NYC Cambodian Restaurant Hop Previews Menu With Pop-Up in Brooklyn | Eater NY

"Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto is unveiling a new restaurant in Montclair, New Jersey, opening Thursday, July 31 at 193 Glenridge Avenue. The menu will feature the chef’s signature Japanese cuisine with Western approaches — think sushi, steaks, tuna pizza, and more — plus a full bar with sake. The 12,799-square-foot space seats 200-plus diners and includes an omakase bar and dining room; takeout sushi boxes will be available at a later date. Reservations can be booked online. This marks the notable chef’s return to a full-on Japanese restaurant and is part of his partnership with the Montclair Hospitality Group; a second location is slated to open in New York City later this year." - Nadia Chaudhury

Wow an unforgettable dining experience! The food was delicious & the cocktails were good (being a dirty martini drinker… I have to say I’ve had better but it wasn’t terrible). We ordered a bit of everything and not one dish disappointed. The sticky ribs and the porterhouse were my two favorites. The spicy tuna roll was the best I’ve ever had. Kyle our waiter was amazing. He was professional, polite and very attentive. Simple things like cleaning off a table & getting clean utensils between courses seem to have disappeared from high end dining but not here. There wasn’t a crumb left on our table. The atmosphere is cool and trendy, the music was awesome and very much fitting for crowd. Loved it! Can’t wait to go back and eat even more things.

Google
Outstanding restaurant from start to finish. Many new restaurants start of slow with quality service during the first week, by MM by Morimoto started off amazing and is not looking back. Services and bartenders are locked in and provided amazing service. The menu consists of some amazing Japanese and steakhouse classics. A ton of options and variety of ways to have some surf and turf combos! The drinks are amazing too from wine, to cocktails to a sake flight. The food the food the food! Outstanding and worth several visits to try as many items as possible!

Really inspired cuisine that was exceptional at every dish. Fun vibe layout, even for a Thursday night. They are definitely still working through the details of how to operate though we were 45 minutes late to be sat for our reserve table and they only thought to pay attention to us when I complained as one of the members of our party was pregnant. We felt like an afterthought the whole night and needed to deliberately find a server to put orders in to get water. They didn’t even bring us a steak knife. There’s definitely potential to get this up to five stars, but they really need to focus on operations .

Truly an amazing dining experience. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the service was top notch. Everything from the cocktails, to the appetizers like tuna pizza, to the entrees was spot on. The sushi was very fresh and the steak melted in my mouth.

MM by Morimoto exceeded our expectations in every aspect. The culinary experience was outstanding, with attentive servers and a beautiful atmosphere. We were seated in a lovely, extremely comfortable booth in the central area. Chef Morimoto made a point to visit each table, taking the time to chat with guests and take photographs. This personal touch is noteworthy, as it highlights his dedication to ensuring an exceptional dining experience for every patron. A warm welcome to Montclair, Chef Morimoto. We anticipate enjoying many meals at your restaurant.

We had a small mishap with the service, but the manager was kind enough to compliment our meal with dessert (apple pie, mousse and sorbet/ice cream). Overall, I recommend sticking to the mains and sushi with a select few of the appetizers. Would definitely come back to try some more of the drinks.

We had a reservation for 9:15 had to wait til 9:45 to be seated. We were sat at a dirty table. My father ordered a grey goose dirty martini and got Tito’s, I complained and they still charged us $36 for 2 drinks. Pork gyoza was 4 small dumplings but good. “A5 wagyu carpaccio” is 2 roast beef cold cuts with soy sauce poured over it with arugula for decoration. Calamari salad is fried calamari with salad dumped on top and it made the calamari cold. The sushi was “slightly better than shop rite” according to my father. And the 32 oz porterhouse was a 1/2 inch thick t bone steak that could not have been remotely close to 2 lbs. Our waitress was very nice but everything else was sub par and overpriced. Waited a half hour for dessert canceled the order got the check and left. $380 for 2 people. No one at the valet stand spoke English. Impressed by atmosphere but not worth the money at all.

Google
I was disappointed by the quality of the food. Everything we ordered was so so at best. Appetizers were better than main dishes, sushi was so big, side dish of broccoli was so uncooked. Nothing Japanese with any of the dishes. Music is too loud it’s hard to carry conversation. I don’t think I will be returning here.

Yelp
Went here on a Tuesday night with friends and we had a lovely time. The decor was really nice and it wasn't to loud (yet) so that we could hear one another. The waitstaff was really attentive and we ordered drinks. We got the Green Heat which was very tasty. For appetizer I had the corn tempura which was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! For dinner I had the Tofu Croquette which was different but very tasty. I would recommend this place for a lovely date night or special occasion.

Yelp
I loved everything about it here. The food was delicious, service was great (except I wish the wait staff didn't wear perfume or scented lotion because it is hard to enjoy a meal when the strong floral scent lingers while you're trying to eat). The ambiance is fun and modern. It makes for a great date spot. I enjoyed all the food, especially the tempura corn and the steak. The tiramisu was just eh for me. I think I'll pass on that next time. Parking is convenient. They have valet and there is a parking deck right across the street if you don't like valet.

