Marjorie returns with a new location, but the same great food. - Review - Seattle - The Infatuation

"When Marjorie closed its doors on Capitol Hill in 2023, the goodbye party attendance rivaled a 90s boyband farewell tour. It seemed like everyone in Seattle came out to say adieu to this dining institution. Its revival in the Central District, however, has come as a surprise and delight. Marjorie is back with a vengeance, churning out the same level of great dishes and welcoming atmosphere that many remember. Or even better, introducing itself to a whole new crowd. Marjorie’s new location is exactly where you should go for a special, yet approachable, dinner with an updated menu that stays true to the restaurant’s eclectic roots. Each dish here is distinct and a fun mash-up of flavors. We’re talking braised brisket with pink peppercorn dukkah and satsuma vinegar, or hushpuppies that when dipped in an arbol-spiked honey butter create a bite that conjures up warm and tingly feelings of holiday time around a fireplace. Take advantage of their stylish dining room complete with navy blue-hued walls and paintings from local artists. Or reserve a cozy area for when a private birthday party's non-negotiables are mac and cheese and a perfectly tart lemonade. No matter where you sit, the hum of friendly conversations and the ever-changing menu of comfort food already make this feel like a neighborhood mainstay where regulars identify their usual order, secure a favorite table, and plan their next dinner here immediately. Food Rundown photo credit: Kayla Sager-Riley Bread Basket & DIps We recommend going for all three dip options, including a hummus topped with salty bursts of cured black olives and a fluffy goat cheese dip that’s got more air whipped into it than a chiffon cake. photo credit: Kayla Sager-Riley Hushpuppies These sweet and sticky cornmeal balls feel like a rite of passage for any meal here. Our only minor complaint is that some come out a bit darker from the deep fryer than others. But you sort of don’t notice when bits of melty bacon get thrown on top and turn the whole dish up a notch. photo credit: Makena Yee Jerk Chicken We would eat everything on this plate separately, together, upside down—it doesn't matter. The juicy chicken wing cooked in a mouth-warming spicy jerk marinated, the tender coconutty braised greens, and winter squash in a shiny shell of delicate molasses are all perfect on their own or as a harmonious whole. photo credit: Kayla Sager-Riley Mac And Cheese A mix of sharp funky cheeses, springy noodles, and a golden brown top make this mac and cheese something we order on repeat. Is there a pool of butter and oil at the bottom of the dish? Yes. Do we ignore it because the whole thing is delicious? Also, yes. photo credit: Kayla Sager-Riley Mushroom, Chicory, Parm Bread Pudding This savory take on bread pudding is something you can skip. While the top has a nice herby crust, the undercooked center tastes like soggy bread soaked in mushroom broth. Jalapeño-Marinated Maitake Mushroom For a restaurant that does vegetables very well, this sort of misses the mark. The fluffy grits with a jammy egg are tasty, but the maitake mushroom lack depth. If you're vegetarian, stick to ordering sides and appetizers." - Kayla Sager-Riley

Ms. Helen’s Soul Bistro’s Return to 23rd and Union Is No Longer Happening | Eater Seattle

"A recently built development at the corner of 23rd Avenue and Union Street, Midtown Square had been slated to host Ms. Helen’s on its ground floor but the planned restaurant will no longer open there after the developers and operators concluded the 3,000-square-foot space was more than they were willing to take on given the difficulties in raising the additional capital necessary beyond the landlord’s commitment to pay for the build-out." - Harry Cheadle

The Kraken Open 32 Bar & Grill at the Iceplex | Eater Seattle

"Planned at 23rd Avenue and East Union Street in the Central District, Midtown Square will be a mixed-use complex with over 400 housing units, a plaza, and commercial storefronts and is expected to house a handful of mostly BIPOC-owned restaurants and businesses. I noted that popular bar The Neighbor Lady and doughnut shop Raised Doughnuts are moving in, Caribbean restaurant Jerk Shack is opening a second location there, and the development will also be home to Black arts nonprofit Arté Noir, So Beautiful Salon, and another yet-to-be-announced restaurant." - Eater

