Inflation Has Come for Mister Softee | Eater NY

"On hot summer days there's no city sound that triggers a Pavlovian response for me like the Mister Softee jingle, but I read that “melting profits” from inflation are now threatening operators' livelihoods. Vendors are facing rising gas costs and ingredient bills — one operator reported paying $41 for three gallons of vanilla ice cream, up from $27 — and some trucks have raised prices accordingly. I've seen reports that a soft-serve cone can now cost as much as $8, putting it on par with fancier shops in the city and undercutting the affordability that made Mister Softee beloved; increasingly, truck owners are weighing whether it's time to call it quits." - Eater Staff

Taste Test: Vending-Machine Soft Serve at the Moxy Hotel

"For a classic alternative, we'd hit a passing Mister Softee truck — you can expect perfect, human-made swirls, plenty of toppings, and you're supporting human jobs, so it's the better choice if quality presentation and preserving work are priorities." - Nikita Richardson

National Vanilla Ice Cream Day Is the Bogus Food Day We Need

"A ubiquitous soft-serve vendor whose trucks and drive-through windows dispense countless cones of plain vanilla that serve as a comforting, unpretentious treat. The vanilla soft-serve is valued for its pacifying, almost ‘unflavored’ quality and appealing, slightly foamy texture—simple, nostalgic, and reliably soothing, ideal for curling up in a favorite Slanket or grabbing an easy, everyday indulgence." - Hugh Merwin

Google
Delicious soft serve and milkshakes. Many selections to choose from with toppings. Service was fast and friendly.

Eric “Hello, Good Morning” H

Google
So good. I didn't know it was here till I saw it. They have so many options. Im going to have to have to stop every time I drive thru Camarillo!!! YUM!!

Andrea E.

Google
Old fashioned ice cream shop. The shop itself has a retro feel to it, and it even has some classic arcade games in it (only a couple). I tried the fried ice cream cone and it was pretty good! To me it tasted more like a chocolate dipped come with cinnamon sugar corn flakes on the outside (the cone was not actually fried) but it was still good so I was not disappointed

Google
⭐☆☆☆☆ Not coming back Stopped by Mister Softee and had a really gross experience. The worker was scraping the bottom of the ice cream bucket to serve a cup and dropped some on a dirty counter. She looked right at us, knew we saw, and still kept going like it was nothing. It was honestly disgusting. I ended up tossing the ice cream and just ordered something else, just to avoid a scene. Definitely made me lose my appetite. Not okay.

Google
This place was jumping! The line was long, but moved fast! The employees did a great job at keeping everything moving and still made you feel important and welcome. The ice cream was so good we forgot to take photos before we ate almost all of it!

Shandon W.

Google
Kinda over priced for basic ice cream but it was pretty good. I wouldn’t return because I can just get the same thing at Dairy Queen for a better price. I got the banana boat forgot to take before pics. They were also out of cherry dip

Eric G.

Google
Great ice cream and great service. I just came by here to kill some time and was very happy. I will be back.

Joe R.

Google
Super great place, quaint feeling old school ice cream shop. Cherry and blue raspberry dipped ice cream cones and some great shaved ice. Give them a shot. They won't disappoint.

Yelp
Five star experience at Mr. softy. The soft serve itself was very nice, and they even had interesting flavors like pumpkin and pineapple, so my dad got a twist! The parenting was altogether for sure, but I'm very glad we tried it. I got a mint chocolate chip shake! The shake was very nice and the mint chips in it were the same type of chocolate that they used to coat the ice cream soft serve I will be back! The service was really good and they even had free stickers at the checkout counter, which is perfect for me scrapbooking a great trip! I was also impressed by the number of movie posters they had. Inside the restaurant it seems like an old café or diner, but it is still light in area like any other nice ice cream parlor

