Mikado Ryotei - Review - North Burnet - Austin - The Infatuation

"Mikado Ryotei on Research Blvd in North Burnet is a sushi restaurant that hits right in the center of the Venn diagram of affordable, fast, and quality (usually you only get to pick two when it comes to sushi). The sushi is neither comically large nor ridiculously small, and there’s also a good sake list. We recommend the Mikado Combo." - Raphael Brion

Google
We loved the shangri la roll. The flavors of the different fishes were so beautifully layered. The angels whisper had some spice to it, but it was good. It would have been my favorite had I not had the Shangri roll. The restaurant was cozy and had a great ambience with soft music playing. Our server was very quick and accommodating. Highly recommend

Was so great meeting up with good friends and coworkers at our traditional “off-site”. Highly recommend Mikado on Research. Excellent sushi, great vibes, play list and superb staff and bar! Bonus parking is easy. Check it out!

Google
Mikado -- amazing, a class above! Ordered the 'miso sea bass' and a Crouching Tiger roll, miso, escolar nigiri (ish), had some sake -- all were a delight, and the service was great. It happened to be a relatively cold evening so we made a point to order some warmer items, the server noticed this and was very accommodating. Pricing is very fair especially considering the quality of the dishes. Happened to meet the owner and he was great, too. Thanks Mark. Will definitely recommend and be back! 😀

Google
Nice cozy sushi place. Their chirashi bowl is really solid, at least 7 different types of fish, all of which tasted really fresh, and it was the perfect sized portion IMO! My partner got the tiger eye roll which was too spicy for me to try, but he enjoyed it. The chirashi bowl also came with a miso soup, which was fine. Will be back again to try more!

My family and I recently visited Mikado for dinner, and we were greeted by two friendly gentlemen who showed us to our seats. As the only customers at that moment, we had their undivided attention. After we received our menus and glasses of water, we were ready to order. However, the waiters were also busy attending to takeout and phone orders, which slowed down the service. We had our kids with us who needed to be entertained, so we asked for the wifi password, which the staff kindly provided. Despite the wait, the food at Mikado was definitely worth it. We ordered the shrimp tempura and vegetable tempura, and they were both delicious! The tempura batter was light and crispy, and the shrimps and vegetables were cooked to perfection. Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Mikado, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Japanese cuisine in the area. The only downside was the slight delay in service, but the food was definitely worth it. We will definitely be back!

Google
I haven't been to Mikado since 2021. We decided to go recently and I wasn't disappointed but I also wasn't thrilled. First of all, the Sunday happy hour doesn't exist anymore. Also, the menu has gotten much shorter and cleaner - I guess that's a good thing but I must say, the previous menu was very elegant and had some great choices. MUST HAVE --> Spicy garlic edamame and hamachi chili/crudo. Both were really excellent. The edamame was enough to almost fill me up without paying a bunch of money. The crudo was really fresh and light -- I like the pop of slight spiciness from the small peppers. EH (don't worry if you miss these) --> 16 piece sashimi platter and Kanpachi sashimi. I've recently had sashimi at Tatsumi, TenTen, and Uchiko -- this doesn't compare at all. The sashimi is clean and fresh, which is great but there's no creativity. It's straight fish. So if you're looking for straight-up fish, this will suit you well. The Kanpachi sashimi was a special for the day. The texture was weird. The fish didn't have the "bite" of fresh fish. It was gummy and even stuck to the roof of my mouth. I'm not sure if this is the typical texture but I wouldn't order this again. I hope Mikado gets a makeover or gets more customers. I think they have potential but the space is starting to look more like a storage facility. When you first walk in, it's a bunch of plants in the corner and knickknacks around the hostess stand. It's not a good first impression.

Google
I had an amazing experience at Mikado. The service was impeccable—attentive, friendly, and welcoming throughout my entire visit. The food was absolutely delicious, with fresh, beautifully presented sushi that exceeded my expectations. To top it all off, the staff surprised me with a complimentary slice of cake for my birthday, which was such a thoughtful and kind gesture. This place truly goes above and beyond to make their customers feel special. I can't wait to return!

