On the Grid : Minero

"All hail the giant gold burrito! Marked with the words “wrapped for your protection” this monster of a meal along with family style tacos is what makes this menu a favorite. While the eatin’ is good, don’t forget to explore the drink menu. Some say their frozen Satanico cocktail is just what you need to get you through that after lunch lull... but we really can’t speak to that." - Fuzzco

16 Excellent Chicken Wing Spots in Charleston

"The wings at Mexican restaurant Minero are grilled over charcoal and then shaken up at your tableside with a liberal dousing of Valentina hot sauce. It’s smoky, tangy, and a little messy." - Erin Perkins, Parker Milner

7 Most Anticipated Charleston Restaurants, Spring 2022 - Eater Carolinas

"Chef Shamil Velazquez, of Delaney Oyster House, will assume the role of executive chef at the Johns Island Minero, as well as retaining his position at Delaney. Velazquez says that his vision for the new place is to lean into larger, dinner-style entrees (not just tacos) and more seafood. He recognizes the fan favorites however and won’t be touching the massive burrito, Valentina-soaked wings, or fried catfish tacos." - Erin Perkins

After 14 Years, Famed Fat Hen Retires to Make Way for New Johns Island Minero - Eater Carolinas

"This morning, Neighborhood Dining Group (NDG), of Husk and Husk Barbecue in Greenville, South Carolina, announced that it would bring back its Mexican concept Minero to the former Fat Hen address at 3140 Maybank Highway. The downtown location of Minero shuttered in April 2020. Minero started under chef Sean Brock and became known for its Southern-meets-Mexican fare, like Valentina-soaked wings, fried catfish tacos, and benne seed salsa. Brock later left the NDG group to pursue new opportunities in Nashville. The Johns Island location of Minero was already planned last year, but NDG halted it because of the pandemic. In a press release, NDG President David Howard says, “We’re excited to resume plans for this improved location in an even bigger and better way than we had originally thought. We can’t wait to serve the community on Johns Island and bring Minero back to the Charleston area.” NGD plans to open the Johns Island Minero later this summer." - Erin Perkins

Love the patio! Always great service and food. Tried the limited time chipotle lime wings- sooo good! We usually get fajitas and tacos, but tried the burger and salad this time and great all around.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Minero’s Mexican Grill – John’s Island, SC Absolutely love this spot! Minero’s on James Island serves up some of the most authentic and flavorful Mexican food around. The queso is a must—creamy, rich, and downright addictive. I’m obsessed with the street corn, and the shrimp dish with the corn cakes is next-level delicious. My husband can’t stop raving about the birria burrito—he says it’s the best he’s ever had! The vibe is casual and fun, perfect for a night out or a quick bite. If you’re looking for bold flavors, great service, and that true Mexican comfort food feel—Minero’s is a win! ✨Follow along for more local foodie finds and Charleston gems on Instagram: @holycityfitblonde 🌮🌽💛

This restaurant is seriously amazing! From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was super inviting, with colorful decorations and a lively vibe. The staff were all really friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Honestly, this is one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to. The food, the service, and the atmosphere all come together to create a fantastic dining experience. If you're looking for some delicious Mexican food, you've got to check this place out!

We’re vacationing in Charleston from out of state and decided to try this place on a whim when visiting Angel Oak Park. We visited on a Sunday for lunch. We would definitely go back if ever in town in the future! The food was delicious. But equally important, this restaurant was extremely family friendly. We have 3 kids who are five and under. So we’re always nervous to try new places. But it was a very casual environment on the patio, there were tons of families with other young kids, and the kids loved their food. Our kids were fortunately on their best behavior, but it wasn’t the type of place where you have to worry about your kids making the slightest bit of noise. Thanks for a great experience!

Google
I would give Minero a 4.5 if it was possible, dog friendly garden area, server was great. Tacos were great... For the most part I got 3 and my wife got 3, the only one that was not great was the crunchy taco, the meat was really salty. The catfish taco was awesome and so were the churros and dulce dipping sauce. Drinks were great.

Google
The residents of Johns Island are exceptionally fortunate to live within such close proximity to Minero. To simply state that this restaurant is a "vibe" is an inadequate cliche; Minero is the embodiment of fun, of party, of delicious, all served up under the guise of your friendly neighborhood Mexican joint. The food is fresh, diverse, and bursting with flavor. The multifarious drink options pair perfectly with the food menu. And if you're lucky, Sara will be taking your order, someone whose personality combines the best of southern charm with the warmth of the sun over Cancun. There aren't other dining options in the Charleston area that feel like an escape to a beach in Mexico. ¡Salud!

