The Mission Lunch Guide

"Mission Picnic is an ideal spot to pick up a sandwich or a salad before heading to Dolores for an afternoon of sunshine and trying to hear your music over everyone else’s. We like the kale caesar and cobb salads, and the sandwiches are spot on too - the pollo pesto and smoked salmon are both good options." - taylor abrams, jess basser sanders, will kamensky

Duna Tests New Spinoff in Last Days Before Relocating - Eater SF

"Smokebread is a new fast-casual spinoff from the chefs of Duna, specializing in riffs on classic Hungarian potato flatbreads, langos. It will be open for a limited run at 983 Valencia Street with plans for a permanent location in the future. I ordered a mission cheesesteak, and it was $14 and it was very good. The staff were very nice and quick. I got my order in 4 minutes. The interior was also quite modern and the place felt comfortably.

Google
This review is for a takeout/office catering order so I can’t speak to the vibe, but the staff here are so kind and accommodating and the food was great. I have celiac so I was nervous when my office chose a sandwich spot for a catered lunch, but when I called mission picnic they assured me they could make my sandwich on gluten free bread and would follow appropriate procedures to prevent cross contamination. My sandwich came packed in a separate bag apart from the items with gluten and was marked “gluten free” in multiple places. I felt really safe and the sandwich was great!

Google
Got invited to a sandwich today and I couldn’t thank him enough. We went halves on the BLT and the San Franciscan sandwiches. They were just the right size - not too big for my hands and to bite, but big enough to keep my hunger satisfied. The guacamole had a kick to it and the bacon had a soft crunch. Staff is wonderfully delightful too. Had a great time enjoying my meal and company…

Google
Really awesome place. Staff was friendly and remembered me during several visits while I was working locally. They also supported me with gluten free bread which is really appreciated. Sandwiches were super delicious. Definitely recommend.

Google
lovely spot in the mission full of smiling employees and delicious food! stopped by mission picnic to grab lunch in the middle of the workday—it was hard picking between their menu options but the employees gave me recommendations and even told me about their personal favorites :-). ended up going with the picnic club based on their recs and am floored at how tasty this sandwich is (may be one of my fav sandwiches in the mission)! super well balanced in freshness and savory-ness, and the bread holds up super well to the sandwich without being too bready or hard to bite on the outside. honestly, this sandwich was perfect, and I would easily come back for it every time. service was quick, and they even gave us some free cookies to go with our lunch ❤️. highly recommend giving mission picnic a try if you’re in the neighborhood :-).

Tomatoe Soup Side-Felt a little under the weather and was craving this. First time coming by Mission Picnic and love it. Best ive ever tried. Under $6 for a nice small little soup.

Google
Great sandwich shop in the mission !! Friendly staff, quick service and a cool modern atmosphere... Unless you want to take your sandwich to go, to Delores which is close by. I tried the vegan sandwich and it was super tasty!! Highly recommend this spot if you are in the mission

Google
Clean, fast service at lunch time. Love that the menu has vegan items labeled! I had the Planter and it was great. Turmeric chickpeas is not something I've seen in a vegan sandwich before and it was really great. Lots of perfectly fresh avocado! The only thing I'd change is the bread. It was a little dry.
google avatar

Mindy L.

Yelp
This was a literal Mission: Sandwich! My friend picked these up and we headed out for a hike + picnic. Thoroughly enjoyed the Planter veggie sandwich, pairs nicely with great views

Yelp
TL;DR - Great food & floor staff service, tho the manager Sonja is negligent and never there during peak hours. Foods great and I've been a customer since the start. Earned a TON of loyalty program points so I finally used them to pay for a meal. I pointed out the potato salad in that meal had turned rotten and they refunded only a fraction of the points. The manager is never there during lunch (?) and failed to call me back to address it. I'll not go again, it's clear management doesn't care.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
The best empanadas I've EVER tasted. Super phat empanadas and filled with goodness. Comes with tasty dip (chimichurri?). Yum. The place is clean and does a lot of catering and Togo but there's nice clean seats for too. The staff was friendly with a modern twist to a taqueria. Nice place. I'm coming back again. Their breakfast is calling me.
google avatar

K P.

