Milli by Metric is Avondale’s New Community Cafe | Eater Chicago

"Set inside a 12,000-square-foot former antiques warehouse, this bright, sprawling café and roastery brings Metric Coffee to Avondale as a welcoming daytime third place and the company’s new headquarters. For now it’s open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., pouring coffee alongside a pastry program that’s already made it a popular destination; breakfast and lunch will roll out soon, followed by dinner, plus natural wine, beer, and kombucha on tap and a dedicated pickup window to ease long lines. Designed by co-founder Darko Arandjelovic, the space is bright and inviting with marble counters, custom lighting, and lush greenery, preserving much of the building’s original character and shifting naturally from day to night. There’s a long communal table up front, two additional seating rooms, plentiful power outlets, and free Wi‑Fi, and the team wants it to grow into a European-style neighborhood gathering spot where sharing tables feels natural—already, students, quilters, chess players, knitters, photographers, and artists have settled in to work. Pastry chef Lou Turner leads a nostalgia-driven, hyper-seasonal menu that draws on local farms: a campfire cookie inspired by childhood s’mores on a Pennsylvania Christmas tree farm, rotating bakes like zucchini bread, and current offerings such as croissants, fig cross-laminated buns, raspberry rye éclairs, and canelés. Looking ahead, expect small plates, sandwiches, and dinner fare, community events, and an outdoor patio by next spring." - Jeffy Mai

Milli By Metric - Review - Avondale - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Local coffee roaster Metric already has a coffee shop on the near West Side, but they’re officially diving into all-day cafe territory with Milli. In addition to coffee and other drinks, they have pastries like pain suisse, fig buns, and garlic twists. The plan is to expand the menu, so keep an eye out for new dishes." - John Ringor

The Best Guide to Chicago Restaurants in FX’s ‘The Bear’ Seasons 1-4 | Eater Chicago

"Metric Coffee is one of the most revered coffee roasters in Chicago. Later this year, the operation will shift to Avondale, where they’ll roast coffee and open a wine bar, all-day cafe, and pizza spot. Needing an under-construction space to represent chef Adam’s (Adam Shapiro) upcoming restaurant, The Bear crew turned to Metric. Viewers get a closer look at the space in Season 4, Episode 3." - Ashok Selvam

Chicago’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings, Spring 2025 | Eater Chicago

"An ambitious new café-and-restaurant project from the team behind Metric Coffee (Xavier Alexander, Darko Arandjelovic) that includes a secluded patio intended for sipping wine, hanging out and perhaps listening to live music — co-owner Xavier Alexander compares it to Bacchanal Wine Bar in New Orleans. The plan calls for all-new pastries (they shut down their Brite brand last year), pizza service, a back area for private events and pop-up dinners, and a shift of roasting operations to Avondale that will free up seating at the West Town location (which will be retooled as more of a showroom for high-end home espresso machines). The space will open in phases under a new name, with a late spring or early summer debut anticipated." - Ashok Selvam

Google
Very unique pastries and coffee options. Awesome place to check out. Don’t think it can be a regular spot for me. Overall food quality was good and the nitro cold brew was also delicious. Service was great. Be prepared to wait. There was a consistent line during my whole visit

Milli by Metric is an excellent venue for catching up with friends, study, work, conversation over coffee. With three large spacious rooms with plenty of seating for everyone, Milli welcomes everyone to stay comfortably without time limit. You can expect welcoming friendly service, excellent lattes, fresh roasted coffee beans for sale (they can ground to espresso grade upon request!), and quality sound system to immerse yourself in their eclectic choice of music and your work. Highly recommend you try their offering of pastries and cookies! My favorites are their garlic twist, ham and cheese pan suisse and sea salt chocolate chip cookie.

Google
GORGEOUS aesthetics. Fantastic flat white with oat milk. If coming on a Saturday, prepare to wait at least an hour. Extremely slow service but I think that's because they're making every cup with love. The manager was considerate and kind enough to bring everyone mini cups of hot coffee while we waited in line outside in 10⁰ weather. Specially curated wine and beans. Dear Milli: Offer some vegan pastries and I'll bump you up to 5 stars! There is a HUGE market for it in this city. Think I may have found my new favorite Chicago coffee spot.

Google
Lovely space! I really like the indoor space, very well decorated and with a lot of seating areas to hang out or work. There is a wide food and drink menu + some merch and coffee beans. My coffee was really good. We also tried a few viennoiseries, very well executed. I think my favorite one is the pain au chocolat.

Google
The ambience and interior design here is straight out of movie scene. A lot pf people come here to work, so the tables turnover are quite low. I arrived there around 9.45 AM and almost all tables were occupied. The coffees were great, pastries also superb but the selection was already limited even though I came early-ish. Overall, a very convenient place to work and definitely will come back.

Google
I am obsessed with this cafe. Not only did I found the best pain au chocolat I’ve ever had(amazing lamination, perfect amount of chocolate, beautiful chocolate glaze), but the pour over coffee experience was perfection— crafted by a $10K automatic pour-over machine, single-origin beans neatly lined in dosing tubes. This is coffee engineering at its finest—where technology, precision, and quality control work in harmony to brew perfection!