I have lived a number of places throughout my adulthood and this has by far been the worst living experience I have ever had. Today (12/05/25) alone the fire alarm went off at 6:50am, and later when I went down to the garage I found that my car had been broken into. To be fully fair the new building manager, Brian, was in the garage when I arrived and seemed to be very upset this had happened, but that was about 4hrs ago and I haven't received any follow up. the FEW pros: Conveniently located - grocery stores nearby; route 2 bus goes downtown and stops directly outside building; can get to freeways easily. If you are carless and absolutely need to be centrally located and that is your sole concern then disregard the rest of this review. That being said there are 3 other buildings at this intersection that can achieve this same level of convenience. As a shared space: During the summer the courtyard is nearly always in use for events. This does mean each weekend 10s of strangers may be in the courtyard, some people love that, for me it was difficult. For me, it often meant having to strategically plan how I was going to leave the building to walk my dogs to avoid being catcalled by guests. I have been yelled at trying to pull out of my apartment during an art walk because attendants seemed to believe that no one living in the building could possibly have somewhere else to be. I did speak with the retailer who holds these events and let them know of my frustrations and was told they would work more cohesively with the building for Summer 2026. Everything else: -Management. Again, this is to ensure this review is entirely representative. The building has changed management companies as of the last few weeks so I am unsure what that will do to the building. But in the 16mos I have lived here I have seen the leasing office change personnel probably 3 or 4 times. This is the first time a whole new company has been brought in. The teams that I experienced seemed like they could care less about the building and tenants generally. While the current manager seems much more interested in making this place livable, it did take me over a month to get any sort of contact from the office regarding my intent to vacate. I had to submit my intent three separate ways, and upon receipt of December's rent charges I saw they clearly hadn't seen or acknowledged my letters because they had charged me my full rent. Additionally, in November I was called 5 days before rent was due and told by the office that the office had forgotten to charge me a $300 pet deposit and was now going to add that to my rent. I told them I do not understand how a mistake that they made over 14mos ago was now my responsibility. -As stated in other reviews, the fire alarm goes off constantly, at all hours. It was so bad at one point that I had to stay at my partners place because I couldn't leave my dogs at home while I was at work. -The building is always dirty. I live at the end of one of the buildings, where there is no elevator (a design issue to say the least) so the most convenient exit is a set of stairs. The stairs always smell like pee, human and animal sometimes. I have seen dog poop stay in there for days at a time before. -THE TRASH. It is more common that I would go into the trash room and find the chute was blocked and the room was full of trash and/or recycling, than it was to just go throw trash away. The smell from the chute also permeates the elevator corridor of building A so if you're sensitive to smell tough luck. -Security. In the time I've lived here I have made 4 reports of people sleeping in the stairs, and have consistently seen people within the building who very obviously did not live there. This is even more annoying because the building does not allow residents to have guest fobs for family members or visitors claiming the need for security. There is an emergency exit in the garage that malfunctions constantly and currently is just unlocked which I'm sure is how my car was broken into.

I honestly would not recommend anyone. We did the tour and the home was not ready. We have to get (still not done 2 weeks later) window fixed, transition on the top stair fixed because we do not want to trip and fall into a concrete floor. (We’re in the townhouse) the townhouse was not properly turned and we had to ask them to have the cleaners come back. The cleaning service is a tenant in the building so not a professional service. We also had to get all the toilet seats replaced because they looked like they were washed and dyed in bleach. Window shade cover is missing and the maintenance guy was matter a fact about it, asked if we want a replacement, and were like we’re about to pay over 3k a month Ofcourse we want the house to look the way it’s supposed to look and have everything it comes with. The response was “well it’ll take 3 weeks” I’m like we will be here for 12 months lol we can wait 3 weeks. Also we signed the lease 2 weeks before so they had more than enough time to fix all of this. Experience so far living here after 2 weeks first official weekend here and the buildings alarm woke us up on Saturday morning at 8am (11/15/2025) and went on for 15minutes, stopped and then went on for another 10minutes. Be prepared for amazon drivers to also mess up your deliveries. Also the building kind of has an odor andthe garage smells like a sewer. Yeah (doo doo)! “Management from what I hear is changing” and the people the last couple of days seem to be here just for the day. Lol this might sound exaggerated but it’s not. As I’m listing it out I’m like this is a lot! Also the ice machine they recommended in the building because the refrigerator doesn’t have an ice machine feeder or whatever is disguising I’ll post a picture. I’ll post all the pics. Other than ALL OF THAT. The neighborhood is pretty lively and the food options don’t seem to be bad if you don’t cook at home. Also PCC is right across the street. They wanted an honest feedback about the move in, this is about 80% of it.