Google
Excellent in my total experience. There’s plenty of parking in the back, but use care finding it, best to use navigation so you don’t drive past it. I had the wheat flour tortillas which were excellent, very subtle mixes of tastes. Service was fast and friendly. You can bring your dog and sit at the picnic tables outside. I will be back in fact this was my second visit.

This place is awesome. The atmosphere is amazing with a huge outdoor patio. The staff is great and the food is delicious. We ordered a couple of drinks and they were fantastic. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Awesome restaurant. Super kid friendly with large portions on the kids menu. The wings are out of control. Everything was amazing, my kids enjoyed themselves. Overall a wonderful meal.

Yelp
The Johns Island location is an inedible, poor excuse for Mexican food. Whoever is rave reviewing this place has probably never eaten Mexican food in their lives, have been paid for their review, only eat frozen dinners at home, or were totally inebriated when dining there. I'm not being harsh because I have given this place so many chances & each time was a major disappointment in the texture, flavor, & cooking! I'm not hard to please when it comes to enjoying a meal. But if you're a restaurant & touting Mexican cousine, 1. Your focus is getting the FOOD right 2. It should resemble Mexican, not just in looks alone but where it counts...in the flavor. At least cook your beans & not serve them hard from being undercooked. And don't call your rice Red Rice (not to be confused with real low country Red Rice) when it's Mexican Rice & serve it mushy, pale pink, & no flavor. Give your salsas some actual spices/herbs for flavor. Cook your meats to the proper degree, not over cooking them to the point of being hard & dry. Don't serve enchiladas with unheated/unbaked corn tortillas. Gross! Be more generous with cheeses (since the claim is "untraditional" Mexican). Give your drinks some flavor & offer brewed iced tea - you're in the South! The ambiance IS on point. Service pretty good. Parking ample. Great for kids & dogs. But if you're hungry & know a thing or two about how Mexican is supposed to taste, let me save you 100 bucks or so & find ANY place else. If you still go anyway to see for yourself, you'll be remembering my review after all is said & done.

Yelp
Minero provided quality food at their downtown Charleston location especially their patented panini style burritos. Now with the Johns Island location, they have taken it up a notch with more indoor and outdoor space, corn hole, dog friendly, larger bar area and of course parking. This is a great addition to the Johns Island family of restaurants.
google avatar

Yelp
The best Mexican in all of Charleston county can be found on Johns Island. The salsa, guacamole, queso, margaritas and burritos are made with the most flavorful and freshest ingredients. Farm to table! I highly recommend the burritos as they have a delicious cheese coating and the portions are large enough for 2 meals. Come hungry! You have the option of sitting inside this elegant restaurant or the beautiful extra large patio. The service is always outstanding!
google avatar

Yelp
Love Minero! They've recently revamped their outdoor space, which looks absolutely amazing! They have options to sit either indoors, on the "back patio" which is covered so you get the best of both worlds (indoor/outdoor), and the outdoor seating. We love sitting in the "back patio" covered portion, or outside! The staff has always been extremely friendly from the second you walk in to as soon as you walk out. They're open to answer any questions, as well as make recommendations if you need them! Highly suggest letting them guide you through the menu, if you are open to trying new things! The only reason it was 4 stars instead of 5 is because I think there is potential for a little more of a punch in the flavor arena! Some of the items we've tried have been good, with potential to be great with some additional flavor! The salsas are good - but could use a little more pep in their step as far as salsa is concerned. Would also love to see a spicy salsa option, as their "spicy" one is more so smoky than spicy. That said, their burrito is HUGE - easily shareable. Recommend mixing and matching your tacos is you're an adventurous eater! They also have a really great happy hour with good food and drink options to choose from!

Yelp
Cool spot. Really enjoyed the enclosed outdoor patio area. Servers were very friendly and attentive. I went with the steak burrito, upon recommendation, and it did not disappoint. This sucker was massive. I couldn't even get down half of it, and was able to get two more meals out of the leftovers. Flavors were on point, and the fried cheese around the tortilla was the cherry on top. Looking forward to going back.

Yelp
Fresh ingredients with amazing flavors. Not traditional Mexican. Margaritas are best part. Atmosphere is awesome and staff are attentive.

