Chicago’s Saddest Restaurant Closures, June 2025 | Eater Chicago

"Once considered an anchor along Division Street, the cafe at 1920 W. Division Street has been closed since May after the city suspended its business license. New owners had been running the spot since 2022; management described the closure as temporary, but no updates have emerged in five weeks." - Ashok Selvam

Stopped in for lunch and we were glad we did. Grilled Chicken sandwich with salad was very delicious. Cauliflower soup was an excellent combination. My wife had a veggie wrap. My dislike was the pickle, too soggy, however that might just be me. It’s probably ment to be. The place is cool, like a cozy coffee shop with a warm fireplace.

They have a very interesting lineup of drinks. I got the cardamom latte. At first, it had a weird aftertaste, so I asked if I can taste the cardamom syrup by itself and decide if I wanted them to remake the drink or just order something else. They graciously accepted my request. I decided to reorder the same drink but with less espresso. I don't think cardamom and espresso is a good combination because the espresso is such a strong flavor. For my meal I got the jerk chicken wrap. It had a lovely cucumber yogurt sauce. However, it needed salt. I also think the yogurt sauce would be better with properly spiced jerk chicken. Because cucumber is so refreshing, it needs something to refresh. I didn't think the wrap was spicy enough to balance the cooling agent of the sauce. So I think the sauce can end up diluting the overall flavor of the wrap. I liked the addition of pineapple and pickled onions. I left full! I will definitely come back to this place. I know I can have a $25 healthy meal with a specialty drink, sandwich, and chips. It's good for something traveling on a budget

Google
I came to this cafe at the recommendation of my cousin and it was great! I got a Matcha and their Turkey Reuben with chips and it was delicious! My friend ordered their Buffalo wrap and said it was great too. Their interior was also modern casual and super chill. The cashier wasn't too friendly though everything else made up for it. Would definitely come again!

Google
I had their roast beef sandwich with a side salad. I also got some of their chips. It was very good. I loved the sandwich. The bread was super fresh. I also got a chocolate chip cookie it was also delicious. They have Coke products, and have cans of pop. They have a bunch of outdoor seating.

Google
Second time here and I can honestly say I love this place! The staff was very friendly during both visits. I enjoyed my food both times as well. Tried the granola parfait today and it was amazing. The avocado toast is also good especially if you love bacon. You can seat yourself inside and there’s also outdoor seating. See y’all next time!

Google
Had the BLT and it was amazing. Perfect toasted bread, mayo, crispy thick bacon, and ripe perfectly sliced tomatoes. Nothing fancy but just perfectly done. $22 for a sandwich and coke is a little steep but its chicago in 2024. I hate the order at the counter places but if that's your thing it's very casual. Place needed a little sweep other than that it was clean as a whistle.

Google
Great independent breakfast place, fresh baked pastries and a semi rotating menu. Service is semi do it yourself with stations at up for silverware and water. Staff has always been very friendly and I've never left feeling dissatisfied

Yelp
Perfect for work from home homies, this place is great for meals during the day while working remotely or catching up with fri new. They have breakfast and lunch options, with a kid's menu for your littles. There's free wifi codes and menu scans on each table. Order at the counter and have the food brought to your table. I've only tried the avocado and smoked Gouda sandwich so far. Really good!

Yelp
I spend a lot of time here, they have a good menu (lots of options), and the space is nice, clean, quiet, and comfortable. They also have an out door patio (definitely kid friendly). I have had the turkey Reuben - it's okay, it lacks a little texture, but if you love turkey you will love it. Ham and Havarti - the pretzel bun is pretty good, mustard is great on it, the ham gets a little lost with all the salt from everything else but overall good. Veggie sandwich - I think the veggies are a little unevenly cooked / prepared, there isn't enough hummus to say it's a hummus sandwich. The hummus is almost like a condiment on it. It's not called a Hummus Sandwich so it is not misleading Jerk Chicken - it's a no for me dawg. Basically it's just a chicken wrap with pineapple. It's weird which might be good for some. It's lacking salt / acid / fat Black bean Soup - It tastes just like Amy's canned soup. It's good. I think it could use some hummus on top as opposed to the teaspoon of sour cream applied typically. Def ask for hummus Fried chicken sandwich - delicious - I think the bread is a little too crunchy in terms of the fried chicken also being hard. Texture is off but taste isn't. All the coffees have been great, they use a nice earl grey tea bag.