Yelp
It's been a hot minute since we've visited Camarillo, but since we were here to shop at the outlets, a little grab of lunch was first on the "To Do" list. After a a sandwich and salad at Nona's Italian Deli just a short walk up the street, we decided a sugar boost at Mr. Softee would be perfect on this hot August Tuesday - and it was! Hubs elected for a basic Softee chocolate in a cup and I was keen on an old fashioned Root Beer Float. I went for the smaller size, 21oz, without thinking how large that really is. My goodness! Served with a can of A&W Root Beer, it was creamy and delicious and reminiscent of Summer afternoons playing on the Slip n Slide and running through the sprinklers! Inside evokes traditional ice cream parlor sentiment, with a few popular games thrown in for fun. More attention to cleaning around the floors of tables and windows is suggested, but the single co-ed bathroom was kept tidy and THAT is greatly appreciated. Service is cheerful and friendly. I would also add "patient" as it took a minute for me to decide. If I'm being honest, and you know I will be, I wish I would've caught the daily special of Chocolate Covered Strawberry Sundae for $6.50. But, thankfully, there's always a next time. Cheers! "CC"

Yelp
A simple treat I love to enjoy when I'm in Ventura. They also have creative sundae options or something simple as soft serve with toppings.
google avatar

Brent O.

Yelp
Love coming in here. It's really an old school feel ice cream spot. Friendly service and good music. Historical pix form Softee and video games and pinball. Love the soft serve dip.
google avatar

Arlene E.

Yelp
It was our first time here, we definitely did enjoy it. I will say that it is mostly for old-fashioned ice cream, and soft serve, so if you're looking for more flavors, this isn't the place. We got one strawberry sundae, a rainbow, water ice, and a chocolate dipped cone. Everything was pretty good, the water ice was all right not the best but good. Reason for one star missing is because the lady who assisted us at the cash register seemed irritated when my son couldn't decide what he wanted. There was no line behind us so we did tell her "sorry , It was his first time and to see if we can get a few minutes " and she looked really irritated. He's only 10 so that was upsetting, however, will be open to come back if in area.
google avatar

Brighton B.

Yelp
If you think you have seen all of the amazing things that can be made using soft serve ice cream in a myriad of flavors, concoctions, and treats; then you have to come here. The ice cream celebrations are truly magnificent at this fun and engaging establishment. They have a lot of very young and courteous students (I assume) that work there that are very customer-focused and will provide recommendations if you are looking for one. If you want to be the coolest parent on the block, consider hiring them for a birthday party, pool party, or any other special occasion, you will definitely score cool parent points, which we all can use.
google avatar

Jess B.

Yelp
Stopped by here after a late lunch. The inside of the restaurant makes me feel like I'm being transported back in time. Definitely gives a more retro vintage feel with the black and white checkered floor. The workers were really nice and quick with my order. I ordered a double scoop of the coconut vanilla bliss with pineapple topping and my husband ordered the soft serve with Oreo toppings. I really liked the coconut ice cream; had the flavor of the coconut and the vanilla flavor wasn't overpowering. I wish the pineapple was fresh but it was in this thick and sweet sauce. It made it a little too sweet.

Yelp
Who doesn't love soft serve ice cream! Always hits the spot coming here! Thanks to the staff for being so patient with my groups random take over. Nothing quite like a bunch of goths eating ice cream at Mister Softees!

Arlene N.

Yelp
Small place but the ice cream Is the best. Services is very quick too. My kids rather come here than to any hyped new ice cream place.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Your truck rolled through Port Hueneme today and totally made my day. The worker, sad I didn't get his name, was awesome and made great ice creams for my dad and me. He was a little ways down the street before we decided we would take the plunge, but he heard my dad whistle. Thank you!
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
Delicious smooth ice cream on a warm day definitely hits the spot!!! The brownie sundae is a favorite! The service is fast and friendly. The parlor is always clean. Great place!!
google avatar

Cassie C.

Yelp
Yum! Now that I know this place is close by I'll definitely have to stop by more this summer. Great soft serve with some classic flavors. And - they even have dole whip soft serve! I got a vanilla soft serve with rainbow sprinkles and a cherry which was semi stressful to eat as it melted but tasted delish and looked so pretty :)

Blake J.

Yelp
We had the Mister Softee truck at our wedding and everyone LOVED it! The soft serve service was a HIT. They were very easy to work with, communicate with, and the day of everything went smooth.