Yelp
Had the ablt with some fried eggs and man does it hit. Not overly greasy or salty like a lot of sandwiches. Their sides are great as well

Yelp
Working my way through all the breakfast burritos in San Francisco. It's taking a while. Anyway. Stopped by Mission Picnic last week for theirs. It was... unusual. It has eggs, soyrizo, hash browns, cheese, grilled peppers, sour cream, and salsa. Sounds good. But the overwhelming flavor was "sweet peppers". There was a ton of them, right in the middle of the burrito. Like a tube of peppers. Very sweet peppers. It was fresh, well prepared, and hot. And the restaurant itself looked nice/clean. But I just couldn't get over the sweet pepper flavor. If the peppers had been swapped for more hash browns and more cheese, it would have been a solid balance. Overall, if you like grilled sweet peppers, this is the breakfast burrito for you. Otherwise, maybe try a lunch sandwich.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
The sandwich was ok but not impressive. It seems a bit dry lacking flavor. Maybe it needed a dressing or extra sauce (all which cost extra for each). The service was quick because I ordered online and it was ready for pickup at the time indicated. Sadly, I will probably not return because I have tasted better sandwich places with much more flavor.

Yelp
Since I've started working in the area for the past couple months. I needed a go to spot for a bite in between clients. And this spot never disappoints. I usually get the empanadas or breakfast burrito. And still running through the menu. Customer service is unmatched. They genuinely take care of you every time. Great outdoor eating area to enjoy your food right on the Valencia corridor. Highly recommend the chimichurri sauce too!

Yelp
ABLT for $13 This comes with applewood smoked bacon, avocado, tomato, lettuce, and garlic aioli on ciabatta. Super delicious sandwich! Doesn't taste heavy at all. All of the vetables was really fresh. The bacon was smokey and they give a perfect amount of it. I love that it also comes with a side of salad & a cookie!

Shannon N.

Yelp
I just had a delicious sandwich from Mission Picnic. Turkey, bacon, avocado exactly the way I like it. The turkey and bacon were definitely a cut above what I've gotten at other delis and the sandwich had just the right amount of everything. Excellent bread. And the family who owns the deli is super nice. They want to make your sandwich the way you like it. And they will! 10/10 recommend.
google avatar

Ranjan P.

Yelp
I wanna live next to this place. Or better yet, I want this to live next to me lol :-) Their sandwiches slap. How good can a turkey sand be? You haven't tasted one till you've tried their version. It sounds a bit hackneyed, cliched, but no I'm telling you might jot hav lived your fullest best life till you'd sunk your teeth into their fresh roasted turkey with Swiss and mayo and lettuce and sprouts and cranberry sauce ... on wheat roll. There, I said it: cranberry sauce. It's sooooooo freaking tantalizingly good. The portion is generous to the point I got FOUR meals out of it, each serving I supplemented with a bit of fruit and chips, and I was set. The sandwich is more than the sum of its parts, and I suppose I could make the same thing at home but I doubt it would taste this yummy and decadent. OMG I'm telling you, if you're in the neighborhood you must stop here and treat yourself. We stumbled on this accidentally because we were at another restaurant and I couldn't eat their stuff because it was inedibly bad, so had to grab something to go for home. I also got their salad with goat cheese and green goddess dressing with seeds, watermelon radish and little gems with red leaf lettuces and avocado, and again this was pretty straightforward and simple, but they sprinkle fairy dust and unicorns and rainbows and magic on their food, clearly, because after all what else could explain this fevered dream food? Their customer service super efficient and friendly, they crank out those sands and sandwiches, which btw., you can also add your own protein of choice, which I didn't but you could. Just sayin. The prices? Are you kidding me? I'd pay double easily for. The pristine execution of their stuff. It's hard to come by something this gorgously delicious. Love love love!

Yelp
We had sandwiches and salads catered yesterday for a work event and everybody loved the food! Everything was packaged really well as well. 10/10! I'll be going back soon on my own!
google avatar

Yelp
A most delicious breakfast burrito cooked fresh to order! It comes with egg, soyrizo, hash browns, cheese, sautéed peppers, salsa, and sour cream. I ordered mine with bacon and avocado added -- I asked for my bacon extra crispy and it was perfect!