Location: Great, but if your facing courtyard, expect loud music every other weekend to come thru your window. Staff: Employee turnover is ridiculous. Only person who is still there is Deedee, who has exceptional customer service. Every month, there is new staff so send emails to keep paper trail. Cost: Expect your rent to increase 15% at renewal, no matter what. Community roots is not a priority, money is. Building: 1 elevators always down.. more than 6 months. Dogs everywhere, expect pee smells!!!! Garage: Price doesn't match the door getting stuck or people taking your spot.

Great place to live, very central, great amenities nearby. The staff is very helpful and pleasant. The other elevator was fixed and all work at the moment. Main drawback of this place is the garbage room smell. The room is right next to the elevator and at certain times of the day is very strong. It would be great if the management team can come up with a plan to mitigate this major problem. I will update to 5* if they do.

My fiancé and I have been living here for a few years. It's had its ups and Downs. Fellow neighbors leave trash around and don't pick up their dog poop. But the groundskeeper Devin does a pretty good job cleaning the building and trash rooms. The area is also nice it has restaurants and a salon and if you have pets, there's a pet store!

I’ve visited a friend here a few times and always get a good impression. The complex is well kept, and the common areas feel clean and quiet. Today they were doing a casual plant baby event in the lobby. It was a small thing, but it gave the place a bit of charm and showed that management puts some thought into community-building. My friend picked up a little succulent that will be going in our windowsill. If I were looking for a place on this side of town, I’d definitely keep it in mind.

TLDR uncontrolled pets pissing/pooping everywhere. I stayed here from July 2022-July 2023. At first the apartment was fine. It took a month to get my dishwasher fixed but whatever. Soon, pets started terrorizing the apartment. Poop in the garage, poop in the elevators, pee in the stairway carpets and the smell doesn't go away no matter how many times they clean. The poop also doesn't go away until some unsuspecting resident drives over it with their car and smears the smell into the pavement. The worst part was my upstairs neighbor who literally let their dog pee all over their balcony. For months, I had pee dripping down my screen door, crystallizing on the glass, and the smell was rancid. It was 80F+ in my apartment and I couldn't open windows/doors bc the smell would permeate everything. I emailed management several times, and I'm sure I wasn't the only neighbor complaining. When I finally got them to address the issue and clean my balcony, they left a pee rag on my rug and my door unlocked (I was on vacation for a week, and reading other reviews about break-ins, I'm glad nothing happened). I had to follow up in person bc they didn't respond to my emails and they assured me the problem was resolved and would not go into detail. I trusted them, but of course the pee came back like a week later. Overall, there are some employees in the leasing office that are trying their best and actually get things done, but most of the staff is incompetent, annoyed when you ask them to do their job, and make fake promises so you stop bothering them. Hopefully they have fixed things since I moved out. 🐕‍🦺💩

