make a stop in here.

David M.

Yelp
Daddy Yankee and Prince Royce blare through the speakers, so don't expect to have any sort of quality conversation over lunch or dinner. The food is a little better than El Oriental's and the ambiance more authentic (picture overweight dominican guys staring at your girlfriend's butt). Beware though, they may rip you off if you do not frequent the place. They insisted on charging me $10 for a sandwich listed as $8 on their menu. El oriental (down the street) sells the same sandwich (Cubano especial) for $8 and won't try to swindle you if they suspect you're a gringo or just passing by. Lots of older men hangout and have beers here. It's most definitely one of Boston's premiere Latin sausage fests... or "fiesta de salchichas." I would have given this place 2 stars but I endorse a nice sausage fest.

Mon R.

Yelp
The service was shotty (the girl was more interested in flirting with some customers than providing real service). The food was a-mazing. Definitely worth visiting.

Beverly G.

Yelp
I want to like this place, I really do. I think the food is great, and incredibly inexpensive; my chicharron has always been really tasty, and I have no idea what they do to the rice and the plantains to make them so delicious, but they really are, as almost every reviewer has said. Their other stuff is good too; my friend and I came here the other day and she ordered a milkshake, which she said was pretty close to the Platonic ideal of milkshakes. But I've been here three times and each time, the service has been sorely lacking. The second time I was here, my party and I waited upwards of an hour to get our food! I'm not exaggerating - we timed it. There was *no one* in the restaurant, so we had no idea what was taking our food so long. I thought maybe this was just a fluke so I came here again. So first, I order chicharron with rice, plantains and beans. The waitress brings out the chicharron, but no rice and beans. I wait about 20 minutes. I ask the waitress where the sides I ordered were, and she said, "Oh, you wanted the special?" Later on, I asked the waitress three times - once in English, twice in Spanish - if I could have water. All she did was nod and say "yes," and I didn't get water until the third time, when I came up to the counter and asked for it, when a man (whom I presumed was the manager) gave it to me. I didn't finish my meal, good as it was. The waitress asked me if I was done. I wanted it to go, but she didn't box it up for me. Sigh. I wish I could say I'd be back again, since the food really is quite good. I'll grab it to go next time and see how that goes, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit down here again, unless I have two hours to kill and absolutely no other way to do it.

Yelp
This place has good, and authentic cuban food at great prices. I would say it's like home cooking by a pretty good cuban mom (3-4 stars). It says something that locals and family are always eating there, speaking spanish, and talking about cuban league baseball. However, this is more than made up for by the environment ... it's one of those restaurants that can take you another place with just a step through the front door. I truely appreciate this type of little getaway, in a world full of chains and sterile restaurants. So on personality, I'd give them 4-5 stars . I found the counter help amicable, and willing to explain things on the menu i didn't understand (everything), and suggest their favorites. I would suggest going with friends, so you can sample the huge variety of things you've never tried before. Strange fruity drinks, all sorts of meats cooked different ways and from different parts of the animal, vegetables and starches that I've never bought, and the old standby cuban ... This is a counter-service / booth / rocky little table seating type of place, that is definitley worth a visit when you want something totally casual and different. /tom

Yelp
Great Food, Looooooong Waits, Very Pleasant Servers. Recommended, but set your expectations.... My wife and I stumbled upon this place and could not believe our senses. We were in the neighborhood for a gig in the recording studio across the street and found a parking space right in front. When we walked in, we were immersed in the sounds of Spanish speaking a patrons and bachata playing very loudly over the speakers. The waitress at the counter handed us two trifold paper menus and we sat at our table and marveled at the selection. All the local favorites from the Cuban restaurants and cafes along Calle Ocho in Miami. My wife ordered the carne mechada and I ordered the breaded beef. The food was spectacular. The service was great. BUT, the kitchen was incredibly slow..... I mean bah-rooootally slow, and could apparently only put up one plate at a time. My wife's came out first and I told her to dig in. The waitress agreed and said the kitchen was very slow. She was halfway done before I got mine. We left room to share a flan which was out of this world. A great place to lounge and soak up the ambiance. Dinner for two on a Sunday night took over an hour and a half. Way too long for a relatively slow night. The food was amazing, but better to call ahead and place your order well on advance so the that you don't have to wait 40 minutes to see a plate of food and have it go to someone else. If you're going to MIami, be prepared to wait and come ready to drink.... The food took almost as long as the flight to Southern Florida and the drinks just help pass the time. This place is NOT for anyone expecting a five-star experience.

Yelp
Little hole in the wall and it has the BEST Mofongo I've had in a long time! Prices where good and the portions were big!

