"Midnight Pig Tap Room is a self-serve beer bar opening on Monday in suburban Evanston. It is from the same company that ran Tommy Nevin’s Pub, which closed last year. The bar will feature 30 self-serve taps using touchscreen technology and will serve food including burgers, Korean-style chicken wings, and fish and chips using Nevin’s old recipe. The venue aims to attract Northwestern University students and previous patrons of Nevin’s with its more affordable price point." - Ashok Selvam

"EVANSTON— Also last Monday, Midnight Pig Tap Room—the self-serve affordably-priced beer concept from those behind the shuttered Tommy Nevin’s Pub—opened doors. The 2,200-square-foot bar offers wiggle room for 125 patrons, in addition to 30 brews on tap and a pubby menu rife with burgers, sandwiches, and nachos." - Ashok Selvam

I'm glad to have a place like this in Evanston. The space has a cool vibe with a combination of high-top, low-top, and couch seating good for small parties and groups. The self-serve beer setup is the same as Tapster in Wicker Park - you receive a card from your server, insert the card in a slot above the taps, then pour as much or little as you want. While it wasn't obvious, tapping the screen also gave the full beer description. Unlike Tapster, there is no front counter to get a card -your server gives you a card once you are seated. The taps were about half Midnight Pig's own with half from other small local breweries, including two ciders. There were no wines or cocktails on draft. Having never tried Midnight Pig, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of their beers. You could grab from a wall of mugs to fill, but I wish there were also taster glasses as an option. Prices per ounce were on par with other Evanston bars, but this is a great deal if you enjoy sampling beers. One negative was the water in the glass rinser tasting off, but I had no problem taking new glasses each time. I enjoyed splitting the classic Nevin's fish and chips, and it was even better than I remember, possibly due to the taproom sharing a kitchen and chef with Pete Miller's.

Cool establishment that could use some entertainment. The beer options were great. Be careful because the self serve option could run your bill up if not paying attention. I went on Valentine's weekend and because the kitchen was slammed they couldn't serve their specific menu. The problem is that it is attached to Pete Millers, which is pricey, and not a great option for food.

We were looking for a pour by the ounce tap room near us and found the Midnight Pig. Lucky find for us! The food was amazing - we had fish and chips perfect for a night of tasting local brews. And that was what made this establishment so amazing, the brews were mainly local to the greater Chicago area verses other taprooms we've been to that have more Midwest regional brews. Definitely coming back.

Great system to allow for choice and tasting many new drinks, and delicious food options. Very friendly waitstaff. If you're lucky, the attached resaurant will have live jazz flowing through the shared interior. If you're unsure about the differences in steaks, this is a good place to ask

Went in once, was slow but a lot of fun so I decided to take my mother in when she was in town, as she also enjoys a good beer. There were maybe five tables but we were intentionally and aggressively ignored for 20 minutes past the 'seat yourselves' intro that we got. It was the oddest thing. Too expensive for what it is, so I will not be returning. Shame, because it is a cool concept. EDIT: I forgot to mention this fact! My husband and a bunch of his friends went there about 30 minutes after we left, thinking we were still there, and the place was much busier due to a game being let out. Regardless, they were talked to, seated, and served menus and waters within their first couple of minutes. Maybe Midnight Pig just thinks women don't enjoy a good bar experience as much as men.

A cool pour your own beer place in Evanston. Be careful the beers can add up real fast. Kitchen is attached to Pete Millers next door, good food but again it is kind of pricey.

Amazing pulled pork nachos, great chicken sandwich. Friend had Mac and Cheese, said it was great. Pour your own beer system, you get charged per ounce. Service was subpar, but food made up for it.

We've had such a good experience in the past, but last night (13 May 2019) was unbelievable. The manager was very kind to us as we walked in with our group, explaining that the taps were down and they were working to address the issue. This didn't dissuade us from staying and we were ready to have a fun night. However, the waitress was awful. She was rude from the moment she approached our table, was voicing her disdain at having to work with THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE BAR on what appeared to be a slow Monday night. We had a lot of international guests who had a few questions about the menu and rather than being helpful or accommodating, her response was a very loud and exhasperated "Oh my God." We got up and left right then, took our group down the street to Evanston Pub who were happy to see us the minute we walked in, and more than happy to split our checks. The 1-star rating is for the manager.