Yelp
Milk and honey is a cute cafe to grab a quick bit to eat. You order at the front and they bring your meal to you. I appreciated my meal. The price versus portion was matching. I decided on the half order of sandwich and soup in which I chose the turkey Rueben and the cream of mushroom. The hostess swore people ordered seconds of the soup. Chileeee a lie. It was porridge. And the truffle oil added did nothing to it - didn't elevate or add to the soup in any way. The house chips were tasty for sure. I'd get those again. I may return to try the smoked salmon dish but I wouldn't be pressed if I didn't return

Yelp
I enjoy Milk & Honey cafe bc the food and coffee are always solid, ppl who work there are lovely, it's bright and inviting inside. They also have a nice outdoor patio for warmer temps. You order at the register, then they bring the food out to you. I spent several hours there eating lunch and studying and had a lovely time. My BLT was delicious, excellent oat milk vanilla latte, refreshing Arnold Palmer. I also got a side of fruit that I wish was more fresh. I've also enjoyed a roast beef sandwich here. Their breakfast burrito is amazing, but only available on weekdays. I've also had the chilaquiles, which was just aight. Parking on division is usually a hit or miss so plan ahead.

Yelp
I had a wonderful time catching up with friends over brunch at Milk & Honey in Wicker Park! The restaurant is cute, with menu boards on the walls that give it a cozy feel. The service was great; the staff were friendly and helpful. The menu had something for everyone, including mimosas, and the food was great. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it as a nice spot to relax and enjoy a meal with friends.

Yelp
Went back after a rather long time twice in 3 weeks and I will only talk about what is famous at Milk & Honey Cafe. They're absolutely delicious, freshly made bakery items and fantastic coffee. The seasonal bakes never fail to impress me and this time it was an Espresso Chocolate chip scone! Could it get any better?!!! Sigh! I truly savored every crunch and bite and could eat more than 1 scone - it was that good! Customer service is always stellar and quick, though they are so busy. Beautiful outdoor area in good weather and such a modern fashionable crowd! Totally still love the spot!!!

Yelp
neighborhood joint - Turkey Reuben all day Wish they were open all day & started offering sub sams

Yelp
Somehow they always deliver ahead of the time estimate! The chicken sausages are so so good, I always order some extras. Love the avocado toast too!
google avatar

Yelp
We seem to come here every time we arrive in Chicago visiting our son and his family. good food and the friendly service are just so enjoyable. I had the veggie wrap and it really hit the spot. I think I've been here three or four times and it's just so consistently good. I've had other dishes before and I just know I can count on them for really good food and service that is very friendly.

Yelp
This place is really cute! Came here for breakfast. Oatmeal and chai latte. Oatmeal was good. Chai latte was okay not a ton of spice and pretty light flavor wise. Service was easy we ordered at the front, got a number and was served quickly. Will try something else next time!
google avatar

Yelp
I would give this place 5 stars but I can't because they don't serve the breakfast burrito on the weekend!! Please please please serve the breakfast burrito on Saturday Sunday- it will bring in big $$$$

Yelp
No signature drinks, but their standard drinks are truly really good. Next time I come back I'm gonna try their breakfast burrito. Great atmosphere.

Yelp
Great food, great ambiance, and amazing service. Kid friendly too! We have been here several times and have loved evrytime

Yelp
Shat through a bin bag. Pancakes tasted like nothing. Literally the absence of taste. How is this even possible? Like eating a t shirt. Staff is very friendly and nice though.

Essence B.

Yelp
Very cozy seat yourself cafe. Their lattes come with three shots of espresso but I asked for less. The caramel and hazelnut syrups are really really good and the service is warm and friendly. Worth it and very affordable.
google avatar

Destinee C.

Yelp
They ran out of bagels for my smoked salmon plate so I was kind of disappointed but over all decent cafe. Noting too special here & I've eaten here several times. I do like to try their special soup of the day bc they are usually creative and flavorful. Service is always on it and very quick. Ambiance is light and a bit corky.

Yelp
I ordered a Turkey Reuben Sandwich, it was very good with thinly sliced quality turkey, kraut, Swiss cheese, and delicious Thousand Island Dressing on perfectly toasted Marble Rye with chips. My friend ordered pancakes with mixed berries on the side (a skimpy portion). She said that the pancakes were a little overdone for her and she asked for another order, they were very nice about it. The staff is friendly and willing to please. The restaurant is very airy with well-placed tables and chairs. Nice patio as well.