Francisco M.

Yelp
Wow. What a find. Empanadas are to die for. Great service, chimichurri sauce was fresh too.

Yelp
Expensive. Small Portions. Okay Sandwiches at Best. Takeout, Indoor, & Outdoor Dining. Friendly Staff. Residential, Parking Lot, & Metered Parking. Some COVID-19 Precautions. See Below for More Info: Expensive: The most memorable aspect of my dining experience at Mission Picnic was the expensive cost. Sandwiches are $12 and up. Small Portions: The portions at Mission Picnic are small. I had a pastrami, turkey, provolone sandwich because I was feeling hungry. However, as you can see from my photo, the sandwich consisted of a minuscule slice of each meat. Hence, more of a place for a snack or your own sandwich and less so for sharing. Takeout, Indoor, & Outdoor Dining: Mission Picnic has three dining options: takeout, indoor, and outdoor. The indoor seating consist of a few tables for duos and four people and high bar seating. The outdoor seating is one shared table near the Mission Picnic door. Friendly Staff: Mission Picnic staff are friendly. I was warmly greeted when arriving and departing. Residential, Parking Lot, & Metered Parking: In the immediate area around Mission Picnic, your two car parking options include a paid lot and meters. The lot is on Barlett one block away and meters run along Valencia. You can get lucky and get free residential parking, but it's pretty hard. Some COVID-19 Precautions: Staff were wearing masks as were customers when they were ordering and picking up their food. However, COVID-19 vaccination is not checked for indoor nor outdoor dining.

Yelp
First time having lunch at Mission Picnic today, will definitely be back. First impression was a welcoming, clean, environment and a super helpful and friendly team. Had the San Franciscan sandwich which was super good. Thank you for the ordering advice and great meal!

Razz M.

Yelp
Ordered lunch for a client meeting. The client is particular about his diet so I thought a side of fruit would be a good accompaniment to his salad. I was charged $4 for this "side of fruit" - one cube of pineapple, one cube of melon, half a strawberry and three blueberries. It's nothing like what they show in their menu photo. So disappointing and very embarrassing.

Yelp
Today is the perfect day to get a cosmic reminder to not get cocky. The hb and I made our way to the Mission to pick up a kit for my Yelp event on Monday. But before that I wanted a salad and he wanted a sandwich. So we decided on Mission Picnic. Ordered online and ready for pickup when we arrived. I was feeling confident, and with new applied eye cream, looking bright and awake. Now I worked a short bit of time in this part of the Mission a few years ago, so like Dr. Ken Jeong on the Masked Singer would say, "I KNOW EXACTLY where this is. Follow me..." And I let hb to a spot where I thought Mission Picnic would be, only it wasn't there. Puzzled, I led him through a back alley street to another street thinking well maybe I'm mistaken and it's on this other street to find that it's not located there either. Hb pulled out his phone and checked address..."hmm, honey, it says VALENCIA street." Me: O__o Me: ...maybe they moved?!?!!? Well they moved about a year ago, and the newer space is very spacious and lovely. The staff was also very nice, wore masks correctly. The restaurant looks very clean. We picked up our food and decided to eat right outside. I loved my Cobb salad. It was delicious. His sandwich was pretty solid as well. Ahhh Yes, just as I remembered...except not quite... Hb was nice about it and did not ribbed me too much.

Yelp
Hello, Mission Picnic! Note: This review is not geared at the quality of the food--but as an encouragement to expand your menu to offer more plant-based items. Eating plant-based has become extremely important to me, so I'm taking the time to ask for this publicly at the places I go. I'm hoping others who share my sentiments will also do the same, wherever they go. I know that restaurants want to serve what their customers want, and need to know our opinions. Eating plant-based can be just as exciting, delicious, and full of variety as any other diet, but yes, it takes some work to tweak things. There are great meat substitutes on the market now, as well as dairy replacements--many of which are excellent. And the market is continuing to grow rapidly. I'm wishing you many years of business success. I'll be so happy to come back more regularly (as well as sing your praises) if the menu expands to more plant-based options. Please do reach out if you'd like any suggestions/ideas.