Google
TLDR: Do not rent here. Horrible and sketchy. Unsafe and unsanitary. It’s been a while since we’ve moved out of midtown. It was my first apartment out of college so I thought the issues we experienced were normal for a complex. WRONG. Our current place is vastly different. This place is horrible. My car was broken into and defecated inside, units have been shot through, dogs (and humans) leave feces and urine everywhere, fire alarms in the middle of the night, inebriated people threatening residents in the lobby, inebriated residents passed out in the lobby, trash rooms filled to the brim and so much more. Parking garage is just dangerous and scary. You pay $210/month when it’s safer to park on the street. Will never forget walking into the garage stairwell and being greeted with human diarrhea. Management does very little and they’re a hot mess. We loved Lexi, Michaela, and Joseph. Wish they worked elsewhere! They do not deserve to work in such an awful building. Also Thrive has a class action suit against them for price gouging. We were ushered into an overpriced unit that dropped by $300+ the next week. Also, they only have positive reviews from random spam accounts. Our mental and physical health have improved drastically since living here. I cannot believe we thought dealing with this building was normal. Please do not put yourself in a situation like this. overall - I would not live here if I had a chance to go back and change. I would not recommend any of my friends or family to live here. place is pretty, but that’s the only nice thing. some in the leasing office are kind but are the people facilitating these frustrating situations. And yes, these concerns have been brought up to this office but they cannot do much to change anything - but you know, the rooftop and lounge are nice 🙂 They will comment apologies for the experience we had and to reach out. Let’s be honest, they won’t do a thing to change. Hope this health code violation of a building figures out how to improve for the sake of their residents. Quick edit: our move out day a drunk driver crashed into the lobby shattering the windows (last two pics). That was a sign that we made 100% the right decision leaving.

Yelp
Midtown square has glitzy shared spaces and is in a great part of town, but my experience their was quite negative. I decided to move out after multiple fire alarm incideints, including one that went off multiple times throughout the night and forced me and mt kids to leave at 3am to get some sleep. The corporate speak lack of apology about the fire alarms was off putting, as was the lack of any compensation. I have an 8 year old daughter who already struggles with anxiety, these blaring, middle of the night fire alarms happening multiple times was no small matter. My bike was also stolen from the bike room, which actually upset me less than the fact that no one cleaned up the broken locks for over a month. The bike room looks trashy and depressing, with constant reminders that it is unsecure and unimportant. It would be one thing if that was a free amenity, but it is one tenants are expected to pay for. Reimbursing me the cost of bike storage seemed insufficient for having my bike stolen. Lastly, not only was my final month not prorated as dictated by the lease, I was charged for the month after I moved out. The check is supposedly in the mail, but once again, midtown square did not lead with an apology or promise to make sure that such things never happen to other tenants. Don't make the mistake I did, avoid renting at midtown square!

Yelp
Living here has been a nightmare. The constant noise from loud events in the central square, people singing, the blaring garbage truck, and the endless parties in the social spaces make it impossible to rest or sleep properly. This place has caused me so much anxiety, and the management clearly has no regard for the peace and tranquility of its residents. They've shown complete disregard for anyone looking for a quiet and livable space. Don't come to live here, this is hell.

Yelp
This company actually falsified a write up and demanded I sign it or I'm fired. So that's basically what happened because I didn't sign it. Rid of my MHA application, purposely put me on employee housing so when I got fired they hiked my rent back up to market rent and said if I can't pay then get out and kept my commissions and they split it among each other! STRAIGHT TRASH!

Ashley N.

Yelp
Don't move here unless you want to be woken from your sleep at least once a month to false fire alarms. After 2 yrs nothing has changed. Literally counting down the days until I can move out of here! DONT MOVE HERE!!!!!!!! Constant false fire alarms, homeless people sleeping in the stair wells, secured doors broken for almost 2 years (still not fixed), feces in the parking garage (that cost over $200 a month), office staff is a revolving door

Alycia S.

Yelp
This team is amazing. Never have I ever seen such a excellent example of a group of people working so hard for the benefit of my little family! When Lifelong dropped the ball and our housing was at risk, this team (so many were involved it's impossible to point out only one or two employees!) jumped into action. I can honestly say that without their kindness and effort my little family would have gone homeless. You simply can't go wrong when everyone here is working for your good. I've just moved in and I am impressed % Give yourself the opportunity to tour this beautiful apartment complex! Everything is here! Fitness center, multiple elevators, package system, outstanding security, tenant events and more. What are you waiting for?!?! Come check them out!

Yelp
Scheduled a tour for a studio and when I showed up for the tour, there was no answer to the leasing office to let me in. I used the callbox to call the leasing office four times with no answer. I called the phone number I received in the email when scheduling the tour, and the leasing manager walks to the front door to let me in. She was very obviously ignoring the calls from the callbox. Why let people schedule tours if you don't want to answer the door at the time of the appointment? Bad management vibes immediately, definitely not a place I would trust to live.