Google
Fresh fish. Quick service. Comfy booth. Hottie Susan roll wasn't that spicy, rather tame actually,. Liked the riceless option of Austin roll. Cheesecake looked great and not heavy.

Yelp
This place is a gem. I come here almost every weekend and love the quality of the food, service, and ambiance. Just so calm and nice for a casual date night with delicious sushi.

Yelp
Our old favorite place closed down so we decided to try this sushi place. We recently ordered takeout from here. The sushi fish quality ranged from slightly fishy to good. The rice however that I ordered on the size was disgusting and I had to spit it out. I'm not sure what happened but it was like they took rice, poured water into it until it was a little too soupy, and then let it sit for days on the counter. Unfortunately this lack of quality assurance really ruined the meal for me. My partner who picked up the food also noticed that although the inside of the place was cute, it smelled strongly of cleaning product mixed with a fishy smell. Can't say this will be our new go to...

Yelp
Things we REALLY enjoyed: - Our waiter. He had such a warm, funny, friendly personality. He was honest about the menu items and what he thought were top notch (many, of which we chose) and was very attentive to our needs whilst being the only server on the floor. We even stayed late to chat with him after our dinner because he was a great conversationalist. He was fun. -The Fatty Salmon Nigiri. Holy crud, this was so good it literally felt like it was melting in our mouths. They had a SOLID cut of this and I recommend trying it out. - The Crouching Tiger & Yoshi Roll. Both the fish in these rolls were extremely fresh and the roll itself was compact and clean. We really enjoyed these two rolls to share. - The ambience. It was dim, lots of little details and decore to look at, and we got a booth, which was great! Things that were "meh": - Fried Calamari app. Eh... I mean, I think the squid was probably okay but the batter was fairly thick. The sauce that came with it was good. - The Lychee Martini. I LOVE lychee and I almost always get it if it's on the menu. While it tasted fine, they lacked serving the actual lychee along with the alcohol. I was really saddened by this and think of it as almost a requirement for this martini. It would be like serving a dirty martini without the olive. Le sigh. - The finish on the table. Not sure if this is an easy fix, but our table was soooo sticky. I believe it was wiped down properly, maybe just some weird finish that made it sticky?? It was a minor annoyance but needed to put it out there.

Yelp
I got the worst food poisoning I've ever had from Mikado this weekend. It was the only thing I ate on Friday and I spent the entire weekend in the bathroom. It's now Sunday and I'm only just now well enough to write this review. Agonizing experience. Huge bummer because the reviews were great and I was really excited to try a new spot. What I ordered: Garlic Edamame Madai Nigiri Fatty Tuna Nigiri Choroshi's Fire

Yelp
Good sushi spot. Not my top 5, but still good. Nice and quiet and good ambiance inside The sushi rolls were really good. The sushi nigiri was also good. The only thing is that the nigiri salmon was said to be wild, but I highly doubt it was as I have had a lot of wild salmon and it just didn't taste the same. Would check this place out if you are looking for good mid priced sushi

Yelp
Highly recommend this place! Sashimi is really fresh, no fishy odor. Service is outstanding. Staff are attentive, courteous, and very professional. They gave us free miso soup and complimentary margarita when moscow mule was not available. Margarita was really good, which I found surprising for a Japanese restaurant. Ambiance is clean, minimalistic, spacious, peaceful. Great place to eat lunch/dinner with friends, coworkers, and family.

Yelp
One of the most solid sushi places in Austin that I tried so far. I had the spider roll, Teresa, dejavú and el dorado. My favorites had to be Teresa and el dorado. Definitely will be trying more sushi from this place.

Yelp
Always always always always always always deliver and on point at Mikado Ryand Hokkaido Scallops Nigiri and Salmon Nigiri, austin roll, caterpillar roll, mikado roll, garlic edamame (requested nonspicy), hottie Susan, and chorishis fire roll. They have the best salmon nigiri and the fish still melts in your mouth! My favorite restaurant and the waiter employee Nelson is always so kind to us! I have nothing but good things to say about Mikado! I've been going her for years and recommend everyone I know because their sushi is amazing !