Yelp
I have been going to Mission Picnic since they were around the corner, and I really like the new location on Valencia. The space is large and open, and they have a very well isolated parklet system set up during Covid. Their Mozzarella sandwich remains to be my favorite. We have had mostly all the others and like them as well. The staff is friendly and the service is fast. Perfect mid day lunch in the sunny mission!

Yelp
I am always ordering here for our company lunches. Our order is personally delivered by the owner and it is always on point. The food is fresh and delicious and the team is always satisfied with their meal. I recommend the BBQ chicken sandwich and always add bacon & avo. All their sandwiches are delicious. The Garden Goddess salad is always a favorite as well. Their cookies are a must and always disappear once our order arrives. Great spot in the Mission. Order here for your next corporate meal!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches. Nice staff, music choice never disappoints, and great beer/soda selection. The chips are good as well. I personally like adding chicken and bacon on the capri. Great spot in the city for tasty sandwiches.

Yelp
My job ordered catering from this place is was bomb! Each employee got a box that comprised of a sandwich, a salad, and cookie. I don't generally eat sandwiches often, but when I do, they have to be really good. I chose a steak sandwich from the box and was pleasantly surprised by the combination of the thinly sliced steak and red bell peppers. The peppers were sweet and the meat was savory, making it an interesting combination. Not something I would particularly order myself but at glad I tried it! The portions were huge and ended up only eating half of one. I later ate the other half for dinner! The bread was a great texture and wasn't too hard or dry. The ratio of bread to meat and veggies was pretty spot on. The cookie and salad was okay but not the star of the show. I can't wait to go to this place in person and have a more intimate experience.
google avatar

Jesse F.

Yelp
That was so incredibly bland. I got the Mission Cheesesteak and it tasted like nothing. Really, the only flavor I could detect was the arugula. I had no idea you could make a sandwich so devoid of taste. I applaud them for somehow pulling it off. I'm not sure I could do it if I tried. After the first or second bite I was just eating to stop being hungry.
google avatar

Pepe W.

Yelp
Nice inside and quiet. However, I ordered a ABLT sandwich, this 'wich was gosh-awful because it was bathed in mustard. I couldn't taste the bacon, the avocado, and the veggies at all. Now my body's smelly very mustard-ly and my mouth still reeling in from a bombardment of mustard! Oo for, were these line cooks from Ike's Sandwich Shop? I could go back next time and tell them to PUT....THE... MUSTARD... On the side!! If they cannot do that, this will probably pretty no-go unless you like taking a bath in a tub full of muuuuustaaaaaard! :-(
google avatar

Allison W.

Yelp
This is an okay spot for salads and sandwiches. You can order online or walk up to order. I came in when they first opened and placed an order. A simple club sandwich w/o tomatoes- while I could've opted for something they may be known more for, my sandwich overall lacked any flavor. It was also pricy for the overall quality of the sandwich. Very sparse on the fillings for the sandwich. It seemed all the people who came after me ordered salads so I'd be open to coming back and trying something new! They do have a good selection of drinks and some chips.
google avatar

Ali M.

Yelp
Amazing! I highly recommend this place for lunches. I bought 11 sandwich boxes for my office lunch and each one was labeled with everyone's name like I requested. Which is hard to come by believe it or not. Also, each box came with a sandwich, a side salad and a cookie of our choice. Such an awesome option and for a good price at that! You really can't go wrong. I would definitely order more in the future the next time the office needs sandwiches.
google avatar

Tyler S.

Yelp
This place is awesome. New location (to me) and the sandwich is just as good as I remember from 2014. I always get the picnic club though I'm sure the other sandwiches arenust as good!
google avatar

May O.

