11 Essential Ice Cream and Water Ice Shops in Philadelphia

"Started in a home kitchen in 2012 and now scooping from multiple storefronts and farmers markets, this shop uses local Pennsylvania dairy to produce ultra-rich, creative flavors like tahini fudge swirl and Earl Grey with honeycomb, an extensive vegan slate, and occasional specials such as an artisanal ice cream taco paying homage to the Choco Taco." - Regan Stephens

"After building a substantial following through delivery and pop-ups, Milk Jawn opened a much-anticipated scoop shop on East Passyunk. The vibe here is joyful, with fun flavors like birthday cake, malted milk toffee crunch, and vegan earl grey with honeycomb. Tip: You can still order pints for delivery from Stone’s Beer & Beverage Market in Fairmount, or pickup at either Riverwards Produce." - Annemarie Dooling

The Best Soft Ice Cream In Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"This small Passyunk Square ice cream shop is probably the most popular one in the neighborhood. And the crowds aren’t wrong—it’s f*cking delicious. You can get waffle cones, pints, and ice cream sandwiches packed with flavors like cookie butter, Earl Grey with honeycomb, and Girl Scout peanut butter cookie. While many places try to do unique flavors like this, very few shops succeed in such a way that we could happily come back day after day." - candis mclean, alison kessler

Google
I ordered the toffee ice cream and it was so good, lots of toffee chunks and a nice buttery flavor. I would say their flavors in general are pretty creative and diverse, not something you can get at every ice cream shop. My only qualm is the pricing, I thought $6.75 for a small single scoop of ice cream is a bit extreme even considering the quality. There is no indoor seating and it’s a bit tight inside but there are a couple tables outside.

NANCY T

Google
Decent ice cream and service. Some cool flavors available, such as Tahini Fudge Swirl, and you can get a taste to see if you like it. Friendly staff member was helpful. The prices here are waaay expensive compared to what we are used to and we visit a lot of ice cream places.

Cindy P.

Google
I remember when they first arrived to passyunk and I can’t believe I am just now trying it! Really good ice cream! Spent around $15 for two single scoop ice cream cones. Not the most affordable ice cream but it was pretty good. Service was good and the scoopers are patient.

Max H.

Google
Very tasty ice cream that has a great chewy texture. The tahini and earl grey ice cream were delicious, and they have many other unique flavors to try

Google
The strawberry rhubarb ice cream was incredible and everything I was hoping it’d be. Key lime pie was also very good but a full scoop was a bit much after awhile. I think if it was vanilla with a key lime swirl it would have been less overpowering. But all of this is if I really needed to find a critique. Let’s be real I’d still eat both flavors again if offered to me.

Google
Delicious chocolate peanut butter and Troop Leader (Girl Scout Thin Mint) flavors, while the Vegan Troop Leader was also good (much less creamy, though, with a coconut flavor at the end). Great service and a cozy shop. Will definitely return if in the neighborhood!

Google
Incredible rich flavors! The cookie butter was impossibly buttery and the white coffee was delicious — it tasted like a chocolate covered espresso bean. The double vanilla was good but nothing special — I think the Trader Joe’s French vanilla ice cream is similar.

City Food Tours

Google
Some of the most creative and delicious ice cream in Philly. We placed a large group order as part of a birthday food tour driving all around the city, eating some of the best foods everywhere. The Milk Jawn team went above and beyond to pack and label everything, but the best was that they also surprised us with a t-shirt for the birthday guest and Milk Jawn stickers for everyone. The whole process was smooth, friendly, and incredibly well-handled. Our group couldn’t stop talking about their ice cream. Every person commented on the creamy texture and unique flavors. This was easily a highlight of the day.

Yelp
Earl Grey Honeycomb Icecream! Delicious! The place is expensive, but this is quality. Staff is kind enough. Clean atmosphere

Yelp
I hit up Milk Jawn 2 times in a day which lead to a pretty bad sugar high. I got the cookie butter (I really liked how it had whole pieces of cookie). I also really liked how creamy it was. The earl grey with honeycomb was my second option and it has this light earl grey taste with big chunks of honey. The line was so big for a Friday night so get there early!

