The Best Restaurants in East Boston

"There are two Italian delis on this East Boston guide because we love chicken parm sandwiches, and also because the ones at Milano’s are really good. In particular, the chicken napolitano - a chicken cutlet sandwich topped with prosciutto, red peppers, and mozzarella - is so much greater than the sum of its parts. You can also pre-order your meal for takeout, so you’ll never have to settle for a sh*tty in-flight sub again." - joel ang

Milano’s Delicatessen - Review - East Boston - Boston - The Infatuation

"There are a number of Italian delis in East Boston, but Milano’s is easily the best. Almost everyone gets their order to-go, but you also have the option to sit at one of the few tables here. The chicken napolitano - a chicken cutlet sandwich topped with prosciutto, red peppers, and mozzarella - is a great option, but you can’t go wrong with any other sandwich either. This place also has excellent arancini, if you’re feeling particularly hungry. Even if you’re not, you should order one anyway." - Joel Ang

Authentic. Delicious. Friendly. Their bakery pizza is sublime. The cappuccino was perfectly made. The chicken salad was spectacular. The veggie breakfast burrito ‘Veggie Bomb’ was beyond words good. AND the impeccable service made everything that much better. There is so much there to try, the menu is huge and filled with all manner of deliciousness.

TheSotoStandard Review : We were looking for a solid Breakfast spot in east boston , to replace our usual which was Angelas. We were pleasantly surprised by Milanos Breakfast. The lady welcomed us in and made sure we got exactly what we wanted and made sure to prioritize us and whatever we needed. We got 2 Egg Bomb Omelets , I got a side of Steak tips medium cooked and my girlfriend got home fries and a bagel. We were shocked to say the least , really great breakfast and for 40$ less we got a better meal, than we would have if we went to their neighbor Angela’s. So as far as cons, the place is rather small and you cant really invite more than a few people , but this place is great if you’re looking for a nice chill intimate atmosphere. So 5 star for sure.

Google
Oh my lord, this place is unreal. Best Italian sub I have EVER had in my 37 year lifetime. Don't pass up your chance to eat at this place if you are passing through. I'll say it again, OH MY LORD! I'll be back here EVERYTIME I want ANYTHING Italian! Cancelling my trip to Italy because I was just there 10 minutes ago. Enjoy

Google
This was the best pizza!! OMG. Perfect thin crust, white pizza with garlic and spinach. And as soon as I walked in, the fabulous smell of garlic and I KNEW this would be absolutely awesome. It was.

I was in the North End, not exactly finding any place I wanted to eat lunch at. So I did some research and found Milano's up in East Boston. My advice? Skip anything in the North End, and just come here. I had the Italian Sub Grande with six, count 'em, six layers of toppings. More imported cold cuts than I can name, provolone and mozzarella cheese, herbs, peppers, onions... So much that it doesn't fit in the ciabatta roll it's served on. Which brings me to the ingredients of the sandwich. Every ingredient on that sandwich was the absolute best you can find. The meats, cheeses, and vegetables were all flavorful and fresh. The bread was incredible, chewy and soft. I ordered the Italian style fries which were, like the sandwich, delicious. They're covered with flavorful herbs, garlic, and parmesan. Hot, crispy, great flavors. The service was friendly and fast. Prices are a bit on the high side (about $11 for the small sandwich, about $6 for the fries) but hey, first of all -- it's some of the best food I've had in a long time, and second, that was enough food that I couldn't even eat dinner after having this for lunch, and I am a three meal a day kind of guy. Bottom line, this deli is more than worth it. If I am ever in this area hungry again -- which I probably will be -- you can bet I'll be stopping here again, and I couldn't recommend strongly enough that you do too.

Google
While visiting Boston I was looking for a good Italian sammie. After reading lots of reviews, I settled on Milano's and I'm glad I did! The staff was fantastic, as a chatty midwesterner I always want to talk, but the people of Boston do not. Once they found out I was from out of town they wanted to give me all the food advice, and were absolutely the sweetest. I had the Italian Grande, the Arancini, and a ricotta canoli. The sandwich was probably the best Italian sammie I've ever had, and I think my favorite meal in Boston overall. Just sad I didn't get to grab a sandwich on my way out of town.