Yelp
Amazing ambiance for starters. There was 3 of us and we were promptly seated on the patio deck. Great service all the way through the entire meal. We started with the salsa tasting which was very tasty. The entrees came out hot and on perfect timing. We got the pumpkin cheesecake for dessert and you can't pass it up. Best cheesecake ever. They make it here. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
March 30, 2023 Just finished a great lunch with a group of four and our dog. The Garden area is a great area for dog lovers and waiting for your table. The tacos we all ordered were all wonderful! One ordered the catfish taco and raved about it. The wings blew me away this time around. The last visit, the wings were just inedible. They've changed the way the serve them now. You can add as much or as little heat to these beauties now. I'll be back!

Yelp
I've come to Minero a handful of times now and have been so happy with the quality of food, service and dinning experience each time! The ambiance of the restaurant is really cute. They have indoor seating and an outdoor screened patio which is fun to sit at. For food - my favorite appetizer has been the street corn. For entrees my favorites are the steak tacos, steak fajitas and cheese quesadilla. I've tried much of their menu though and haven't gone wrong yet! I would however recommend ordering something with tortillas as they make them fresh daily! They also have a nice happy hour Monday through Friday 4-6pm with discounted margaritas. The margaritas are excellent so I'd recommend checking this out

Yelp
I went to the original Minero located downtown, but this was first time at the new Johns Island location. First off the building is beautiful, with plenty of parking. Love the layout as well. Second, the service was great! We received our food and drinks quickly after ordering then, and we felt all of our needs were met. We're very needy people. As for the food, it was mostly as good as I remember it, however the burrito wasn't up to par for me. It wasn't really mixed well, so you get bites full of just cabbage and other bites of only beans. The wings were delicious as always (they're famous for them) so I would 100% getting a plate of them when you stop by. The salsa trio featured this benne (the beige sauce in my salsa picture) which tasted like a sesame, almost peanut-like sauce you'd get from a Thai restaurant and it was my favorite part of the whole meal besides the drinks. I could swim in that sauce. The tacos were fine. Nothing special, but not bad either. Of course, I am a drinker, so I loved the Minero Vice - somehow wasn't too sweet to mix a coconut marg and a strawberry daiquiri! The minero marg was a tad too sweet but it didn't stop me from enjoying it.

Yelp
Awesome place hidden on Johns Island. Minero isn't quite your typical Mexican restaurant, as it has an elevated Mexican menu and vibe. Food is fantastic! The charcoal chicken tastes so good and different than something you can get at most places. Staff is super friendly and plentiful so service is good!
google avatar

Leeza S.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican restaurants before it was closed down during the pandemic. Best churros and Mexican chocolate I ever had.

Yelp
First off, the music is too loud for a restaurant which has everyone talking louder and louder to be heard, which multiplies from table to table. Cacophony! John was a really good waiter, there when you might need him and not too intrusive in this completely redone restaurant. No longer does it have the darker vibe of the prior place, the Fat Hen. Even in the last month, the parking lot is bigger, longer and now has small rocks so that it will not be a mud pit. Even with the parking lot 90% full, there was a lot of room inside for you to be quickly seated. An exterior eating area also is available along with a separate, quite large, bar area with large TVs playing (what else) football. The Quesadilla ($13) had chicken added ($3) was quite large and almost like a LARGE burrito cut into four pieces. Tasty and obviously filling. Most certainly, I would order it again. Why? The exterior comes with the appearance and taste of browned cheese. A great mixture of food contents fill the tortilla with greatness. TIP: Although Mexican hot sauce is on the table, eat one of the first four slices first, as there is some spicy heat here and there.

Yelp
I'm so excited to have a great Mexican place on Johns Island! I've visited Minero twice so far and really enjoyed both experiences. Minero is one of the few places in Charleston that offers a weekend happy hour (12 to 3) which is a big draw for me. I love their margaritas and especially love the ice they use! I wish the apps were a bit more affordable ($10 for chips and guac), but I enjoyed the salsa trio. The menu has the perfect set of options that isn't too overwhelming. I have tried the breakfast burrito (amazing!), the tacos, and their quesadilla. I love that the quesadilla and the burrito are cooked with crispy cheese on the outside of the quesadilla. Overall: great staff, location, parking, and food. I wish prices were a little lower, but I will still stop by occasionally.