Yelp
Loved that all the flavors were unique! I think they are also seasonal or rotated, so it's a new experience every time. I got the Tahini Fudge Swirl, which is truly nothing I've ever tried before - I was tempted to bring a pint home with me! The staff were also very friendly and nice, so a great experience all throughout!

Yelp
Let's go, Milk Jawn! Our little princess wanted some ice cream and I pulled Milk Jawn out of my Yelp collections after dinner nearby. I ordered the tahini vanilla fudge and the bits of tahini really bursted thru. Service was darn fast! There was waaaay more ice cream than I expected and I love that! Lol I can't wait to try one of their seasonal flavors!
google avatar

Yelp
I got the Earl Gray and honeycomb flavor after tasting their sample. Thankfully it was a chilly evening, so the line wasn't long and I got served pretty quickly. The earl grey and honeycomb flavors were perfectly balanced and you could taste them in every bite. I will be coming back for more and try other flavors. Milk Jawn is the real deal!
google avatar

Yelp
Great ice cream in Philadelphia! I got the chocolate scoop on a waffle cone. Chocolate was a nice rich flavor, and waffle cone very crunchy and not too sweet. One scoop is pretty large and costs $5.50. Fast and friendly service. Clean interior with limited standing space.

Yelp
Excellent! Has to be the best ice cream you'll ever have. I had a scoop of Milk and Cookies and a scoop of Malted Milk Toffee Crunch. It's so creamy, and great flavor. I will for sure be back...many times. (Excuse the photo I dug in before I remembered to take a pic)

Yelp
The ice cream flavors at Milk Jawn - birthday cake, milk & cookies, and earl grey with honeycomb - may not jump off the page when compared to the other creative flavors in the universe of ice cream shops here in Philadelphia, but the thoughtful attention to the details - the perfect, impossibly tender texture of the birthday cake, somehow suspended in creamy, smooth ice cream, the contrasting flavors of the apples and the pie crust and the vanilla ice cream base in the apple pie ice cream - make Milk Jawn the best ice cream shop in the city. I've never had a flavor at Milk Jawn that didn't taste like the absolute best version of what that flavor could be. I just had their strawberry rhubarb crisp this past weekend, and every bite had the perfect ratio of sweet-tart fruit and somehow-still-crunchy crisp mixed with the ice cream. My partner gets the milk & cookies flavor every single time because it's the best he has ever had, and and he still gets excited about it. Milk Jawn also has great vegan flavors. I brought a pint of the mango sticky rice flavor to a dinner and people straight up did not believe me when I told them it was vegan. To top it all off, the service is always super friendly - the staff are helpful if you ask them for suggestions and happy to let you taste flavors, which is always appreciated.

Yelp
Love a good ice cream spot in South Philly. They are open late til midnight (bonus!) and have lots of flavors to pick and try from. I got earl grey with honeycomb in a cup. The earl gray had a strong balanced flavor with the honeycomb, which gave a gooey texture with some crunch (could have used more crunch). The place is small though with not much seating, more of a grab and go. Will come back to try more flavors~
google avatar

Yelp
This is becoming my favorite new ice cream spot! They have excellent customer service, everyone is friendly and informative. They have a couple tables outside to sit and eat your ice cream that's really cool . They have rotating flavors as well as their standard. Last time I was there I had to Girl Scout cookie ice cream called Troop Leader, it was amazing. This time I tried the malted milk toffee crunch and i was not disappointed. Also brought my mom there over the weekend and she loved her milk and cookies in a waffle cone. Happy spring!!!