Nick E.

Yelp
Great soft serve! Got a hot fudge sundae and a vanilla chocolate swill dipped in chocolate! Better than advertised!
google avatar

Erica G.

Yelp
Always excited to hear the ice cream truck coming . This time , I went to the farmers market at Channel Islands, Oxnard. Prices have been going up :/ I got a cup with vanilla ice cream , topped with strawberry crunch which tasted stale. Good customer service . Clean ice clean truck. 3.5 overall for me

Brenda M.

Yelp
Soft serve ice cream What a dream! My childhood flashed before my eyes with first bite I had the vanilla chocolate swirl My husband had vanilla Nothing is do good than an ice cream cone on a 85 degree plus day!!! Everyone needs to try how ice cream is meant to be! Thank you Mister Softee Will you be at Oktoberfest next Saturday at Institution Ales Company in Camarillo?? See you there!

Yelp
I'm so glad I found this place on Yelp! The area that it is in is not at all busy so it was easy to find parking. Their ice cream really hit the spot especially on a hot and sunny day. My bf and I got the vanilla cookie crunch and mango Italian ice. The vanilla cookie crunch was my favorite. The soft serve was very rich and creamy. The cookie crunch added a really nice texture to the dessert. Really yummy! The mango Italian ice was also pretty good too. It was just a little too sweet to our liking. I would definitely recommend if you have a sweet tooth for some soft serve! They have so many other options so I'll be back to explore more of what they have on the menu.

Lizzy W.

Yelp
Ordered a large water ice and it was barely filled -- there was a huge gap at the bottom like they just gave up halfway through. While scooping, the guy even said he hated water ice, which honestly explains a lot. For the price, I expected a full cup, not a sad scoop and some attitude. EDIT: As you can see the owner reached out, he was genuinely kind, and offered to send me a gift card to make it right. I really appreciate the great customer service and accountability. Looking forward to giving it another shot!

Yelp
I'm putting my life back together again. My ostrich grooming business is finally getting off of the ground and my social life has picked up now that I've started dating more mature women. Dating younger women made me look foolish and they seemed only to want to go out to fancy restaurants, order expensive drinks, and attend late night events. The woman that I'd been seeing recently is different. Like me, Hazel enjoys long naps, good ice cream and tap water. She and I met at our local public library when we both happened to be looking for a DVD copy of "Footloose" as our evening's entertainment. Last month, Hazel joined me at Mr. Softee to celebrate some of my recent personal successes, and the fact that her youngest son "came about as close to getting paroled as he ever has." Hazel remembers getting delicious ice cream cones from the Mr. Softee ice cream truck as a child in Brooklyn where she grew up during the war. The Vietnam War, I think. Anyway, she has fond memories of buying a Mr. Softee cone for a dime after opening up the fire hydrant on her block and playing in the water during long, hot summer days in New York City. I'm sure it was the Vietnam War. It has to be. I had the brownie sundae and Hazel had a dipped chocolate and vanilla twist cone. The staff at Mr. Softee is great, the store has a wonderful retro vibe, it's clean and tidy, and the company's nearly seventy year history tells you all you need to know about how delicious their ice cream is. Unfortunately, Hazel and I parted ways during our most recent trip to Mr. Softee due to "trust issues." When she left the store to tip her Dial-a-Ride driver she came back in to find me peeking into her purse to check her date of birth on her ID. I don't know what came over me. I suspect it was the fact that Hazel was shocked that Mr. Softee ice cream cones are more than a dollar. Freaked me out a little. I have since returned to Mr. Softee. I pay about six dollars for a dipped cone and it's worth every penny. My romance with Hazel may have ended, but I'm certain I'll continue my relationship with Mr. Softee. It's bittersweet, however. I let the nice young man behind the counter know that a crushed Werther's Original carmel candy is absolutely delicious on top of the Mr. Softee vanilla ice cream cone. I still miss the way Hazel used to delicately place a handful of unwrapped carmels in a sandwich bag that she kept in her purse and then pulverize them on the tabletop by striking them furiously with the heel of one of her orthopedic shoes. Thanks for the memories Mr. Softee! Five Stars.

