Detroit’s 17 Best Ice Cream Shops | Eater Detroit

Owners Alexis Matteson and Deion Cao say their vegan and classic ice cream is made from scratch without pre-manufactured mixes, chemical stabilizers, or artificial colors and flavors. Milk & Froth serves more than a dozen rotating ice cream flavors, including honeycomb, butterscotch brownie, matcha pistachio, malt cherry chocolate, orange cream, salted caramel, chocolate hazelnut, and Blue Magic." - Courtney Burk

Detroit Food Truck Milk & Froth Opens New Ice Cream Parlor Downtown | Eater Detroit

"Originally launched as a popular ice cream truck a few summers ago, Milk & Froth is opening a brick-and-mortar storefront in downtown Detroit on Monday, July 5, in Bedrock’s historic Buhl Building. Owners Alexis Matteson and Deion Cao started the business after living downtown and not finding the quality of ice cream they loved in other major cities; they make both vegan and classic ice cream from scratch without pre-manufactured mixes, chemical stabilizers, or artificial colors and flavors. Responding to customers asking how they can get their ice cream year-round, the new shop will serve more than a dozen rotating flavors — including honeycomb, butterscotch brownie, matcha pistachio, malt cherry chocolate, orange cream, salted caramel, chocolate hazelnut, and Blue Magic — and will be open noon to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday." - Monica Williams

Google
Absolutely Flawless Ice Cream Milk & Froth is hands-down one of Detroit’s sweetest gems. The space is bright and inviting, and the staff couldn’t be friendlier. I immediately appreciated how clean and easy-to-read their menu board was — simple layout, clear flavors, and helpful descriptions that made it easy to decide (after several generous samples, of course). I finally landed on the Three Peanut and Matcha Pistachio, and both were outstanding. You can taste the quality — no additives, artificial flavorings, or stabilizers — just pure, creamy perfection. The portions were generous too, which is becoming rare these days. Every bite felt like real craftsmanship in ice cream form. If I had to nitpick, parking can be a bit tricky on the one-way street out front, and the lower half of the interior walls — with their intentionally unfinished cement board look — feels a little odd compared to the rest of the bright, polished space. Maybe it’s part of the vibe, but it’s not quite my thing. That said, the ice cream itself more than makes up for any quirks. I can’t wait to come back and try more flavors. Milk & Froth absolutely delivers — this is how ice cream should be.

Google
My absolute favorite ice cream shop downtown. I love that they switch out the flavors and make the waffle cones fresh daily. Give them a try. Flavor in the picture is Matcha Pistachio, go try it before its gone!!

Eloïse G.

Google
Delicious ice creams, I tried a few perfumes such as black sesame, mango lassi and pistachio matcha and I have to admit this is really good. I was surprised of the quality, even the cone is homemade waffle. I recommend it’s really good !

Google
Hands down the best ice cream in Detroit. Ice cream base has a great flavor balance. You can tell the milk products they use is quality. Ice cream individual flavors are delicious, unique, and they accommodate dairy free eaters . My suggestion is to open up another location. Customer service is kind and attentive. Clean establishment and has seats to eat in the space. Parking is difficult during peak hours. Street parking only available.

Google
Support Detroit made The ice cream was amazing, so creamy and flavorful. They do offer samples but there are a limit selection. I would typically like to see more variety of flavors, there was nothing with chocolate, but I'll still give a five star because my salted Carmel was that great. The guy at the counter was attentive, as soon as I walked in, he jumped up to assist.

shawn W.

Google
Not a huge selection but what they do have is delicious. Excellent homemade waffle cones as well. Can’t wait to try other flavors. Had the sea salt butter cake and tasted my wife’s malted cherry chocolate. Service was friendly and efficient. Also bonus that they’re open until 10pm on a Monday night.

Google
One of the most delicious ice cream shops in Detroit 🤤 🍦 they had many seasonal flavors like sesame seed and hazelnut -chocolate ! The girl that was there was really kind :) my favorite flavor was honeycomb!!! Omg was amazing

Carolyn

Google
It smells so good in here, firstly. Secondly, you can try the ice creams, and thirdly, they're all delicious. I chose the salted butter cake one and dang, it's good. The chewy caramel-y bites inside are like little nuggets of heaven. The waffle cones are fresh and perfect. A great place to stop and have ice cream or grab a pint. Our server was pleasant and friendly. The ice cream is a bit light, like it's fluffy rather than densely packed, so it eats quickly. I'd get a bowl for the kiddos so that it maybe wouldn't run all over the place and stick the cone on top.