Yelp
Unprofessional. When a DoorDash driver calls DoorDash to ensure the food is ready while on the way to the restaurant, thats none of any of y'all's business. A DoorDash driver doesn't have to waste time waiting at the restaurant nor do they owe you an explanation as to why they wanted to make sure the food is ready upon arrival. Guess he was salty there's no tip for him, but that's Mark and Jenny's problem, not the doordash driver. Go take it out on someone else! Also this restaurant will blame their employees for their pos POS (piece of shit/point of service) system messing up. Waiters don't see their checks which is normal but the the owner also tells his waiters to pay 3% of the total sales every night for "tax" reasons. Somehow the waiters will still end up owing money which doesn't make sense. When confronted he says it's because we make too much, that's pretty shady and cheap for someone that acts like they're too good to sell conventional asian dishes because it's not "boujee" enough. Try and delete my review again. Next time I'll reveal something worse. You could just apologize you know?

Yelp
Service at Mikado is outstanding and the variety of choices make this place one of my favorites. Mikado is an old local institution here in Austin and one that deserves our support. I wish they could do some renovations to their facilities

Yelp
What happened to this place? It used to be SO GOOD! The last time I was here, before my recent visit, was probably around 12-13 years ago when the super white tuna was plump, fresh, and would overhang on a little lump of rice-- how a perfect piece of nigiri should be. This time it was tough, tiny, and honestly, I was so sad. I have no idea what went down through these years, but it must have been some shit, because the sushi tasted like it's been sitting there for weeks. Used to think so highly of this place, but damn, it has gone downhill to the max. Is it the economy? Are we skimping on fresh fish? --keeping it longer than advised? Ugh. Ambience is still ok and service is acceptable, but sadly, I likely won't be back.

Yelp
Great sushi place I'm Austin. Nigeria sushi was cut pretty thick and the service I received was really great. Plenty of sushi roll options and the appetizers were great. It's hard to find good sushi restaurants, but this place is worth trying out!

Yelp
I wrote my first review for Mikado Ryotei when covid first started. Now that I'm vaccinated and thriving, it was only time before I returned to try it out in person. As noted before, Mikado Ryotei is one of the few places that you can actually Uber/Doordash and your food is STILL amazing. In person, you might just die or cry from happiness. We ordered the Love Boat for Two (yes, actually comes in a wooden boat!), which serves chef's choice of an assortment of nigiri & sashimi, and your pick of 2 of their specialty rolls listed. We chose the Angel's Whisper and the Kyoto. The Angel's Whisper comes with spicy salmon and chopped jalapeños, topped with blue fin tuna, cilantro sauce and pepper. The Kyoto (another spicy fave) is similar to the Angel's Whisper in ingredients, but far from it in taste. The Kyoto is stuffed with spicy salmon and jalapeños, topped with tuna, avocado, crunchy flakes, and spicy mayo. Though the Kyoto and Angel's Whisper was heavenly, it was the Hottie Susan and Crouching Tiger that stole the show. The Hottie Susan has tuna and cucumbers inside, with salmon, avocado and spicy mayo on top. The Crouching Tiger has PEPPERED tuna, jalapeños and cucumbers in it's interior, and topped with salmon, esocolar, avocado, roasted garlic, chopped scallions and ponzu sauce for it's exterior. No matter what you order, you won't regret it!

Yelp
Tried this place on a late Sunday evening. It's set a little off the frontage road tucked in a small shopping complex area. Service was quick, friendly, and top notch. We tried three sushi rolls off the menu, Kyoto, Big n Easy and Hottie Susan. All of them had spicy elements according to the menu. They were good rolls, I personally would've liked a bit more spice behind the bites but overall delicious rolls. I would happily try this place again to check out other menu items. Prices are comparable to many other sushi places in town and it's a great quaint spot to check out.

Yelp
nigiri is solid mid/high mid tempura was absolute garbage trash though in what world would their small ass shrimp be "jumbo", i dont know batter laid on so thick for that much tempura they were pretty stingy with the tempura sauce doesn't matter though, so GREASY drenched in oil has to toss it. waste if money $99 for all pictured + the spicy hamachi crudo which is not pictured the tempura was seriously garbage but everything else was solid

Yelp
Food is always delicious here! Service is amazing, the staff goes the extra mile to make sure you feel at home. The waiter and chefs are always joking. It is very calm space with eclectic art.