Yelp
This is a new Morimoto restaurant located in New Jersey. My husband, friend and I went here on a wednesday night and the restaurant was full of people, music and vibes. We went there a little earlier than our scheduled time and told them instead of a party of 4, we only had a party of 3. They were fine with it and got us seated within 10 minutes. The table was large for 3 people with lots of room for food and drinks. :) After we were seated, a waiter came by and introduced himself as Kyle who would be taking care of us that night. He was soft spoken but loud enough despite the music and people surrounding us. He gave us ample time to review the menu, order drinks and gave us recommendations on the menu as well. When we ordered, we were also able to order the popcorn shrimp with sauce on the side (my friend can't really handle spice so by dipping, it would be more palatable for her) so that was great :) We also had a calamari salad, sashimi, california roll, eel avocado roll, wagyu bap, and skirt steak. It arrived promptly and we shared everything on the table. My favorite is the bap but everything was amazing as usual (I used to go to Morimoto NYC when it was opened). After our filling meal, we had the tiramisu, chocolate cake and apple pie. Despite not being a fan of apple pie, the crust on this pie was delightful! Absolutely adored it. My friend also really enjoyed the tiramisu despite not being a huge tiramisu fan. Our favorite though was definitely the chocolate cake. All the desserts weren't overly sweet which made it amazing! They are a bit on the pricier end but if you have an event to celebrate or just want a yummy dinner date, I would recommend here!

Yelp
Went to MM by Morimoto for a date night and had an unreal experience. The space is super beautiful and has dazzling lights and screens showcasing Morimoto and the delicious food. The service we received was impeccable and the staff were all super friendly and welcoming to not only my wife and I but our 7 month old. The food was absolutely unreal. I got the aburi sushi appetizer which they bring to the table and torch (it was very Instagram worthy with the razzle dazzle) and it was some of the best sushi I've ever had. I got the 20 oz bone in ribeye and that was super flavorful and came piping hot to our table. My wife got the Ishiyaki A5 bap which was also cooked table side and tasted delicious. This place brings all the upscale vibes and delicious food of a fancy NY restaurant but right in Montclair. Cannot recommend enough 10/10!

Yelp
3.5! Overall, this was a super fun meal that I enjoyed but not too sure if I'd be rushing to come back as a result of the combination of price, food, and service. There were 3 of us in the party and we ordered Emperor cut of the prime rib, braised black cod, creamed spinach, steamed rice, corn tempura, sticky ribs, french onion soup, and a spicy salmon roll. Portion-wise, this seemed like a good amount for us. We did not get any drinks. I wanted the Miso Honey Paloma and that was the only drink out that day. Nothing else was really catching my eye. Starting with our favorites, the corn tempura and sticky ribs were AMAZING. We originally were not going to order the corn tempura but after seeing a picture on Yelp, we had to get it. The tempura wasn't oily and was crisp. I preferred the gochujang aioli while the others in my party preferred the wasabi mayo so it was perfect for people with different tastes. The sticky ribs were crispy to perfection with a nice sweet sauce and meat that slid right off the bone. These two are a must! Next came out the french onion soup and the spicy salmon roll. The soup was great but honestly just tasted like a french onion soup. I was expecting more of an asian-food taste with the miso soup but it was still tasty. The spicy salmon roll was also very good but a classic so it didn't stand out to us. Our last course was the prime rib (medium rare), braised black cod, creamed spinach, and steamed rice. One member of our party ordered it medium rare and it was NOT to my liking. Maybe that was his preference but I really only ate the outside of the cut of the meat, however, this isn't the fault of the restaurant but of how we ordered. The emperor cut was definitely a good enough portion for us. The cod was tasty but a little fishy so probably would not order it again. The creamed spinach, we all agreed, could've used more salt. It did not have much flavor. I did love the steamed rice! Great classic. Our waitress was the sweetest! Overall service though, was slow. Our meal took way too long. Not sure if they're just understaffed because they just opened but they definitely need more servers. The interior was spectacular. It had such a vibe and added to the setting of the meal. For such a steep price, I'd be expecting top service and menu items. Still a very enjoyable meal.

Yelp
We got there early to try to see if we could get seated earlier but it was understandably packed, so we just went to the bar and ordered drinks. We ordered fairly quickly but then it about 20 minutes to get our drinks, and the bar wasn't even that busy. There was a lady customer who came to the bar after us and she got seated before us, which was annoying bc it looked like she was also a party of just two. 15 minutes after our reservation time passed, we asked the host about our table and they're like "oh, we can seat you right away." So I was slightly confused because I wonder how come none of the hosts didn't come get us at the bar or to let us know "your table will be ready in 5 minutes"? We even told the host we'd be at the bar, and they confirmed my name with me. Then they apologized for the wait and seated us. We ordered an appetizer and 3 main dishes. Somehow we got one of the main dishes (ishiyaki A5 bap) before the appetizer, which was odd. So we finished the rice bowl before the appetizer (which was sushi) got to our table - and the rice bowl was on the salty side. We were also hoping to eat part of the rice bowl with our steaks, but since the timing was off, we ordered two extra bowls of rice. We ordered prime rib and A5 wagyu - both medium rare. The lady who brought the food to us said "here is some steak sauce in case you want some on your steak" and POURED THE SAUCE ON OUR PRIME RIB. My mouth dropped bc you just are not supposed to do that, especially in what is supposed to be a high end steakhouse. Good steaks shouldn't need anything! And we didn't even try it without the sauce. And then the wagyu came on a cast iron plates, and she said "you can cook the steaks more if you want" and flipped some steak pieces to the side and cooked our steak more, making some pieces more medium than medium rare. The bright sides of the night are that wagyu was really good though, you can tell it's quality meat; and the sushi was also very good. For the amount that we paid tonight, I do not think it was worth the experience of eating here. Maybe I am getting too old, but I also didn't enjoy the vibe of the restaurant because it was so loud in the restaurant and I felt as if I were yelling at my date just to have a conversation.