Google
I can’t believe I lived so close to this place for two years and am just going now! Their Italian Cold Cut sandwich is really good! It has a lot of meat and great bread. It’s an excellent deal for 14 bucks.

Google
Check out the chicken wraps there good . I also. Got a meatball and I wasn't to happy the price doesn't match the product . The steak fries is a must there so good

Yelp
This is my go to spot for the best eggplant parm subs! We usually also get the Italian style square pizza and the chef always adds some extra sauce for us, absolutely delicious! This a great spot for lunch and makes for great leftovers as well. Meatball sub is also a home run!

Yelp
If you have an infatuation for Italian classics look no further. Milano's is embedded in the East Boston community serving up generously sized portions. From wings, salads, cold subs and more to their legendary chicken parm's they have what you're looking for. I would recommend going on an empty stomach and with a friend to fill up on their hearty meals. The owner is amazing too. Thank me later, follow me now, stay eatin' bruh!

Yelp
What a hidden gem! I've been to Milano's twice now and really enjoyed both times. Service is friendly, and they make the food very fresh. They also have an online order portal, which you get 10% off (only con is there's an order minimum for card; otherwise, cash only). I ordered an eggplant parmesan sandwich both times and it was super yummy. The "small" is a huge portion and plenty enough for lunch. Also, their cannolis are actually better than the ones I've had in the North End (Mike's & Modern); they taste more dessert-y than savory/cheesy. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Get the veggie bomb as an omelette. Best omelette I've ever had! Also the home fries are amazing. Crispy, great flavor, no ketchup or hot sauce needed. The ladies behind the counter are awesome. Highly recommend!

Yelp
If you are looking for OG old school Italian food this is the place. Milanos has been a staple in Orient Heights and they NEVER disappoint. It's family run and operated, they are super nice and after so many years still care greatly about the food and service they provide. I usually grab -Eggplant Parmesan Sub (Small is plenty) -Bakery Pizza (It's square pizza that's majority sauce with some parmesan sprinkled on top). -Arancini This place is mostly grab and go but they have expanded their seating area. However it's still a squeeze. Price wise this is very affordable and their online ordering system works fabulously--they do cash or card on the system to. If you think you know Italian food think again, Milanos is a must.

Carly M.

Yelp
Okay I'm sorry but the sandwich I got was severely overpriced. I ordered a large and what I got looked just like a regular sized sandwich. It was 19$ and definitely not worth it. I tasted fine, but won't be returning because of the price *also side note- when I ordered online apparently the Italian sandwich defaults to a wrap unless you say otherwise? I think it's so strange that you have to specifically ask for Italian sub bread for an Italian sub... so that was also annoying.

Yelp
Overnight at Logan and walked to this deli. It's a very friendly place and everyone knew each other and greeted me warmly. I had a slice of pizza and the steak tips, both were delicious. This deli reminded me of my local deli when I was a kid in Brooklyn and the neighborhood was tight.

Yelp
Cool spot with great small business charm! Had lunch here with my daughter while visiting the area and was pleasantly surprised to find the spot. Was staying at the Hilton Garden Inn and was a short 5 minute walk. Made to order, fresh cut deli meats and great bread!!!

Sera G.

Yelp
Best bakery pizza in town! Chicken cutlet is also another go-to. Great lunch spot. I always make sure to swing by when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Milano's is an authentic family run Italian deli in the heart of Orient Heights. 1/2 a block from Orient Heights MBTA station. You can sit and enjoy food inside as there are plenty of tables for this small location. They also have deli to go by the pound. Ovens are here and pumping out Italian pies and hot sandwiches toasted to perfection. They serve up one of the best subs I've had in a while. It is a simple mix of chicken cutlets yes they are homemade and mozzarella with roasted peppers and yes a little prosciutto. If I had room I'd eat two!! Check them out you will not be disappointed. FYI make sure you check out the hours as they close early.

Ralph L.

Yelp
Was just there loved the sandwiches and serve was great. I'm from Houston and would love to have a shop like this close by.