Yelp
The cashier recommended the planter sandwich to me because I asked him which ones were the most popular. I was originally going to get lox sandwich or the cranturkey. However, I made the impulsive decision to listen to him and I'm so glad I did! Everything from the chickpeas, the fresh vegetables to the toasty bread was amazing! The bread reminded me of the banh mi bread. I couldn't get enough! If you're vegan you need to try this! If you're not, you especially need to try it! I finished my meal feeling satisfied and healthy, just the perfect lunch at a picnic!
google avatar

Cathy L.

Yelp
Just look at this gorgeous cross section on the San Franciscan sandwich!! The taste was quite good and while the sandwich seemed on the smaller side at first, it ended up being the perfect amount of food - I was satisfied and not uncomfortably stuffed. After ordering inside, grab a seat in one of their cute outdoor booths to enjoy the Valencia St vibes. The staff is incredibly nice and they brought our sandwiches out to us.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Usually get the San Franciscan (which is spectacular) but ventured over to the Breakfast Burrito today. Added Avocado. Excellent and well balanced ingredient constructed, not messy. Super tasty and not a gut bomb.
google avatar

Tyler C.

Yelp
Had the cheesesteak- it was great. What stood out to me was that it was pretty light. I felt full when I left and I didn't want to fall asleep. A big win. At $12 I thought the price was fair too. The restaurant has a pretty laid back vibe and nice decor. Definitely a nice pit stop on the way to the park. As a quick place to grab a bite I think they nailed what they were going for.

Jacob S.

Yelp
Super good sandwiches! A bit pricey, but not for Valencia. The staff are friendly. I get a sandwich every other day, half for lunch one day, half the next. Filling without being "full"
google avatar

Ed U.

Yelp
If you are in need of eating a salad in a closet, here's the next best option as this is a tiny space on 22nd near Valencia with just three little tables. Luckily I was here after the lunch rush though frankly it wouldn't take much to produce a rush, like two people who want a salad at the same time. There are plenty to choose from, five entree-size ones and two sides. Sandwiches as well, over a dozen listed on the chalkboard. Presumably most people must order to-go... But hell, I came to eat there. Waitress? Waitress?? Oh, OK, I have to order at their tiny counter. I went for the $10.95 Beets and Greens which came in a box anyway, but it was a big box chock full of goodness - roasted beets, pear slices, berries, fennel, quinoa, goat cheese, toasted pecans, all of it on a bed of mixed greens and drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette. It was all so neatly organized that it looked like a bento box (photo: http://bit.ly/2HxPrTD). Delicious and plenty left for later. FOOD - 4 stars...really robust salad enough for another meal AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...did I mention it's a tiny space? SERVICE - 3.5 stars...cordial TOTAL - 4 stars...when you know you should have a salad

Cj L.

Yelp
I love this place. They really make great quality food thats delicious. It doesn't look like much from the outside - but it is delicious. The green goddess salad was so fresh and delicious. They give a good sized portion. The breakfast burrito was delicious as well. This place should be way more busy in my opinion. They do a good thing and they are always friendly as well.
google avatar

Dinner With K.

Yelp
Very nice breakfast sandwich on poppy seed roll. Bacon and a very good amount of fluffy eggs. Very moist inside. Delish!
google avatar

Yelp
I finally did a lunch takeout order from Mission Picnic and I was not disappointed at all! It was the first rainy day in SF for the winter so I opted to get a hearty cranturkey sandwich that was piled high with turkey, cheese, micro greens, crispy lettuce, and deliciously tart cranberry compote. It all tasted delightful and the crust on the bread gave it a very nice crunch. The only thing I wish is that the sandwich came warm for this dreary day, but I wasn't too mad because it tasted amazing! I paired this with a side of their tomato soup which was absolutely delicious and cozy. A friend and I ordered takeout through their website and the food was made and ready to be picked up within 15 mins! Mission Picnic is speedy, tasty, and reasonably priced! I will be back to try more of the menu very very soon!!!
google avatar

Caitlin S.

Yelp
I got the cranturkey and a diet coke. The sandwich was pretty good, nothing out of this world, but decent. They had beer and a few other alcoholic beverages available and a decent amount of indoor and outdoor seating (everyone was getting to-go food when I was there though). I prefer Valencia Subs and Rhea's for sandwiches, but it's still worth a try.
google avatar

Yingtao Z.