Yelp
Minero Mexican Grill and Cantjna is a casual but lively restaurant now located at 3140 Maybank Hwy on Johns Island. Originally located in downtown Charleston the relocation and opening of the restaurant is now housed in the popular "Fat Hen" restaurant site and has made quite a hit with the locals. The food is fresh and locally sourced produce is used so quality and care is not an issue. Tonight's meal included an order of Chicken Fajitas Al Carbon and it was delicious. The chicken was served on a platter with charred onions and peppers, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, guacamole, yellow rice and refried beans and was nicely presented. My husband and I actually split the dish and was enough for the two of us. The chicken was not too thinly sliced and was marinated and rubbed with tasty spices. This is what you would want in a Mexican dish~to get fired up! Tacos, burritos and quesadillas are on the menu but be prepared for a twist of flavors and not the average run of the mill Mexican establishment. There is a salsa tasting fleet to try as well~ roja,, benne and verde! Nice touch! Next visit I'll have to try the sides; namely, the Fried Sweet Plantains and the Red Scarlett Charro Beans. That's a meal for me!!! Did someone mention Minero's Sweet Corn appetizer??? Ah well, one more thing, bring it on!!! The environment offers several dining areas and is actually larger than it looks from the road once you are inside. The additions of the large indoor-outdoor and climate controlled patio with large screen TV's as well as a spacious dining room inside ~ add cozy booths on the enclosed front porch~ there is plenty of room for everyone and for every occasion. Make sure to take a spin around the rooms on your way to the restroom to view some very interesting pieces of artwork that are on the walls. The hand carved wooden figures were done by artisans from the state of Oaxaca in the south of Mexico. Tables at Minero can be reserved through the RESY app. The large private parking lot is onsite and there are plenty of parking spaces. A James Bears Award- nominated Chef leads the pack in the kitchen..... incorporating traditional Mexican with touches of the culinary South. Good combo!!

Yelp
I was a huge fan of the downtown location and have been anxiously waiting for Minero to open on Johns Island for years. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my food experience. The restaurant looked great. The inside was clean and the outside seating area was open with a great ambiance. Also, our waiter was incredible. He was very personable and passionate about the restaurant and the food. If I were just reviewing the service and ambiance it would be an easy 5 stars. Unfortunately, the food was lacking. It was nothing more than average. I got the veggie burrito, which used to be my favorite, and was disappointed by the quality. I also got the pork taco, which was dry and lacked flavor. I'm hoping that the quality of food is due to them being new and it will pick up as time goes on. I'm going to go back and try some other items, but probably not for a few months.

Yelp
As a frequent visitor of the downtown Minero I was so excited for them to open back up! The Johns island location is beautiful and there is plenty of parking. The bene salsa is what dreams are made of, truly. I wish they sold it in bulk! I also love the salsa verde - the red salsa is okay but not my favorite. The wings are some of the best in town, tossed tableside in Valentina. The tacos are always delicious, my favorite is the pastor & carne Asada!

Yelp
Arrived at 5pm on a Wednesday, there was a 15 minute wait for two inside, but could be seated immediately on the porch (no AC). The atmosphere was clean and well decorated, spacious inside and out. Staff was helpful and attentive! Ordered a $9 DIY spicy margarita which was tasty and served in a cute glass. Next, I tried the Los Divorciadas drink which was a little sweet for my liking. We started with the chips and salsa trio, which was delicious and there was a copious amount of chips, which was nice to enjoy with our snapper ceviche as well. The broiled oysters were also full of flavor and everything was well portioned! I ordered one catfish taco with the homemade corn tortilla, which did not impress me all that much. The tortilla broke apart and had to be eaten with a fork and knife. Fried catfish was not super flavorful and portion was kinda sad. Everyone around us ordered the burrito and quesadilla - which were probably the move, they looked huge and super tasty! I will be back to try those - and their variation of an espresso martini!