Yelp
Best ice cream in Detroit! The quality of the ice cream is outstanding. It is so fresh and creamy. You must try the fresh homemade waffle cones. The flavors they offer are unique. I wish they had more flavor options or would do rotating flavors. My favorites are chocolate hazelnut and strawberry.
google avatar

Eid F.

Yelp
Really Delicious ice cream. Service was fast and friendly A little ackward of a layout with the benches lining the entrance. Makes it a little hard to get around if there are people in line.
google avatar

Jessy R.

Yelp
Hand's down my favorite ice cream in the city (STILL). Actually this is my favorite ice cream in general. All the flavors are so unique and handcrafted and entirely made homemade in small batches. My two favorite flavors are the matcha pistachio and malt chocolate cherry. If you don't go into the location for a scoop, you can buy pints at local grocery stores and markets.
google avatar

Yelp
The staff was friendly, the vibe was modern and energetic. But most importantly, this is some of the best damn ice cream we've had! We tasted the Honeycomb and the Sea Salt Butter Cake. They went wonderfully together! Definitely stop here for some ice cream.
google avatar

Crazy D.

Yelp
It's a cute lil spot not much room for the crowd it draws, busy with great customer service. Fresh hand mafe vegan ice cream (if you choose). The absolute best strawberry (vegan or otherwise) I've had in years!! I Absolutely recommend.

Yelp
I'm annoyed at myself for waiting so long to try this place! It was super good. I enjoyed every flavor I tried, which were several different flavors. We had the honeycomb, which is closest to vanilla for all you plain lovers out there, of which my daughter is one. And then a beautifully scented honey lavender, a cherry and chocolate chip in a vanilla base that was fantastic, a sea salt butter cake that was outstanding, and a very punchy coffee and cream non-dairy ice cream, that you would never know was non-dairy. I can't wait to go back. My only slight critique is I wish they simply had even more delicious flavors.

Yelp
If you're looking for a new ice cream spot in Detroit, you've come to the right place! Milk and Froth is a locally owned, Detroit business that makes its own classic dairy and vegan ice creams. The flavors are often inventive, taking the classics and elevating them a level or two. I tried the sea salt butter cake with a homemade waffle cone and absolutely loved it. The store front was clean with several tables for seating. Location is downtown so be mindful if you're looking for parking. Would happily visit here again on a hot summer day.
google avatar

Karim J.

Yelp
They were very generous with the samples so I really got an idea of the quality of their ice cream. But hands down the honey comb ice cream is FANTASTIC and a must try when you come here. Wonderfully inviting ice cream parlor and employees. Highly recommend

Yelp
When 2 foodie friends urged me to go to this ice cream shop, I knew a visit was in order. After a busy day in the office, I stopped by for a quick treat, despite the fact that I had ice cream the day before. Milk and Froth serves classic and vegan artisanal ice creams in a spare-looking location. On the day of my visit, a few flavors were available, including honeycomb, honey lavender, salted caramel, and chocolate. I sampled a few flavors before settling on two scoops served in a crunchy waffle cone. I felt like a kid as I gobbled my ice cream, a big ice cream ring outlining my lips as I enjoyed the comfortable summer weather on the way to parking. The Honeycomb flavor was divine, tasting of burnt sugar flavors. I also had the Malt Cherry Chocolate which had roasted Michigan cherries and ribbons of chocolate. No wonder my friends recommend this place; the flavors were fantastic, as was the service. Note pints are also available from the fridge.

Felix G.

Yelp
Very good ice cream and the interior looks very nice, would recommend. The mango ice cream is the best.

