Miyagawacho Hotta

"The look and feel of Old Kyoto permeates Miyagawacho. The owner-chef, who refined his skills in Gion, is also a qualified sommelier and holds a sake diploma, so he is an expert at pairings. While the set meal respects the basics of Japanese cuisine, the owner-chef adds playful details such as Worcestershire sauce in beef cutlet sandwiches. Shaved ice is served in summer; cocktails made from fruit benefit from the owner-chef’s bartending experience." - Michelin Inspector

Went for the spring dances 2019 (which you cannot photograph, but were wonderful). The theatre itself is beautiful. I highly recommend upgrading to the tea ceremony ticket. Not only is it a nice experience, but you will get the plate which had your wagashi on to keep as a souvenir!

Great show. Couldn't buy tickets online, our hotel helps us. But we can't select the seat, only class. Got ticket with tea ceremony.

The spring dance performances given here are really top-notch and well worth the ticket price. It's incredible to see these highly-skilled women displaying their talent and years of hard work. My only complaint is that the second level of seating is poorly designed: anyone sitting on the left or right stage will have a good portion of it blocked due to the angle of the balcony and the (low) rise of the seat rows.

Went to the Kyō Odori spring dances here. We bought tickets directly from the ticket office onsite and paid extra to include the tea ceremony. The Geiko and Maiko dances were truly amazing and I was so pleased to be able to see them. We paid for second class tickets and had a great view, but I think side view ones would be better so you could see the singers better. There were spaces available, which is unbelievable given how talented the Geiko and Maiko are. Go if you get the chance!

I love their Miyako-Odori dance show in Spring and Beer Garden festival of this Miyagawa-cho. Both are affordable and performance is brilliant. Maybe seats of the theatre is a bit small for western people and some of friends are concerned about inviting friends from their country.

Here is the best spot to see real Geiko and Maiko ! If you want to take their pictures, please don't disturb them and it's very important to keep in mind that the Maiko or Geiko you see in the geisha districts are usually on their way to appointment and they can not stop.

One of the most beautiful places to walk around Kyoto. I really miss this city and if you get a chance to see this area I highly recommend it. I enjoy walking by this area at night.

Miyagawa-chō is one of the hanamachi or geisha districts in Kyoto. Miya-gawa means "Shrine River", referring to the nickname of the Kamo River just south of Shijō. During the Gion Festival the mikoshi of Yasaka Shrine used to be purified here in the waters of the river. Chō means "town", "block", "neighborhood".