Yelp
This was my 7th time booking Mister Softee for my children's birthday parties. They are easy to book, always punctual, servers are extremely friendly and all the children & adults get excited When they see the truck pull up . Highly Recommend

Yelp
In the past month, I've tried three Mister Softee locations (Santa Barbara, Ventura and Camarillo) and ordered cherry dip cones. I live in northeast LA and while there are plenty of chocolate dip cones, there are no cherry dips. I'm originally from NY and you can find Cherry dips at plenty of places back east. I love Mister Softee's cherry dips and their prices are very fair.
google avatar

Berta B.

Yelp
There's something about simple soft serve ice cream! So simple but yet so delicious! This time I decided to add rainbow sprinkles and that added another level of flavor and texture that I really enjoyed. I love that it's not super sweet, but just enough sweetness!! They have another flavors or toppings but I prefer to keep it simple! I can't wait for warmer weather to enjoy even more ice cream!
google avatar

Yelp
My wife is a softie for Mister Softee... This is a great ice cream spot in Camarillo. We tried this for the first time in our church on a warm Sunday morning and we've been suckers for it ever since. We love the vanilla soft serve. My wife loves the sprinkles covered option.they also have some other options that we have tried recently, like their cherry flavored shaved ice. The service was good, they had crayons and pages for children so they could be entertained. The ambiance was mellow and clean. Overall great ice cream place.
google avatar

Victor L.

Yelp
Great place to get soft serve ice cream. They can get busy on the weekends so prepare to wait in line. This is a great place for children.

Yelp
If I could give an infinite amount of stars I would! Ever since I could remember, as a child, I have always enjoyed soft-serve ice cream. This sentiment was elevated after boarding a Carnival cruise ship as an adult, which offered unlimited self-serve soft-serve ice cream 24 hours a day... The feeling this partially frozen dairy dessert product gives me is unrivaled. The shutting down of Foster Freeze within El Pollo Loco stores was a sad day for humanity, because it's what I used to have to rely on... When you think about it, there are a ton of businesses (both locally or corporate-owned) selling traditional ice cream, but there are very few, if at all, that specialize in the soft-serve varietal. McDonald's doesn't count or even come close. Since discovering Mister Softee almost 10 years ago, it has become a mainstay in my life. They have seen the early stages of my wife and I as girlfriend and boyfriend, fiancée and fiancé, wife and husband, and now, get to serve our two little ones the beloved taste that is Softee! We even had one of their trucks come out to my daughter's 1st birthday party while it was pouring rain during last year's crazy winter and also intend for one to come out next month for my birthday! In the process of all this and my obsessive patterns of behavior, the love for Softee has transcended beyond my new, immediate family, to close friends and extended family who have also discovered a newfound love for ice cream that allows them to feel like a child again. I have tried a lot of different items on their menu and have never been disappointed, it kind of just depends what mood I am in. I would say that my go-to is a simple vanilla or twist, in a cup, with either type of sprinkles or strawberry cookie crunch. Although it can get very busy, there seems to plenty of room and because it's a quick treat in nature, people don't usually linger around too long in case you are waiting for a table. Staff is made up of mostly teenagers or young adults who for the most part seem happy to be there and eager to please. They always ask me if I want to redeem my rewards, because I have so many points, but I keep telling them that I am racking them up for another free truck party! Just $1091 more to spend until we get there, let's gooo! One request from your biggest fan: BRING BACK THE CAKE BATTER DIP
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
I love soft serve ice cream. This place takes you back in time and gives you that old fashioned high level soft serve ice cream experience. Very clean, great staff, and delicious ice cream!
google avatar

Darwin C.

Yelp
If there's any kind of ice cream I go for, soft serve is always my go to! I always passed by this Mister Softee store but didn't realize it was the same one that drives by the neighborhoods. The sad thing is the ice cream truck is always difficult to find and usually drives by the evening time. No matter, the Camarillo is not too far away! The store gives me classic 90s vibes. I like how there's a lot of seating and the staff is super friendly! It's so challenging to find a simple soft serve ice cream store with all of these other ice cream stores doing too much and combining crazy flavors. Parking was surprisingly easy to find but it will be easy to get in and out.
google avatar

Chelsea B.