Yelp
Great food and very friendly service. I miss the days when they had local beers on tap, but otherwise I've been enjoying this restaurant for many, many years

Yelp
Came here yesterday (Saturday night) with a fairly large group. It was spur of the moment and we had been turned down by two other packed sushi spots for walk in. With that being said, it was very nice of them to take our group! They were clearly very understaffed. We waited about 10 minutes at the host desk with a very long line behind us. It looked like there was maybe only two waiters in the entire establishment. This isn't meant as a knock on them, our group was patient and definitely appreciated them taking us even more. The waiter was kind and apologetic. It was obvious he was doing the best he could to remember multiple orders in a timely manner. The restaurant itself had low lighting and was slightly on the fancier side. Not so fancy that you couldn't go causally, but it was nice. Despite the wait, the food was very good! I ordered the Mikado Combo Dinner which had a nice layout of sashimi, nigiri and your choice of speciality roll. I picked the Shaggy Dog, which had tempura shrimp, avocado and crab stick with a generous amount of spicy Mayo and crunchy's on top! The fish was very fresh and everything tasted great. We had Crab Puffs that came out crunchy, tasty and very hot. Overall, I would return since the food was good. I am super curious to see how they function as a fully staffed restaurant.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Everything was delicious and the waiters were nice and professional. All was so clean and I loved all the plants. We'll come back!

Yelp
I used to go here almost 10 years ago, and let me tel you this place still stands! Fantastic sushi. Super fresh, amazing service, will be coming again. We got the Chiroshis Fire, Mikado Roll, and the Kyoto roll.

Yelp
Absolutely spectacular & fresh sushi in Austin! My family has been coming here for longer than I can remember and I'm so grateful that this amazing restaurant survived the pandemic. Please support this fantastic business as they have the sweetest owner, Mark, & staff members as well as some of the best sushi you can get!!!! 11/10

Yelp
This place is a diamond in the rough. It's half a mile from my house and somehow I never even noticed it, buried in a strip mall on the corner of 183 and Burnet. I started with a miso soup, which for me is almost always a good barometer of a Japanese restaurant, and it was delicious. Followed with a ruby ahi tower, hamachi chili, and a hottie susan roll. Taste, freshness, and presentation were all on point. Great service too!
google avatar

Yelp
Great hidden gem for happy hour in Austin! Came due to the good Yelp reviews&we loved it. Prices (and portions!) are great during happy hour. Sushi is always fresh and delicious! If you're looking for a drink, try the Lychee Sake. Its refreshing and light with floral fruity notes and pairs well with sushi. Parking is a breeze (huge lot) & it's never crowded. Staff is always attentive and friendly. If you don't feel like waiting long lines for Uchi, Uchiko, Kome, or want something cheaper but still good quality, try this place.
google avatar

Alyssa D.

Yelp
I don't like seafood, technically... So you'd think I wouldn't like this place. But that seaweed salad is AMAZING and the Katsu chicken is so good.
google avatar

Suji P.

Yelp
This place rocks. Not only the food is top quality and artistic but the service is incredible. Thank you for being there for us while we are going through the tough time. Jenny is the owner and she was serving all tables since she was having hard time to find servers these days. Sorry that you have to go through this but we are so happy to meet you and serve us.
google avatar

Quyen B.

Yelp
Decent sushi for the neighborhood. I usually order lunch takeout, 2 or 3 roll special, good deal for 3 rolls( $15) with miso soup. They are not as packed during lunch hours as far as I can tell when I'm picking up my order. I've been here for dinner years ago, I can't remember how the food tasted as far as entrees. Not a bad location, no issue with parking.
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
This place is great and never crowded. They make a fabulous Lychee Martini and everyone is so nice.
google avatar

Maribel R.

Yelp
Fish was rotten , smelly and inedible. Plate looked like it had fallen on the floor. Rolls were soggy and rice was gooey. Ordered spicy Susan and crouching tiger roll. Could not eat in fear of food poisoning. Highly dissatisfied in my order. Food quality of these rolls is unacceptable and a waste of my money
google avatar

Esther S.