Yelp
We came to celebrate a family member's birthday for dinner on Labor day! We made a reservation for 5 and were seated pretty promptly. Walking in felt a mix of a New York and Las Vegas strip restaurant -- it's lively and there's a classy bar up front that serves amazing drinks. We ordered bonsai bloom and sake verra matcha. The appetizers for me were hit or miss. We ordered corn tempura, tuna pizza, the skewers, and sticky ribs. The ribs which were crisp, sweet-tangy, and fell right off the bone. I would also go for the corn tempura which came in both a tasty gochujang glaze and slightly spicy wasabi aioli. The other appetizers could have been skipped. Highly recommend the sushi and steak dishes; after all the restaurant is an asian-fusion steakhouse. We also ordered the sushi platter, soft shell crab roll, Morimoto cut prime rib, A5 bap, and black cod. The A5 is melt-in-your mouth and the prime rib was super tasty with a rather light refreshing horseradish side and tangy A1 sauce. We had a small mishap with the service, but the manager was kind enough to compliment our meal with dessert (apple pie, mousse and sorbet/ice cream). Overall, I recommend sticking to the mains and sushi with a select few of the appetizers. Would definitely come back to try some more of the drinks.

Yelp
Top notch addition to the Montclair dining scene. We arrived and were promptly seated at our table at the reserved time. Drink menu has plenty of interesting options and I went with their take on the Old Fashioned which was amazing. For appetizers we split the ribs, A5 carpaccio and Morimoto's signature sushi pizza. All were fantastic and we were really blown away by the ribs which were crispy and fall off the bone tender. For my entree I had the chef's sushi/sashimi combination which was well curated with some of your standard items interspersed with some imported cuts from Japan. Off course it was super fresh and delicious. I sampled some of the porterhouse that was ordered and it was on the same level as the best NY steak houses like Keen's and Luger's. Service was very engaging and attentive. Prices, for the quality and ambiance, were worth it.

Yelp
I was very excited when I heard the news that acclaimed Iron Chef Morimoto was opening a restaurant in Montclair. It's a new concept from the Montclair restaurant group that blends the classic American chophouse with a Japanese flair and is well worth visiting for a date night. We arrived earlier than our reservation so we enjoyed a drink at the bar while waiting for our table to be ready. The bar is a decent size with probably about 20 seats. There's also some lounge style seating in the bar area - not sure if those are reserved or first come, first serve. The bar has a big black and gold display hanging above it - it reminded me of the little plastic streamers that you'd find on pom poms. Different but the dark colors fit the mood. The drinks were good but unlike what you'd find everywhere else. They were very specific with some ingredients that admittedly I wasn't sure what they were. The Bonsai Bloom was my drink of choice this evening! It was yuzu gin with a cucumber foam and very tasty. By time our dinner was over, I was considering having another but our waiter told me they had sold out for the evening. The Bonsai bloom has a cucumber foam that they make each morning in batches and once it's gone the drink is off the menu for the day - gotta love that daily preparation and freshness! Also tried the Tokyo Smoke which included a Japanese whiskey and was delicious as well. For food, we didn't go nuts. My eyes were definitely larger than my stomach but it was only 2 of us. We had the steak tartare and aburi sushi app to start - both were SO good. The steak tartare was great with the crostini and also just eating by itself with a fork. The sushi app had 4 decent sized rolls and was torched at our table (there's lots of presentations for many of the meals!). For dinner we split the 10oz Australian Coulotte waygu with a side of cheesy potatoes. The steak was phenomenal. I love a wagyu steak but not always willing to pay for it but when I'm Rome...The steak was cooked to our preferred temp and served on a hot plate so that if we had wanted to sear it some more, we could. It also came with the Morimoto house sauce. I'm not usually one to want sauce with a steak but I ate the steak both with and without and enjoyed it both ways. I could do without the cheesy potatoes - they were just okay and a not needed side for the showstopping steak. Didn't get dessert since the dessert menu was just your basics - ended with an espresso martini instead. Next time if we go with a group, I'll definitely be trying more from the menu. Right near Bloomfield Ave, it's located off Glenridge Ave. Valet is available for $10 or you can try to find street parking. Parking is also available in the garage right across the street so you have many options! Reservations are hard to come b but the food really speaks for itself - make a reservation now so you can enjoy it next month!

Yelp
New morimoto restaurant! Easy to sit down once there at 5:30pm. By 8pm the place is slammed with lines. Parking is easy across the street at $2 an hour if you get a spot. Otherwise $20 valet. Venue is beautiful with a private room for 8. Comfortable seating and clean bathrooms. Drinks and cocktails were strong and tasty. They used the large ice cube which melted a lot slower! Appetizers were great. Loved the cauliflower, especially the wasabi. Hamachi was very fresh also. The pancake was different since it the bottom was a tortilla chip-- wasnt my vibe as much but still good. The apps were ridiculously fast and came out within 3 minutes. Then there was a gap between the appetizers and entrees of 30+ minutes. However, our server and the manager William were very attentive and aware of this. They addressed it proactively and were extremely professional. Well done. The cod was a must. The sushi place were massive sushi slices for a very reasonable price. The eel Unagi could have used some more sauce but very satisfying. We ended with the Tiramisu which was unique and one of the best I've tried. Overall, very satisfied. Slight hiccups but the staff are on point and the food was delicious.