Yelp
Update. Came back after being very disappointed last year and somehow they have gotten worse. The service is terrible. The prices are absolutely insane for the portion size which is a joke. And that's coming from someone who thinks our US portions are way too big. This place is a stain on the good name of East Boston dining and delicatessens.

Yelp
We checked out Milano's Delicatessen and I can't tell you enough how amazing it was. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the family atmosphere - everyone knows everyone here, and we loved that. We tried so many amazing dishes and honestly we didn't go wrong with anything that we tried! First we tried arancinis - a traditional and an empancini. The traditional was loaded with cheese, peas and meat and was one of the crispiest we have had. The empancini was filled with traditional empanada filling, it packed a little heat to it and was the unexpected favorite! Next we tried the Italian Grande Cold Cut Sub and it checked all the boxes - a sturdy and delicious bread to hold it all together, layers of fresh Italian cold cuts, fresh mozzarella and topped with all the fixings - a perfect bite. We then tried the Chicken Napolitano Salad, loaded high with chicken cutlet, roasted red peppers, olives, cukes and all of the other favorite italian toppings - we were eating it with out the dressing and couldn't even tell because of all of the delish flavors. We had the creamy pesto chicken pasta next - SO MUCH BASIL! It was epic and the chicken cutlet that was scattered throughout left us with a perfect bite each time! We had the GARLIC KNOT PIZZA last - and we saved room . The crust is loaded with garlic knots and cheese! It is the perfect combo and we recommend this for everyone! There are plenty of places to sit inside, but carry out is an option as well! They have the capacity to cater and even can make 6 foot subs for your next event! We can't say enough great things about them! Next time you are heading to or from the airport, or if you're craving some delicious Italian - make sure to stop here!

Yelp
Stopped in for take away lunch. Pizza , broccoli rabe, and a turkey/provolone sandwich. I put the broccoli rabe on my pizza and on top of the sandwich! Yummy! Super nice people working there, the counter girl was very friendly and sweet. Will be back!

Yelp
Been going here since I was a kid. Place has gone downhill. Outrageous prices for mediocre food. Used to have the best sandwiches in Eastie, not anymore.

Ray B.

Yelp
We discovered this great find just a short walk from the Hilton Garden Inn. The Eggplant parmigiana and sauce tasted even better than my childhood neighbor's Nonna made. In addition to the food, the owner and staff added to the neighborhood feel with their authentic welcome.
google avatar

Geoffrey S.

Yelp
We had the Veal Neapoliano and Chicken Ariano subs and they were great. Service was quick and the place is spotless.

Jmap Z.

Yelp
Milano's Deli on Saratoga St in Eastie the place to visit for a great sub, or some amazing Italian dishes. They make you a part of their family as soon as you walk in. Thankfully they have been open for takeout and delivery during Covid, and they have been donating food to the East Boston community as well. You need to try the chicken ariano sub which consists of marinated chicken tips, broccoli rabe, garlic, and sharp provolone. Their family style dishes are excellent , and of course feed an army. If you happen to be in Eastie, or if you make a special trip in, I guarantee you will be extremely pleased, and by the time you leave, you will be famiglia!!

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about Milano's. Every single thing I've had here is outstanding. From the arancini, to the garlic knot crust pizza, to the pesto pasta, all delicious. This week they had Mac and cheese as their special. I got buffalo chicken and it was the best buffalo chicken Mac and cheese I've had in awhile. Please make the Mac and cheeses a permanent part of your menu!! Perfectly done. The only thing I will say is I do wish that they were open during dinner time, but happy for their employees to be able to enjoy the evenings.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and had two slices of pizza and a huge Tuna sandwich. Food was delicious and staff friendly and efficient. Would definitely eat here again.