Yelp
Came here for a reverse happy hour and didn't even realize that I had walked in on RHH! First of all, so value $$$ for the quality of food you are getting and the service is alwaYs good! They even gave us a free tempura ice cream when we told them it was my friends bday and WOW it's good, the tempura is crispy and warm while the ice cream is cold and sweet. Not your typical soggy tempura ice cream!!
google avatar

Ashley E.

Yelp
Great quality sushi. I got the Shaggy Dog and loved it! Also have happy hour- isn't huge discounts but it's something! Will be coming back to try their other rolls soon!

Yelp
Loved my dinner experience here at Mikado Ryotei. Our group of 4 came here around 6 pm on a Wednesday night and the place was still fairly empty at that time so we were seated right away. To start off, we decided to get some apps for the table - calamari, tempura shrimp, and bacon wrapped scallops. The scallops only come 2 per plate so make sure to order more if everyone at the table would like a piece. For our mains, while the rest of the table shared several rolls, I decided to go with the seafood udon. When they rolls came out, the first thing I noticed was how beautiful they all were. One of the rolls they ordered was the flaming dragon which comes out wrapped up in aluminum foil and lit on fire. The udon came out in it's own mini iron pot with a lid on it, the latter of which came in handy for my discarded shells. Everything was fresh and tasted fantastic. They also have a decent selection of beer, wine and sake to pair with your meal. Overall, had a great time here and would highly recommend others to check out this place for a nice meal.

Yelp
Honestly such great sushi. The angel whisper is my favorite. We get it on Uber eats frequently and they always come through. Love this place so much.

Yelp
I loved it! Every bite! The portions were good and the Japanese Yakitori was bomb, especially the chicken thigh!

Yelp
My wife and I stopped by for our anniversary and decided to steer away from the sushi/sashimi we usually get and decided to go hot for a change. For the appetizer, we had the fried crab puffs. They were fresh and crisp with more crab than cream cheese. Also, it was real crab. Although these are common appetizers, we found them very tasty. Our next foray was the Fried Soft Shell Crab. It was the best I've had in Austin. It was fresh, larger than most of the other offerings in town, and resplendent with sauteed onions and shallots. Just scrumptious. The fry job was awesome as well. Fresh oil and unburned. Next we had the Fire Dragon Roll which is prepared hot at your table with tempura shrimp inside and eel/salmon decked on top. Oh MY!!! Was so good. Cannot recommend enough. For our last course we had the Miso Sea Bass. Where to start? First of all the fish was FRESH. Big plus. Flaky and tender with an amazing flavor. Just delicious and so pleasing. We'd mentioned that it was our anniversary, so we were treated to Tiramisu and Gnocchi Ice Cream balls for dessert at no charge. We've been customers here for about 20 years now. Here's to 20 more!
google avatar

Serafina S.

Yelp
Totally a hidden gem! Great sushi, miso, and appetizers, and it's a pretty good price for sushi too. Has a laid back ambience and super friendly staff, definitely recommend to anyone looking for a high quality sushi place that isn't overly expensive or frilly.
google avatar

Jake H.

Yelp
Sushi here was pretty good. I got a spicy tuna roll and a rock 'n roll piece as well. At lunch the prices are reasonable at $13 for two rolls. If I eat here again, I'd get it to go as there was an unpleasant smell at the entrance. Also, we had to wait a good amount of time for our lunch and we were there before the lunch rush.
google avatar

M P.

Yelp
My bestie and I have been going to Mikado for dinner for years. Maybe 10+. Under Mark's leadership I find it to be one of the best restaurants in Austin. Sushi is fresh, drinks are top quality and made with care, and the service is great!
google avatar

Benjamin S.

Yelp
I ordered for takeout via UberEats at 6:30pm today. I got a call from the driver at 7:30 picking up my order- he said that they let him know it would be 40 minutes before the order was ready. I'm not sure why it would take 100 minutes to make two rolls of sushi; the Uber driver was really polite and went back to ask if there was a mistake, and the hostess ignored him/wouldn't make eye contact. Kinda frustrating to order rolls for Valentine's Day and wait an hour, then hear how they treated the delivery driver. Note: this review was adjusted from 1 star to 5 stars. I get that businesses have off days/get backed up in orders, but I'll leave the feedback^ here for the restaurant to see.
google avatar

Nelson L.