Yelp
I don't know where to start! Valet offered exactly in front of door for $20, but a parking deck literally dead across the street. We didn't scope pricing difference, but clearly 2 options available with no far walking necessary. Opted with valet. Sat at bar for 15 mins since we arrived early, but we were finally given our drinks right when table was ready for 6:15 reservation. Sat in front section with comfy couch like seats in corner so hubby and I were able to snuggle up next to each other and not feel crowded around other diners. We started with the surf n turf (Wagyu and shrimp tempura roll) and enjoyed as they cooked the meat table-side with a torch. Fun to watch and excellent to eat! We also ordered the kushiage app, but it's literally enough for one person. Enjoyed, but I wouldn't recommend it as a shareable app. I still don't understand which meat was meant for the egg tartar sauce. It seemed like it belonged with a fried seafood piece not the chicken thigh, pork belly, or beef meatball like mix sticks it was served with. I enjoyed eating it on its own tho. Now we waited for half hour for dinner entrees. For dinner we shared a med-rare rib eye with a bowl of rice and charred broccoli. We were told if we wanted black truffle added, Chef Morimoto would come out and add for you, but we just don't like truffles. However Chef surprised us and came out to each table and welcomed us! He even helped serve our food! Mind blown! Loved his homemade steak sauce which was reminiscent of ginger, soy, sesame and teriyaki. Devine! Everyone gets to take home their mini bottle! For dessert we went with Tiramisu. Now dessert options were odd. They seemed like an after thought of what to offer that had no cohesion to the menu. It was that, apple pie, chocolate cake or ice cream. I was expecting tempura fried ice cream or a variation on numerous Japanese desserts. The tiramisu was very good with chocolate shavings on plate, few blueberries, one raspberry and a quarter piece of a strawberry. It is served again table side where waiter comes out and scoops it onto your plate. It was not heavily soaked in espresso like traditional Italian, but the lightness of it was a nice complement to the ribeye. Drinks were excellent as well, but the first I chose, Bonsai Bloom, repeated on me throughout whole meal and after. I wouldn't recommend the second which was the Sakura Highball, unless u like floral drinks. Btw most red wines are Cabernet. Not one Merlot. Our waitress was as sweet as pie, but she hovered over us way too much. Repeatedly came to the table saying "hopefully you come back and ...." Then would hover over us where we are trying to eat and she is just literally standing at our table staring at us. It honestly started to become uncomfortable. Without exaggeration I think she came to our table at least 15 times. Do you want more drinks? 4 times. Hopefully you come back 3 times. Next time I would order this ....2 times. Do you want more water ...3 times meanwhile there is a bottle on the table. Last we get check, within a minute waitress was back hovering again as we are checking it and pulling out our card. Once we handed card over and signed she disappeared into thin air. Where was the same energy throughout whole meal? Not even thank you so much for the extra tip or can't wait to see you guys again. It was just weird. By 8pm place was packed and they have a gigantic bar that everyone seemed to go to and eat at. We truly enjoyed ourselves, but there are some kinks to be worked out. Granted they only opened 10 days ago, but hopefully this business is claimed, they read the reviews and take note. Certainly would come back, but they need some more time. Menu also needs to be reworked for cohesion. Dessert options definitely made no sense at all.

Yelp
Check-in process: Not sure if they need to get their reservations spaced out differently but they need to remove the 15min max wait for reservations, as it is unfair for you to have to wait over 15mins for a table when you have arrived within the alloted time. No seating area for people that are waiting. Bar Menu: Toro Tartare, 4.3. Delicious and fresh. Good selection of side sauces, too much Dashi soy in my opinion. Scallop nigiri, 4.0. Fresh, buttery, but way too much rice. Uni: 4.7, hokkaido uni, very tasty, buttery, and fresh. Again a tad bit too much rice. Spicy yellowtail roll: 4.8. Tasty, fresh, buttery, good ratio fish to rice. Popcorn Shrimp: 5.0. Two ways, Wasabi aioli, is literally like if you bit into a fresh warm buttery popcorn and a crispy Wasabi shrimp, add some lemon and the flavors just open up even more. Second flavor is the gochujang aioli, has a buttery sweet umami flavor to it, add lemon and it's out of this world, dare I say, cheddar cheesey?! Negitori Maki roll: 4.8. Delicious, great ratio of Toro to rice. Drinks: Tokyo Smoke, 5.0, great smoky oak flavor, egg whites makes it a creamy and light drink! Coedo Marihana Session IPA, solid 5.0. Hoppy but still a session! Coedo Shikkoku, solid 5.0. Tasty, smoky, light, black lager. Pairs well with the popcorn shrimp! Front service: 3.0. Dressed the part, but was very basic. No explanation of what the check-in process entailed, no update on table status during wait time, overall not very customer driven. For context, close to 5 parties ahead of us waiting to be seated, one party of 4+ seemed very annoyed at the waiting time and visible seating available so much that they had to ask what the update is as opposed to proactive communication that we also expected from the front host... Bar Service: 5.0. Exceptional, genuine , good knowledge of menu items and drinks, seemed very experienced and handled the bar well. While I know this is also a steakhouse, my interest was more so on the quality of fish. Steakhouse are everywhere in Jersey and to be frank, many can make a good steak but few can provide quality fresh fish at a good price. I will return hoping to try dishes on the tableside menu.