Yelp
I came here after i went to el mundo for a tour and i fell in love with the food. (anything that as RICE, BEANS, & MEAT makes me happy) Everything here is amazing and it's great to have lunch with someone or with a group of people! :)

Yelp
I was bored at work so I took a hop to the closest area that had some restaurants. I saw this place and I liked the decor outside so inside I went. I looked at the menu and the first thing I saw was MOFONGO! I haven't had this since I went to Puerto Rico 3 years ago, I had to get it. So now I'm at work and I open it up and see a giant Mofongo staring me down. It looks good but what size Pilon did they use? it was huge; whatever more food for me! :) My first bite is awesome, just enough garlic so my coworkers don't talk to me and just enough oil where I don't break out like I'm back in the 8th grade. Here is the sad thing about this dish, second bite, hmmm no chicharron. Maybe it's in the middle, third, fourth, fifth, OK were the hell is it, did i get some sort of vegetarian Mofongo that I don't know about. I mean it was $8 dollars and plantains cost 50 cents a pop. So i dissect the thing in order to find out where it is...... NOWHERE! Someone stole my Pork. :(

Yelp
I would've rather cross the street to El Oriental, but the joint was packed, so I kept my happy ass at Miami and ordered a Cuban sandwich. I like the lady behind the counter, she reminds me of a tia of mine, full of love making sure I eat.

Yelp
Best food ever. Best mofongo I have had. Great service. Food is very custom made. They ask me how exactly I wanted my food and thats what I got. The sympathy of the employees is like feeling that you are at home. I felt like I was eating at my grandmas house.

Yelp
Came here the other day for take out. I ended up spending more than I anticipated, but I left with a bag full of food. The food that I liked: 1) Maduros (aka sweet plantains) 2) Empanadas 3) Mashed Potatoes with meat filling (I forget what this is called on the menu) 4) Mofongo (mashed plaintains with garlic and diced up fried pork skin) Basically, I was a big fan of the appetizers. However, I thought the entrees that I ordered were only ok, but that's because I was trying some new things and there were parts of the dishes that I enjoyed and other parts that I did not. How can that be? Well, I ordered the hearty stew without know what the heck was in it. Lesson learned -- ask next time. The flavors of the stew were great, but in the stew there were unripe plaintains that were kind of on the hard side and not really to my liking. It was tasty stew, but I wasn't expecting so much starch -- in addition to the plaintains, I think there was yucca in the stew too. I'll come back again another day to try some of the other dishes, although I'll definitely remember to ask what might be in the dishes before ordering.

Yelp
Cubans [sandwiches] are delicious here. Warm buttery bread juxtaposed with cool mayo, melted cheese and salty juicy meat. Such a simple yet delicious combo. I also tried the oxtail which was yummy but the portion was way too small for $8. My words do the sandwiches little justice. You must experience this emotional food connection yourself...

Yelp
During our meal, it was quite good, but 10 hours later my friends and I all felt horrible and I had to spend the whole day within running distance of the bathroom. Food poisoning is never fun, and really should never happen in a restaurant, even in JP! For anyone with a sensitive stomach, I'd think twice about coming here...I know that I probably will never again, especially since there are so many good Latin American food joints in JP that are tastier and not going to make you sick the next day. But just so you know, the garlic shrimp was great, but the accompanying plaintain mash was dry and tasteless. We also ordered steak and onions and grilled chicken, and both had a nice grilled taste. The beef in tomato sauce was reminiscent of BBQ pulled pork and was filling. The beef empanadillas were huge and fried deliciousness. All dinners come with a choice of sides, and I'd recommend sticking to good ole rice and beans and the sweet plantains. I prefer El Oriental for better service, decor and food, and also the fact that I've never gotten sick afterward is a HUGE plus. PS We sat down at around 8pm on a Friday night, and we were the only non-Spanish speaking table, as well as the only people there for dinner. Apparently it's a quite popular place for local men to get beer in plastic cups. As long as you're OK with this, they make for great people watching.

Yelp
I decided to give this place not one but two tries a while back. When my friend and I got there we didn't know whether to sit down or wait but whatever that's no big deal. The waitress eventually told us to just sit anywhere we liked. I was really excited to be having Cuban food since I'm from Miami and felt homesick for some Miami foods. The dishes were a bit overpriced considering what they're selling to you, but I figured "well, where else am I gonna eat this?" When the waitress finally came over to take our order, the one thing I really wanted on the menu, they didn't have that day for some reason? Next wanted item, no luck either. That kind of irked me, but not enough to care that much... it was just confusing as to why you would have it on the menu and not actually offer it. All in all the food was okay. I had ropa vieja which is kind of hard to go wrong with. My friend had a pan con bistec and to be honest that was the worst pan con bistec I've ever seen in my life. I mean, I guess it tasted like one, but pan con bistec comes with an actual serving of bistec (steak) not shredded meat. I guess one of the saving graces was that at least my food was good and their drink selection is pretty all right, plus the waitress was really nice. I dont think I'd ever recommend this place to anyone though. I'd probably tell someone to go to El Oriental de Cuba across the street if they want Cuban food and I honestly don't even like that place either.
