The Best Coffee Shops in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Once home to Blue Moon Coffee Cafe, Milkweed’s emerald-painted shop is one of Lake Street’s best spots for a coffee break. This shop has everything you could ask for on a coffee menu: soul-stirring espresso, hazelnut milk lattes, and classic cappuccinos. But the real treasure is its specialty menu, which has both coffee drinks and non-coffee, almost potion-like brews, like the Jitterbug Perfume, made with beet powder, schisandra berry syrup, black seed oil, and rose water. Another plus: Milkweed is Celiac-friendly." - Stacy Brooks

Google
Lovely little shop. They had a lot more unique teas than what I’ve seen at other places along with interesting coffee specials such as a squash latte for fall. They serve all sorts of gluten free items such as pastries and ice cream.

Looking for a morning pick me up? Plenty of natural light and an incredibly eclectic yet mellow musical selection energizes this well curated space. It’s all things Lake Street plus a touch of local neighborhood flair. The drink menu is very unique and delicious, consider this your home office treat!

Cute coffee shop in Minneapolis off Lake Street. Great ambiance. Friendly staff. Clean. Small in size but large in character. Enjoyed hot tea and a slice of lemon cake

After researching on what coffee shops are open after 5 o’clock I decided on this one. It was closer to my location. And they had plenty free street parking. I entered, and I wasn’t greeted by the one employee there, or not acknowledged by them, which I kind of thought was not a great first impression. I was looking at the menu and at the plants. But it wasn’t until almost 4 or so minutes passed by before they decided to say something. And I did end up getting that E. Lake Horchata drink which I thought it was really on the sweet side which is what I kind of expected. There was plenty of seating of folks. The vibes were nice, but I didn’t stay long.

Milkweed is a classic, friendly neighborhood coffee shop. Very nice to have on the corner. Good coffee, calm vibe, some treats, definitely not a sterile chain coffee store. The 12oz cappuccino, 🧐 while not a 6oz classic was tasty. And their 12oz cappuccino was very drinkable as compared to the bizzaro 20oz cappys out there. A quiet place to sit and drink and read and hang out. Street parking = easy-peasy. Fun art, books to read. Highly recommended.

Google
I'm always on the lookout for a double shot of espresso that balances sour and bitter with just enough earthy sweetness to ground it. Milkweed nailed it. Great chat with lovely staff. Lots of sunlight and plants have the space feeling airy and welcoming. What a treat.

I ordered a latte and it was quite possibly the nastiest latte I’ve ever had the displeasure of tasting. There was no flavor and the coffee tasted like coffee from two weeks ago. So gross! What a waste of $8. Service and atmosphere was great - but the coffee is absolutely terrible.

Google
I go here from time to time and the drinks are middle of the road for the price but it's conveniently located and a great place to take meetings. Today I got a real iffy vibe from a (male presenting) employee, who was directing/training a (female presenting) employee and being excessively blunt, giving them a super hard time--caused me to question the culture here

Yelp
The vibe is nice, there are a variety of edibles and CBD drinks and seems like a good selection. The matcha latte was terrible. I felt like I was drinking powder. Should have tried something else.

Yelp
Milkweed was such a cute coffee shop! The decor inside was green and bright with space for people to come together and hang out. The service was great as well, the employees were sweet and willing to help us pick from their vast menu. The drinks were delicious. I got the rose matcha and my husband got their classic cortado!

Yelp
After researching on what coffee shops are open after 5 o'clock I decided on this one. It was closer to my location. And they had plenty free street parking, which is a major plus. I entered, and I wasn't greeted by the one employee there, or not acknowledged by them. Which I could understand since they were making a drink but kind of thought was not a great first impression. I was looking at the menu and at the plants for a few minutes. But it wasn't until almost 4 or so minutes passed by before they decided to say something and another person entered behind me. And I did end up getting that E. Lake Horchata drink which I thought it was on the sweet side which is what I kind of expected. There was plenty of seating, both tables and chairs, a couch and some high seated chairs. I didn't stay there long since I was busy but would love to come back for a longer stay.

Yelp
Coffee is ok. The ambiance is great. They default the tip amount during payment which is a turn off.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped in here for a quick coffee after visiting Hymie's next door and it didn't disappoint! They have a lot of creative drinks that I've never really seen before. I got the smoke and mirror's espresso drink which has orange syrup and smoked sea salt among other yummy ingredients. It was really good but definitely on orange-y side. If I'm in the area again, I would definitely go back and try something else.

Yelp
If you compared it to Dogwood down the block, it's much calmer and interpersonal. The Espresso is good and the general atmosphere is fairly pleasant.

Yelp
After a long bicycle ride, it's nice to stop somewhere that is friendly and has a great vibe. That's what I found on my visit to Milkweed. I picked an iced Solar Eclipse because I love licorice tea. This iced tea was different: lemonade, activated charcoal, honey, lemon and licorice tea. Different, but good (but honestly, I had to add a little cream & sugar since it was so strong). I didn't think the prices were outlandish, but then it's local and not a Star$ chain. I will be back (by bike again) and will try one of their lattes (maybe the Milkweed Latte with CBD?).