Yelp
I took a bite of my ice cream from Milk Jawn and almost wept inside because it's so, so far away from where I live and I just want easy access to this incredible ice cream forever. Absolutely incredible. If you're visiting Philly (or better yet, live here), I cannot recommend Milk Jawn enough. And if you're a tourist like me who doesn't know how to pronounce Schuylkill or Passyunk without help, "jawn" means any thing (person, place or thing). No place like jawn. This jawn is hoppin'. You get the drift! There's really good ice cream in NYC/Boston and then there's Milk Jawn, in my humble opinion. The texture is intensely creamy; the flavors are super saturated; the ice cream as a whole didn't leave my mouth really sticky. I basically tried all the flavors before deciding on the mint with straciatella - I used to be the biggest hater of mint in dessert before I realized that mint is the perfect after-meal flavor. Loved the generous chunks of dark chocolate embedded throughout. The real star was the pistachio. Not only are there actual hunks of pistachio, there was just so much pistachio flavor. I've had some truly terrible fluorescent green pistachio ice creams and the one here is truly in a league of its own. I hardcore regretted not getting the pistachio. They also have to-go pints. Parking is tricky in this neighborhood but I'm talking about some seriously good ice cream and, regardless of circumstance (cars backing up behind you, snow on the ground), the ice cream here is worth the effort!

Yelp
My favorite ice cream jawn in the city. The best is earl Frey with honeycomb crunch. And I usually get the toffee crunch too. Tried the super fold vanilla and will be delicious with my Nespresso dribbled over top

Yelp
I felt like a child again walking into my neighborhood ice cream parlor in the "80's". Milk Jawn has an awesome partnership with Mycopolitan for mushroom subscription pickup. As a child, getting ice cream was everything. I was not going to leave without getting some yummy, uniquely flavored vegan ice cream. Eat now or take for later Waffle tacos were being made as a walked in. Yum! Another South Philly gem. Staff is so kind.

Yelp
So I would always pass this up previously because of the name, but wow was I wrong. Need to try some more of their flavors, but I'd have to say this is the best ice cream in the city. A few others are close, and there's some top tier soft serve / gelato, but this is a very strong and likely contender for #1. Earl grey honeycomb was amazing, perfect creaminess and flavor. No aftertaste or chunkiness, just phenomenal. Pistachio also was excellent. As I ate the scoops, it got better as the ice cream became a little melty outside in the heat. The inside is small but the line moves pretty quick. Definitely stop here to try their ice cream! Thanks

Yelp
We were greeted by two workers and they tended to us right away. Small joint, but it's got such a fun and chill vibe. The quality of the ice creeks is pretty great, and while it can seem pricey, you can definitely tell this was made carefully so it would taste amazing. I also feel like their flavors have a clean taste if that make sense, in terms of ingredients. That isn't really something I could say for many ice cream trays I have tried! We had the tahini fudge swirl and it had such a good balance of flavors, as expected. It really had a good nuttiness, but in a way where the chocolate felt enhanced. Chocolate scoop was for my kid and not a single drop was left behind. Even that, a simple flavor, was very well made. I do wish they had more outdoor seating! Definitely worth checking out and sampling flavors. I love that they also have mango sticky rice ice cream, which is also vegan. We plan on buying a few pints to indulge on next week.

Yelp
Some of the best ice cream to be had in Philly with shops in East Passyunk and NoLibs. Interesting flavors and a substantial selection of vegan ice creams.
google avatar

Yesenia S.

Yelp
All I can say is wow!!! I tried the dairy free pb&j and it was amazing! There was plenty of flavors and happy they had some dairy free options. They were friendly and the service was great.
google avatar

Isabel L.

Yelp
The honeycomb earl grey is soooo delicious! I love that there's real chunks of honeycomb. Truly so unique and yummy. I also enjoyed the toffee. Overall the flavors and taste of the ice cream is so delicious! Definitely will be back
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
I've heard such great things about this place so I had to pop in to try. It was an awesome experience. There are tons of unique and tasty flavors. Sample quite a few and end up going for the Double Fold Vanilla. Always have to go with the classic on my first try. I'll be back for Pistachio I was also delighted to see the amount of vegan options on the menu.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
My 5/5 rating is simply for how good the ice cream is here! I tried several of them and wanted it all, but we all got different ones and tried each other's after ordering. Simply delicious! The girl who took our order wasn't the most friendly, but I've come to learn that people from Philly can be that way!
google avatar

Sohaib K.