Yelp
Place has so much potential, but there's just so much that needs fixing. The bad: Bar area seating is extremely uncomfortable. Bring a bleacher cushion. The lighting is great but the music needs to be cranked way the heck up. A better playlist is also needed. There was mostly 30-40 something's there and I was able to visually see them enjoying Flo Rida but then sour pussed when it was followed with Abba... Overall the food is lackluster in taste and presentation. My wife ordered the enchiladas. The chicken was dry, there wasn't anything else inside of them like onions or peppers to provide textural diversity. There was no cilantro garnish or scallion or queso fresco on top, just mole sauce. Corn tortilla were also undercooked and chewy. A very bland and unaesthetic meal. Taco dillas are an attempt at the cheesy gordita crunch. Sadly, taco bell does it better. Even at $5, I wouldn't suggest ordering them. They tasted of vegetable oil. The house margarita reminded me more of a lime snow cone. Entirely too much ice and 100% there was not 1.5 oz of tequila in it. This deterred us from ordering top shelf margaritas, or any other cocktails for that matter. Corona lights were partially skunked. House chips are too salty, dial it back a speck. The good: Restaurant is clean and so are the bathrooms Verde salsa was bright and tasty Service was great. So was the timing of everything. There's a happy hour from 4-6. Plenty of parking. I really question if the owners have ever actually sat in the restaurant for a couple hours and eaten here. Because if they had, they'd realize how easy these fixes are and how far they'd go.

Yelp
Consistently great food & service! Have never had a bad meal or experience here. The salsa trio is delicious & my husband loves the (massive) burrito. I also love how spacious this place is - as well as their outdoor seating option.

Yelp
WHEN I TELL YOU THIS IS THE DISNEY EXPERIENCE OF TEX MEX!!! SO SO good! The food is phenomenal alone, the service is five star very accommodating to allergies, vibes are immaculate this place could not be better. Im serious, this place is one in the world.

Yelp
We tried Minero on a Friday night. The wait time was an 1 hour, but they ended up seating us in 40 minutes. While I waited to be seated, I decided to walk around. The restaurant is beautiful. The only drink line was very long and located In the outdoor area. I wish that was set up better with servers. I didn't feel like waiting, so I sat at the picnic tables. Once seated, we had the most attentive, thoughtful, and entertaining waiter. He quickly steered us to great food choices and different dishes to try. Minero is a spin on Mexican food and I enjoyed everything I tried. We had the chicken quesadilla, salsa flight, and corn. I like all of the salsas: one was nutty, the other tasted like a chipotle bbq, and the third one tasted like fresh cilantro/greens. Everything tasted great and had an exciting kick to each bite. I will be back. I hope to not wait as long. The outdoor seating does not have fans or air conditioning.

Yelp
The Al Pastor burrito is SO SO TASTY. Hands down one of my favorite burritos I have ever had. We sat on the patio and the vibes were great! Our server was so nice and attentive. A must visit!

Yelp
Casual Mexican food in a great, well decorated space. We had a resy which put us in the main dining room, but next time we'll ask to sit on the big porch dining area as it's brighter and just looks more fun. Our visit started a little weird. We had already picked an appetizer when our server came over, so when she offered guacamole and I said what we wanted, it seems she thought that meant no chips, which we later had to ask for. The chips are really good, so we were happy to get them after our tiny appetizer because we were starving. We had the oysters to start. They came with a spicy, slightly cheesy sauce and were quite tasty. Only problem is they were tiny and you only get 6. Definitely not local oysters, which would have been great since our locals are big, salty and have room for more filling. The plate was $19, so we expected more. I wish I'd have taken a photo, but again, we were starving. Main entrees were much better and quite filling. My husband had a steak burrito which was about the size of my head. He enjoyed it, but said the steak was a little dry. I had beef enchiladas and loved it. I saw someone said the roja sauce was a salty bomb, but I didn't think that at all. I really loved it. Rich, delicious and just perfect with the enchiladas. You can't beat house made corn tortillas either. They came with refried beans and rice. Beans had a hint of lime and were topped with a little cheese, and the rice was a mild yellow rice which balanced the richness of the Roja sauce. I enjoyed a Paloma which was the perfect blend of tequila, grapefruit and lime. Not too strong, but not a weak drink either. Overall we enjoyed it and will go back to try some other goodies!

Yelp
Went for dinner the other night. I wanted to try something new so we got a couple Minero Ashtrays I got the taco plate with shrimp (it's an extra dollar) and chicken and then I had to try the steak taco (it's an extra dollar). Out of the three honestly the shrimp was the best. Can't wait to come back to try something else!