Yelp
Expectations were so high. Having been to other Morimoto properties we were expecting the same top notch experience. That's not what we got. Lively and nicely appointed venue in Montclair. Service was a little clunky but expected for a newly opened restaurant. Cocktails were ok not great and the flavors a bit off, salted foam on a Morimoto Negroni was a miss. Place is loud and it's hard to hear anyone. Again not a dealbreaker. Here's the dealbreaker the sushi/ sashimi was not high quality for the price and brand. Plenty of other choices in the region for better fish. We got the Wagyu fried rice and black cod for dinner and again mediocre to below standards. Skipped dessert. The bill was astronomical as expected but the meal didn't come close to hitting the spot. Maybe it's growing pains but wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best meals my husband and I have ever had!! The whole experience was perfect from start to end. We booked reservations online and were seated right on time. The vibe was trendy and upscale. Staff and service was very friendly and food came out promptly. We ordered kushiage and sushi as apps, ishiyaki A5 bap, NY Strip, side of rice, and tiramisu. Literally everything was amazing! The meat came out sizzling on their platters and was juicy and tender. The ishiyaki bap flavors were extremely tasty and flavorful. The best part was when chef Morimoto came by to say hello to all the tables. We can't wait to come back!!

Yelp
If I could give this restaurant another star I would! The service was absolutely phenomenal, we had the pleasure of having Fernando for the night. He was extremely attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. He gave us the best recommendation, which was everything here is delicious lol. The restaurant is gorgeous, we didn't get to sit in the main dining area but the down stairs was okay. Would recommend staying in the main dining area next time. To the more important part of this review the food! We had the surf and turf sushi roll, California roll, skirt steak, NY Strip, potatoes and broccoli. The steak was cooked to the perfection, the rolls were absolutely delicious. The only downside to me was the broccoli. I would have preferred mine to be a little softer to eat. Outside of just preference of broccoli, this restaurant is definitely a must try. Be prepared to spend a car payment but it's definitely worth trying!!!!!!

Yelp
I have been to three different Morimoto restaurants and always had a great dinner. I was thrilled Morimoto was coming to Montclair. But, this is clearly just a branding of a restaurant. The food was substandard. The nigiri and rolls were below par. My local corner sushi restaurant served better sushi. As far as the entrees, the blackened cod was ok and their version of kop dol bim bim bop was outrageously priced with a topping of flavorless wagyu. Dinner for 2 with two drinks each with tip was over $400. Save your money. This place does not last a year.

Yelp
After an amazing experience at Momosan Waikiki and Morimoto Asia Waikiki 4 years ago, I knew I had to check out this new spot. The vibes are amazing. The service was top notch. And the food was amazing. For appetizers, we started with a tuna pizza which came on a crispy tortilla and the textures just went together and then also the tuna tartare which came with different toppings including sour cream, wasabi, and avocado sauce. I could never forget Morimoto Junmai Ginjo sake which was a great accompaniment to the food. For my main, I had to go back to the Ishiyaki Buri bap that I had in Waikiki cause it's just that good. And then the tiramisu which everyone needs to get because it comes tableside served from a huge Pyrex which had to be one of the best tiramisu, I've had to date. We even got to meet Iron Chef Morimoto and have a lovely conversation with him which was crazy cause I grew up watching Iron Chef America. Definitely check this place out, it's definitely the new IT place in Montclair.

Yelp
We sat at the bar. From others experience as well the bar service is still catching up. I hear the table service is impeccable. Excellent sparkling sake and great mixed drinks. The morimoto sushi platter had an excellent yuzu sauce on it my favorite cut was the tuna least favorite was the salmon but that's personal preference 3rd fish was yellowtail. Sticky short ribs were excellent . Order comes with 2. One of ours had very little meat but the other had a good amount. Surf and turf tacos with excellent a5 beef. Again personal preference I'd probably preferred the meat light seared rather than torched but the presentation is excellent and quality of the food top notch. Great Saturday night vibes with dj playing great tunes . Bar menu for food available which isn't the full menu which is very appropriate . Can't beat when morimoto himself is there and comes to great all the tables !

Yelp
What an amazing dinner experience. We came to celebrate our son going to college with a beautiful meal. The atmosphere for a restaurant in Montclair made us feel we were in NYC, without having to travel far. We started with the Tuna pizza and the Popcorn shrimp. Both delicious. For our dinner we ordered the Marinated Skirt Steak with Mushroom sauce, Ishiyaki Buri Bap and A5 Baps. Over the top with flavor. We had sides of the potatoes and the Roasted Broccoli. Yummy. And ended the night with a Chocolate cake. We sat near the kitchen where Morimoto himself was working. Service was great. What a great night. I highly recommend.

Yelp
The wait staff was excellent at fixing things. But I am over 55 and I've sent back a drink 1 time, and I've sent back a steak 1 time , and both were at MM tonight. Once things were right they were great. Whole place might be all set in a few weeks.