Yelp
Easily the best ice cream in philly. Unique flavors and a quality vegan selection as well.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
I have already had a pint of milk and cookies from Di Bruno's but this was first time at the shop. If was delish. I really enjoyed their vegan options, I got vegan mango sticky rice and vegan pb&j. Staff was helpful in choosing. The inside is a bit small but there are some tables outside that were nice to sit at on a warm fall evening. Will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Komal R.

Yelp
Got the Earl Gray with Honeycomb and husband got the Malted Milk Toffee Crunch. Both were so good but the Earl Gray with Honeycomb has to be one of the most deliciously creative combos I have tried. The guys behind the counter were super friendly and very good at small talk :) I will definitely be back for the Earl Gray!

Yelp
Milk Jawn is my favorite place in Philly to get ice cream. When I lived in South Philly, I used to visit their stand at the East Passyunk farmer's market and buy pints from them. So when they opened their first brick and mortar, my husband and I became regular visitors and for good reason. The ice cream is high quality and I like the consistency: creamy without being too rich. As someone who has a dairy sensitivity, I love the fact that there are so many vegan versions of the dairy version of a flavor. Especially because most ice cream shops will usually offer only one or two dairy free options and/or offer sorbets as their dairy free option. Also, Milk Jawn's dairy free ice cream is actually really good. I would argue as good as dairy ice cream. If you're debating between getting your ice cream in a cup, sugar cone, or waffle cone, I would personally go with the sugar cone. Out of all the ice cream shops, I've been to, Milk Jawn has the best sugar cone; I love the flavor and how crispy it is. Ice Cream Ordered: * worth trying - [Pistachio*]: If I ate dairy ice cream, this would be one of my favorite flavors but I just have to be content with taking one (or two) spoonfuls from my husband when he orders it. You can tell the pistachios they use are high quality and the brittle takes the flavor to the next level. Milk Jawn, please make a dairy free version of this. I'll be patiently waiting haha. - [Vegan Cinnamon Cookie Jawn*]: This is one of their winter seasonal flavors. I originally didn't like this flavor when I first tried it but it gradually grew on me. I didn't love the cookies they made for the flavor but I like the additional textural layer it added and the flavor wasn't too sweet. - [Vegan Mango Sticky Rice*]: This is my go-to flavor. I like that it really captures the essence of mango sticky rice because of the coconut base and mango puree. I think the addition of the coconut sticky rice was a nice touch as well. - [Vegan Earl Grey with Honeycomb]: I don't personally like the taste of whatever earl grey tea they use. -[Lemon Curd with Blueberry Basil Swirl*]: The flavor is bright and tart and really refreshing on a hot day. -[Vegan Caramel Apple Pie*]: This is one of their fall seasonal flavors. If you ever wanted apple pie as an ice cream, this is it. I feel like the summer version of this is the Vegan Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp flavor, which I comparatively like a little better. -[Vegan Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp*]: This is one of their summer seasonal flavors. Think strawberry ice cream 2.0. I like the slight tartness from the rhubarb. - [Vegan Matcha Strawberry*]: If this was more of a permanent flavor, this would be tied with the Vegan Mango Sticky Rice for my favorite flavor. I love almost anything matcha flavored and Milk Jawn truly honoured the matcha in this flavor. Would I go back? : In a heartbeat! I like how Milk Jawn is always coming up with new flavors, with a regularly rotating menu, but knows when to bring back customer favorites. Check their Instagram (@milkjawn) for new/returning flavor updates. And I'm so happy for them on their more recent second location in Fishtown. It attests to their success, which is well deserved.
google avatar

Andrew K.

Yelp
Have been here a few times and it's always a delicious way to end the night. They do rotate flavors and try some interesting combinations of things. This time we tried the butterscotch krimpet flavor, which was delicious and reminded me of eating plenty of these as a child. They're not shy about letting you taste-test, which is obviously a plus. And the cones are freshly made and delicious. I will say we've been here a few times when the line is out the door, so you may sometimes wait a little bit of time but it moves quickly. And this is the first time I noticed they had outdoor seating, which was nice. Easily accessible from nearby restaurants.