Yelp
Located in downtown Detroit, this is a nice lil ice cream spot with dairy and non dairy options! I had the milk chocolate (non dairy) with a waffle cone and it was good. Not the best chocolate ice cream I've ever had but it was still delicious. If I wasn't looking for non dairy options, I would have gone with the Malt Cherry Chocolate, now THAT was to die for gooood. Loved the mix of cherries and chocolate shavings, a must try. Servers were super nice and allowed me to try as many flavors as I wanted. 15-min free street parking is available, and other pay to park lots are nearby.
google avatar

Tre G.

Yelp
Malt cherry chocolate was amazing, coffee and cream vegan was amazing. Vegan flavors great, Sea salt butter cake phenomenal Cones are fresh and warm
google avatar

Kassy K.

Yelp
SO GOOD!!! A must try. Cute little shop. Delicious flavors. And icecream just melts in your mouth. I want more already
google avatar

Audrey A.

Yelp
I love their menu. Super underrated icecream spot and their icecream is so perfect and creamy. A little on the sweeter side so their portion goes a long way. I suggest just getting the most for your money and buying a pint of the yummy stuff and going home with it:)
google avatar

Leslie C.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream, made from scratch. Cute store and decor, with seating inside. I enjoyed 2 scoops: matcha pistachio, and honeycomb. Honeycomb is special because there is honeycomb brittle in the ice cream. Vegan options too. Easy nearby street parking.
google avatar

Donna O.

Yelp
There are dairy and non fairy options; they offer samples, and everything is delicious! The first time I went, I got the Sea Salt Butter Cake scoop and yum! The second time I got the Salted Caramel which I didn't realize had chocolate chips throughout so that was a surprise! Definitely recommend, especial since it's January in Detroit and for whatever reason, the cold and gross weather makes me want ice cream
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
Maybe I'm partial because this place is cute inside, or maybe I'm biased because I had been dying to try this place for so long- either way, it did not disappoint. This is a small little gem of a place hiding in Detroit. They have about 10 or so flavors that are all made from scratch in small batches, even with vegan options. They let you sample before you commit and my husband and I both tried and loved our first sample. I got the sea salt butter cake (what's not to love when butter is in the name?) and he got the peppermint patty (that is vegan and he still doesn't know this- shhhh.) Waffle cones were fresh and delicious. Place is cute, and I can't wait to come back with my kids.
google avatar

Leah G.

Yelp
Probably the best ice cream I have ever had. Honey lavender is an amazing flavor and I'm excited to go back and try the other flavors they had available.

Tamilya F.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh tasting ice cream, especially the butter pecan! The young man who waited on us was very polite and efficient! The place is small and quaint. It's cute and always clean.
google avatar

Yelp
The very best ice cream I've ever had. Get their sea salt butter cake -- make it a double -- in a waffle cone. We stayed downtown for 2 weeks and went for this ice cream almost every day. We only skipped days because we brought home a hand packed pint to get us through until the next visit. This ice cream is so good you'll feel zero shame for over indulging. It's not an option to abstain if you're anywhere near downtown. We'll be making trips in the winter to get it. This is a candidate for a last meal request. Words won't do it justice. Just go. Get the double. No regrets.

Christine C.

Yelp
We went to Milk and Froth for the first time last evening. I love butter pecan ice cream, so I tried their butter pecan brittle flavor. It was smooth bu extremely sugary and totally lacking in flavor. A good butter pecan should have a light caramel flavor that comes from browned butter. Pecans are critical, and they should be toasted to bring out their nuttiness. This ice cream had neither attribute. There was simply no flavor which testified to its name. It was just sweet--sickeningly sweet. The brittle in the mix also added nothing to the ice cream. It had no distinctive flavor which is typical of a good brittle; it was just barely crunchy and sickeningly sweet. Such a disappointment.

Malisa R.

Yelp
Love the ice cream here! I have been here a handful of times. It reminds me of the salt and straw or Jenni's of Detroit. Very innovative when it comes to their flavors, which I love. During our last trip, we had a flavor that tasted like rocky road, but the marshmallows were covered in matcha. How yummy is that?! The only thing I wished they had were split scoops. I love trying different flavors and normally order a double scoop to get more flavors. I always throw away 1/2 my order because it's so large and can't finish it. I do mention this every time I go, so hopefully this is something they implement in the future. I event shared paying more for a split scoop just like salt and straw and Jenni's. Fingers crossed they make this change!