Yelp
I can honestly say this has been the best soft serve I've ever had. I got the cherry dip vanilla cone size small it was so good! My boyfriend grew up on Mister Softee in New York and he says it tasted just like it did back then. I would come here again and again. Highly recommend. Severs were quick and friendly. The interior has a couple of tables and chairs. There's also chairs outside the store.
google avatar

Ellen Z.

Yelp
Mister Softee, where have you been all my life? Officially now one of my favorite soft serve joints. I got the classic cone with chocolate and caramel. We also ordered milkshakes - banana chocolate and Oreo. All delish!
google avatar

George S.

Yelp
When you're craving ice cream, come here for sure! Their soft serve is fantastic! They come in all sorts of toppings and dips. It looks like an old school ice cream shop with the classic black and white checkered floor. The shop is clean and staff is always friendly and helpful. There is plenty of seating inside and a couple benches outside. Parking all around. We had the Banana Split, Cherry dipped cone, Chocolate cookie crunch in a waffle cone, and a Fried Ice cream cone. All were delicious! I loved the tasty crunch topping on the friend ice cream and the Chocolate cookie crunch reminded me of the old school chocolate eclair ice cream bar. You can't go wrong with the classic cherry dipped or the Banana split. I can't recommend this place enough and we'll continue to come back! Happy Nom Nom!
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
The ice cream is very tasty since it isn't too sweet or to bland and they have a wide variety of ice creams to pick from. Another thing is they are very nice and they are very quick and efficient. if you see one of these trucks I highly suggest you to try it
google avatar

Alexandria M.

Yelp
Honestly some of the best I've cream I've ever had, it is simple and delicious, none of that overly fancy stuff, they have a lot of variety of toppings but it all goes back to basic and amazing flavors and tastes.
google avatar

Melvin N.

Yelp
Very rude not sure why this pumpkin patch would have these kind of people here Waiting 45 minutes for some ice cream for my kids that we decided to just get out the line and get on the ride as we try to get ice cream after this girl really push my son out the line and told him that they were closing because they had to leave to another event
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
Brutally honest review this lady is an absolute bitch. She's been to my school twice (Moorpark college) and it has been rude every time. The ice cream is also not my personal favorite, but each their own.
google avatar

Gwendolyn L.

Yelp
I'll keep it simple, this is a great place for soft serve. Mister softee is great, i ordered a chocolate cartwheel. They do come in either vanilla or chocolate. You can then go ahead add strawberry etc to your sandwich. Supply is limited as they get premade. We also tried the swirl ice cream cone, chocolate dipped with sprinkles. Was massive i got the large one. Just a great place to stop by a treat with your family, friends or solo. They do have a sit area inside or you can enjoy outside walking or a near by bench.
google avatar

Shaun T.

Yelp
All you can for from an ice cream spot. Friendly service with outstanding soft serve. The brownies are great too!

Yelp
I love this place for the Dole whips and my kids love the chocolate dipped ice cream cones! If you haven't been by, give it a try. Lots of great options in the staff is very friendly.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream choices ! Great service as well. !! Walked by a few times and kept seeing people coming out with really yummy looking stuff. Finally tried it and immediately fell in love