Michael M.

Yelp
The best breakfast burrito in the city. I wish they served it on the weekend. The pico is the perfect touch.

Yelp
I'm currently back home, in Miami, typing this. I've come to Chicago twice and your breakfast burrito is now all I can think about. I woke up wanting it sooo badly I combed reviews to find the best breakfast burrito in Miami... nowhere near as amazing as yours. So I guess your burritos will haunt my dreams until one day I return to Chicago. If you live in the area.. don't take this for granted cause I'd literally only go back to Chicago only for this burrito. Also the staff were so nice and the whole ambiance was lovely

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite spots when I lived in Chicago, but my recent visit had me wondering what happened to this place. The once-famous granola that used to be sold nationwide was a pale shade of its former self: cardboard flavor, not crunchy, barely any dried cherries, seeds, or nuts. It tasted like it had been sitting out a long time. Sandwiches were meh, kind of soggy. The bathroom was dirty and the self-serve stations were out of basic things. Then I read some reviews here explaining the change in ownership, and it all made sense. Back in the day this was a cool spot for foodies but now it seems like it's mostly parents who want to feed their kids something easy and aren't expecting too much. It wasn't terrible but it seems like the new owners are fine with this place being mid now that Wicker Park has changed. Sad because it used to be so much more.

Sunny P.

Yelp
I came with a couple of friends and we got the all day breakfast. I got the breakfast panini and it was delicious! It had the perfect amount of eggs to cheese and tomato ratio on the sourdough. One of my friends got the burrito and enjoyed it as well. My third friend got a single waffle with fruit and for a single plain waffle, it cost $13 which is pretty crazy for one waffle. My friend and I that got the breakfast sandwiches also got the orange brioche french toast and it was pretty flavorful. We didn't really taste any orange or sweetness to it. The staff were helpful and nice and the environment was clean and quiet. I definitely would recommend the savory items here for breakfast but not really the sweet ones since they weren't impressive and were priced way too high for a single waffle.

Yelp
The definition of a cute breakfast joint is milk & honey. The decor is super homey and welcoming, love the chalkboard menus. Food itself was typical American breakfast food. We started off with an iced matcha and frittata- had to dock a star since the egg was kinda cold and the matcha had lumps. But the avocado toast was presented beautifully and tasted good and can't complain about the breakfast sandwich. Total came to around $40 which is pretty standard. Would def recommend!
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Stopped in for a coffee and ham and cheese croissant. I'd say coffee is decent and the ham and cheese croissant was fine but nothing incredible. Overall 3 stars for hitting the spot as needed but nothing overly special.

Jessica A.

Yelp
Amazing food. Really recommend. Service is good. The place has a really cute vintagey look.
google avatar

Kapris C.

Yelp
Came here while visiting Chicago, had a crave for a good sandwich or wrap and was recommended to come here. I got a Arnold Palmer and the Spicy Jerk Chicken wrap which was delicious. The service was excellent and the ambiance is pretty chill. Definitely a place to come have a nice sit and enjoy the view.
google avatar

Jasmin R.

Yelp
Came here to try to have breakfast. Stood inside the restaurant for a couple of minutes while the hostess and waitress passed by us numerous times with no acknowledgment. We were waiting to be seated outdoors on the patio, but when we were being ignored, we decided to leave. We won't be going back anytime soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Sweet little cafe. I like the bright and airy casualness of this cafe. You order at the counter and they deliver good to your table. Water, utensils and napkins are self service. Some of my favorite items include the oatmeal and breakfast burritos. Today I went with some la Carte menu items for a healthier meal and so for about 9$ got 2 poached eggs, 2 chicken sausages and some avocado slices. Healthy, satisfying and really tasty. Good lattes too:)
google avatar

Rafael B.

Yelp
Cute spot with some outdoor seating facing the street. Menu looked amazing, but I only grabbed a coffee, which was fine. $4 gets you a tall cappuccino. No guest wifi.