Yelp
Michigan summer is BRUTAL & I thank my lucky stars that Milk & Froth exists! I'm especially glad that Milk & Froth has a downtown location AND a roaming food truck! It was parked in Shed 5 of Eastern Market today & I finally got to try it & it was the perfect pick me up on this sweltering 90+ degree day today! It is perfectly creamy & packed full of flavor, without being too sweet & burning the throat. It was so refreshing to eat a scoop of the orange creamsicle & I also tried my friend's honeycomb, which also tasted divine! The workers on the food truck are so friendly & I am also so intrigued by their black waffle cones! Perhaps on a day that isn't quite as hot, I'll brave the meltiness of ice cream and opt for trying that cone. :) Can't wait to try the other flavors on the menu! I love that they have slightly more unconventional flavors & have an even mix of vegan & non-vegan flavors as well!
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
Seriously the best ice cream I've ever had! The butter cake ice cream was so good and I loved the fresh waffle cone.
google avatar

Alex O.

Yelp
Best I've cream I've had in the Detroit area by a long shot!! They offer both dairy and dairy free ice cream options. All of the flavors I've tried are really tasty and creamy. My last visit I had the orange it was just like an orange creamsicle with its creaminess. The sea salt butter cake is the number one flavor and a must try!! There is 15 minute street parking right out front making it convenient to just stop in quick. The pints are also available at Plum Market but not all flavors available there. This place is a must try especially during this hot summer!!
google avatar

Carolina C.

Yelp
This beautiful, minimalist ice cream shop has maximalist flavors! I adore a textured ice cream and that's where Milk and Froth shines. Their honeycomb ice cream is phenomenal, not too sweet but enough to enhance that honeycomb flavor with a toffee like texture. You can't go wrong with any flavor, and they even have dairy-free options if your stomach isn't it's usual powerful self. The staff lets you have as many samples as you'd like before you pick your favorite. They also serve pints so if you're in a hurry but need your fix, they have you covered! Next time you need to cool down or take advantage of the cold winter where your ice cream can't melt, take a trip to Milk & Froth!
google avatar

Gianna G.

Yelp
This review applies only to the food truck that was at the jazz festival. I was so intrigued by their menu first of all they had roasted strawberry, mint Patty, pecan brittle, and honeycomb. I tried the pecan brittle and was really impressed it was absolutely delicious also nice fresh cones that were black very unusual. Looking forward to going to their store downtown for more!
google avatar

Nat Z.

Yelp
A simple spot with a simple menu but featuring particularly dank offerings. Great flavors (less traditional takes on more traditional ice cream flavors, so, more milky/buttery varieties as opposed to, say, exotic-fruity-herbal). Staff are great!

Meg A.

Yelp
The ice cream flavors offered are both elicited and original but don't fret, they have some classics on board too! We tried the honey with a waffle cone, 10/10 would recommend. Then we also mixed a bowl with the classic chocolate and roasted strawberry, honestly though you can't go wrong with any flavor.

Marisa M.

Yelp
So happy to find ice cream that is locally made and has such pure ingredients. They make their own base, which is rare to see. Flavors are interesting. We tried some and they all tasted great. We settled on the butter cake. The butterscotch swirl made it just a little too sweet, but I would get it again. The waffle cone is made fresh in house and was also delicious! Tip: If you can't get to the shop, Plum Market and Meijer Rivertown sell pints!

Colin H.

Yelp
OMG - Love!!! We both had Sea Salt Butter Cake and it was delightful. Such a great place - will definitely come again when back in town!!!

Dani F.

Yelp
Great friends, great non dairy ice cream. Amazing neighborhood. plenty of choices and flavors.
google avatar

Cara B.

Yelp
I don't have anything bad to say about this place! They offer a variety of flavors, both dairy and non-dairy. The customer service was great. The staff allowed us to sample different flavors. The store was clean and although there was a bit of a line, it moved fast. The waffle cones are made in house, mine was made fresh. It was warm and delicious. I tried the chocolate hazelnut ice cream, and my friend got the roasted strawberry!!! We both loved our choices.
google avatar

Taylor O.