Yelp
Picked up a pint of Earl Grey w Honeycomb at Milk Jawn a few weeks ago after sampling it as part of a Yelp Event introducing us to some of the exceptional small batch ice cream parlors around Philadelphia. The small scoop in cup was so delicious that I wanted to bring some home for the family. They sure appreciated it. The texture was again very creamy with no ice crystals. The Earl Grey Tea flavor was mild and tasted a little like lavender. The Honeycomb looked like golden syrup mixed in bands throughout, and tasted something of bittersweet honey. The effect on our tongues was complementary, as the sweet and slightly salty combined and melted in our mouths. Totally impossible to put down as we finished off the pint with direct spoon attack in minutes. Had it been a gallon, the impact would have been the same. Deliciously addictive. Gotta go back to Milk Jawn for more!
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
One of my favorite ice cream shop. First time I tried them was at Herman's; before they got a brick and mortar shop and they were good then and is still good. There is not a flavor that I don't like. Love their mango sticky rice, thai tea, earl grey and love when they have their Girl Scout cookies flavor! My pup also loves the pup cup! Will always be back!
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
Milk Jawn needs no introduction. I absolutely love the cool funky flavors they come up with - honestly so innovate AND delicious. Recently tried the matcha strawberry and it was so good omg! The service is amazing as always- very friendly and personable.

Yelp
A friend got these catered for her birthday. Brilliant idea! They were frozen solid. Like rock hard. But it didn't take too long to thaw. I had the malted milk toffee crunch. It was delicious and so creamy! Great idea!!!!

Yelp
After a Halloween Haunting done in Langhorne, me and my family was on our way home to NE Philly. I came across Milk Jawn on Facebook, and decided to stop by. Yes we drove from Langhorne to South Philly just to try them out. Heads up folks, parking was horrendous. There is no parking unless you willing to park blocks away and walk. Luckily we found a spot one block away. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted. I heard about the taste test, so I had ask for a couple of spoons before ordering. I had try the Buttermilk Peach and Mango Sticky Rice. Didn't like the Buttermilk Peach as it is pretty tangy. Mango sticky rice was pretty light if you likes light flavors. Unfortunately, I want something heavier that night so I opted for the double scoop. One scoop of Earl Grey with Honeycomb and the other scoop is Malted Milk Toffee Crunch. My favorite is Earl Grey with Honeycomb. Hubby got the Chocolate Peanut Butter, which he says he can't barely taste the peanut butter, just the chocolate. My daughter got the Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp, she says is a bit too tangy for her. They should have taste test it before they decided!
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Exceptional ice cream place in South Philly. I had the Malted Milk Toffee Crunch and PB&J flavors and both were absolutely amazing. My girlfriend got the Milk & Cookies which she also really enjoyed. Love the neighborhood, unassuming exterior, and vibe inside. So many unique and enticing flavors - excited to go back!!
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
Honestly some of the best ice cream I have ever had. Smooth, tasty, amazing. Even on a cold May evening, there was a line out the door. I will be back.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
As a self-proclaimed ice cream connoisseur I can definitely say this ice cream is incredible! The flavors rival Jeni's, which is one of my all time favs. I had the lemon blueberry and it was amazing. We also picked up a pint of peanut butter and jelly and wow wow wow. Love this ice cream!
google avatar

Courtney J.

Yelp
Delicious and unique flavors! We walked there after a night of drinking at Bok bar, the perfect late night snack. Friendly service and cool name. Will be back again!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
Take my money! One of my favorite local South Philly ice creamery around. The flavors are creative and texture is smooth and creamy. Each flavor is robust and packed with fresh ingredients! This has become a family weekly or so trip for us with the kids, and of course the kids give their stamps of approval too.
google avatar

Sidney Z.

Yelp
This Ben & Jerry's and 31 Flavors boy (me) is hard pressed to accept the new peeps on the block, ala: Jeni's Van Leeuwen McConnells Bobas Yeah sure Häagen-Dazs is very doable but when I "Go Ice Cream" I go Bens and 31! That is until this past Sunday here in South Phillie, my son introduced me to Milk Jawn Ice Cream. First off, the line to get served was around the block. That got my attention. Second off, the menu here is short and sweet (no pun intended). Some pretty good looking basics and the same go for the very attractive specials. I had a scoop in a waffle cone of their Tahini Fudge Swirl that was out of this world. I totally loved it! I think this brand is a local Philadelphia thing, so I enjoyed the hell out of this scoop until I come back. In the mean time, I'll stay with my oldies but goodies with Milk Jawn in my thoughts.
google avatar

Retna S.