Yelp
Rushed service, medicinal vibe. Steak was excellent. If you don't want to be rushed out the door with fork in hand, don't make a reservation after 8pm. The staff are ready to be gone and quickly. We were still working on our entree when our bill was served (and by served, I mean the server stood there with handheld credit card processor asking us for payment as my date was still holding his fork). It ruined our celebration, and our evening. You try for it not to, but when you save up to go out, and then you're treated like an annoyance, it's tough to get past that.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Especially great for happy hour, love the indoor and outdoor space as well as the bar. The parking can get a bit tricky during busy time and so can getting a table, but once you're in you can't go wrong! It definitely comes at a higher price tag and chips and salsa don't come with your meal, but they definitely make up for it in every other way. Our waitress was impeccable and our food came out well timed and hot! I beg to come back every week!
google avatar

Yelp
Ask for Allie! Taco-dilla for Happy Hour is only $5.00! It's a crunchy beef taco wapped in a cheese quesadilla. When it arrived at the table, I thought it was called a Taco-Zilla because it's size reminded me of something Godzilla would eat! Can't wait to try other menu items on my next visit!

Yelp
We always have an amazing time at Minero! The food has always been fresh, and one of my favorites are the wings- those are to die for. They have an amazing happy hour with very kind servers and management. Tons of TVs to catch a game, and a beautiful outdoor area.

Yelp
Came here with friends and had a great time! The wait time wasn't long for a Friday and the servers were very friendly and engaging. I had delicious fajitas. I'll definitely come again!

Yelp
Flavorless. Everything over spiced. It was inedible. Would not recommend. Burrito was bland. So was the rice and refried beans. Taco was dry wings tasted like nothing. Cute ambiance that's about it though.

Yelp
What a wonderful addition to the Johns Island dining scene! We love the atmosphere choices - outside with ansports bar vibe or inside for dining and conversation. My husband and I don't drink alcohol, so we are thrilled to have zero ABV choices! Mocktails and NA beer. So glad they're carrying Athletic Brewing now! My favorite appetizer is the pork empanadas - so savory. Today we split the fajitas and it's my favorite on the menu! Everyone is so friendly and helpful here. Lisa took great care of us and recommended we get two meats with the fajitas - steak and chicken. The tortillas are house made and we had both corn and flour. Too full for dessert today but they have some delicious ones. A great dining experience!

Yelp
Nothing special period I can not make 85 characters for a place that did not give me a good meal. It was about Taco Bell with drinks. There you go.

Yelp
From the food to the service to the ambiance, this place is incredible. Our server was so nice and accommodating to our very large party. Everything is made in-house from scratch. The green salsa and chicken fajitas, complete with homemade tortillas, were amazing. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner. We ordered the Trio as an appetizer (salsa, queso, and guacamole). All three were amazing! The guacamole was the best I've ever had! I ordered the 2 tacos (one chicken and one steak). Both were really good! My sister ordered the Chimichanga, it was HUGE! She really enjoyed it. She said the refried beans were different, but good. My niece got enchiladas, she said it was really good! We enjoyed everything! It was really clean and the staff was amazing and attentive. My sister also ordered a Margarita Zero and said it was delicious!

Yelp
Highly recommend! We are from south Texas and very much enjoyed the Mexican cuisine. They have a great adult drink menu, outdoor area was shaded and very comfortable considering it was July. I had the shrimp tacos and beef enchiladas and both were excellent. Highly recommend both. The service was very good. Kids menu also had good variety and generous portions.

Yelp
So torn on the rating for this one the food was good and we loved the atmosphere and the fact we were able to take our dog with us. The rating is driven by the service - it was such a painful experience. We were seated outside on the patio and seemingly forgotten about. No waiter came over for 30 min & required us to go back to the hostess to ask what's up. She admitted a mistake and greatly apologized. We understand things happen so we were OK. Then the rest of the evening.. we were still forgotten about. It's the once shame on you; two times shame on me. We'd probably return for drinks and apps but we'd think twice for a full meal.

Yelp
We had a great meal at Minero on Johns Island. For one thing for customers of the restaurant that used to be in this location- Minero has completely rebuilt the parking lot. It is no longer an awkward dirt field where you used to struggle to find a spot, now it is a more spacious and flatter gravel lot with lots of available parking even when the restaurant is busy. This in and of itself is a great find for a Johns Island restaurant in the summer!! We sat outside on the large porch and had a wonderful meal. I had a salad that was tomatoes and steak and peaches and no lettuce which was sort of weird but honestly it was fabulous: Heirloom Tomato and Peach Salad add Steak. I could probably eat that salad every day.