Yelp
Wow! We were staying at the Hilton Garden down the street from Milano's. We had to pass by It to get to the T stop to get us into the city. Thank you sweet baby Jesus for making us walkers instead of shuttlers (because we would have never seen the place, if we took the hotel shuttle to the airport T stop!). Incredible sandwich selection (my hubs had the Italian sub...a few times), I had the chicken salad wrap (yum). The gal who takes your order is a SWEETHEART!! On one visit, (to assist in my recovery from a ridiculous hangover) I asked for an order of fries with cheese on the side (this may be a Chicago thing, because everyone behind the counter kinda stopped and looked at me funny), so they apologize, but they don't have cheese fries. I said no problem...I'll just have fries. Well, while we're at our table, waiting for our order, the gal comes over kneels down next to me and tries to hammer out a solution to my cheese fries dilemma. HOW SWEET IS THAT?!? This would never, I repeat never, happen in Chicago. They've got all kinds of coffees and Italian desserts (that sadly we didn't get to try). They've got a crowd of regulars that talk to the employees and each other from table to table. Despite being obvious tourists, they were great and didn't treat us like outsiders. Attentive, friendly service and staff, clean prep area, seating and bathrooms and delicious food. My only regret, is that they don't have one of these in Chicago. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll open one up in Edison Park? A girl can dream...

Yelp
We watched a video review of Milano's on You Tube and it looked like an interesting family owner local spot so we were all over it. Great location on Saratoga Street with plenty of street parking. We ordered the sheet pan pizza, a few meatball subs and a small eggplant parmigiana. The pizza was delish. A simple crusty square wit fresh marinara and parmigiana cheese. I dig this style of pizza, it's like grandma made for you in her kitchen on Sundays. The eggplant parm was rich, smooth and not oily at all. It did not come with pasta as it was a sub and we chose to have it on a platter instead. The meatball subs were for our kids and they loved them. As other reviewers have said this is for Italian Classics that remind you of your childhood and make you fee safe, secure and warm inside. Oh the staff was very nice and I think the owner was there and was very funny and charming. Love to Milano's.
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
Very disappointed got a chicken Parm sub from here the other day sub was cold was on the wrong role didn't seem to be the same owners
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
Best chicken parm sub in the city. Home made delicious chicken cutlets. Couldn't review anything else because I can't not get the chicken parm when I go. It's that good.
google avatar

Dan O.

Yelp
Just tried the arancini (rice balls) with cheese and sauce, and the chicken parm... to die for! Amazingly delicious.
google avatar

Diane H.

Yelp
Ordered delivery here since my co-workers ordered the previous day and theirs came fast..we ordered 3 sandwiches, came in 30 mins. I believe they charge 2-3$ for delivery fee and then you have to tip...I got the napolitano without the peppers and it was really delicious... though there's no sauce of any type...just chicken cutlet, prosciutto, and fresh mozzarella cheese. It was basically a $12 sandwich for me- for that amount they should add fries... Taste good but i will do pickup so it's cheaper though $9.50 for a sandwich when you pick it up isn't that cheap..so pricey but fresh! My sandwich was still hot but i wasn't too far- just by the airport. Co-workers said the chicken club wrap was good and the chicken parm was good too.

Ilene P.

Yelp
We had Milano's cater a large staff gathering and it was amazing in every way. Help in selecting the menu, amount to order and suggestions that made planning easier made organizing feel effortless. The food was incredible and there was plenty of it! Nothing skimpy here! We couldn't have been happier or more grateful!

Yelp
I have been going to Milanos for many years. I was so happy when they reopened after their fire . Milanos is one of my favorite places to order food and to have parties catered by the family owned restaurant. I recently had them cater my husbands retirement party this summer for 160 people . Everything was delicious., and Vinny made everything so easy for me I didn't have to lift a hand. From ordering the food to the delivery and the set up they did it all. I highly recommend trying Milanos it's a wonderful place with wonderful employees . Sue Perrotti

Yelp
I had a mouth watering Italian here. Probably one of the best I've had. It was packed with meats and toppings. You can taste the real quality of their imported meats. They even have a large deli case to get them at too. The menu is very large. Most sandwiches have an Italian flair to them. Lot's of stuff with tomatoes, mozzarella, etc.. They even have a whole home made pasta menu. My sandwich was almost a foot long and was only $5.99. Most of them were in the $6-$8 range. The guys at the counter were quick with the line and friendly. There is a homey seating area inside. Around lunch time it was packed with groups of professionals. They do catering also!

Hannah H.

Yelp
I ordered take out and had a great chicken napolitano salad! I was praying they'd add bread (diet? What diet?) since I forgot to add a side, and they did ! And delicious balsamic dressing. Fresh salad, tomato, chicken and proscuitto. Packaged up with so much care and here's the best part. The delivery driver was really nice and made my day.