Yelp
I typically don't bother to write these reviews but the visit to this restaurant really deserved a contribution. There was a lot of hype involved with MM by Morimoto coming to Montclair NJ but candidly it was UNDESERVED! The night started with being seated in a back corner of the restaurant with the servers having to get plates and utensils right behind us then Jessica who seated us showed a very rudimentary understanding of the menu and she was the one who asked if we had any questions about it. We ordered drinks after learning they were out of ingredients for the Sakura Highball. Will the GM came over and plopped the drinks down on the table barely saying a word. They were also out of the Kushiage appetizer. Then the highlight of the evening was my wife finding a paper barcode at the bottom of her calamari salad (pic attached). We informed our waitress Emily (who was great by the way) and she reacted immediately and we were not charged for the salad. Then the same GM Will came over and tried to insincerely apologize and say that he will be in close contact with us throughout the night to make up for the unsanitary mishap with my wife's salad, we never saw him again BTW! He seems to be good at delivering empty rhetoric. I will say that the food was quite good even though one of the servers was visibly annoyed when I asked to be able to see the table side preparation of the Ishiaki Buri Bop I ordered. If you are going to advertise table side prep then at least make it visible. There are too many other great restaurants in Montclair that offer much more value for your $$$! Needless to say, DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!

Yelp
Most incredible meal I've had in years. From the cocktails to the execution of every dish, perfection. Wait staff was incredible. Bar is a little slow to get a drink but once you're at the table it's white glove experience. We got the steak tartar which was to die for. Best I've ever had. Tuna sushi, unbelievably fresh with homemade soy sauce. Sticky shrimp, incredible and packed with flavor. And then topped it off with the Ribeye... unforgettably flawless with dimension and flavor. The green Heat drink is amazing! We will be back to try more!

Yelp
Decor and overall vibe was excellent. We ordered the steak tartare and it was one of the best we have had, and the morimoto sashimi. Then we ordered the surf and turf roll, the negitoro maki, and the negihamachi maki. All were fresh and tasted great.

Yelp
The restaurant is absolutely stunning. This location has changed hands over the years, and while the layout, including the central bar area has remained the same, the decor has been overhauled. They've put up what I can best describe as nouveau privacy partitions to give the illusion of a much smaller restaurant, though it is a large space cleverly divided. The bar is vibrant. Gone are the TVs/sports bar feel. It is a large area, though much more intimate and trendy. In fact in our area of seating there were two large LCD displays that kept playing some type of clip of Morimoto on a loop, and that was possibly the only thing about the decor that I found odd and just off. There is another large LCD display in the back of the restaurant that had an ever changing ambient display that seemed to add to the overall theme of the restaurant itself. Multiple comments about our service. Our server was on point with recommendations and communication with the kitchen. We explained the gluten-free accommodations needed by one of us, and he could not have done a better job with communicating to us what was safe to order and demanding that the kitchen staff do their very best to adjust to our needs. On that respect, the service was outstanding. We did have to wait about 15 minutes past our reservation time to be seated. Not terrible, but with no seating area, I can see that being a bit of a struggle for some. The pacing and waiting was a bit slow. We had a 6:30 reservation and were not out of there until close to 9. We ordered a combination of sushi and the braised cod as entrees. The cod did not arrive until 5-10 minutes after the sushi. As for the food itself, extraordinary. We went with the calamari salad and toro tartar. The calamari was delicate and the salad perfectly dressed. I loved how the radishes seemed to be shaved with a razor blade and served perfectly thin. The tuna was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Delicious, fresh as could be sushi. Spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, both pretty pedestrian choices, were simply spot-on. The lobster temaki rivalled the finest lobster rolls I've ever sampled. As much as I enjoyed the sushi, the star was the braised cod. It simply melted on my tongue. What a treat. Undercover star was the roasted broccoli. The aioli and garlic, along with the crunch. A huge serving, we wound up taking some home with us. The only thing missing that would have been helpful was a knife. As we did not go with steaks, we did not have a steak knife. The broccoli is served as the whole crown, and cutting it into servable pieces proved more challenging than necessary. I observed adjacent tables ordering steaks, and while I did not get to try one, the scent was intoxicating, and they were cooked to absolute perfection. Tables are a little tight, and we could easily here the conversations of adjacent tables, despite, not really wanting to, as you couldn't help but overhear. The overall vibe is that of a trendy NYC club, complete with DJ. I did not find the music to be too loud as some had mentioned in other reviews. However, they are definitely going for a trendy atmosphere. As for dress, while I did see a few patrons in caps, shorts, sweat jackets, etc, those people seemed to be inappropriately underdressed in relation to the majority. Smart casual. Jeans or khakis with collared shirts for most men, with dresses or jeans and stylish tops for the ladies. There is a parking garage directly across the street, as well as street parking, and there is available valet parking right in front. Some service issues that I expect to be worked out as they find their footing. Our bill was quite reasonable, but you'll pay steakhouse prices should you go in that direction, or higher if you go in the Wagyu direction. We skipped out on dessert, as by that point, I simply needed to leave, having felt like I was there too long.

Yelp
Tremendous experience with food that exceeded expectations. Everything was cooked (or not) to perfection and the cocktails were light, refreshing, and flavorful. Morimoto visited every table to talk about the restaurant. "I wanted a chop house, but nobody would come to my restaurant if it didn't have sushi." I'm not so sure about that. We basically followed our waiter's suggestions, and couldn't be happier. The sticky ribs were fall-off-the-bone and outstanding. The surf 'n' turn roll -- shrimp Tempora wrapped in torched A5 wagyu -- was amazing. The Ishiyaki A5 Bop was delicious. Obviously needed to try one of the Wagyu steaks as well, which was cooked to perfection and softer than any steak I've ever had. We opted for the Australian Wagyu over the Japanese and were not disappointed. The tiramisu was also outstanding, but was the most "traditional" of anything we ate.