Yelp
This place was recommended last minute by a complete stranger, and we decided to give it a go. Best food decision of our trip! This place blew me away with the quality and presentation of their food and drinks. This is not your typical Mexican fare, which I love. Rather, it is a chef inspired menu that targets your taste and visual senses. Ambiance is casual, but modern and the service was great. Do yourself a favor and give this place a visit!!

Yelp
I have visited this restaurant several times. Quality of food and customer service is very good. Everything tastes fresh and organic. I gave 4 stars bc while their margaritas are very good the glass is always filled to the top with Ice. They only offer one size glass and not the traditional 20 oz found at most Mexican restaurants. We like coming here but visit other Mexican restaurants often that don't skimp on the margaritas.

Yelp
Still enjoying Minero's food and drinks, but the male server I had recently was forgetful and dismissive and seemed put out to be working there; I would avoid sitting at his tables if you can. The other staff we interacted with were wonderful. The menu changes are still good, ambiance was great as usual.

Yelp
Ate here with my parents the other night and had a decent experience. Bumping up the review from 3 to 4 stars because the service was really on point. We started with the trio of apps, and I really loved the guac and Queso. The salsa was a little sweet but full of cilantro, which I love. We also got an order of Mexican street corn, which might be the best thing on the menu. The pork empanadas were a huge miss--the exterior looked over cooked while the inside was still doughy and undercooked and the pork itself had no flavor. I opted for the charcoal chicken chimichanga which was a huge portion. It came with a side of refried beans which were good. The chimichanga was stuffed full of rice and chicken and lots of flavor and I got thru about half of it before I was too full to have another bite. I also tried the minero margarita, which was really tasty. We were too full for dessert. The space was gorgeous! We sat inside, but I love the patio--it would be perfect for some margs and chips and Queso on a nice day.

Yelp
So excited to return to Minero after such a long time! The new place is lovely, spacious and bright. We started with the salsa trio-our favorite is the salsa verde. My dad had the burrito, and I definitely should have ordered the same. The burrito is a must have and you will have enough for 2 meals easy. I had two tacos that were good but the corn tortillas fell apart. I had a side of the plantains and they were absolutely delicious. The highlight was the zero drink options that they have. My dad was so excited to have a non alcoholic margarita. I enjoyed a house margarita and it was refreshing and delicious. Can't wait to return soon!

Yelp
I was so excited for this to come to Johns Island, since I loved the one downtown. With that being said, I was pretty disappointed. The atmosphere was great. They put a lot of money into redoing the place and it looked fantastic. Our waiter was so great and friendly. He was very informative and was fun to chat with. I ordered the Poloma to drink and loved it! This was probably the highlight of the dinner for me. I even tried to recreate it at home. We ordered the chip and salsa trio. I was not impressed. The chips were very good, but the salsas were not that great. I split the burrito and the heirloom tomato salad with my husband. Both were super bland. This burrito used to be so good which is why it was such a a big let down. I'm hoping this place just needs to iron out some more kinks since it's only been open a month. I'll be back for some drinks and maybe test out the food again.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, seeing as how it is so close to my house and that I honestly miss having good Latin food ( I miss Miami sometimes...sigh). I avoided going here for the first month or so in order to allow them to work out the bugs and because I completely understand the lack of staffing in almost all restaurants nowadays. That being said, Our waitress was great. very attentive and friendly. She did a great job. After reading some of the previous reviews I will agree with several Yelpers that the location has really had a lot of money put into the place, It looks nice and there is a great large patio that accommodates lots of people. To bad the bar doesn't extend all the way down one side of the outside. I have learned that John's Islanders like their drink...which is why I fit in so darn well!! So, we ordered different Margaritas, One Pineapple, one Mineros Margaritas, and EXTRA. Extra in that I comes with a little Coronita turned upside-down and a little extra chaser ( it comes with Tequila, but for $2 you can upgrade to Mezcal or Grand Marnier) We all agree that the Margaritas were not that good. Granted Im not a margarita drinker, but my wife, who is, thought they lacked a tequila flavor. We ordered the Ceviche Campechana, it comes with a chicharron that were good, they honestly tasted like the Bugle snack chips!! The Ceviche was pretty good. The table ordered a steak burrito bowl, a few different tacos, and the Crispy Kan Kan Pork Tomahawk (Chuletta kan kan). The bowl was ok, not great. The tacos were...pretty much the same. ok but not great. Now on to the circled entree...A beautifully presented dish. I agree the BBQ sauce was not that great. The rice was dry and without flavor. The beans were ok. The meat, lacked seasoning but was enough for 3 or 4 people! All in all it was an experience that, as my wife always says, "was good to know" but not one we wish to repeat.

