A Cantonese menu of dim sum, hot pots, and seafood, plus cocktails presented in a modern space.
"If you’re looking for a break from tourists after your visiting friends force you to go on a boat tour, show them the Sears Tower, and have a way-too-long photoshoot at the Bean, head to MingHin for dim sum. The large dining space may look a little fancy, but it’s casual enough for a family-style meal where you will find kids (and adults) leaping across the table when the sesame buns arrive. The menu is long, with options like juicy shrimp and pork shumai, shrimp crepes, steamed BBQ pork buns, and desserts like puffy egg custard tarts. A visit here makes all the Bean selfies worth it." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru
"If you need a place to take your out-of-town relatives after being forced to show them the Bean, grab dim sum at MingHin. The massive dining space might look fancy, but it’s casual enough for a family-style meal where you'll feel comfortable leaping across the table for the last dumpling. Their menu is extensive, with options like juicy shrimp and pork shumai, sweet and savory short ribs with honey sauce, stuffed sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, and desserts like puffy egg custard tarts or creamy mango pudding. With all the choices, there’s bound to be something that you, your cousins, and your mysterious great-aunt Miriam (who you all suspect is secretly a member of the CIA) will like." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru
"As noted, dim sum is a great place for a kid. International restaurants often cater to children with special plates and cups. The small portions allow kids to try different things without committing to disaster. Ming Hin, which has several locations across Chicago and the suburbs, is one of the city’s most consistent spots for dim sum. The Lakeshore East location also offers limited outdoor seats, but dim sum might be better enjoyed in a big group so the Lazy Susan trays can be best utilized. Just make sure the kids don’t get too amused spinning the thing." - Ashok Selvam, Naomi Waxman
"The only thing better than all-day dim sum is all-day dim sum at Millennium Park. This local Chinese mini-chain has an outpost in Lakeshore East, so feast on a spread of dumplings, buns, crepes, and more while hanging out on Chicago’s front yard. Pre-orders can be placed here." - Samantha Nelson, Eater Staff
"If you have relatives in town to see a gritty staging of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, make reservations at Minghin. Though its large dining space may have a sleek, refined look, this Chinese restaurant is casual enough for a family-style meal where jumping across the table to snag the last dumpling is socially acceptable. Their dim sum menu is long, and that’s what you should focus on while you’re here. Our favorites are the juicy shrimp and pork shumai, chewy rice crepes filled with beef, steamed BBQ pork buns, and desserts like puffy egg custard tarts." - adrian kane, john ringor