Yelp
Great spot to cool down in a warm day. The crowd moved pretty fast because they have sufficient staff to get the line moving. I tried white coffee and it was pretty good. I could taste the coffee flavor but not overpowering. I tried key lime pie. It was tart and definitely sweeter than my white coffee to balance out the tartness.
google avatar

Lana S.

Yelp
After dinner I wanted some ice cream so I saw that Milk Jawn was a 10 min walk from where I was :) I walked in and the place was so cute! There are even tables outside where you can enjoy your ice cream. I love how they have a variety of flavors and also a bunch of vegan flavors (immediately let me vegan friends know). I decided to go with a seasonal flavor - key lime pie. This cream was so so good. Tart and sweet with a bunch of graham cracker crumbs. Yumm! I would def. Come back again especially with my vegan friends to try more flavors :)
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
This is the best ice cream I have ever had. The ladies that served me found a way to get an entire scoop of ice cream all the way to the bottom of the waffle cone. It was fresh, smooth and tasty! Good luck finding parking in this area, but it was so good I went back in to get a pint to take home.
google avatar

Yuran S.

Yelp
Probably the best pistachio ice cream I've ever tasted! I was in town for a conference and this spot was right near my Airbnb so I went two days in a row. The ice cream itself was so creamy and there were crunchy bits of pistachio mixed in, which is my favorite part! Definitely recommend 10/10!!!
google avatar

Laila D.

Yelp
After enjoying a night feasting nearby, we were walking to our car and passed this cute place and in I went after reading "small batch ice cream". It looked good! Wow, so many flavors and we were full but never too full for ice cream! We ordered the vegan coconut mango and sticky rice ice cream and it was absolutely creamy and divine! We devoured it and will be back for more! The service was friendly and the lines move fast.
google avatar

Eisha K.

Yelp
I didn't even have the ice cream - I just tried my friends and I absolutely loved the earl grey flavour. I'll be back again to try it! Always love when ice cream shops have unique flavours:)
google avatar

Tulshi P.

Yelp
I have never been to the location but I have ordered pints and tasted quite a few of their flavors when visiting family in the area. I love their milk and cookies, pistachio and lemon blueberry. There's one more that I'm not sure what it's called buts it's like birthday cake. I can't wait to try more of their seasonal flavors!
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
If I'm not getting water ice in Philadelphia, you'll most likely find me over at Milk Jawn getting ice cream. They are my favorite ice cream place in Philadelphia mainly because of the unique flavors they have and also the abundant vegan flavors you can choose from. The staffs are also very friendly and will let you sample the flavors before you pick your choice. I hope they continue to churn out some creative flavors!!

Di S.

Yelp
Enjoyed the matcha strawberry but thought that nearly $9 was a lot for one scoop. Would come back if I'm in the area!
google avatar

Grace H.

Yelp
Wow wow wow what an incredible ice cream shop. The options at Milk Jawn are varied and creative and both vegan and non vegan options are solid, with a good amount of creaminess. I got a scoop of the earl grey with honeycomb and a scoop of the pistachio flavor and both portion sizes were generous. The flavors were spot on!!!

David P.

Yelp
It was a beautiful day and I was feeling the need for some ice cream. Milk Jawn was close by and I'm so happy it was! The options all sounded delicious and I took a risk (taste testing is for wimps!) on the lemon curd blueberry basil - totally delicious!!! I'll definitely try some other flavors there the next time I'm in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Tori F.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream with fun flavors. They offer a few rotating flavors as well. Choose from single and double scoops on either a sugar or waffle cone - super simple and easy. You can taste test flavors before deciding what you'd like. One scoop is enough for me - they don't skimp! I've had their chocolate PB, cold brew, and toffee nut flavors all of which were creamy and had plenty mix-ins for the cold brew and toffee flavors.