Yelp
TLDR: good enough if you live in johns island but not worth our 35 minute drive across town. We only get 1 date night a week and are sorry we chose here. Very sadly I have to give 3 stars. Minero downtown was my #1 favorite restaurant before they closed. Best ambiance and food (I would always take dates here) and this location did not live up. Margaritas- I got frozen and bf for classic. I could tell mine barely had alcohol in it, I'm a lightweight and usually catch a buzz after half a drink and nothing from this one at all. Food- bf asked for no cilantro (he's one of the people that thinks it tastes like soap) and his burrito was full of it. We're not ones to complain but had to send it back this time since he wouldn't have even been able to eat it. He was convinced that they just picked it out and re-wrapped it since there was a chuck out of the tortilla when we got it back from the same spot he bit. Because of this, I waited to eat and my tacos and of course they got cold. I tried the burrito and there was no meat in my bite, just so many beans. Not that we asked, but nothing was comp'd (not even the $4 beer). My catfish taco had very little meat and was mainly fried batter. Flavor from the onions and sauce was good. Pork tacos just not the same as before, the pineapple on top had also gone bad and had a sour taste. Wings still good but not as amazing as before- they don't shake the bag at your table anymore which was my favorite part. Very sad churros aren't on the menu. Ambiance- feels like a dentist office. It's so bright white with those styrofoam ceiling tiles, does not give the fun cantina vibes as last location in the back dining area. Patio looks fun but it was too hot for us this time. Tables are all sat very close together (we heard someone mention that half the things they were charged for they didn't order) Service- nothing special, she apologized for the cilantro and got it back quick but no bit to-do about it. Someone was shadowing her and he didn't even smile Especially for the price this place was sadly not worth it for me.

Yelp
I was honored to attend Minero's soft opening for friends and family on June 8. Everything was incredible! SPACE: The Old Fat Hen layout remnant still exist in the location of the bar, host station, walls/tables, etc. However, Minero has completely upgraded the interior, added more bathrooms, and made a massive outdoor dining space. It looks like the outdoor space is larger than the interior! Ceiling fans created a great breeze that made dining enjoyable outside. They have heaters ready for the winter and big TVs for sporting events. The bar inside wraps around to the outside deck as well. Parking has been streamlined, and the plants/florals on the patio are beautiful. All our glassware and plates were a fancy plastic-type material, so you don't have to worry about breakage. DRINKS: I ordered the Minero margarita: reposado + añejo tequilas, fresh lime & oj, curaçao, agave ($13). I ordered it spicy, and it was! The chili lime salt rim was delicious. They use Sonic-style ice in their margaritas. APPETIZERS: The Minero wings were charcoal grilled, tossed with valentina, and a good portion size for $16. They were spicy but had amazing flavor. I admit I'm a bit wimpy when it comes to spice, so my lips were burning after a few wings. The broiled oysters bravos with chipotle peppers, cotija cheese, and mezcal ($19) were unique and delicious. Portion size was 6. ENTREES: I was skeptical about what could be special about a Minero quesadilla, but the steak quesadilla ($19) was by far the best and most unique I've ever had. It's listed as coming with chihuahua cheese, chipotle, pickled peppers and onions, crema, and cilantro. It's pressed/grilled in a coating of cheese on the outside which sets it apart, and the flavors inside are a party! The best part of my meal was the Yucatán style local catch ($34). The fish of the day was swordfish, and it was prepared with crispy fingerling potatos, pickled yum yum peppers, pibil and sauce. I've never had anything quite like it! DESSERT: The Mexican chocolate mousse ($8) was a savory dish with a passion fruit glaze and churro crunch on top. I could have taken 5 more to go for the week! SERVICE: Every staff member was kind, warm, welcoming, smiling, attentive, thorough, and excited to be there! I do not recall ever seeing so many people happy to be at work, from the executive chef, the executive sous chef, bartenders, servers, hosts, etc. Minero is scheduled to open today, June 9, for limited dinner service. They'll expand to lunch/brunch soon. Minero is easily going to be a top restaurant choice on Johns Island. They're already accomplishing great things!