Megan L.

Yelp
Honestly hands down one of the best things I ever ate. The sauce was amazing and the extra garlic from the knots even brought it higher. I've been living in East Boston for two years and my only regret that I haven't found this place sooner!!
google avatar

Kayli S.

Yelp
Stopped at Milano's on the way home from the beach for some sub sandwiches. Delicious! One of the best subs in Boston and the staff were fun to chat with while we waited for our order. We'll be back!

Lizzy W.

Yelp
This place is a hometown favorite. The Chicken Milano sub is legendary - great quality chicken and the sauce is plentiful. I've customized sandwiches as well and they do it right every time, even calling me to clarify an online order just to make sure it's correct!
google avatar

Toni N.

Yelp
The only reason this places gets two stars is because the staff is moderately friendly. I've been here a few times because it's close to home and people rave about it, but I seriously do not understand the draw. The pizza is "meh" and the subs are horrible. If you're into eating bread and not much else then this place is for you! My turkey sub with "everything" on it had literally three bites worth of food that was not bread. "Everything" also consists of tomato, pickles, onions, and hots. No mayo, mustard, oil, lettuce, etc etc. Sad.

A. A.

Yelp
The pizza is good but every time I get a chicken parm sub I am disappointed. The sub comes with nearly no sauce on it, even after I have specifically requested extra sauce. The "chicken parm" sub is basically chicken fingers and cheese in a sub roll. What a waste of $10...would not recommend.

Shawn M.

Yelp
I wish I could give this restaurant 800 star's this restaurant is awesome they have great customer service and the greatest food
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
My first time here and I was not impressed. I ordered the chicken cesar salad and an arrancini since I saw good reviews on here. The only upside to the salad was the generous amount of chicken. It was overly dressed and some pieces of unappealing lettuce. The arrancini was COLD. I asked for the sauce with it. It did not taste horrible but the mere fact that it was not even room temperature warm was extremely upsetting. I also have to yet to find a place with a delicious arrancini outside of Italy. Definitely NOT worth the 10 minute drive from work.

Mandy L.

Yelp
Yes yes great food best place to eat we highly recommend it for everyone great family and friendly place they made exactly what I wanted and more if I could I would give a 10 amazing
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Food is great. best sauce around. the luncheon deals are a good deal. the subs and dinners are overpriced but good. i don't think the prices were that high before the fire. besides the high prices, the food and service is excellent.

Eloise R.

Yelp
Best meatball sub in Boston, best eggplant parm ever. Salads, meals, always great.

Yelp
I have moved from Boston to New York city about 10 years ago and this place to me makes the best DELIVERY pizza I have ever had in Boston. I have lived in Boston and now living right outside East Boston I have tried them all. This place blows away Santarpio's pizza in east boston. I tried Santarpio's pizza 3 times and got tired of their burnt with such little toppings pizza. When i ask for the bottom to be cooked that does not mean burn it! Although Santarpio's doesn't deliver. I also tried many pizza places in Boston. Regina Pizzeria & Ernesto's Pizza. Again this place is just a step above them but not by much. Why do I like Milano's pizza so much? Well for starters they make an awesome square pizza. Crispy on the bottom, soft and fluffy in the middle with a great garlicky flavor pizza sauce. So hard to find a place that makes square pizza, even harder to find one that makes it correct. Now their regular round pizza is just as good. Close to thin crust but the dough has plenty of flavor. Again their sauce tasted delicious with hints of garlic and other Italian spices. I love to get their broccoli rabe, Quatro Formaggio, with sausage pizza. It is to die for and reminds me of the pizza that I ate in Brooklyn New York. Sadly I rarely order from Milano's. They are not open past 5pm on M-Saturday. Worst of all they are closed Sundays. Football Sundays!! Sundays are the days I veg out watching football all day. The new thing I will start doing is ordering their pizza on Saturday so I can have it for Sunday but you need to order it early on Saturday as they are so popular they run out of pizza dough.

Dee D.