Yelp
Truly craft ice cream! I tried their milk chocolate ice cream (which was vegan) and it was so creamy and didn't melt super fast. The charcoal cone was interesting/different but still good, especially because it was warm and freshly made. I will say, the line was very long because I went at 8pm on a Sunday in Campus Maritus so I waited 25ish mins for my cone, but it wasn't their fault they were so busy! The staff was very nice and organized despite the large line of people waiting. Not the mention, their truck is so cute. Great for an Instagram photo. Be sure to check their Instagram page for where they will be located beforehand too!
google avatar

Austin G.

Yelp
Milk & Froth is a small batch creamery in downtown Detroit popular with tourists and locals. Located in a small shop in an office building, they sell over a dozen of unique flavors like honeycomb with honey chunks mixed into the ice cream. When you go, taste several flavors and get it on a waffle cone. They make their cones fresh every day and they melt in your mouth!
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Some of the very best ice cream around! So much depth in flavor, plenty of delicious non-dairy options, and a wonderful staff. Milk & Froth is a must visit in Detroit!
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
Rush over here! Wow!! I stopped by because it was conveniently located from Huntington Place, and there were already two groups of customers waiting at the door before opening! Just an FYI there's a discrepancy for their hours (some sources say 1pm and some say 2pm but we were served around 1pm). All the flavors were delicious - I especially liked the malt chocolate cherry! Honey comb was really fragrant and went well combined with orange cream! The sea salt butter cake is also delicious (think a better version of Jeni's ooey gooey butter cake). Waffle cones weren't ready yet when we arrived but they were only a $1 add-on! There was also a couple of non dairy options as well.
google avatar

Bianca L.

Yelp
Amazing wholesome ice cream! So creamy. And delicious. The location was great for downtown Detroit. So cute and modern.
google avatar

Mcalina B.

Yelp
So cute and quaint! Nothing like a boutique ice cream parlor with both non-dairy and dairy products (flavors). It was very casual and smelled so good because they make fresh waffle cones! Omg! I order the malted Cherry chocolate ice cream on fresh waffle cone. My total was $6 which was fair fir the amount and creativity of this spot! Will be back and try it fir yourself! Perfect to go and then walk downtown on date night!
google avatar

Michigan H.

Yelp
Seriously great ice cream. The salted caramel is special, as is the honeycomb and peppermint patty. Their waffle cones are the best I've ever had. Love this spot.

Charlotte K.

Yelp
Great gelato and service. Personal favorites are Sea Salt Buttercake and Honeycomb. I'm not vegan but I get nondairy from time to time. My go to is Milk Chocolate, when I do.

Ana P.

Yelp
The customer service was amazing. But I did not enjoy the ice cream very much. I had a sample and it was definitely not the right temperature, super warm ice cream. I ended up getting butter pecan and it had a ton of sugar in it from the pecans. Just not a fan. Would not come here again. Overpriced one scoop for $6
google avatar

Hebert C.

Yelp
Absolutely on point punch of flavor and inventiveness. Loved the honeycomb flavor. The fresh waffle cones are insane good.
google avatar

Angela H.

Yelp
Went in for the vegan ice cream and they did not disappoint. Tasted all the flavors and settled for the coffee. So rich! So delicious!
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
SO good!! I got the sea salt butter cake in a waffle cone and it was absolutely delicious. The ice cream was so creamy and full of flavor. I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this little ice cream shop.
google avatar

Faiza C.

Yelp
Best ice-cream truck! I tried their honey comb flavor and it's now my favorite ice-creak truck! There charcoal cone is delicious. Next I want to try butter pecan and toasted strawberries!
google avatar

Mindy F.

Yelp
Did you say this place was vegan? Wouldn't know it! Tastes delicious and so many flavors! Great place and happy to see them so aware of how their product impacts our community.

Kaela K.

Yelp
Milk & Froth has some of the best ice cream I've ever had! Both dairy & non dairy. Sea salt butter cake is to die for!
google avatar

Tanya M.

Yelp
Love the vibe, love the ice cream and the staff and vegan peppermint ice cream is on point!

Mary B.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream, friendly service, and an upbeat environment all add to the great experience we had at Milk and Froth. Thank you!!
