I'm glad to have a place like this in Evanston. The space has a cool vibe with a combination of high-top, low-top, and couch seating good for small parties and groups.
The self-serve beer setup is the same as Tapster in Wicker Park - you receive a card from your server, insert the card in a slot above the taps, then pour as much or little as you want. While it wasn't obvious, tapping the screen also gave the full beer description. Unlike Tapster, there is no front counter to get a card -your server gives you a card once you are seated.
The taps were about half Midnight Pig's own with half from other small local breweries, including two ciders. There were no wines or cocktails on draft. Having never tried Midnight Pig, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of their beers. You could grab from a wall of mugs to fill, but I wish there were also taster glasses as an option. Prices per ounce were on par with other Evanston bars, but this is a great deal if you enjoy sampling beers. One negative was the water in the glass rinser tasting off, but I had no problem taking new glasses each time.
I enjoyed splitting the classic Nevin's fish and chips, and it was even better than I remember, possibly due to the taproom sharing a kitchen and chef with Pete Miller's.