Yelp
Beautiful space, lively vibe, and Iron Chef Morimoto personally greeted each table -- a nice touch. Unfortunately, the service and food missed the mark. We waited 20 minutes before our waitress appeared (only after asking the busboy), while the table next to us received a warm welcome and menu walkthrough from the maître d'.....we did NOT get this attention. My son's salmon sashimi had multiple bones. The waitress said the kitchen told her "this is normal," which is not acceptable for sashimi at this level. The second piece also had bones. After requesting to speak to the manager, she took the plate, comped the entrée, and offered dessert, but the experience was already ruined. For the price and the name behind it, service consistency and preparation quality need major improvement.

Yelp
The food is spectacular! So fresh and delicious, and so artistically arranged! We had a glorious anniversary dinner! The service is prompt and helpful. We will definitely be back again.

Yelp
This is the latest hype restaurant in Monclair. The Morimoto brand is not doing so well in NYC anymore, so they decided to expand into the nearby suburbs. First impression, they did a good job in creating the "cool" vibe with dark decor, over-sized bar and loud music. It all goes downhill from there. The hostess is confused and unorganized. The staffs are overwhelmed. The worst parts are the sticky flooring, messy and unclean bathroom. They charge $20 for valet parking, and $175 for a 6oz Waygu steak. You can get better steak and better sushi elsewhere; but MM has the niche that they serve both (just beware that the quality is average at best especially at the prices they charge). They need to do better if they want to survive once the hype is over.

Yelp
Chef Morimoto has opened a gem of a restaurant in a prime location. I am not sure who is leaving this fine establishment such subpar reviews, but I don't think they know how to properly dine at a Japanese restaurant....every single sushi appetizer and dish we got was beyond fresh and was some of the best our party has had in their lives. All of their seafood is freshly imported from Japan. Even though they don't heavily advertise their oysters, they were by far the creamiest tasting oysters we've had. All of their raw dishes were phenomenal. Even the cooked dishes were perfect, including the gyoza, wagyu, and sticky pork ribs. The service was also top notch. Each individual attended to our needs and explained each dish as it arrived. Lastly, the ambiance is fun chique. Long story short, this restaurant is must visit for Japanese food lovers.

Yelp
When I first entered the restaurant, I thought it had a cool vibe, nice ambience. The host and waitresses were very nice. We ordered the Sticky Ribs, Aburi Sushi Apps, Ishiyaki A5 Wagyu Bap, and Black Cod. While people raved about the sticky ribs, I thought it was salty. I would not order it again. The Aburi Sushi was AMAZING! The fish and Wagyu steak were buttery soft and just melted in your mouth. The bap was too salty for me, the waitress must have added too much of the sauce but the wagyu steak was just amazing! When I return next, I won't be ordering the bap but the sushi dishes and steak.

Yelp
Food was amazing -- from the steak side of the menu and the sushi side. Delicious cocktails. Top-notch service. Beautiful space. Valet parking. If you can go, do it. It's worth it.

Yelp
Atmosphere over food here. The menu is definitely catered to "fusion crowds" (take that however you want to) which is not surprising given that the restaurant is in Montclair, NJ. If you frequent NYC Japanese / sushi restaurants, you will be fairly disappointed in the food quality. But, if you are looking for Nobu vibes, this may be a good little date spot. Food was overly salty. Sushi quality was disappointing. Cocktails and atmosphere were pretty good. There were a few kinks that need ironing out in regards to service. Super friendly wait staff, but not very attentive. But, I'll chalk that up to it being a new restaurant. Overall, the price tag is not justifiable and if we were to return, it would be only for the bar/drinks.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to celebrating my anniversary here--and I was not disappointed! First, a big thank you to our server Marla for helping make the night truly special. Her recommendations were spot on, and the drinks (especially the Paloma) were excellent. We started with the tuna pizza and Wagyu carpaccio--both dishes were beautifully presented and tasted even better. For sushi, we ordered the spicy yellowfin roll and shrimp tempura roll. Absolutely delicious--some of the best sushi I've ever had. Our final dish was the black cod, which was light, flaky, and amazing. Even the broccoli side dish was next-level--this place somehow made broccoli exciting! Every dish was a 10/10. Morimoto is a must. From the execution to the food presentation to the service, everything about MM Morimoto was excellent.

Yelp
Food is decent though nothing to rave about, but overall experience is just OK given heavy price points. Most menu items are replicas of dishes you can get in any reasonable good Asian restaurant. Is the sushi the very best quality? No. Is it good enough? Yes. Would you pay double them? Not if there are other options for real sushi fans. Is the 32oz porterhouse worth the $145 tag? Not really, when one can get much better value and quality at reputable steakhouses. The knockoff bibimbap was interesting as a carb base but just middling as a standalone entree, and that's before it being absurdly overpriced. Desserts were a tad disappointing. Cocktails and sake are NYC premium-priced but fortunately beer on tap is more modest. Food portions are not on the generous side, so diners are likely to have to order extra dishes than would seem, especially to share. Service was friendly and enthusiastic which is a plus, and there's a convenient small parking lot across the quiet street which is helpful. Overall one is definitely paying a big premium for the brand rather than for anything compelling about the food or drinks. There's a slick-ish vibe as a new spot that's novel and may be interesting to some, but could get tired with time. Happy to have tried but not a repeat visit type place. MM seems positioned more for a novel, showy experience or for local corporate group expense account dining.