Google
Espresso so good I had to order it twice in a row, & also bought a bag of beans to take home. 10/10 atmosphere. I came too late in the day to get a pastry as they were all sold out (a very good sign that they’re delicious). I will be back many many times.

There’s a new coffee spot by Metric Coffee called Milli by Metric! Amazing drink and pastry menu, along with a chill aesthetic that could have you relax and sip something good all day ☕️ Noticed some tap lines for beers in the future, so can’t wait to see what’s eventually on. Yelp
Milli by Metric has quickly become one of my favorite stops for a quality coffee, and their iced vanilla latte is a standout. The espresso is smooth and flavorful without any bitterness, and the vanilla is perfectly balanced--sweet enough to complement the coffee but never overpowering. The texture is silky, the ice ratio is spot-on, and every sip tastes thoughtfully crafted. You can tell they take pride in the drinks they make. The atmosphere at Milli by Metric adds to the experience: clean, modern, and welcoming. It's a great WFH spot. If you're looking for a consistently great iced vanilla latte--refreshing, creamy, and incredibly satisfying--look no further. Milli by Metric nails it every time. & make sure you get iced I tried hot one time and it was not quite the same. The garlic twist got me on chokehold, great savory with a hint of sweet. This has been my new pick me up spot after daycare drop while enduring a solo parenting week.

Yelp
Wonderful space to do work or study You order at the counter and pick up your order on the side. We came on a Saturday morning and it really started to pick up around 9:30-10am (the line was out the door). I really enjoyed the cappuccino, super smooth and the espresso cut through the milk very well. I believe they mentioned they use the En Masse beans for their cafe drinks. For food I tried the kale danish (can't remember the exact name) and black sesame eclair. The danish was good, it would've been perfect if it was heated up. The pastry was buttery and flaky. The eclair was also good, the black sesame flavor was subtle in a good way. This place is huge! It's got a lot of seating. Take a lap around before you find a place to settle down, but be careful of the elevation change when you enter the second room. It tripped me up every time. There are also restrooms in the back. Tip: If you buy a bag of beans you get a free drip coffee!

Yelp
***3.5 stars*** I've been on a hunt for a good matcha latte in Chicago. I previously enjoyed the one at Metric so I was excited to see there was a sister cafe up north. There is some street parking out front and the space within Milli is HUGE compared to Metric. There are three separate rooms and there is a combination of small and large tables so the space is excellent for working/studying. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they also had pastries but we had lunch plans so passed on pastries that day. I had a hot matcha latte with oat milk and it tasted very milk forward so I was disappointed that I could not taste the matcha flavor as much as I hoped. Hubby got the same thing but cold with no ice and it was also milky but not as much as mine. Overall, I want to give Milli the benefit of the doubt since it is a newer establishment. I'd be willing to come back to give it another shot.

Yelp
I've been a die-hard fan and supporter of Metric for years, so I was very excited to come to the long-awaited opening of Milli, its second location. Unlike Metric in west loop, Milli offers plenty of seating and a larger assortment of baked goods. While they eventually want to transition into a hybrid coffee/ wine bar, for now the space is very well suited for the WFH crowd with plenty of comfortable seats and natural lighting. The interior is gorgeous and offers an elevated experience (including the Aesop soap in the restrooms). The coffee is the same as in West Loop, so one of chicagos best. I am always excited to try their drip coffee on rotations. They also have excellent espresso-based drinks and a few fun drinks like a mule as well. The baristas are kind and helpful, and brew/ pull a fantastic coffee. I am excited to see how this place transforms over time, but for now, it's a wonderful addition to Chicago's coffee scene. While there is limited street parking in the area Milli has a ton of bike racks at its entrance!

Yelp
Decided to check out this new cafe with my family. We found free street parking easily. Inside is definitely a cool vibe. There were lots of people with their laptops working so it's a good space for remote work. My family was able to snag the last available table for 4. There's plenty of seating inside. By the time we arrived, they were out of all the pastries and only had a mini pie left. I tried the superkhana chai collab with a shot of espresso. I ordered milk steamers for my kids while my husband had the cold brew. Overall I'm happy with the experience and I plan to go back asap to try a pastry.

Yelp
Visited on a Monday around 9:30 am, cafe was fairly busy majority of tables and seats were occupied but a few spots available throughout the cafe. No line to order which was great. Drink: Cappuccino - solid, nice smooth espresso, well well steamed milk that had proper ratios of foam to steamed milk and espresso Food: Kale and squash croststa - good, nice flakey pastry with a generous portion of the savory cheesey kale and squash filling, served room temp, a pretty hearty would like to have tried this warmed up Service was solid, order at the counter, pastries served at the register and drinks are called out for pick up at the bar. Overall enjoyed milli by metric, an excellent place to get work done, solid WiFi, decent number of tables and places to charge. Majority of the folks visiting seemed to be working or reading so a cozy spot to spend a morning or afternoon with a nice variety of beverages and pastries.

