I was honored to attend Minero's soft opening for friends and family on June 8. Everything was incredible!
SPACE:
The Old Fat Hen layout remnant still exist in the location of the bar, host station, walls/tables, etc. However, Minero has completely upgraded the interior, added more bathrooms, and made a massive outdoor dining space. It looks like the outdoor space is larger than the interior! Ceiling fans created a great breeze that made dining enjoyable outside. They have heaters ready for the winter and big TVs for sporting events. The bar inside wraps around to the outside deck as well. Parking has been streamlined, and the plants/florals on the patio are beautiful. All our glassware and plates were a fancy plastic-type material, so you don't have to worry about breakage.
DRINKS:
I ordered the Minero margarita: reposado + añejo tequilas, fresh lime & oj, curaçao, agave ($13). I ordered it spicy, and it was! The chili lime salt rim was delicious. They use Sonic-style ice in their margaritas.
APPETIZERS:
The Minero wings were charcoal grilled, tossed with valentina, and a good portion size for $16. They were spicy but had amazing flavor. I admit I'm a bit wimpy when it comes to spice, so my lips were burning after a few wings.
The broiled oysters bravos with chipotle peppers, cotija cheese, and mezcal ($19) were unique and delicious. Portion size was 6.
ENTREES:
I was skeptical about what could be special about a Minero quesadilla, but the steak quesadilla ($19) was by far the best and most unique I've ever had. It's listed as coming with chihuahua cheese, chipotle, pickled peppers and onions, crema, and cilantro. It's pressed/grilled in a coating of cheese on the outside which sets it apart, and the flavors inside are a party!
The best part of my meal was the Yucatán style local catch ($34). The fish of the day was swordfish, and it was prepared with crispy fingerling potatos, pickled yum yum peppers, pibil and sauce. I've never had anything quite like it!
DESSERT:
The Mexican chocolate mousse ($8) was a savory dish with a passion fruit glaze and churro crunch on top. I could have taken 5 more to go for the week!
SERVICE:
Every staff member was kind, warm, welcoming, smiling, attentive, thorough, and excited to be there! I do not recall ever seeing so many people happy to be at work, from the executive chef, the executive sous chef, bartenders, servers, hosts, etc.
Minero is scheduled to open today, June 9, for limited dinner service. They'll expand to lunch/brunch soon. Minero is easily going to be a top restaurant choice on Johns Island. They're already accomplishing great things!