Yelp
First, I have been dining here for 8 years. It is consistently great! You can't go wrong here. Food, staff, atmosphere, all spot on and comfortable and keeps improving with time and new ownership. Bravo! Unfortunately the location can not control who walks in the door. Having seen countless adult patrons behaving badly have saved me a fortune in therapy cost because they make me feel so much better about some of my worst days. As a white male, I am dumbfounded by how stunted my own privilege can become in the face of true self-entitled self-interest. For example, read the review below claiming segregation. I guess a vaccine policy, mandated by law, technically could meet the Merriam-Webster definition of segregation in the most liberal sense, but so do the words health policy, or law-abiding or community consciousness. Milk and Honey doesn't make the law, they follow it. (Try processing that last sentence again!) Would the patron declined from admission volunteer to pay the associated fines if Milk and Honey admitted them and then were charged with breaking this ordinance? I think not. It probably would not work for her self interest. Thank God Milk and Honey "segregates" on behalf of a safer community. As a patron, I'm all for this type of segregation. I for one do not like mixing intellect and common sense with self-serving stupidity.

Rachel S.

Yelp
This review makes me incredibly sad. I have lived in this neighborhood since 2009 and Milk and Honey was my absolute favorite place. I probably used to eat here 3-4 times a week. Since ownership changed last year, they lost all of their staff (except Chef Jose). They have cut corners, risen prices, and the whole place has gone down hill. Nothing tastes as good anymore. In fact, it's bad. The oatmeal I ordered today was gross. Microwaved, soupy, watery. I wish Carol came back. I wish the old staff came back. I feel so badly for Jose, he should have gone with the others. He can no longer cook they way he used to. What a loss. Eat elsewhere, unfortunately.

Yelp
This place is seemingly pretty popular and pretty packed during peak hours. I came here once and it just struck me as average. The food was fine, but nothing to write home about. The service was nothing spectacular; you have to pick up your own food. I guess they meet all the requirements on the menu offerings for a brunch place, but I'd probably choose a different place, even have breakfast at home, before coming again.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
Was supposed to be a Kale Caesar Salad, but looked like mixed greens or bagged kale not sure but not what I usually order. I still can't believe I found a Bee in my salad. So Gross!

Kathleen H.

Yelp
Well what can I say really wanted pancakes but they did not have surgar free syrup diabetes need surgar free no you have to be healthy to go their also my husband was not to pleased with his breakfast either too bad because we lived in the neighborhood for over 40 years service no such thing all hand on. Oh well just getting to old to enjoy the neighborhood u think we created Huevos Rancherosmy husband had

Yelp
Milk & Honey is a super cute little breakfast spot with indoor & outdoor seating perfect for a quick morning or afternoon meal. You place your order up at the counter & pay upon ordering which is nice because once you're done with your meal, you're done. You can just roll right out without hesitation. My friend and I had breakfast here this past weekend on the patio and it was lovely. Nice staff, delicious food and reasonable prices. You can also grab drinks or eats to go if you like! I had an iced Lavendar latte which was tasty and enjoyable, perfect for the 95 degree heat. For eats, I went with the Grilled Panini with Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, and Cheddar cheese for $8.25. It also comes with tomatoes generally but I cut those out. There was so much egg on the sandwich and every element was fabulous! It was seriously a breakfast sandwich of my dreams. Plus it came with chips so was more than I could even it in one seating...it made breakfast anddddd lunch for me! Loved Milk & Honey Cafe and definitely see myself walking here again in the near future!
google avatar

Yelp
Milk & Honey is a gem on the Division restaurant strip. Their staff is extremely warm and accommodating. They usually seat us pretty quickly, even on a Saturday morning around 10am. Great iced coffee, iced matcha lattes, and they have (real) fresh-squeezed orange and grapefruit juices. Their BLT, which is already a triple-decker sandwich, was exponentially better when scrambled eggs & avocado were added upon request. After only half, I wasn't able to eat for the rest of the day, but it was well worth it. Highly recommend for brunch--everything on their menu is amazing!!
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
This place is super cute and really good if you know what to order. The staff is all so kind and nice. I would say my favorite thing that I have ordered from here is the smoked turkey reuben. If you dip that sandwich in some mustard, it is pretty perfect. I tried their Bloody Mary kit and I would probably suggest to only order that if you need convenience. The roast beef sandwich isn't that great, especially when you could have ordered the reuben. I would suggest this place for a quick bite and some caffeine.
google avatar

Grace B.

Yelp
DO NOT SLEEP ON THE KIDS MAC AND CHEESE!! I went here super hungover and couldn't stomach anything but pasta, so decided to order the kids mac and let me tell you it did not disappoint. Made fresh w Ditalini pasta, this sh*t was seriously fire and only $6
google avatar

Molly T.