Yelp
Good food. I love the salmon. It is always so fresh. The hot kitchen food is great. Steak is the best.
google avatar

Oliver M.

Yelp
Great spot for sushi happy hour. Tons of rolls and apps to choose from. The grilled octopus was super tender, not chewy or rubbery at all, and the agedashi tofu was nice and crispy too. The rolls were pretty good, but the spicy ones could use some work on the sauces...I'd like something that doesn't just taste like toned down sriracha. The nigiri we got was also good. The yellowtail was meh but the NZ King salmon was amazing. You can definitely taste the difference from regular salmon. Service was friendly, but a lot of the staff's behind-closed-doors talk bled into the dining room. Try to keep the dining room experience focused on the customer, not the technicalities of your job. Still five starts though because of the great happy hour!
google avatar

Sandy G.

Yelp
This place is great! Tasty food and amazing customer service! Was in the area after a hair appointment and ordered just the crunchy roll to go. It was only $7 and beyond worth it!

Yelp
Our visit here started off a bit awkwardly but it was a good experience. The restaurant is stunning so the ambiance is very nice, a good date place. Several people acknowledged us but did not seat us, so we stood at the front for a bit though the restaurant was mostly empty. We finally were seated at the sushi bar (our request). It turns out the host is from Kansas so that was random! We were taken care of by sushi chefs Robert and Jose. Eric R. and I got hot green tea and talked our server into letting us have the pot instead of waiting for refills. We first shared chirashi which came with 18 pieces of sashimi over rice that was garnished with masago. The quality was very good and we enjoyed the variety, which included both hamachi and kanpachi. Eric R. was quite full from his half, but I wanted to try saba nigiri (my test for a good sushi bar) and a salmon skin handroll. The saba came out quickly and was very tasty. It was garnished with fried garlic which was a bit unusual. The salmon skin handroll was well-stuffed and came with avocado and gobo. Eric R. wanted a bite which wiped out my avocado, and Chef Jose took the half-eaten handroll back and stuffed more avocado in it - wow! Eric R. decided to order Hokkaido scallop to finish, and shared a bite with me. Chef Jose carved a bear out of an orange and presented it to us as a finale. Both chefs were fun to chat with which is why I like sitting at the bar. I also was very intrigued by silver engraved plaques lining the sushi bar which are regulars' names! I also joked that I had "my seat" at my favorite sushi bar in Vegas when I lived there, but I never thought I could see my name on a spot anywhere, so this is very clever. I will return!

Yelp
Service - 0/5 Came with a friend for happy hour on a Wednesday, it wasn't busy at all maybe 4 tables already seated. It looks about 3 mins to get seated and the host/waitress only gave us 1 menu and 2 happy hour menus... never came back so I could ask for another one. We could tell the waitress was new, but she was clueless...not able to answer any of our questions regarding what was in the rolls. She couldn't even pronounce the menu items when she was trying to repeat our ordered back to us. -_- I asked if they had uni and she no idea and said she would go ask the chef. She comes back and noted it was whatever was listed on the special board. From where we were sitting (across the restaurant from this board) it was clear I wasn't able to see read it. We awkwardly waited for her to tell us/read the board off for us...or tell us what the chef said when she left to go ask him...but it was obvious that was not happening so I got up to go read it myself. We waited an hour till she came back and the waitress was shocked that we didn't get any of our food yet. She literally asked, "Y'all haven't gotten anything you ordered yet?!" [enter awkward stare] we replied back....yes...your our waitress...you never brought out our food....waited another 10-15 mins and our food finally came. She did come back to check on us after we started to eat. She also asked me if I "still" wanted my soup and salads that came with my meal.... [insert another awkward pause] since it seemed like she expected me to say no.... Lastly, she brought our check which she split for us which was nice, then someone else took it and she came back to ask again if we were ready for our checks again... she literally forgot she brought out our checks no more than 5 mins ago. It was still not busy in the restaurant yet. I never had worst service in my life. Honestly felt like she never been to a restaurant herself and didn't understand how the whole customer/waitress interaction worked. Beside looking confused and lost half the time she couldn't remember anything, bless her hart for trying but she needs to learn quick or find a new job. Food 2/5 First off, I like to note I grew up in Los Angles and had some amazing sushi and would like to think I am pretty good judge of sushi. I never order rolls and mainly order Nigiri or Sashimi only. Since we made it in time for happy hour, we ordered the following: Shaggy Dog Roll - cooked roll Crunchy Roll - cooked roll Hottie Susan - raw roll - All the rolls listed above were very one dimensional in flavor. All covered in spicy mayo or eel sauce - All have over cooked rice Spicy Tuna roll - raw roll Traditional spicy tuna rolls do not come out with spicy mayo...enough said. Chirashi Bowl - chef selected sashimi over sushi rice The fish was cut into good portions, that was the only upside. Every had a strong fishy flavor, and I knew it wasn't fresh and you could tell they were all recently frozen by the texture of the fish...overall very disappointing and left with regret The sushi rice was overcooked and mushy and under seasoned Overall it was the worst sushi experience I had, and I will honestly not be coming back. The price are decent but if you're looking for quality fresh sashimi this is not the place for you. I think the cooked rolls were just above passing. Honestly, at $10 for a cooked roll you can get the same quality out of the HEB sushi deli.