Yelp
Always an interesting drink to be had and really nice staff. I always try to stop when I'm in that neighborhood. I highly recommend it!

Yelp
Amazing drink selection. Amazing ingredients. Also happens to be celiac safe. I wish I lived closer but it is worth the drive. Thanks so much Milkweed! Keep it up

Yelp
Came here after a long bike ride for a coffee and a little sustenance - it delivered! Great almond (or was it coconut?) milk latte and one of the best gluten free chocolate chip banana bread slices I've ever had! A really thick slice (which was good, cause I worked up an appetite) and really moist and chocolatey. I would bet non-gf folks couldn't tell the difference. My husband also got a gf donut which was equally delicious and dairy free as well! The COVID process was straightforward and limited contact. The employee was at the front door behind plexi-glass- we walked up, paid, waited, and received our order through pass-thru from outside. We also ate/drank at a nice little outdoor table a ways away from the door (this was in September). We've happily come back here a couple times since! Will probably try some of their other stuff!

Yelp
I was a bit underwhelmed after my visit to Milkweed. It has a super interesting and unique concept, and I appreciate a lot of the sustainability they promote, but the coffee was disappointing. I ordered a latte with almond milk, which was homemade (that's very cool!), but I just didn't love it. It was alright, but not something I think I would get again. The staff was friendly and the interior was bright and airy, but it was definitely not my favorite.

Yelp
Neat little coffee shop. Definitely a more relaxed vibe than Dogwood down the street. I wanted a drip but they were out because it was later in the day so I got an Americano, which tasted good and strong. It is a little expensive, but it's a neat little independent coffee shop so not sure what people expect? Go to Starbucks if you have an issue with that...

Yelp
Great place for the neighborhood folks of Longfellow. Friendly service by the lady working behind the counter. I think she was the same person working for Blue Moon before Milkweed took over. Lots of bright lights in the front of the coffee shop. In the back there is a spot for kids to play with toys. Great selection of coffee. I will come back soon!

Yelp
Milkweed is unfailingly friendly and welcoming, a real community asset. There's an array of healthy and tasty drinks, and very tasty pastries that happen to be gluten free. For a detailed review see johntannersbbqblog and search "milkweed"

Yelp
My partner and I ventured to Milkweed on a Saturday morning for coffee before exploring Hymie's Vintage Records (right next door). Milkweed's setting is very lovely - big windows that let the sun shine in, a live guitarist strumming instrumental music, plenty of tables to sit at as well as comfy couches. To my surprise, all of Milkweed's bakery/food items are gluten free (and some vegan)! Amazing! Lots of options to choose from too, including chocolate cake, banana bread, muffins, paninis, and quiches. We got an iced coffee and drip coffee, the banana bread and the kimchi panini. The coffee was delicious! The food was also great (you would hardly notice its gluten free). I loved the flavor combo of gouda, kimchi and BBQ sauce for the panini as well. However, the panini seemed a tad expensive ($6-$8) for a very small sandwich. Nonetheless, we'll definitely be coming back to Milkweed!

Yelp
Randomly stopped off that this spot before they were closing so I haven't experienced their sit down vibe (seems like a good study spot). Interior is beautiful. The barista who was closing this past Saturday made THE BEST MIEL IVE EVER HAD!!!!! She blew my mind! Definitely coming back to this spot.

Yelp
Two stars for atmosphere. -3 stars for price quality and customer service. My boyfriend and I ordered a large iced dirty chai and a large iced red eye. The chai tasted weird was watery and did not have a shot of espresso. The waitress seemed confused when we ordered the red eye. The two drinks plus the banana bread came out to $26 after tip which is outrageous considering the low quality beverages. The banana bread was obviously days old extremely dry. Save yourself half months rent and go to Dogwood across the street. Please. ‍‍ First of all I'd like to say that if I could write a review for yelp I'd give it to stars because I have voice memo this review three times and it hasn't been working. Now to the review of milkweed which is a lackluster establishment. Two stars for atmosphere as it is bright and has a nice plants. -3 stars for the quality customer service and price. Well it has a large and diverse menu the two drinks that my boyfriend I ordered were both terrible. I ordered a large iced dirty chai which came out without a shot of espresso and was watery and vile. My boyfriend ordered a large ice redeye which the waitress was rude about. In addition to banana bread the total price came out to $26 after tip and outrageous cost for such terrible food. The banana bread was very dry very very dry. Yeah we neither one of us finish our drinks. Save yourself a half a months rent and go to Dogwood across the street for a much better coffee on God! Thanks so much for reading. Sincerely nougat

Yelp
This is a great place if you like earthy coffee. No sugar. I have no clue what some of the drinks were and for 38$ what in the world?! Give me some sweetness!! Otherwise the food was pretty good, but I think they ordered the food. The place is beautiful with plants and decor, but the drinks don't match it, along with the attitudes.

Melissa R.

Yelp
I literally teared up when I tasted the fresh gluten free banana bread. One of the owners is celiac so I felt very comfortable eating here. The coffee is great, yummy healthy snacks are available, and they make a variety of their own nondairy milks! The atmosphere is homey with great customer service. I love having a bar to sit at if I'm feeling social, or tucking myself away by the window to read my book.