Yelp
Destroy the New Kiosk! As a NY transplant, I've sung the praises of this business since Jeff bought his first truck and began driving it around Ventura. But this recent move to install a kiosk to order through in the Camarillo store is just awful. What was at once a speedy experience with friendly service from local high school and college kids has suddenly shifted to a soulless interaction that takes 15 minutes of waiting in line just to get to the kiosk, as every parent and grandparent shows options to their child, struggles to swipe and navigate, etc. Meanwhile, the clerk who would have helped you before is off doing other work and fulfilling orders. The business has claimed they've done this for speed while ensuring they won't cut down on employees -- and that latter half is swell. But the kiosk isn't filling the need of the obviously needed 4th employee, since the third employee who was the clerk is clearly busy filling the backlog of orders the kiosk generates. It also just simply doesn't fit with anything else about the business or aesthetic. The root business is an ice cream truck, where speed and oral comprehension and quick conversational banter are king in creating a good experience. And at an aesthetic level, the recent remodel doubles down on the "retro ice cream shop" vibe with new booths to go with the pinball machine, chrome legged furnishings, cocktail arcade machine, etc. And then, off in the corner is this sad gross kiosk that everyone's grubby hands have touched, with a paper sign encouraging its use, as employees dash around behind the counter talking to no one. Get. Rid. Of. This. When the line is out the door and I know I have to wait in line to interact with a screen and wait some more, I'm just walking a block to Rori's Creamery instead. Your competition is literally on your doorstep, Mister Softee -- and all you need to do to get me to them is make the line go out your door and past the doorstep!
google avatar

Marjo G.

Yelp
I'm still thinking about how good these sprinkles were.. the soft serve texture is perfect! There isn't much to say other than I'm so happy that I can catch Mister Softee at a brick and mortar so that I don't have to chase the ice cream truck because this is gonna be a regular stop for me lol.
google avatar

Angie R.

Yelp
Mister Softee was so yummy! I just got a vanilla soft serve on a waffle cone but it hit the spot. The kids working were nice and very quick. The area is beautiful! I really want to go back again to get something like the brownie sundae!!
google avatar

marissa l.

Yelp
One of my favorite ice cream spots ! I usually come here for their soft serve but since I'm on a diet involves non dairy, I chose their watermelon flavored ice . It's pretty good ! So glad my friend pointed it out to me they had this option ! I wasn't sure which flavor to choose at first but they were all friendly enough to help guide me through my options of mango, cherry , blueberry, watermelon or rainbow. It's usually kept pretty clean on here when I come in too, love it here!
google avatar

Peaches H.

Yelp
We are from Northern California and have a Mister Softee truck where we live but we were so excited to find a brick and mortar! It's the same too! We got two cones to go complete with drip guards, cups and spoons to prevent any mess. The team was great and friendly and we look forward to coming back should we ever be near. The parking was ample and plenty of indoor seating. It's an old school ice cream parlor with a modern feel! Thanks Mister Softee!
google avatar

Marcos R.

Yelp
Very original and good soft serve for any occasion and with anyone who loves ice cream from their childhood days. The small old style shop takes you back to when your parents where born and puts you in a blast from the past. I ordered the cherry dip cone which was nothing too special but sure did hit your satisfaction spot. The girlfriend got a good one as well but I can't remember the name. Would I come back? Yes I would be back to try more more or their signature flavors.
google avatar

Antonio C.

Yelp
This place is fun. Has a classic ice cream parlor vibe for sure. The ice cream is good and they have a lot of options to choose from. They'll have something for everyone. Anyone that visits will enjoy their visit. I'll be back if I'm in the area. 5.0 stars for this spot. Nothing bad to say.
google avatar

Larissa M.

Yelp
Ice Cream, Ice Cream, it's the best! Especially when it's soft serve. I was at Underwood Family Farms for a birthday and was so pleased to see their ice cream truck. My toddler loves ice cream so we had to get one. They have vanilla, chocolate, and swirl which you can get with sprinkles or dipped with cherry and chocolate. I got a swirl cone dipper with chocolate and some of our friends got vanilla with sprinkles. The ice cream truck prices range from $4-$6 depending on what size you get. The service wasn't fantastic, but they are probably in a hurry trying to get through everyone as the line can get long at times. They have three different ice cream trucks currently and you can check out their social media pages to see where they are at. Definitely worth trying out!
google avatar

Sylvia K.

Yelp
This place is adorable. There's a few restaurants that you can walk to nearby. So happy with my soft, serve chocolate dip, and my husband liked his chocolate milkshake. What a way to improve a tiring day.

Yelp
Amazing Ice cream very rich and smooth absolutely delicious I remember during the summer I had the Deadpool cone and it was amazing!