Yelp
I went in high expectations and came out feeling a little underwhelmed. The cocktails were the highlight of our night. Despite the hype and pricier menu, the food was just ok. The entrees also came out almost 15 minutes apart (my wife had finished her meal before my sushi came out), and the sushi was just ok.

Yelp
While some of the food was insanely good, the gulf between brand expectation and experience was significant. Highlights: - Very friendly service. - Appetizers: Tacos 2 ways and corn tempura were astounding in flavor and presentation. - Mains: Great flavor combo on the prime rib and mushroom sauce. Lowlights: - Ambience: It seems the place was more focused on being a "scene" or nightclub than a restaurant. Background music could've been lower so that table conversation didn't require screaming. - Though friendly, the service was very slow. I don't know if this was an issue with the service itself or the kitchen, but something was definitely off. - Related to the last point, the mains took a very long time to show up. So long that my prime rib, though cooked, was actually colder than room temperature (and the stone plate it was on was not hot at all). The server offered to bring it back to the kitchen - they cooked it a bit and then it came back on the same stone plate as room temperature which puzzled me since I would've expected some sizzle or smoke. The manager was extremely nice and confirmed that she shouldn't have been able to touch the stone plate - she then offered a replacement and free dessert. The replacement prime rib was much better in terms of temp. At the end of the day, the brand and price point should have offered an experience to match, but in my opinion it fell short.

Yelp
The food , except for the sushi, ranged from average to poor. The steak was cooked well but the sides were not good. The. Cheezy potato's were the worst thing. They not hot , and tasted like day old baked potato Even the dessert, apple pie was not tasty. It was not artistic At all. My wife could show them something. Very. Disappointing.

Yelp
Great food, great service, great vibes! The crispy ribs were out of this world, as was the Wagya beef and shrimp tempura roll.

Yelp
What a disaster! So excited to eat at this esteemed chef's restaurant and what a disappointment. Too many issues to list but here's the highlights: - ordered drinks at the bar and were told they were out of two out of the three ordered. Waited 15 minutes for the drinks we finally got which were being concocted from liquid in open plastic deli containers (so weird). - The restaurant is beautiful but the service is horrendous. Apps came out quickly and were okay. Then waited 45 minutes for our entrees. We had ordered a tomahawk steak which was featured on the restaurant's Instagram. The manager came and told us they were "having problems" (which we could hear from the huge crashes coming from the kitchen every 15 minutes) and if we still wanted the tomahawk it would be another 30-40 minutes! So we got a different cut of steak. In the meantime, we ran out of water and steak knives were basically thrown on the table. The waitress was not trained in fine dining in any way. We had to ask for several of the side dishes we ordered before we got them. Dirty dishes were never cleared. At the end of the meal, two bus people came to the table and were having a conversation with each other across the table and over us. They took away my daughter's plate as she was still eating, never asking if we were done. The waitress said that dessert was on the house but we said we didn't want it. The food was good but not great. The sushi was cut so thick and served on ice which was just weird. The manager said that they comped out drinks and apps but we purchased our drinks at the bar so discount for the awful night was not what it should have been. The atmosphere was chaotic with staff running everywhere or alternatively complaining with each other in the corners. At one point the bartender wheeled a full garbage bin through the dining room to the back of the restaurant. I've never seen anything like it. The worst part was Morimoto was there so this was being done under his helm. Will not be back and that's $350 I'll regret spending for quite some time.

Yelp
My wife and I went to this restaurant a couple of weeks ago . The food was absolutely outstanding as well as the service. The ambiance in the restaurant is fantastic. Parking was easy as valet parking is offered.

Deborah C.

Yelp
We had a lovely evening at MM with a few minor complaints. Parking is easy in the lot across the street, or there is valet. We were greeted and seated quickly for our 8:45 PM reservation. My first complaint is the volume. The music is LOUD. I like to chat with my dinner companions while I eat. Also we couldn't hear our server and she couldn't hear us. What we could hear of our server was friendly and informative. The decor is fine. Sort of an 1980's Atlantic City vibe. Not to be picky, but if they are going to charge white linen prices, there should be white linen table clothes and not cheap formica tables with cheap wooden veneer. But no one is going to MM for the atmoshere, it's all about the food. The food was excellent. It ranged from very good high end quality for some dishes to down right remarkable for others. I had a lovely spicy cocktail, called a Green Heat, but as the bar is vey busy, drinks are a bit slow to come out.Highlights of our meal were the popcorn shrimp served with 2 different sauces, the sticky ribs, an astounding sushi appetizer that was torched table side and easily the best tiramisu I've ever had. The prices are quite high, but overall it was a memorable meal.

Sam M.

Yelp
Outstanding food! Apps and mains truly outstanding. Highly recommend the corn app (not joking). Great vibe, attentive waiters....the only thing I would suggest is that the food came a bit too quickly. I'd still go back without hesitation. Hope MM breaks the curse of that space and is successful so that it stays there for a long time!