Yelp
With there was a better bread:filling ratio but it's a bit too much bread for my taste.
google avatar

Ziyan C.

Yelp
We were about 10 minutes away from Mission Picnic when I realized I could save time by ordering ahead. I created a Caviar account, made an order, and it was ready for pick up by the time we got there! (~12:30pm on a Saturday.) This was an easy, quick, and seamless experience. Oh and of course, their sandwiches are always amazing. * Pollo Pesto ($9.95) - 4.5 stars Soft, moist chicken chunks. Flavorful pesto. Crunchy bread. And still warm by the time we walked to Dolores. Can't ask for much more! * San Franciscan ($9.50) - 4 stars Much more savory sandwich, perfect for my bf!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Super disappointed that their restaurant menu is hugely different from their catering menu. As mentioned to the cashier on my visit, our office goes crazy whenever Mission Picnic is the lunch option for the week...and that baked salmon?! AMAZING. Simply, amazing. That charred edges around the salmon pieces! Welp, came here on a Sunday for lunch, only to find out that the Baked Salmon isn't on their menu. In the restaurant. Period. In fact, they seem to focus more on their catering biz. Makes sense. But their restaurant menu is extremelyyyy limiting. Like six mixed salad options. And you can add some proteins (but not the Baked Salmon). They accommodated my failed request with Smoked Salmon. Mehhh not the same. The bud and I also got a side of the orzo salad as well. I meannn for half an orzo salad and a Kale Cesar salad + smoked salmon for $23pp seems a bit pricey. IMHO their catering is much better (salad bar style) than their restaurant menu options. 3 stars
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
Was pleasantly surprised with how good this place was! If you're looking for a quick, healthy bite (sandwiches/salad) with a nice, trendy ambience, then this is the perfect spot. We got the lox sandwich and the Planter (vegan) sandwich - would highly recommend both! Read some reviews about small portions but we did not find that to be the case - both of us were quite full after. Food deets: - Vegan sandwich: I'm definitely a meat-lover but decided to try this since the avocado & roasted chickpeas beckoned to me. It did not disappoint - the sandwich came out warm, inside a perfectly toasted wheat roll, and had tons of flavor. Would get again! - Lox sandwich: Tried some of my bf's; the salmon was fresh, ingredients well-balanced, and the bread was also perfectly crunchy yet soft. Yum!

Yelp
Always looking for good vegan food. This sandwich called the planter was DELICIOUS Will be back for sure. Thank you.
google avatar

Lavanya N.

Yelp
Got a planter sandwich via a box catered by work. You could not taste anything other than turmeric. It literally tasted like turmeric paste. I didn't taste garlic or any other part of the hummus. The small amount of veggies in the sandwich did taste good when you got a bite of just that. The cookie that came with the box was good though!

Luke S.

Yelp
The CranTurkey is one of the best sandwiches I've had in my life. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Priscilla C.

Yelp
I wish they were cheaper and more affordable to the Mission community. They are clearly gentrifiers. Very expensive for what you are getting. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is because their employees are VERY sweet and caring. All of them are latino workers who are clearly hard workers. In terms of food its good. Nothing insane. I usually get the Cranturkey sandwhich. its $11 for turkey, cheese, cranberry and sprouts. I also hate how early they close.
google avatar

Will V.

Yelp
Ordered through UberEats and when it was received both of my sandwiches had 2 slices of meat on it and was mainly bread. I also ordered 2 of their potatoes salad ($4 each) and received that mass produced potato salad from a bin that tasted absolutely disgusting. For $45 you'd expect higher quality of food.
google avatar

Cheryl M.

Yelp
Mission Picnic went above and beyond for our 50th anniversary picnic. The sandwiches and salads were delicious and huge. I highly recommend mission picnic for your next get together!!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious! I ordered the Capri and it was amazing , my friend ordered the the planter sandwich and wow definitely recommend this spot , also a quick walk away from Dolores park :)

Yelp
The food is super tasty, the music was chill, the staff were super friendly and the prices are super fair. What more can you ask for?