Yelp
First time visiting this place and I would definitely recommend. Everything was very good and super filling. They had an area to fill up your own water and get syrup, hot sauce and silverware, which I appreciated. The service was great and I would definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Missy B.

Yelp
The service, staff and ambiance was excellent. Loved my matcha lavender latte. I recommend coming here for drinks only. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and it was bad/ the chicken was rubbery, the tomatoes tasted old and the lettuce looked like it was not clean with some parts as old. Cute place but I will only be returning for drinks to meet up with friends. Not the best cafe in Chicago or wicker park.
google avatar

Emma H.

Yelp
I love this place. It's quiet enough in the early morning to do some work on the computer. The food is delicious, comes out quick, and it's enough to save for later. The coffee is always good too. This place will always have my business. The baristas are great as well (might be biased because I used to be a barista).
google avatar

Jessie J.

Yelp
Worse avocado toast I have ever experienced. The avocado wasn't even fresh - it was that cheap avocado spread that is a bad substitute for the real thing. I expected way more from this place. How can a restaurant mess up avocado toast? Come on. Use fresh avocado!! Geez. I recommend walking down the street to either Janiks or Yolk. If they don't bother to use fresh avocados. They don't deserve your business.
google avatar

Fiona L.

Yelp
Wow has this place fallen. I live in the neighborhood and have been a customer for over 10 years and have LOVED this place. Went today and what a disappointment. Store bought bread rolls for sandwiches, when asked about their crab cake sandwich I was firmly told "no seafood in this establishment," and unable/refused to make a simple adjustment to a kids yogurt (asked for the fruit on the side, but was told it's all pre made and already mixed in). This is NOT the Milk & Honey you know and love. Very sad to see this place fall.
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
Experience: Milk & Honey Cafe had casual ambiance. It had a great combination of a coffeehouse/ restaurant feel. For this visit, I was able to order through the phone for take out. The process was very straight forward and when picking up my order, it fairly simple. Parking: Paid Street Parking available, but spots may be limited. Being on a busy street (Division Ave.) and by Wicker Park, parking may be very difficult depending on the day you go. With that said, take that into consideration when visiting this restaurant. Worth: Definitely would come back her for a dine-in experience. Food was good, I had a breakfast burrito with chips (As pictured below) and it was a good size!

Max K.

Yelp
I'm leaving a review partially because the review from the Karen named Alexis S. bothered me but also because the food, atmosphere, and staff are so excellent here. I've been going to milk n honey for years and am VERY aware they close at 3 - that's how the business operates and of course they'll start closing earlier. They're humans too with lives to get to. Anyways, you guys freaking rock. The lattes are cash. The sandwiches, chips, and pickles are to die for. And not to mention the breakfast items too. See you guys soon!
google avatar

Crystal K.

Yelp
Don't bother going if you have a pet. Literally just tried to order an iced coffee or have the host take my order in and they are not accommodating at all. Not worth it since there are so many dog friendlier places in wicker.
google avatar

Vicki M.

Yelp
This cafe is cute and homey with the perfect location on Division. They have a wide selection of food and drinks - nothing crazy but all the classics for a neighborhood cafe. The coffee was decent, and I enjoyed my tuna sandwich. I thought the tomato basil soup was a bit too salty for me, but otherwise I was happy with everything I got. Great spot to drop in for a quick breakfast or lunch, or to meet up with friends.

Steven E.

Yelp
Not the place it used to be... Went for lunch. My wife ordered the breakfast burrito which was nice. I ordered the sausage on baguette - thinking it was the old M&H. Pictured a sausage crumble with some extras (cilantro, etc.) mixed in. No such thing, straight up sausage link thing - just typical bar food. Soup was meh. They have also dropped the interesting salads and baked sweet stuff looked to be a step down. Read details of M&H demise online. Quite a story, and sad. No reason to go back again.
google avatar

Choua T.

Yelp
Very quick service. Once we placed our order we sat down and not too long after our food came out. It's been hard to find a good southern shrimp and grits (I'm from Atlanta) until now!! I will definitely be back for these here. The breakfast burrito was also really good with their potato chips which was really crispy. Waffle was ok, didn't really have any taste until you eat it with the peaches and syrup.

Michaela K.

Yelp
Here to agree with many others, this place has gone downhill! The shrimp and grits were one of my favorite breakfasts and it sounds like since management changed they no longer sell them. Bring the old ownership back!