Yelp
From numerous amount of seating to their coffee, I was quite amazed. My friends and I really enjoyed the pour over coffee, as it wasn't too bitter of a flavor and had a good aftertaste. There's plenty of people that come in and out of the cafe, so there's always seating. The bathroom is also nice and clean. Very few outlets if you're planning to study here, but overall great spot

Yelp
I am obsessed with Metric coffee so very excited for a cafe to open on the north west side. The interior is beautiful. Love the sleek decor and the mix of individual and communal tables. Extensive coffee menu with pour overs, espresso options, and seasonal items. Love the 12oz iced latte option. Personally I wasn't blown away by the pastries. Shared the croissant, garlic twist, and cookies and everything was fine, but nothing exceptional. I might be spoiled by other bakeries in the Avondale/Logan area. Seating is plentiful, but it's often busy. On weekends the line can go out the door and it's normal for a 20 min plus wait. Show up before 9 to hopefully avoid the line and get first pick at pastries.

Yelp
They offer an extensive coffee and pastry menu, which I really appreciate. From pourover to espresso and cold brew, they feature beans from different regions and farms to suit a variety of tastes. The space itself is modern, stylish, and comfortable, with plenty of seating options. While their lattes could use some improvement -- some cups are less consistent with slightly overly thick foam -- the single-origin anaerobic espresso is excellent. The pastries are a must try - taste as good as they look. Overall, would recommend to come in, sit down and enjoy the drinks when they are less busy.

Yelp
When entering the cafe, I was so attracted by their fabulous design! The overall vibe is kind of warm-colored, which makes people feel cozy and relaxed, especially during cold days. I ordered a Canele and a cup of iced Americano. I think the best way to examine the quality of food or drinks of a cafe is to try their most basic items. I was so satisfied with the Canele, which was crispy outside while moist inside with perfect texture. However, the iced Americano didn't meet my expectations. It tasted even worse than at least half of the cafes that I've ever tried. So, I gave a decent 4 out of 5 stars to this cafe. There were many people coming for chatting or reading during weekdays, even at noon. The space was kind of crowded, and it felt less private if you wanna just get your work done inside.

Yelp
Still new so line was long, as to be expected, but definitely worth it! Same great coffee menu as the Fulton location, but an even better pastry selection and lots of seating and great ambiance. I hope to be able to snag a spot when they really get the whole bar and food menu going, but in the meantime, just come early and enjoy.
google avatar

Juliana R.

Yelp
Great location and ambiance! The spot has appeal for studying, coffee dates, or as a remote work space. The line was long for opening week, but moved consistently. The baristas were very helpful and answered everyone's questions about the unfamiliar concept drinks and the bakery offerings. The croissant was fantastic as was the latte! The espresso cream soda was good but it was what you'd expect of coffee and soda. No creamy element and definitely out of the norm for me. I wish their signature drinks had a little more variety in texture/bases as they seemed to all be soda based. The baked goods are fresh each day as they run out close to the end of the day. I will definitely return to try more of their house syrups and drink offerings and just to enjoy the beautiful space.

Yelp
This is a really nice open space, nice decor, and the coffee is solid. I had a latte which was fine. The pastries now are amazing. I had a flaky fig marmalade muffin of some sort. Just absolutely delicious. Pricey but the quality is there when you taste it. It gets packed quickly because it's new in the area. A nice place to go read a book do a little bit of work if you can get a hold of a socket to plug your laptop in in case you run out of charge that would be great if they had more sockets. Not a quiet place though so don't expect to read without noise. It's a lovely place. Other than that it's all about the coffee and the pastries and the ambience . Oh and a good place for a first date, get to know you chitchat.
google avatar

Haley K.

Yelp
Very nice space to work and hang, with plenty of plugs and WiFi. However, my drip coffee with no refills was $5 which I felt was quite steep. The salty chocolate chip cookie was solid and the staff was very kind and was coming around to clean/bus tables.
google avatar

Kris M.

Yelp
West their this past Sunday to check out the new coffee joint in the neighborhood. The cashier was not really friendly, didn't even say thank you. Not sure why they didn't heat up the ham croissant? I would wait until it fully opens if your thinking about checking it out.
google avatar

Cara N.

Yelp
staff were very nice, the aesthetic was OFF THE CHARTS. I ordered a chocolate croissant and my friend got the herbed garlic cream cheese twist (I think) but the pasties were dry, almost like they had been sitting out for a day or two. The matcha was warm at the bottom which I can appreciate light ice but I still would like the whole drink to be cold. The sweet potato curry latte was wonderful.

M. C.

Yelp
Metric Coffee has always roasted some of my favorite beans. (Still frequent the original location in the West Loop.) Here at Milli by Metric, Metric has now greatly elevated the ambiance, in a visually stunning repurposing of an older commercial building, with more work planned. Milli by Metric pairs Metric's excellent coffee and interesting in-house pastries with an expanded seating area and more food options at this location.

Kelly A.

Yelp
Run, don't walk. Better yet, SPRINT. Line out the door!! This place is AMAZING. Coffee is the best in Chicago!
