If you're here on O'ahu, you'd be remiss if you didn't explore the incredible sushi and seafood scene. And as far as top quality goes, Mitch's has earned its place among the very best; for 2 decades and counting, they've garnered a reputation for serving some of the freshest fish around. My parents have a deep love for sushi, and really just seafood in general, so I could think of no better place to bring them for a nice dinner.
We felt like ordering the whole menu, which is expansive and offers a good number of both raw and grilled preparations. We did try to show some restraint and went with a few of our favorites:
- Toro (bluefin tuna belly): We ordered this both raw and aburi (torched). As is characteristic of toro, this was well-marbled with a clean, rich flavor. Out of all the items we had, I thought this one most clearly and definitively showcased the quality of fish here; it certainly supported Mitch's' reputation as a purveyor of some of the freshest seafood on the island.
- Misoyaki salmon: I'd been particularly interested in this one since Mitch's uses Ora King Salmon for it. Ora King is a variety of salmon carefully raised in New Zealand that is genetically distinct from all other salmon in the world. The most striking feature is the intense level of marbling, which has to do with both genetics and feed; it's the equivalent of wagyu, but for salmon instead of beef. The fillet was beautifully cooked, and really showcased the trademark unctuousness of Ora King. However, I did wish the miso flavor was bolder and more intense; that would have made it a home run.
- Salmon belly: once again a fatty melt-in-your-mouth experience as expected with Ora King Salmon. The skin was nice and crispy. Perhaps this could have been salted a little harder to augment/embolden the flavor of the salmon itself, but enjoyable nonetheless.
- Seafood Van Van: probably the best part of the meal. Not to be confused with the Lobster Van Van, it's salmon, shrimp, avocado, and white fish enveloped in a mayo-based sauce that's broiled to finish. Creamy and indulgent, with just the right amount of brininess against the smooth flavor and texture of the avocado at the base.
- Grilled sardine: We probably could have gone without this one, if I'm being honest. As a sardine enthusiast, it wasn't the most flavorful one I've ever had, and the dark meat was especially bitter.
Beyond the food, the vibe is pretty relaxed here; this is a great place to enjoy good food without worrying about being too prim and proper. Service is pleasant and informative as well.
Overall picture: The quality and freshness of the fish here certainly lives up to the reputation. It's tough to beat top-notch seafood in a setting where you can feel comfortable letting your hair down a bit, so to speak. Worth your visit for sure!