Yelp
So glad to see your newly opened restaurant! Love it. Had lunch there today, veal parm sub and bakery pizza. Delish as always. Never have had a bad meal because everything is super fresh. Love the new decor colors and the tables are really amazing. Good luck in your newly remodeled restaurant!
google avatar

Erin J.

Yelp
This is a hardcore Italian delicatessen. As their slogan reads, they are "keeping up a great italian tradition". Their prices are on the higher end but it evens out as this is one of those establishments where you eat half of what you order and take the rest home. If you are on a no-carb diet....do not bother stepping foot in this place unless you are strong enough to just get a salad.
google avatar

Lady D.

Yelp
This was my brother-in-laws experience, not mine, but it was entirely unfair and inappropriate. You will not find me as a patron of Milano's because of how they treated my family. This review is more about Milano's quality of service and business practice, rather than their food. We placed a large pizza order for our son's birthday party weeks ago and Milano's called us TWO DAYS before the party to let us know they now cannot fulfill our order because they made a mistake and failed to let us know at the time that our order did not meet the minimum cost for a Sunday order. We then had to scramble to find another place that would fulfill our order on such short notice. Luckily after calling around we did find somewhere. I understand people make mistakes, fine. But they made no attempt to compensate or help us out in any way, or to make an exception due to THEIR mistake. This is not how a good business that hopes to make long term relationships with their customers should operate. I felt compelled to spread the word that Milano's Deli's bad business practice of terribly inconveniencing a customer with no remorse or recourse needs to be made public so others may be aware and avoid. BE WARNED.
google avatar

Jocelyn G.

Yelp
The sandwiches we got here were packed and tasty, friendly service, and lots of interesting things on the menu. A bunch of seats in an area made to look like your Italian grandmother's kitchen. However, the amount of salt that they put onto the fries is astonishing. I had to brush them off before I ate them. Now, for some people, this might be a giant plus. I, on the other hand, use salt very very sparingly so I didn't like it. Prices aren't too bad, but they have weird hours so it can be hard to get in to try the food.

Yelp
Oh my lords. This place is where subs were born. Milano's was recommended to us when we moved to the neighborhood by a friend whose grandparents grew up in the area. I have to admit, I was never a big deli or sub person before I experienced Milano's. They never fail to impress, now. Family owned and operated, the staff is great and they're very friendly, fast, and efficient. Attached to the deli is a small cafe area with a coffee bar that seems busy during the weekday lunch rush. I've never tried the pizza (I reserve that for Santarpio's down the street) but my favorite sub of all is the basic Italian: imported salami, mortadella, capicolla, provolone, and everything else but the hots. I'm making myself hungry as I write this. The deli also has a small grocery attached with fresh homemade pasta, meats, and cheeses. The gnocchi and raviolis are great and a definite recommendation. I still have to try the gelatos this summer. Since we practically live around the corner from the place it's pretty difficult not to make a habit of Milano's. But it's must stop for visitors to the Orient Heights part of East Boston. You won't be disappointed.

Tracy C.

Yelp
I really can't believe all the good reviews this place has. I wish I could say the same. 1st time I ordered their garlic knot pizza it came without the garlic. Just dried out knots that were shaped more like poop than a knot. Not appetizing at all. So I call to ask what had happened and got an apology and how he (the owner) felt it was a bad 1st impression and he'd comp the next time we ordered the pizza. Great right? Well not when you call a few days later for the pizza and a few other things and then wait 2 hours to get it. Food was right but it was cold, everything had to be reheated including the garlic knot pizza. There's an old saying,"Fool me once shame on you,Fool me twice shame on me". I never give a 3rd. I live near too many places that have better food and service to go here again.

I love Milano's, I wish they would stay open later as i work in the city during the day and would love to be able to grab them for dinner but they are never open by the time I come home! The only time I get to enjoy a sub from Milano's is on Saturdays because they are closed on Sundays. I am a huge fan of everything I have gotten there from pizza to calzones to almost every chicken sub. The only thing that bothers me and stops me from going more is I noticed the last time I was there no one was wearing gloves. It kind of grossed me out, and we haven't been back since. I definitely love the food and the local vibe, but hygiene is pretty important to me when i go out to eat.
