It sure was a BIG DEAL when Mike's announced it was coming to Tigard. After a very rocky start -staff training and supply issues- it seems things have quieted down and the place is humming along as it should. The lines are still there but not as bad. And I sure hope the reviews get better!!!
We didn't have any issues with the wait time or customer service. Just one little hiccup: we ordered and paid by phone to do curbside pickup. When we arrived, we phoned to tell them we were in the pickup spot. The young man who answered said we had to come in and pay and then they'd bring our order out. This made absolutely no sense since we had already paid and the whole idea of "curbside pickup" was to avoid having to go inside. Fortunately, he put us on a quick hold to get some clarification. When he came back on, he confirmed that we didn't have to come inside and that our food was on its way out to our car. Whew, tantrum avoided!!!
We ordered the pastrami sandwiches as they were specials at the time and in limited supply. I chose the Pastrami Melt ($9.50): thin sliced pastrami, Swiss cheese, 2 slices of tomato and mayo on grilled sourdough. Overall good flavor, a little too smoky for my taste but nice and lean with an excellent meat-to-bread ratio. I wish it had come with lettuce, pickles, and onions (I found out later you can request these items) and a little less mayo. My husband got the Pastrami Reuben ($9.50): thin sliced pastrami, Swiss cheese, topped with sauerkraut and special sauce on grilled rye bread. We both ordered the onion rings but they weren't exactly the ideal choice for getting home hot (or even warm) and sadly, they were cold by the time we got them home. Not Mike's fault. They are batter-fried and I prefer the breaded version anyway. We also chose to make our orders "baskets." For an additional $4.95 it included a 20 oz drink and a 2 ounce container of cole slaw, potato salad, or a cookie. The cole slaw was good if you like yours on the sweet side with lots of mayo. I'd try the potato salad next time.
The menu includes burgers (of course), fish & chicken sandwiches, fries, tater tots, batter-fried mushrooms, clam strips, etc., and a very nice kids menu. Dessert is covered too. You can get a soft-serve for 99 cents all day long! They have various flavors of old-fashioned ice cream and waffle cones, sundaes and parfaits available. I'd definitely give Mike's another try.