Yelp
I am in love with this place, so much so that I'll come here 2-3x/week no hesitation. Service is ALWAYS friendly. Happy hour menu is one of my favorites. It's not dirt cheap, so don't come here expecting low low prices. But I they offer a lot: sushi, rolls, drinks, and appetizers! Overall, I'm a huge fan of the tempura shrimp udon, agedashi tofu, chicken karaage(squeeze some limes on it), and most importantly: SPICY SCALLOP HANDROLL. The sushi never disappoints. The place has always looked clean and inviting. + all day happy hour on Sundays w/ reverse happy hour on Fridays and Saturdays. Just take my $$ already.

Yelp
Bottom line: the fish did not taste fresh. I tried the rainbow roll, the angel's whisper, and the yellowtail scallion roll, and none of them tasted fresh. The rolls were also kinda small (in comparison to what you'd find at other places), so it felt extra bad. I usually don't like over-dipping my sushi in soy sauce, but I felt like I had to a little for the sushi here just because (once again) the fish did not taste fresh! Honestly felt a little sick after forcing myself to finish everything (3 rolls for me usually is nothing). Can't recommend and won't be back.

Yelp
I really want more good sushi near me. Unfortunately this place has a lot of work to do. positives: the salmon nigiri was very good negatives we walked in on a friday afternnoon soon after opening and the place stank of harsh cleaning products terrible country music, not compatible with sushi experience cooks arguing in kitchen not amenable to dining experience gyoza sauce was overly sweet with nondescript flavor table was very sticky tuna nigiri was not great, very mealy. overall decor was ok, but a bit underlit/dark

Yelp
So much potential but Mikado keeps disappointing in one way or another, so 3 stars is generous IMO. I just love the decor, music, and ambiance in general here. I also love that this is the home to the first restaurant I frequented upon moving to Austin - Pearl's Oyster Bar. The presentation is delightful. Usually. Consistency is a serious problem here: service is sometimes wonderful and other times barely existent (and it's obvious the waiter/waitress does not want to be here), food can be served one time with certain toppings/sauces/ingredients and the same exact dish in the same seating will be served without it, food is sometimes fresh and sometimes not so much, and sadly you really have to watch your bill here ... on more than one occasion not only have I been overcharged for something but I've been charged for things I did not even order (lucky for them I didn't notice until after I left). I would go here a lot more if the above inconsistencies were fixed, but I'm getting to where I avoid going here because it's just not worth taking the chance when there are other options. I mean that happy hour is hard to beat, but there's not much happy about it when you see you were charged more for something you specifically asked about, and then you have a surprise eel dish added to your tab - that you never asked for, saw, or ate - to top it off. Think I'll gladly be handing over my Duchess of Mikado crown ...