Yelp
Milkweed is one of my new favorite local coffee shops. Good coffee and they always have interesting drinks on their menu. They make their own non-dairy milks there too, which are tasty. Good aesthetics with lots of plants. Plus you can stop into Hymie's record store next door.

Yelp
We used to be patrons of the Blue Moon, but we thought we would give the Milkweed a chance. It looked so cute and welcoming. We walked in and it definitely was upgraded. Cute and quaint...which is why they got a star. We order 4 different drinks and some pastries for $38.00. Everyone had a blueberry muffin, but me. I went for the strawberry, goat cheese, and black pepper scone. Yeah...what was I thinking? The barista said it was delish...ah...no. It would have been nice to know that it was a GF scone. It was horrible. Other bakeries or local coffee shops LABEL their pastries so that patrons are knowledgeable about their order and there are no surprises. After choking it down without coffee because it took FOREVER to make a chai tea latte for my hubby, the barista told him that it was unsweetened and he could help himself to the simple sugar or honey. What?!?!? He tried it and grimaced...watery and absolutely no flavor even after attempting to add some sweetness. The rest of us slowly, but surely got our drinks. They all we're HORRIBLE. Note to the barista...a Miel latte is a Spanish drink that is sweetened with honey and spices. Make it the way it suppose to be NOT how you think it should be, which is a weak overly spiced concoction that tastes shitty. I couldn't even finish it. After we all left, we realized that we didn't smell any espresso being made. Usually you get that waft of espresso that puts you in a good mood when baristas are making drinks. It occurred to us as we entered the next coffee shop none of us smelled anything remotely smelling of coffee or even hearing the expression machine grinding. Maybe that is why it sucked. Nothing tasted like coffee. One of the other reviewers mentioned that the coffee tasted like old coffee...how about weak coffee that is served at a church and the kind that you have to put something in to disguise how awful it was? Needless to say, do not GO to the Milkweed if you are expecting an upgraded Blue Moon...I would much rather have old chairs, games, and GOOD coffee.

Yelp
Not a good experience: firstly, the owners/employees should be thrilled to see customers, being a new business, right? Well, not so much here at Milkweed! We were met with passive-agressive weirdness and staring at each other by the owners while we the customers noticed. Now...the coffee review: terrible, just terrible. Like, think about a bag of coffee you found in a clearance aisle at Target and hastily made at home in an ole coffeemaker.

Yelp
Great quality specialty coffees. The turmeric coffee was great and unique. Lots of home-made milk alternatives. The nut bar pastry tasted fresh and delicious. Nice neighborhood cafe ambiance. Keep up the great work!

Mary J.

Yelp
I love going to the Milkweed for a variety of reasons. Their specialty coffee drinks are different and delicious. I had the Dirty Sailor this morning with unusual ingredient that blend together for a not too sweet taste treat. I love the way the Milkweed composts cups, coffee grounds etc even letting me take these things for my compost pile. When remodeling, much of the furniture was repurposed. The outside seating in the summer is peaceful and again, wash tubs from days of yore, are repurposed to hold plants. A quaint, friendly neigborhood coffee house worth visiting.

Veronica V.

Yelp
I was a lover of blue moon and milkweed is an upgrade! The owner is very accommodating--I completely forgot to bring my wallet and she offered to let me use Venmo. How nice! The Gluten free pastries were a great option for my partner who's celiac. And as someone who isn't GF myself, the donut was delicious! The place has been spruced up and has a pretty atmosphere. Parents: the back section of the coffee shop is a dream! Legos, fisher price food toys, dinosaurs, what more could we ask for? My little was happy playing the whole time I was there. It's so nice to get to enjoy a coffee hands free. Ill be returning for sure. This is our new favorite place!

Yelp
Unfortunately, this long-awaited replacement to the Blue Moon (which formerly occupied the space) does not live up to my expectations. The first couple of times I had a latte there it was really not good - burnt tasting and kind of bitter. I persisted and today had a really good latte. However, the baked goods are totally unremarkable and not worth the price - and a very small selection the times I have been there. Today I got a doughnut that was lemon with raspberry frosting. Sounded delicious but I couldn't even finish it. And I love doughnuts!! The new interior is cheerful but not at all warm and welcoming. A good indication of the change is that at 8 a.m. I was the only customer. No one at a table with a computer drinking coffee (the person, not the computer), no one in line to get take out. Maybe everyone is at the State Fair, but my guess is that the long wait for the opening plus the other changes have hurt it. I will likely go there for an occasional coffee, but it is not going to be my new favorite, which really saddens me.

Katie G.

Yelp
Delightful! The quiche is absolutely fabulous - on par with quiche from France with a great crust. Delicious food and drinks. A cute area for kids in the back. Everything is GF and does not disappoint.

M. M.

Yelp
The first time I went I had a latte. My friend had an Americano. Neither of liked our drinks. Poor quality coffee, nothing to eat. I want back a second time and ordered a dark roast. I didn't like it. It was pretty quiet both times too. I missed the communities that would hang at the Blue Moon. For me, I want neighborhood character (all welcome) and better coffee.
